Abstract:
The research aims to collect historical information on the sanctuaries of the Lviv Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine that are dedicated to the Persons of the Holy Trinity (or the Divine mystery), the Blessed Virgin Mary, saints, and blesseds. The study applies a comprehensive approach using methods of scientific analysis, systematisation and generalisation, and a combination of historical, cultural and art historical methods to provide a broader understanding of the topic. This research considers twenty sanctuaries of the Lviv Archdiocese that were officially proclaimed from June 13, 1995, to June 10, 2020, as well as the ancient Sanctuary of the Mother of God Merciful and God of Mercy. It has been established that all sanctuaries of the Lviv Archdiocese are diocesan. The study analyzed more than fifty publications. The scientific novelty of the results obtained is a comprehensive analysis of historical information about the sanctuaries of the Lviv Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine. The sanctuaries of the Lviv Archdiocese in Ukraine require further historical, cultural, and art historical research that will complement previous publications.

Abstract:
Under The Influence of Enlightenment ideals of rational administration and cameralist notions of increasing the productivity and welfare of the populace, Joseph II and his ministers embarked on an aggressive program of reform for the Habsburg monarchy in the late eighteenth century. Their view as to what needed change was wide-ranging, but among their chief concerns was the desire to restructure the relationship between the Catholic church and Austrian society. As the largest and most powerful religious denomination in the Habsburg monarchy, the Catholic church possessed immense human and material resources, which could possibly be exploited to benefit the Austrian people and state. For Joseph II, the process whereby Catholicism could best be put to use in Austrian society necessarily involved seizing partial administrative control over the Catholic church. The Catholic church, he believed, did not distribute material and moral benefit to the Austrian people evenly, and changing this situation required the active intervention of the Austrian government.

Abstract:
The article is focusing its analysis on the Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni Church (the Our Lady of Good Health Church) in Medan, North Sumatra. The church describes and introduces itself as ‘Gereja Pewarta’ (an Evangelizing Church). At first sight, however, this Catholic church gives an impression of a Buddhist or Hindu temple, due to its construction. But it is rich in and full of traditional Catholic symbols. It presents itself in two meanings, viz., as the people of God and the sacred place for worship. The popularly called Velangkanni Church in the Archdiocese of Medan with all its richness, basically wants to proclaim Jesus Christ and to promote the devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, not merely a place of prayer or worship.

Abstract:
Sources for the History of the Armenian Catholic Church in Galicia in the Viennese Collections The article is a report from a query that took place in March 2019. The author discusses sources that relate to the history of the Armenian Catholic Church in Galicia (i.e. the Archdiocese of Lwów, Lemberg) found in the Austrian State Archives (Österreichisches Staatsarchiv) and in the Library of the Mechitharist Congregation (Bibliothek des Mechitharistenklosters) in Vienna. The collections contain a wealth of sources on the history of the Church and the Armenians living in Poland on the territories acquired in 1772 by the Austrian Empire, and until now only some of them have been used in the scientific literature. They present the relations of the central offices of the Habsburg monarchy with the Galician Armenians (who, in the overwhelming majority, were Catholics), and the role of this minority in the provincial administration. The sources also denote the importance of the religious congregation of Mechitarists in the life of the Armenian Catholic Archdiocese of Lwów. Many future priests learnt the Armenian language and Armenian liturgy at the Viennese religious secondary school (gymnasium) led by Mechitarists, and later a number of them joined the congregation. The book of religious professions, the letters and personal files, which mention a great number of Galician names, not only of Armenian descent (like archbishop Samuel Cyryl Stefanowicz or Rev. Dominik Barącz), but also of Polish origin serve as evidence of the aforementioned bond.

Abstract:
The present study aims to present the situation of the Greek-Catholic community in Bucharest in the first decades of the 20th Century, starting from the reports that Marius Theodorian-Carada sent to the Holy See at that time. As a convert to Greek Catholicism in 1908, Theodorian-Carada showed an increased interest in the situation of the Greek Catholic believers in Bucharest during the interwar period, more precisely after the parish of Saint Basil the Great had been placed under the authority of the Greek- Catholic Archdiocese of Blaj. The present paper covers the intellectual profile of the convert, his continuous activism for the cause of the union of the Orthodox Church in Romania with the Catholic Church and, above all, the solutions that Theodorian- Carada proposed in response to the most urgent problems that the Romanian Greek Catholic Church was facing at that time. Last but not least, our study sheds light, based on archival documents, on the perspective that the Nunciature from Bucharest and the Greek- Catholic hierarchy had on the issues raised. Abstract:
e4527077This article aims to understand factors that demonstrate the position of the Catholic Church in the debate on public and private freedom of teaching present in the Law of Directives and Bases of Education (LDB) of 1961. The treatment of the data was made by historical analysis and of content using the weekly printed newspaper O Arquidiocesano as a source, available for consultation at the Ecclesiastical Archive of the Archdiocese of Mariana. The discursive strategies of the Church were analyzed through the press in the section from 1959, the year the newspaper was created, until 1964, framing movements prior to the enactment of the LDB and its echoes until the civil-military coup. The presence of Catholicism in Brazil, Mariana's history and the strength of religion in the specified framework are elements explored to enrich the debate about public and private education and the democratization of education. In addition, in order to deepen the view of the press as a source and/or scientific object within the Humanities, a quick exhibition of works in the area is carried out. As a result of the research, the analysis of the five newspaper articles related to the 1961 LDB within the specified framework revealed the position of the official body of the Archdiocese of Mariana, which considered the ideal of freedom of teaching present in the LDB as a means to meet the aspirations of private schools. Keywords: LDB, Public and private in education, Press, Catholic church.ReferencesAMARAL, Alexandre Gonçalves do. Abstract:
The relief of Belgian refugees in Britain is an emerging area of study in the history of the First World War. About 250,000 Belgian refugees came to Great Britain, and at least 19,000 refugees came to Scotland, with the majority hosted in Glasgow. While relief efforts in Scotland were co-ordinated and led by the Glasgow Corporation, the Catholic Church also played a significant role in the day-to-day lives of refugees who lived in the city. This article examines the Archdiocese of Glasgow's assistance of Belgian refugees during the war. It considers first the Catholic Church's stance towards the War and the relief of Belgian refugees. The article then outlines the important role the Church played in providing accommodation, education and religious ministry to Belgian refugees in Glasgow. It does this by tracing the work of the clergy and by examining popular opinion in Catholic media. The article establishes that the Church and the Catholic community regarded the relief and reception of Belgian refugees as an act of religious solidarity.

