Rama, Parbavati. "A forgotten diaspora : forced Indian Migration to the Cape Colony, 1658 to 1834." University of the Western Cape, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4758.
Full textThis thesis aims to explore Indian forced migration to the Cape Colony from 1658 to 1834. The forgotten diaspora‘ of its title refers to the first Indians who had come to the shores of South Africa, long before the arrival—between 1860 and 1911—of the indentured Indians. This diaspora has been forgotten, partially because these migrants came as slaves. The author uses data extracted from the newly transcribed Master of the Orphan Chamber (MOOC) series and slave transfers which are housed in the Western Cape Provincial Archives and Records Service (WCARS). The Cape colonial data is considered among the best in the world. Earlier historians such as Victor de Kock, Anna Böeseken, Frank Bradlow and Margaret Cairns, have made us aware of their existence primarily through Transportenkennis and Schepenkennis (transport and shipping information) documents in the Deeds Registry. Not nearly enough, however, is known about these Indian slaves, especially about those who arrived between 1731 and 1834. These lacunae include the number of arrivals; their sex ratios; ages and origins; and the circumstances under which they came. This thesis aims to construct a census of Indian slaves brought to the Cape from 1658 to 1834—along the lines of Philip Curtin's aggregated census of the Trans- Atlantic slave trade, but based on individual case level data coded directly from primary sources. This is the first time the size of the creole population born at the Cape will be established.
Leonard, Niall Edwin. "Hexameron rustique de François de la Mothe le Vayer : édition critique." Paris 10, 1986. http://www.theses.fr/1986PA100162.
Full textThe hexameron rustique, ou les six journées passées à la campagne entre des personnes studieuses was the last work of François de la Mothe le Vayer (1588-1672), member of the académie française, tutor to the young louis the fourteenth, and one of the most prominent of that small group of seventeenth century intellectuals known as "libertins erudits" (cf R. Pintard, le libertinage érudit, Paris, 1943). The social position of its author did not prevent the hexameron rustique from being placed on the index of banned books, soon after its publication in 1670: it is notably absent from the subsequent editions of la Mothe le Vayer's oeuvres. The only modern edition dates from 1875 and is entirely without annotation. The text consists of a series of six dialogues "in the style of the ancients", on topics ranging from the errors of translators to St Augustine's views on human reproduction in Eden. There is a survey of customs relating to the genital organs, an energetic attack on J. L. Guez de Balzac, a discussion of popular superstition and the cult of the saints, and a symbolic, and distinctly risque interpretation of the cave of the nymphs of the odyssey. The text reproduced is that of the first edition. The introductory essay considers the form and sources of the hexameron rustique, with particular emphasis on the influence of Montaigne’s essay "sur des vers de Virgile", before examining the content of each dialogue and the significance of the text as a whole. La Mothe le Vayer's copious learning, reflected in frequent quotations from writers ancient and modern, has necessitated the provision of footnotes equally copious

Full textMy thesis proposes a method of identification of the power, a creation of abstract tools to this end, an critical evaluation of the diversity of the forms of expression of the power and a proposition of measures in order to solved power problems within the framework of a materialistic deleuzo-guattarian political philosophy. Our subject is divided at four moments: the first one is a critical moment of identification of the configuration of the scientifico-political power and the definition of the task of the political philosophy towards him since an at first abstract analysis then the put in perspective of this one by a concrete analysis of the contemporary historic and political processes. The second moment consists in establishing a theory of including political philosophy with regard to all the existing critical approaches. In the third moment, it is a question at first of proposing a contents in the political theory by the presentation of concrete operators of analysis and then to legitimize the position of the political deleuzo-guattarian philosophy in the contemporary field. Finally, according to the materialistic perspective applied to the field of the political philosophy, we formulate concrete proposals for the establishment of a lasting peace by investing the contemporary political legal and strategic field. The objective is to offer a key for understanding contemporary politics by the critical approach guaranteeing a knowledge of the desirous processes presiding over the most viable and livable possible forms of order of the social organizations. We propose strategies to reach these goals
