Abstract:
Abstract I use the introduction of deposit insurance in eight U.S. states in the early twentieth-century to study the effects of deposit insurance on the banking system. Using a triple difference approach exploiting regulatory differences between national and state banks and between states, I find that insured banks experienced higher deposit growth and decreased funding costs. I also observe a replacement of demand deposits by riskier time deposits. However, I find no aggregate effects on failure rates or risk-taking. Using hand-collected micro-level data, I show that small and large banks reacted differently and that banks facing funding problems especially benefited. Abstract:
A brief history of the discovery and study of the large Pokrovsky gold ore deposit of the Amur Region, from the ores of which about 63 tons of gold were extracted, is given. The role of scientific and production organizations and individual geologists in the discovery of the deposit is shown. According to the results of almost half a century of research, the deposit is classified as a near-surface gold-silver formation with a typical composition of ores, near-ore metasomatites and native gold for deposits of this type. The closest analogue of Pokrovka is the Kubak deposit of the Omolonsky gold-silver province.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTOrganic material and a few tree trunks have been recovered from the shrinking ice deposits of Velebit Mountain, Croatia. Ten radiocarbon (14C) dates, seven new measurements and three recalibrated ones, from three cave ice deposits were evaluated. The new data argue for the preservation of a ~1000-yr-old deposit in the Kugina Ice Cave and a <500-yr-old accumulation in the Ledena Pit. A 14C age suggests that the ice in the lower section of Vukušić cave ice deposit is very likely older than 3500 yr. The work is in progress to verify this suggestion. Evaluation of the temporal distribution of the calibrated ages of the 14C-dated vegetal remains allowed constraining the accumulation and ablation history of cave ice in the northern and central Velebit. Periods lacking vegetal remains in these cave ice deposits (before the 11th century and in the 15th century) tend to match with similar patterns from other cave ice deposits from the Eastern Alps and the Swiss Jura Mountains, suggesting large-scale coherence regulating European cave ice mass balance changes over the past ~1200 yr.

The excavation of M. S. F. Hood in the area of the Minoan Royal Road at Knossos produced stratified deposits of Greek pottery ranging in date from Protogeometric to Hellenistic. This article, the last in a series of three, concentrates on the local and imported pottery of the Classical and Hellenistic periods. For the Classical sequence, a late-fourth century house deposit is supplemented by three earlier well fills from the area of the Vcnizeleion Hospital. There follows five stratified groups of Hellenistic pottery, the last two being from second-century floor deposits. Also included here are many pieces from less well stratified contexts, but of intrinsic interest.

Abstract:
The evolution of legal deposit shows changes and challenges in collecting, access to and use of documentary heritage. Legal deposit emerged in New Zealand at the beginning of the 20th century with the aim of preserving print publications mainly for the use of a privileged part of society. In the 21st century legal deposit has evolved to include the safeguarding of electronic resources and providing access to the documentary heritage for all New Zealanders. The National Library of New Zealand has acquired new functions for a proper stewardship of digital heritage. E-deposit and web harvesting are two new mechanisms for collecting New Zealand publications. The article proposes that legal deposit through human rights and multiculturalism should involve different communities of heritage in web curation.

Abstract:
This paper examines if an erosive hiatus found in the peat stratigraphy and marsh-accumulation record from northwest Hammock River Marsh (HRM), Connecticut (CT) can be attributed to a 14th or a 15th century hurricane, each documented by a radiocarbon-dated overwash fan in Succotash Marsh (SM) (Rhode Island) about 90 km to the east. Given that (i) the best estimate age range for the 15th century overwash deposit in SM (1400–1440 cal AD, 2 σ) overlaps entirely with that for first plant growth after erosion at HRM (1390–1450 cal AD, 2 σ), while the best estimate age range for the 14th century overwash deposit (1290–1410 cal AD, 2 σ) overlaps just 10 yr, and (ii) interpretation of the available stratigraphic and sedimentary evidence from HRM suggests that a high-energy event offers the simplest explanation for the observed marsh erosion, we conclude that a plausible link exists between the 15th century hurricane and the marsh erosion in HRM. The best estimate age range for the 14th century hurricane appears to overlap for 91% with the age range for the first plant growth (1290–1400 cal AD, 2 σ) following marsh erosion in East River Marsh (CT), located about 12 km west of HRM. These results imply that erosive boundaries in salt-marsh peat deposits have potential as markers of past hurricane activity.

