Abstract:

The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology has been under research since thelate 1950s, and most of the research has been on designs utilizing yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as the electrolyte of choice. However, the SOFC technology has the major drawback of requiring high operation temperatures (up to 1000 degrees Celcius), so research of alternative materials have come into interest that would possibly require a lower working temperature without any significant loss of conductivity. One such material of interest for the electrolyte is compounds of ceriumdioxide (ceria). Ceria is well known for its ability to release oxygen by formingoxygen vacancies under oxygen-poor conditions, which increases its oxygen ionconductivity, and works at a lower temperature than the YSZ compounds whenproperly doped. Conversely, ceria is also able to absorb oxygen under oxygen-rich conditions, and those two abilities make it a very good material to use in catalytic converters for reduction of carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emission. The ability for the oxygen ions to easily relocate inbetween the different lattice sites is likely the key property of oxygen ion transportation in ceria. Also, in oxygen-rich conditions, the absorbed oxygen atom is assumed to join the structure at either the roomy octrahedral sites, or the vacant tetrahedral sites. Following that, the oxygen atom may relocate to other vacant locations, given it can overcome a possible potential barrier.

This thesis studies how those interstitial oxygen vacancies (defects) affect theenergy profile of ceria-based supercells by first principles calculations. The system is modeled within the density functional theory (DFT) with aid of (extended) local density approximation (LDA+U) using the software VASP. Furthermore, it is studied how those vacancies affect neighbouring oxygen atoms, and wether or not it is energetically benificial for the neighbouring atoms to readjust their positions closer or further away from the vacancy. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze wether or not it is theoretically possible that interstitial oxygen vacancies may cause neighbouring oxygen atoms to naturally relocate to the octahedral site in ceria, and how this affects the overall energy profile of the material.

Abstract:
Ceramics present excellent esthetic results and biocompatibility, although, they have undergone structural modifications with the intention of increasing their resistance and making them able to be used alone as a single restoration material, without the need to be coupled with metal. The CAD/CAM (computer assisted design/computer assisted manufacturing) technology was developed in 1971 by Francois Duret, and represents the application of computerized technology in the dentistry field. The CAD/CAM system basically functions in 3 steps: digitalization of the dental preparation, design and production of the restoration. The CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is a CAD/CAM system first introduced in 1980 and has evolved to what is known today as the CEREC 3 chairside, which allows for inlays, onlays, veneers and crowns to be prepared and applied in only one visit. The CEREC chairside allows the mechanized production of all ceramic restorations from homogeneous blocks of feldspathic fully sintered ceramics. Relative to the studies mentioned in this thesis, the longevity of the restorations produced by the CEREC system display results with high long term success rates.

Abstract:
The ice-rich crust of dwarf planet 1 Ceres is the source of a tenuous water exosphere, and the behavior of this putative exosphere is investigated with model calculations. Outgassing water molecules seasonally condense around the winter pole in an optically thin layer. This seasonal cap reaches an estimated mass of at least 2 x 10(3) kg, and the aphelion summer pole may even retain water throughout summer. If this reservoir is suddenly released by a solar energetic particle event, it would form a denser transient water exosphere. Our model calculations also explore species other than H2O. Light exospheric species escape rapidly from Ceres due to its low gravity, and hence their exospheres dissipate soon after their respective source has faded. For example, the theoretical turn-over time in a water exosphere is only 7 hr. A significant fraction of CO2 and SO2 molecules can get trapped and stored in perennially shadowed regions at the current spin axis orientation, but not at the higher spin axis tilt, leaving H2O as the only common volatile expected to accumulate in polar cold traps over long timescales. The D/H fractionation during migration to the cold traps is only about 10%.

This dissertation focuses on the strategies of Invernada Paiol de Telha community members in the quest of recovering the land called Fundão, or Invernada Paiol de Telha. This land was donated to 13 slaves - ancestors of many among the community -, back to the year 1860, by their owner Balbina Francisca de Siqueira. According to the various actors involved in the land claim process, once the successors of those slaves were expelled of the land in the mid-seventies, they organized themselves in four different territorial bases or cores: the municipal districts of Guarapuava and Pinhão in Paraná; a settlement of INCRA, located in Colônia Socorro, district of Entre-Rios/PR; and the camp made by them on the outskirts of the lands claimed. Due to the segmentary aspect of the group, the strategies used in trying to regain the land always assume distinct dimensions, related to the different contexts in which their members are involved. These strategies reveal, create and recreate different ways of thinking about the group, their political strategies, their collectivity, and their history.

