Resum: Aquest treball es proposa analitzar la reacció dels erudits valencians Benvingut Oliver i Joan Baptista Perales davant els postulats de la filologia romànica sobre el català en la segona meitat del segle XIX. A més, tractem de relacionar la posició d’Oliver i Perales amb altres erudits i escriptors del moviment reinaixencista i amb la consciència de comunitat lingüística compartida amb catalans, balears i nord-catalans. A partir de la meitat del Vuitcents els romanistes germànics funden la filologia romànica i constaten que el català és el nom de la llengua pròpia dels territoris de llengua catalana, diferent de l’occità i sense res a veure amb el llemosí amb què era conegut des de principis del segle xvi. Aquests postulats respecte a la identitat i el nom de la llengua catalana són ràpidament rebuts i acceptats a Catalunya; i a les Illes Balears i a la Catalunya del Nord foren rebuts positivament amb molt poques excepcions. Però no així al País Valencià, on només una minoria d’erudits com Benvingut Oliver i Joan B. Perales –entre d’altres– va acceptar i divulgar aquests postulats. Paraules clau: Segle XIX, Nom i identitat de la llengua catalana, Renaixença Valenciana, Benvingut Oliver, Joan Baptista Perales Abstract: This paper analyses the reaction of the Valencian scholars Benvingut Oliver and Joan Baptista Perales against postulates on the Catalan Romance philology in the middle of the nineteenth century. Moreover, this work tries to relate Oliver and Perales position with others scholars and writers of the Reinaixença Valenciana movement and the awareness of linguistic community shared with Catalan speakers from Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and North Catalonia. From the middle of the nineteenth century the German romanists found the Romance philology. They established “Catalan” as the name of the language of the Catalan-speaking areas. Even this is different from Occitan and has nothing to do with Limousin, which was known by this name since the early sixteenth century. Regarding the identity and the name of the Catalan language, these assumptions are quickly received and assumed in Catalonia. Although in the Balearic Islands and North Catalonia they were received positively with very few exceptions. Whereas in Valencia, only a minority of scholars like Benvingut Oliver and Joan B. Perales –among others– accepted and disseminated these postulates. Masterworks of Antoni Gaudí as the Manifestation of Catalanism?Catalonia is an autonomous community in Spain, possessing a unique culture. This is meticulously preserved, not only by intellectuals, but also by its citizens, who hold their individual language, common history and traditions in the highest esteem. It is the perfect example of a nation without a state, truly dedicated to the peaceful struggle for survival of its exceptional individuality. The article explains how the historical relationship between Catalonia and Spain has awakened the Catalonian sense of individuality and the will to fight for its rights, leading to the creation of a separate political idea – Catalanism. For the major part of the article the author presents the views on the Catalan issue as expressed by Antoni Gaudí – one of the most distinguished of Catalans.

<p>RIASSUNTO: Il presente lavoro mira a fornire nuovi appunti sulle conoscenze circa la traduzione catalana della <em>Somme le roi</em>, compendio morale francese composto nel 1279 dal domenicano Frère Laurent e di grande successo lungo tutto il xiv secolo. Le forti analogie con la versione occitanica della <em>Somme</em>, nota anche come <em>Libre de vicis et de vertutz</em>, lasciano presumere che il testo catalano discenda proprio dalla traduzione occitana e non dall’originale francese. Il caso di studio è reso difficile dalla mancanza di lezioni erronee imputabili al processo di traduzione e dalle complicazioni imputabili alla probabile concomitanza di più fonti, in occitano e in francese, dietro l’allestimento della versione catalana. In ragione di ciò, il contributo si sofferma a illustrare le due tradizioni testuali – catalana e occitana – mettendo a confronto i dati tratti dall’edizione critica del <em>Libre de vicis et vertutz</em>, di futura pubblicazione, con lo studio di Wittlin (1983) sul testo catalano. Il discorso si concentra principalmente su due questioni cruciali: la <em>reductio ad unum</em> dei testimoni catalani e la scelta di includere nella <em>recensio</em> occitana un testimone trascritto in catalano.<br /><br /></p><p>ABSTRACT: This paper aims at updating the scholarship on the 14th-century Catalan translation of the French moral <em>compendium</em> known as <em>Somme le roi</em>. The relevant similarities between the texts demonstrate that the Catalan version directly depends on the Occitan translation, known as <em>Libre de vicis et de vertutz</em>. Therefore, the paper illustrates both the Catalan and the Occitan textual traditions and compares the results of my critical edition of the <em>Libre de vicis et vertutz</em> with Wittlin’s study (1983) on the Catalan text. This examination will focus on two main critical issues: the <em>reductio ad unum</em> of all the Catalan manuscripts and the choice to include a Catalan manuscript in the Occitan <em>recensio</em>.</p>

