Abstract:
ABSTRACT Analogues based on the insect cecropin–bee melittin hybrid peptide (CEME) were studied and analyzed for activity and salt resistance. The new variants were designed to have an increase in amphipathic α-helical content (CP29 and CP26) and in overall positive charge (CP26). The α-helicity of these peptides was demonstrated by circular dichroism spectroscopy in the presence of liposomes. CP29 was shown to have activity against gram-negative bacteria that was similar to or better than those of the parent peptides, and CP26 had similar activity. CP29 had cytoplasmic membrane permeabilization activity, as assessed by the unmasking of cytoplasmic β-galactosidase, similar to that of CEME and its more positively charged derivative named CEMA, whereas CP26 was substantially less effective. The activity of the peptides was not greatly attenuated by an uncoupler of membrane potential, carbonyl cyanide-m-chlorophenylhydrazone. The tryptophan residue in position 2 was shown to be necessary for interaction with cell membranes, as demonstrated by a complete lack of activity in the peptide CP208. Peptides CP29, CEME, and CEMA were resistant to antagonism by 0.1 to 0.3 M NaCl; however, CP26 was resistant to antagonism only by up to 160 mM NaCl. The peptides were generally more antagonized by 3 and 5 mM Mg2+ and by the polyanion alginate. It appeared that the positively charged C terminus in CP26 altered its ability to permeabilize the cytoplasmic membrane of Escherichia coli, although CP26 maintained its ability to kill gram-negative bacteria. These peptides are potential candidates for future therapeutic drugs.

Abstract:
People use smartphones to do many tasks: view email attachments, read social media posts, create and edit photographs, and forward files. The user's perspective on actions performed when creating, viewing, and modifying files (her mental model ) reflects the visible clicks and swipes performed. At the file system and OS, however, such actions are less clear. A single click can lead to a flurry of hundreds of file system reads and writes, system calls, and communication steps. While individual apps can use analytics to record in-app user actions, common patterns such as download-read-forward cross app boundaries and become difficult to discover. That lack leads to inefficiencies in on-device file management and backup. To better enable apps and devices to discover the user's mental model, we present CEMDA, an Android app that automatically detects the user's mental model by applying the theories of file lifecycle events and complex events. CEMDA detects over 10 high level user stories in 4 categories of user actions (create, access, share, modify) while operating completely in user space and without OS modification. CEMDA successfully detects user actions in cross-app actions across popular messaging and productivity apps (e.g., WhatsApp, Adobe Reader) with 75%-100% success while consuming minimal battery and memory.

Abstract:
68 Background: Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CEMRA) is a new technique that is being used with increasing frequency for the evaluation of carotid disease in endarterectomy (CEA) candidates. However, evidence supporting the clinical utility of this test is lacking. Methods: We reviewed the results of CEMRA in comparison to catheter angiography (ANGIO) in a consecutive series of 50 patients being evaluated for CEA who had both tests. Using a prespecified protocol and indications for CEA based on published recommendations, the rate of misclassification for surgery, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values (PPV, NPV) were measured. Results: When compared to ANGIO, 24% (95%CI:12,36) of patients would have been misclassified for CEA based on CEMRA alone. The reasons for misclassification were overestimation of the degree of stenosis in 18% and underestimation in 4%. CEMRA failed to detect a complete carotid occlusion on one case. CEMRA correctly classified all patients with high-grade stenosis (defined as >70% in symptomatic patients and >80% in asymptomatic patients). CEMRA had a sensitivity of 92%, specificty of 62%, PPV of 78% and NPV of 89%. Duplex ultrasound (DUS) was performed in 72% of the patients and the results of all three tests were concordant in 67%. The misclassification rate for CEA in comparison to ANGIO for cases in which CEMRA and DUS were concordant decreased to 17% (95%CI: 2,32) with corresponding increases in the sensitivity (100%) and NPV (100%) but a similar a specificity (60%) and PPV (78%). Conclusion: This study provides the first formal analysis of the performance of CEMRA in comparison to ANGIO in selecting patients for CEA. Clinicians should be cautious when using CEMRA for decisions regarding CEA as a significant number of patients may be misclassified if this test is used alone. The rate of misclassification is reduced when the results of DUS and CEMRA are concordant.