Abstract:
The article discusses specific features of service in the archive of the deposits department of the St. Petersburg office of the State Bank in the early 20th century. The author reviews labor conditions and wages of archive employees. The documents storage in the deposit department was one of the largest of all such institutions in the extensive network of branches of the St. Petersburg office of the State Bank. Specific operational activities of the deposits department necessitated storing considerable volume of documents in their archive. Servicing a large clientele, who could deposit or withdraw capital at any date, required from archivists much effort no just to safeguard bank documents, but also to issue numerous account statements for various private and state institutions, as well as residents of the capital and its environs, whenever the deposit department employees demanded them. For timely provision of the necessary information on accounts to the bank officials, the archive employees listed information on each client, creating a unique database. Most painstaking was their work on compilation of the so-called “movable alphabet,” index of 1.5 million cards for all clients of the St. Petersburg office (by the end of 1917). Systematization of documents and maintaining of the archive also demanded much effort. Quite often the archive employees lacked time, and thus a significant amount of random unfilled documents accumulated over time. The article discusses ways to overcome these difficult situations, for instance, by outsourcing. The article provides some information on the archive officials, their wages, bank vacation/leave policies. It is noteworthy that in the days of World War I the archive began employing women, most often wives of bookbinders called for military service. The experiment was extremely successful. The State Bank highly appreciated their professional qualities and willingly hired women, when there was a vacancy.

Abstract:
Exploration companies commonly rely on geochemistry to identify alteration of distinctive geochemical and mineralogical character, surrounding metal sulphide deposits that were precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. However, examination of raw analytical data is prone to error due to closure effects and the difficulty in removing the effects of background variation in unaltered rocks from the variations imposed by later hydrothermal alteration. Closure can be avoided by using ratios, or by utilising mass balance approaches based on fixing volume, mass or concentration changes between samples of parent and daughter lithologies. Using a parent-daughter approach is limiting, because only pairs of samples can be compared at any one time and because an unaltered equivalent must be produced for each sample examined in this way. Pearce Element Ratio analysis and General Element Ratio analysis (PER and GER) are not restricted in this fashion, and are more amenable to interrogation of large data sets. PER and GER are also capable of decoupling background variation from that variation due to hydrothermal alteration. Furthermore, these ratio methods are readily applied to commercially derived lithogeochemical assays. In this study, various analytical methods and interpretive techniques (including PER and GER) have been applied to identify alteration in rocks around the Century and Elura Zn-Pb-Ag deposits, and to assess whether primary ore-related alteration effects can still be identified once altered rocks have been subjected to weathering. Ratios of trace elements over a conserved element have been used to generate a suite of pathfinder elements for each deposit. Elements enriched in host rocks around both deposits include the economic metals Zn, Pb and Ag, along with Rb and Tl. Sodium is ubiquitously depleted in altered rocks. Other elements in the pathfinder suites are distinctive to each deposit type, and include a number of major and trace elements that are added or removed from the rocks around the mineralised zones. For example, Sb and As are enriched in rocks around Elura mineralisation while Ge and Cd are enriched in samples around Century deposit. Iron carbonate development accompanied by potassic alteration, the destruction of albite and the absence of chlorite are the dominant mineral alteration effects at both deposits. PER and GER diagrams have been used to quantify the intensity of this alteration and allow lithogeochemistry to be used to vector towards high intensity alteration, which is adjacent to Century and Elura mineralisation. These ratio methods are applied to both visibly and cryptically altered rocks at both deposits, and have a very high degree of success in classifying alteration in unweathered rocks. The following simple PER ratios indicate proximity to Elura mineralisation: Ca/C, K/Al for shales, K/(Al-Na) for siltstones/sandstones. The following simple PER ratios indicate proximity to Century mineralisation: Mn/Ti, Mg/Ti and Fe/Ti vs C/Ti, K/Ti vs Al/Ti, K/Ti vs (Al-Na)/Ti. Pathfinder elements can be overlain onto PER and GER diagrams to aid in ranking the prospectivity of samples, and to assess mineral hosts for individual pathfinder elements. Weathering destroys most indicators of alteration in the Elura area, while alteration signatures are better preserved in host rocks around the Century deposit.