Abstract:
The 4th Synod of the Warsaw Archdioceses was debating during the five-year period, between 19th March 1998 and 19th March 2003 when the Warsaw Church had been run by the primate of Poland, cardinal Joseph Glemp. He proposed, summoned and carried out the synod and promulgated its resolutions. The initiative of summoning the synod was connected with the need for overall renewal of the religious and moral life of the Warsaw archdiocese. The synod’s deliberations and its resolutions were to cause the betterment of the organization and functioning of administrative and pastoral apparatus in the archdiocese, to normalize the many issues concerning the church and religious life, as well as to improve the laity and clergy’s religious, social and moral level. To achieve, a wide representation of clergy, catholic laity and monks were engaged. The synodical resolutions with its jurisdictional and pastoral nature are signified by strong setting in the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, the Canon Law, the documents of the Holy See and John Paul II, as well as by the resolutions of the Second Polish Plenary Second and the instructions of the Conference of the Polish Episcopate. At the same time they refer to the tradition of the Warsaw archdiocese and remain fully opened for the “tomorrow” of the Church, evangelizing and pastoral objective. Furthermore they undertake, organize and regulate many difficult pastoral issues. Thus the synodical legislator contributed to the renewal, revival and activation of the church and administrative structures of the archdioceses, so they could serve to various pastoral, church and administrative assignments.

Abstract:
After a brief ban in 1848–1852, the Society of Jesus restored its activities in the Lviv Archdiocese. The order not only returned to its centers in Ternopil and Lviv during the second half of the 19th century, but also intensified missionary activity in Stanislaviv, Chernivtsi and Kolomyia, where it managed to collect donations and, with the help of local authorities, successfully organize the construction of three large churches. The article notes, that at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Jesuits received an invitation from Lviv Archbishop Józef Bilczewski to start a mission to Stryi, because the Catholic clergy, together with the city authorities, were interested in building of a new large church for the city, because the presence of one temple was not enough to properly meet the spiritual needs of the population with the Latin rite. The Society of Jesus had two tasks: to organize the collection of donations and the construction of the temple, as well as to engage in pastoral work, primarily among local workers. Such a specific direction of spiritual work was connected with the spread of socialist ideas among the working class in Galicia, and Catholic Church had to respond to contemporary social problems, especially since socialist slogans contained anti-clerical elements. The Society of Jesus arrived in the city in January 1904, but at the end of October 1905, the leadership of the order decided to end the mission. The article examines the stay of the Society of Jesus in Stryi at that time, highlights the activities of the Jesuits in the city. Abstract:
This article recreates the everyday experiences of rural Catholics in Mexico during the Church–State crisis of the 1920s and the cristero revolt (1926–9) against Mexico's post-revolutionary regime. Focusing on the archdiocese of Michoacán in western Mexico, the article contends that the 1920s should be viewed not only as a period of political tension between Church and State, but as a period of attempted cultural revolution when the very beliefs of Mexican Catholics were under attack. It is then argued that the behaviour of many Catholics during the cristero revolt is best described not as overt counter-revolutionism, but as defensive cultural and spiritual resistance designed to thwart the state's secularising aims by reaffirming and reproducing proscribed Catholic rituals and practices in collaboration with the parish clergy. The article then examines Catholic strategies of resistance during the cristero revolt and their consequences, above all the parochialisation and laicisation of the Church.