Introduction: The evolution of technology in all areas of activity has changed the way it addresses the challenges that are imposed today. In dentistry it has happened the same way as in health care in general, a huge resistance to new techniques and technologies, but what is certain is that the digital age is increasingly expanding and to getting over this resistance. CAD / CAM systems already form an integral part of the dental rehabilitation, mainly throughout dental laboratories, but also in the dentist’s office (with CEREC system) that places the CAD / CAM technology to the dentists and patients reach. Objectives: To determine, throughout a bibliographic review the evolution of the CEREC systems in past few years. This was intended to verify the clinical effectiveness of the system itself in the various materials it works with: for fixed prosthetic restorations and rehabilitations on impantes. Methods: In preparing this thesis a bibliographic review was performed in the period of 1994 to March de 2015. Databases were used as Pubmed (Medline), Elsevier, sceilo and googleacademic with the keywords "digital prosthetic dentistry" ; "Dental cad / cam" ;"Dental ceramics" ;"CEREC" ;"CEREC system" ;"CEREC materials." Kullgren, Jolla. "Oxygen Vacancy Chemistry in Ceria." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Strukturkemi, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-167521.

Full text
Abstract:
Cerium(IV) oxide (CeO2), ceria, is an active metal oxide used in solid oxide fuel cells and for the purification of exhaust gases in vehicle emissions control. Behind these technically important applications of ceria lies one overriding feature, namely ceria's exceptional reduction-oxidation properties. These are enabled by the duality of the cerium ion which easily toggles between Ce4+ and Ce3+. Here the cerium 4f electrons and oxygen vacancies (missing oxygen ions in the structure) are key players. In this thesis, the nature of ceria's f electrons and oxygen vacancies are in focus, and examined with theoretical calculations. It is shown that for single oxygen vacancies at ceria surfaces, the intimate coupling between geometrical structure and electron localisation gives a multitude of almost degenerate local energy mimima. With many vacancies, the situation becomes even more complex, and not even state-of-the-art quantum-mechanical calculations manage to predict the experimentally observed phenomenon of vacancy clustering. Instead, an alternative set of computer experiments managed to produce stable vacancy chains and trimers consistent with experimental findings from the literature and revealed a new general principle for surface vacancy clustering. The rich surface chemistry of ceria involves not only oxygen vacancies but also other active oxygen species such as superoxide ions (O2−). Experiments have shown that nanocrystalline ceria demonstrates an unusually large oxygen storage capacity (OSC) and an appreciable low-temperature redox activity, which have been ascribed to superoxide species. A mechanism explaining these phenomena is presented. The ceria surface is also known to interact with SOx molecules, which is relevant both in the context of sulfur poisoning of ceria-based catalysts and sulfur recovery from them. In this thesis, the sulfur species and key mechanisms involved are identified.

Abstract:
Ahuna Mons is a 4 km tall mountain on Ceres interpreted as a geologically young cryovolcanic dome. Other possible cryovolcanic features are more ambiguous, implying that cryovolcanism is only a recent phenomenon or that other cryovolcanic structures have been modified beyond easy identification. We test the hypothesis that Cerean cryovolcanic domes viscously relax, precluding ancient domes from recognition. We use numerical models to predict flow velocities of Ahuna Mons to be 10-500 m/Myr, depending upon assumptions about ice content, rheology, grain size, and thermal parameters. Slower flow rates in this range are sufficiently fast to induce extensive relaxation of cryovolcanic structures over 10(8)-10(9) years, but gradual enough for Ahuna Mons to remain identifiable today. Positive topographic features, including a tholus underlying Ahuna Mons, may represent relaxed cryovolcanic structures. A composition for Ahuna Mons of >40% ice explains the observed distribution of cryovolcanic structures because viscous relaxation renders old cryovolcanoes unrecognizable.