Abstract:
In recent years, as people’s demand for environmental quality has increased, it has become inevitable to monitor sensitive parameters such as temperature and oxygen content. Environmental monitoring wireless sensor networks (EMWSNs) have become a research hotspot because of their flexibility and high monitoring accuracy. This paper proposes a chaotic elite niche evolutionary algorithm (CENEA) for low-power clustering in EMWSNs. To verify the performance of CENEA, simulation experiments are carried out in this paper. Through simulation experiments, CENEA was compared with shuffled frog leaping algorithm (SFLA), differential evolution algorithm (DE), and genetic algorithm (GA) in the same conditional parameters. The results show that CENEA balances node energy and improved node energy usage efficiency. CENEA’s network energy consumption is reduced by 8.3% compared to SFLA, 3.9% lower than DE, and 4.6% lower than GA. Moreover, CENEA improves the precision and minimizes the computation time.

Abstract:
Purpose. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation of 3D time-of-flight MR angiography (TOF MRA) and contrast-enhanced MR angiography (CEMRA) for carotid artery stenosis evaluation at 3T.Material and Methods. Twenty-three patients (5 f, 18 m; mean age 61 y, age range 45–78 y) with internal carotid artery stenosis detected with ultrasonography were examined on a 3.0T MR system. The MR examination included both 3D TOF MRA and CEMRA of the carotid arteries. MR images were evaluated independently by two board-certified radiologists. Stenosis evaluation was based on a five-point scale. Stenosis grades determined by TOF and CEMRA were compared using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and the Wilcoxon test. Cohen’s Kappa was used to evaluate interrater reliability.Results. CEMRA detected stenosis in 24 (52%) of 46 carotids evaluated, while TOF detected stenosis in 27 (59%) of 46 carotids. TOF MRA yielded significantly higher results for stenosis grade in comparison to CEMRA (P=0.014). Interrater agreement was very good for both TOF MRA (κ=0.93) and CEMRA (κ=0.93).Conclusion. At 3T, 3D TOF MRA should not be used as replacement for contrast-enhanced MRA of the carotid arteries, as it results in significantly higher stenosis grades.

Abstract:
The effects of CEME and it complex with GO injected in ovo on the growth and development of chicken embryo hindlimb muscle were investigated. First, the preliminary in vitro study on primary muscle precursor cell culture obtained from a nine-day-old chicken embryo was performed to assess toxicity (MTT assay) of CEME, GO (100 ppm) and it complex with different concentrations (1, 2, 5, and 10 wt.%). The effect on cell proliferation was investigated by BrdU assay. CEME at concentrations 1–5% increased cell proliferation, but not the complex with GO. In vitro cytotoxicity was highest in 10% and GO groups. Next, the main experiment with chicken embryos was performed with CEME, GO and it complex injected in ovo on day one of embryogenesis. On day 20 of embryogenesis survival, morphological development, histological structure of the muscle, and biochemical parameters of blood serum of the embryos were measured. No negative effect on mortality, body weight, or biochemistry of blood after use of CEME or GO-CEME complexes was observed. Interestingly, the slight toxicity of GO, observed in in vitro studies, was not observed in vivo. The use of CEME at the levels of 2% and 5% improved the structure of the lower limb muscle by increasing the number of cells, and the administration of 2% CEME increased the number of nuclei visible in the stained cross-section of the muscle. The complex GO-CEME did not further improve the muscle structure. The results indicate that CEME can be applied as an in ovo enhancer of muscle development in broilers.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Cyanoethyl mercapturic acid (CEMA) is a urinary metabolite of acrylonitrile, a toxicant found in substantial quantities in cigarette smoke, but not in non-combusted products such as e-cigarettes or smokeless tobacco and rarely in the diet or in the general human environment. Thus, we hypothesized that CEMA is an excellent biomarker of combusted tobacco product use. Aims and Methods We tested this hypothesis by analyzing CEMA in the urine of 1259 cigarette smokers (urinary cotinine ≥25 ng/mL) and 1191 nonsmokers. The analyses of CEMA and cotinine were performed by validated liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry methods. Logistic regression was fit for log-transformed CEMA to construct the receiver operating characteristic curve. Results We found that a CEMA cutpoint of 27 pmol/mL urine differentiated cigarette smokers from nonsmokers with sensitivity and specificity greater than 99%. The use of different cotinine cutpoints to define smokers (10–30 ng/mL) had little effect on the results. Conclusions CEMA is a highly reliable urinary biomarker to identify users of combusted tobacco products such as cigarettes as opposed to users of non-combusted products, medicinal nicotine, or nonusers of tobacco products. Implications CEMA can be used to distinguish users of combusted tobacco products from non-combusted products such as e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and medicinal nicotine. Levels of CEMA in the urine of people who use these non-combusted products are extremely low, in contrast to cotinine.