Dans les ensembles espagnol et canadien, la Catalogne et le Québec partagent plusieurs caractéristiques. Bénéficiant tous deux de pouvoirs politiques, économiques et linguistiques, ils ont mis à profit ces derniers pour les travaux d’aménagement linguistique et terminologique sur leurs territoires respectifs. En outre, les sociétés catalane et québécoise ont en commun que leur langue nationale est minoritaire au sein du pays, ce qui a engendré au fil du temps la mise en place de multiples mesures pour la préserver et la dynamiser. Le présent article retrace la forme qu’ont pris les nombreux échanges entre le Québec et la Catalogne depuis le milieu des années 1970, moment-clé pour l’affirmation linguistique des deux peuples. Les diverses facettes de l’apport du Québec à la Catalogne en ce qui touche l’aménagement linguistique sont plus particulièrement examinées. Ces échanges ont inspiré les Catalans dans la création de leur politique d’éducation et de normalisation terminologique, notamment ; citons entre autres l’Office québécois de la langue française qui trouve en Termcat un équivalent catalan depuis maintenant 25 ans. Également, en plus des idées, les autres formes des échanges québécois-catalans sont décrites. Un bilan des échanges Québec-Catalogne est ensuite dressé, notamment pour déterminer globalement l’impact qu’aura eu l’influence québécoise dans la discipline. La conclusion souligne que, depuis nombre d’années, la Catalogne rayonne fortement dans le domaine terminologique : elle est devenue elle-même un important lieu de diffusion vers d’autres communautés et constitue à son tour une source d’inspiration pour le Québec.

Independence Movement in Catalonia and Its Significance for Catalans in the Second Decade of the 21st Century The paper focuses on the issues of the independence movement in Catalonia in the second decade of the 21st century. The aim of this study is to explore the evolution of Catalonia’s separatist aspirations in this period in terms of politics and especially society, and thus the position of Catalans towards this phenomenon. A significant element of the author’s considerations is the demonstration and analysis of the specificity and factors determining contemporary Catalan separatism, as well as concerning the context of perceiving Catalans as a nation. The independence process in the second decade of the 21st century, including treatment of events such as the judgment of the Spanish Constitutional Court in 2010, the independence referendum in 2017, or the trial and judgment of Catalan politicians in 2019, taken into account by the author, hold considerable importance for this work. The key part of the paper is to present the issues of the independence movement in the discussed period in terms of society; its emerging role in the Catalan society, and the impact of the activities and actions of Catalans themselves on the politics and development of the region’s separatist aspirations.

Here we analyse her first book, the auto-biographical Jo també sóc catalana (“I Am Also Catalan”) by examining how the migratory experience is expressed from a linguistic, cultural and gender perspective. We also compare her case with that of other writers, especially those belonging to the so-called «Francophone Maghreb» literature.

The article deals with a little-known chapter in the history of the Catalan language and culture: its presence outside the Catalan Countries, especially in Cuba. The political tendencies and the emergence of Catalanism are reflected in the founding and organization of a Centre Català (Catalan Center) and a Societat de Beneficiència de Naturals de Catalunya(Charity Society for Catalans). The struggles for the preservation and promotion of the Catalan language in the Catalan-speaking community indicate a growing awareness at the end of the 19th century, culminating in the 1920s, and show a parallel evolution to that of Catalonia in terms of linguistic debate.

