Abstract:
INTRODUCTION & AIMS This study aimed to establish a low-cost, sustainable exercise program for cancer patients in Gippsland, Australia, where access to such programs was previously limited. By developing and implementing a collaborative program, the program aimed to improve the physical and psycho-social well-being of cancer patients while reducing burden on healthcare services. METHODS Collaboration between Latrobe Community Health Service, Morwell Leisure Centre, and Gippsland Integrated Cancer Service led to the development of a prescriptive exercise program to provide cancer survivors a sustainable cost-effective exercise and cancer program in a community leisure centre. Exercise physiologists provided initial assessments, in which clients allocated to group-based, one-on-one, or home-based exercise sessions. RESULTS After 12 weeks in the program, 100% of participants that had a reassessment improved on at least one physical test and all improved on a subjective measure like fatigue, depression, or self-worth. On average, they saw a 14.88% increase in leg strength, a 12.70% increase in grip strength, and a 16.65% increase in aerobic fitness. Additionally, they reported an average decrease in anxiety (10.96%), depression (1.59%), fatigue (6.09%), and reported illness symptoms (5.24%). Overall, participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the benefits of the program’s psycho-social support and the opportunity to exercise outside a healthcare setting. CONCLUSION Collaboration between healthcare and leisure centres can provide sustainable and cost-effective exercise programs for cancer patients, improving physical and psycho-social well-being while reducing healthcare burden. Participants valued the support, social interaction, and sense of belonging provided by the program.

People affected with HIV face numerous psycho-social problems in their families and work place. The present study attempted to identify various psychosocial problems faced by HIV positive mothers and their comparison was made with those without HIV. In the study, 320 HIV positive and as many negative mothers, attending OPD of Govt Rajaji Hospital and Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre, Madurai (TN) having children, were included as subjects. All HIV mothers were aware of their HIV status. It was found that majority of HIV positive mothers faced more social problems vis-a-vis HIV negative mothers.

Background: Primary health care approach in ENT health care delivery; has shown to be a budding strategy in alleviating the ENT disease burden in the rural of India, as evident from literature. However the impact of Psycho-social needs fulfillment associated with ENT diseases for achieving optimum ENT care has not been studied till now, which was the main issue addressed by this study. Methods: A Prospective study was done on needs of ENT patients in 6 villages (sampled randomly); in a catchment area of a rural health training centre (RHTC) of a Medical College in western Uttar Pradesh (Muzaffarnagar) from 1st January 2015 to 30th June 2016 by way of a Wellness Triangle approach of WHO exploring Physical, Social and Mental needs from ENT Specialist Services. All the needs of patients were studied by a Semi-structured Performa and data was analyzed by appropriate statistical software’s. Results: Among 384 patients, who attended ENT Specialist services at RHTC for 1.6 years- the majority of patients availing ENT care at RHTC were initially dissatisfied with Psycho-social support provided by ENT Specialists(77%,n=296). However when Psycho-social Component of Patients (n=311, 81%) were fulfilled by both ENT & Community Medicine faculties -the ENT Curative treatment % was higher (n=212, 55.2% vs. n=13, 3.3%, OR=9.8, RR=1.5) and this difference was also statistically significant( p<0.00001). Conclusions: Greater psycho-social support is needed by ENT patients; apart from focus on pure curative approach by otorhinolaryngologist. The full-filing of psycho-social needs of ENT patients, needs more attention by both ENT specialists and community physicians for delivering ENT care by primary health care approach.

In the article there is considered the content of the terms of such branches of science as "psycho-hygiene" and "psycho-prophylaxis", the history of the incurrence, tasks, structure, interrelationship and significance in the activity of specialists taking part in the elimination of consequences of radiation accidents and incidents. Psycho-hygiene, presenting a part of general hygiene, is an interdisciplinary field of scientific knowledge referred to general and social hygiene, social and medical psychology, and psychiatry also. It deals with the influence of various environmental factors and labor activity on the mental health of a person, as well as the development and implementation of measures to preserve people's mental health at the public, group and individual levels. The main subject of psycho-hygiene is mentally healthy people, and the most important task is the creation and provision of conditions for the formation of a harmoniously developed personality. In psycho-hygiene, like any other science, there are several areas of activity. These are: fundamental, applied and practical. In the form of the implementation of measures, it is divided into preventive, restorative and curative. Psycho-prophylaxis is a system of state, social, psychological, hygienic and medical measures aimed at ensuring a high level of mental health and preventing the occurrence of mental disorders. Psycho-prophylaxis has such main subject as subclinical, painful manifestations in the psyche of people, in the conditions of occurrence and impact of unfavorable and stressful factors on the person. It develops and implements measures to prevent the occurrence of mental illness, and also facilitates the rehabilitation of people with mental disorders. Considerable attention is paid to the role and importance of psycho-hygiene and psycho-prophylaxis in the activity of emergency rescue teams. In the course of the elimination of consequences of radiation accidents and incidents, in this category there is possible the appearance of psychological trauma with a complex, specific and multifactorial stress effect that underlies a whole spectrum of mental disorders. The implementation of a complex of timely psycho-preventive measures will allow reveal initial signs of mental disadaptation, psychosomatic pathology, emotional burnout and determine effective measures for restoring and preserving mental health in emergency rescue specialists of teams of Federal Medical Biophysical Centre of the the Federal Medical Biological Agency of Russia.

