Abstract:
The research project sought to gain initial information about the perceived purpose of Catholic schools from the perspectives of the administration teams in the diocese of Rockhampton. Catholic schools were first established ever one hundred years ago; society, Catholicism and parental expectations have changed over time. This study aims to inform future planning by the major stakeholders in Catholic education in the diocese of Rockhampton, to attempt to provide the most suitable educational structures to meet the demands of contemporary society. “It seems reasonable to suggest that the resolutions to some of these third millennium challenges confronting those with the responsibility of leading Catholic schools is unlikely to be found within a nineteenth century paradigm” (Leavey, 1993, p. 9). As the study is concerned with the perceptions of Catholic school administration teams, case study was selected. The research focussed on three areas: - The perceived purposes of the Catholic school. - The changing role of the Catholic school today and it’s relationship to the parish. - The changing roles of the parish and school. The study concluded that families are not as closely associated with parish structures as they were in the past, and that many families are becoming more involved in school activities and rejecting those offered by parishes. Staffs of schools are increasingly being expected to perform in roles for which they are not trained – counselling is the most predominant activity. The only experience of church for a large percentage of school families is the school.

Abstract:
For the last forty years, since the end of the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church has been committed to renewal. In Queensland, Catholic schools have responded to this commitment by undertaking cyclical renewal processes since the early 1980s. The focus of this research was the process of Catholic School Renewal in the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. The review of the literature focused on literature relating to school effectiveness and school improvement internationally and nationally, as well as Catholic School Renewal in Queensland generally and the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton specifically. The following research questions focused the research design: 1. How is the process of Catholic School Renewal a source of potential growth? 2. How does the process of Catholic School Renewal ensure quality Catholic education? 3. How is the process of Catholic School Renewal a useful quality assurance tool? The epistemological stance adopted for the research was constructionism. The research paradigm adopted was interpretivism with social interactionism as the selected orientation. As case study is congruent with an interpretivist tradition of research it was adopted as a useful way of gaining insight into the perspectives of the participants. The case was comprised of some staff members who worked in one of four Catholic primary schools situated in three of the four regions of the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton. Data collection took the form of semi-structured interviews and a survey questionnaire with the data being analysed using the constant comparative method. The study concluded that the process of Catholic School Renewal in the Diocese of Rockhampton is a useful quality assurance tool which helps to ensure quality Catholic education. Whether or not the process is a source of growth is dependent on a number of factors, paramount among which is the approach and ability of the Regional Supervisor of Schools. There were six major recommendations arising out of the research. These related to: 1. Ensuring the Regional Supervisor of Schools has certain attributes and knowledge. 2. Inservicing school staff on the purpose and nature of Catholic School Renewal. 3. Providing External Validation Team members with adequate inservice. 4. Permitting more involvement of the school principal in the process. 5. Initiating a review of the process of Catholic School Renewal in the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton. 6. Rockhampton Catholic Education continuing to use the process.

Lannon, David. "Catholic education in the Salford Diocese 1870-1944." Thesis, University of Hull, 2003. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5466.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the educational provision for Roman Catholic children in the Diocese of Salford 1870-1944. It begins with a review of the position in 1870, attained by the efforts of William Turner. the first Bishop of Salford, in collaboration with his priests and people. It is argued that this effort was based on Five Principles: Education had to be based on Religion, Catholic Education had to be under Catholic Control, Catholic Education had to be made available to all Catholic children as and when means permit, Catholic Education had to be efficient in its religious and secular content, The rights of parents to decide upon the education of their children had to be respected. An account is then given of the growth of both elementary and post-elementary provision across the diocese under five successive bishops, Herbert Vaughan (later Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster), Thomas Bilsborrow, Louis Charles Casartelli, Thomas Henshaw and Henry Vincent Marshall. Consideration is given to the "political" activity that took place throughout this period in connection with Catholic Education. The question is posed and answered: Were the Five Principles adhered to or developed by successive bishops? Case Studies are presented throughout the thesis to illustrate the general arguments by particular examples. The thesis ends in the prelude to the 1944 Education Act.

