Abstract:
The Science Teachers' Development and Training Centre or STDTC (Pusat Pengembangan dan Penataran Guru Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam or PPPG IPA) is an official in-service science teacher training, which is in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Between 1978 and 1997, an in-service science-teacher training project, which is known as the PKG IPA Project, was developed by the Directorate of General Secondary Education. The successful PKG IPA project implemented its own in-service science teacher training system within its own training network across Indonesia, without the involvement of the PPPG IPA as the existing official teacher-training agent. The existence of the project was discontinued when the World Bank loan ended. Unfortunately, the expensive infrastructures developed by the PKG IPA project could no longer be utilized because the PKG IPA project was excluded from the official structure of organization of the Ministry of Education and Culture (MOEC) which is now known as Ministry of National education (MNE). In addition, the ignorance of the staff of the PPPG IPA about the PKG IPA project is one indicator why that the PPPG IPA is facing some problems, which affect the implementation of its duties and functions.Based on this indicator, this study was implemented with two objectives, namely, to investigate and analyze current problems facing the PPPG IPA, and to make recommendations for formulating appropriate policies and strategies in order to rationalize the future roles of the PPPG IPA. The study involved seven research questions, which were grouped into three concerns, namely, the quality of the environment, a needs analysis, and analysis of the Directorate's policies. The seven research questions required different instruments to collect the data. Existing instruments, SLEQ (School Level Environment Questionnaire) and SLEI (Science Laboratory Environment Inventory), ++
were translated into Indonesian. The researcher developed other instruments. The study involved both qualitative and quantitative research methods and types of data, included various sampling strategy classifications, such as purposeful sampling and opportunistic sampling. The data collecting strategy involved surveys, observations, interviews, and mining documents. The study concluded that the PPPG IPA is facing some current problems related to the aspects of working environment, science laboratory environment, human resources, facilities, policies, and in-service training networking. The study recommended that the Ministry of National Education (MNE) formulate appropriate policies and strategies in order to rationalize the roles of the PPPG IPA in order to strengthen the implementation, and improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of the in-service training programs. A new ministerial regulation also is recommended to be released to replace the previous relevant regulations in order to accommodate the above concerns.

Abstract:
Magister Educationis - MEd
Since the inception of the University in 1960 under the Apartheid regime and up until a few years ago Afrikaans had dominated both as educational and as communication medium. However, political change - at the University and in South Africa - has brought about a change in language patterns. According to the HSRC Work Committee on Languages and Language Instruction (1981), a high percentage (40%) of Afrikaans-speaking people classified as coloured and living in the Cape Peninsula choose English as the medium of instruction and also regard it as the most important language to be learnt at schools (also 40%). As a result of this, and the enrolment of a large percentage of Xhosa speaking students, who generally prefer English to Afrikaans as an educational medium, English has become the language most commonly used both inside and outside the classroom. The homogeneity of preference has, however, not been matched by mastery of the language. For approximately 70% of all first-year students English is a second or even a third language. Though University entry is based on at least ten years of the study of English, standards of proficiency differ quite considerably as a result of inequalities in education. Because students need to improve their level of English proficiency I investigated the effectiveness of using senior students as tutor assistants in an academic development programme, the English Special Project, at UWC. This study aims at revealing that the tutor assistantships in the English Special Project can alleviate problems that occur with annual increases in student numbers under certain conditions. These are that: 1 prospective tutor assistants undergo proper tutor assistant training; 2 tutor assistants are committed to the course of academic development; 3 tutor assistants have the time available that is necessary for the task. In Chapter 1 give an insight into what this study is about, the reasons for conducting it and what my personal involvement with the ESP has been. In Chapter 2 I review some of the overseas and local literature on TA systems. In Chapter 3 I describe a case-study to evaluate the success of the TA system in the ESP with reference to academic development. I emphasize the intensive, individual care of and attention to first-year students. In an attempt to address the problem, the effectiveness of senior students as tutor assistants to assist in tutorial sessions is described. In Chapter 4 I discuss the value of TA intervention in the ESP at personal and social levels. Chapter 5 contains the general conclusions and my recommendations to improve the ESP.

Jeong, Soojeong. "The Role of a Peer-Led Academic Intervention in College Students' Development of Self-Regulated Learning: A Person-Centered Approach." DigitalCommons@USU, 2019. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/7656.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to its unsupervised nature, undergraduate education requires students to manage their own learning. They need to use self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies in order to achieve academic success. However, college students often have insufficient regulatory skills and strategies, suggesting the need for substantive and practical support. Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a well-recognized academic intervention that utilizes peer-led study groups for difficult college courses, through which students can develop their SRL abilities. This study focuses on the role of the SI program in college students’ development of SRL from a person-centered perspective. First, this study examines the heterogeneous effects of the SI intervention on students’ development of SRL by combining latent profile modeling and propensity score matching. Second, it explores the changes in student SRL profiles over the intervention period and determines factors affecting the prediction of such changes using latent transition modeling. Results identify three distinct student profiles: competent regulator, self-confident regulator, and goal-oriented regulator. Within the competent regulator profile, both SI and non-SI attendees’ overall SRL scores significantly decreased over time, though non- SI attendees showed a greater downturn. For the self-confident regulator profile, only SI attendees’ overall SRL scores increased. Both SI and non-SI attendees in the goal-oriented regulator profile had small decreases in scores, which were not statistically significant. Regarding students’ longitudinal transitions between SRL profiles, students in the most desirable profile (competent regulator) remained most stable over time. Students’ SRL in the goal-oriented regulator profile was most malleable in a positive way; approximately 40% of these students moved into the competent regulator profile. In addition, students whose decision to attend the SI sessions was more mastery-oriented tended to fall into more positive transition groups. Furthermore, students whose levels of self-confidence in learning, critical thinking skills, and group work skills increased as a result of their participation in SI sessions were more likely to become members of more positive transition groups. The findings of this study extend previous work by longitudinally examining individual differences in college students’ SRL development. They also provide significant implications for the future design of more targeted interventions.