Abstract:
The article examines the architectural features of buildings and spaces in the largest Roman Catholic educational institutions on the terrains of modern Ukraine; highlights and analyzes the principles underlying the architecture formation of theological educational institution of the Roman Catholic Church; determines the conception of architectural and space-planning organization of separate sacred, academic, administrative, and household buildings, recreational, entertainment, and sports spaces on the campus territory of theological educational institutions of the Roman Catholic Church; outlines the practical recommendations for project designers. Roman Catholic educational institutions in Ukraine are represented by the range of buildings and complexes in Western, Central, and Southern Ukraine. The most accomplished from the view point of its architectural and space-planning decisions is the complex of Major Theological Seminary of Lviv Archdiocese and Theological Institute in Briukhovychi village near Lviv. Taking into account the architecture of the mentioned complex and the complex of Lviv Theological Seminary of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the article distinguishes the major principles and foregrounds the set of practical recommendations concerning project design of theological educational institution of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine. In particular, the architecture development of theological educational institution of the Roman Catholic Church is based on the following principles: confessionalism and ecumenism; multi-education; sacredness; secularism; inclusiveness; flexibility and mobility; traditionalism and modernism. Also, as per the outlined architectural and space-planning conception, theological multi-educational center as an architectural complex is the combination of theological and educational departments of all levels of theological education in Ukraine and forms the uniform architectural ensemble, the main ideological and visual object of which is a temple. The specified principles and conception will be useful for future project designers during the process of determining architectural and space-planning organization of such an ideologically and functionally difficult object as theological educational institution (or center) of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine, which will foster creation of new qualitative projects and construction of modern institutions of theological education of the Roman Catholic Church.

Abstract:
Rufino J. Santos was labeled as a conservative who resisted change, especially during the last half of his stewardship as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Manila. In an era when the Catholic world was beset by the liturgical revival movement and other social movements of the 1960s, Santos strived to preserve his role as a Church militant while the Philippine ecclesiastical hierarchy veered towards making the Catholic Church responsive to the contemporary social ills. The present study uses the historical method framed by Arnold Toynbee’s Challenge and Response theory to discuss, narrate, and analyze how the first Filipino Cardinal preserved the unity and tradition of pre-Vatican II ideals while ironically, being an active participant in the four Vatican II Council Sessions. This study contextualizes how Santos’ adherence to unity and uniformity was driven by his intent to avoid confusion among the priests and the laity and how this intent steered him to spearhead the introduction of the Misa ng Bayan, the first Tagalog translation of the Holy Mass in 1966, as he defied his critics, and ultimately brought the Philippines into the threshold of change that Vatican II envisioned.

Abstract:
This study aims to explore how the implementation of Musical Inculturation takes place during Mass in the Catholic Churches within the Tomohon archdiocese. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data for this research is derived from interviews, photographs, and audio as well as video recordings. The theoretical framework encompasses musicology, music psychology, theology, ethnomusicology, and the Theory of PML, asserting that inculturation involves several stages, including translation, transition, adaptation, and the creation of new elements. The study substantiates that Inculturation in the Tomohon Archdiocese is widely embraced by the congregation, enhancing their faith, particularly during liturgical celebrations of the Mass. The infusion of culture into the liturgy deepens the congregation's connection with the divine, and according to the research findings and interviews with the congregation, it is evident that the presence of enculturated music in the Church has heightened the meaning of liturgical celebrations for the congregation. The enthusiasm among the congregation is notably high, and there is a consistent longing for the divine presence. The congregation expresses joy as the profound values of culture are accorded a special place in the Mass.

Abstract:
The Archdiocese of Jakarta, Indonesia's oldest diocese with a dynamic megapolitan population, must be proactive and willing to take risks in order to meet the needs of Catholics and fulfill its mission to the general public. With 37 parishes and a diverse parishioner population, Catholic priests encounter a variety of problems in carrying out the church's mission. A proactive approach and the willingness to take risks can boost organizational success. There has been no previous research on the Roman Catholic church with the concept of entrepreneurship, hence this study fills a research gap in terms of entrepreneurship theory and context in religious organizations. Using the framework of entrepreneurial proactiveness and entrepreneurial risk taking, in-depth interviews with 19 parish priests revealed that 19 parish priests applied entrepreneurial concepts to their ministry work. This study adds to the academic side of entrepreneurship in the context of religious non-profit organizations and offers practical guidance to NPO managers who are in a similar scenario.

Abstract:
This research was motivated by the Covid-19 pandemic that struck the world from March 2020 until today. This pandemic has changed the religious ritual of the Catholic religion around the world from the model of Mass congregation at church to online mass congregation at their homes. This mass congregation service at home indeed changed social interaction patterns. This research aims to investigate whether people's piety and social solidarity also changed with the mass service at home. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods during the last five months, this research finally found that, on the contrary, people's piety and social solidarity improved. It turns out that they are far more religious in their lives and very care about the catholic follower's life and other religious believers. This research has also made the church conduct paradigm reform in serving the people. The church has conducted a new kind of service in this New Normal era, i.e., Profilingcustomers. The church has studied their served people thoroughly. How is their profile, what do they need, and their expectation? The church has set customer focus, friendly, consistent, and continuous improvement. It is an effort to establish the people to the new performance style. The church is expected to keep on formulating new ways to overcome the shock of appreciation of faith due to this pandemic. In life, faith always has ups and downs; that is a portrait of human nature. This era is uncertain, but people will survive and live on. We are looking at the new face of the church, especially regarding piety and social solidarity of the people.