Abstract:
Background: Cancer care has suffered during the covid-19 pandemic due to diversion of manpower to treat covid patients and introduction of lockdown measures. Delay in treatment is detrimental to cancer patients. During the national lockdown, many patients were not able to visit our treatment facility. We conducted this study to evaluate the detriment caused by the pandemic on cancer care in terms of disease progression and the socio economic factors associated with delay in presentation.Materials and Methods: Patients visiting our OPD who were being treated at our department and could not visit the facility during the lockdown were selected. Present status of the disease was assessed using clinical examination and radiological tests. Psycho social distress was assessed using PO BADO SF questionnaire. Disease progression, cause of delay was assessed against various factors like per capita family income, cost of transportation etc. Appropriate statistics was used to analyse and represent the data. Results: 50% patients had disease progression. “High cost of transportation” was the most common response given by patients for not visiting the treatment facility during the lockdown. Most patients being treated with radiotherapy (69%) had responded either “high cost of transportation” or “lack of proper accommodation” as cause of delay (p 0.065). Patients with treatment gap of 80 days or more had higher per capita family income, higher cost of transportation during the lockdown and larger distance between residence and treatment facility. 77.5% patients had psycho social distress according to assessment by PO BADO SF questionnaire.Conclusion: COVID 19 pandemic control measures have impacted cancer care in resulting in disease progression, treatment delays and psycho-social distress. A number of factors may have contributed to the treatment delays like high cost of transportation during the lockdown, longer distance between residence and hospital.

For the Nigerian government to achieve a united, strong, and self-reliant nation, some variables like the socio-economic status of the parents, costly textbooks, the problem of feeding allowances for students, the low motivation of teachers due to low salaries, expensive tuition fees, the unemployment of qualified subject teachers, the lack of teaching aids, insecurity, and so on needs to be considered. Above all, psycho-social variables on the part of the students equally needs to be considered. In line with this, the researcher deemed it fit to investigate psycho-social factors as predictors of disabled students’ academic achievement in General studies at the University of Ilorin. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population for this study was all disabled University of Ilorin undergraduates. A questionnaire was used for data collection. Demographic characteristics of the respondents were described using percentages and the research question generated was answered using mean and rank order. All of the hypotheses formulated for this study were tested using the Mean, Standard Deviation, t-value and ANOVA. The hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings of this study revealed that there were no significant differences in the influence of psycho-social factors on disabled students’ achievement in General Studies on the basis of gender. In addition, findings revealed that there was no significant difference in the influence of psycho-social factors on disabled students’ achievement in General Studies on the basis of age. It was also found that there was no significant difference in the influence of psycho-social factors on disabled students’ achievement in General Studies on the basis of educational level. Furthermore, findings revealed that there was no significant difference in the influence of psycho-social factors on disabled students’ achievement in General Studies on the basis of the mode of entry. Hence, it was recommended that counselling units in the university should be made more accessible and friendly to disabled students so that they can easily visit the centre for guidance. Government and school management should ensure harmonious relationships for every disabled student regardless of their level or class. Students should not see age as a barrier for interacting with their colleagues.

Malgré son intérêt heuristique, très peu d’études ont été menées à propos des représentationssociales de l’autisme. Et dans cette étude nous utilisons le concept de représentations socialespour analyser la façon dont les éducateurs qui exercent leurs métier dans les centrespsychopédagogiques et qui n’ont eu aucune formation sur l‘autisme, perçoivent les enfantsatteintes de l‘autisme et nous nous sommes interrogés également sur la manière dont cesprofessionnels reconnaissent ces enfants en matière des signes observés.La présente recherche s'investit dans la compréhension et l'explication des difficultésrencontrées dans la reconnaissance de l’autisme retrouvées par les éducateurs, selon lareprésentation sociale que ceux-ci ont de ce trouble.Notre premier objectif est l’autisme en tant qu’objet de représentation sociale et plus enparticulier pour repérer les critères de différenciation et d’indifférenciation de l’autisme dansleurs représentations sociales. Nous interrogerons l'élément fondamental de la représentation,le « noyau central » qui détermine à la fois la signification et l'organisation de lareprésentation et vérifier comment les éducateurs hiérarchisent les critères d’identification del’autisme ce qui va permettre de connaitre l’ordre subjectif de ces signes pour les éducateursau niveau des CPP. De plus, pour permettre de dévoiler à la fois les aspects cognitifs etsociaux de leurs savoirs « naïfs » sur l’autisme.Cette recherche peut également s'inscrire dans le cadre d'une recherche d'innovation dans lamesure où elle vise à apporter au système en place une nouveauté. En effet, elle s'avèreintéressante dans la mesure où, elle dévoile leurs systèmes de croyances, les stéréotypes, lesvaleurs produites et partagées par les individus d’un même groupe et leurs positionnementvis-à-vis les connaissances scientifiques afin de dégager des stratégies pour une sensibilisationmieux ciblée.Nos résultats montrent bien que les éducateurs partagent un savoir du sens commun surl‘autisme. Et nous avons trouvé que pour les éducateurs non-formés, un enfant autiste est unindividu qui vis dans son propre monde et qui a des troubles de communication. Il s’agit dedeux critères centraux pour la reconnaissance de l’autisme autrement dite ; le noyau central deleurs représentations se compose de ces deux éléments considérés comme non-négociables.Nous avons vérifié également l’effet de différents variables comme le sexe, le statutprofessionnels des éducateurs sur les représentations sociales de l‘autisme chez les éducateursnon-formés. Et dans une deuxième étape nous avons essayé d’analyser les pratiquesprofessionnelles des éducateurs formés et les éducateurs non-formés dans leurs travaux avecles enfants autistes au niveau des centres spécialisés de l’autisme ainsi que les centrespsychopédagogiques qui accueillent des enfants avec déficience intellectuelle
Despite its heuristic interest, very few studies have been made about social representationsof autism. And in this study, we use the concept of social representations to analyze howeducators exercise their profession in these psycho-educational centers, and had no training inautism, perceive children affected by autism, and we wondered about the way that theseprofessionals recognize these children in terms of signs observed.This research is involved in understanding and explaining the difficulties in the recognitionand differentiation of autism found by educators, according to the social representation thatthey have this disorder.Our first objective is autism as an object of social representation and in particular to identifythe criteria of differentiation and non-differentiation of autism in their social representations.We will interrogate the fundamental representation, the "core" that determines both themeaning and organization of the representation and check how educators prioritize theidentification of autism criteria which will allow knowing the subjective nature of these signs.This research can also be seen in the context of a search for innovation insofar as it seeks tobring up new things to the system. In fact, it is interesting insofar as it reveals their beliefsystems, stereotypes, values produced and shared by individuals within a group and their positioning towards the scientific knowledge to develop strategies for a more focusedawareness.Our results show that educators share common sense knowledge about autism. And wefound that for untrained teachers, an autistic child is an individual who lives in his own worldand has communication disorders. there are two central criteria for the recognition of autismcalled otherwise, the core of their representations consists of these two elements. We alsoexamined the effect of different variables such as sex, professional status of teachers on socialrepresentations of autism in this population