Abstract:
In recent years, sales in the cereal category have been declining across major manufacturers' brands. Current literature depicts successful tactics involved in brand revival, however lacks information about the application of these strategies to an entire category. This study aims to analyze and apply these methods with a focus on General Mills' cereals in an attempt to make viable recommendations for the company to implement and increase overall sales. By making naturalistic observations both in a grocery store and online via YouTube and General Mills brand websites, this paper identifies how General Mills currently positions cereal. Furthermore, through the examination of social media posts and the use of interviews and surveys, this report portrays what consumers perceive about cereal in regards to the four aforementioned areas. The results provide areas of opportunity for General Mills to expand upon moving forward. Findings from this analysis indicate General Mills should focus on expanding nostalgia appeals, supplementing the snacking occasion notion, emphasizing cereal as an ingredient for others foods, and further researching the viability of reusable packaging for particular items.

The Industrial Revolution had a huge impact on nineteenth century cities had plans to expand the "old city". Due to its historical controversy a plans developed during that time was the Eixample plan in Barcelona. The Eixample plan is the result of a controversial competition won in as a Civil Engineer and influenced by the Socialist thinkers of the time like Etienne, Cabet carried out meticulous studies of the living conditions inside t the old city. In the 1850's, Barcelona was going through an era of rapid industrial the arrival of the Industrial Revolution, the introduction of factories, and the conditions inside the wall worsened. As a result, epidemics like cholera beset the most advanced city in Spain was also, at some level, the most inhuman. Cedá's plan was different from others in the sense that it was a ... on an egalitarian grid, an economic proposal, and a comprehensive circulation important aspect of the plan was that Cedá's design intention was not only a functionality was a response to the industrial society's conditions. Due to hi! and his radical, utopian, and egalitarian proposal, his plan was not well received the central government. It eventually took decades for Catalans to digest and applaud Cedá's work. The main purpose of this thesis is to reveal Cedá's vision, that of an technical mind. Although much research has been done about the Eixample the meticulous, almost obsessive studies Cedá did of conditions inside thew the physical plan. This thesis, first of all, describes the city's conditions and how Cedá was receptive to them. Secondly, it shows how he combined a vision with the capacity to think about cities as shifting social entities, receptive to infinite agents. finally, it describes Cedá's design approach and the result of that process: the Eixample plan and how it exists in todays world, making it a remarkable urban design example.

Abstract:
The aims of the project were to define the signals provided by the cereal host which induce cereal rusts to form appressoria over stomata, and to analyse the mechanism by which these signals are transduced. Using polystyrene replicas of microfabricated silicon wafers to provide precisely defined topographies, appressoria were induced in all the cereal rusts analysed (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici, P. graminis f. sp. avenae, P. graminis f. sp. secalis, P. recondita f. sp. tritici, P. coronata f. sp. avenae and P. hordei) by topographies with closely spaced (1.5 μm) ridges. Ridges of different heights (between 0.116 μm and 2.4 μm) were tested. The patterns of response to different ridge heights was not correlated to host nor rust species. Only one rust, P. graminis f. sp. secalis, formed significant numbers of appressoria (up to 62%) on ridges spaced 50 μm apart (= single ridges). The formation of appressoria on host leaves was found to be very efficient, 92-95% of germlings encountering a stoma formed an appressorium over the stoma. On polystyrene host leaf replicas, however, the efficiency was much less, and varied significantly between rusts (4%-63%). Again, the variation was not correlated to host or rust species. The implication was that while topographical signals alone are sufficient to induce appressoria in vitro, topography of the host alone was not sufficient to explain the high efficiency of appressorium induction seen in vivo. It was shown for P. graminis f.sp. tritici that the volatile compounds trans-2-hexen-1-ol and cis-3-hexen-1-ol, produced by the host plant as part of the lipoxygenase pathway, induced appressoria in the absence of topographical stimuli. Induction was dose dependent and optimal at 1 mM when applied to the fungus as a solution. Appressoria were also induced when the germlings were exposed to vapour from solutions of trans-2-hexen-1-ol. Induction was over a very narrow range of concentrations (1-2 mM).