Abstract:
AbstractScholars have acknowledged that there is a systemic aspect to Catholic clerical sex abuse that acts as a type of grammar structuring behaviors and responses. Feminist critics in particular stress the patriarchal nature of the abuse that connects bishops, priests, and boys together. This essay argues that in addition to public systems dominated by men, there are also private structures that facilitate abuse. Using the extensive primary documentation assembled by BishopAccountability.org, I focus on the space of the home and the unique orientations of mothers and fathers to better understand the dynamics of clerical sex abuse in the American Catholic church. The essay begins with the abuse of a Milwaukee priest who tormented his parishioners from 1945 until his forced “retirement” in 1970. Drawing on themes found in this case, I examine other abuse narratives—focusing on how the Catholic understanding of alter Christus and mid-twentieth-century gender roles made the “good Catholic home” a particularly vulnerable place for abuse. Since public and private systems overlap, it is essential that the domestic aspects of clergy sex abuse also receive a full analysis.

This paper aims to illustrate a difficult period in the history of the Romanian Church United with Rome, namely: the evolution of the Greek Catholic Diocese of Cluj-Gherla in the first two months after the split of Transylvania, as a result of the Vienna Diktat. The purpose of this article is to highlight the consequences that the entry of North-West Transylvania into Hungary had on the Greek Catholic Diocese of Cluj-Gherla; what changes the new administration brings to the United Church. After highlighting the general framework (status, economic situation, the attempt to subordinate the greek-catholic dioceses to the Archdiocese of Esztergom, as well as the pressure on the Greek Catholic believers to change their denomination), the activity of bishop Iuliu Hossu is also presented. Emphasis will be placed on the bishop’s efforts and attempts to stop the abuses of the new authority on the Romanian population, his attempts to mediate conflicts between Romanian and Hungarian leaders, and last but not least the efforts made to manage the administration of the Greek Catholic Diocese in the new political context. The article also presents the situation of educational institutions under the auspices of the United Diocese of Cluj-Gherla, and the difficulties they face as a result of changes in the education system.

Abstract:
AbstractThroughout the second half of the twentieth century, Latin America became something of a dumping ground for U.S. priests suspected of sexual abuse, with north-to-south clerical transfers sending predatory priests to countries where pedophilia did not exist in any kind of ontological sense. This article, in response, engages the case of Father David Roney of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota. After a career of accusations and payouts, with Roney entering and exiting Church-mandated therapy programs, Bishop Raymond Lucker retired this notoriously predatory priest to rural Guatemala in 1994. By placing Roney beyond the reach of psychiatrists, psychologists, and spiritual directors, the Roman Catholic Church leveraged a psychological and juridical difference between two geographical settings in order to render the pedophilia of this priest effectively non-existent, thereby insulating itself from further reputational damage and additional litigation. Given that the Roman Catholic Church has long been an empirical point of reference for studies of subject formation—from pastoralism and mysticism to ritual and the confession—this article adds that the Church also provides ample evidence of an opposite process: of unmaking people.

This article aims to examine the implementation of Catholic religious education in the Church (Parish) for Catholic students who attend public schools, and do not receive Catholic religious education because there are no Catholic teachers who teach in public schools at the elementary, junior high, high school and vocational school levels. The research was conducted on 47 Catholic churches that carry out Catholic religious education for Catholic students studying in public schools in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta with 78 respondents. The finding is that quite some public schools at the elementary, junior high, high school, and vocational levels with 15 students and above do not receive Catholic teaching in their schools because there are no Catholic religious teachers who teach at these schools. The main problem of this research is: can efforts to improve the quality of Catholic religious education for public students in the Catholic Church in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta overcome the problem of the lack of Catholic religious teachers teaching in public schools?. Efforts to improve the quality of the implementation of Catholic religious education for public students carried out in the Catholic Church have a positive impact on fostering Catholic students and in fulfilling the obligations of academic demands to get the value of Catholic religious education and character in public schools. This research recommends the importance of improving the quality of Catholic religious education for public students in the Church; such as coaching for Catholic Religion teachers who teach in the church and the assessment process so that it is by the assessment standards in the applicable curriculum. For this reason, it is important to collaborate with the Directorate General of Catholic Guidance at the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia to prepare a budget for the development of Catholic religious teachers/catechists who teach Catholic students attending public schools. And the importance of good planning by the Directorate General of Catholic Guidance at the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia and the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta for the formation of Catholic Religion teachers in public schools. In addition, optimal efforts and cooperation are needed for the Catholic Community Service Regional Office of the Ministry of Religion of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta with the Jakarta Archdiocese Catechetical Commission, the role of family/Parents, so that the implementation of Catholic teaching for public students at 47 churches/parishes in DKI Jakarta can be implemented. This study discusses, narrates, and analyzes how Archbishop Rufino Santos continued the work started by the country’s first native Archbishop of Manila, Gabriel M. Reyes, in steering the archbishopric to attain its full spiritual maturity. The research used the historical method guided by Arnold Toynbee’s Challenge and Response Theory identifying the Archbishop of Manila as the “creative personality” whose responses to the challenges of the post-war Archdiocese of Manila formed a “creative minority” who helped him respond to the challenges during his stewardship. As the "creative personality," Archbishop Santos led a series of responses that began to stir the social awakening of the Catholic Church in the Philippines to make it responsive to the social issues affecting the Filipinos. These responses allowed Archbishop Santos to elevate the Catholic Action movement to include socio-political concerns, thereby awakening the laity's socio-political consciousness and linking this to their Filipino Catholic identity.

