Abstract:
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has a high incidence and low survival rate, necessitating the identification of novel specific biomarkers. Centromere-associated proteins (CENPs) have been reported to be biomarkers for many cancers, but their roles in ESCC have seldom been investigated. Here, the potential clinical roles of CENPs in ESCC patients were demonstrated by a systematic bioinformatics analysis. Most CENP-encoding genes were differentially expressed between tumor and normal tissues. CENPA, CENPE, CENPF, CENPI, CENPM, CENPN, CENPQ, and CENPR were upregulated universally in the three datasets. Survival analysis demonstrated that high expression of CENPE and CENPQ was positively correlated with the outcomes of ESCC patients. The CENPE-based forecast model was more accurate than the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging-based model, which was classified as stage I/II vs. III/IV. More importantly, the forecast model based on the commonly upregulated CENPs exhibited a much higher area under the curve (AUC) value (0.855) than the currently known TTL, ZNF750, AC016205.1, and BOLA3 biomarkers. The nomogram model integrating the CENPs, TNM stage, and sex was highly accurate in the prognosis of ESCC patients ( AUC = 0.906 ). Besides, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) demonstrated that CENPE expression is significantly correlated with cell cycle, G2/M checkpoint, mitotic spindle, p53, etc. Finally, in validation experiments, we also found that CENPE and CENPQ were significantly overexpressed in esophageal cancer cells. Taken together, these results clearly suggest that CENPs are clinically promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for ESCC patients.

Abstract:
Centromere proteins (CENPs) are the main constituent proteins of kinetochore, which are essential for cell division. In recent years, several studies have revealed that several CENPs were aberrantly expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, numerous centromere proteins have not been studied in HCC. In this study, we used databases of Oncomine, Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA), the Kaplan-Meier Plotter, cBioPortal, the Human Protein Atlas (HPA), and TIMER (Tumor Immune Estimation Resource) and immunohistochemical staining of clinical specimens to investigate the expression of 15 major centromere proteins in HCC to evaluate their potential prognostic value. We found that the mRNA levels of 4 out of 15 centromere proteins (CENPL, CENPQ, CENPR, and CENPU) were significantly higher in HCC than in normal tissues, and their mRNA levels were associated with the tumor stages ( p values < 0.01). Patients with higher mRNA levels of CENPL had poorer overall survival, progression-free survival, relapse-free survival, and disease-specific survival ( p values < 0.05). Furthermore, the higher levels of CENPL mRNA were associated with worse overall survival in males without hepatitis virus infection ( p values < 0.05). The protein expression level of CENPL in human HCC tissue was higher than that in normal liver tissue. In addition, the expression of CENPL was positively correlated with the levels of the tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes. The results suggest that the high mRNA expression of CENPL may be a potential predictor of prognosis in HCC patients.

Abstract:
Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (CeNPs) are potent antioxidants that are being explored as potential therapies for diseases in which oxidative stress plays an important pathological role. However, both beneficial and toxic effects of CeNPs have been reported, and the method of synthesis as well as physico-chemical, biological, and environmental factors can impact the ultimate biological effects of CeNPs. In the present study, we explored the effect of different ratios of citric acid (CA) and EDTA (CA/EDTA), which are used as stabilizers during synthesis of CeNPs, on the antioxidant enzyme-mimetic and biological activity of the CeNPs. We separated the CeNPs into supernatant and pellet fractions and used commercially available enzymatic assays to measure the catalase-, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-, and oxidase-mimetic activity of each fraction. We tested the effects of these CeNPs in a mouse hippocampal brain slice model of ischemia to induce oxidative stress where the fluorescence indicator SYTOX green was used to assess cell death. Our results demonstrate that CeNPs stabilized with various ratios of CA/EDTA display different enzyme-mimetic activities. CeNPs with intermediate CA/EDTA stabilization ratios demonstrated greater neuroprotection in ischemic mouse brain slices, and the neuroprotective activity resides in the pellet fraction of the CeNPs. The neuroprotective effects of CeNPs stabilized with equal proportions of CA/EDTA (50/50) were also demonstrated in two other models of ischemia/reperfusion in mice and rats. Thus, CeNPs merit further development as a neuroprotective therapy for use in diseases associated with oxidative stress in the nervous system.

