Abstract:
This thesis examines the feasibility of using the compact disc-read only memory (CD-ROM) as the storage medium for the Department of Defense (DOD) construction contracting. Specifically, the DOD sponsored program, headed by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), called Construction Criteria Base (CCB) is evaluated. The program is composed of a compact disc containing government construction criteria including Army, Navy and NASA standards. The test platform used is the specification branch of NAVFAC and its Engineering Field Divisions. The CD-ROM used in conjunction with a microcomputer is compared to the standards libraries of the present which are comprised of paper, microfilm and microfiche storage media. The conclusion reached is that the use of the CD-ROM disc in the DOD construction arena is advisable. Keywords: Read only memories, Data storage systems, Laser disks, Optical storage. Theses. (edc)

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution unlimited.
The vast majority of information distributed throughout the Navy today is done so using various paper products in the form of manuals, printouts, books and other publications. Paper publications are inherently expensive to produce, store and distribute on a large scale. They are also difficult to use when extracting detailed information for ad hoc reports. Compact Disc, Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) technology provides an alternative means to publish and distribute information to large number of users. This thesis examines the capabilities, advantages and disadvantages of CD-ROM technology to determine whether its use would be a preferred strategy for fulfilling information distribution requirements within the Navy. The research included the development of a CD-ROM pre-master file which was used to test the response of a CD-ROM application compared to manually extracting the same information from a printed manual.

Macdonald, Sierra. "Development of an Aural Rehabilitation CD-ROM." Scholar Commons, 2002. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/1525.

Full text
Abstract:
A need has been established for aural rehabilitation (AR) sessions throughout the years. The literature reviewed here demonstrates that new hearing aid users do benefit from a structured follow-up AR program. However, this need is often not met for a variety of patient and audiologist related factors. Therefore, an AR program that could be viewed at home has been suggested. I have developed a prototype for a CD-ROM based aural rehabilitation (AR) program. Included in the program are communication and speechreading strategies, which are the most prevalent materials in AR. The instructional and interaction portions of the prototype were created to be understood by the average person. The prototype includes the use of video, graphics, and audio to support the written information and to incorporate a sense of excitement into the CD-ROM based program.

Massey, Geraldine. "Seven conceptions of CD-ROM information resources." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1995. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/36510/1/36510_Massey_1995.pdf.

Abstract:
At present and in the future, vast amounts of information are being presented and will continue to be presented in a variety of formats that are technologically dependent. In a society where information is a key commodity, students need to develop skills which will help them deal with the information, as well as the format in which it is presented. Currently, one way used to present information is in the format of CD-ROM information resources. Students' experiences of CD-ROM information resources to gain access to information they require in their daily lives, either in the context of their school work or their personal information needs, may influence the development of crucial information skills. Previous research into CD-ROM information resources and their use by students has adopted a first-order perspective. That is, it has looked at technical aspects of the design of CD-ROM information resources; the effectiveness of CD-ROM information resources; and the observed use of CD-ROM information resources. This study adopts a second-order perspective to investigate students' experiences of CD-ROM information resources from the students' point of view. Such a perspective emphasizes the non-dualistic nature of the relationship that exists between students and CD-ROM information resources. Fifty-six male secondary students from two independent schools in Brisbane took part in ten synergetic focus group discussions and forty-nine of those students completed written responses to provide data for this study. The data were then analysed phenomenographically to discover the qualitatively different ways in which CD-ROM information resources were experienced by those students Seven conceptions of CD-ROM information resources were discovered. Participants saw CD-ROM information resources as Emerging Technological Resources, as Terra lncognita, as the Future of Information, as Tools, as Information Silos, as Learning Media and as Limited Information Resources. The structural relationship that exists between the conceptions was found to be dependent on the degree to which CD-ROM information resources were seen either to facilitate or not to facilitate physical or intellectual access to information. A comparison of the participants' conceptions with the "authorized" conceptions revealed that six of the seven conceptions were held by both the participants and the experts in the field. This comparative rate helps to validate this study. The reliability of the findings was confirmed by the use of a co-judge who scrutinized a sample of the data to allocate selected quotations to the categories chosen to describe the conceptions. A high interjudge reliability rate was achieved. The study shows how teachers and teacher-librarians can use a knowledge of the conceptions discovered to introduce students to different ways of experiencing CD-ROM information resources. These different experiences may help to promote the development by students of the information skills so necessary for students to participate actively in the information age, now and in the future.

Chen, Chia-Chun. "Electronic music : an interactive CD-ROM for young people." FIU Digital Commons, 2003. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2129.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to create an electronic music CD-ROM for young people. The intent of this project was to encourage young people to learn about the basics of sound production, audio effects, and the history of electronic music. The methods used for making this CD-ROM included having interactive demonstrations, animations, graphics. and a variety of colors and text styles. Internet links for further information were also provided. This was the first educational CD-ROM of its kind. Although there were Internet sites and a few CD-ROMs covering issues of electronic music, most were not interactive and were not designed for young people. It was expected that this CD-ROM would make the learning process more interesting and would hopefully lead young people to more advanced materials on electronic music.