També analitza les observacions i percepcions lingüístiques d’aquests sobre la llengua catalana i sobre l’ús que en fan els habitants d’aquests territoris. En relació amb el segon objectiu, ens interessa saber si reconeixien que la llengua que parlaven els valencians és la mateixa que la dels catalans, mallorquins i altres veïns de la catalanofonia; quina posició ocupa la llengua catalana entre la resta de llengües romàniques; si el català té el mateix estatus que el castellà o el francès o bé el consideraven un dialecte. En molts casos no parlen de la llengua amb tant de detall perquè l’objectiu dels seus viatges era un altre, però sovint de les seves diferents afirmacions podem deduir els seus posicionaments per a respondre aquestes preguntes. It also analyses their observations and linguistic perceptions of the Catalan language, as well as the language spoken by the inhabitants of these territories. Regarding the second objective, we are particularly interested in knowing if they recognise that the language spoken by Valencians is the same as that of the Catalans, Majorcans, and other neighbours of the Catalan-speaking world; what position occupy the Catalan language among the rest of the Romance languages; if they consider that Catalan has the same status as Spanish and French or if they considered it was a dialect. In many cases they do not talk about the language in such detail because the purpose of their travels was different, but often from their different descriptions and statements we can deduce their positions and opinions to answer these questions. Abstract:
Since the Franco regime came to an end in 1978, the main political and social forces in Catalonia have pursued a model of intercultural relations that aims to protect Catalan cultural identity and at the same time to incorporate the various different waves of migrants who came to Catalonia from other regions of Spain during the course of the 20th century and who now represent close to 40% of the population. Moreover, during the negotiations for the new Spanish constitution in 1978, these political forces in Catalonia accepted a new political relationship with Spain with the constitution of the Catalan autonomous region. During the course of the past 15 years, two major factors have become increasingly apparent. First, there has been a further wave of migration from other countries and continents, in particular from Muslim countries (13.6% in 2016 compared with 2.9% in 2000). Second, the place of Catalonia within Spain has been called into question for a number of different political, economic, social, and cultural reasons. In 2017, a considerable number of Catalans, close to 50%, mobilized to demand the independence of their country and attempted to proclaim and constitute the “Republic of Catalonia,” thus breaking the constitutional law in force throughout Spain. This breach of the law brought about a response from the Spanish security forces and justice system, which resulted in the suspension of the Catalan autonomous government and the calling of elections. The object of this study is to analyze the impact of the recent migrations and the current political situation on the model of intercultural relations that has governed Catalan cultural identity in recent times. The principal objectives of the model have been to ensure the civil unity of Catalonia, to safeguard Catalan language and culture, and to promote respect for cultures of citizens from other regions of Spain, all within a context of mutual dialogue and exchange. The thesis of this article is that this model, which pursues integration and unity, is in danger of breaking down as a result of the new phenomena.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the work Los col·loquis de la insigne ciutat de Tortosa [Dialogues. A Catalan Renaissance Colloquy Set in the City of Tortosa] by the Catalan knight Cristòfol Despuig. While it was written around 1557, it was not published until 1877. My analysis demonstrates that the issue of language is raised in the Dialogues to defend the memory of the Catalan-Aragonese Empire in which the Principality of Catalonia has always been the dominant part, especially in the Catalan-speaking lands. The prestigious position of the Principality of Catalonia is supported by an explicit hierarchy of the varieties of the Catalan language in which the Catalan used in the Principality of Catalonia is considered superior. This explicit hierarchy implies two important ideological aspects: first, the idea of origin as the main criterion to value the different varieties of the language. Second, the description of the Valencian other as a palimpsest, since while Valencians were colonized first by Catalans and then by Castilians, the Catalan colonial presence can still be recovered. The otherness of the Valencian identity is represented by four linguistic aspects of the text: first, the Castilian name of the Valencian character: don Pedro. Second, don Pedro’s lack of awareness that Catalan was a courtly language. Third, don Pedro’s acknowledgement that the Catalan spoken in the Kingdom of Valencia has been contaminated by its contact with Castilian. Finally, the erasure of the literary achievements in Catalan in the Kingdom of Valencia during the reign of the Castilian Trastámara Dynasty in the Crown of Aragon (1412–1516). This erasure supports the superiority of the House of Barcelona-Aragon over the Trastámara Dynasty. Moreover, it supports a clear association between language and political power in which literature does not play an important role in the value of a language.

Questo articolo presenta la ricerca sugli italianismi in catalano svolta e in corso d’opera nell'ambito del progetto OIM (Osservatorio degli Italianismi nel Mondo). Lo studio si articola in due parti in relazione alle fasi di ricerca che sono state seguite. La prima parte è dedicata ad un bilancio del lavoro svolto che descrive quantitativamente le informazioni sugli italianismi in lingua catalana raccolte nel progetto OIM. In particolare, i termini vengono studiati sulla base della loro categoria grammaticale, etimologia, significato, fonti bibliografiche e uso diacronico. Nella seconda parte si indagano le possibili modalità di implementazione del numero di voci catalane presenti nel database e di perfezionamento di quelle validate, con l'utilizzo di titoli bibliografici appena usciti o in uscita al di fuori del progetto OIM e attraverso il confronto incrociato con i dati relativi a lingue geograficamente vicine al catalano raccolte nel database, a dimostrazione del dinamismo del progetto OIM. The Italianisms in Catalan: a balance and further perspectives This article presents the research on Italianisms in the Catalan language carried out and in progress within the OIM project (Osservatorio degli Italianismi nel Mondo). The study is divided into two parts in relation to the research phases that have been followed. The first part is a work balance with a quantitative description of the information on Italianisms in the Catalan language collected in the OIM project. In particular, the terms are studied on the basis of their grammatical category, etymology, meaning, bibliographic sources and diachronic use. The second part investigates the possible ways of implementing the number of Catalan entries in the database and perfecting the validated ones, with the use of bibliographic titles that have just come out or are outgoing outside the OIM project, and through cross-comparison with the data relating to languages geographically close to Catalan collected in the database, demonstrating the dynamism of the OIM project.