Abstract:
Past research into defining and measuring the characteristics of learning environments in Science Education Centres and Science Museums (SECSMs) has been based upon low-inference measures, such as observations and interviews. Many searchers feel that the diversity of informal education settings in SECSMs makes it difficult to develop high-inference measures for informal learning environments. This study used the semiformal environment of the CSIRO Science Education Centres as a stepping-stone between formal and informal learning environments. A review of learning environment research identified a possible procedure for the development of, and a format for, a suitable instrument. Research in SECSMs was reviewed to identify learning environment factors that defined the CSIROSEC learning environment. A pilot study was conducted to determine the feasibility of developing a learning environment instrument for CSIROSECs. This led to the more formal process of developing a learning environment instrument for CSIROSECs based upon the five scales of Affect, Social Interaction, Novelty, Independence and Involvement.
A number of cycles of testing of the instrument, statistical analyses, and subsequent refinements resulted in the Learning Environment Instrument for CSIRO Science Education Centres (LEI for CSIROSECs). The instrument measures distinct, if somewhat overlapping, aspects of the learning environment. The LEI for CSIROSECs displays comparable measures for internal consistency (alpha reliability) and discriminant validity to existing learning environment instruments. The sensitivity of the instrument has been demonstrated for the comparison of different classes, comparison of teacher-student perceptions, comparison of primary and secondary classes, and the comparison of CSIROSEC programs. Suggestions have been made for applications of the LEI for CSIROSECs and its further development,as well as its potential use in research.

Turpin, Rebecca L. "Psychometric Testing of the Presence of Nursing Scale: Measurability of Patient Perceptions of Nursing Presence Capability of Nurses in an Academic Medical Center." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2016. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/3096.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Nursing presence occurs when nurses expend themselves on the behalf of a unique patient. This phenomenon requires further research to develop instruments. The Presence of Nursing Scale (PONS) measures the patient’s perspective (Kostovich, 2012). Psychometric testing of PONS-Revised using exploratory factor analysis is warranted to further develop a reliable and valid measure of nursing presence. Contextual workplace variables need exploration in inpatient settings for correlation with nursing presence. Method(s): A convenience sample of 122 adult inpatients from ten acute-care nursing units in a Southeastern Magnet hospital were surveyed to conduct the first psychometric testing of this revised instrument using exploratory factor analyses. Seven research questions evaluated potential correlations between the PONS-R, patient satisfaction using nurse-sensitive measures of HCAHPS, nursing unit-specific workforce factors and patient demographic factors. Results: PONS-R demonstrated high internal consistency reliability (r = .974), test-retest reliability (statistically significant at the .01 level) and divergent validity (p=.002). PONS-R compared to nurse HCAHPS measures was statistically significant at the .01 level, (r = .736). EFA revealed one factor (eigenvalues over 1), with a weak secondary factor centered on intimacy factors suggesting addition of items and repeated study with a larger sample size to further psychometrically develop the instrument. Unexpected negative correlations were found with unit-workforce factors including average RN experience level (r= -.185, significant at the .05 level), and average RN age (r = - .218). An unexpected positive correlation was found - percentage of Associate degree nurses (r = .269, statistically significant at the .05 level. The Triangle region was correlated with a higher PONS-R score (p = .038; n=4), otherwise no statistically significant correlations were found for PONS-R and patient demographics nor patient-specific variables such as estimated number of RN providing care, nor length of stay on the unit. Discussion & Conclusions: Further psychometric testing is indicated with larger samples and perhaps with the inclusion of intimacy factor items. Additional correlational studies focused on other patient quality outcomes measures with expansion of nurse demographics is indicated to explore for confounding variables.

