Roy, Martin. "Porosity in configured structures : effect of ply drops and caul sheets in the processing of composite parts." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/55736.

Full text
Abstract:
Fiber reinforced polymer composites offer a variety of processing advantages in the manufacturing of high performance structures. However, due to a variety of potential quality defects, there is a great deal of risk associated with composite processing. Amongst these numerous defects, porosity has always been one of critical concern. Although there exists a great deal of literature on the subject, the bulk of existing research to date is restricted to the processing of flat uniform parts. As such, there exists a discrepancy between the current academic understanding and the practical knowledge needed in current practice. The objective of this thesis is to advance our knowledge of porosity to processing scenarios commonly seen in current practice. This has been done by conducting a comprehensive examination of the relationship between the mechanisms driving void evolution and the use of two commonly used structural configurations. These are ply drops and caul sheets. In this study, a series of configured composite parts were manufactured to parametrically assess the effect of ply drops and caul sheets both separately and in combination. The porosity content and final thickness profile of the parts were evaluated through optical microscopy and thickness measurements. The results from this parametric study show that resin pressure shielding due to lack of compliance between the laminate and the caul sheet can be a primary cause of porosity. It has also been found that lack of compliance caused resin migration which carries with it adverse effects on final part quality. The resin pressure distribution of ply-drop laminates processed with and without caul sheets was tracked in-situ through the use of instrumented tooling. The results from these experiments support the findings of the parametric study and provide a comprehensive understanding of the dominant mechanisms. These mechanisms where simulated with state of the art finite element software. These simulations demonstrate that commercially available software packages can be used to enhance our understanding of void evolution in complex processing scenarios. As such, the findings presented in this thesis are of great engineering value to current practices since they can be applied to a wide variety of applications.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the life and career of Bret Easton Ellis, and the influences of his work on the author's development as a writer. Part one encapsulates a novel written specifically for this thesis. 'Call waiting' is a harsh look at modern friendships, the role of work in these relationships and the proliferation of shallow communication through the advent of email. A critical reflection follows, examining the process that led to the novel's creation. Three specific areas are focussed on: the direct influence of Ellis' novel 'The rules of attraction' on the overall themes of 'Call waiting', the realisation of the project and the various editing changes and narrative developments that arose during the writing of the novel, and an examination of the inspiration behind the novel's creation. Part two considers Ellis' role in the literary world of the 1980s, his own complicity in the creation of a career as a celebrity author, and the carefully manufactured persona Ellis presents to the world. In Part three the thesis is concluded with a close analysis of the publication of Ellis' controversial novel 'American psycho'. This chapter explores the negative publicity the novel attracted and the possible causes of the ensuing backlash against the author.

Abstract:
In diploma thesis Open Call I focus on unequal position of artists in current art world in which, despite the transparent practices like open calls, still persists the cult of name, the power of networking and personal recommendation. This topic I artistically process in form of practical artistic intervention, which is close to the tactics of 1:1 scale of Arte Útil - specifically by creation of software tool called Nomin. Its purpose is to support weakened or marginalized groups of artists. Nomin uses properties of email protocol SMTP to allow its users-spectators to send fake self-recommending emails - from email addresses of famous curators to the inboxes various galleries or other art institutions. During development of program Nomin and its technical background (software documentation, web page etc.) I followed the paradigm of free, libre, open source software (FLOSS) and also the methodology of agile software development in order to provide in this gesamtsoftwerk the users-spectators with fully functional, user-friendly software and give them possibility to influence further development of Nomin or directly participate on it. Created artwork is thus not a single artefact but rather a set of interconnected objects and practices grounded in the network of social bonds and behaviours which balances on the edge of institutional critique, useful art, participatory art and collective performance.

Full text
Abstract:
Mating Call is a memoir set in the Pacific Northwest during the 1990s, in what Spin Magazine calls "Seattle's Golden Age." The story begins with my arrival in the West and a self-inflicted broken heart, a relationship I had severed due to "missing pieces." The quest is to find these pieces, and throughout the search the memoir analyzes love and relationships for Generation X. The quest takes seven years, during which the narrative explores Seattle's breweries and bedrooms, and the Northwest's rainforests and volcanoes, all the while investigating interpersonal chemistry, sex, and friendship. For all the searching, the missing pieces are actually discovered by accident, when happenstance deals my heart a second blow; the quest is over, and I return East.