És una obra d’aproximadament l’any 1921 que, per la seva temàtica, ell mateix reservava per a no publicar-se. Bulbena és autor d’una discutida obra lingüística, entre la qual trobem diferents diccionaris, alguns d’ells entre el català i el francès. El darrer que publicà és el Diccionari de les lléngues francesa & catalana / Dictionnaire catalan-français (1921) que inclou dos apèndixs, un «Vocabulari d’argot francès» i un «Vocabulari d’argot catalan». La Flora és, així, un suplement al lèxic pornogràfic d’aquest diccionari. Per altra banda, el títol de Flora pornogràfica sembla fer referència a una obra de la lexicografia francesa que recull mots obscens presents a obres d’Emile Zola i altres escriptors naturalistes, La flore pornographique (1883), d’Ambroise Macrobe. Els mots d’argot sexual de la Flora, amb un especial focus temàtic en la prostitució, tenen interès lingüístic i cultural tant per a la llengua catalana com per a la llengua francesa. Bulbena is the author of a controversial linguistic work, among which are various dictionaries, some of them between Catalan and French. The latest is the Diccionari de les lléngues francesa & catalana / Dictionnaire catalan-français (1921), that includes two appendixes, a «Vocabulari d’argot francès» and a «Vocabulari d’argot catalan». The Flora is thus a pornographic supplement to the lexicon of these vocabularies. Moreover, the title Flora pornogràfica seems to refer to a pornographic French lexicography work that contains obscene words from books by Émile Zola and other naturalist writers: La flore pornographique (1883) by Ambroise Macrobe. The history which is taught in Catalan schools is not on the margin of the political, economic and social situation which is being shared by those living in Catalonia. There is an on-going debate about citizenship between the Catalans and the Spanish, which has had a major impact in the media, and has had repercussions for the future of Catalonia within the Spanish state. Teaching the history of Catalonia and Spain is an issue that has a strong resonance within this debate. The problem is not new and has deep historical roots. It has re-emerged, on the one hand, because of the attitude of the state government, which represents the most centralist Spanish nationalism. Moreover, the current economic situation has made the latent problem even more urgent. However, the debate has also served to mask other important problems.

This article is devoted to contacts and connections between Catalan and Russian intellectuals, artists in the period from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. These interactions were largely fragmentary, the connections were personal and few, but they significantly influenced the literary and artistic life of Russia and Catalonia. Questions of culture, science and art were the main subjects of conversation between Russians and Catalans. The article highlights such episodes as the correspondence between I. Pavlovsky and N. Ollier, the influence of the Catalan artist M. Fortuny on domestic painters, joint projects of S. Diaghilev and H. Sert, etc.

The paper analyses the relationships between the teams and supporters of FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol Barcelona, in which the dispute concerning Catalanness has been and remains the foremost issue. FC Barcelona is widely considered an ambassador of Catalonia, a symbol of Catalanness and the epitome of Catalanism as embodied through football. Espanyol, its local rival, has to face allegations of being a non-Catalan club, or an outgrowth of Real Madrid in Barcelona. While Barça is the club in which one “does politics” and with which one creates Catalonia (fer Catalunya), it is emphasized that Espanyol and its supporters are not involved in politics and the Catalan national effort. A perennial feud continues between the boards and fans of both clubs; historical, identity-related and ethnic arguments are invoked to demonstrate the Catalanness of one side (FC Barcelona) and its incompleteness or even utter absence in the other (RCD Espanyol). The analysis conducted in the paper shows that FC Barcelona’s exclusive Catalanness and right to represent Catalonia is a historical and social fact, but it has been challenged recently by Espanyol through the Catalanization the club undertook in mid-1990s and a series of public campaigns to undermine the hegemony of Barça in the city and the region. Espanyol is the active side in the contest to overcome FC Barcelona’s monopoly on representing Catalonia, while Barcelona itself focuses on retaining its previous status. The study demonstrates that both clubs are in fact polysemous, which means that Espanyol has supporters who feel first and foremost Catalans and espouse Catalan independence, while avowed opponents of the same idea can be found among the supporters of the Blaugrana, although the club is primarily Spanish and not only Catalan.