Abstract:
Hepatitis C is a fast growing infectious disease in Australia and is often associated with related psycho-social and mental health problems. The conventional treatment process for hepatitis C is challenging due to a number of reasons. This study explored social workers’ perceptions of the contribution of their role in hepatitis C treatment centres in relation to the treatment experience of patients. The roles that social workers fulfill, their contribution to the multidisciplinary team and towards a culturally competent service, were explored. Furthermore the knowledge, skills and values required for providing a competent service in a hepatitis C treatment setting was explored. The broad theoretical frameworks that inform social work practice were considered, especially the biopsycho-social model, the strengths perspective, the critically reflexive approach and communications theory. This qualitative study used a semi-structured interview method for data collection. Ten social workers in hepatitis C treatment clinics participated in the study. The findings highlight the needs of patients and how social worker participants described helping to address and meet these needs by employing their knowledge, skills and values through their social work roles and interventions in a team context in a multicultural and multi-faceted work environment. A major challenge that social workers described was to keep patients on treatment despite debilitating side effects that diminish patients' motivation to complete treatment. A shortcoming in the service was described to be the limited psychiatric support available at many treatment centres. The findings lead to a number of recommendations to improve social work services in hepatitis C treatment settings. More research was recommended in areas such as motivational techniques, psychiatric support, and effective group work strategies. The need for increased funding for social work positions in the hepatitis C field was also highlighted. It is anticipated that findings of this study can be applied to hepatitis C treatment in broader settings such as prisons, drug and alcohol settings and general practice. This research will contribute to literature in the field of hepatitis C treatment models and in the field of social work practice in hepatitis C contexts.

Abstract:
Adolescents with cancer are surviving at improved rates with levels of psychopathology in line with their healthy peers. Thus, recent psycho-oncology research is focusing on finding significant predictors to their positive adjustment and psychosocial functioning. The author examined adolescent cancer survivors (n = 50; diagnosis age = 10 – 21; 2 – 10 years post-diagnosis) to test the mediation effects of positive emotionns (satisfaction with life, subjective happiness, and optimism) and time perspective on the outcome variables quality of life and benefit finding with demographic/medical variables (gender, number of treatments received for cancer, and previous psychotherapy) as independent variables. Results indicated that positive emotions fully mediated the relationship between the number of treatments received for cancer and quality of life and partially mediated the relationship between having engaged in psychotherapy and quality of life with adolescent cancer survivors. Importantly, results indicated that patients' with a relapse diagnosis scored significantly different than those with no relapse diagnosis on quality of life. Although positive emotions were significantly associated with scores on benefit finding in a positive direction, benefit finding did not fit two of the four criteria for mediation. Time perspective indices did not meet full criteria for significant mediation with the relationships between independent and outcome variables. Regarding time perspective indices, significant associations included: prior participating in psychotherapy was associated with higher scores on a Past-Negative time perspective, the more treatments received for cancer was associated with higher scores on a Present-Focused time perspective, and higher scores on the Past-Negative time perspective was associated with lower scores on benefit finding. Discussion centers on the use of evidence-based interventions that cultivate positive emotions with adolescent cancer survivors and the utility of implementing quality of life assessment in pediatric medical settings. Continued emphasis is placed on larger sample sizes via multi-center cooperation that may better illustrate adjustment difficulties within subgroups of this population (i.e. relapse diagnosis). Future research considerations are provided for the constructs of time perspective and benefit finding.