In many countries today, alcoholism is becoming an increasingly common problem, the number of alcoholics is increasing, and the disease occurs in all professions and occupations. Therefore, it is important to talk about the increasing presence of alcoholism not only among lay believers but also among the clergy of the Catholic Church. The aim of this paper is to point out the causes of alcohol addiction and the consequences of alcoholism on the life and work of priests from the area of the Đakovo-Osijek Archdiocese. Based on the results of qualitative-quantitative research conducted using a survey questionnaire (9 priests), sampled using the »snowball« technique, this paper will, for the first time, talk about a problem that has not been discussed in the Croatian scientific community. The conducted research points to stressful events, loneliness, and mis-understanding of superiors and the environment as the main causes of alcoholism among priests.

Abstract:
Abstract This article studies the attempts of Archbishop Alfonso Carrillo y Acuña to reform the Archdiocese of Toledo. In particular, I will focus on the Provincial Council of Aranda (1473), which addressed issues like priestly concubinage, absenteeism of priests from their parishes and the level of education of the clergy. Though the Council’s constitutions certainly contain reformative exhortations, it is not so clear that Carrillo convened the Council out of pastoral concerns exclusively. Contrarily, there are reasons to believe the Archbishop mainly sought to assure his political position in the midst of the conflict for the Castilian succession. Overall, scholarship has greatly studied Carrillo’s political deeds, but usually not in relation to the pastoral and reformative enterprises simultaneously undertaken by the Archbishop. This article aims to start filling this gap, linking those two aspects and demonstrating to what extent the latter was dependent on the former. Moreover, this article will bring more clarity on the pastoral turn of the Archbishops of Toledo in the Late Middle Ages. Though Cisneros is recognized for his pastoral leadership and acknowledged as the great promoter of Church reform in Castile, all this already started before. I intend to clarify when and how it happened.

Abstract:
Since the turn of the twenty-first century, the rapid growth of Peru’s extractive industries has unleashed diverse forms of political resistance to an economic system dependent on ecological destruction and human harm. In the central highlands of Peru, a Catholic scientific project based out of the Archdiocese of Huancayo undertook six years of research on heavy-metal contamination in the Mantaro Valley. This included lead-exposure studies in the notoriously polluted city of La Oroya, home to the country’s largest polymetallic smelter. How did the Catholic Church become an apt institution for the production of science in this region? Drawing on fieldwork with the Revive the Mantaro Project, this article conceptualizes the integration of religious and scientific practitioners and practices and the political landscape that necessitated, shaped, and limited them. Technocratic governance and anti-leftist sentiments made science a suitable political idiom for the Catholic Church to enact its ethos of abundance and demand the legitimacy of life beyond bare life. A state of endemic corruption and epistemic mistrust also obliged Catholic accompaniment to scientific practices to generate trust for the researchers and to provide ethical credibility as their knowledge entered the fray of national mining politics. Ultimately contending with entrenched systems of power, the Revive the Mantaro Project’s significance extended beyond political efficacy; its practices enacted a world of democracy, rights, and legal protections not yet of this world.

Abstract:
The text is a result of a research project titled “The significance of parish-distributed press for the evangelization and formation activities of the Szczecin-Kamień Church (2016–2020).” The project was realized by members of the Department of Media Evangelism of the Institute of Journalism as part of the basic statutory activity of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jesuit University Ignatianum in Cracow. Indicating the need for this research, it is worth noting that already several years ago, the Archdiocesan Archives in Szczecin planned a pastoral study on the topic of “Libraries and parish press in the Szczecin‑Kamień Archdiocese,” which was not implemented. The purpose of this study is to find an answer to the question of whether evangelization and formation of the Niedziela Catholic weekly readers is carried out through the message. The presentation of the 2016–2020 editions of the Szczecin-Kamień Niedziela delivers a positive answer: yes, by learning the thoughts and facts provided, the faithful of the archdiocese were able to engage more consciously and with greater commitment in the works of evangelization and formation that applied to them. The first part of the study is an explanation of what evangelization and formation activities that are mandatory for Catholics consist of and the necessity of using the means of social communication to carry out these activities. The second part describes content filling the eight pages of the weekly message addressed to the Roman Catholic Church on the Oder and Baltic were filled. The message included the teaching of the diocesan bishop, descriptions of the ways in which the faithful engage liturgically, accounts of archdiocesan and parish activities, in addition to the social teaching of August Cardinal Hlond and Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński. The third part of the article juxtaposes elements that make up evangelization and formation activities with content directed to Catholics in the weekly paper distributed in parishes. In this way, it was shown that each reader could not only witness the process of evangelization and formation taking place in the Szczecin-Kamień Archdiocese, but also get involved in it.