In the 1970’s, however, after the death of Franco, right-wing political parties started a campaign of secession for the Comunitat Valenciana and tried to establish the independent language “valencià” at a legal level. In the Nou Estatut, valencià is now treated as an independent language. But in a dictamen the Language Academy of València admits that the Comunitat Valenciana shares a language with Catalonia. What is happening in Catalonia? This is a commonly asked question, abroad and in Spain. Even Catalans are often bewildered by the fast tide of events surrounding the pro-independence movement and its contradictions. Local answers not only tend to be partial, and loaded with special-pleading, but present a complexity of intricate detail that is hard to follow for anyone not in living in Catalonia and very attentive to the flow of politics in the media. Spanish observers, as a rule threatened by ongoing events and therefore hostile, simplify to an extreme that can be obtuse. The author, not a native Catalan, is an historian specialized in the study of Catalan nationalism. He has taught in Barcelona universities for more than forty years, usually in the Catalan language. Contrarian by nature, he has tried hard to remain outside the partisan trenches, to avoid both the pressure of the often heavy-handed nationalist lobby and the counter-pressure that marks the discourse of persecution of the most outraged Spanish opposition. In his contribution here, Enric Ucelay-Da Cal presents a narrative in terms of party politics and the social trends that political organizations try to channel and represent.

Abstract Data from 949 children and adolescents with intellectual disability ages 5 to 16 for whom the Supports Intensity Scale–Children's Version–Catalan Translation was completed was used, in combination with data from the U.S. standardization sample, to examine measurement invariance and latent differences in the Catalonian sample. Results suggest that the same set of items can be used to measure support needs across U.S. and Catalonia samples and that there are age-related differences in support needs in the Catalonia sample, particularly between children ages 5 to 10 and 11 to 16 years of age. This differs from findings with the U.S. sample, where differences were found in a greater number of age cohorts. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Abstract This article posits that Pier Paolo Pasolini’s long engagement with Catalonia offers important insights into his practice as a poet, filmmaker, and thinker about language, as well as explaining the nature of his influence on other European cinemas. The first part of the article focusses on the special issue “Fiore di poeti catalani” of Quaderno romanzo alongside Pasolini’s poetry in and advocacy for the Friulan language. The second part of the article focusses on Joaquín (Joaquim) Jordà’s translation of Pasolini, published as Cine de poesía contra cine de prosa, alongside the emergence of the Barcelona school of filmmakers, of which Jordà was a part. Overall, the article argues that although there was clearly an Italian influence on Catalan cinema of the 1960s and 1970s, throughout the long course of his career there was a distinctly Catalan quality to Pasolini’s thought.

Nonetheless, until recently linguists stated a lack of connection of the fields of language ecology and language policy. The study of language and ecology has not yet become a matter of public interest; it only appears in scientific publications and the media using startling ecological metaphors such as threat of extinction, etc. This contribution analyses the language used both by professional linguists and laypeople in publications and in the public debate on the conflicts in Spanish and Catalan bilingualism in the decade before the constitutional and supreme courts ruled against the prevalence of the Catalan language in Catalonia (1999-2009). The decade analysed here can be characterized by a sensation of growing linguistic conflicts that manifested, for example, through heated debates over what Catalans perceived as life threatening for the Catalan language, on the one hand, and reactions such as demands for the introduction of additional teaching hours to prevent the alleged extinction of Spanish in Catalonia, on the other hand. The Catalan society is reliving the ghost of extinction of their language—probably reinforced by publications which denounce a continuous reduction of living space and the disappearance of more and more niches of the Catalan language. On the other hand, Castilian activists (and among them some linguists) maintain there is a battle the Castilian language in Catalonia has to win in order to survive the said-to-be ferocious reduction of its vital space and the asserted institutionalized suffocation or extermination of the Spanish language. The texts analysed in this contribution belong to a text series which regarding its content and aims corresponds to a reduced number of triggering reference texts. The aim is to determine the importance of the language of ecology in this field and the usage of these elements by both sides, those denouncing the threat of the Castilian language and those fearing the risk of extinction of the Catalan language. It will be shown that in the debate over the struggle for life of Catalan and Spanish in the Catalan speaking areas, the language of ecology and evolution is heavily used and that the re-contextualization of Catalan metaphors in the analysed Spanish texts is systematic.