Abstract:
Chemo fog is one of the most serious health concerns encountered by cancer survivors receiving doxorubicin (DOX)-based chemotherapy. Oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, apoptosis and impairment of synaptic plasticity are regarded as the key factors implicated in DOX-induced cognitive impairment. This research aimed to assess the possible neuroprotective effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) against DOX-induced neurotoxicity. Forty-eight rats were divided into four groups (12 rats/group): control group, CeNPs group (received oral CeNPs solution (35 mg/kg) daily for 4 weeks), and DOX group (were administered DOX intraperitoneally (2 mg/kg, once/week for 4 weeks)) and DOX+ CeNPs group. The findings revealed that CeNPs mitigated behavioral alterations in DOX-induced cognitive deficit. Additionally, CeNPs alleviated the histopathological abnormalities in hippocampus and ameliorated DOX-induced neuroinflammation by downregulating the expression of NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-1β and IL6. In addition, CeNPs antagonized the apoptosis through reducing the protein expression of cytochrome c and caspase 3. In addition, it stimulated the antioxidant defense, as indicated by upregulating the expression of the Nrf2, HO-1 and PGC-1α genes. CeNPs improved synaptic plasticity via acting on the BDNF. These actions were related through the modification of SIRT-1 expression. Based on the aforementioned results, CeNPs antagonized the doxorubicin-induced neurodegeneration by its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects, alongside its SIRT-1 mediated mechanisms.

Abstract:
Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the antioxidant activity of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) against paraquat (PQ)-induced liver injury in rats. Methods: Thirty-two male rats were divided into four 8-member groups and treated intraperitoneally with PQ and/or CeNPs for 14 days. Group 1 received PQ (5 mg/kg/d), group 2 received CeNPs (15, 30, and 60 mg/kg/d), group 3 received a combination of PQ (5 mg/kg/d) and CeNPs (15, 30, and 60 mg/kg/d), and group 4 (control group) received saline solution. Serum samples along with liver tissue samples were collected from all the rats. Oxidative stress (OS) biomarkers including total antioxidant capacity, lipid peroxidation, total thiol groups, DNA damage, and nitric oxide levels were determined. Histological samples were also analyzed using hematoxylin and eosin staining slides. Results: Levels of oxidative stress and hepatic tissue damage were significantly higher in the PQ group compared to the control group. CeNPs at a dose of 15 mg/kg showed the antioxidant activity and compromised the PQ-induced damage. Conclusion: In the scenario tested in this study, CeNPs could reduce the levels of OS, as well as hepatic damage induced by PQ.

Abstract:
Background: The present study was conducted to investigate the potential protective effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) against lead acetate-induced toxicity. Materials and Methods: In this study, 30 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups and treated simultaneously, except for the normal control, for 5 weeks with lead acetate in drinking water (1000 mg/L). Control rats and negative control rats received saline intraperitoneally. At the same time, the third group was treated with intraperitoneal injections of CeNPs at the dose of 0.5 mg/kg 1 week before lead administration, and continued with its administration. Finally, serum was obtained by the conventional methods and rats were sacrificed to obtain liver, heart, testis, and kidney tissue for histopathological examinations. Results: The lead-treated group showed significant increases in blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine, serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (P<0.01). Lead-intoxicated rats treated with CeNPs showed a significant decrease in serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), AST, and ALT levels compared to the untreated negative control group (P<0.01). The histopathological examination of liver and kidney tissues showed signs of lead-induced injuries, necrotic hepatocytes, and glomerulosclerosis. The CeNPs-treated group showed noticeable reductions in histopathological signs of lead-induced injuries. Lipid peroxidation levels were also lower in CeNPs-treated rats than negative controls (P<0.05). Conclusion: The current experimental study proved the protective effects of CeNPs in rats exposed to chronic lead-induced toxicity; however, more experiments are required to evaluate the possible side effects and interactions.

