Abstract:
The Defense of the Faith.

Abstract:
This article highlights the reticence of the Reformed community toward spirituality, which is devastating in light of our chief end “to glorify God and enjoy him forever” (Westminster Shorter Catechism 1). Reformed spirituality, seemingly short of a lively biblical contemporary expression, needs to be rekindled in a way consistent with its heritage. An increased complementarian practice among the Reformed will assist in such a spiritual reanimation, in the form of a corporate Reformed spirituality founded upon union with Christ. An initial trace of a feminine enjoyment of union with Christ demonstrates this proposal, and, in the spirit of semper reformanda, a discussion of areas for an improved complementarity in the pastoral care and employment of women and of the absence of Reformed female scholars follows.

Keane, Drew N. "“Let me heare … if thou canst say”: The Utility of the Prayer Book Catechism (1549–1604)." Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, August 16, 2020, 004728162094630. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0047281620946307.

Abstract:
This article explores the catechism in the Book of Common Prayer, shedding light on the emergence of instructional writing from oral instruction. The 1549 text evinces qualities of preliterate oral communication identified by Ong. By contrast, the 1604 addendum reveals a trend toward modern plain style, which is even more pronounced in the 1647 Westminster Shorter Catechism. The evidence indicates the oral features were useful to the text’s technical aims. What Ramist plain style gains in precision and objectivity comes at the cost of other useful features, such as reiteration, contextualization, and agonism, which (in Tannen's phrase) involve a greater relative focus on interpersonal involvement between speaker and auditor/ reader.

McQuade, Paula. "Lucy Hutchinson’s Guide to Domestic Catechesis." Review of English Studies, February 1, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/res/hgab087.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This essay proposes that we can better understand Lucy Hutchinson’s manuscript, ‘On the Principles of the Christian Religion’, by considering it in relation to ministerial guides to domestic catechesis. Guides to catechesis were a popular religious genre in sevententh-century England and were most often composed by ministers as part of their pastoral duties; they provided explanations of the Westminster Shorter Catechism and were designed for use within godly homes. ‘On the Principles’ resembles these ministerial guides both thematically and structurally. But Hutchinson elaborates and expands the genre to reflect her own concerns and experience as a catechizing mother, just as she adapts the epic genre in ‘Order and Disorder’. By composing a guide to domestic catechesis for her daughter, Hutchinson draws upon the authority accorded to mothers in domestic catechesis while emulating ministerial authority. Hutchinson’s adaptation of this ministerial genre reveals her views concerning the role of domestic catechesis within Christian community as well as her understanding of the relationship between women’s teaching and ministerial authority.