Foster, Graham Paul. "'Middle-England diocese, Middle-England Catholicism' : the development of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nottingham 1850-1915." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/14188.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis aims to chart the development of the Diocese of Nottingham from 1850 to 1915, and through a comparison with the historiography of the period, to show how far it correlates with the accepted norms of nineteenth and early twentieth century Catholic development. Methodologically, the thesis aims to pioneer an in-depth integrated study on the development of the Diocese of Nottingham from 1850 to 1915, a largely unstudied area as far as Catholics and Catholicism is concerned. The period studied commences with the Restoration of the Hierarchy, (1850), and terminates with the resignation of Bishop Brindle in 1915. There is a unity in the period chosen as it encompasses the Episcopacies of one Diocesan Administrator, Bishop William Bernard Ullathorne (1850-1, who was concurrently Bishop of Birmingham), and Bishop Joseph William Hendren, (1851-3), Bishop Richard Roskell (1853-74), Bishop Edward Bagshawe (1874-1901), and Bishop Robert Brindle (1901-15). While the thesis addresses the way the Bishops tackled the problems they faced on taking up their appointments, as well as the ways in which they dealt with the demands placed upon them by Westminster, the emphasis is on the broader Catholic community and the way it evolved. This is dealt with through a wide-ranging analysis which locates local developments within a national framework. While each chapter has a dominant focus for organisational reasons, the thesis aims is to show how matters inter-related, and subsequently affected the Diocese's developmental path. The overall outline of the Diocese's historical background between 1850 and 1915, is described through a study of the characteristics, aims and methods used by Bishop Ullathorne, and the Bishops of Nottingham, in their attempts to turn the Diocese of Nottingham from a 2 concept on paper in 1850, to being an important part of the cultural, social and religious landscape of the East Midlands by 1915. Succeeding chapters deal with ultramontanism and how it was uniquely interpreted locally, defining who comprised the local Catholic community, the evolution of a Diocesan political ethos, education, and anti-Catholicism: the latter may be seen as perhaps the example par excellence of the need for integrated studies. The primary sources used in this thesis bring new perspectives to the study of nineteenth century Catholicism, and their use greatly extends our knowledge and understanding of the period. This is especially true as they have not been applied before to an understanding of the Nottingham Diocese. Use has been made of around 80 newspapers (daily, twice weekly and weekly) and monthly magazines, both Catholic and Protestant, published across the Diocese, as well as national publications. In several cases, as in Nottingham and Leicester, their attitudes varied from being anti- to pro- Catholic, which meant a greater degree of balance in the understanding of events. Use was also made of newly available papers from the De Lisle, Gainsborough, and Howard families that have not been used before. Other material was personally collected from the descendants of nineteenth century families. In addition to papers from the Orders' Archives, the Westminster and Birmingham Arch-Diocesan Archives, the Vatican and other Diocesan Archives have been consulted, such as those at Northampton, Salford and Leeds. The Nottingham Archives provided material that has not been used before, including the extant papers of Bishops Ullathorne, Hendren, Roskell, Bagshawe, Brindle, and Dunn. Access was given to extracts from the Chapter Minutes and newly deposited material from priests who were active in the period. As well as explaining how the Nottingham Diocese developed between 1850 and 1915, the thesis deals with the differences noted locally between `Catholicism' and 3 `Catholic'. Attempts are made to explain the dichotomy noted; namely that while `Catholicism' entailed hatred and led to anti-Catholicism, individual `Catholics' were frequently admired and respected. The thesis will make an important contribution to our knowledge in a number of ways. Fundamentally, it is the only macro-diocesan study of its type. The newly available content will provide an increased data base for studies of nineteenth-century Catholicism. By synthesising the information, localised trends have been established which are compared to, or used to correct, generalisations portrayed in the historiography of secondary literature that currently exists. The newly available information can also be used to test some of the hypotheses used regarding Catholics. The structure of the thesis will hopefully lay down a model for further Diocesan studies.

