Abstract:
Intact amniotic fluid membranes may serve to protect the extremely fragile preterm infant from some of the mechanical shearing forces caused by strong uterine contraction. A “caul” delivery occurs when part of the amniotic sac is still stuck to the neonate at the time of delivery, usually attached to the cephalic end or podalic end. An “en caul” delivery is a subtype of caul delivery, which occurs when the entire intact amnion (amniotic fluid sac) is delivered with the neonate inside.1,2 This article introduces the technique of “en caul” Caesarean delivery and reviews our experience. Abdominal (or Caesarean) en caul deliveries can be performed intentionally with surgical technique, on contrary to vaginal en caul deliveries, which occur spontaneously; as a result, vaginal en caul deliveries are considered to be rarer though exact statistics are difficult to determine. According to some estimates, caul deliveries would be 1 - 2 %, or roughly 1 in 80,000, of all vaginal deliveries if no membranes were artificially ruptured (ARM / Amniotomy).2,3 Most en caul births are low gravida, premature and low birth weight (LBW). Prematurity is a significant risk factor for various postpartum complications and is hazards. Previous case reports have poorly described pertinent maternal information beyond gestational age at birth (e.g., past medical history, past surgical history, familial history, and demographic data) which could be used to analyse additional risk factors for en caul birth.

Abstract:
En caul deliveries are defined as a fetus that is delivered completely contained within an amniotic sac and are considered to be less common than 1 in 80,000 live births. Vaginal en caul births compared to abdominal or cesarean are the rarest subtype. Most en caul births are associated with prematurity and low gravida. The combination of prematurity, high gravida, vaginal en caul birth, and severe postpartum complications has not previously been described. We report a woman with gravida of 12 delivering vaginally a neonate female en caul at the extremely preterm gestational age of 23 weeks. The neonate subsequently decompensated, underwent respiratory distress, and was diagnosed with a bilateral intraventricular hemorrhage. Owing to deteriorating status, supportive care was removed and the infant was pronounced dead 5 days after delivery.

Abstract:
In the Fall of 1962, high school seniors Leon Zachery and Deitra Caul submitted applications for the Philadelphia City Scholarship competition. Both students excelled in high school, but both Zachery, whose mother worked in childcare, and Caul, whose mother did clerical work for the Presbyterian Life Magazine, feared that without outside assistance they would not be able to afford college tuition. In the letter supporting his application, Zachery's biology teacher at West Philadelphia high school described him as a “serious young man” who “knows a great deal about various subjects that is not required study… [and] seems to have become well-read from his intensive study.” “He is an exceptional boy [who] I feel should go to college or it would be a dreadful waste,” the teacher concluded. Caul's guidance counselor, William Cannady, offered a similar appraisal. Cannady, one of the first black high school teachers in Philadelphia, noted that Deitra Caul graduated first in her class at Gratz high school and “participated extensively in extra-curricular activities without any loss in academic status.” “It would be tragic,” Cannady wrote, “if Miss Caul had to forgo college because of a lack of finances.” With stellar academic records and demonstrated financial need, Zachery and Caul were among the forty-nine City Scholarship winners in 1962–1963, and the only two African-American students so selected.

Abstract:
En caul deliveries are very rare and are associated with prematurity. Approximately 40 percent of spontaneous premature births are thought to be caused by infection. Preterm along with oligohydramnios can lead to en caul delivery. We report a case of 27-year-old gravida 4 multiparous women with a history of 2 normal vaginal deliveries NSVD and 1 spontaneous abortion, who presented at 32 weeks of gestation in active labour and delivered preterm viable female with an intact placenta contained within the amniotic sac as a unit “en caul.” Since the patient gave a history of lower back pain with burning micturition for 1 month which remained consistent after delivery, ultrasonography whole abdomen was done and bilateral pyelonephritis was diagnosed. However, the baby’s sepsis screen was negative and discharged healthy. We report this case because of its rarity of occurrence and to show that intact amniotic membrane during birth can protect the baby from birth trauma and infections.

Abstract:
The present study was aimed to know the effect of dietary energy levels on growth and carcass characteristics in Black Bengal goats. Nine female Black Bengal goats were divided into three groups having three goats in each group. Three iso-nitrogenous diets containing three levels of metabolizable energy (9.17, 10.40 and 11.63 MJ/kg DM) were randomly assigned to three groups. Goats were stall fed and slaughtered after 150 days of trial. Results showed that live weight gain was higher (28.3 ± 1.7 g/day) in high energy fed goats than others. There were no significant differences on total and daily average dry matter intake in different groups of goats. Body length was significantly higher in high energy fed group than others. Carcass weight and dressing percentage were also higher (p<0.05) in high energy fed goats. Caul fat and gut fill weight differed significantly (p<0.05) among the treatment groups, and higher caul fat and lower gut fill were obtained in high energy fed goats than others. In conclusion, high energy diet enhanced the growth, dressing percentage and carcass gain of female goats.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjas.v43i2.20719 Bang. J. Anim. Sci. 2014. 43 (2): 159-165