Well-being at work has been regarded as a psychological construct brought about by positive links with work and with the organization. This investigation, which approached the impact of working context and resilience on the well-being of the Psycho-Social Attention Center (CAPS) Professionals from two Brazilian cities aimed to add findings to the area s knowledge. The CAPS are public services replacing the asylum model for the treatment of people suffering from psychic problems, backed up by and with foundations on the National Policy for Mental Health (PNSM). The theoretical conception used in this work, by its turn, approaches resilience at work as a positive psychological state related to the performance at work even in complex, wearing-out situations. Regarding working context evaluation, it was considered that it is depicted as a subjective interpretation of the professionals about the working conditions, the organization of work, and the social-professional relationship. 81 professionals from the CAPS of cities Petrolina PE and São Bernardo do Campo SP, 37 years old on average (DP = 10.45), mostly female in sex (65.4por cento) with schooling above college degree and complete post-graduation (both 29%), who declared to be married or at stable unity (39%). In this study, well-being at work was considered as the criterion variable, and resilience at work and working conditions, as predictors. A quiz was applied to collect the participants social-demographic data and three valid Brazilian scales, being: Well-being-at-work Inventory (IBET-13), Resilience-at-Work Scale (ERT), and Work Context Evaluation Scale (EACT). Statistical, exploratory, and descriptive analysis were carried out, as well as regression analysis, and variance analyses (ANOVA) to describe participants, variables, and test the model. The results partly backed up the prediction model, for the social-professional factor confirmed itself as significant predictor for Well-Being at Work, when there was no significant prediction from the other variables (Working Conditions, Working Organization, and Resilience at Work). These data can reveal that good social-professional relationships tend to increase the satisfaction level and affective organizational commitment with the institution, as well as the increase in the engagement level of these professionals with their work.
Este estudo teve como intuito investigar o impacto do contexto de trabalho e da resiliência sobre o bem-estar no trabalho em profissionais dos Centros de Atenção Psicossocial (CAPS). Os CAPS são serviços públicos substitutivos ao modelo asilar para tratamento de pessoas em sofrimento psíquico, preconizado e fundamentado na Política Nacional de Saúde Mental (PNSM). Para medir o contexto de trabalho utilizou-se a Escala de Avaliação do Contexto de Trabalho (EACT) que investiga as condições de trabalho, a organização do trabalho e as relações sócio profissionais. Já o instrumento utilizado para medir a capacidade dos trabalhadores em manter o nível de desempenho no trabalho mesmo em situações complexas e desgastantes foi a Escala de Avaliação de Resiliência no Trabalho (EART). Por último, investigou-se o nível de bem-estar do público pesquisado através do Inventário de Bem- Estar no Trabalho (IBET-13). O bem-estar no trabalho tem sido considerado como um construto psicológico resultado de vínculos positivos com o trabalho e com a organização. Participaram 81 profissionais dos CAPS das cidades de Petrolina PE e São Bernardo do Campo SP, com idade média de 37 anos (DP= 10,45), em sua maioria do sexo feminino (65,4%), com níveis de escolaridade acima do ensino superior e pós-graduação completa (ambos com 29%), que se declararam casados ou em união estável (39%). Neste estudo, considerou-se bem-estar no trabalho como variável critério e resiliência no trabalho e contexto de trabalho como preditores. Foram realizadas análises estatísticas exploratórias e descritivas, análises de regressão e análises de variância (ANOVA) para descrever participantes, variáveis e testar o modelo. Os resultados apoiaram parcialmente o modelo de predição, pois apenas o fator relações sócio profissionais se confirmou como preditor significativo de Bem-estar no Trabalho, e não houve predição significativa com as demais variáveis (Condições de Trabalho, Organização do Trabalho e Resiliência no Trabalho). Estes dados podem revelar que boas relações sócio profissionais tendem a aumentar o nível de satisfação e comprometimento organizacional afetivo com a instituição, bem como o aumento do nível de envolvimento desses profissionais com seu trabalho.

Professional treatises and articles in commercial media having breast carcinoma in the heading characterize it mostly as an epidemiologically serious phenomenon. This fact cannot be doubted regarding to occurrence of this carcinoma disorder of women (in minimal cases of men). At present the patients become co-coordinators of the treatment in far bigger rate than they used to. Studies and practical experience in this context show that only quantitative aspects of life like the length are not the determined ones for the patient, but more and more patients prefer quality of the survival. Traditional medicine under the pressure of such findings tends to modify treatment procedures in relation with keeping certain quality of life of oncological patients. That is the reason why traditional medicine in the objectives of psychooncology specialization maps the rate of such level, searches preferences of the patients in context of type of the carcinoma, the stage of the disease, individual emotional attitudes etc. Psychooncology becomes an equal partner to radiology, surgery, pathology, oncology and psychology itself in terms of help patients. The possibility to provide psychooncological investigation in the centre of diagnosis and treatment of breast carcinoma of women Mamografie Nemocnice Písek a.s. and to process the data by the form of diploma work seemed purposeful in this case. In the theoretical part initial conditions of breast carcinoma by traditional medicine were defined {--} diagnosis, cure and consecutive treatment. Common emotional maps while facing cancer diagnosis were defined. Methods of determination quality of life of patients in historical and contemporary trends were mentioned. The selected methodology was described by the form of partially anonymous questionnaires and investigative file of 128 women was characterized. The aim of this work was to search the women with diagnosis of breast carcinoma and development of their partnerships, relationships in extended family, inter - personal relationships at work and to compare quantifiable parameters with the time before setting the diagnosis. Mapping somatic (tiredness, pain, insomnia, digestive problems) and psychosomatic factors determining quality of life of sick women was the major axis of searching and investigation. These aims were applied to defined hypotheses which dealt with goals mentioned in the context of contemporary state of comprehension to help people with oncological diagnosis: breast carcinoma is not only serious somatic problem but also psychosocial issue although psychooncology is not the specialization systematically incorporated into the complex oncological solution of patients at the moment. Dates result in the fact that the factors which contribute most to the quality of life concerning to somatic influences are negatively felt tiredness followed by pain afterwards. The dominant psychical influences include depression, anxiety and insomnia. In psychosocial sphere social support is unambiguously dominantly important for quality of life and according to the literature it can contribute even to the length of survival. Following the data, lucid absence of psychooncological help in early stages after detected disorder and during contingent recovery seemed insufficient. The diploma work was not purposeless. There was a deep interest and support of all medical staff of the mammography centre. If we succeed to include psychooncological intervention into a set of conditions asserted in the horizon of treatment of breast cancer, then the data will daily contribute to help of sick women. By generalization it is possible to outline the way in understanding the complex treatment and solving further oncological diagnoses and procedures.