Trying to understand a process through which individuals are raised in certain skills and dispositions, "physical and moral states" that are required by society as a whole, but also by specified groups to which one belongs, I conducted a research about the formation of Catholic priests process. I tried to understand from the experience of the diocese of São Carlos / SP, which dynamic, actors and situations were involved in this process of socialization, through which are cultivated in seminarians a number of provisions that in the future will contribute to the exercise of their priestly ministry. This set of provisions that I call priestly habitus is unconsciously and sometimes deliberately instrumentalized by these social actors, both in the daily performance of their social roles and in the maintenance activity or achievement of social positions in the Catholic Church or even in other fields such as the academic one. The dynamics of such priestly habitus cultivation takes place in a broad context, larger than the boundaries of a seminary, covering a range of training situations arranged through an institutionalized itinerary experiences that culminates in ordination. Such a priestly itinerary - equipped with native significance through a structured vocational speech that reduces the importance of profane motivations in the admission at the seminary provides the trajectories of these actors with a purity of inclination that omits the possibility of other interests (less transcendental ones). Finally, I discuss how to some members of the Catholic clergy, to be a priest not as regarded in the official speeches, but in the daily practices is less of an inescapable fixed identity than a contingency identification activity, which is evoked or omitted by these social actors according to the nature of relations at stake.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effect that the Catholic Diocese of Aitape in the Sandaun Province of Papua New Guinea, and by implication, the Catholic Church, has had on the lives of women, as assessed by women of the Diocese themselves. Much research has been done into how women can be, and/or become, empowered through development project approaches and through the agency of development agencies and people. Many such projects have been relatively short lived and have also been sector specific. If such projects are seen to have an impact upon the lives of women, a long standing institution such as the Catholic Diocese of Aitape which has such a great influence on the lives of the people living within the Diocese could also be expected to have an impact upon the lives of women. Women reflecting upon their own lives and the lives of their mothers and grandmothers and what differences there are and how the Diocese/Church has contributed to these changes has provided the data for analysis within this thesis. Based upon the reflections of women, selected as being representative of the women of the Diocese, the Diocese and the Catholic Church have indeed contributed to a degree of empowerment for women that these women may not have otherwise achieved within contemporary Papua New Guinea society. The various teaching, policies and practices of the Diocese and the Church have enabled a greater freedom of association, movement and opportunity for women to individually and collectively become empowered to some degree. The patriarchal nature of the Church hierarchy and the interaction between the Church and the Diocese however remains a barrier to true gender equality across all aspects of the Diocese and Church. While this remains so, increasing localisation of the Church within Melanesian society may well mean that gains made by women through the agency of the Catholic Diocese of Aitape, need to be defended from erosion by a more Melanesian version of that same Diocese. Tinsey, Wayne Maurice, and res cand@acu edu au. "Teachers, Clergy and Catholic Schools: A study of perceptions of the religious dimension of the mission of Catholic schools and relationships between teachers and clergy in the Lismore Diocese." Australian Catholic University. Department of Religious Education, 1998. http://dlibrary.acu.edu.au/digitaltheses/public/adt-acuvp218.04092009.