Abstract:
Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) exhibit antioxidant properties both in vitro and in vivo. This is due to the self-regeneration of their surface, which is based on redox-cycling between 3+ and 4+ states for cerium, in response to their immediate environment. Additionally, oxygen vacancies in the lattice structure allow for alternating between CeO2 and CeO2−x during redox reactions. Research to identify and characterize the biomedical applications of CeNPs has been heavily focused on investigating their use in treating diseases that are characterized by higher levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although the bio-mimetic activities of CeNPs have been extensively studied in vitro, in vivo interactions and associated protein corona formation are not well understood. This review describes: (1) the methods of synthesis for CeNPs, including the recent green synthesis methods that offer enhanced biocompatibility and a need for establishing a reference CeNP material for consistency across studies; (2) their enzyme-mimetic activities, with a focus on their antioxidant activities; and, (3) recent experimental evidence that demonstrates their ROS scavenging abilities and their potential use in personalized medicine.

Abstract:
Fipronil (FIP) is an insecticide commonly used in many fields, such as agriculture, veterinary medicine, and public health, and recently it has been proposed as a potential endocrine disrupter. The purpose of this study was to inspect the reproductive impacts of FIP and the possible protective effects of cerium nanoparticles (CeNPs) on male albino rats. Rats received FIP (5 mg/kg bwt; 1/20 LD50), CeNPs (35 mg/kg bwt) and FIP+CeNPs per os daily for 28 days. Serum testosterone levels, testicular oxidative damage, histopathological and immunohistochemical changes were evaluated. FIP provoked testicular oxidative damage as indicated by decreased serum testosterone (≈60%) and superoxide dismutase (≈50%), glutathione peroxidase activity (≈46.67%) and increased malondialdehyde (≈116.67%) and nitric oxide (≈87.5%) levels in testicular tissues. Furthermore, FIP induced edematous changes and degeneration within the seminiferous tubules, hyperplasia, vacuolations, and apoptosis in the epididymides. In addition, FIP exposure upregulated interleukin-1β (IL-1β), nitric oxide synthase 2 (NOS), caspase-3 (Casp3) and downregulated the Burkitt-cell lymphomas (BCL-2), inhibin B proteins (IBP), and androgen receptor (Ar) mRNA expressions Casp3, nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1(IBA1), and IL-1β immunoreactions were increased. Also, reduction of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), mouse vasa homologue (MVH), and SOX9 protein reactions were reported. Interestingly, CeNPs diminished the harmful impacts of FIP on testicular tissue by decreasing lipid peroxidation, apoptosis and inflammation and increasing the antioxidant activities. The findings reported herein showed that the CeNPs might serve as a supposedly new and efficient protective agent toward reproductive toxicity caused by the FIP insecticide in white male rats.

Abstract:
In this work, a novel material that was based on mesoporous carbon and ceria nanoparticles composite (MC–CeNPs) was synthesized, and a modified electrode was fabricated. When compared with a bare glass electrode, the modified electrode exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards the simultaneous determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC), which is attributed to the large specific area and fast electron transfer ability of MC–CeNPs. Additionally, it exhibited linear response ranges in the concentrations of 0.5–500 µM and 0.4–320 µM for HQ and CC, with detection limits (S/N = 3) of 0.24 µM and 0.13 µM, respectively. This method also displayed good stability and reproducibility. Furthermore, the modified electrode was applied to the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC in tap and lake water samples, and it exhibited satisfactory recovery levels of 98.5–103.2% and 98–103.4% for HQ and CC, respectively. All of these results indicate that a MC–CeNPs modified electrode could be a candidate for the determination of HQ and CC.