Abstract:
AbstractThe risks and technical difficulties at the cesarean delivery for extremely premature infant under 1,000g are as follows: (1) a premature infant is very weak for pressure of uterine wall or human hands, (2) skin of infant is really premature and weak, (3) uterine wall is thick and difficult to incise at lower segment of uterus, (4) classical vertical incision or reverse T-shape incision are at risk for future uterine rupture, and (5) at the timing of rupture of membrane, uterine wall may contract drastically and the infant is trapped the uterine wall, so called “hug-me-tight-uterus”.To resolve the problems, we use the technique of “En Caul” cesarean delivery with nitroglycerin. Intravenous injection of nitroglycerin just before uterine incision made the rapid and sufficient relaxation of uterine muscle. After getting adequate uterine relaxation, U- or J-shaped incision is made to lower segment of the uterus; however, we never incise the membrane before the infant was delivered. The baby is delivered with wrapped amniotic fluid and the membrane, which protect the infant against the pressure of uterine wall or surgeon’s hands. The infant is gently handled to neonatologist by “En Caul” with the placenta. Neonatologist can make the membrane ruptured and resuscitation. Own blood transfusion can be made through the umbilical cord and placenta, if the infant was anemic or hypovolemic.

Abstract:
Out-of-plane ply wrinkling is a major quality issue for carbon fiber reinforced prepreg parts. Its triggers are numerous and not every influencing parameter is fully understood, yet. The research presented in this paper aims at providing a better insight into ply wrinkling generated during autoclave compaction using caul plates. A detailed description of the experimental set-up and the applied methodology is provided. Statistical analyses of varying influencing factors such as part thickness, geometry, tool–part interaction, and laminate lay-up are presented. This, in turn, generates a better understanding of their impact on fiber wrinkling risk and size. Part geometry and compaction deformation show the most significant influence on wrinkle size. However, for the given manufacturing concept, tool–part interaction also plays a significant role. It influences both the dimension and location of the wrinkles, as well as the existence and size of a critical flange length of the part. A noteworthy effect on wrinkle generation and size can also be observed when adding unidirectional plies to an otherwise fabric laminate.

Abstract:
Automated fiber placement (AFP), once limited to aerospace, is gaining acceptance and offers great potential for marine structures. This paper describes the influence of manufacturing defects, gaps, and overlaps, on the out-of-plane properties of carbon/epoxy composites manufactured by AFP. Apparent interlaminar shear strength measured by short beam shear tests was not affected by the presence of defects. However, the defects do affect delamination propagation. Under Mode I (tension) loading a small crack arrest effect is noted, resulting in higher apparent fracture energies, particularly for specimens manufactured using a caul plate. Under Mode II (in-plane shear) loading there is a more significant effect with increased fracture resistance, as stable propagation for specimens with small gaps changes to arrest with unstable propagation for larger gaps.

Abstract:
Electoral systems as endogenous re-distributive institutions (Tsebelis, 1990) help to define the rules of the game. In this manner they have an important impact among regional, class, ethnic, gender, and other sub-groups of the general population on the distribution and variation in outcome of who is nominated for, and elected to, national office. In particular, there is a well-established and growing literature on the impact of electoral systems and electoral system reform on the representation of women in national legislative bodies (Darcy, Welch, and Clarke 1994; Matland and Taylor 1997; Caul 1998; Rule 1987; Matland 1998). In general, these studies have concluded that more women are elected in proportional rather than in plurality or majority electoral systems. However, a major difficulty in interpreting these findings is created by the historical, cultural, economic, and institutional differences among cases chosen for comparison.

Abstract:
Objectives- To understand how university libraries are engaging with the university community (students, faculty, campus partners, administration) when working through the strategic planning process. Methods- Literature review and exploratory open-ended survey to members of CAUL (Council of Australian University Librarians), CARL (Canadian Association of Research Libraries), CONZUL (Council of New Zealand University Librarians), and RLUK (Research Libraries UK) who are most directly involved in the strategic planning process at their library. Results- Out of a potential 113 participants from 4 countries, 31 people replied to the survey in total (27%). Libraries most often mentioned the use of regularly-scheduled surveys to inform their strategic planning which helps to truncate the process for some respondents, as opposed to conducting user feedback specifically for the strategic plan process. Other quantitative methods include customer intelligence and library-produced data. Qualitative methods include the use of focus groups, interviews, and user experience/design techniques to help inform the strategic plan. The focus of questions to users tended to fall towards user-focused (with or without library lens), library-focused, trends & vision, and feedback on plan. Conclusions- Combining both quantitative and qualitative methods can help give a fuller picture for librarians working on a strategic plan. Having the university community join the conversation in how the library moves forward is an important but difficult endeavour. Regardless, the university library needs to be adaptive to the rapidly changing environment around it. Having a sense of how other libraries engage with the university community benefits others who are tasked with strategic planning