Abstract:
The Catholic Diocese of Lismore is situated in the north-east coastal area of New South Wales, Australia. Catholic education in this diocese is based on the premise that school and parish work together in partnership for the personal and spiritual development of students. This premise relies on the assumption that teachers and clergy share a common view of the mission of Catholic schools. However, some recent studies highlight a lack of shared vision and indicate that teachers and clergy frequently have different expectations of what Catholic schools should be. This study examines similarities and differences in perceptions of the religious dimension of the mission of Catholic schools among the teachers and clergy in the Lismore Diocese. It identifies areas in which there is a significant lack of congruence. The study also explores the relationships and the quality of partnerships between teachers and clergy and identifies issues that are potential sources of tension. Furthermore, it considers implications for change. Self-completion questionnaires were given to the target population which consisted of all the full time teachers in Catholic schools and all the clergy on active duties in the Lismore Diocese at the beginning of 1997. Subsequent semi-structured interviews were conducted with all the clergy in the group and with thirty two teachers chosen through random sampling. Data yielded little evidence of sustained dialogue between teachers and clergy on issues related to the religious orientation of Catholic schools. Although there were some similarities in the teachers' and priests' perceptions of the religious dimension of the mission of Catholic schools, there was a considerable variation in their perceptions of priorities for these schools. Some of these differences could be linked to teachers' individual relationships with the institutional Catholic Church. Teachers and priests were found to differ significantly in their understanding of the effectiveness of Catholic secondary schools. The study also found that ecclesiastical language used to describe the mission of Catholic schools is not always understood by teachers who work principally out of an educational context. Moreover, the study found that relationships between teachers and clergy were often hindered by poor communication, lack of clarity with regard to roles and expectations and very different perceptions of the structures and practice of authority. Many teachers believed that clergy were 'out of touch' and unrealistic in their expectations of schools and teachers. Many priests, on the other hand, considered that teachers had generally lost a sense of 'vocation' and religious motivation for their involvement in Catholic schools. Priests were generally more interested in forming partnerships with schools than were teachers in forming partnerships with parish communities. The perception that secondary school communities did not relate to parishes as well as their primary counterparts was widespread among clergy. This study makes several recommendations for the improvement of communication and dialogue between teachers and priests. It also recommends that similar research be carried out in dioceses where the parish-school authority structure differs. As part of this study the initial findings were presented to a significant gathering of clergy and school principals. The resulting discussion led to the proposal of strategies for improvement in communication and partnership. In this way the applied research in the study became an agency of change itself, working in the direction of a better culture of communication and collaboration regarding the religious mission of Catholic schools.

Turnham, Margaret H. "Roman Catholic revivalism : a study of the area that became the diocese of Middlesbrough 1779-1992." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2012. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/12539/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to provide a grassroots study of the diocese of Middlesbrough (1779-1992), in order to contribute to the history of the English Catholic community since it emerged from the Penal Times. Secondly, it is an examination of the manifestation of revivalism and renewal in Catholic devotional practice. The geographical extent of the study covers an area of Yorkshire with a strong recusant history, and that period has been well-served in Catholic historiography. However, writing on the period following the easing of the Penal Laws on Catholics and into the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is remarkable for the paucity of references to the diocese and the area that it covers. Therefore this study sheds light upon a particular Catholic community that has been largely invisible to historians. Although the Catholic community itself might appear to be invisible, the devotional practice within it offers many insights, such as the extent to which the social culture influenced the practice of faith. Therefore it teases out and examines the changing nature of devotional practice, and compares it to aspects of Evangelical revivalism that provided the surrounding religious culture. It also examines the influences that came to bear upon the community itself, assessing their importance in the revival and renewal of faith of the people within it. By examining the history of Catholic devotional practice in this area of Yorkshire, it comes to the conclusion that revivalism and renewal are integral elements in Catholic devotion and as a result Catholics and Evangelicals have more in common with each other than their adherents have been ready to acknowledge.

Fenchak, Richard J. "The experience of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond with ESEA Title I, April 1965--December 1976." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50016.

