Abstract:
Exhibiting Antonio Canova: Display and the Transformation of Sculptural Theory argues that the display of Canova’s sculptures in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries acted as a catalyst for discourse across a broad range of subjects. By enshrining his marble figures alongside plaster casts of ancient works, bathing them in candlelight, staining and waxing their surfaces, and even setting them in motion on rotating bases, Canova engaged viewers intellectually, physically, and emotionally. These displays inspired discussions on topics as diverse as originality and artistic production, the association between the sculptural surface, flesh, and anatomy, the relationship between painting and sculpture, and the role of public museums. Beholders’ discussions also shaped the legacy of important sculptural theories. They helped usher in their modern definitions and created the lenses through which we experience and interpret works of art, establishing modern attitudes not just towards sculpture, but towards cultural patrimony in general.

Abstract:
This article discusses nanocatalysis and especially the interrelation between the structure, composition and properties of catalysts. It begins with a review of techniques that have been developed and employed for surface characterization, which can be divided intothree main areas: spectroscopy, diffraction, and microscopy. After describing the nanocharacterization tools, the article considers the theoretical underpinnings of catalysts and catalytic processes. It also examines how detailed atomic-scale insight into elementary surface processes relevant to catalysis can be obtained mainly by means of high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscope studies on single-crystal surfaces. More specifically, it explores the surface structure, adsorption, dissociation and diffusion, and surface chemical reactions of catalysts. The article also looks at the design of new catalysts from first principles and concludes with an assessment of nanocatalysts and transmission electron microscope studies of nanoclusters on high surface area supports.

Abstract:
Over the past few decades, transition metal catalyzed C–H activation has been immensely investigated due to the ability to functionalize relatively unreactive C-H bonds whilst simplifying synthetic schemes and making the synthetic pathway more economical. Nowadays, a great emphasis has been placed on substitution of noble metal catalysts (Pd, Rh, Ru, etc.) with more abundant and cheaper alternatives (Cu, Co, Ni). The aim of the Doctoral Thesis is the development of novel cobalt catalyzed C-H bond functionalization methodology. The Doctoral Thesis is prepared as a collection of publications. The main results of the Thesis were summarized in 4 scientific publications, 3 review articles and 2 book chapters.

Full text
Abstract:
This book will formally launch "organic synthesis engineering" as a distinctive field in the armory of the reaction engineer. Its main theme revolves around two developments: catalysis and the role of process intensification in enhancing overall productivity. Each of these two subjects are becoming increasingly useful in organic synthesis engineering, especially in the production of medium and small volume chemicals and enhancing reaction rates by extending laboratory techniques, such as ultrasound, phase transfer catalysts, membrane reactor, and microwaves, to industrial scale production. This volume describes the applications of catalysis in organic synthesis and outlines different techniques of reaction rate and/or selectivity enhancement against a background of reaction engineering principles for both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems.

Abstract:
Librarians can be effective catalysts and vital connectors who facilitate successful partnerships that enrich students' lives–"radical collaborations" that have deep and far-reaching impact. Envisioning schools as learning organizations requires collaborating with the greater communities as an integral part of the school's dynamic. How can librarians be key players in realizing this concept of schools? This book addresses this essential question, as well as how librarians can serve as catalysts in reaching beyond the traditional school to form alliances and partnerships with a range of community organizations and agencies, and how these collaborations result in transformative learning experiences not only for the students but for the adults who work together as well. The authors provide examples of schools where librarians, library directors, and educators are joining together in these types of unique partnerships. Chapters are authored by library professionals, who describe what stimulates and motivates these partnerships and how they are collaboratively developed and sustained. This publication will be a catalyst that will inspire readers to grow similar alliances in their own schools and districts among public libraries, colleges, arts foundations, nonprofit cultural organizations, and STEM-related agencies.

