Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the feasibility of using the compact disc-read only memory (CD-ROM) as the storage medium for the Department of Defense (DOD) construction contracting. Specifically, the DOD sponsored program, headed by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), called Construction Criteria Base (CCB) is evaluated. The program is composed of a compact disc containing government construction criteria including Army, Navy and NASA standards. The test platform used is the specification branch of NAVFAC and its Engineering Field Divisions. The CD-ROM used in conjunction with a microcomputer is compared to the standards libraries of the present which are comprised of paper, microfilm and microfiche storage media. The conclusion reached is that the use of the CD-ROM disc in the DOD construction arena is advisable. Keywords: Read only memories, Data storage systems, Laser disks, Optical storage. Theses. (edc)

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution unlimited.
The vast majority of information distributed throughout the Navy today is done so using various paper products in the form of manuals, printouts, books and other publications. Paper publications are inherently expensive to produce, store and distribute on a large scale. They are also difficult to use when extracting detailed information for ad hoc reports. Compact Disc, Read Only Memory (CD-ROM) technology provides an alternative means to publish and distribute information to large number of users. This thesis examines the capabilities, advantages and disadvantages of CD-ROM technology to determine whether its use would be a preferred strategy for fulfilling information distribution requirements within the Navy. The research included the development of a CD-ROM pre-master file which was used to test the response of a CD-ROM application compared to manually extracting the same information from a printed manual.

Abstract:
A need has been established for aural rehabilitation (AR) sessions throughout the years. The literature reviewed here demonstrates that new hearing aid users do benefit from a structured follow-up AR program. However, this need is often not met for a variety of patient and audiologist related factors. Therefore, an AR program that could be viewed at home has been suggested. I have developed a prototype for a CD-ROM based aural rehabilitation (AR) program. Included in the program are communication and speechreading strategies, which are the most prevalent materials in AR. The instructional and interaction portions of the prototype were created to be understood by the average person. The prototype includes the use of video, graphics, and audio to support the written information and to incorporate a sense of excitement into the CD-ROM based program.

Massey, Geraldine. "Seven conceptions of CD-ROM information resources." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1995. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/36510/1/36510_Massey_1995.pdf.

Abstract:
At present and in the future, vast amounts of information are being presented and will continue to be presented in a variety of formats that are technologically dependent. In a society where information is a key commodity, students need to develop skills which will help them deal with the information, as well as the format in which it is presented. Currently, one way used to present information is in the format of CD-ROM information resources. Students' experiences of CD-ROM information resources to gain access to information they require in their daily lives, either in the context of their school work or their personal information needs, may influence the development of crucial information skills. Previous research into CD-ROM information resources and their use by students has adopted a first-order perspective. That is, it has looked at technical aspects of the design of CD-ROM information resources; the effectiveness of CD-ROM information resources; and the observed use of CD-ROM information resources. This study adopts a second-order perspective to investigate students' experiences of CD-ROM information resources from the students' point of view. Such a perspective emphasizes the non-dualistic nature of the relationship that exists between students and CD-ROM information resources. Fifty-six male secondary students from two independent schools in Brisbane took part in ten synergetic focus group discussions and forty-nine of those students completed written responses to provide data for this study. The data were then analysed phenomenographically to discover the qualitatively different ways in which CD-ROM information resources were experienced by those students Seven conceptions of CD-ROM information resources were discovered. Participants saw CD-ROM information resources as Emerging Technological Resources, as Terra lncognita, as the Future of Information, as Tools, as Information Silos, as Learning Media and as Limited Information Resources. The structural relationship that exists between the conceptions was found to be dependent on the degree to which CD-ROM information resources were seen either to facilitate or not to facilitate physical or intellectual access to information. A comparison of the participants' conceptions with the "authorized" conceptions revealed that six of the seven conceptions were held by both the participants and the experts in the field. This comparative rate helps to validate this study. The reliability of the findings was confirmed by the use of a co-judge who scrutinized a sample of the data to allocate selected quotations to the categories chosen to describe the conceptions. A high interjudge reliability rate was achieved. The study shows how teachers and teacher-librarians can use a knowledge of the conceptions discovered to introduce students to different ways of experiencing CD-ROM information resources. These different experiences may help to promote the development by students of the information skills so necessary for students to participate actively in the information age, now and in the future.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to create an electronic music CD-ROM for young people. The intent of this project was to encourage young people to learn about the basics of sound production, audio effects, and the history of electronic music. The methods used for making this CD-ROM included having interactive demonstrations, animations, graphics. and a variety of colors and text styles. Internet links for further information were also provided. This was the first educational CD-ROM of its kind. Although there were Internet sites and a few CD-ROMs covering issues of electronic music, most were not interactive and were not designed for young people. It was expected that this CD-ROM would make the learning process more interesting and would hopefully lead young people to more advanced materials on electronic music.

Abstract:
Read only Compact Discs (CDs), such as the CD-ROM and Digital Audio CD, are made by concurrently forming the plastic disc and the spiral track of pits that represent the data carried on the surface of the disc via an injection molding operation, and subsequently applying a reflective metal layer in a vacuum coating step and a protective polymer layer via spin coating. The original data that is replicated on these "pressed" CDs is carefully written on a master disc (that is used to form the injection molding tool) using a precision master laser writer that is housed in a very clean environment. On the other hand, writable CDs, such as the CD-R and PhotoCD, are made by first using injection molding to form a plastic disc that has a continuous spiral (tracking) groove on one surface and then sequentially coating that grooved surface with a vacuum deposited dielectric layer, a spin coated organic "pit-forming" layer, a vacuum coated metal reflector layer and a spin coated organic protective layer. Although the spiral tracking groove that is replicated on the surface of the writable CD's molded plastic substrate is initially written on a master disc using essentially the same precision laser writer that was used to create the pressed CDs' master discs, the marks that correspond to the user digital data carried by the writable CD are written one at a time via an optical CD disc drive that is housed in an ordinary environment.