Esta pesquisa se vale de dois documentos oficiais referentes ao ensino de Geografia, um estadual e outro federal, respectivamente, a Proposta Curricular para o Ensino de Geografia - 1° Grau e os Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais: Geografia (Terceiro e Quarto Ciclos do Ensino Fundamental), aqui designados Proposta da CENP e PCN. Valendo-se do aporte teórico pós-estruturalista, este estudo teve como objetivo analisar os discursos curriculares de Geografia hegemonizados na Proposta da CENP e nos PCN. Para tanto, e reconhecendo que tais documentos se mostram sobremaneira díspares, investigou-se o contexto histórico-social em que foram produzidos, os atores sociais participantes e a perspectiva teórico-metodológica da ciência geográfica utilizada, sendo estas as categorias analíticas empregadas. O estudo na Proposta da CENP e nos PCN justifica-se por se tratarem de documentos pouco pesquisados na atualidade, assim, retomar o debate e colocá-los em evidência é reconhecer sua importância histórica e social. A Proposta da CENP e os PCN são tratados como currículos, os quais, por sua vez, são compreendidos como discursos. Ancorando-se no pós-estruturalismo, currículo é discurso hegemonizado, temporariamente, sendo passível de transformação e ressignificação, visto que é constituído pela linguagem, e esta retrata a realidade, sendo dinâmica e não linear. Desse modo, o discurso é sempre provisório e inacabado, por isso é inconcebível pensar a Proposta da CENP e os PCN desvinculados do momento histórico em que foram elaborados. Eles são o discurso hegemonizado em um dado período. A Proposta da CENP hegemonizou o materialismo histórico e a dialética, ao passo que os PCN fixaram uma pluralidade teórico-metodológica. Em suma, não se pode elencar qual desses currículos é mais verdadeiro ou representador da realidade. Ambos representaram a realidade em que estavam inseridos, pois os significados nunca são fixos, mas constantemente construídos. Em vista disso, não é possível julgar qual foi o mais importante, tampouco considerar apenas um dos currículos como detentor de saberes universais absolutos.
This research uses two official documents from Geography‟s area, one of them state and the other federal which are respectively Curricular Proposal for the Teaching of Geography - 1st Degree and National Curricular Parameters: Geography (Third and Fourth Cycles of Elementary Education), called here CENP‟s Proposal and PCN. Using the theoretical contributions of the post-structuralist perspective, the goal was analyze Geography‟s curricular discourses which were hegemoniac in CENP‟s Proposal and in the PCN. So that, and recognizing that these documents seem to be too different from each other, the social-historical context which they belong was analyzed, as well as the social agents involved and the theoretical-methodological perspective used by Geographic Science. These elements, mentioned before, constitute the analytical categories used. CENP‟s Proposal and the PCN were chosen as object of analysis in this research because they are not frequently researched nowadays, so recover the discussion as well put them in evidence show their social and historical concernment. These documents are understood here as discourse, and using the post-structuralist perspective it‟s possible to say that curriculum is a discourse which was hegemoniac momentarily, which means it become able to be transformed and get other meanings, once discourse is constituted by the language and it represents the reality, dynamically. This way, discourse is always temporary and unclosed, so it‟s unthinkable to think CENP‟s Proposal and the PCN disassociated from the historical context they belong. They are the hegemoniac discourse in a specific moment. CENP‟s Proposal hegemoniac the historical materialism and the dialectic, while the PCN determined a theoretical-methodological‟s pluralism. So, it‟s impossible to determine which of these curriculums are more true or which of them represent better the reality. Both of them represent the reality they belong because they are not stable, they are built constantly. Therefore, it‟s not possible to say which of them is more important neither consider one of them the only document with total knowledge.

O tema deste estudo refere-se à importância das condições ergonômicas ambientais em Unidades de Alimentação e Nutrição Hospitalares. A presente pesquisa se propôs a analisar as condições ambientais, e as queixas relacionadas ao trabalho dos cozinheiros de quatro instituições hospitalares da cidade de Curitiba, PR, tendo como parâmetro a NR-17. Adotou-se como metodologia a abordagem ergonômica centrada nos métodos: entrevista, observação e medições técnicas. Os dados foram tratados estatisticamente. Com o estudo pode-se concluir que muitas das queixas evidenciadas pelos cozinheiros estão relacionadas às condições ambientais. Os resultados da pesquisa permitiram reflexões que vão ao encontro de novos caminhos, indicando a melhoria das condições de trabalho para esses profissionais. Em síntese, este estudo evidencia algumas recomendações relacionadas à saúde do trabalhador e ao atendimento da legislação vigente.