The identification of adequate wastewater treatment for small communities is a complex problem since it demands a combination of data from different sources, such as aspects of the community and landscape, the receiving environment and the available wastewater treatment technologies. The Catalan Water Agency (Agència Catalana de l'Aigua) considered using an EDSS (Environmental Decision Support System) as a tool to help water managers select the most adequate treatment for the urban wastewater of nearly 3,500 small communities in Catalonia (Spain). From that moment, EDSS was applied to all the river basins in Catalonia. In this paper the authors present the results obtained for the 76 small communities located in one of these river basins: the Fluvia River Basin. The characteristics of the community used in the reasoning process of the EDSS, the list of selected wastewater treatment alternatives, the technical environmental justification for the selected treatments and the reasons for discarding, favouring or disadvantaging them are presented. Finally, some results for the Fluvia River Basin are compared with those obtained in other Catalan river basins with different characteristics in order to evaluate which are the significant features in identifying adequate wastewater treatments.

Abstract: This article analyzes Francisco Rovira Beleta’s film Los Tarantos (1963), a Spanish-language adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet , arguing that the film’s representation of Catalan Roma subtly advances a critique of Franquista nationalism. The film is set in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, and is remembered for its preservation in film of the Somorrostro neighborhood, an area of Barcelona’s beachfront that was inhabited by poor Romani people but torn down in 1966, as well as for starring flamenco legend, Carmen Amaya, as Angustias (Lady Montague). Los Tarantos retells the feud of the Capulets and Montagues as a more recent, violent affair between the Tarantos and Zorongos. This article argues that, through its representation of bullfighting and flamenco, the film critiques the packaging of Spain by Franco’s government for tourist consumption. Los Tarantos contrasts bullfighting, which becomes evocative of violent machismo in its linkage to the film’s villain Curro Picado (Tybalt/Paris), with flamenco, which is positioned as a resistance to Franco’s nationalism due to its Romani roots. The film uses Shakespeare as a mask for its critique of Franquista machismo and the touristic takeover of Spain. Set in Catalonia, and made by a Catalan director, Los Tarantos critiques Spanish nationalism, suggesting possibilities for Catalonian self-determination and centering Catalan Roma and their political demands.

Salvador Espriu is one of the main authors of the revival of Catalan theater after the civil war of 1936. In a climate of political and linguistic repression, he wrote Primera història d'Esther in a language that seemed doomed to death. He created one of the main linguistic monuments of modern Catalan literary history and a magnificent synthesis of the biblical myth of Esther and the history of Catalonia in Franco's Spain. The article aims to highlight the cultural and linguistic aspects of the work, relating it to Espriu's desire for universalism, and to approach the author's intentions. As in his poetry, Espriu relates the fate of the Jewish to that of the Catalan people. He uses the double effect of "theater within theater" and lets the action take place on two levels. The first, that of the theater: the present, Sinera, the myth of Sinera, the spectators, the people, the Catalans, Catalan culture. The second, that of theater within theater: the past, Susa, Esther’s myth, the 'observed', the puppets, the Persians and the Jews, Western culture.

The mutual reception of cultures is a very interesting chapter in the history of mankind. Regarding the perception of stateless nations by other nations, this perception depends on the public opinion that can be inclined towards Jacobinists’ uniformitarianism or towards the solidarity defense of cultural and national diversity. In Europe, the language map is still too closely linked to the map of the states. In an analogous way, the words Catalunya (Catalonia) or català (Catalan) remain frequently hidden under the words Spain or Spanish, which makes it difficult for Europeans to fully acknowledge the differential Catalan fact. It is true that in recent years the Catalan presence in Germany has increased considerably; but it is still very far from the level expected in a country that has the Catalan Countries as its first tourist destination. Catalans pose a difficult problem for foreigners to understand; they want to be considered as a people with their own identity, but they have not decided to lead a truly autonomous and independent social and political life.