Abstract:
This study examines the similarities and differences between males and females from the Hispanic and Non-Hispanic White population in the Central Florida labor force regarding recruitment strategies and techniques of the Baby Boomers, Generation X and the Millennial population. The purpose of this study is to identify those Human Resources recruitment practices that are most effective in retaining: (1) males and females from the Hispanic population, and (2) whether or not theses recruitment tactics affect the generation groups differently. The proposed issues will be assessed by collecting information from organizations, current employees, and job applicants. This study will use three research methods in addressing the stated purpose and objectives: literature review, focus groups, and questionnaire surveys. The literature review will explore present recruitment techniques, social and cultural similarities and differences between Hispanics and Non-Hispanic White, and generational differences. The main goal of the focus groups is to identify relevant recruitment issues as stated by Central Florida organizations, current employees, and job applicants. From the literature review and results of the focus groups two surveys will be develop to determine: (1) present recruitment practices used by Central Florida organizations; and (2) preferred recruitment practices among Hispanics and Non-Hispanic Whites. The results of this study will identify whether certain recruitment practices perceived as being most appealing and desirable vary among Hispanics and Non-Hispanic Whites. Based on the findings, the study will provide recommendations for designing effective recruitment strategies for Hispanic and Non-Hispanic White males and females while accounting for possible generational differences.

Ressetar, Tatyana. "The seaside resort towns of Cape May and Atlantic City, New Jersey development, class consciousness, and the culture of leisure in the mid to late Victorian era." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4826.

Full text
Abstract:
"Victorianism" is a highly controversial, sometimes ironic, term penned by historians throughout various works that has come to hold dramatic weight in both its meaning and its influence. Though the term is usually most closely associated with nineteenth century England, Victorianism was a highly influential movement in American culture simultaneously as well, specifically in the spheres of home, work, and play. Of those, "play," or leisure, is undoubtedly the least explored, especially before the latter decades of the twentieth century. Prior to this period, most literature about the Victorians, with the exception of a few works, only dealt with masculinity, religion, and the rigid dynamic of the nineteenth century household. Recently, historians like James Walvin, Pamela Horn, and Hugh Cunningham have attempted to draw attention to Victorian leisure with excellent works on pastimes and society during the nineteenth century, but they represent only a few. However, many works of this caliber focus on England, the "birthplace" of Victorianism. Thus, this work attempts to emphasize that the cultural phenomenon of Victorianism was just as present in the United States. Despite the recurring themes of the home and the workplace so often chosen by scholars, it is actually within the realm of leisure that the controversial issues of the Victorian period and its people can be best observed. Class, race, and gender were three major components of the Victorian culture that shaped the various forms of leisure and recreation, as well as the specific restrictions on those amusements.; All of these factors had a shared, tremendous influence on the progress (or lack thereof) towards a more modern era and society that occurred at the turn of the twentieth century. In the pages to follow, the numerous contradictions and paradoxes of Victorian leisure in America will be examined, ultimately demonstrating how pastimes and recreation (and their outlets) in the mid to late nineteenth century were neither truly Victorian nor truly progressive, but indeed a combination of both. This creates further irony during this controversial period. However, before exploring these outlets, the term "Victorian" will be examined while placing it into the context of mid to late nineteenth century Americans who belonged to all classes of travelers. It will become apparent that American Victorians had much invested in their values, but were also willing to break the rules regarding certain amusements and pleasures. Moreover, the "democratization" of leisure will be highlighted as the upper and lower classes began to enjoy the same recreations. Marked innovations of the period will also be discussed, as to highlight their importance on Victorian leisure and its development, which will also be referred to throughout the chapters. These topics will be addressed before examining the specific Victorian leisure culture of two of America's oldest seaside destinations: Cape May and Atlantic City, both in New Jersey. The guests, accommodations and transportation, and offerings at these resort towns will act as a mirror into mid to late nineteenth century culture. There, the contradictory ideals and rules of Victorianism are exhibited as the resorts rose to prominence. The decline of "elite-only" leisure and the rise of the "excursionist" will be examined throughout the progression of the towns' growth and boom periods.; Exploring the ironies of Victorian leisure through the proverbial lens of Cape May and Atlantic City proves effective, as the towns came to represent opposite ends of the "socially acceptable" spectrum after a short period, and were full of similar inconsistencies and paradoxes themselves. Additionally, their current fates remain a product of their polarized Victorian heydays, further proving the influence of seaside resort culture, the late Victorian period, and its ideals on the broader field of American leisure history.

"The effect of responsibility centre budgeting/responsible centre management on the role of academic deans in a public university." Thesis, Lethbridge, Alta. : University of Lethbridge, Faculty of Arts and Science, 2002, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10133/132.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Responsibility Centre Budgeting/Responsibility Centre Management (RCB/RCM) on the role of academic deans in a public university. A model was developed in the study, incorporating the traditional role of deans, the components of a responsibility centre budge, and current management theories. Using this model, a new dimension of the deans' decisional role emerged. The increased decision-making is characterized and bound by issues of autonomy, accountability, communication, and contingent factors. The research implies that the deans studied in this particular RCB/RCM system carry out roles similar to those of general managers in the for-profit sector. An implication for academics holding this expanded role is that knowledge and/or training in RCB/RCM systems is required. Additionally, workload generated by this type of system, and the accountability it imparts on deans, necessitates the assistance of individuals trained in budget preparation.