This paper presents a research in the visual arts, specifically in the field of photography, considering the relationship of art and technology. The poetic research focuses on underwater photography and drawing up fictional scenes. The dissertative text begins with a historical survey in relation to photography and its relationship with art, relying primarily on the means of capturing images by cameras. A survey data is presented since the first attempts and the fact that early experiences with underwater photography. Data in relation to photography as video, are related to evidence that even having a closer relationship with biology, cameras produced to the aquatic environment, they presented as a tool for production of artistic material. Artistic productions working with the issue of underwater photography features or use of this environment are analyzed in their practices. For this dissertation addressed two series of photographs and a video of my research in visual poetics that represent differently, everyday scenes displaced to the aquatic environment. In this series discusses the concept of aesthetics of photography on the action of water, as the visibility, fiction and temporality in photographic images and videos.
Este trabalho apresenta uma pesquisa em artes visuais, especificamente no campo da fotografia, considerando as relações da arte e da tecnologia. A investigação poética concentra-se na fotografia submersa e na elaboração de cenas ficcionais. O texto dissertativo inicia com um levantamento histórico em relação à fotografia e sua relação com a arte, baseando-se inicialmente nos meios de captação de imagens por aparelhos fotográficos. É apresentado um levantamento de dados desde as primeiras tentativas e o início de fato das experiências com a fotografia subaquática. Dados em relação à fotografia, como em vídeo, são relacionados a fim de evidenciar que, mesmo possuindo uma proximidade maior com a área da biologia, aparelhos fotográficos produzidos para o ambiente aquático, foram também usados como ferramenta para produção de material artístico. São analisadas produções artísticas que tratam a questão da fotografia submersa ou que utilizam características deste ambiente em suas práticas. Para esta dissertação são abordadas duas séries de fotografias e uma de vídeos de minha pesquisa em poéticas visuais que representam, de maneira distinta, cenas cotidianas deslocadas para o ambiente aquático. Nestas séries discute-se a noção da estética da fotografia sob a ação da água, no que tange a visibilidade, a ficção e a temporalidade em imagens fotográficas e vídeos.

As cenas poéticas da Marambaia pulsam a condição ontológica desta pesquisa que se desafia por si própria, pela via de escrituras erráticas e cujos fragmentos revelam/refletem a produção de poetas/criadores de uma possível e invisível arte periférica, aqui afirmada dionisiacamente por uma estilística aforismática (Nietzsche) e por uma filosofia rizomática (Deleuze) que ressignificam as leituras dos percursos espontâneos e das vivências dos artistas da Marambaia.