Abstract:
<p>Christianity has heralded a phase of religion that thrives on mission – the mandate to ‘evangelize’ or reach out to people who do not know Jesus Christ, his divinity and work of salvation. By the twentieth century when the global community began to grapple with the realities of modernity – part of which was a corresponding rise of immorality and loss of religious identity, even among traditionally Christian societies – the strategy of ‘mission’ changed to accommodate new ways of transmitting the word of God that would pierce the hearts of humans. In this information regime which offers the print, broadcast and social media platforms the impact of these on the new evangelisation is visible. The Pentecostal churches which are offshoots of the Catholic and Protestant churches have swiftly embraced this mass communication – aided technique for achieving mission thereby attracting unprecedented followership. The Catholic Church - although it imposes a strong, virile and seemingly unshaken image – is losing a huge number of its estimated one billion population, and if its media culture on mission does not change it would be a drawback. Drawing on the growing body of work which compares Catholic approach with Pentecostal mission strategy, the paper examines this distinction, and analyses the approach to the use of the media as a strategy of ‘mission’ in the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos – where Catholicism started in Northern Nigeria. Based on the analysis of mass media use in the Archdiocese, this paper argues that its communication strategy is, undoubtedly, driving the new evangelisation but needs to expand its media infrastructure for optimum results. The paper suggests that ‘mission’ can be strengthened through a robust and media-centred strategy.</p>

This article explores Umpasa and umpama of Batak Toba culture as a means of catechesim within Chatolic curches. The work uses qualitative methods with observation, interview and documentation. Descriptive analysis technique is employed based on the triangulation results of techniques and sources. The study targeted 20 adults, 3 Batak Toba cultural practitioners, and 2 priests and bishops who were on the island of Samosir Lake Toba. The work suggests that churches that live and develop today are based on tradition. Tradition is meant to include everything (such as customs, beliefs, habits, teachings, and so on) that is downwardly inhereited. One of the traditions of Batak Toba that is still preserved to this day is umpasa and umpama. This tradition is considered wise because it is used for prayers, petitioning God, and giving advices. Umpasa or umpa has always been used in the teaching of the Medan Catholic Church to the community of Batak Toba in Samosir and its surroundings and has truly become a model of church catechesis, not only by the society of Batak Toba but also as a model for catechism. The work is based on church studies within the Archdiocese of Medan.

Abstract:
This article analyses the character of local religious practice in the archdiocese of Michoacán during Mexico'scristerorebellion, and explores the relationship between ‘official’ and ‘popular’ religion under persecution. In particular, it shows how the Catholic clergy and laity reconstructed the religious life at parish level in an attempt to mitigate the effects of the revolutionary state's campaigns against the Church. For a variety of reasons, the significance of such passive resistance to the state, and the complexity of the interaction between the ecclesiastical elite and the Catholic laity, tend to be downplayed in many existing accounts. Perhaps unsurprisingly, many historians see cristero violence as the most important response to religious persecution, and therefore study it to the exclusion of alternative, less visible, modes of resistance. As for the Church, the hierarchy's wranglings with the regime similarly tend to overshadow the labours of priests and their parishioners under persecution. But the full range of popular experiences has also been deliberately compressed for ideological reasons. Many Catholic writers, for instance, seek to exalt the Church by describing a persecution of mythical ferocity. While Calles is likened to Herod, Nero, or Diocletian, the clergy and laity comprise a uniform Church of martyrs designate in revolt against a godless state. To achieve this instructive vision, however, a few exemplary martyrs—such as Father Pro and Anacleto González Flores—are allowed to stand for the whole mass of priests and believers, in the same way that Edmund Campion is revered as the protomartyr of the Elizabethan persecution in England. As a result, a stereotypical but politically serviceable image of a monolithic Church is perpetuated, an image which was recently institutionalised by the canonisation of 25 ‘cristero’ martyrs in May 2000.

Abstract:
Shattered Faith is the story of Sheila Rauch Kennedy's marriage and divorce from Congressman Joe Kennedy, a member of one of the best known families in the United States of America. Married in 1979 in a Catholic Church, Mr Kennedy was a Catholic while Mrs Kennedy remained an Episcopalian. Twin sons were born in 1980 and baptised as Catholics, with godparents from both Christian churches. The marriage began to unravel when Mr Kennedy was elected to Congress. Separation in 1989 was followed by divorce because of ‘irreconcilable differences’. In 1993, Mrs Kennedy received notification from the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Boston, informing her of the petition lodged by her former husband to have the marriage declared null on the grounds of lack of due discretion of judgement (though whose lack of due discretion is not made clear). Shocked, and while willing to acknowledge that the marriage had failed (evidenced in a divorce), she could not accept that it had never existed as a sacrament.

Abstract:
On 20 May 1939 General Francisco Franco attended the solemn Te Deum service held at the royal church of Santa Barbara to celebrate the triumph of nationalist over republican Spain. Surrounded by the symbols of Spain's Catholic past, including the standard used by Don Juan of Austria at Lepanto, the general presented his “sword of victory” to Cardinal Gomá, archbishop of Toledo and primate of the Spanish church.1 The ceremony symbolized the close ties between church and state formed by three years of civil war. The new regime had given proof of its commitment to the church even before the conflict had ended, and the clergy now looked forward to the implementation of a full range of measures in education, culture, and the regulation of public morality, measures that had last been seen in Spain over a century before.2

Abstract:
This article presents educational issues in the Polish People’s Republic as presented in Primate Stefan Wyszyński’s personal notes (called pro memoria) from 1961. The major source of the study is a Stefan Wyszyński manuscript stored in the Archdiocese Archive in Gniezno. In the first part of the study, an outline of research into education in the Polish People’s Republic is presented, together with methodological issues. The second part is devoted to a brief summary of education against the ideological pressure exerted by the Communist authorities by 1961. The third part presents the characteristics of the source representing the basis of the study. The fourth part presents (in the light of Primate Wyszyński’s notes) the act on the development of education and upbringing from 1961, care and education institutions of the Roman Catholic Church, kindergartens managed by nuns and parishes, religious education, church secondary education, religious instruction, lower seminaries, higher seminaries, tertiary education and academic religious leadership.