Abstract:
Skövde Kulturhus is a cultural centre in Skövde that have been remodelled to incorporate new areas and to improve the old ones. The centre has different locals where different activities can be performed such as watching movies and theatre plays, dance, etc. In the art gallery, one of the new areas is the workshop, and for this, new furniture is needed. During the project, a set of a table and chairs have been developed for the workshop, following some specifications, set by the personnel of the Cultural Centre and by the conclusion from the different investigations. This report covers the whole process from the different researches to the evaluation and the development of the final concepts; it follows a modification of the Cyclic Strategy Method process, which includes the research and different design tools to create the concepts, as morphological chart, braindrawing and a study of the form. User studies have been made to get a good understanding of the way a person uses this furniture using surveys; ergonomics research has been made to design furniture for all kind of people; and market research have been made to discovered what kind of furniture is usually used. All these researches have been investigated to create the optimal table and chair for the activities done at the Centre. The final solutions, which have been evaluated against other concepts, are a wooden table, whose design and modular form permits to join other tables to work in teams; and a wooden chair, which have been designed for different people size. Both would fulfil the requirements and fit in the new cultural centre.

Van, Aswegen Sonja-Mariè. "An analysis of learner-centredness within teacher education institutions : case study / Sonja-Mariè van Aswegen." Thesis, North-West University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/49.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past few years many changes have taken place in the content and presentation of teacher education programmes in South Africa due to the paradigm shift from teaching to learning. As a result, the primary learning environment for undergraduate students, the fairly passive lecture-discussion format where teacher educators talk and most students listen, is contrary to almost every principle of an optimal student learning setting. The current view in teacher education is that teacher educators should create learner-centred and learner-controlled environments where student learning and success determine the boundary. The idea of focusing on learning rather than teaching requires that teacher educators rethink their role and the role of students in the teaching and learning process. When focussing on learning rather than teaching, teacher educators must challenge their basic assumptions about how people learn and what the roles of teacher educators should be. It may be necessary to unlearn previously acquired teaching habits, and rethink the role of assessment and feedback in learning. Meaningful, formative assessment can play a key role in shifting to a learner-centred approach because it provides important information to both students and teacher educators at all stages of the learning process. To achieve this, it is essential that teacher educators do not simply add assessment as an extra to an existing, non-interactive scheme of work, but that they integrate assessment effectively and efficiently with their instruction. This requires a major shift in how assessment is planned and integrated and a working framework for integrating assessment with instruction can be most valuable to teacher educators. The purpose of this study was to: Determine the nature and scope of ESL teacher educators' tasks, within a Faculty of Education Sciences, at a tertiary institution. Determine the extent to which ESL teacher educators are implementing a learner-centred approach to teaching and learning. Identify the factors, if any, that impede the transition to a learner-centred approach to teaching and learning. Provide recommendations to facilitate the implementation of a learner-centred approach to teaching and learning. Determine how, when and how often ESL teacher educators are currently conducting assessment. Identify possible shortcomings of the existing assessment system of ESL teacher educators. Provide a framework for implementing assessment within a learner-centred approach to teaching and learning. A one-shot cross-sectional survey design was used in this study. The participants included all the teacher educators (N=5) within the Subject Group English in the Faculty of Education Sciences .at the Potchefstroom University. Three data collection techniques were used in this study, namely a questionnaire, semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. The purpose was to triangulate the data in order to get as complete a picture as possible of the extent to which the teacher educators' teaching and learning ~racticesre flected a focus on learner-centredness. The results of the study can be summarised as follows: Descriptive statistics (means and percentages) were used to analyse the data. The data collected during the interviews were reported as narratives. The results indicated that the teacher educators in this study spent a significant percentage of their time on preparation for class meetings and assessment. Each teacher educator taught for the full twelve weeks of each semester and, therefore, did not have one week free of teaching the entire year. Although the teacher educators embraced some learner-centred methods such as group work and interactive class discussions, they still assumed most of the responsibility for the learning processes and classroom behaviour of the students. They mainly focused on what to present in the contact sessions and spent time organizing presentations of information rather than developing materials to facilitate learning. The teacher educators often reverted to more familiar, traditional approaches and emphasized the following issues as affecting the effective and efficient transition to learner-centredness: curriculum coverage and lack of time, lack of proper training, size of student groups, other teacher educators' cynical attitudes and students' attitudes towards learning. The teacher educators made use of a variety of assessment methods and assessed students continuously, but these assessments were not used for promoting student learning, but rather for grading purposes. Students received traditional feedback such as grades, marks and scores, but they seldom received feedback on what they did wrong and how they could rectify it. Overall, it was assessment of learning and not assessment for learning. A major factor impeding the implementation of a learner-centred assessment approach was the demand formative assessment methods placed on the professional time of the teacher educators. In order to utilise time effectively and integrate assessment with the instructional design, teacher educators expressed the need for a workable framework to assist them in planning their assessment practices.