Compreendendo que o letramento é um fenômeno essencialmente social e que os usos da escrita são determinados pelas matrizes socioculturais que as configuram no contexto social, o presente estudo objetiva, através de uma abordagem etnográfica, investigar os usos que se fazem da escrita numa comunidade localizada na periferia da cidade de Teresina, capital do Estado do Piauí, formada a partir da ocupação de uma propriedade particular, para assentamento de famílias sem-teto, minuciosamente planejada por entidades que atuam em movimentos sociais. O trabalho tem como suporte teórico os princípios e postulados que fundamentam os Novos Estudos do Letramento, perspectiva segundo a qual o letramento é concebido como prática social que se processa pela intermediação da palavra escrita e vê a leitura e a escrita não como habilidades individuais, mas como atividades interativas, socialmente situadas e vinculadas a aspectos da cultura e das estruturas de poder nas quais se constituem. Os dados da pesquisa etnográfica revelam que, na comunidade pesquisada, como em qualquer outro espaço social, a escrita é, por natureza, um recurso que se presta a estabelecer e a manter a comunicação entre aqueles que dela lançam mão. Desta função geral, no entanto, observam-se desdobramentos que se conformam às demandas impostas pelo contexto sócio-histórico e é neste contexto que os significados dos atos de ler e de escrever adquirem nuances particulares. As demandas que emergem nos contextos por onde transitam os atores sociais da pesquisa oferecem-lhes oportunidades para que atuem em práticas sociais em instâncias diversas, numa dinâmica interacional que lhes garante a possibilidade de cultivar laços afetivos e sociais, organizar minimamente a casa onde residem e a própria vida pessoal, informar-se e participar ativamente do convívio social. Este trabalho trata da sexualidade e da arquitetura. Através das leituras de Foucault, sobre a sexualidade, e de Bataille, sobre o erotismo, estuda-se a arquitetu-ra e a sexualidade como construções sociais cujas trajetórias se sobrepõem. Assim, o objetivo aqui presente é expressar um retrato bastante amplo destas sobreposi-ções e dar-lhes um sentido atual, sobretudo ao estudar o centro da cidade de Floria-nópolis. A sexualidade é vista como um objeto paradoxal. Trata-se de uma figura his-tórica real caracterizada pela enunciação de discursos como forma de produção de verdade classificatória sobre indivídios, seus desejos e práticas correlatas ao sexo. Este enunciado é produzido num jogo complexo de relações de poder ao longo da história e também se materializa através da arquitetura, conforme cita Foucault, nos espaços de saturação sexual. Porém, antes de constituir-se enquanto razão discur-siva moderna, o erotismo precede a sexualidade como parte de sua natureza ances-tral. A natureza do erotismo relaciona-se aos eventos em torno da transcendência, da vida interior humana, das questões universais que se colocam na apreciação da vida mesmo diante da presença da morte. Nestes eventos, a arquitetura se torna ob-jeto de dispersão, não se configura como exemplar para atos correlatos a práticas ou enunciados, mas como experiência vivida. O aspecto paradoxal da sexualidade e do erotismo reside na incapacidade em se produzir uma verdade plena sem que um se transforme no outro. A sexualidade, mediante os regimes de saturação de condutas, inscreve relações erotizadas de po-der. Da mesma forma, o erotismo se depara, através de seus movimentos oscilantes entre a vida e a morte, com a conciliação, com a chance de encontrar-se com o cole-tivo e estabelecer interdições necessárias à manutenção da ordem e da vida. O sentido atual que se procura alcançar com tais averiguações no âmbito conceitual é a leitura espacial da localidade, uma instância que não se opõe a globa-lidade, mas que se expressa pelo sentido de pertencimento através de realizações originais da arquitetura urbana. Desta forma, também a sexualidade e o erotismo são visitados em suas apreciações locais e o enfoque desta investigação é o centro de Florianópolis. A forma de investigação utiliza-se de um modelo estético, referenciado por Deleuze e Guattari como arte nômade, para designar realizações opostas às institu-cionalizações, opostas a um regime de espaço que se caracteriza como sedentário. Nesta apresentação admitem-se ainda as realizações híbridas situadas entre o ero-tismo - como vertente nômade - e a sexualidade - como enunciação instituída -, vi-venciadas nas formas de apropriação espacial dos sujeitos locais. Visita-se a figura conceitual sujeito entendendo-o como o indivíduo que se contrói mediante processos de subjetivação, seja através do seu assujeitamento a uma realidade institucionalizada, seja através de sua imersão num mundo da auto criação de si. Desta forma, sua eleição de espaços de sexualidade e identidades correlatas torna-se o reflexo deste processo e acompanha a criação da arquitetura. Através do recorrido pela centralidade que concerne ao centro de Florianópo-lis, fez-se o registro de cenas da cidade em momentos diferentes. Estes momentos destacam-se mediante movimentações subjetivas relacionadas ao modelo estético adotado admitindo-se as hibridações de seu significado. Desta forma, o nômade tende a tornar-se sedentário e vice versa. Nesta apreciação de movimentos, a cons-tatação de regimes de tempo para a realização de eventos locais associa-se à cria-ção de corporalidades e espacialidades que se tornaram importantes para avaliar as construções subjetivas nas quais a arquitetura urbana se revela. A materialidade e a fluidez da arquitetura são examinadas a luz deste exercí-cio estético. Ao tomar as construções subjetivas únicas ao local ou reproduzidas se-quencialmente em diversas cidades, a arquitetura se afirma como uma forma de construir através de demandas simbólicas subjetivas. Associa-se o sexo, como um dos elementos desta subjetividade, à demarcação de territórios, mas sempre se ad-mite a possível transitoriedade desta demarcação, sobretuto quando está submetida ao paradoxo que envolve tanto a sexualidade como o erotismo.

Abstract:
The stretch of California Route One (Highway 1) from the City of San Luis Obispo reaching north to the Monterey County line is one of the most scenic drives in the United States. This stretch of highway is a destination in its own right; so much so, the San Luis Obispo North Coast Scenic Byway is federally designated as an All-American Road, the highest scenic designation of any road or highway in the nation. There has been a history for funding the preservation and enhancement of these roads; however, it was removed in 2012. Even with the lack of current funding opportunities, the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) continues to recognize the importance of the corridor in attracting valuable tourism revenue thus commissioning this update and economic analysis. Through the economic analysis it was found that visitor spending in the byway region increased by 23% from over $500 million in 2006 to almost $656 million in 2012. In 2012, visitor spending related associated with scenic recognition and enhancement projects along the corridor was about $217,000 in direct revenue. As a result of research, outreach, and data analysis, this project did find that being scenic does make “cents.”