Doty, Deborah E. "CD-ROM storybooks and reading comprehension of young readers." Virtual Press, 1999. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1159136.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in the level of reading comprehension of young readers when one group of students read an interactive CD-ROM storybook and another group of students read the same story from a conventionally printed book. The participants were 39 second-grade students from two intact classrooms in an urban elementary school in the Midwest.Students from one classroom read the story from an interactive CD-ROM storybook; students in the other classroom read the same story from a conventionally printed book. Students reading the CD-ROM storybook could ask the computer for pronunciation of unknown words. Students reading the conventionally printed book could ask the researcher to pronounce words they did not know. Words for which pronunciation was requested were recorded automatically by the computer; the researcher recorded the words requested by the book group. Students reading the CD-ROM storybooks requested the pronunciation of more words than those students reading the conventionally printed books. The following hypotheses were tested at the .05 level of significance:Hypothesis I: There will be no significant difference between the mean scores of reading comprehension on oral retellings for students reading a traditionally printed storybook and students reading the same text from an interactive CD-ROM storybook.Hypothesis II: There will be no significant difference between the mean scores of reading comprehension on a comprehension test for students reading a traditionally printed storybook and students reading the same text from an interactive CD-ROM storybook. An univariate analysis of variance was used to test the hypotheses. There was no significant difference in mean scores on the retellings between the two groups, therefore hypothesis I failed to be rejected. There was a significant difference in mean scores on the comprehension test between the two groups, therefore hypothesis II was rejected. When comprehension was measured through the use of comprehension questions, students reading the CD-ROM storybook scored higher. Although results were mixed on comprehension measures, observations from this study indicate that the use of CDROM storybooks may be beneficial for young children, particularly those who are reading below grade level.

Abstract:
The goal of the dissertation was to produce a CD-ROM based visual, auditory and text resource for children and adults that provides an understanding of and appreciation for agriculture today and in the future. Research indicated a great need for addressing the concept of agricultural awareness education in a friendly environment. The outcome of the effort is Farming for the Future, a computer program that covers the major operations of a grains and oilseeds farmer in western Canada. It shows the importance of agriculture to the overall economy and the enormous potentials for this and related fields in the future. The approach taken in the development process closely adheres to the recommendations of Vaughan (1994). The development team included the doctoral candidate who served as subject area expert and project manager/editor, a graphics designer, and a programmer. The authoring system used to create the navigational control through the content was Authorware v2 .0. Testing was conducted throughout the development and trial implementations to ensure that objectives were being met and that the product performed as intended. Within these pages find a discussion of the project, the research, the process, the product, and plans for the future. It is the candidate's hope that this experience will be of great assistance in many ways to prospective developers of educational materials.

Buseck, David Allan 1963. "High-density CD-ROM readout using direct phase measurement." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/276545.

Full text
Abstract:
Direct measurement of optical phase is used in a high-density optical disk reader. The increased density is achieved by introducing multiple pit depths to replace the single pit depths of a traditional compact disk. Having four independent pit depths can double the storage capacity of a disk. The multi-level pits are read by direct measurement of the phase difference between two laser spots focused onto the disk surface. Extraction of phase information utilizes the equations of phase shifting interferometry with four shifted fringe patterns created simultaneously by a compact optical head. The system speed is therefore limited by the readout electronics instead of by slow mechanical phase shifters. The resulting system can identify four independent levels as well as the direction of transition from one level to another. The system also has low sensitivity to vibrations and to changes in the fringe contrast and beam intensity.

Abstract:
This study had two purposes: first, to collect information relating to harmonic and intermodulation distortion from several sources into one comprehensive report and second, to describe and develop an interactive CD-ROM as a new method of learning harmonic and intermodulation distortion. The CD-ROM allows students to interact and control the percentage amount of harmonic and intermodulation distortion in order to "calibrate" their ears. In addition, the practical testing environment changes on a random basis to continually challenge the users. These situations allow students to interact at their own speed and therefore customize their learning development.

Gunnarsson, Gunnar Hans 1962. "A NEW READOUT TECHNIQUE FOR CD-ROM MULTILEVEL OPTICAL DATA STORAGE." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/276464.

Abstract:
A technique is presented that utilizes an on-axis intensity measurement to detect the reflected light from a multiple CD-ROM surface. The thesis includes a computer simulation of the detected signal for scans of various structures and discusses finite size detector effects. A suitably sized detector passes 77% of the total light flux at the detector plane without affecting the depth discrimination property of the technique. Experimentally, a breadboard Height Readout System (HRS) could detect height differences on test relief structures. A signal to noise ratio was obtained that corresponds to a noise equivalent height sensitivity of 30 Angstroms. Therefore, the HRS could discriminate between five levels on the test structure. An addition to the new technique uses a phase plate to determine if the focused beam is going into or out of a pit. Thus, the storage capability per unit area on the disk surface can be increased.