Abstract:
AbstractThe grain-size distribution (GSD) of sediments provides information on sediment provenance, transport processes, and the sedimentary environment. Although a wide range of statistical parameters have been applied to summarize GSDs, most are directed at only parts of the distribution, which limits the amount of environmental information that can be retrieved. Endmember modeling provides a flexible method for unmixing GSDs; however, the calculation of the exact number of endmembers and geologically meaningful endmember spectra remain unresolved using existing modeling methods. Here we present the methodology hierarchical clustering endmember modeling analysis (CEMMA) for unmixing the GSDs of sediments. Within the CEMMA framework, the number of endmembers can be inferred from agglomeration coefficients, and the grain-size spectra of endmembers are defined on the basis of the average distance between the samples in the clusters. After objectively defining grain-size endmembers, we use a least squares algorithm to calculate the fractions of each GSD endmember that contributes to individual samples. To test the CEMMA method, we use a grain-size data set from a sediment core from Wulungu Lake in the Junggar Basin in China, and find that application of the CEMMA methodology yields geologically and mathematically meaningful results. We conclude that CEMMA is a rapid and flexible approach for analyzing the GSDs of sediments.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveMobile phones can replace traditional self-monitoring tools through cell phone-based ecological momentary assessment (CEMA) of lifestyle behaviours and camera phone-based images of meals, i.e. photographic food records (PFR). Adherence to mobile self-monitoring needs to be evaluated in real-world treatment settings. Towards this goal, we examine CEMA and PFR adherence to the use of a mobile app designed to help mothers self-monitor lifestyle behaviours and stress.Design/SettingIn 2012, forty-two mothers recorded CEMA of diet quality, exercise, sleep, stress and mood four times daily and PFR during meals over 6 months in Los Angeles, California, USA.SubjectsA purposive sample of mothers from mixed ethnicities.ResultsAdherence to recording CEMA at least once daily was higher compared with recording PFR at least once daily over the study period (74 v. 11 %); adherence to both types of reports decreased over time. Participants who recorded PFR for more than a day (n 31) were more likely to be obese v. normal- to overweight and to have higher blood pressure, on average (all P<0·05). Based on random-effects regression, CEMA and PFR adherence was highest during weekdays (both P<0·01). Additionally, PFR adherence was associated with older age (P=0·04). CEMA adherence was highest in the morning (P<0·01). PFR recordings occurred throughout the day.ConclusionsVariations in population and temporal characteristics should be considered for mobile assessment schedules. Neither CEMA nor PFR alone is ideal over extended periods.