In the past, the late effects of cancer treatment can’t be observed cause of the low survival rate of childhood cancer. As the survival rate rising, these survivors’ quality of life is gradually valued. Along with the advance of the medical treatment, the childhood brain tumor survivors are also increasing gradually. But, it is complex that brain tumor influence on the function of the central nerve system, the most studies for following up are escape this population of children with brain tumor. So the purposes of this study are to evaluate the neuro-psycho-social health status of the children with brain tumor after treatment, to understand the risk of late effects on the treatment and their biological specialty, furthermore, to evolve the clinical following up tool to track the childhood brain tumor survivors. The adoption of the design of this study is a descriptive survey. It is to investigate 36 5-14- year old children with brain tumor and their caregivers, by using these scales of the personal basic data and history of the disease, Comprehensive Mental Abilities Scale(CMAS), and Childhood Behavior Checklist(CBCL) to collect data. The effect shows, in the aspect of neuro-physiology, the most of these children after treatment suffered with the limitation of body activity, complication of the eyesight and physical strength; In the aspect of mental health, as their cognition ability, the analyzing result intelligence quotient is normal, but two kinds of ability, logic reasons and vision searching are lower than normal scope. These two cent tests of language phrase concept and language gets a goal although within the scope of normal, higher than average value of the norm; The other aspects of the social health, using the form CBCL to exam the behavior of the children, their performance of the ability and the problem of behavior are all belongs to the normal. Their activity participation and social interaction express less in dynamic state and social contact item, and the academic ability expresses the score is in normally the boundary of the scope. The result of this study really puts forward some related and explicit data of the health of these population, let medical treatment teams of childhood brain tumor, employees of nursing, clinical workers, educate related personnel and society understand the long term effects, cause of the disease or the treatment, of the childhood brain tumor. And it also provides concrete suggestions on the caring of their neuro-psycho-social health. How to promote the childhood brain tumor survivors’ quality of life in the future, and to provide the adequacy support to the children and their families which needs a further research. The primary aim of the study was to develop a psychosocial assessment tool for determining willingness to participate in child-centred safety promotion interventions, specifically in a low-income community in South Africa. The secondary aim was to determine the factors associated with willingness to participate. The study employed a mixed methods approach to develop the measure, and included content validation, item writing and initial validation processes. Nominal Group Technique discussions were conducted with various role-players in the relevant communities to inform the development of the instrument, while participatory methodologies were utilised to conceptualise the instrument in relation to psycho-social factors associated with intervention participation, with these categorised according to core dimensions. A Delphi method utilising an expert panel reviewed items for relevance, difficulty and ambiguity, with items subsequently amended or removed. Item selection procedures were conducted on the English version of the instrument and these results were applied to the Afrikaans version. A pilot study was conducted as part of the initial validation in order to test the items and format the questionnaire. The instrument was then administered to Afrikaans speaking individuals in a community in the Western Cape. Iterative exploratory factor analysis was conducted at both the item and scale levels to select and reassign items and scales in order to determine the final composition of the questionnaire. The findings indicate that the instrument measures seven factors, namely incentives; priorities and community needs; perceived benefits; social approval; accessibility and values; altruistic capital; and community cohesion. These factors are explained in terms of the Process-Person-Context-Time model and the Theory of Planned Behaviour, considered within a participatory framework. The study findings indicate that the seven factors represent salient dimensions of the construct willingness to participate in interventions. The questionnaire and its subscales displayed acceptable to good reliability, with Cronbach’s α ranging from 0.55 to 0.80. Since willingness precedes actual participation, it is argued that insight into the factors that relate to willingness to participate provides an avenue for motivating actual participation.

In the introduction of the diploma thesis there is discussed the question which every social worker knows: Could I have done something different? This is the question which is asked by almost everyone, especially a social worker. Further there is a brief outline of topics which are delineated in the diploma thesis. First chapter describes the institution Children´s Center JK Strakonice. Father there is a list of necessary knowledge which a social work should have for his or her occupation. Also the liabilities of the social worker to the clients are not left out. In this part there can be found also work with specific types of clients. For better understanding of the demands of social work in Children ´s Center JK Strakonice the thesis contains selected life stories of the women clients. These life stories should help to the reader to see the problems from different point of view and help to understand how much is important so that the clients decides himself or herself to solve his or her problems. In the second chapter there are described psychological and ethical dimensions of the profession, burnt out syndrome which is threat for everyone of us, especially for a social worker. In this chapter there are depicted causes of formation and manifestations of burnt out syndrome. The third chapter is also connected with the burnt out syndrome. The focus in this chapter is on prevention and protection. The attention is also paid to the personality of a social worker, his or her abilities to perceive the problem, but also experiences in moral decision-making and hierarchical position of values. The compliance of the principles of psycho hygiene and presence of supervision plays a very significant role. In the conclusion of the diploma thesis there is the summary of performance of a social worker in Children´s Center JK Strakonice. Every social worker should realise his or her responsibility not only to his or her clients, employer and colleagues but especially to himself or herself and his or her conscience. The interdependence of profession and conscience merges with the diploma thesis.