Abstract:
Language learners often face communication problems when they need to express themselves and do not have the ability to do so. On the other hand, continuous advances in technology are creating new opportunities to improve second language (L2) acquisition through context-aware ubiquitous learning (CAUL) technology. Since vocabulary is the foundation of all language acquisition, this article presents ULearnEnglish, an open-source system to allow ubiquitous English learning focused on incidental vocabulary acquisition. To evaluate our proposal, 15 learners used the developed system, and 10 answered a survey based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Results indicate a favorable response to the application of incidental learning techniques in combination with the learner context. ULearnEnglish achieved an acceptance rate of 78.66% for the perception of utility, 96% for the perception of ease of use, 86.5% for user context assessment, and 88% for ubiquity. Among its main contributions, this study demonstrates a possible tool for ubiquitous use in the future in language learning; additionally, further studies can use the available resources to develop the system.

Calder, AA. "Prostaglandins as therapy for labour induction or therapeutic abortion." Reproduction, Fertility and Development 2, no. 5 (1990): 553. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/rd9900553.

Abstract:
(a) Prostaglandins (especially PGE2) are highly effective for ripening the cervix and inducing labour. If the cervix is already ripe, a small dose of PGE2 may be all that is required to initiate a labour which resembles spontaneous labour as closely as possible. (b) Amniotomy is the central event. Although it is possible for an infant to be born in the caul, i.e. in intact membranes, it is the general rule for the membranes to rupture or to be ruptured during labour. Such rupture leads to heightened activity of endogenous prostaglandins. The timing of amniotomy is crucial. Performed too early, before the cervix is ripe, it may lead to complications. Delayed too late, we may lose the advantage of its uterine sensitizing. (c) Oxytocin is a potent myometrial stimulant if the uterus is primed to respond to it by prostaglandins, either endogenous or exogenous. It must be given intravenously and many mothers find this disagreeable. In most instances of labour induction, a proper combination of prostaglandin therapy and amniotomy may allow the use of oxytocin to be avoided, but it remains the therapy of final resort to carry labour through to delivery if required.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A comparative reading of Freud’s canonical case study “From the History of an Infantile Neurosis” (1918) and the memoir written by the protagonist of that study, Sergei Pankejeff, known as the Wolf Man (1971a), centers on the complex matrix of meanings embodied in the act of lifting the veil. The neurotic symptom of a veil seemingly in front of the analysand’s eyes is interpreted by Freud as a repetition of his birth in a Glückshaube (German for “caul,” literally a “lucky hood”). The veil is represented as an ambivalent object both for Freud and for Pankejeff, who are enticed by the sense of a final truth behind the veil yet constantly doubt the possibility of grasping it. For Freud, psychoanalysis is the very process of lifting the veil, yet his analysand remained for him an unsolved riddle. Pankejeff, in a volume dedicated to his identity as the Wolf Man (Gardiner 1971a), created an autobiographical text that deliberately avoids telling the story of the analysand, thus drawing a veil over his story. The paradox embodied in lifting the veil is discussed in relation to Walter Benjamin’s distinction between materiality and truth and his notion of the inherent unity of the veil and the veiled (1925).

Abstract:
Disbond arrest features combined with a structural health monitoring system for permanent bondline surveillance have the potential to significantly increase the safety of adhesive bonds in composite structures. A core requirement is that the integration of such features is achieved without causing weakening of the bondline. We present the design of a smart inlay equipped with a micro strain sensor-system fabricated on a polyvinyliden fluorid (PVDF) foil material. This material has proven disbond arrest functionality, but has not before been used as a substrate in lithographic micro sensor fabrication. Only with special pretreatment can it meet the requirements of thin film sensor elements regarding surface roughness and adhesion. Moreover, the sensor integration into composite material using a standard manufacturing procedure reveals that the smart inlays endure this process even though subjected to high temperatures, curing reactions and plasma treatment. Most critical is the substrate melting during curing when sensory function is preserved with a covering caul plate that stabilizes the fragile measuring grids. The smart inlays are tested by static mechanical loading, showing that they can be stretched far beyond critical elongations of composites before failure. The health monitoring function is verified by testing the specimens with integrated sensors in a cantilever bending setup. The results prove the feasibility of micro sensors detecting strain gradients on a disbond arresting substrate to form a so-called multifunctional bondline.