Abstract:
In the present era, many industries are demanding material transfer equipment that works maximally and cheaply. Belt Conveyor is one of the most efficient material transfer equipment compared to heavy equipment or other transportation equipment, because it can transport the material in large capacity. When designing conveyor belts, many industries want large transport capacity at low cost. One of the cost savings can be done with low motor power consumption. Many standards describe the effective tension calculation on the conveyor belt in detail with the parameters, since the effective tension calculation results are essential for determining motor power. This paper aims to analyze the effective tension on conveyor belts using CEMA 5th, CEMA 6th and DIN 22101 standards with case studies of 1000 TPH carrying capacity and 3 m/s conveyor speed. The difference between CEMA and DIN when determining the effective tension is on the use of coefficient of friction, because DIN uses a global coefficient of friction while CEMA uses different friction coefficients on idler, belt and material. This difference in coefficient of friction results in different ways of calculating the resistance being the accumulation of the effective tension. The result is an effective tension value using DIN 22101 standard of 22,148.16 N with motor power consumption of 66.5 kW, while effective tension value using CEMA 5th standard is 32.201.66 N with motor power consumption 96.47 kW, and effective tension value using CEMA 6th standard is 29,686.48 N with 89.06 kW motor power consumption.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Two kinds of fish-derived natural antimicrobial substances, protamine and catfish (Clarias fuscus) epidermal mucus extract (CEME), were evaluated for their effect on the quality of grass carp fillets. Fillets were atmosphere packaged in cast polypropylene bags and were stored at 4°C in a low-temperature incubator without light. Solutions (0.5%, wt/vol) of CEME and protamine were used for dip pretreatment, respectively. Bacteriological (aerobic plate count, Shewanella putrefaciens, Pseudomonas fluorescens) and physicochemical (pH, total volatile basic nitrogen, K value, surface color, texture profiles, water distribution) parameters and volatile odor compounds were measured on days 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15. The results indicated that CEME and protamine could improve all bacteriological and physicochemical indexes, except water distribution within muscle. In comparison, CEME had a more inhibitory effect, as determined by the aerobic plate count, and was more effective in inhibiting the growth of P. fluorescens; however, protamine was more effective in preventing the production of sulfur-organic (H2S) group substances. Protamine was more effective in inhibiting the growth of S. putrefaciens. This research suggests that protamine and CEME have the potential to improve the quality and extend the shelf life of grass carp fillets.

Abstract:
P30 Background and Purpose: Contrast-enhanced MR angiography (CEMRA) has undergone considerable development in the past several years. Recently, a CEMRA technique was developed using elliptical centric view-ordering. The purpose of this study was to evaluate elliptical centric CEMRA of carotid and vertebral artery dissection. Methods: A retrospective review of CEMRAs in 422 consecutive patients was performed. MR angiography was performed using a volume neck coil or a dedicated neurovascular coil. The CEMRA utilized a 22 x 15 cm field of view (FOV) coronal slab, 44 sections, repetition time of 6.6 msec, echo time 1.4 msec, 45° flip angle, 256 x 168 (due to 3/4 phase FOV) matrix with a scan time of 54 seconds. The reconstruction used zero-filling in all three directions yielding 88 1.4 mm thick sections with 0.7 mm overlap and a 512 x 336 matrix. The actual voxel size was 0.76 (X) x 0.89 (Y) x 1.4 mm, yielding a voxel volume of 0.97 mm 3 before zero-filling. Zero-filling improved resolution and yielded an effective voxel volume of approximately 0.35 mm 3 . Triggering of the CEMRA was performed with MR fluoroscopy or following a timing sequence. 20–25 cc of gadolinium was injected with a power injector at a rate of 3 cc per second followed by 30 cc of saline at a rate of 2 cc per second. Results: Of the 422 patients, 239 had acute or recent symptoms of TIA or ischemic stroke. Of this group, 32 patients had a carotid artery (22) or a vertebral artery (10) dissection. Eleven patients had a pseudoaneurysm detected at the site of the dissection. Recanalization of a previously occluded artery and a resolution of a pseudoaneurysm were demonstrated in one patient, respectively. In one patient, the CEMRA appeared normal, however, a subtle irregularity consistent with a vertebral artery dissection was demonstrated on a conventional angiogram two days following the MR angiogram. Conclusions: Contrast-enhanced elliptical centric MR angiography offers high resolution, venous-suppressed images of the carotid and vertebral arteries. This technique offers promise for noninvasive evaluation and follow-up of carotid and vertebral artery dissections.