Gynaecologists and obstetricians are confronted with many tasks that require biopsychosocial competence, as explained in Chapter 2. Care for patients with unexplained physical symptoms, and patients with chronic incurable diseases, in various phases of their lives, require patient education, health promotion, counselling, and management of psychosocial problems. To obtain this competency, a curriculum is needed, which, besides gynaecology and obstetrics, includes elements of psychology, psycho-social medicine, and psychiatry, adapted to the specific needs of gynaecologists and obstetricians in their everyday work. A basic part of Chapter 2 shows the curriculum consists of teaching the knowledge, and skills derived from communication theory and practice including physician, and patient-centred communication with active listening, responding to emotions and information exchange as well as breaking bad news, risk-counselling, and shared decision-making. Building on these skills, trainees are introduced into the biopsychosocial process of diagnosis, establishing a 9-field comprehensive work-up using the ABCDEFG guideline (Affect, Behaviour, Conflict, Distress, Early life Experiences, False beliefs, Generalised frustration). The therapeutic interventions are based on a working alliance between the physician and the patient, and are taught as basic elements, which have to be combined according to the individual patient and the presenting situation. The overall technique for gynaecologists and obstetricians can be summarised as supportive counselling/psychotherapy. This includes elements such as catharsis, clarifying conflicts and conflict resolution, cognitive reframing, insight and understanding, stress reduction techniques, and helping in behavioural change (CCRISH).

AbstractEating disorders are severe mental disorders with serious medical complications and poor long-term outcome, which typically develop during adolescence. Subclinical symptoms, such as body dissatisfaction, dieting, and binge eating, are common among adolescents, also in Luxembourg. Body perception, including how the body looks (visual perception) and how it feels (interoception), is altered on multiple levels in eating disorders. We construe interoception as a multilevel process, where signals are transmitted from the periphery to the central nervous system for further processing and initiation of physiological and behavioural responses to maintain homeostatic balance. Examples from research on young women in Luxembourg include delayed responses to satiation and abnormal gastric motility in people who binge eat, and increased cortical processing of heartbeats in patients with anorexia nervosa. Understanding the complexity of alterations in visual and interoceptive body perception, as well as their interactions with the bio-psycho-social changes associated with adolescence, is essential for the selection and further development of adequate intervention and prevention programmes. Modern approaches based on biofeedback and virtual reality may be particularly appealing to adolescents, and are currently being investigated in Luxembourg.

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a group of genetic conditions that cause fragile and blistering skin. Although there are different types of EB, which differ in severity, their signs and symptoms overlap. As a result of this disorder, patients face an unbearable burden in their lives, and their Quality of Life (QoL) is negatively affected at every life cycle stage. Nevertheless, the assessment of the quality of life of these patients is scanty. This project aims to develop a patient-centered questionnaire to assess the QoL of EB patients. This tool will be a valid aid for clinicians to understand patients better and identify the areas that need more attention; moreover, it will allow them to follow the patients over time and evaluate the impact of any treatments. The methodological process to develop the questionnaire consisted of two phases: firstly, a critical review of scientific literature was performed; secondly, a pseudo-Delphi study was carried out. A multidisciplinary panel (including patients, caregivers, and clinicians) actively participated in round tables to discuss the main areas of interest. Starting from this initial set of areas and through the repetition of Delphi (up to three rounds), a gradual refinement of the statements was carried out to define a list of items to be included in an easy-to-use but meaningful questionnaire. The final patient-centered questionnaire is thus able to measure the QoL beyond the physical symptoms and the clinical evolution of the disease, encompassing functional autonomy, psycho-emotional state, social relations and the working field.

This chapter reviews the psycho-social aspects of trauma and related disorders. A wealth of information has accumulated over the decades of research on the trauma and related disorders. However, some aspects of trauma are still debatable globally such as definition of trauma, diversity in expression and response across individuals and cultures. Exposure to trauma can lead to troubling memories, psycho-physical arousal and avoidance of the event, has been a central theme in literature. Until researchers have realized the complexity of trauma transcends the relatively narrow definition of trauma. Cultural diversity in trauma and related disorders have brought into notice the multi-dimensional nature of trauma which is the focus of this chapter.

Psycho-oncology addresses the two major psychiatric and psychological dimensions of cancer: first, the responses of patients and their families at all stages of disease and the psychological stresses on health professionals delivering their care. The patient and physician relationship, dependent on effective communication, impacts the care of all patients, at every visit, at all sites and stages of cancer, and during all treatments. The second dimension addresses the psychological, behavioural, and social factors that influence cancer risk, detection, and survival. Many cancer centres and hospitals now have multi-disciplinary psychosocial teams consisting of clinicians and clinical investigators from psychology, psychiatry, social work, nursing, and clergy. These teams provide consultation for patients and their caregivers, psychosocial education for oncology staff, and collaboration in studies in which quality of life is important. In addition, active research in brain, immune, and endocrine links is occurring, particularly in the mechanism of cytokines in producing ‘sickness behaviour’ that may provide a biological basis for common symptoms of fatigue, depression, anxiety, weakness, and cognitive chances in cancer patients. Despite the fact that many cancer centres and oncology divisions now have a psycho-oncology or psychosocial unit, only a few centres have programmes that include both research and training. This chapter describes the common psychiatric disorders and psychosocial challenges experienced by cancer patients and the range of interventions available.

This contribution builds upon research into the reconstruction of cultural heritage, reparations, and victimhood in post-conflict settings. It focuses on the example of Cambodia but references other temporally more distant and recent cases as well. It combines legal human rights approaches with those of heritage studies to propose that the harm done to individuals and communities by violence against cultural heritage is more complex than hitherto thought. We explore measures to develop meaningful forms of repair that can contribute to overcoming the long-term effects of cultural violence through processes of the co-creation and development of heritage across generations. Cambodia serves as the main example of how community-led heritage recovery unfolds and of its links to psycho-social recovery. We advocate that psycho-social recovery of the community be considered central to heritage recovery work and not just a hoped-for side-effect.