Abstract:
A new option to preserve and publish collections in various kinds of themes and proportions came from the new technologies and the conversion from analog information to digital information. The project "Vulnerability of Cinematographic Films Handling, Conservation and Digitization has as subject the cinematographic film, physical and chemistry substrate for the recorded image. By composition characteristics, cinematographic films become vulnerable, they deteriorate themselves easily, through the incorrect storage and handling, thus, as time goes by. The result is the lost of collections and registers, a lost that may be definitive. This dissertation includes a CD-ROM final product of this project. In the CD-ROM, there is information about cinematographic films, identifying their characteristics, kinds of deterioration, handling andcataloguing, and how to preserve collections. About the digitizationprocess, it describes features of digital information in texts, images, sounds and videos; also, it describes how to store this information inoptical and magnetic discs and how to assure the access to thisinformation in the future. This dissertation describes details, features, steps of production, andthe whole information produced to make the CD-ROM, which will presentversions in English, Spanish and Arabic languages.Besides the texts and narratives, 2D animations with the themes citedabove are available in the CD-ROM. Conservation aspects and digitalobsolescence information are also considered. Other kinds of availableinformation are videos and images, completing the set of digitalinformation that is used in the making up of multimedia projects. Theobjective is to show information with the integration of different mediasproviding easy navigation and the interaction by the user.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was twofold: first, to collect information relating to `classic' sound synthesis methodologies which have formed the basis of current synthesis methods into one comprehensive report, and secondly, to describe and develop an interactive CD-ROM as a new tool for the instruction of these synthesis methods. The historic trend has been the acquisition of sound synthesis through direct interaction with a particular piece of software or hardware. The intentions of this interactive media are to allow students to form conceptual knowledge, and develop the ability to perceive timbral differences produced by these methods. This environment allows students to interact at their own speed and assist in customizing their learning development.

Abstract:
In this study, a computer simulation model for library CD-ROM LAN systems was created. Using this model, the system optimization problems were examined. The simulation model imitated the process of the actual decision variables changing their values and generated the corresponding results. Under a certain system environment, if the values of decision variables are changing, the system performances are getting changed also. This study investigated these relationships with the created model. The system users' interarrival time, service time, and other relevant data were collected on randomly selected days in a university library. For data collection, both of the observation and the system automatic metering software were used. According to the collected data, a discrete events simulation model was created with GPSS/H. The simulation model was proven valid and accurate by a pilot test and by the calculation with queuing theory. Statistical tests were used for data comparison and analysis. In addition, animation technique was used to show the simulation process by using Proof Animation. By this technique, the simulation process was monitored on the screen.

ABSTRACT: A need has been established for aural rehabilitation (AR) sessions throughout the years.
System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader.
Mode of access: World Wide Web.

Abstract:
For my creative thesis project I authored an interactive tour of the Ball State Department of Art. Many underlying factors go into this project. My desire to learn multimedia design, the departments desire to develop a new information tool and having the necessary hardware and software to do such a project were all key to its sucess. In the summer of 1994 I came to Ball State to learn multimedia authoring while getting a master's degree in art. Unknown to me at that time, the department had set a goal of increasing visibility both within and beyond the Ball State community. Faculty members Professor Phil Repp and Professor Christine Paul were collaborating on a promotional identity campaign. From these collaborations grew the idea of a departmental publication to promote the mission and programs of the Department of Art. With the rapid advancement of technology, it seemed appropriate to use computers as part of this promotional campaign. As Professors Paul and Repp researched the possible ways in which computers could be incorporated into this project, many questions remained. Exactly what form should a project like this take and who could do it? Careful discussion and planning also followed over what physical form the project should take (i.e. video tape, a computer disk, or printed material). Eventually the decision was made that an interactive tour of the Department of Art on CD-ROM was the most appropriate solution. For the amount of information that needed to be included and to engage the end user in a dynamic, interactive way, this medium was also the most logical. My decision to return to school coincides perfectly with the departments needs. Professor Paul’s and Professor Repp’s collaboration led to the conclusion that a third person would be needed. Someone who was already literate in advanced computer graphics and had the desire for such an undertaking. Therefore, my goals of advancing my understanding of Macintosh based digital imagery learning multimedia are significant on two levels; my career as a teacher and a professional artist would realize significant gains and this project is an outstanding addition to my portfolio. For the past several years, the primary area of artistic study for me has been in the area of computer graphics and I came to Ball State last summer with some very specific goals. One of them being to learn Macromedia Director (the authoring package I used to create the project). Director is nationally recognized by professionals in this field as the top program for this type of work. Therefore, this was both an opportunity to reach personal goals and to create a thesis project that could be used as an important part of the Department of Arts identity campaign. My thesis project is the result of my own goals and the Department of Arts goals to utilize cutting edge technology for designing innovative computer programs.I’m sure at the onset of this project that I did not understand the full magnitude of an undertaking such as this. However, it is very rewarding to look back and see both how far I’ve come personally and how the piece has progressed into a dynamic information tool.