The Clinton Administration's Technology Reinvestment Project (TRP) 1994–97 introduced new partnering paradigms to foster dual-use (commercial and military) research and development of new technologies, new commercially viable products and new manufacturing processes (including spin-off and spin-on applications). The TRP at Northeastern University enabled the formation of the Consortium for Electromagnetics Research Applications (CEMRA) which seeded eight partnerships. Each partnership involved one or more university researchers with one or more industrial counterparts, as ‘fellows’ or ‘partners’. Each partnership is a variation on the dual-use theme. The CEMRA partnerships are best-practice models for industry–university collaboration. CEMRA is an interesting application of the Triple Helix innovation model. The partnerships constitute dynamic infrastructures with interactive feedback loops between university and industry researchers and managers. The Triple Helix model is also exemplified in a more general sense by the Technology Reinvestment Project as a whole.

Abstract:
To achieve the global temperature control target under the background of climate warming, it is necessary to establish a systematic carbon dioxide (CO2) emission accounting method system in the field of water resources as soon as possible. In this study, the carbon dioxide emission equivalent analysis (CEEA) method for different water resource behaviors (WRBs) is proposed from four dimensions of development, allocation, utilization, and protection, and a function table of CEEA (FT-CEEA) for WRBs is constructed. The FT-CEEA includes CEEA formulae for 16 aspects in four categories of water resource development, allocation, utilization, and protection. The CEEA method is applied to 31 provinces in China. The results reveal that: (1) There are significant spatial differences in the carbon dioxide emission equivalent (CEE) of WRBs in different provinces of China under the influence of various factors such as water supply structure and natural conditions. (2) Reservoir storage, tap water allocation, and wastewater treatment are the main contributors to CEE in the categories of water resource development, allocation, and protection behaviors, respectively. (3) The water resource utilization behavior category has the most significant CO2 emission and absorption effects, and industrial and domestic water utilization behaviors are the main sources of emission effects. (4) The overall CO2 emission effect of WRBs is greater than the absorption effect. Measures such as increasing the proportion of hydroelectric power generation, improving ecological water security capacity, and strengthening the level of wastewater treatment and reclaimed water reuse are effective ways to promote the goal of carbon neutrality in the field of water resources.

Abstract:
Finding an effective muscle regeneration technique is a priority for regenerative medicine. It is known that the key factors determining tissue formation include cells, capable of proliferating and/or differentiating, a niche (surface) allowing their colonization and growth factors. The interaction between these factors, especially between the surface of the artificial niche and growth factors, is not entirely clear. Moreover, it seems that the use of a complex of complementary growth factors instead of a few strictly defined ones could increase the effectiveness of tissue maturation, including muscle tissue. In this study, we evaluated whether graphene oxide (GO) nanofilm, chicken embryo muscle extract (CEME), and GO combined with CEME would affect the differentiation and functional maturation of muscle precursor cells, as well as the ability to spontaneously contract a pseudo-tissue muscle. CEME was extracted on day 18 of embryogenesis. Muscle cells obtained from an 8-day-old chicken embryo limb bud were treated with GO and CEME. Cell morphology and differentiation were observed using different microscopy methods. Cytotoxicity and viability of cells were measured by lactate dehydrogenase and Vybrant Cell Proliferation assays. Gene expression of myogenic regulatory genes was measured by Real-Time PCR. Our results demonstrate that CEME, independent of the culture surface, was the main factor influencing the intense differentiation of muscle progenitor cells. The present results, for the first time, clearly demonstrated that the cultured tissue-like structure was capable of inducing contractions without externally applied impulses. It has been indicated that a small amount of CEME in media (about 1%) allows the culture of pseudo-tissue muscle capable of spontaneous contraction. The study showed that the graphene oxide may be used as a niche for differentiating muscle cells, but the decisive influence on the maturation of muscle tissue, especially muscle contractions, depends on the complexity of the applied growth factors.