Full text
Abstract:
Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 was envisioned as a way to improve society by helping to equalize educational opportunities for economically and educationally deprived school children. The law provided for students in nonpublic schools to receive services commensurate with those received by their public school counterparts. This dissertation describes and analyzes the implementation of Title I of ESEA and amendments, in the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, Virginia, from April 1965 through December 1976. The implementation of Title I in diocesan schools resulted in a conflict between church and state. An historical study in church-state relations, this study provides documentation of the conflict and a view of the issues, events and results. Positions of some officials of the Richmond diocese, the Virginia Department of Education, the U.S. Office of Education, and the U.S. Catholic Conference are presented. Three chronological phases of Title I implementation between April 1965 and December 1976 are identified. Efforts of diocesan officials to secure Title I services for children in schools of the diocese varied in concert with events and issues and the personalities of the leaders throughout the time frame. The study documents that the amounts of services parochial school children received were determined, to a large extent, by external factors not under the control of the Richmond diocesan staff. The issues involving the implementation of Title I (now Chapter I, ECIA) remain unresolved. The dissertation suggests the need for future study regarding the implementation of Title I for the period following December 1976. A number of general hypotheses about church and state relationships; about administrative processes in state, federal, and church bureaucracies; and about leadership emerged from the study. These generalizations are presented as empirical propositions.

No final do sÃc.
The Catholic Church, in the course of its history, intended and implemented projects that make feasible his maintenance in the power in all the social fields: political, economical, cultural and education. We will give emphasis to the education, which action is oriented for the formation of intellectual elite that was defending the ideals of this institution. In the end of the nineteenth century, with the break of the ecclesiastical patronage and the advent of new churches disputing the Brazilian territory, the Church starts to be concerned by a more conservative formation, attempting to stop the demonstrations of a popular Catholicism that were appearing in Brazil. Seminars and schools were created all over Brazil, with the catholic religion spreading goal, by means of the Brazilian education romanizing process. This work attempts to ally the themes about religion and education, dealing with the Catholic Church actions about the Creation of the Diocese in Crato and the Diocesan College in order to undertake the project that made feasible the maintenance of catholic power. The central objective is to analyze this process, aiming to understand the sociocultural role fulfilled by this educational institution in Crato city. Along his history, Crato was strongly orientated by the Catholic religion which imprints its presence since the Priest Ibiapina arrival and his charity institutions. The Catholic Church activity on Crato reflects the intellectualsâ formation that later defended this institution in several fronts, for instance the diocese host contest against Juazeiroâs Priest CÃcero. In fact, the study of the religion and history of education in the Cearà will serve as theoretical outline to reaffirm the power of Catholic Institution.

The Church has its origin, source and fullness in Trinitarian pericorese. The inner movement of divine communion is overflowing with life. The Church is involved in the creative and saving mission of God. This ecclesiological perspective was deepened and assumed in the Second Vatican Council. This research portrays a reading of the missionary nature of the Church in the Diocese of Coari. It points out three facets taken over and built during its fifty years of evangelization: ecclesiology, sociopastoral action and missionary life as evangelizing and pastoral reflection. The primary sources are the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium, the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes and the Ad Gentes Decree. The bibliographical sources, the texts of the Magisterium and the Tradition are based and help to indicate the perspectives of the mission of the Local Church and its inspirations for the communion of the People of God. The diocese is missionary and continues its construction. You always need to update your evangelizing action. Installed in the ambience of the traditional Amazonian culture, the presence of urban culture has a strong presence. Diocesanism invites us to think and update our mission in order to renew ourselves permanently as a Missionary Church

This paper explore some issues experienced within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santo André, located in the region known as the largest industrial park of Latin America, ABC Paulista, at the metropolitan area of the city of Sao Paulo, between 1964 and 1980, period of Civil-Military Dictatorship in Brazil. For this analysis, we considered social initiatives discussed, above all, from the Second Vatican Council, and with more vehemence, in Latin America, in the meetings of the Episcopal Conferences of Medellin, 1968, and Puebla, 1979. Based on actions promoted by Don Jorge Marcos de Oliveira and Don Claudio Hummes, we have tried to go through important historical moments about the struggle of the workers of the region and the support offered by the Catholic Church, through its movements, in a period of economic recession, social problems, political repression and intolerance by the Brazilian State. To understand this context, we get support on historical and critical reading about the period, documents that retains vestiges of that time, subject who lived their experiences that time and pastoral guidance documents from the Catholic Church The Don Jorge Marcos de Oliveira and Don Claudio Hummes initiatives influenced the actions of the working class in ABC Paulista and participated in the process of reorganization of labor unions in the late 1970’s, resulting in big strike movements that, therefore, reflected in the process of political opening

Some of these differences could be linked to teachers' individual relationships with the institutional Catholic Church.;Teachers and priests were found to differ significantly in their understanding of the effectiveness of Catholic secondary schools.