Mbao, Chabala. "An analysis of flood activity over the past century based on the sedimentary deposits in the Mfolozi floodplain." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/53711.

Full text
Abstract:
Floods are natural phenomena that are of widespread interest to the scientific community, particularly in the context of understanding the impact of climate change as well as changing land use patterns and the security of infrastructure such as towns and roads. In northern KwaZulu-Natal, large flood events have been a reoccurring feature over the past century. The geographical position and extent of the region means that is affected by both inland and coastal weather phenomena, each with the potential to cause large flood events. While information pertaining to large floods in the region in the form of flow data is readily available, flow data is often incomplete and limited in terms of how far back in time the records extend. The Mfolozi River floodplain itself also houses a record of flood activity in the region in the form of sedimentary deposits, which have the potential to reveal flood activity over a much longer timescale, even when monitoring of flood activity in the region was not present. Establishing a link between the hydrological and sedimentary features of floods may be useful in establishing a record of flood activity extending beyond the limits of historical records. The aim of this project was to construct a record of major flood events on the Mfolozi River floodplain over the last century and determine their source. The first objective involved establishing the history of flood events in the Mfolozi River catchment utilising hydrological data recorded throughout the catchment. Thirty nine different large floods (defined as being over 800 m3.s-1) were recorded on the floodplain over the past century. The data also highlighted differences in the extent of known coastal and inland systems (tropical cyclones and cut-off lows respectively), allowing for inferences to be made about the area of the catchment most likely affected by each event; some flood events were identified as having mostly affected the upper reaches of the catchment, while others mostly affected the lower reaches, closer to the coast. The second objective was to identify the various physical, mineralogical and geochemical features of the sediment deposited on the Mfolozi floodplain. Multiple individual flood deposits were identified in the sedimentary record, with sediment tracing analysis providing insight into the source of the deposits within the catchment; no traces of igneous or metamorphic material could be found within the sediment. The source rocks were identified as mostly quartzite, with minor shale and sandstone deposits as well. This put the source of the sediment in the upper to middle reaches of the catchment. The sedimentary analysis was combined with the hydrological records to establish a chronology of flood events extending back to the 1960's. Unfortunately, this record could not be extended further due to the limited amount of sediment collected as well the limits of readily available analytical techniques; radionuclide dating methods were unsuccessful due to the low amounts of fallout radionuclides present in the sediment. The study has however successfully established a history of flood events in the region, as well as providing a link between the hydrological and sedimentary features of flood events that could potentially be useful for current and future research.