Abstract:
This monograph is a continuation of the monograph by V.V. Sadovnikov. Lateral interaction. Moscow 2006. Publishing house "Anta-Eco", 2006. ISBN 5-9730-0017-6. In this work, the foundations of the theory of heterogeneous catalysis and the theory of chemisorption are more easily formulated. The book consists of two parts, closely related to each other. These are the theoretical foundations of heterogeneous catalysis and chemisorption. In the theory of heterogeneous catalysis, an experiment is described in detail, which must be carried out in order to isolate the stages of a catalytic reaction, to find the stoichiometry of each of the stages. This experiment is based on the need to obtain the exact value of the specific surface area of the catalyst, the number of centers at which the reaction proceeds, and the output curves of each of the reaction products. The procedures for obtaining this data are described in detail. Equations are proposed and solved that allow calculating the kinetic parameters of the nonequilibrium stage and the thermodynamic parameters of the equilibrium stage. The description of the quantitative theory of chemisorption is based on the description of the motion of an atom along a crystal face. The axioms on which this mathematics should be based are formulated, the mathematical apparatus of the theory is written and the most detailed instructions on how to use it are presented. The first axiom: an atom, moving along the surface, is present only in places with minima of potential energy. The second axiom: the face of an atom is divided into cells, and the position of the atom on the surface of the face is set by one parameter: the cell number. The third axiom: the atom interacts with the surrounding material bodies only at the points of minimum potential energy. The fourth axiom: the solution of the equations is a map of the arrangement of atoms on the surface. The fifth axiom: quantitative equations are based on the concept of a statistically independent particle. The formation energies of these particles and their concentration are calculated by the developed program. The program based on these axioms allows you to simulate and calculate the interaction energies of atoms on any crystal face. The monograph is intended for students, post-graduate students and researchers studying work and working in petrochemistry and oil refining.

Abstract:
Availability and access to electricity is central to the economic and social development of any nation. The state provided electricity as a social infrastructure thus expanding the role of the state as owner, manager, and regulator. This route has, however, failed given the mounting budgetary crisis triggered by global financial dislocations and oil market meltdowns which affected state revenues and impacted upon the ability of states to own, manage, and operate electricity infrastructure. The huge electricity deficits in Africa call for hitherto unexplored solutions beyond those of public sector funding. Private sector participation became inevitable and with it the imperativeness of balancing the interests of consumers, investors, and the state that are always mutually exclusive. Regulation offers itself as a veritable tool to moderate the differing interests to ensure the availability of electricity at sustainable and affordable levels.

Abstract:
It is a commonplace to see the First World War as a major caesura in German and European history. This article records the war years from 1914–1918 in Germany. Not least, such an interpretation can rely on the perceptions of influential contemporary observers. In Germany, as in other belligerent countries, many artists, intellectuals, and academics experienced the outbreak of the war as a cathartic moment. While it is straightforward to see the mobilization for war and violence as a major caesura for any of the belligerent countries, it is much more complicated to account for causalities and for German peculiarities. Difficult methodological questions arise, which have not always been properly addressed. While Germany was facing a ‘world of enemies’, as a popular slogan suggested, the semantics of the political shifted to an articulation of emotions, excitements, and promises, contributing to a dramatized narrative centered around the notions of sacrifice and fate. The effect of World War I concludes the article.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the opportunities present in the Rome Statute to promote justice for victims of sexual and gender-based violence in the International Criminal Court (ICC). It focuses on the concept of complementarity to show the ICC’s potential for reform and to catalyze the prosecution of international crimes (genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes). It then describes the ICC’s broader approach to sexual violence and gender, as well as the domestic impact of this jurisprudence. The chapter concludes by suggesting that the Rome Statute’s standards should be introduced into national law. This could create broader benefits for women and victims of sexual and gender-based violence beyond the prosecution of criminal perpetrators.

Full text
Abstract:
Books dealing with the mechanisms of enzymatic reactions were written a generation ago. They included volumes entitled Bioorganic Mechanisms, I and II by T.C. Bruice and S.J. Benkovic, published in 1965, the volume entitled Catalysis in Chemistry and Enzymology by W.P. Jencks in 1969, and the volume entitled Enzymatic Reaction Mechanisms by C.T. Walsh in 1979. The Walsh book was based on the course taught by W.P. Jencks and R.H. Abeles at Brandeis University in the 1960's and 1970's. By the late 1970's, much more could be included about the structures of enzymes and the kinetics and mechanisms of enzymatic reactions themselves, and less emphasis was placed on chemical models. Walshs book was widely used in courses on enzymatic mechanisms for many years. Much has happened in the field of mechanistic enzymology in the past 15 to 20 years. Walshs book is both out-of-date and out-of-focus in todays world of enzymatic mechanisms. There is no longer a single volume or a small collection of volumes to which students can be directed to obtain a clear understanding of the state of knowledge regarding the chemicals mechanisms by which enzymes catalyze biological reactions. There is no single volume to which medicinal chemists and biotechnologists can refer on the subject of enzymatic mechanisms. Practitioners in the field have recognized a need for a new book on enzymatic mechanisms for more than ten years, and several, including Walsh, have considered undertaking to modernize Walshs book. However, these good intentions have been abandoned for one reason or another. The great size of the knowledge base in mechanistic enzymology has been a deterrent. It seems too large a subject for a single author, and it is difficult for several authors to coordinate their work to mutual satisfaction. This text by Perry A. Frey and Adrian D. Hegeman accomplishes this feat, producing the long-awaited replacement for Walshs classic text.