This study aims at discussing the educational action in the Catholic-based Black movement in Brazil. The temporal and spatial boundaries are between 1988 and 2000 at the Archbishop of Duque de Caxias and its parish in São João de Meriti, both located at Baixada Fluminense in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, The choice of the year 1988 is due to the chief role played by the collective actors during the National Confederation of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) Fraternity Campaign in 1988, year of the centennial anniversary of Slavery Abolition in Brazil. The main source of research the diocesan journal Pilar, published in Duque de Caxias since 1990 showed that, during the decade studied, the Catholic-based Black movement operated on formative practices which sought to achieve Black awareness on both secular and clerical world. The social movements join the political-formative intentionality of the project of transformation of realities and, in this sense, the construction of knowledge operates for the actors emancipation. The anti-racist struggle which still affects social and cultural assets undertook an anti-hegemonic action both inside and outside the Catholic Church, as analyzed here in the light of the journal Pilar.

Abstract:
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research study addresses the assessment of the role of the Roman Catholic Church in addressing poverty within the Diocese of Lindi in Southern Tanzania. The study is interested in assessing whether the Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Lindi is fulfilling its mandated role of diakonia – the ministry of service, philanthropy (initiatives for communal good focusing on excellence of human life), and Christian love to ones neighbor and its role, commitment and application within the Diocese. In addition, this research will focus on the assessment of the fulfillment of the diocese‟s diaconal role of empowering the rural poor to “develop their capacity and skills so that they become competent decision makers with their confidence to act on their choices” (Roy and Hartigan 2008:67). In this study, efforts are made to study poverty from the reality experienced by the poor in the Diocese of Lindi. The component themes in this research study are: - The research design of this study and the literature review; relative to Diakonia; Catholic Social Teaching of the Roman Catholic Church; and Bryant Myers‟ framework for Transformational Development. - The experience of poverty, diakonia, Catholic social teaching and transformational development by the respondents, with specific reference to the selected parishes in the Diocese of Lindi. - A reflection of the reality of poverty from what emerged in literature with empirical qualitative research that is conducted among the poor. - This research study suggests a model of Diakonia, which is contextual, relevant and liberating. Focusing on the Scriptures, the social teachings of the Church, the literature and listening to the poor during interview process, this research proposes that the Diocese of Lindi implement a model consistence with Diakonia that takes the following seriously: 1. The role of the church is mandated to carry out as it ministers to the poor in deed and word, guided by Christian love, to enable the poor to lead a better life (Pieterse 2001:111). Also, an African worldview1, which focuses on communal and systemic approaches to life and its problems. 2. The Roman Catholic Church deals with social, economic and political issues (Zalot and Guevin 2008:46). Socio-economic and political dimensions of life, with the recognition that poverty is structural and if the problems of the poor are to be dealt with effectively, the socio-economic and political structures are also to be addressed and transformed. 3. The reflection of concern for seeking positive change in the whole of human life, socially and spiritually (Myers 1999:3, 14). The poor, as living human documents, should not only be read and interpreted, but also taken seriously and regarded as central to the process of community development. The poor are to play the central role in the transformation of society. They are to be involved in the “functional priesthood of all believers” (Stevenson-Moessner 2005:21). The local churches of the Diocese must take seriously the socio-economic and political structures that perpetuate poverty and other injustices in society. The proposed model of Diakonia described herein is offered as a contribution in the direction of community development.