Wilkinson, Mark. "Exploration into the strategic role of designers and academics in shaping collaborative new product development across supply chains : towards a new methodology." Thesis, University of East London, 2000. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/685/.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation starts from the hypothesis that a new approach to new product development is required to meet the future requirements and expectations of customers and consumers and product and service providers. The investigation focuses upon domestic food refrigeration and its position within the retail food supply chain, with the domestic refrigerator as an example of a mature product, the future development of which, it is argued, may depend upon a new approach to new product development. A review of established and emerging new product development strategies suggests that such future requirements might be met through collaboration between organisations from different industrial sectors and across supply chains, and that existing strategies would not support such collaborations. A new methodology, Collaborative Envisioning is proposed which engages the business of academia and the tools of the designer to facilitate multidisciplinary trans-sectoral collaboration. It is further proposed that a demonstration project, Beyond the Fridge, is the most effective test for the methodology. Key participants in Beyond the Fridge are Sainsbury's, Electrolux, 3M, University College Northampton and University of East London. Results from Beyond the Fridge suggest that the Collaborative Envisioning methodology is effective in bringing together partners from different industrial sectors and uniting them around a shared and mutually supported vision of future business. However, the low start-up cost and high level of concept realisation inherent in the methodology have led to some overestimation of the tactical deliverables from an essentially strategic process. In the light of Beyond the Fridge it is recommended that structures are established at the initiation of a Collaborative Envisioning project so that tactical solutions which may be derived from the strategic objective are differentiated and separately funded from the core project. The reflection upon Beyond the Fridge, and the recommendations for future work derived from it, is followed by reviews of evolving consumer demographics and perceptions of food storage and preparation in the home, and recent initiatives to integrate new technologies into domestic and personal products, thus establishing the historical and social context for Beyond the Fridge.

Globally higher education is situated in a supercomplex world (Barnett, 2000) that is constantly in a state of flux and subject to multiple pressures. This situation has been exacerbated in South African higher education that has been characterised by student protests in the last two years (2015–2016). One of the major causes for the recents protests, particularly in our institutional context, has been students’ anger that despite the official demise of apartheid and the end of colonial rule, some universities in South Africa are still attempting to be copies of Oxford and Harvard.

Smith, Tiffany. "Applying Current Methods for Estimating Influenza Burden to an Academic Health Sciences Centre." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/23197.

Full text
Abstract:
Public health planning for influenza is based on morbidity and mortality estimates derived from statistical models. Lower than anticipated 2009 H1N1 pandemic death estimates have raised questions about the method. Examining the statistical method is important for future policy and program development. We compared the main methods of estimating influenza burden through a systematic literature review and by comparing statistical estimates of influenza-attributable burden at the Ottawa Hospital (TOH) to clinical estimates validated through chart review. We identified heterogeneity in methods used to estimate influenza-attributable mortality in the literature which resulted in within-season estimate variation by study. We found statistical estimates of influenza burden at TOH to be 4-8 times greater than clinically validated data. We also found no significant association between the outcomes examined and epidemic periods at TOH. The findings of this study suggest discordance between model estimates by model approach and between model estimates and validated findings. Examining reasons for these discordances should be pursued.

Abstract:
Pushing a trolley along the lines of a supermaket. Weighing alone fruits and vegetables. Having a choice between various brands for a given item. These are actions that we do daily, almost automatically. However this has not been always the case and it is quite surprising to see how the behaviour of french people has changed. This work is aimed at studying the connection which has grown between law and department stores. The core of the present work lays in the process of creation of a shopping center. This critical center of our consumerist society is a subject for various discussions, either juridical or political as well as economical. This research work enables an appreciation of the present condition of the law applied today to department stores.Beyond the interest of this work for anyone liking to know more about the opérations of a shopping center, this study enables also to analyse subsidiarily the many changes affecting the political decisions, vis a vis an economical giant, built by the shadowy actors of the department stores. In some cases being helped by law makers, in other cases being slowed down the exorbitant growth of the number of shopping center is a fact which led to a lot of writings.Behind this fact are hidden various important stakes such as desertification of town centers, extinction of local producers, world wide operations, or the level of the buying power of french people

Abstract:
The thesis concerns the origins, creation and progress of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Most scholars believe that development assistance is largely motivated by self-interest. At first glance, the Centre appears to be an anomaly in Canadian foreign aid. The IDRC's disbursements are not formally tied, has an international board of governors, and its structure was specifically designed with autonomy in mind. This Canadian federal organisation has spent one and a half billion dollars are funded over 5,500 projects since its founding in 1970. During this time, the Centre has disbursed between 70-95% of its programme funds overseas, mostly to developing country university researchers. These researchers have designed and executed research intended to help developing countries alleviate poverty, social decay and more recently, environmental challenges.
A detailed archeology is conducted of Pearson's own internationalism regarding science and technology, foreign policy, development assistance, environment and culture. Our analysis shows how Pearson's thinking, and that of colleagues who were to have key influences on the Centre, Barbara Ward and Maurice Strong, were embedded in deeply held beliefs and values. We identify a tension between an internationalist impulses and Canadian-centered or parochial pre-occupations common in most of the federal public service, especially central agencies. Central agents, responding to pressures from academics, and the internal values and beliefs that tend to form in these secretaria, have sought to make the IDRC conform to their own expectations. The author concludes that the Centre has survived and prospered, despite these pressures, partly because of the skill of its top officers, but principally because of the IDRC's capacity to lay claim to being an expression of internationalism.
We also show how another dialectic, between more socially-oriented perspectives and more technical ones affected the development of the IDRC. The thesis suggests that the two dialectics, the internationalist and parochial, and the technical and social, are both synthesising into, respectively, interdependence and holism.

