Full textThis thesis looks at the relationship between art and politics with the aim of producing concepts that embrace the complex transformations that arise in between the two fields. In this, it shifts its focus from the task of delineating artistic and political fields in order to relate them, towards the conceptualisation of the ambiguous ‘in-between,’ from which the contours of each field emerge. The thesis extends concepts found in Deleuze’s philosophy of film, by composing a philosophical montage of four disjunctive aspects on the problem: a ‘long shot’, a ‘close-up’, an affective ‘cross-cutting’ and a subjective ‘point-of-view shot. ’ This leads us from an initial presentation of the historical scene of our investigation marked by the influence of Plato and Kant, to three images of the in-between: the supplementary frame, the differential fold and the intermediary member of judgement. Through intensive readings of texts by Danto, Derrida, Nancy, Deleuze, Arendt and Malabou, among others, we construct an indirect image of the fragmented in-between that highlights its characteristic plasticity. As a site from which: (i) distinct artistic and political forms emerge; (ii) forms of sense and sensation are endowed and destroyed to configure the world; and (iii) we as molar subjects give ourselves form through judgment, the plasticity of the artistic and political in-between is shown to be multi-faceted. Through a rhythmic alternation between images of frame, fold and judgment, this thesis presents a faithful and non-reductive image of the fragmented relationship between art and politics
Steiner, Liza. "Échos sadiens dans la littérature contemporaine : énoncé d’une nouvelle économie politique." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016STRAC015.
Full textThis work studies the ground shared by the work of the Marquis de Sade and a corpus of works by contemporary writers : Tony Duvert, Catherine Millet, Aldo Busi, Elfriede Jelinek, James Graham Ballard, Bret Easton Ellis, Don DeLillo and Nelly Arcan. Sade’s hypothesis of a combination of sexuality and economy finds echoes in contemporary literature. But the social, liberal and individualistic structure which such literature describes entails different reading protocols. From the elitist posture of Sadian libertines, which endangers the society’s foundations, to democratic leveling, which involves a new conformism, we can see a mutation of the intersubjective relations in progress. The authors of this corpus redefine the economy of passion and the economy of enjoyment by presenting us with characters subjected to the tyranny of consumerism. From the enumeration of sexual partners to a sexual production turned into economic production, our corpus highlights desire as a mode of analysis of new violence within society. The authors in our corpus may not use the same narrative strategies, but their respective ways of writing all contribute to defeating this deadly new Eros

Full textSince the end of the 1990’s, a new generation of female writers started working on stories about the body and sexuality. Some of the narratives they develop drew attention because of the "shameless exhibitionism" they supposedly include, others because of their violence or what appears as a display of pornography. Those texts are evidence of deep changes occurring in our society, but moreover, they are interesting by their lack of respect for the literary conventions. This essay is about the way sex and body are depicted in À ciel ouvert by Nelly Arcan, Baise-moi by Virginie Despentes, La brèche by Marie-Sissi Labrèche, La vie sexuelle de Catherine M. by Catherine Millet and La nouvelle pornographie by Marie Nimier. The body is politics: it tells us that today, as much as in the 1970’s, sexual identities have to be dissolved and recreated. In addition, reading Arcan’s, Despentes’, Labrèche’s and Millet’s work while focalizing on what kind of subject is expressed via pleasure and desire shows that writing about sexuality can be a way of exploring human being when speech is useless. We will then see how the writers use pornography on a generic level and how they try and reconfigure our literary regime.