Abstract:
TiO2 is the most active and most suitable semiconductor photocatalyst. It is non-toxic, available, chemical and thermically stable but it has some disadvantages such as wide band gap (UV required) and fast recombination of charge carriers. CeO2 is one of the most reported rare earth metal oxides used in catalysis, based on its enhanced structural and redox properties. It is an effective coupling material with TiO2 in the field of visible light driven photocatalysis. The band gap of TiO2 is 3.2 eV, so it absorbs light in the UV region. The ceria addition induces a decrease in the energy gap and enhances the adsorption in the visible region, enabling the use of the catalyst under solar light. The aim of this thesis is to optimize the synthetic procedure in order to obtain nano octahedra of pure TiO2 and Ce-doped TiO2 and to study the effect of Ce loading on the morphology of titania nanoparticles and their photocatalytic activity. The TiO2 samples containing different CeO2 loadings (ranging from 0 to 1.5 wt.%) were prepare by an ultrasonication-hydrothermal reaction of potassium titanate nanowires precursor. Also the Potassium titanate nanowires (TNWs) were prepared by hydrothermal reaction. All the materials were characterize by different techniques: XPS,XRD,HRTEM,DRIFT UV-VIS. The photocatalytic tests were carried out in aqueous solution at r.t. and P atm, under UV, visible and under simulated solar light irradiation with different target pollutant molecules.

Abstract:
Amaranth is a pseudocereal of great nutritional value that exhibits amounts of fiber and protein higher than the usually consumed cereals. The agronomic characteristics and the possibility of utilization of the entire plant drew sufficient interest among plant breeders to produce this grain in Brazil. Objective: To develop amaranth-based breakfast cereals and cereal bars aimed at the maximal acceptance and minimal loss of nutrients. Methodology: The breakfast cereal was produced in a single screw extruder with semi-industrial capacity and the cereal bars in accordance with appropriate dietary technique. Results: After two central composite designs, it became evident that the independent variable of importance for the study was the temperature. It was observed that the moisture of the sample did not exert any significant effect in the final product within the range studied. Best results were obtained with 15% moisture and 140º C at the third zone. A breakfast cereal developed with the whole grain exhibited the same characteristics of expansion and texture of a product manufactured with the defatted flour. The sensory panel preferred the sample prepared with defatted flour, which obtained 72% of the grades above the pre-established cutting point 7. Two types of cereal bars, both containing 70% of amaranth, one with popped amaranth and another with a mixture of popped and extruded amaranth. The amount of protein and fiber was higher in these products when compared with similar formulations without amaranth. Cereal bars containing only the popped amaranth were preferred by 66% of the panel of whom 77% assigned grades equal to or higher than the cutting point. Conclusion: The nutritional value of the developed products is superior to the similars confectioned with other cereals and they had high acceptability.

Abstract:
Using complexing-agent assisted sol-gel routes, mixed Pd/ceria-alumina and Pd/terbia-ceria-alumina catalysts were prepared. The materials have been characterised by means of ICP-MS, TEM, EDX, XPS, XRD, BET, TPR, TPO and TPD. Catalytic testing was carried out in a temperature programmed mode as well as isothermally, using synthetic exhaust gas mixtures with different air-to-fuel ratios. The obtained results were compared with those of traditionally impregnated Pd/ceria-alumina and PtRh/ceria-alumina. Evaluating the catalysts potential as three-way converters, it has been shown that as a result of the sol-gel preparation chosen, highly homogeneous materials were produced. These had (i) much higher oxygen storage potential (especially at low temperatures, T ≈ 400 - 500K), (ii) improved metal support interactions and (iii) lower CO and propane light-off temperatures (T50%(CO) ≈ 423K, T50%(C3H8) ≈ 593K for R ≥ 1). Under fuel-rich conditions an improved low temperature NO activity was shown for the ceria-containing materials. This was attributed to a ceria-mediated redox mechanism and an improved Pd-ceria interaction for these sol-gel-derived samples. The addition of terbia was found to promote the catalysts propane activity, especially under fuel-rich conditions. The application of the different catalysts as three-way converters has been discussed, with special emphasis on their potential during the cold-start period. In a further set of catalytic experiments, using less complex gas mixtures, a more comprehensive view of the detailed Pd chemistry involved in these new three-way catalysts was obtained.