Abstract:
Amid the current tension of interfaith life in Indonesia, the Semarang Archdiocese Church (KAS) is working to create a welcoming space for young people. Since 2014, KAS Church has organized an activity called “Kongres Persaudaraan Sejati”, which was later changed to “Srawung Persaudaraan Sejati Kaum Muda Lintas Agama” in 2018. This activity, which takes place every four years, aims to demonstrate the Catholic Church's involvement in upholding the value of pluralism, which is based on a culture of encounter or dialog. This idea of a culture of encounter was then enriched by the ideological model defended by Pope Francis in his encyclical Fratelli Tutti (2020). The document Fratelii Tutti (2020) contains a model for reflection on coexistence and the movement towards world peace. This article will explore the thought pattern of Pope Francis regarding the document Fratelli Tutti (2020) and find the contribution of this thought to the activity “Srawung Persaudaraan Sejati Kaum Muda Lintas Agama”.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the Church's position on the funeral rites that were practiced by the Peruvian Indigenous in the early colonial period. First, the author presents a brief description of the Andean funeral rite, most of the elements of which (the presence of extensive accompanying gifts, burial with subsequent access to the body for ritual purposes, etc.) directly contradicted the Christian doctrine and practice. The author distinguishes between two types of sources — reflecting the theoretical position and revealing its practical implementation. The theoretical provisions are reflected primarily in the materials of the first three Lima church councils, which were convened in 1551-52, 1567-68 and 1582-88. The practical implementation of these provisions is most clearly traced by the materials of the processes for the extirpation of idolatry among the Indigenous people, the peak of which fell on the XVII century. Most of these documents originate from the Archdiocese of Lima. The analysis of these sources shows that the following practices caused the greatest condemnation on the part of the Church: burials of the deceased outside church cemeteries and burials together with accompanying gifts (drinks, food, clothes, etc.). In addition, it can be stated that there are no significant discrepancies between the theory and practice in relation of the Church to Indigenous funeral rites, with the exception of that the burning of ancestral mummies, which has become a common practice, was not prescribed by the documentation of the Lima councils. In conclusion, the author concludes that the efforts of the Church to eradicate traditional rituals were partially successful, and some elements of the traditional Andean funeral rite were replaced by Christian ones.

Abstract:
Sudan is today a country self-defined as Islamic (97% of the population) and Arab. In this context the schools of the Catholic Church have played and play a relevant role in the instruction of the elites of the country and in the provision of education to the displaced and refugee communities (3.58 million persons of concern of UNHCR in 2016). This article studies the development of these schools and their change of role along the following historical periods: the part of the Turco-Egyptian rule that corresponds with the foundation of the first Catholic Schools and the work of the great promotor of education in Sudan, Daniel Comboni (1843-1881); the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium which meant their expansion (1898-1956); and the Independent Sudan where they mainly focused on the service to displaced and refugees (1956-2017). The article describes this evolution and the current situation based upon the revision of published bibliography and unpublished materials from the archives of the Education Office of the Archdiocese of Khartoum and of the Comboni Missionaries in Sudan, especially for the most recent periods.

Abstract:
In many Western countries, the Catholic Church (like several others) is currently suffering a vocations crisis. Australia is no exception. Each year, dioceses see more priests retire, die, or leave the priesthood than new ones are ordained. For this reason, it is becoming increasingly mission-critical for dioceses to understand better the vocational journeys of those men who do become priests. These are also, of course, groups of considerable sociological interest: what motivates them to do (and become) something so countercultural? This article presents the main findings from a qualitative research project exploring the vocational journeys of recently ordained (i.e., within the past ten years at the time of the study) priests in the Archdiocese of Sydney, New South Wales.

Abstract:
Belorussification is explained as the process of change of direction of thelocal Roman Catholic Church from Polish national to Belarussian. It aimsto becoming an independent Church as the religious standalone institutionon the area of the autonomous Republic of Belarus. In practice it primarilymeans the change of the language used in the local Church. It causes anopposition on the part of the faithful (mainly from the older generation)and the Union of Poles in Belarus. The dispute about belorussification incorporates political, identity, historicaland practical issues. The Synod of the Archdiocese of Minsk-Mohilev,Pinsk and Vitebsk in 2000 ordained both languages (Polish and Belarussian)as languages of the Roman Catholic Church in dioceses participating inthe synod in Belarus. It depends on priests’ decision in what language theycommunicate with faithful and celebrate the church liturgical services.Basically the priests want to fulfill their role as pastors and hence theychoose the language suitable to communicate with the faithful – Belarussianand even Russian, whereas Polish is used for prayers only where it isexplicitly mentioned. The choice made by them is not dictated by politicalorganizations, but it is the conscious and calculated decision consideringthe neeeds of the faithful, the political correctness and personal attitudetowards missionary work. The paper is an attempt to respond to the accusation of Roman Dzwonkowski,Ewa Golachowska and Zdzisław Winnicki who claim that the churchesat present have become a tool of belorussification of Poles, in particularchildren and teenagers, by the clergy which has come from Poland. Thesubject raised in this thesis aims at explaining the decision of the priestswho choose belorussification, by taking into account their perspective andthe historical-political context.