Adutwum-Ofosu, Kevin Kofi. "Eminentia thalami : a potential organizing centre in forebrain development?" Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/16247.

Full text
Abstract:
The initial induction and subsequent patterning of the central nervous system (CNS) are both mediated by morphogenetic signals emanating from some transient cell populations referred to as signalling or organizing centres. Following induction of the CNS, global signals mediate the establishment of its gross mediolateral and anteroposterior axes at gastrulation and early neural plate stages. Subsequent to this, local signals refine these specifications. Local signalling centres usually lie at boundaries of the tissues they pattern. Also, they are rich sources of morphogens, and are capable of ectopically inducing cell fate changes in adjacent tissues when transplanted. The eminentia thalami (EmT) forms a boundary between the diencephalon and telencephalon during embryonic forebrain development. In amphibians and fishes, the EmT continues to be a prominent structure in the postnatal diencephalon though its role in these is still largely unknown. However, in mammals, it appears transient, being identifiable between embryonic days 11 (E11) and 17 (E17) in the mouse, but not discernible at other ages. Though its function is yet to be determined, available experimental evidence suggests that it might act as a signalling centre in forebrain patterning. Therefore, this study aimed at identifying in the EmT members of the Wnt, Fgf and Bmp families of morphogens implicated in patterning elsewhere, and their spatial and temporal patterns of expression; and also determining whether the EmT is able to induce ectopically cell fate changes in adjacent tissues when transplanted. To address the first aim, Reverse-transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RTPCR) and In Situ Hybridization were used to determine the spatial and temporal expression of some members of the Wnt, Fgf and Bmp signalling systems in the EmT in both wild-type mice and Pax6 (Sey/Sey) mutants. The results indicate nested expression of some Wnts, Fgfs and Bmps mRNA in the ventricular zone of the wildtype EmT till E14.5, after which they appear down-regulated. Also, Wnt7b and Wnt8b show the strongest expression at these ages and this may indicate a key role for these genes in the function of the EmT in mammals. In Sey/Sey mutants, the EmT was malformed as shown by the mis-expression of its markers. Additionally, the Wnt, Fgf and Bmp genes normally expressed in the wild-type EmT were either not expressed in the mutant or were mis-expressed. The second aim was addressed by transplanting the EmT into the ventral telencephalon, and using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization to analyse for the expression in the ventral telencephalon of Lef1, a transcriptional activator in the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway, which is not expressed here, as well as Foxg1, Mash1 and Islet1, three transcription factors normally expressed here. EmT explants induced ectopically Lef1 expression in the ventral telencephalon. Also, while the Lef1-expressing ventral telencephalic cells did express Foxg1, a telencephalic marker, they either did not express or sparsely expressed Mash1 and Islet1, which are specific markers of the ventral telencephalon. These results suggest that the EmT may possess some ability to induce cell fate changes in the ventral telencephalon. The role of Wnt/β-catenin signalling in the function of the EmT was also investigated by analysing Lef1, Foxg1 and Mash1 expression in the ventral telencephalon of cultured E13.5 brains in which Wnt signalling had been activated in the ventral telencephalon through small molecule inhibition of GSK3β, a member of the β- catenin destruction complex. Lef1 expression in the ventral telencephalon increased with an increased inhibition of GSK3β activity. Also, while Foxg1 was expressed normally in the ventral telencephalon irrespective of the level of GSK3β inhibition, there was a significant dose-dependent reduction in Mash1 expression here. These results show that up-regulation of Wnt signalling in the ventral telencephalon may result in cell fate changes here, and also suggest that ventral telencephalic cells are competent to respond to Wnt signalling at this stage of development.

Abstract:
Although human beings continuously learn through their experiences and impressions, the most important years in determining all actions and decisions which will be made in life, are during childhood. In designing spaces for children, their perception of the built environment and interaction with their surroundings needs to be understood in terms of the influence that elements of architecture and the landscape have on their sensorial and motoric actions as well as social activities. FEEL + LEARN + HEAL, the subject of this dissertation, is a centre for childhood development and an ambulatory clinic, which will demonstrate how built environments enhance perceptual experience by means of sensory stimulation and healing environments. The study area is located on the urban edge, north east of Pretoria's Central Business District and forms a gateway into the city at a large intersection, where Boom, Soutpansberg, Dr. Savage and du Toit Street intersect.

Smith, Leonard Cowper. "The effect of selected academic development programmes on the academic performance of academic development students at a South African university : an empirical study." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/11803.

