Abstract:
Abstract This paper studies four grammatical markers of emotions in Tacana, an Amazonian language from the Takanan family spoken in Northern Bolivia. Two markers express positive emotions, chidi ‘affection’ and ichenu ‘compassion’. The other two express negative emotions: base ‘depreciation 1’ and madha ‘depreciation 2’. The paper also provides a historical-comparative study of similar morphemes in the other Takanan languages (Araona, Cavineña, Ese Ejja and Reyesano). The Tacana affection morpheme is probably reconstructible to a diminutive marker in proto-Takanan. The compassion and two depreciation morphemes are not reconstructible but recent grammaticalizations of lexical items still used in the different Takanan languages. Interestingly, these lexemes do not display any synchronic or diachronic link with the expression of “diminutivization” or “augmentativization”. Therefore, this paper suggests that the morphological expression of emotions should be studied in its own right, and not necessarily as a subtype of the evaluative field of research.

Full text
Abstract:
Cavinula Mann & Stickle is small genus presently comprising 25 taxa distinguished by the linear to round-elliptical valve shape, uniseriate striae, presence of nodules and distinctive terminal pores. Most often the species from the genus have been reported from colder northern or alpine oligotrophic aquatic systems, or moist sub-aerial habitats. Observation of samples from different localities reveals fourteen Cavinula taxa are distributed across North America. Descriptions of confirmed species including designated types are provided with regard to their taxonomy, autecology, and distribution in Canada and USA. Light and Scanning Electron Microscope observations of different samples and type material reveal high morphological variation within some of the taxa. Two and three morphotypes are recognized within C. cocconeiformis and C. pseudoscutiformis. Cavinula kernii and C. maculata are recognized as new species and formal description and differential diagnosis are presented. The biogeography of the genus Cavinula in North America is represented by three groups of species. The first group comprises taxa with more restricted distribution in oligotrophic, cold and/or alpine environments from the Arctic Archipelago and the Rocky Mountains in western North America. The second group comprises more tolerant species with broader distributions across a wider range of ecological conditions. The third group from south-eastern North America, represented by C. maculata, is found in low pH and specific conductance conditions with low nutrients. Globally, forty-one percent of the known taxa are present in North America. This number is subject to change after a better understanding of the different morphotypes and global taxa distributions.

Abstract:
Cavinula lapidosa (Krasske) Lange-Bertalot is a rare species found in oligo- and mesotrophic waters with low electrolyte content, on swamps, wet rocks, mosses and bogs. The occurrence of C. lapidosa was recorded during an analysis of the diatom diversity in Poland. This species was found in the headwaters of Jamów stream and a tributary of River Wisłoka from 2007 to 2014. Cavinula lapidosa is a diatom considered "extinct" or "probably extinct" within the territory of Poland. The species develops mainly in the upper, shaded sections of streams, always as single cells among mosses growing on rocks and rarely on the rocks themselves. In 2018–2019 numerous population of this species was found on mosses overgrowing an old abandoned basement in the Wisłoka River basin area. In this study, the lectotype slide of Navicula lapidosa was examined using light microscopy, and based on the collected samples, the first SEM observations of the ultrastructure of the valves were made.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
An overview of the diatom research in the DR Congo is given based on literature data starting in 1938 with the work of Zanon and excluding the East African Lakes as these were already discussed in previous papers. For each literature record the diatom genera mentioned are presented as well as all diatom taxa described from the Congo as new. In total, 106 new taxa were documented, of which Nitzschia with 40 taxa is far the most important genus followed by Navicula s.l. and Pinnularia and with 15 and 13 taxa respectively. Particular attention was paid to the local research of students found in unpublished theses at bachelor, licentiate, master and PhD level. Diatom records in these works are almost all restricted to genus level, although in the last decade an attempt to delimit species can be observed. This accompanies the renewed taxonomic interest in the Congo basin during the last decade. Renewed taxonomic interest can also be seen in the genera: the first period being situated during the lumping period, while more recent works follow the current taxonomic classification, for example Navicula s.l. versus Navicula, Cavinula, Craticula, Diadesmis, Geissleria, Humidophila, Luticola, etc.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Landscapes settled by indigenous communities represent nuanced inter-relationships between culture and environment, where balance is achieved through Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS). Through IKS, native peoples worldwide live, farm, and consume resources in a manner that is responsive to natural systems and, as such, their lands present less deforestation and more sustainable production per capita than is exhibited by non-indigenous practices. In Bolivia, the Origin Farmer Indigenous Territory (TIOC) communities of Yaminahua-Machineri and Takana-Cavineño, located in the North Amazon, are facing external threats of non-indigenous anthropogenic land use change, such as road-building and industrial-scale resource extraction. In order to understand the potential environmental and cultural loss to these territories, the present work seeks to determine the present, base-line conservation state within these Bolivian communities, and forecast land use change and its consequences until the year 2030. This was undertaken using a three-stage protocol: (a) the TIOC communities’ current forest-based livelihoods, characteristics and management were determined using on-site observation techniques and extensive literature review; (b) the historical land use change (LUC) from natural vegetation to anthropogenic use was estimated using multitemporal satellite imagery; and, finally, (c) geographically explicit non-indigenous anthropogenic land-use change threat was extrapolated until 2030 using the GEOMOD modeler from the TerraSet software. Preliminary results show that both TIOCs case-sites are fairly conserved due to their forest dependence. However, deforestation and degradation could be evidenced, particularly within TIOC areas not officially recognized by the central government, due to pressures from surrounding, new non-indigenous settlements, road infrastructure, connection to markets, and the threat of the oil exploitation. Projected LUC suggest serious threats to the unrecognized TIOC areas if community governance is not reinforced, and if extractivist and non-indigenous development patterns continue to be promoted by state and central government.