Abstract:
Charitable activities of the Catholic Church in Poland are carried out primarily at two levels: national church organizations, diocesan and religious, and at the level of less formalized parish organizations. The data show a relatively low percentage of people who are strongly involved in parish activities and in non-religious (social, charitable) affairs of the parish community. The first purpose of this paper is to indicate the socio-demographic features that characterize people who are socially engaged. The second aim is to search for model regularities indicating determinants of social activity of parishioners. We conducted the research in parishes of Lublin Archdiocese in 2020. The research sample was 1867 people, of whom 70% were women. The average age of the respondents was 54.31 years. We have selected predictors that characterise the participants of the non-religious activities in the parish. Referring to the theoretical model of social participation and the concept of social capital, we have indicated the factors that shape the pro-social attitudes of parish members.

Abstract:
The Ecclesiastical Province of Cambrai may sound unfamiliar to modern readers. The bishopric of Cambrai dates to the sixth century but only became an archdiocese and, consequently, the centre of a church province in the sixteenth century. The elevation of the see resulted from the heavily contested reorganization of the diocesan map of the Low Countries by King Philip II in 1559. The new province included the medieval sees of Arras, Cambrai and Tournai, as well as the newly created bishoprics of Saint-Omer and Namur. Its borders were established to encompass the French-speaking Walloon provinces in the south of the Low Countries, territories that are now divided between France and Belgium.1 In the early modern period, this area was already a border and transit zone between France, the Low Countries, the Holy Roman Empire and the British Isles. The province’s history in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was deeply marked by recurrent and devastating warfare between the kings of Spain and France, eventually resulting in the transfer of significant territory to France.2 However, the Province of Cambrai was also the scene of frequent cross-border mobility, and a safe haven for Catholic exiles originating from the British Isles, France and other parts of the Low Countries.

Abstract:
In this article, our goal is to construct a mapping of Dom Helder Câmara's intellectual production between 1964 and 1970, a period marked by both the early years of his administration at the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife and the civil-military dictatorship. At this time, which preceded the creation of Liberation Theology, the religious leader in question defended development projects based on a perspective guided by the Church's social doctrine. With this approach, we will enable a discussion of his moments of greatest activity, themes, interlocutors, target audience, and the difficulties imposed on the archbishop by the Catholic Church and the government during the first years of the dictatorship in the country. For the development of this work, we analyzed the speeches presented by Dom Helder in lectures and some works published by him throughout the 1960s.

Abstract:
Homosexuality is not easily accepted in the Catholic Church. There are at least three major schools concerning the attitude towards homosexuality based on their respective theological methodologies (scientia fidei). The first school is encapsulated in the Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons (1986), which rejects homosexual persons and same-sex sexual relationships. The second school is put forward by John J. McNeill (1993), a moralist who embraces homosexual persons and same-sex sexual relationships. The last one is represented by the document of Amoris Laetitia (2016), which accepts homosexual persons but disapproves of same-sex sexual relationships. These three major schools refer to the interpretation of the document Persona Humana article 8 (1975). A survey of 566 respondents was conducted from the 8th to the 15th of November in 2022. The results show that 74.2% of respondents have a form of acceptance in accordance with Amoris Laetitia, 14.5% with the Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons, and 5.5% with the thoughts of John J. McNeill. Our study concluded that accepting homosexual persons and rejecting homosexual acts is the reference for ad experimentum moral decisions in the context of the Archdiocese of Jakarta in 2022. Abstrak Homoseksualitas tidak begitu mudah diterima dalam Gereja Katolik. Setidaknya ada tiga aliran yang berbeda sikap terhadap homoseksualitas berdasarkan pandangan teologi (scientia fidei) masing-masing. Aliran pertama terwakili oleh dokumen Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons (1986) yang menolak pribadi homoseksual dan hubungan seksual sesama jenis. Hasil survei menunjukkan sebanyak 74.2% responden memiliki bentuk penerimaan sesuai dengan Amoris Laetitia; sebanyak 14.5% responden memiliki bentuk penerimaan sesuai dengan dokumen Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons; dan sebanyak 5.5% responden memiliki bentuk penerimaan sesuai dengan pemikiran John J. McNeill. Kami menyimpulkan bahwa sikap menerima pribadi homoseksual dan menolak tindakan homoseksual merupakan rujukan keputusan moral ad experimentum dalam konteks Keuskupan Agung Jakarta di tahun 2022. Kata-kata Kunci: Homoseksualitas, Persona Humana, Amoris Laetitia, John J. McNeill, sensus fidei, scientia fidei