Abstract:
The communication ecology model of successful aging (CEMSA) as a part of aging studies from a communication perspective was replicated in the Indonesian context. The CEMSA provided a specific perspective from communication scholars about the successful aging process. The study of CEMSA has grown significantly to demonstrate the importance of the interactive-communication process to propagate and enhance aging studies. However, there has been no specific aging study from a communication perspective, especially from communication scholars in the Indonesian context. This study applied all concepts, variables, measurements, and analyses from the replicated study. The result showed that seven domains of communication about aging may be relevant to predict successful aging from a negative effect and positive effect, and efficacy toward aging. The model showed that the uncertainty and combination of a negative and positive effect in seven domains of communication about aging could construct the efficacy and success of the aging process. The model with seven domains of communication about aging could be proved while the data were gathered not by self-report.

Abstract:
It is important for the wireless communication field to conduct research on large-scale complex electromagnetic environment (CEME) simulation. There exist many models for computing CEME simulation, including empirical models, half-empirical or half-deterministic models and deterministic models. Most of these models cannot obtain satisfactory results due to the limitation of the capacity of computers. The ray tracing (RT) and parabolic equation (PE) methods are very suitable for large-scale CEME simulation. Based on the introduction of RT and PE, qualitative comparisons of the two methods are analyzed in view of algorithm theory, the category of the model, solution to the model and the application field, and then four specific indices are focused on to analyze the computational complexity, accuracy, speed and parallelism in details. The numerical experiments are presented by the three-dimensional (3D) RT method employing the software of Wireless InSite (WI) and a quasi-3DPE method using the sliced method. Although both RT and PE methods can achieve high speedup using coarse-grained parallel computing, the experimental results indicate that the PE method can obtain a higher speed than the RT method, and the two methods can acquire an approximate precision. A hybrid procedure using both RT and PE methods can obtain a better result for solving CEME problems.

Abstract:
In Indonesia RC structures are widely used for high rise, low rise, shop offices, as well as residential buildings. In February 2018, the first author introduced an RC beam design application for Android [12] for two options. Option one is for calculating nominal moment (Mn) and nominal shear force (Vn) of the section when the beam dimensions (b, h) and reinforcements are known; option two is to calculate the number of reinforcements for Mn and Vn when the dimensions (b, h) are known. In this paper, the first author added option three, namely the optimization for the design of RC beams when the internal forces are known and the application calculates the most optimal dimensions (b, h) and reinforcements. The application developed is named Civil Engineering Mobile Application for Concrete Beams (CEMA) and is called C2. In CEMA the user can follow the step by step calculation and the results of the calculation are stored in a database. For option three of CEMA (optimization of RC beam sections), the application was validated by another method called Teaching-Learning-based Optimization (TLBO) method [10]. It is believed that CEMA which is based on SNI 2847:2013 can be useful for Indonesian structural engineers designing and supervising actual construction RC buildings.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Due to the socioeconomic importance of beef cattle production in Brazil, there are several studies that have been dedicated to the analysis of cattle price formation. The research herein introduces advances in the formulation of these prices by including logistics and industry concentration variables. We aimed to analyze the “prices paid” behavior for male cattle destined for slaughter in the state of Mato Grosso versus other Brazilian states and to evaluate the main factors that influence prices to producers. To this end, several Brazilian databases on price registration were analyzed using regression models. From the mid-1990s onwards, the price paid for cattle presented a scenario of more stable and less variable prices. In all Brazilian states, there was an alignment of prices with the Cepea Indicator, except in the Northeastern states. In Mato Grosso, the Cepea Indicator alone represented more than 90% of the cattle pricing phenomenon. Other factors that contributed to the formation of the price of live cattle in the state were: the distance from São Paulo state, the period of the year, the number of available cattle in the influence region, and slaughterhouse concentration. In the state of Mato Grosso, the Cepea Indicator showed greater discounts when compared to other Brazilian states; therefore, the use of indicators to assess the price paid for live cattle helps to reduce the asymmetry of information between farmers and industry.
