Hunt, Alice, ed. The Oxford Handbook of Archaeological Ceramic Analysis. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199681532.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Archaeological Ceramic Analysis draws together topics and methodologies essential for the socio-cultural, mineralogical, and geochemical analysis of archaeological ceramic. Ceramic is one of the most complex and ubiquitous archaeomaterials in the archaeological record: it occurs around the world and through time in almost every culture and context, from building materials and technological installations to utilitarian wares and votive figurines. For more than 100 years, archaeologists have used ceramic analysis to answer complex questions about economy, subsistence, technological innovation, social organization, and dating. The volume is structured around the themes “Research design and data analysis,” “Foundational concepts,” “Evaluating ceramic provenance,” “Investigating ceramic manufacture,” “Assessing vessel function,” and “Dating ceramic assemblages.” It provides a common vocabulary and offers practical tools and guidelines for ceramic analysis using techniques and methodologies ranging from network analysis and typology to rehydroxylation dating and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Each chapter provides the theoretical background and practical guidelines, such as cost and destructiveness of analysis, for each technique, as well as detailed case studies illustrating the application and interpretation of analytical data for answering anthropological questions.

Barreto, Cristiana. Figurine Traditions from the Amazon. Edited by Timothy Insoll. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199675616.013.020.

Full text
Abstract:
Stone and ceramic figurines occurred in many pre-Columbian cultures of Amazonia but only appear as recurrent, traditional objects late in the cultural history of the region, primarily in the large settlements which flourished along the Lower Amazon and its estuaries. Marajoara and Santarém ceramics include an array of figurines depicting humans and animals, in languages emphasizing body transformation and reproduction, and, sometimes, decapitation. Some also performed as rattles, or maracas, an instrument traditionally related to shamanic power. Stone figurines from the Lower Amazon present similar modes of body representation and seem to be part of the drug paraphernalia used in shamanic rituals. Rather than being a marker for the appearance of more complex, agrarian societies, Amazonian figurines seem to be related to the intensification of deeply rooted shamanic practices. This chapter reviews the context and repertoires of figurine traditions within the different models proposed in Amazonian archaeology for pre-Columbian societies.

Ast, Rodney, Tino Licht, and Julia Lougovaya, eds. Uniformity and Regionalism in Latin Writing Culture of the First Millennium C.E. Harrassowitz Verlag, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.13173/9783447118880.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the course of thirteen chapters authored by specialists of Roman history, Classics, Latin linguistics, papyrology, epigraphy and Medieval studies, this volume showcases samples of Latin writing in Greco-Roman antiquity and the early Middle Ages from a range of places across and on the margins of the Mediterranean world (Britain, Italy, North Africa, Visigothic Spain, among others). Central to the book is the basic question how uniform practices and regional expression manifest themselves in materials, scripts, layout and even language. In addition to parchment manuscripts and stone inscriptions, the contributions deal with Latin writing on papyrus, wood, ceramic sherds (called “ostraca”), metal and slate. They consider how regional factors might have affected preferences for some materials; how universal documentary practice adjusted to local habits; how the acquisition of Latin as a foreign language could be aided by and reflected in the layout and design of a text; how the origin of documents might be observed in script; and how space could enshrine and enhance text.

Pool, Christopher A. Mesoamerica—Olmec Figurines. Edited by Timothy Insoll. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199675616.013.012.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of Olmec figurines has proven contentious with respect to defining Olmec style, the relation of Olmec style to the Olmec archaeological culture of Mexico’s southern Gulf lowlands, and the representation of social categories, particularly gender categories. Focusing on the Early and Middle Formative ceramic figurine traditions of Olman, the ‘Olmec heartland’ of the southern Gulf lowlands, this chapter reviews previous classifications, examines variation and change in technical and aesthetic styles from a community-of-practice perspective, and discusses the figural representation of gender, age, and other social categories. Variation in the contexts and social uses of Olmec-style figurines outside of the southern Gulf lowlands underscores their reinterpretation within different webs of social identities. Viewing variation in figurine assemblages as the consequence of differential participation of makers and users in overlapping communities of practice offers advantages for conceptualizing the formal variation within Formative figurine styles.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the importance of ceramics in material cultural studies. It proceeds to say that ceramics are considered a key feature of human material culture because of what they are taken to represent in economic, technological, and evolutionary terms. The innovation of taking the plastic medium of clay and marrying it with pyrotechnology to create irreversibly a resilient object — usually in the form of a container, has frequently been assumed to mark a revolutionary stage in the development of modern human thought and practice, forming with agriculture and sedentism a trinity of epoch-changing innovations. This article talks about the idea of the body as being used as a container. It says that ‘Containment’ may well be the ‘function’ offering archaeology one of the most important sources of archaeological data and windows into society, and culture; but very little is known about the cognitive, experiential, and evolutionary grounding of the concepts embodied in each and every container.

Abstract:
The international border between the United States and Mexico has no meaning for the Aboriginal history of the Southwest/Northwest. It has, however, greatly limited the amount of archaeology done in northern Mexico. Since the 1980s, Mexican and U.S. archaeologists have done increasing amounts of research in the Mexican state of Sonora. Here they have developed an international collaborative practice of archaeology unique in North America. Sonora has a rich archaeological record that includes Paleoindian and Archaic sites. This chapter focuses on the agricultural peoples of Sonora, beginning with the Early Agricultural site of La Playa. Archaeologists have defined six ceramic period archaeological traditions in the state (Central Coast, Trincheras, Casas Grandes, Río Sonora, Huatabampo, and Serrana). Contrary to earlier interpretations of these traditions as extensions of events, processes, and cultures found to the south or the north, contemporary archaeology is demonstrating them to be the results of complex local developments.
