Full text
Abstract:
Preemptive analgesia focuses on postoperative pain control and the prevention of central sensitization and chronic neuropathic pain by providing analgesia administered preoperatively. Preventive analgesia reduces postoperative pain and consumption of analgesics, and this appears to be the most effective means of decreasing postoperative pain. Preventive analgesia, which includes multimodal preoperative and postoperative analgesic therapies, results in decreased postoperative pain and less postoperative consumption of analgesics. Several advances have been made in our understanding of pain signaling pathways, which have since enabled caregivers to treat pain using a multimodal (or “balanced”) approach to providing adequate pain relief while minimizing side effects. This allows for a reduction in the doses of individual drugs and thus a lower incidence of adverse effects from any particular medication used for analgesia.

Carvalho, Henrique. The Preventive Turn in Criminal Law. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780198737858.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book presents a theoretical examination of the rise and expansion of preventive criminal offences that has gained momentum in Anglo-American criminal justice since the late twentieth century. It shows how recent transformations in criminal law and justice are intrinsically related to and embedded in the way liberal society and liberal law have been imagined, developed, and conditioned by their social, political, and historical contexts. The book starts by identifying a tension, within contemporary criminal law, between the importance given to the expression of individual autonomy and responsibility, and the perceived need for prevention as a condition for the security of autonomy and the promotion of welfare. The book then traces this tension back to an intrinsic ambivalence within the modern conception of individual liberty, which is both repressed and preserved by liberal conceptions of responsibility and punishment. It finds that it is this tension that ultimately grounds the rise of preventive criminal offences in recent times. The Preventive Turn in Criminal Law engages with the main contemporary literature on criminal law, prevention, risk, security, and criminalization, by deploying a theoretical perspective from both classical and contemporary works of social and political theory, including the works of Hobbes, Locke, Hegel, and Bentham. It does so in order to reveal that the pervasiveness of prevention in twenty-first century criminal law not only represents the consequence of new and unprecedented features of contemporary politics and society, but also embeds long-established features of the liberal legal and political tradition.

Full text
Abstract:
Pain created by surgery has the ability to produce both structural and functional changes in pain pathways. These changes may be reduced if timely and adequate pain relief is delivered to the patient. Poor control of pain can result in remodeling of the “hardwired” pathways involved in pain transmission, which can result in central sensitization and hyperalgesia. Furthermore, poorly controlled pain and delay in its recognition may lead to a chronic pain state, further complicating the patient’s recovery and quality of life. A multimodal approach taking into account psychosocial aspects of the patient is more likely to mitigate the development of chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP).

Full text
Abstract:
Integrative medicine (IM), defined as the appropriate use of all evidence-based healthcare practices and professions—complementary and conventional—is evolving as an important aspect of preventive medicine in the last twenty years to achieve population health. With the creation of the National Prevention, Health Promotion and Public Health Council in the United States, representing cabinet-level agencies, there was an opportunity to truly reform the basic approach to preventive medicine from an integrative perspective. Other advances in prevention show the steady global progress of integrative preventive medicine (IPM) in both concept and operations. As these developments evolve, what lessons can we learn from the last twenty years of IM to make a difference in establishing and maintaining a healthy and resilient population in the twenty-first century? This chapter summarizes some of those lessons and describes a vision for IPM in addressing the current health challenges faced by the world.

Guideline for Preventive Chemotherapy for the Control of Taenia solium Taeniasis. Pan American Health Organization, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275123720.

Full text
Abstract:
The larval stage of the parasite Taenia solium can encyst in the central nervous system causing neurocysticercosis, which is the main cause of acquired epilepsy in the countries in which the parasite is endemic. Endemic areas are those with the presence (or likely presence) of the full life cycle of Taenia solium. The parasite is most prevalent in poor and vulnerable communities in which pigs roam free, open defecation is practiced, basic sanitation is deficient, and health education is absent or limited. Several tools are available for the control of Taenia solium. Preventive chemotherapy for Taenia solium taeniasis, which is directed at the adult tapeworm, is one of them. Other tools focus on pig management, pig vaccination and treatment, sanitation and hygiene, and community education. Three potential drugs—niclosamide, praziquantel, and albendazole—have been considered for use for preventive chemotherapy in Taenia solium taeniasis control programs through mass drug administration or targeted chemotherapy. In this Guideline, we provide recommendations for preventive chemotherapy in Taenia solium-endemic areas using niclosamide, praziquantel, or albendazole, including at which dose and in which population groups. The development of this Guideline is based on the latest standard World Health Organization methods for guideline development, including the use of systematic search strategies, synthesis, quality assessment of the available evidence to support the recommendations, and participation of experts and stakeholders in the Guideline Development Group and External Review Group. The recommendations are intended for a wide audience, including policymakers and their expert advisers, and technical and program staff at governmental institutions and organizations involved in the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of preventive chemotherapy programs for the control of Taenia solium.

Abstract:
Abstract:
This essay explores the important contribution of blind musicians to French eighteenth-century culture and examines the ways in which they negotiated the dramatic political and social changes that occurred between 1750 and 1830. Sonic regeneration was considered pivotal to French society both before and after the Terror of Revolution. Blind musicians exploited their abilities in the sonic sensory arts by brilliantly adapting their musical abilities to late eighteenth-century medical codes of health and preventive care. This enabled them not only to ensure their important position within a regenerated modern French society but also to lead the way in establishing new creative modes of musical expression within the new citizen-state.