Abstract:
The thesis analyses the debate on the architecture of the European Modern Movement that took place in the United States during the period between the two world wars. With regard to this debate, which not only involved those operating in the architectural sector, but that ended up involving vast sectors of American society and the organization of architectural schools, the extreme characteristic features that lead back to a dialectic of modernity are emphasized gathering around the polarities represented by regionalism and universalism. The aim was to analyse the social, cultural, and artistic context where an idea of architecture was being defined that, at the same time, was "modern" and "American", during the period between the Great Depression, which reached its peak in 1932, and the beginning of the Cold War, with the post-war reconstruction and the Marshall Plan of 1948. The starting and ending dates of the period under study were precisely established in correspondence of two events organized by the MoMA in New York, since these two events were believed to mark two moments of crucial reflection in modern architecture. In the sixteen years between the two events organized by the MoMA, American architecture demonstrated a progressive emancipation, as much from the cultural domination imposed by few isolated "pioneers", almost all European, as from the mythology of an American technological "exceptionalism" symbolized, in architecture, by the skyscraper and, therefore, the outlets of a process that was taking root and spreading were questioned: architecture no longer appeared indifferent to place and time but, on the contrary, it needed to be attentive to a topographical, climatic and cultural context. lt was no longer the legacy of a functional and rigidly sachlich culture of the early twenties, but it was the product of a personal and creative approach towards design. After all, during the period that separates the two dates, social, political and economic events occurred that would have extraordinary repercussions on architecture, as well.

The low-temperature and cost-effective oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide remains a fundamental challenge in heterogeneous catalysis that would enable a diverse range of technologies for electrochemical storage and respiratory health. The development of new catalysts is often driven by high-throughput screening and many of the resulting compounds are mixed-phase, which obscures a rigorous identification of active sites and mechanisms at play for catalysis. In this thesis, the preparation of substituted ceria nanoparticles is described to bring about a fundamental understanding of the structure of the active sites, mechanism and design descriptors for CO oxidation on ceria-based catalysts. Monodisperse, single-phase nanoparticles of late first-row transition-metal-substituted ceria (MyCe₁.yO₂-x, M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) are prepared from the controlled pyrolysis of heterobimetallic precursors in amine surfactant solutions. By means of kinetic analyses, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the active site for CO oxidation catalysis is identified as atomically-dispersed, square-planar M³+ and M²+ moieties substituted into the surface of the ceria lattice. The introduction of CuO does not contribute to the catalytic activity of CuyCe₁.yO₂-x, lending support to the hypothesis that the substituted ceria itself is responsible for the catalytic rate enhancement in mixed-phased catalysts like CuO/CeO₂ Under oxygen-rich conditions, the kinetic parameters for CO oxidation are consistent with lattice oxygen from the dispersed copper sites contributing directly to the oxidation of CO in the rate-determining step. In-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FTIR studies indicate that adsorbed CO can be directly oxidized to CO₂ in the absence of gaseous O₂, while in-situ XAS confirms that electron transfer is localized to the copper sites. XAS studies demonstrate that the reversible reducibility of dispersed copper ions is a contributing factor for the special catalytic activity of CuO/CeO₂ catalysts. The oxygen-ion vacancy formation energy is introduced as an activity descriptor to rationalize trends in the catalytic activities measured for MyCe₁-yO₂-x nanoparticles that span over three orders of magnitude. As such, the DFT-calculated vacancy formation energy serves to guide in the rational design of catalysts through computational, rather than experimental, screening of candidate compounds for CO oxidation catalysis.

Gadolinium-doped ceria based powders were co-fired with additions of silica, and silica and lanthanum oxide, to test the silicascavenging role of lanthanum. The formation of one ionic conducting secondary phase, instead of an insulating phase, was attempted. The structural, microstructural and electrical characterization of these samples confirmed the formation of one apatite-type lanthanum silicate-based phase and a significant enhancement of the grain boundary conductivity of these materials.

Abstract:
A series of laboratory and field investigations were performed to investigate the effect of cereal straw incorporation on microbially mediated processes in a range of soils from North Eastern Scotland. The incorporation of cereal straw residues, at two field sites, caused the microbial biomass to increase in magnitude. Similar results were found in laboratory studies. Repeated incorporation of cereal straw caused an increase in the fungal component of the microbial biomass. This resulted in an altered pattern of decompositon for subsequently added carbonaceous substrates. The productuion and accumualtion of acetic acid in aerobic soil systems was monitored in laboratory incubations. It was proposed that the accumulation of acetic acid was found to be controlled by redox potentials at the sites of microbiological activity. Straw was not observed to increase acetic acid production. Fertiliser nitrogen had both a stimulatory effect on acetic acid production (by stimulating decomposition, and oxygen consumption), and an inhibitory effect (added nitrate buffering a fall in redox potential). Gaseous nitrogen loss via denitrification and ammonia volatilisation was monitored at two field sites. These nitrogen losses were found to be low. Straw incorporation did not increase the magnitude of these losses and under certain circumstances, reduced it.