Abstract:

The case studies that make up this thesis cover the three largest academic development programmes at the University of Cape Town. A variety of statistical methods are used to estimate the effect of educational interventions in selected first- and second-year academic development courses on the academic performance of academic development students in these courses and through to graduation, relative to mainstream students. In general, research in this area in South Africa and internationally has been characterised by small sample sizes and a lack of statistical rigour. Few studies control for the range of independent variables that can affect students’ academic performance, in addition to the academic development programme or course, and the great majority ignore the sampleselection problem that arises in the selection of students for academic development and mainstream programmes. The theoretical rationale underpinning this thesis is informed by the postpositivist and evidence-based approaches to empirical investigation. Demographic, academic and other data for some 9000 students for the years 1999?2005 was obtained from the university’s data base and academic departments. Statistical techniques including multivariate analysis and propensity score matching are used in an attempt to finesse the problems associated with the use of non-experimental data as students are selected into different courses and programmes.

Full text
Abstract:
This research focuses on the academic programs at the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm (the Farm). The Farm is a centre for sustainability learning and research, providing a working model of sustainable food systems with which to engage students, faculty and community. The Farm is situated within the global context of a dominant industrial food paradigm that is demonstrated to be a major contributor to the social and ecological crises the world now faces. The Farm is further situated within the context of a dominant education paradigm that provides most students with knowledge that is disconnected from social and ecological realities, leading to the misuse of knowledge and to the exacerbation of global crises. The purpose of this research is to explore the contributions that the Farm’s academic programs provide toward advancing sustainability learning from the perspective of program participants, including myself. The research methodology was guided by participatory approaches to research. Qualitative methods were employed, focusing primarily on surveys and semi-structured interviews with program participants. I have also been an involved participant in a diversity of programs at the Farm from April 2004 – December 2008. The results of the research suggest that program participants value the ability to engage with their subject matter, not only on an abstract/theoretical level, but also on practical and affective levels. Participants feel that UBC is lacking in programs that allow students to engage physically and emotionally with their learning. Students feel their knowledge will be better recalled and more likely to be useful if they care about what they are learning, if they can engage with it in a real world context, and if they have some ownership and responsibility for what they are learning. Further, program participants feel that the Farm’s academic programs would benefit from providing more theoretical context and connection to their other academic work, from additions and improvements to Farm infrastructure and resources, and from additional human resources support. This research project was site specific. Nevertheless, it connects with and complements work being done at dozens of universities, colleges and student farms around the world.

Abstract:
This paper reports a study that examined the pedagogical knowledge (knowledge and beliefs related to the act of teaching) of two more successful and two less successful adult ESL instructors during planning teaching and post teaching reflection. The verbal reports of their teaching were compared to previous studies (Gatbonton, 2000, 2008; Mullock, 2006) that used stimulated recall to categorize adult ESL instructors' pedagogical thoughts during their instruction. The comparison showed that the previous categories were inadequate to cover the data. Additional codes were added in order to codify all the data after which patterns and themes emerged that overarched the previous categories. The five pattern themes among the four participants included academic focus, comprehension, engagement, language management, and student centered. The two more successful teachers each had one specific pattern theme whose fundamental focus was on student learning. These themes dominated the more successful teachers' pedagogical foci while the other four themes were subservient to that dominant theme. Like the more successful teachers all five pattern themes were present in the planning and reflection of the less successful teachers. However, the protocols of the less successful Adult ESL teachers did not exhibit a central theme or pedagogical focus that orchestrated and directed the movement of their pedagogical thoughts among the remaining pattern themes. This lack of a dominant theme meant that the pedagogical foci of these teachers moved from one theme to another without a consistent orientation toward a central goal. The conflicted or divided nature of the pedagogical thinking of these less successful teachers may contribute to the reduction in the learning of students in their classes.

Abstract:
Even in the conditions of the digital economy, financial centers remain crucial in the architecture of globalization, as international financial system has reached levels of complexity that requires the existence of a cross-border network of financial centers. After China's accession to the World Trade Organization, the country has gradually become a superpower in the world economy and is becoming one in the realm of global finance. In this context, Chinese cities are increasingly embedded into global systems of production, capital flows and accumulation. However, the ascent of China has not inspired a sufficient attention of financial geographers or other social scientists to the topic of China's financial centers. The objective of this thesis is to map and account for the recent development of financial centers in Mainland China, with specific focus on Shanghai, through the lens of financial geography. Given the centrality of money and finance to market economy as well as China's particular history and geography, this thesis provides an interrogation of the wider social, political, institutional, technological and cultural context for financial center development in China, ranging from the geographies of banking and securities industry in Mainland China to Shanghai's IFC dynamics and its strategic development initiatives. In doing so, this work tests and exemplifies the validity of a number of western theoretical approaches to financial and economic geography. The empirical study of geography of financial centers in Mainland, reveals the characteristics of China's transition economy and the crucial role of different levels of government in producing and shaping the evolution of its financial centers. It also highlights Beijing's critical role in the domestic hierarchical networks in both banking and the securities industry. In addition, the case of Shanghai shows specific characteristics of this international financial center in terms of its history, politics, culture and the developmental model. More specifically, this thesis presents the dynamics of Shanghai as an emerging international financial center formation with Chinese characteristics that goes beyond thinking centred on Anglo-American literature. In summary, the thesis as a whole may be considered as a bridge between western countries and China in terms of financial geographies focusing on the study of financial center evolution.