Although suicide appears to be an individual act, this auto-destructive behaviour occurs in a wider context. According to statistics, suicide is strongly ingrained in the Maya culture of Mexico. Why do the Maya in the Yucatecan area have the highest suicide indexes in the country? This text proposes a psycho-anthropological perspective which focuses on the Maya religion and traditions with the central theme of suicide. If the process is understood, we can then develop better strategies for its prevention. This work proposes that suicide is much more than a medical issue. A psycho-anthropological approach towards suicide seems to be worthwhile when added to other psychiatric models in mental health. This perspective could be fruitful for understanding other social groups around the world that share a culture, inherited traditions, and religious beliefs about suicide.

This chapter examines the prevalence and pathways to the diagnosis of dementia, as well as dementia care infrastructure, in the Republic of Ireland. The economic burden of dementia in Ireland is explored, including both formal and informal costs. Dementia care in the community, residential, and acute hospital settings is described. Associated policy, legislation, standards, and guidelines relevant to dementia care in Ireland are addressed. Current funding structures are examined. The contributions of dementia-specific educational efforts and relevant research in Ireland are highlighted. Challenges encountered in moving from a more traditional medical model of dementia care to a psycho-social, person-centred care model in Ireland, including inequitable funding allocation, are outlined.

This case study explores a unique service-learning program from inception to evaluation through the in-depth examination of community relationships, outcomes students have attained and the ongoing community benefits. The case study demonstrates specific service-learning implementation techniques and reflection processes that challenge students to apply their experiences to their own educational goals and experiences. At Ripon College the Center for Social Responsibility supervises a successful and innovative service-learning program; the Storybook program. In collaboration with the Green Lake County Correctional Facility (GLCCF) this program has college students meet with inmates to select and practice reading children's books on video. The book and recording are sent to the inmate's child(ren) to maintain familial relationships during incarceration. Based firmly in adult literacy pedagogy this service-learning experience has multiple simultaneous psycho-social outcomes for all involved.

The present paper aims at investigating both the skills of the e-learning system and the role of the managing staff, the tutor respectively. It also aims to identify mechanisms and methods of communication in the virtual community between students and tutors so that each student can gain insight into the information provided in accordance with their education, culture and areas of interest. Through the diversity and complexity of context, the Web environment promotes collaborative action at the level of the educational act, through the interaction of the student with the instructor or other students. The penetration of new communication technologies in education has led to the rethinking and reorganization of the educational systems, implicit with regard to the role of teachers. Thus, the e-learning system was developed which, compared with the traditional one, offers new ways of transmitting knowledge. Teaching in virtual learning space requires a change of paradigm, so, if the traditional teaching model is centered on the teacher who tries to transfer knowledge to his students, in the e-learning environment teaching is centered on the relationship between teacher-student and student-knowledge. The paper will also approach the method of presentation of the educational content for mobile-learning platforms. The main element that has to be taken into consideration at the time of the creation of such content is the fact that the m-learning has its peculiarities, among which the most important is the diversity of external factors that can distract, interrupt or disrupt the educational activity. That's why the content should be dosed in small structures to synthesize the ideas. A virtual group can meet the most unexpected categories of students that the instructor is meant to co-ordinate and to help them communicate in authentic way. Traditional education claims the prerogative of direct dialogue between teacher and students, which create an ideal framework for modeling personality, for maintaining the strong spirit of competition, but also for providing mutual psychological support. Without claiming exclusivity, virtual education offers new opportunities for communication and training, becoming more and more popular. Participation in an online course is regarded as a real life experience. The extraordinary interaction between students and tutor in a virtual community in which everyone participates, is considered the educational challenge of the twenty-first century!

It is well known to anyone who has had a direct or indirect hospital experience how the sterile and aseptic healthcare system often generates negative emotions such as anxiety, frustration, and pain. It is usually due to the exclusively functional aspect of medical equipment (MRI scans, ventilators, ultrasounds, etc.), which induces fear and perception of threat, neglecting the importance of formal and emotional aspects within the healthcare environment. In the last decade, the intervention of Design on hospital aesthetics, products, communication, and services has allowed a partial reduction of stress and anxiety levels, improving patient satisfaction and guaranteeing, at the same time, health and healing.However, the contribution of Design becomes even more decisive when it comes to pediatric patients, who need a hospital system that considers their needs, feelings and opinions. Therefore, the vision of the patient as a person with psycho-emotional and relational, as well as physical and functional requirements, led the designers to design equipment and spaces with a pleasant and familiar appearance, which would favour the reduction of the trauma of hospitalisation and negative emotions experienced by young patients. Although some design interventions present in the literature demonstrate great sensitivity towards the world of children, the contribution of Design in the hospital setting is still minimal.Based on the scientific contributions provided by various disciplines such as Affective sciences, Social and Cognitive Neurosciences, Cognitive Psychology and Design, this research addresses the issue of children's affectivity in the evaluation and Design of positive user experiences. It questions the possible areas of implementation and the evaluation strategies and tools of Human-Centered Design (HCD), User Experience (UX), Affective Evaluation Methods (AEM) of Psychology, Affective Sciences, and Cognitive Ergonomics that allow the measurement of emotions. Specifically, the study aims to understand the following:- how it is possible to evaluate the emotional impact generated by the health system on the child;- the emotional response of children in interaction with the health product-service system.In particular, the study's main focus was analysing the emotional impact generated by the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination before and after the examination simulation procedure with the Philips Kitten Scanner to understand the actual contribution.This research presents the results of a survey conducted within the diagnostic imaging department of the Meyer University Hospital in collaboration with the NOS ERGOMeyer group and the Ergonomics & Design laboratory of the University of Florence.The methodological approach of the research was quantitative and envisaged the application of Ergonomics for Design and Human-Centered Design methods. Specifically, the single-centre observational survey was conducted by structured interviews and questionnaires addressed to healthcare personnel and psychologists who work with children, especially in the hospital setting.From the survey, it was possible to grasp and define: the main behaviours and emotional factors linked to the hospital world, the primary emotional difficulties of the child linked both to the disease, but also to the context of care, the negative impact of medical instruments/equipment, the benefits and the criticalities related to the preparation of the MRI exam, but above all the importance of the game in minimising the negative emotions associated with medical procedures and the hospital system. Therefore, the survey highlighted many possibilities for implementing and developing design solutions to improve the young patient's emotional experience.