In the concluding chapter, Chapter 11, we summarize the various methods that asset-owning investors might consider applying when they are endeavouring to catalyse change and innovate prudently. They can achieve this by viewing the world through the lens of those institutional investors who search for organizational innovation and reconfiguration to meet their long-term objectives in a challenging world. The objectives of Chapter 11, and indeed of the whole book, have been to remind investors of their core functions and to show them how they can best take charge of their futures. This chapter lays down plans for how asset owners might mobilize their innovative ideas and, indeed, persuade their boards to resource them appropriately.

In Chapter 9, Elham Fakhro examines the use of truth and fact-finding commissions in two monarchies, pre- and post-Arab Spring. She argues that in Morocco and Bahrain the absence of regime change has not prevented the use of truth-telling. However, that same absence of reform has constrained the scope of these mechanisms, preventing the naming of alleged perpetrators or units. And, she argues, the wider political settlement between regimes and reformers has limited the potential for the creation of other transitional justice mechanisms, or for truth-telling to act as a catalyst to reform.

This chapter demonstrates how scenes of severe human hardship illustrate and authenticate the San Francisco pesthouse experience. While legislation, politics, aversive emotions, and medical theories determined the location of an isolation facility, ostracized patients' lives shaped the institution's character and dismal reputation. The trauma of total isolation compounded the stigma of disfigurement from disease. Life as a pariah detained in a discredited and feared prison-like institution offered occasional and welcome fodder for the print media, always a catalyst for revealing and often molding emotional landscapes. Although a religious context remained hidden, all segregations seemed per se penitential, a just destiny for people who had become dangerous to others.

Drawing on insights from the previous chapters, this chapter details the various rifts in Muslim America that cut across generational, gender, ethno-racial, and immigrant–convert categories. It argues that the narrative that calls for building a community indexes a rapprochement between the constituting groups of Muslim America. This rapprochement is taking place in and through the process of constructing a coalitional sociopolitical identity inspired by models from American society and from the Islamic concept of ummah. The chapter argues that the challenges that Muslims encounter in a post-9/11 America have acted as a catalyst for this process of coalitional community building, but it is a work in progress.

Full text
Abstract:
In Planetary Longings eminent cultural theorist Mary Louise Pratt posits that the last decade of the twentieth century and the first decades of the twenty-first mark a turning point in the human and planetary condition. Examining the forces of modernity, neoliberalism, coloniality, and indigeneity in their pre- and postmillennial forms, Pratt reflects on the crisis of futurity that accompanies the millennial turn in relation to environmental disaster and to the new forms of thinking it has catalyzed. She turns to 1990s Latin American vernacular culture, literary fiction, and social movements, which simultaneously registered neoliberalism’s devastating effects and pursued alternate ways of knowing and living. Tracing the workings of colonialism alongside the history of anticolonial struggles and Indigenous mobilizations in the Americas, Pratt analyzes indigeneity both as a key index of coloniality, neoliberal extraction, and ecological destruction, and as a source for alternative modes of thought and being. Ultimately, Pratt demonstrates that the changes on either side of the millennium have catalyzed new forms of world-making and knowledge-making in the face of an unknowable and catastrophic future.

It explains why the family is an especially important mechanism through which the transmission of trust-producing culture occurs. It also discusses how changes in technology have altered the returns parents expect to derive directly for themselves and indirectly for their children through the inculcation of trust-producing moral beliefs. It then explores the role played by organized religion, namely, how religion can speed the inculcation of trust-producing moral beliefs and therefore catalyze the emergence of mass flourishing or freeze a society at a low level of prosperity and freedom through cultural lock-in. The implications the framework has for good government and the rise of civilization generally are then discussed.

Abstract:
This chapter explores patients’ personal accounts of spirituality and illness within four Boston hospitals, finding that the majority of patients consider spirituality and religion important to their illness experience. It highlights several interlocking themes that explain how religion and spirituality operate within a person’s personal experience. One key theme, spiritual transformation, highlights a shift that takes place for many patients within illness. Almost all patients, as they stare at the reality of their own mortality, find that our cultural camouflage of death disappears, and this serves as a catalyst for patients to directly consider and weigh spiritual issues. The Boston patient sample offers a “thick” account of patient experience within a metro area that is far less religious than many other places in the United States. Patient data confirm the claim that, for nearly all, illness emerges as a spiritual event of great importance.