Lennox-Chhugani, Niamh. "Power and the construction of organisational identity : creating the United Kingdom's first Academic Health Sciences Centre." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/6991.

Full text
Abstract:
This study contributes to our understanding of the reproduction and transformation of organisational identity as it takes place in the context of individual and collective agency and relations of power within the organisation. Organisational identity is socially constructed and continuously reproduced and transformed discursively and non-discursively (Sveningsson and Alvesson, 2003; Czarniawska-Joerges, 2004; Corley et al, 2006) and is rarely as unitary as it appears (Humphreys and Brown, 2002; Foreman and Whetten, 2002). This study asks how power relations influence the construction of organisational identity in the context of multiple identity discourses and how this construction in turn reproduces and transforms power relations in an organisation. I use a reflexive methodology to analyse the empirical data collected during a longitudinal study in which 87 organisational members from all levels of the organisation were interviewed, organisational practices were observed and 83 organisational documents were analysed. This reflexive methodology employs qualitative and inductive methods to obtain and analyse rich situated empirical material. The longitudinal design of the study enables detailed examination of the dynamic processes underlying organisational identity construction over time. The study contributes to our understanding of the construction of organisational identity as an effect of power relations and a medium through which power relations are themselves transformed and reproduced. Firstly, the study contributes to our understanding how multiple organisational identities emerge as a single dominant identity discourse. It identifies processes of strategic ambiguity and inter-discursive recontextualisation strategies such as colonisation and translation which provide the creative space for constructing organisational identity. Secondly, it adds to current theorisation of multiple organisational identity dynamics by analysing these in the context of power relations. Using this analytical lens, organisational identity is seen as the medium through which power relations are reproduced and transformed as well as an outcome of the exercise of power. “Who we are” as an organisation determines which professional and other social groups are considered to be enunciate the identity discourses which 'fit' best and these groups in turn exercise power episodically to reproduce this dominant identity discourse. The final contribution adds to our understanding of how other social identities such as professional identities interact with each other in a healthcare context and with a desired future identity to transform and reproduce power relations between different groups within a complex professionally dominated organisation.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 108-113.
The study investigates the problem of recidivism amongst male trial-awaiting youth detained at Bosasa's Dyambu Youth Centre (DYC), to determine whether their experiences with the variables under investigation have in any way influenced them to consider changes in their attitudes towards criminal behaviour. The research design in this study followed both quantitative and qualitative methodological orientations .An interview schedule was constructed in advance and applied in a standardised manner and was administered by the researcher, face to face with each respondent. Data were analysed and presented both quantitatively and qualitatively. Findings in this study revealed that financial gain, drug addiction and peer pressure were the major driving forces and motivating factors that influenced the respondents to become repeatedly involved in criminal behaviour. Lack of a stable source of income, denial of re-admission at school, rejection by family and friends and lack of stable home and accommodation were some of the major factors that made reintegration into the community difficult for the respondents during the period after their previous release. The findings in this study point to inadequacy of services with regard to prevention of crime and recidivism amongst juvenile offenders. Re-integration and after-care services were identified as an area that is grossly neglected in the field of probation and in social work services generally. Nearly all the respondents reported that they would like to abandon their criminal lifestyle but the situations that they face and various other factors highlighted in the study drive them to crime. The predominant factors identified by the respondents as influential in encouraging abandonment of criminal activities include: a fear of heavy criminal record, disgracing the family, the acquisition of various skills and knowledge from DYC workshops and classes; and their own individual thinking.

Abstract:
Published Article
The need for a state of the art advanced National Casting Technology Centre (NCTC) has been widely supported throughout industry and recognised as an important facilitator in the growth of the foundry industry. This initiative also aligns itself with the government's Advanced Manufacturing Technology Strategy (AMTS), which is an implementation strategy in support of the South African government's Integrated Manufacturing Strategy (IMS) and National R&D Strategy (NRDS). The AMTS aims at supporting and developing the downstream high technology manufacturing industry, inter alia through the aerospace, automotive and metals sectors.
In light of the above and in an effort to retain and expand the current national skills, expertise and facilities in advanced casting technologies, the National Product Development Centre at the CSIR has initiated a process of establishing a National Casting Technology Centre (NCTC). The establishment of the NCTC provides a supportive technology platform for the Advanced Metals Initiative (AMI), which was launched in 2003.
The primary objective of the NCTC is to preserve and expand the national expertise and capabilities in cast metals manufacturing by supporting the local casting industry with process development, technology transfer and skills enhancement in order to increase their global competitiveness.

Abstract:
With our ever increasing global population it will be necessary for dense urban environments to develop methods of farming locally. Not only will urban agriculture be beneficial in aiding in the solution of this growing populations need for food production, but it can help to reconnect us to our food and their processes. This dissertation explores the education and reconnection of the public with the food production cycle through the experience of building integrated agriculture, vermiculture and aquaponic systems (cultivating plants and fish symbiotically). Pretoria’s Apies River is an ideal location for the establishment of a research facility of urban ecosystemic food production. The proposed urban agriculture program will allow for hands on research and development of emerging methods and technologies related to farming in the city environment while providing a platform for public education through interaction&inspiration.