Abstract:
The timely and efficient movement of chromosomes to the spindle equator during mitosis is a prerequisite for accurate chromosome segregation. Recent work has shown that the majority of chromosomes are able to congress and biorientate almost instantaneously after nuclear envelope breakdown due to their position relative to the forming spindle. However, other mechanisms are required to facilitate the congression of chromosomes, which do not congress in this initial wave. Congression of these remaining chromosomes is mediated by multiple mechanisms including: (1) Kinetochore sliding along the microtubule lattice using the Kinesin-7 CENP-E, and (2) kinetochores biorientating near the pole and congressing through microtubule depolymerisation-coupled movement. Here, we show that the constitutive centromere associated network (CCAN) subunit CENP-Q is required for both mechanisms. CENP-Q is required to recruit CENP-E to kinetochores thus explaining the absence of lateral sliding in CENP-Q depleted cells. Because depletion or inhibition of the CENP-E motor does not affect depolymerisation-coupled pulling, we identify a CENP-E recruitment-independent role for CENP-Q in chromosome congression. Following congression we find that biorientated kinetochore movements require both CENP-Q and CENP-E dependent mechanisms. This suggests that as biorientated kinetochores congress they switch into a mode that requires CENP-E motor activity.

O modo de produção capitalista se transformou ao longo da modernidade, neste período histórico observamos como os processos produtivos passaram de uma organização fordista para uma forma de organização pós-fordista na medida em que o trabalho imaterial ganhava força, tornando-se um fator importante para a concorrência que se inaugura na nova ordem mundial. No entanto, tais transformações não foram capazes de superar antigas questões como a determinação do indivíduo mediante o trabalho, tampouco os processos de alienação decorrentes das atividades produtivas. Tais alterações também não foram capazes de superar as relações travadas entre indivíduos e mercadorias, visto que o fetiche contido nesta não apenas seguiu operando, mas ao longo da modernidade encontrou vários dispositivos técnicos que lhe conferiram maior eficácia, levando o indivíduo a novas relações de consumo e novas formas de se relacionar socialmente mediante a legitimação das mercadorias. No entanto, esta mesma modernidade também foi palco para diversas formas de resistência e conquistas para os trabalhadores que, através de diferentes formas de organizações, produziram alterações significativas nas relações trabalhistas através das lutas por melhores condições de trabalho, remuneração, direitos, entre outros. Encontramos ao longo da modernidade um indivíduo atuante, capaz de se organizar e, apesar de sua ação não haver superado antigas contradições do modelo econômico de produção, entendemos que estes seguem produzindo novas sínteses frente a realidade que lhes é apresentada, produzindo assim movimentos de resistência frente as incessantes tentativas de captura do modelo econômico
Capitalist mode of production has changed throughout modernity and at this historic period we could notice how production processes have moved from an organization Fordist form to another organization called post-Fordist according to the growing immaterial labor, which become an important factor competition to the new international order. However, such transformations have not been able to overcome old issues such as determining the individual through the work, nor the processes of alienation resulting from productive activities. Such changes have not been able to overcome the relationships between individuals and goods waged since the fetish contained in this operating not followed, but over the modernity found several technical devices that gave it more effectively, leading the individual to new consumer relations and new ways of interacting socially through the goods legitimization. However, the same modernity also played many forms of resistance and victories to the workers, who have produced significant changes in labor relations through the struggle for better work conditions, compensation, rights, among others. Throughout modernity we found an individual active, able to organize and, despite its action will not have solved the contradictions of the old economic model of production, we understand that they continue to produce new syntheses facing the reality that is presented, thus producing resistance movements front of incessant attempts to capture the economic model