‘Further innovations and controversies’ looks in more detail at affinities and differences between some of the key analytic approaches to emerge post-war, especially in America, France, and Britain. It begins with the ‘ego psychology’ tradition in post-war America led by Heinz Hartmann, Ernst Kris, and Rudolph Loewenstein before considering the work of Jacques Lacan in France and new directions taken in Britain by Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott, and Wilfred Bion. Each of these main figures was both an inspiration to others and a catalyst for argument and new approaches. Distinct schools of thought within psychoanalysis owe much to these individual clinicians, but they also reflect wider differences in national culture and thought.

Abstract:
The landmark paper discussed in this chapter is ‘Botulinum toxin type A induces direct analgesic effects in chronic neuropathic pain’, published by Ranoux et al. in 2008. The muscle-relaxant properties of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) have long been known and used therapeutically. However, BTX-A actions independent of those affecting neuromuscular function had previously only been alluded to, via the observation that BTX-A injections alleviated pain more than would have been expected through the treatment of muscle spasm alone. This paper was one of the first to specifically examine the efficacy of BTX-A in neuropathic pain and was a catalyst for further investigation into BTX-A as a novel analgesic.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how the exploration of the local and global worlds, the expansion of British trade and empire, catalysed new territories of fiction. It first focuses on writings regarding voyages and pirates, which have proliferated in the novels of the 1720s. The chapter then turns to the exploration of lands, where novels began providing zoological, ethnographic, and topographic detail. The point is not so much how the travel narratives may have been sources or models for the early novel, but rather how the early travel narratives themselves had the compelling power and quite often the narrative art of those early novels. Finally, the chapter turns to narratives set within England itself.

Hinton, Alexander Laban. Conclusion. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198820949.003.0014.

Abstract:
Beginning with a discussion of Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia civil party Neth Phally, the book’s conclusion, “Justice in Translation,” argues for a dynamic, discursively-informed phenomenological justice approach to transitional justice, one in keeping with the spirit of critical transitional justice studies and that foregrounds ethnographic attunement to lived experience, discourses, interstices, and the combustive encounters masked by the justice facade. To this end, the chapter reconsiders the meaning of justice in Cambodia through the lens of translation and the acts of imagination transitional justice may catalyze. Refocusing on “justice in translation” in this manner, the conclusion contends, enables us to rethink the ends of transitional justice and the paths forward after genocide and mass violence.

Abstract:
This article discusses the selective self-assembly of semi-metal straight and branched nanorods on inert substrates. In particular, it describes antimony (Sb) nanorods and bismuth (Bi) nanobelts on inert substrates by physical vapor deposition in vacuum without using any catalyst and nanoscale template. After describing the experimental and drift correction procedures, the article reviews previous studies of semi-metal growth on inert substrates. It then measures the surface morphology and atomic structures of self-assembled Sb nanorods and Bi nanobelts using an in-situ scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). Based on these STM data, a mechanism for the self-assembly of straight and branched semi-metal nanorods is proposed.

Deigh, John. William James and the Rise of the Scientific Study of Emotion. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190878597.003.0003.

Abstract:
Recent attempts by philosophers to revive William James’s theory of emotions rest on a basic misunderstanding of James’s theory. To see why, one needs to see how James’s theory completed the transformation of the study of emotions from a study in moral philosophy to a scientific study. This essay charts that transformation. The catalyst for this transformation is Hume’s theory of the passions. The essay offers an explanation of the innovations Hume introduced into this theory and how they brought about the passage from the traditional view of the passions as springs of action that Hume radically revised to the view of emotions in the field of experimental psychology that James helped to pioneer as states of arousal.

Abstract:
Diagnosis 54Management 55Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world, affecting around 5 billion people, most of them from developing countries. The prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia in UK preschool children is ~8%, increasing considerably in inner city children; ~9% of under 5s in the USA are thought to be iron deficient. Depletion of iron stores is followed by the development of anaemia, initially with a normal mean cell volume (MCV). Continuing deficiency leads to impairment of erythropoiesis, with hypochromia and microcytosis apparent on blood film. Iron is essential in haemoglobin for oxygen transport, and is also found in myoglobin, and some enzymes (peroxidase, catalase, and cytochromes). Iron from red blood cell breakdown is recycled and excess iron stored as ferritin and haemosiderin....