Abstract:
In Morocco, many Pb-Zn-Ag vein-type deposits are hosted in paleozoic series crosscut by variscan granitoids. The spatial association of these veins with the magmatic intrusions has often been interpreted as evidence of a genetic link between the granitoids emplacement and the mineralizing hydrothermal event. However, recent data allow to consider a late-variscan emplacement of these mineralizations. Genetical models must thus be reviewed, as well as the exploration of these base metals strategy. The polymetallic district of Tighza-Jbel Aouam (Central Morocco), were Pb-Zn-Ag vein-type deposits are located around small granitic stocks, has been selected to study the spatial and temporal relationships between granitoids and associated mineralizations. The aims of this work have been: (i) to go further into the mineralizations mineralogy, (ii) to use appropriate geochronological methods to date the mineralizations, (iii) to study the magma-fluids-metals transfers from the deeper areas (mantle, deep crust) to the upper lithosphere, using geochemical tracers. Granitic stocks and dykes of Tighza have been analyzed and dated using U/Pb method on zircons. These rocks belong to a high-K calc-alkaline association and datations show three magmatic and associated hydrothermal events: 320 to 300 Ma, stocks with few dykes emplacement; 300 to 280 Ma, pluton emplacement with associated hydrothermal event and responsible for a hydrothermal metamorphic halo, mineralizing the W-Au ore; (iii) 280 to 240 Ma, NE-SW dykes network emplacement, associated with a Pb-Zn-Ag mineralizing hydrothermal event, characterized by a chlorite-muscovite-calcite alteration of the hosting metasediments. The detailed study of Pb-Zn-Ag veins paragenesis showed the pulsated character of the mineralization precipitations. Four successive paragenesis have been identified: (P1) siderite ± quartz; (P2) calcite ± ankerite + sphalerite + galena ± siderite ± quartz ± chalcedony; (P3) siderite + sphalerite + galena ± quartz ; (P4) quartz + calcite + pyrite. These synchrone paragenese are associated with REE-minerals (monazite, xenotime, synchisite) responsible for the high amount of REE in the gangue carbonates (≃ 700 ppm). Some monazites from a Pb-Zn-Ag vein have been dated at 255 ± 15 Ma using the Th/Pb method. The metals source study (lead isotopes) shows that the Pb of Pb-Zn-Ag mineralizations come from the upper crust leaching. The fluid sources study of Pb-Zn-Ag veins indicates a crustal origin (He, Ar isotopes) strongly buffered by the hosting shales (C, O isotopes). W-Au mineralizing fluids are stemming from a mixing of meteoric and mantellic fluids (He, Ar isotopes). W-Au and Pb-Zn-Ag are thus distinguished mineralizations. The polymetallic district of Tighza-Jbel Aouam is thus characterized by the superposition of several magmatic and hydrothermal events controlled by lithospheric scale leap, leading to the formation of: (i) mesothermal W-Au deposit which can be considered as a porphyry-type mineralization; (ii) epithermal Pb-Zn-Ag mineralization. These magmatic and metallogenic events last over 80 Ma after the end of the varican orogenesis, and characterize the post-collisional context of this orogen, in particular the effects of the thermal balance of the crust during the permo-triassic period and the Atlantic pre-rifting

Abstract:

Para a análise propria¬mente dita utilizamos duas técnicas, nomeadamente a análise categorial-temática (técnica I) e a análise associativa.

Abstract: The socio-technical developments related to the Internet between 2000 and 2010 are essential for an understanding of the process of formation of a new generation of music producers and consumers in Brazil. This process is especially significant when one considers the music put out by the so-called contemporary "independent Brazilian scene." Growing numbers of musicians took part in this scene and produced their work with no backing from the large recording companies and they have been very well received by segmented markets. They have won Brazilian awards in music and they have been recognized in a broad range of specialized media, where their musical output has been considered responsible for many of the innovations and significant aesthetic contributions in today's panorama of contemporary "Brazilian music." The so-called "São Paulo independent scene" of the early 2010s and its musicians have assumed an outstanding role in this context, projecting many of the most outstanding names associated with what has been described as a "new moment in Brazilian music." The main objective of the study for this paper was to identify and analyze the main specific aspects of this "São Paulo scene." The research is based on a careful collection of data about the field and on interviews with musicians and producers. Interviews were carried out in person or taken from publications found on the Internet. Several specific aspects of this "São Paulo scene" are responsible for stimulating the creativity and productivity of this phenomenon and, at the same time, distinguish it (1) from preceding historical periods of "independent musical production" in Brazil; (2) from the overall contemporary phonographic production in Brazil; and, especially, (3) from the "independent scene and new moment in Brazilian music." With respect to Items 1 and 2, new aspects brought on by digital technologies, new economic advances and new political-cultural observed in Brazil over the last 15 years have all been particularly important. The exceptional opportunities found in São Paulo for the development, continuation and repercussion of independent musical production have all stood out in the specific character of the "São Paulo scene" vis-a-vis the broader "independent Brazilian scene" (Item 3). These opportunities stimulated the migration to São Paulo of a great many independent musicians from other states in Brazil in recent years. The varied and distinct aesthetic contribution brought by these musicians has joined hands with the peculiar musical culture of São Paulo, the creative talent of its musicians, and the city's intense urban character. It is a scene strongly marked by a high level of cooperative output by its agents and by work that has sought to assert itself beyond specific musical genres and categories

