Chen, Shu-Heng, Mak Kaboudan, and Ye-Rong Du, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Computational Economics and Finance. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199844371.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Being published as a celebration of the 60th anniversary of John von Neumann’s “Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata,” this handbook attempts to provide a unique reflection on the nature of computational economics and finance (CEF) in light of natural computationalism. We restructure CEF by including both nature-inspired computing and natural computing. This new framework allows us to have a view of CEF much broader than just the conventional algorithmic consideration. The book begins with a historical review of computational economics (CE), tracing its history far back to the era of analog computing. In these early days, advancements were mainly made using the idea of natural computing, and the subjects pursued by CE were the computing system as a whole, not just numerical computing. The handbook then is organized by distinguishing computing from computing systems. Six chapters (Chapters 2 to 7) are devoted to the former. They together present a review on the recent progresses in CE, as illustrated by the computation of rational expectations, general equilibrium, risk, and volatility. The subsequent 16 chapters are devoted to the computing-systemic view of CE, including natural-inspired computing (Chapters 8 to 12) and network, agent-based computing and neural computing (Chapters 13 to 23). In addition to providing alternative approaches to forecasting, investment strategies and risk management, etc., they enable us to have a 'natural' or more realistic description of the economy, starting from its decision makers; hence, market-design or policy-design issues involving different levels of the economy, be microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic, can be simultaneously addressed and coherently integrated. The handbook concludes with a chapter on what we may hope from CE by providing an in-depth review on the epistemological aspects of computation.

Trezek, Beverly J., and Ye Wang. Evaluating Evidence-Based Practices in Reading Interventions for Deaf Students. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190455651.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to evaluate evidence-based practices in reading interventions for deaf students using the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) standards published in 2014. These standards first use eight quality indicators to determine the methodological rigor of group comparison or single-subject design studies. Evidence-based classifications are then applied to groups of studies evaluating designated categories of practice. A review of the literature yielded 30 reading intervention studies between 2000 and 2016, of which 10 employed designs allowing for subsequent analyses. The application of the quality indicators resulted in nine methodologically sound studies in six categories of practice. Although findings revealed that none of the included reading intervention practices was considered evidence-based, three were classified as potentially evidence-based, one as having mixed evidence, and the remaining two as having insufficient evidence. Challenges to meeting the CEC standards are discussed and recommendations for future research explored.

Gojgar, Mihai. PArticole de suflet, vol. II. Editura Universitara, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5682/9786062812591.

Full text
Abstract:
Pr. Conf. Dr. Constantin Necula

Abstract:
Compassion is a powerful feature of human experience and is a key component of individual, interpersonal, organizational and societal well-being. It is a fundamental skill that can be trained. Cultivating compassion may contribute to sustained well-being in individuals, groups, and organizations. There is now a growing scientific and clinical interest in understanding how compassion can be cultivated, and a need to examine what psychological processes are modulated by compassion training programs. The goal of this chapter is to briefly define the complex concept of compassion, describe the structure and content of the compassion cultivation training (CCT) program designed at Stanford University, and then share some of the empirical findings of research on CCT in community samples.

Pike, Kathleen M., Loren M. Gianini, Katharine L. Loeb, and Daniel Le Grange. Treatments for Eating Disorders. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med:psych/9780199342211.003.0020.

Full text
Abstract:
Substantial progress in advancing evidence-based treatments for eating disorders has been made. Many well-designed studies provide cumulative support for cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as the treatment of choice for bulimia nervosa. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and pharmacotherapy are considered appropriate alternative treatments for bulimia nervosa. While CBT, IPT and pharmacotherapy often produce significant reductions in binge eating and compensatory behaviors, these treatment options need to be improved to help more individuals achieve full and lasting recovery. In the treatment of binge eating disorder, CBT and IPT have been shown to be the most efficacious in reducing symptoms and improving psychological outcomes. Weight loss is often an additional goal of those entering treatment for binge eating disorder; however, existing treatments have generally been unsuccessful in producing significant maintainable weight loss. Initial studies suggest that CBT may be associated with improved outcome both in the acute and maintenance phases of treatment for anorexia nervosa.

Abstract:
The rise of online commerce has led to an emerging discipline at the intersection of economics and computer science, a discipline which studies the properties and dynamics of automated trading in online marketplaces. The CAT Market Design Tournament was created to promote research into the design and deployment of economic mechanisms for such online marketplaces, particularly mechanisms able to adapt automatically to dynamic competitive environments. This research competition, which ran from 2007 to 2011), was won by four different teams and had entrants from thirteen countries. This chapter describes the motivation and history of the tournament and presents research that has arisen from it. The winners were experimentally “played off” to evaluate whether the state of the art in automated mechanism design improved during the CAT competition. The results show a clear and consistent improvement, supporting the belief that the competition has encouraged research in the field.

Harrison, Amy. Cognitive Remediation Therapy for Eating Disorders. Edited by W. Stewart Agras and Athena Robinson. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190620998.013.21.

Full text
Abstract:
Eating disorders (EDs) have been described as among the most difficult psychiatric disorders to treat. Intervening early appears to be associated with better prognosis, although a subgroup of 20% of individuals may develop a more severe and enduring form of illness, which is associated with higher rates of mortality. Many patients with EDs who come into contact with clinical services may have extreme ambivalence toward change, which is often observed through high treatment dropout rates and difficulties engaging in treatment. This chapter outlines cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) for eating disorders, a treatment enhancer designed to support individuals with severe and complex forms of illness. This chapter explores how CRT has been used, examines its efficacy, reflects on its place as part of an overall treatment package for patients with EDs, and finally, explores options for future research in the field.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a summary of the landmark CREST study that compared carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS) for patients with symptomatic or asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis. The study found that the combined overall rate of stroke, myocardial infarction (MI) or death between CEA and CAS did not differ significantly in symptomatic or asymptomatic patients. However, during the perioperative period, CAS was associated with an increased risk of stroke and CEA was associated with an increased risk of MI. The chapter describes the basics of the study, including funding, year study began, year study was published, study location, who was studied, who was excluded, how many patients, study design, study intervention, follow-up, endpoints, results, and criticism and limitations. The chapter briefly reviews other relevant studies and information, gives a summary and discusses implications, and concludes with a relevant clinical case.