Full text
Abstract:
Relatively little is known about stained glass windows in England predating c. 1170; however, art-historical evaluation by Caviness (1987) argued that four figures from the “Ancestors series” of Canterbury Cathedral, usually dated to the late 12th and early 13th century, in fact date earlier (c. 1130–1160). This would place them amongst the earliest stained glass in England, and the world. Building on our previous work, we address Caviness’s hypothesis using a methodology based upon analysis of a few, well-measured heavy trace elements and a 3D-printed attachment for a pXRF spectrometer that facilitates in situ analysis. The results confirm two major periods of “recycling” or re-using medieval glass. The first is consistent with Caviness’s argument that figures predating the 1174 fire were reused in the early 13th century. The results suggest that in addition to figures, ornamental borders were reused, indicating the presence of more early glass than previously thought. In the second period of recycling (1790s), surviving figures from the Ancestors series were removed and adapted into rectangular panels for insertion into large Perpendicular-style windows elsewhere in the cathedral. The results show that the glasses used to adapt the panels to a rectangular shape were broadly contemporary with the glasses used to glaze the original Ancestors windows, again representing a more extensive presence of medieval glass in the windows.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A high-resolution diatom assemblage’s database was built on a 65 cm long sediment core (Tó34f), obtained from the Siófok Basin of Lake Balaton in 2017. Light microscope photo-documentation was developed out of 15,797 diatom valves. The pictures were arranged according to taxonomy from centric diatoms via araphids, monoraphids to biraphid forms. 30 categories were established to group the diatom taxa instead of species level identification requiring high level of expertise. Some (1) characteristic, and easily identifiable taxa (Karayevia clevei, Cavinula scutelloides) were distinguished on species level, (2) taxa were grouped at genus level (like Amphora, Aulacoseira, Neidium), while (3) were joined based on their morphological features. Two large groups were created based on this approach, the “light fragilarioids” and the “heavy fragilarioids”. Both groups contain diatoms with taxonomic problems, e.g. Staurosira, Staurosirella genera and other fragilarioids. This approach allowed us to make paleo-ecological reconstruction on (1) rough taxonomic data and (2) apply trait-based methods. Diatom assemblage’s zones were defined by CONISS clustering method, validated by the broken stick model. Though the planktonic trait (referring the high lake level) is insignificant (< 5%) in most of the studied record, but some peaks (>35%) point to high water level. The most recent trend of increasing number of planktonic diatoms is hypothesized to be due to the recent global warming. We demonstrated that traits are a good alternative to time and expertise demanding species-level determination of diatoms, thus a quick method is found for paleo-ecological reconstructions, while the photo-base good for detailed taxonomic work at a future time.