AbstractThe dominance of deposit money means commercial banks play a leading role in money creation. This chapter puts this situation in a historical context. The functioning of our financial monetary system and the role of banks have changed fundamentally over time. The chapter reveals that what we take for granted today was often far from self-evident yesterday. We focus on the Netherlands and discuss four periods in turn: (1) the ‘long nineteenth century’ up to the First World War, with an emphasis on the 1870−1914 period, (2) the interwar period (1918−1939), (3) the Bretton Woods period (1944−1973) and (4) the decades leading up to the latest financial crisis (1973−2008).

Abstract:
In the second half of the 16th century, in the garden of the Medicean villa of Pratolino the sculptor Valerio Cioli created, among other groups, the Villano con la falce, which represented a peasant in the act of sawing the reeds in a marshy lake where there was a salamander that spurted water from its mouth. The salamander is now lost while the Villano has been identified so far by critics with the statue of the so-called Mietitore attributed to Cioli and now in the Boboli garden deposits. In the 1990s, during restorations at Pratolino, a stone fragment of a male statue was found: through a careful analysis of the documentary and figurative sources as well as a close comparison with other works certainly by Cioli, this paper aims to recognize the fragment as the Villano con la falce.

Abstract:
Electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3) is a process that uses an electron beam and wire feedstock to fabricate metallic parts inside a vacuum chamber. In this study, single and multiple layer linear deposits of AISI 316L stainless steel were produced with the EBF3 machine at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). EBF3 process parameters, including beam current, translation speed, and wire feed rate, were investigated in order to consider their effects on the resulting steel deposit geometry, microstructure and mechanical properties. Results indicate that the EBF3 process can produce pore-free, fully dense material within the range of process parameters used in this study. The electron beam deposited stainless steel has a solidification microstructure with fine columnar grains within most parts of the deposit due to the high cooling rate during the deposition, with some small homogeneous equiaxed grains at the top of the deposit. The mechanical properties of the deposits are comparable to those of wrought metal, which is attributed to the homogeneous fine-grained microstructure.

Abstract:
Abstract Titanium alloys have found application in many sectors and are regarded as one of the most valuable materials of the 21st century. Although titanium alloys have many promising properties, the tribo-corrosion properties still happen to be a limiting factor. In this research study, radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering was used to deposit refractory ceramic (TiC) thin films coatings on the surface of titanium alloys in order to enhance and improve the wear and corrosion resistance properties. Different combinations of the sputtering process parameters were used for the deposition process. The varied sputtering process parameters were RF Power, sputtering time, and temperature. The macroscratch, microscratch (adhesion test) and, corrosion properties of the coatings were investigated using the pin on-disk wear test, micro-scratch tribometer, and electrochemical potentiostat, respectively. The results show improvement in the wear and corrosion properties of the coated samples. The results also revealed the influence of the sputtering process parameters on the evolving wear and corrosion properties of the coated samples. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to capture the wear scar and analyses the failure mode of the coatings.

Abstract:
After adopting an inflation targeting framework for monetary policy at the turn of the century, the Central Bank of Colombia started actively using the monetary policy interest rate as its key policy tool. In this regard, this paper examines the interest rate pass-through from the monetary policy rate to the retail rates in Colombia and explores asymmetries in the adjustment process within the framework of a non-linear version of the ARDL (NARDL) model developed by Shin et al. (2014). Our findings show that the policy rate plays a key role in determining deposit and lending retail rates but the nature of the pass-through varies across different types of lending products. In the case of lending rates, the pass-through is usually a full one, and takes around 12 months to be nearly complete. Our results capture an asymmetric positive pass-through in deposit rates and an upward rigidity in the lending rates of consumer and ordinary corporate loans, key segments of the credit market. These findings imply that most retail lending rates respond more to policy rate cuts than to hikes, indicating that financial intermediaries are more reluctant to raise interest rates than to decrease them following policy adjustments.