Abstract:
Esta dissertação tem como objeto de estudo a minha produção de pintura entre os anos de 2006 e 2008 e as relações que esta estabelece com as séries produzidas anteriormente durante minha permanência na Alemanha. O vínculo entre estes trabalhos dá-se principalmente através do uso da fotografia - da sua manipulação e posterior releitura através da pintura - que tem como tema as relações com o cotidiano tanto através da Internet como do contato direto com pessoas e coisas. A montagem destas pinturas no espaço é outro elemento importante dentro do processo de trabalho que enfatiza as relações com o espectador e com a lógica interna da própria pintura.
This paper has as a study purpose my painting production between the years of 2006 and 2008 and the relations that it established with the series previously produced, during my time in Germany. The link between these works occurs mainly through the use of photograph of its manipulation and the subsequent reinterpretation through painting -, which has as subject the relations with the everyday life, whether through the Internet or through the direct contact with people and things. The montage of these paintings in space is another important element within the work process, which emphasizes the relations with the audience and the internal logic of painting itself.

Abstract:
A classificação e detecção de cenas acústicas é uma área de pesquisa em rápido desenvolvimento, pois o sinal produzido pelo som de um áudio contém informações que dados visuais não podem representar. Neste artigo lidamos com o problema de detecção de cenas acústicas envolvendo violência doméstica. Para tanto, propomos a utilização de um método de aprendizado de máquina utilizando o classificador SVM para detectar cenas de violência doméstica de um homem contra uma mulher utilizando o som. Apresentamos análises de experimentos com três diferentes parâmetros extraídos dos áudios. Como resultado, obtemos o melhor desempenho utilizando o parâmetro MFCC conseguindo uma acurácia de 73,14%.

Developing countries are increasingly using auctions for the procurement of utility-scale renewable electricity, due to the potential for attracting private investment. However, auction design and implementation can face serious obstacles due to complex context-specific factors. In 2017, Ethiopia launched its Public–Private Partnership (PPP) policy and procurement framework to promote infrastructure development, including electricity generation. Since 2018, it has organised renewable energy auctions to procure new capacity from independent power producers (IPPs). However, the new framework faces numerous challenges. Using a literature review and primary data from more than 70 interviews and from stakeholder consultations, this study explores the political economy challenges and opportunities facing IPP project preparation, decision-making, coordination and implementation, and risks to investors. To date, Ethiopia has held two rounds of tenders to procure 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity from eight projects; the first tender for two solar photovoltaic (PV) projects led to the signing of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and was hailed as one of the cheapest tariff rates in sub-Saharan Africa, at US$2.526 cents/kilowatt hour (kWh) over 25 years. However, none of the projects have yet become operational. This study also finds fault lines impeding the implementation of IPP projects, including the risk of foreign currency availability and convertibility of Ethiopian birr to expatriate profits. It proposes measures to overcome these obstacles and mitigate risks, to put Ethiopia on course to achieve universal access to electricity by 2030.

This report summarizes the results from the thirteenth year of a national public opinion survey asking U.S. adults questions related to their views on federal transportation taxes. A nationally-representative sample of 2,620 respondents completed the online survey from January 31 to March 10, 2022. The questions test public opinions about raising the federal gas tax rate, replacing the federal gas tax with a new mileage fee, and imposing a mileage fee just on commercial travel. In addition to asking directly about support for these tax options, the survey collected data on respondents’ views on the quality of their local transportation system, their priorities for federal transportation spending, their knowledge about gas taxes, their views on privacy and equity matters related to mileage fees, travel behavior, and standard sociodemographic variables. This large set of variables is used to identify personal characteristics and opinions correlated with support for the tax options. Key findings include that large majorities supported transportation improvements across modes and wanted to see the federal government work towards making the transportation system well maintained, safe, and equitable, as well as to reduce the system’s impact on climate change. Findings related to gas taxes include that only 2% of respondents knew that the federal gas tax rate had not been raised in more than 20 years, and 71% of respondents supported increasing the federal gas tax by 10 cents per gallon if the revenue would be dedicated to maintenance. With respect to mileage fees, just under half of respondents supported some form of mileage fee, whether that was assessed on all travel or just on commercial travel, 58% believe that low-income drivers should pay a reduced mileage fee rate, and 53% thought that electric vehicles should pay a lower rate than gas and diesel vehicles. The analysis of trends across the survey series, which has run from 2010 to 2022, shows that support for both higher gas taxes and a hypothetical new mileage fee has risen slowly but steadily.

Finally, support for the tax and fee options varies mostly by most personal characteristics, but there are frequently large differences correlated with age, community type, and political affiliation.