Abstract Normative literature on the Catalan crisis is largely occupied with the conflict’s central legalistic problem: can political units like Catalonia be allowed to split off from Spain unilaterally? This article reframes the issue and asks why secessionist Catalans should ever abide by Spanish legal constraints, given that Spanish law is precisely the institution they are politically trying to get rid of. It focuses on the anti-secessionist role played by the Spanish Constitutional Court between 2010 and 2017 and studies three arguments why Catalans supposedly have to accept the Court’s authority. The article contends that two arguments—the “mutual benefit argument” and the “law and democracy” argument—will not be independently persuasive to Catalan secessionists. Instead, the Constitutional Court’s authority must ultimately be grounded in a different type of argument: the “law and order argument.” Secessionist Catalans’ supposed duty to obey the orders of the Constitutional Court is ultimately not rooted in a positive service provided by the Court, but in the disruptive effects of disobeying. That exposes an explanatory defect in Joseph Raz’s influential theory of authority, which seeks to ground authority exercises in a concept in prior reason or their capacity to make our life better. That conceptualization misses the key decisionistic element to political authority: its capacity to constitute our reasons, that is, to define the terms that give meaning to our evaluations.

After an outline of present-day ‘glocalization problems’ of the European Community this article analyses the problem of whether the centralizing policy of the Spanish Bourbon government after the War of Spanish Succession provides historical evidence on the origins of contemporary Catalan nationalism, as often argued, or not. Referring briefly to the medieval and early modern imperial traditions of both the Aragonese kingdoms, especially of Catalonia and its predominant city of Barcelona, and the Castilian kingdoms, the article argues that during the 18th century the Crown made strong efforts to integrate Catalans into the imperial government and trade and spent large quantities of fiscal income in the modernization of Catalonia as a central base of its Mediterranean policy. Therefore, the historical origins of present-day nationalism have to be explained in the context of more recent historical phenomena in the context of the so-called ‘uncompleted Spanish national project’.

Resum: En aquest article realitzarem una anàlisi quantitativa, semàntica i comparativa dels conceptes ‘Espanya’ i ‘Catalunya’ en les seves formes terminològiques singulars i plurals pròpies dels idiomes català, castellà i llatí, contingudes en els dietaris institucionals del Consell de Cent de Barcelona i de la Diputació del General de Catalunya. La cronologia analitzada serà l’albada del segle XVIII, període convuls en què es produí la mort del monarca hispànic Carles II d’Àustria (1700), l’entronització dels Borbó (1701) i la consegüent guerra de successió per la Monarquia d’Espanya (1702-1715) que es batallà al Principat de Catalunya entre 1704 i 1714. Els resultats de l’estudi ofereixen noves perspectives sobre alguns aspectes del debat historiogràfic desfermat per la celebració del Tricentenari del 1714, i que gira al voltant de com era la identitat col·lectiva dels catalans a inicis del segle XVIII.Paraules clau: Història conceptual, Espanya, Catalunya, Barcelona, Guerra de Successió espanyola.Abstract: In this article we will carry out a quantitative, semantic and comparative analysis of the concepts ‘Spain’ and ‘Catalonia’ in its singular and plural forms of the Catalan, Spanish and Latin languages, contained in the institutional diaries of the Consell de Cent of Barcelona and the Deputation of the General of Catalonia. The chronology analysed will be the start of the 18th century, a period in which the death of the Spanish monarch Charles II of Austria (1700), the enthronement of the Bourbons (1701) and the consequent war of succession for the Monarchy of Spain (1702-1715) that was fought in the Principality of Catalonia between 1704 and 1714. As we speak about Family Law, I want to begin my exposition with a concise picture of the Catalan society and the “Catalan family”. Our concept of family, like other neighboring societies, has changed substantially in relation to the preceding generations. Catalonia today is an aging society with rather low fertility, increasing divorce rates and a large increase in the number of single households (the result of an increased life expectancy). Furthermore, the man is no longer the only household member who contributes to household income; in more and more families both men and women engage in paid employment. The female employment rate has risen in a big way, which explains that the average age for a first marriage is over thirty years for both women and men. This fact means in practice that Catalonian couples have few children: one, two, or as a heroic common project, three.