Abstract:

Abstract:
High-altitude lakes are sensitive to modern and past climate changes. Given their low-water temperatures, alkalinity, and nutrient levels, small climatic differences can strongly affect their water chemistry, and/or biodiversity. In central Mexico, there are only two high-altitude lakes, and both are within the crater of the Nevado de Toluca volcano. Here, we present a paleolimnological record from one of these lakes: La Luna. Previous paleoenvironmental work showed that it was sensitive to the Little Ice Age (LIA) cooling. Our results show that sediment accumulation began ~6900 to 6100 cal. yr BP under periglacial conditions and that lake conditions were established ~6000 cal. yr BP. One tephra layer was dated to ~5600 cal. yr BP, with no evidence of more recent volcanic activity. The early stages of this lake (6000–4700 cal. yr BP) contained Cladocera and diatom assemblages with different species composition than modern assemblages. This early stage community structure was related to more mesic conditions and cooler winters inferred by the high abundance of planktonic Aulacoseira nivaloides and of Chydorus cf. sphaericus. The establishment of modern limnological conditions after 4700 cal. yr BP is inferred from Cladocera and diatom assemblages similar to recent samples. A reduction in A. nivaloides and low magnetic-susceptibility values suggest lower lakes levels, a trend consistent with lower available moisture in central Mexico after 4000 cal. yr BP. The rest of the sequence shows the impact of two cold periods, the first one around 3000 cal. yr BP, identified by a new increase in Chydorus cf. sphaericus. The second was the larger impact associated with the LIA (AD 1350–1910), and an increase in Cavinula pseudoscutiformis and Pinnularia microstauron suggesting an increase in lake water pH. Also, organic matter and photosynthetic pigments increased during this period showing an increase in nutrient levels and productivity. Finally, the coldest interval during the LIA (AD 1570–1890) is identified by an important reduction in arboreal pollen concentration which points to a wider environmental impact of this cold event.

Abstract:
Abstract Cavina E., Bucchi R. and Busse P. 2018. The general pattern of seasonal dynamics of the autumn migration of the Wood Pigeon Columba palumbus in Italy. Ring 40: 3-18. Given the scarcity of studies on the migration of the Wood Pigeon through Italy, the first systematic observations by a network of hunters, as citizen researchers, can be presented as a starting point for more in-depth analyses. Observations from the years 1998-2006 are analysed and presented in a generalized form. During this period more than 100 observation sites, covering most of Italy, were active for about 40 days every autumn. Migration over Italy was described in terms of the timing and intensity of migration. Special attention was directed to the long-term number dynamics and seasonal dynamics of the passage. The most intensive migration was observed within northern Italy, while lower intensity is visible more to the south of the peninsula. Following tendencies in numbers of observed migrants within the ten years of the study, we can find positive tendencies in most of the northern provinces, while three negative trends are visible in central Italy. The study of the seasonal pattern, in terms of the number dynamics of the passage and the frequency of pronounced peak days, strongly suggests that there are five or six waves of pigeons passing through Italy in different parts of the autumn that are quite stable between years. Every year the time of the passage includes a few peak days of migration.

Abstract:
One of the most important medieval law books, the Sachsenspiegel (The Saxon Mirror), composed by Eike von Repgow around 1220/1230, represents a stunning bibliophile masterpiece in its various <?page nr="463"?>manuscript versions. Much discussed already by German, but also American and other scholars, it has now received once again extensive attention and careful analysis by the art historian Madeline H. Caveness and her Germanist colleague, Charles G. Nelson, who passed away in 2008. This was certainly a great team, though it might have been very useful if also a legal historian had joined them. The major manuscripts were all beautifully illuminated in order to explain the various criminal acts and the necessary punishments. Thus, scholars have a fantastic instrument available to study a wide range of topics relevant for thirteenth-century German society, but also other neighboring people because the Sachsenspiegel became highly influential as a role model for other law books throughout the later Middle Ages.