Abstract:
In today’s world of telecommunications there is an increasing problem with reaching people one wishes to speak to. People have several telephones and this makes the situation complex for the caller. Many phone calls are left unanswered. The Call Forwarding Agent is in this report presented as a solution to this reachability problem. The idea is to have an agent setting call forwards of all the users’ phones or numbers, towards the terminal where he is available. Later, when someone calls any of the users’ phones, the call will be terminated at the terminal where the user can receive it. The Call Forwarding Agent is compared to a number of similar services. The personal number service offers the same functionality as the Call Forwarding Agent, but the Call Forwarding Agent does not force the subscriber to change phone number and it also admits a simple call screening. We have implemented a prototype of the Call Forwarding Agent that can set call forwards of regular Public Service Telephony Network terminals and the Internet telephones in Ellemtel’s IP-phone system.

Vogel, Whitney Elan Schneider. ""To Call or Not to Call?" The Impact of Supervisor Training on Call Center Employee Attitudes and Well-Being." PDXScholar, 2019. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/5242.

Full text
Abstract:
Call center customer service occupations represent a growing proportion of the U.S. economy in the digital age. These roles are characterized by low control, high levels of emotional labor, and burnout. Turnover rates in call centers are often twice as high as in other industries. To combat these challenges, I delivered a supervisor-focused mental health training intervention targeted at improving supervisor supportive behaviors and employee outcomes. The indirect effect of supervisor training on employee outcomes related to perceived supervisor support, problem-focused coping, burnout, turnover intentions, and withdrawal behaviors were evaluated. A waitlist control design (N = 74) was used to assess the effectiveness of the training up to six weeks after the intervention. Additionally, a weekly diary study evaluated the process of behavior and attitude change for employees. Results indicated that the intervention did not impact the hypothesized employee outcomes up to six weeks following training. Implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Tramnitzke, Danny. "Object Call Graph Visualization." Thesis, Växjö University, School of Mathematics and Systems Engineering, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:vxu:diva-1674.

Full text
Abstract:

In this thesis an approach to visualize internal behaviour of object oriented software is developed.

The runtime information, which can be described as objects calling other objects, is displayed as a graph consisting of nodes and edges. The aim is to design an application in Java, which takes the runtime information in form of an object call graph and visualizes it as a tree and as a force directed view.

Therefore, first a data model has to be designed, holding an object call sequence. Furthermore, a discussion about graph definition languages and according tools is made. After this different graph layout algorithms are examined as well as graph displaying tools. Finally, the implementation of this visualization program deals with the combination of these three components graph data extraction, graph layout calculation and graph visualization.

Gaztañaga, Jon Blancou. "eCall++: improved emergency call." Master's thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/17213.

Full text
Abstract:
Mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e Telecomunicações
Thanks to the fast technological development and the pervasive adoption of personal electronic devices, e.g. smartphones, activity trackers, etc., with a multitude of sensors and communication protocols, some applications in the field of the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) can take advantage of such devices. For example, smartphones can be used for navigation, as driver interface for cooperative vehicular applications or even to detect accidents. Automated accident detection is a potential way to improve the road emergency services, thus decreasing the number of fatalities. For this purpose, the European Union (EU) has launched the eCall initiative, an automated accident detection and notification system, that will be mandatory for new cars in 2018. Legacy vehicles can also be retrofitted with eCall devices, that may require some wiring to install. An obvious solution, for legacy vehicles, is using the smartphone to detect accidents and disseminate emergency calls. A smartphone based accident detection algorithm and eCall application was already developed at Instituto de Telecomunicações in the scope of the HEADWAY project. However, this application, as the native eCall, missed to offer some important features, notably information on the number of passenger in the vehicle and a video stream of the accident site. This was the context behind the proposal presented in the dissertation. The eCall++ is a smartphone application that implements native eCall (accident detection and cellular network based emergency call), plus warning dissemination to vehicles in the vicinity of the accident site, based on ITS G5 communications. Additionally, the eCall++ application running on a vehicle that is involded in an accident also transmits to the emergency service the number of passengers in the car. An eCall++ application running on a car close to the accident site, but not involved in the accident, can be asked by the emergency service to transmit a video stream of the accident, using the vehicular network (ETSI ITS G5 communications). This will promote a better assistance to road vehicle crash location and to facilitate relevant information about traffic incidents to authorities. Due to privacy reasons it was decided not to use the camera of the vehicles involved in an accident.