Addictive behavior in adolescents may be due to difficulties in adapting and socializing. Today, teens are exposed to a large number of risk factors that negatively affect their behavior and health. The analysis of the close social environment and the personal characteristics of adolescents, consumers of toxic substances, highlights the fact that addictive behavior is the result of both the influence of personal and microsocial factors. The latest research and publications acknowledge that for some adolescents, drug use is part of a lifestyle. In this regard, programs to prevent the use of toxic substances are based on learning centered on the model of social influence. The main purpose of socio-psycho-correctional prevention programs is to create the optimal conditions for training the mechanisms to deal with pathogenic influences. Educational programs for the prevention of addictive behavior are recognized as the most effective in the context of combining psychosocial and causal models. Our study is more interested in the primary prevention of addictive behavior in adolescents.

There are many benefits from fostering interaction among students of diverse backgrounds in classrooms. To enhance students’ potential psycho-social and intellectual development, instructors need to do more than foster group interaction. They need to encourage and teach skills for diverse students to be able to genuinely communicate their differences in knowledge, perspectives, and expectation states. An expectation state is defined as an anticipation of the quality of group members’ future task performances and is shaped by socially ascribed characteristics. Researchers who based their studies on Expectation States Theory found ample evidence that expectation states exert multi-level effects on social dynamics, competence beliefs, and outcome perceptions between individuals with different cultural, ethnic, or socio-economic backgrounds. The present study was a qualitative exploration into the perception of expectation states and teaching of diversity in faculty at two higher-education institutions in the south-central United States. The sample consisted of ten faculty members. The methods employed comprised a combination of qualitative techniques. The focus was to identify <em>how</em> and <em>where</em> the themes of expectation states arose in the teaching and learning of diversity, <em>what</em> the attitudes were toward these themes and topics, and <em>how</em> these attitudes informed faculty’s pedagogy. A thematic analysis of the data collected revealed four main themes: 1) considering broader contextual factors to understand potential challenges in group learning involving diverse learners, 2) recognizing expectation states stemming from socially ascribed attributes, 3) striving to break presumed or preconceived expectations, and 4) incorporating experiential learning strategies towards effective diversity education. The implications of these findings for diversity training and multicultural education are discussed.

We analyze Paneurhythmy through the perspective of the theo-anthropological approach to physical education. This psycho-physical system of exercises combines rhythmic movements with ideas, music, and poetry, performed in a group, with specific space organization, in the open. The author, Beinsa Douno, is a founder of a Christian philosophy for a life in harmony with nature, where exercising is important for personality development. We analyze: 1. Constituent elements: movements, music, and poetic text; 2. Performance: person, pairs, and group; 3. Education: relations and personality development. Conclusions: The movements are functional and suitable for all: multi-planar and multi-joint movements involving symmetrically the left and right parts of the body, with full range of motion in the joints, exercised in upright position, in walking, for coordination, balance and functional strength; the music is classical type for inspirational concentration and the poetic text is dominated by the notions for positive emotions, love and joy, and light, including the notion of God in non-religious context. During performance of Paneurhythmy the full potential of a person is activated, physical and spiritual, and social ethics develops by coordinating one's performance with the partner and the group around a unifying center. The educational process is founded on mutual respect and discussions focused on personality development and character qualities in a non-profit activity. Paneurhythmy exercises can be considered food for the body encouraging the creation of a harmonious exercising community. It can be an example a physical education practice in line with the theo-anthropological approach.

The article analyses the development and performance a virtual community of practitioners in the field of parent counselling as part of a blended professional development program. This is part of the ‘Education Priority Areas - EPA’ project (2011-2012) funded by UNICEF in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports (MERYS), Institute of Education Sciences (IES) and the network of County Centres for Resources and Educational Assistance (CCREA) aiming to support families with pupils in risk of drop-out. The training program (both face–to-face and at distance) is part of the methodological approach proposed by the IES based on the EPA model implemented earlier in UK and France, adapted for Romanian disadvantaged communities. The direct beneficiaries of the program are school counsellors and teachers working in schools with a high rate of drop-out. Parents’ counselling is an important piece of an integrated intervention program (management, didactics, counselling) to support schools, families and pupils in preventing school drop-out. By the mean of the IES online training platform (training.ise.ro) a virtual learning community was built in order to facilitate the communication between the practitioners, the peer learning and to support them through online tutoring and coaching for parent counselling activities. We start by presenting the aim, structure, type of learning and coaching activities, then we analyse the developed community of practice against a set of social, psycho-pedagogical, technical and managerial criteria according to an integrated model adapted after Conole (2007), Lesser & Storck (2003), McDermott (1999), Palloff & Pratt (1999). Conclusions are drawn in respect with improvement measures of the virtual community in order to better support the recurrent EPA parent counselling interventions.
