Abstract:
Intact amniotic fluid membranes may serve to protect the extremely fragile preterm infant from some of the mechanical shearing forces caused by strong uterine contraction. A “caul” delivery occurs when part of the amniotic sac is still stuck to the neonate at the time of delivery, usually attached to the cephalic end or podalic end. An “en caul” delivery is a subtype of caul delivery, which occurs when the entire intact amnion (amniotic fluid sac) is delivered with the neonate inside.1,2 This article introduces the technique of “en caul” Caesarean delivery and reviews our experience. Abdominal (or Caesarean) en caul deliveries can be performed intentionally with surgical technique, on contrary to vaginal en caul deliveries, which occur spontaneously; as a result, vaginal en caul deliveries are considered to be rarer though exact statistics are difficult to determine. According to some estimates, caul deliveries would be 1 - 2 %, or roughly 1 in 80,000, of all vaginal deliveries if no membranes were artificially ruptured (ARM / Amniotomy).2,3 Most en caul births are low gravida, premature and low birth weight (LBW). Prematurity is a significant risk factor for various postpartum complications and is hazards. Previous case reports have poorly described pertinent maternal information beyond gestational age at birth (e.g., past medical history, past surgical history, familial history, and demographic data) which could be used to analyse additional risk factors for en caul birth.

Abstract:
En caul deliveries are defined as a fetus that is delivered completely contained within an amniotic sac and are considered to be less common than 1 in 80,000 live births. Vaginal en caul births compared to abdominal or cesarean are the rarest subtype. Most en caul births are associated with prematurity and low gravida. The combination of prematurity, high gravida, vaginal en caul birth, and severe postpartum complications has not previously been described. We report a woman with gravida of 12 delivering vaginally a neonate female en caul at the extremely preterm gestational age of 23 weeks. The neonate subsequently decompensated, underwent respiratory distress, and was diagnosed with a bilateral intraventricular hemorrhage. Owing to deteriorating status, supportive care was removed and the infant was pronounced dead 5 days after delivery.

Roy, Martin. "Porosity in configured structures : effect of ply drops and caul sheets in the processing of composite parts." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/55736.

Full text
Abstract:
Fiber reinforced polymer composites offer a variety of processing advantages in the manufacturing of high performance structures. However, due to a variety of potential quality defects, there is a great deal of risk associated with composite processing. Amongst these numerous defects, porosity has always been one of critical concern. Although there exists a great deal of literature on the subject, the bulk of existing research to date is restricted to the processing of flat uniform parts. As such, there exists a discrepancy between the current academic understanding and the practical knowledge needed in current practice. The objective of this thesis is to advance our knowledge of porosity to processing scenarios commonly seen in current practice. This has been done by conducting a comprehensive examination of the relationship between the mechanisms driving void evolution and the use of two commonly used structural configurations. These are ply drops and caul sheets. In this study, a series of configured composite parts were manufactured to parametrically assess the effect of ply drops and caul sheets both separately and in combination. The porosity content and final thickness profile of the parts were evaluated through optical microscopy and thickness measurements. The results from this parametric study show that resin pressure shielding due to lack of compliance between the laminate and the caul sheet can be a primary cause of porosity. It has also been found that lack of compliance caused resin migration which carries with it adverse effects on final part quality. The resin pressure distribution of ply-drop laminates processed with and without caul sheets was tracked in-situ through the use of instrumented tooling. The results from these experiments support the findings of the parametric study and provide a comprehensive understanding of the dominant mechanisms. These mechanisms where simulated with state of the art finite element software. These simulations demonstrate that commercially available software packages can be used to enhance our understanding of void evolution in complex processing scenarios. As such, the findings presented in this thesis are of great engineering value to current practices since they can be applied to a wide variety of applications.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the life and career of Bret Easton Ellis, and the influences of his work on the author's development as a writer. Part one encapsulates a novel written specifically for this thesis. 'Call waiting' is a harsh look at modern friendships, the role of work in these relationships and the proliferation of shallow communication through the advent of email. A critical reflection follows, examining the process that led to the novel's creation. Three specific areas are focussed on: the direct influence of Ellis' novel 'The rules of attraction' on the overall themes of 'Call waiting', the realisation of the project and the various editing changes and narrative developments that arose during the writing of the novel, and an examination of the inspiration behind the novel's creation. Part two considers Ellis' role in the literary world of the 1980s, his own complicity in the creation of a career as a celebrity author, and the carefully manufactured persona Ellis presents to the world. In Part three the thesis is concluded with a close analysis of the publication of Ellis' controversial novel 'American psycho'. This chapter explores the negative publicity the novel attracted and the possible causes of the ensuing backlash against the author.

Abstract:
In diploma thesis Open Call I focus on unequal position of artists in current art world in which, despite the transparent practices like open calls, still persists the cult of name, the power of networking and personal recommendation. This topic I artistically process in form of practical artistic intervention, which is close to the tactics of 1:1 scale of Arte Útil - specifically by creation of software tool called Nomin. Its purpose is to support weakened or marginalized groups of artists. Nomin uses properties of email protocol SMTP to allow its users-spectators to send fake self-recommending emails - from email addresses of famous curators to the inboxes various galleries or other art institutions. During development of program Nomin and its technical background (software documentation, web page etc.) I followed the paradigm of free, libre, open source software (FLOSS) and also the methodology of agile software development in order to provide in this gesamtsoftwerk the users-spectators with fully functional, user-friendly software and give them possibility to influence further development of Nomin or directly participate on it. Created artwork is thus not a single artefact but rather a set of interconnected objects and practices grounded in the network of social bonds and behaviours which balances on the edge of institutional critique, useful art, participatory art and collective performance.

Abstract:
Mating Call is a memoir set in the Pacific Northwest during the 1990s, in what Spin Magazine calls "Seattle's Golden Age." The story begins with my arrival in the West and a self-inflicted broken heart, a relationship I had severed due to "missing pieces." The quest is to find these pieces, and throughout the search the memoir analyzes love and relationships for Generation X. The quest takes seven years, during which the narrative explores Seattle's breweries and bedrooms, and the Northwest's rainforests and volcanoes, all the while investigating interpersonal chemistry, sex, and friendship. For all the searching, the missing pieces are actually discovered by accident, when happenstance deals my heart a second blow; the quest is over, and I return East.