Hala ere, aplikazio honek, eCall natiboa bezala, ez ditu funtzionalitate ugari garatzen, bideo streaming-a edo bidaiari detekzioa adibidez. Hau da tesina honen aurreko testuingurua. eCall++-a eCall sistema natiboa, istripu detekzioa eta mobil sareaetatik egindako larrialdiko deiak, garatzen duen aplikazioa da. Abstract:
This is an ethnography written by Malinda Castruita, an Education Specialist in Southern California. The ethnography was written between May 2018 and April 2019. Castruita is a Claremont Graduate University Teacher Education Candidate who sheds light on her personal experience in the past and present in both general and special education settings. She is employed in the city of Duarte, California as a Special Day Class teacher with a population of transitional kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade students. The research included addresses the individual educational experiences of her life, a synapse of her family background, as well as her views on social justice, and her educational philosophy and why she chose to become an educator. Castruita chose three specific students in her class to focus her research on for this narrative. These specific students are referred to as “case studies” and “focus students”. The case studies portray a student that is an English learner, another that has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), and one student that has experienced a significant life experience. She researched their culture, funds of knowledge, and academic status of each student. The findings were conducted through focus student home visits, extensive scholarly research, classroom observation, hands-on teaching, and ongoing parent-teacher communication. Castruita will also discuss the cultural and socio-economic findings within the community of her school and Castruita also went out into the Duarte community and conducted member interviews and attended various events to gain a perspective and understanding of the local economy, history, demographics and overall community atmosphere. Malinda also gives a self-analysis of her teaching style and experience within the classroom. She reflects on her effectiveness as a teacher in both whole class and individual student perspectives. Overall, this thorough and thoughtful narrative will allow the reader to step into the community of Duarte and Castruita’s classroom environment and learn how viewing students through the lens of compassion and understanding allows teachers to teach students more efficiently and successfully.

Abstract:
Each day, anti-virus companies receive large quantities of potentially harmful executables. Many of the malicious samples among these executables are variations of earlier encountered malware, created by their authors to evade pattern-based detection. Consequently, robust detection approaches are required, capable of recognizing similar samples automatically. In this thesis, malware detection through call graphs is studied. In a call graph, the functions of a binary executable are represented as vertices, and the calls between those functions as edges. By representing malware samples as call graphs, it is possible to derive and detect structural similarities between multiple samples. The latter can be used to implement generic malware detection schemes, which can proactively detect existing versions of the malware, as well as future releases with similar characteristics. To compare call graphs mutually, we compute pairwise graph similarity scores via graphmatchings which minimize an objective function known as the Graph Edit Distance. Finding exact graph matchings is intractable for large call graph instances. Hence we investigate several efficient approximation algorithms. Next, to facilitate the discovery of similar malware samples, we employ several clustering algorithms, including variations on k-medoids clustering and DBSCAN clustering algorithms. Clustering experiments are conducted on a collection of real malware samples, and the results are evaluated against manual classifications provided by virus analysts from F-Secure Corporation. Experiments show that it is indeed possible to accurately detect malware families using the DBSCAN clustering algorithm. Based on our results, we anticipate that in the future it is possible to use call graphs to analyse the emergence of new malware families, and ultimately to automate implementinggeneric protection schemes for malware families.

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] The identification of individual animals based on acoustic parameters is a non-invasive method of identifying individuals with considerable advantages over physical marking procedures. One requirement for an effective and practical method of acoustic individual identification is that it is call-independent, i.e. determining identity does not require a comparison of the same call or song type. This means that an individuals identity over time can be determined regardless of any changes to its vocal repertoire, and different individuals can be compared regardless of whether they share calls. Although several methods of acoustic identification currently exist, for example discriminant function analysis or spectrographic cross-correlation, none are call-independent. Call-independent identification has been developed for human speaker recognition, and this thesis aimed to: 1) determine if call-independent identification was possible in birds, using similar methods to those used for human speaker recognition, 2) examine the impact of noise in a recording on the identification accuracy and determine methods of removing the noise and increasing accuracy, 3) provide a comparison of features and classifiers to determine the best method of call-independent identification in birds, and 4) determine the practical limitations of call-independent identification in birds, with respect to increasing population size, changing vocal characteristics over time, using different call categories, and using the method in an open population. ... For classification, Gaussian mixture models and probabilistic neural networks resulted in higher accuracy, and were simpler to use, than multilayer perceptrons. Using the best methods of feature extraction and classification resulted in 86-95.5% identification accuracy for two passerine species, with all individuals correctly identified. A study of the limitations of the technique, in terms of population size, the category of call used, accuracy over time, and the effects of having an open population, found that acoustic identification using perceptual linear prediction and probabilistic neural networks can be used to successfully identify individuals in a population of at least 40 individuals, can be used successfully on call categories other than song, and can be used in open populations in which a new recording may belong to a previously unknown individual. However, identity was only able to be determined with accuracy for less than three months, limiting the current technique to short-term field studies. This thesis demonstrates the application of speaker recognition technology to enable call-independent identification in birds. Call-independence is a pre-requisite for the successful application of acoustic individual identification in many species, especially passerines, but has so far received little attention in the scientific literature. This thesis demonstrates that call-independent identification is possible in birds, as well as testing and finding methods to overcome the practical limitations of the methods, enabling their future use in biological studies, particularly for the conservation of threatened species.