Un grand nombre de Catalans se deplaçaient de Barcelone, Tortose, Tarragone et d'autres villes, principale­ment de la côte méditerranéenne, mais aussi de l'arrière-pays, pour aller s'installer dans la ville de Dubrovnik, sur la côte adriatique. Cet article se propose d'étudier d'une part les échanges économiques entre les villes catalanes et Dubrovnik et, d'autre part, de reconstituer le destin des fami­lles catalanes et des individus, qui choisissaient de s'expatrier dans cette ville slave, loin de leur pays et de leur ville d'origine. L'auteur s'appuie sur les documents des archives catalanes, principalement des Archives de la Couronne d'Aragon et des Archives Notariales de Barcelone, ainsi que des Archives de Dubrovnik, pour presenter l'exportation catalane à Dubrovnik (laine) et l'exportation ragusaine dans les villes de Catalogne (esclaves, métaux precieux, bois, etc.). Abstract In spite of middle-class men’s presumed absence from consumer culture during the nineteenth century, the role of consumerism in the articulation of patterns of masculinity is especially evident in the case of Catalonia. In industrial and metropolitan Barcelona, products often framed or thought of as “feminine”—such as clothing and fashion accessories—were also central to entrepreneurial masculinity and bourgeois men’s social mobility during the late nineteenth century. It is therefore unsurprising that the commercialization of menswear and masculine accessories was notable in the Catalan context, given what that region’s rapid urbanization owed to the manufacture, sale, and display of fashionable commodities ranging from jackets and shirts to walking sticks and home and office décor in small shops and department stores, particularly during the second half of the nineteenth century. By examining commercial ephemera produced and distributed in Barcelona, alongside theories of male homosociality and empire, this essay demonstrates how Spanish men—specifically Catalans—commercialized fantasies of bourgeois masculinity, thus contributing to the consolidation of cultures of consumption during the final decades of the nineteenth century. Visual representations of masculine accessories in department store catalogs, advertisements, and newspaper illustrations are analyzed to argue that bourgeois men, through their shared affective interactions with material accessories, branded Spain as a capitalist nation and, with their consumption of tobacco-related paraphernalia in particular, as an imperial power, even as that power was waning.

Catalunya va viure l’1 d’octubre del 2017 un dels moments informatius més importants de la seva història. El Govern català va habilitar, desobeint el Tribunal Constitucional, 2.243 col∙legis electorals per preguntar als ciutadans si estaven a favor o en contra de la inde­pendència de Catalunya. El fet que els principals òrgans dels poders judicial i polític d’Espanya consideressin il∙legal aquest referèndum no va fer desistir els organitzadors. La jornada va estar mar­cada per la gent que va mobilitzar-se per votar i per l’actuació de la policia espanyola que va intervenir amb força. La recerca analitza com un viral de You­Tube, per denunciar irregularitats en la consulta, conté tots els ingredients per considerar-lo la principal fake news d’aquell dia. L’anàlisi es contextualitza amb opinions sobre la cobertura del re­ferèndum de quatre periodistes catalans entrevistats (Crónica Global, El País i Ara). També es confronten els relats de TV3 i TVE, en el Telenotícies i el Tele­diario. Mentre la televisió catalana va presentar l’1-O de manera èpica, per la resistència popular per salvaguardar uns drets que simbolitzaven les urnes enfront les càrregues policials; la televi­sió pública espanyola va emfatitzar que va ser una acció il∙legal, sense garanties democràtiques. Votes in the Streets on October 1, 2017 in Catalonia: An Example of Covert Fake News On October 1st, 2017 (1-O), Catalonia experienced one of the most important newsworthy moments in its history. The Catalan government set up 2.243 polling stations to conduct a referendum on Catalonia’s independence, thereby disobeying Spain’s Constitutional Court. Although the main bodies of the Spa­nish judiciary and political powers con­sidered the referendum illegal, the orga­nizers persisted. The day was marked by people’s mobilizations, which consisted of defending polling stations and pro­tecting voters from police intervention. With this study, we seek to analyse how a YouTube video, which reported irregu­larities about the referendum and went viral, contains all the ingredients to be considered fake news. The analysis is contextualized with opinions about the media coverage of the referendum by four interviews with Catalan journalists (Crónica Global, El País, Ara). The ac­counts of TV3 (Televisió de Catalunya) and TVE (Televisión Española), in Tele­notícies (TV3’s news) and Telediario(TVE’s news) are also juxtaposed. While the Catalan public television (TV3) pre­sented the 1-O in an epic way, stressing the citizens’ resistance to safeguard the rights as symbolized by the ballot boxes against the Spanish police, the Spanish public television (TVE) emphasised that 1-O was an illegal referendum lacking democratic legitimacy.

Attempts to show national traits in phraseology have not hitherto been very convincing. However, it cannot be denied that they do reflect the peculiarities of a specific culture. From the comparison of Catalan and German proverbs and idioms for the pictures of the month of April on the one hand and for the sea and the ocean on the other hand, the following differences can be determined: For April, the seasonally more advanced stage of plant and animal development in Catalonia finds its resonance in the phraseology. The German proverbs and proverbial sayings emphasize the instability of the month (e.g. with regard to weather conditions), in contrast to the Catalan ones, which emphasize more its insidiousness. As for the sea, for the Catalans it is a source of wealth, honour and health. These images are missing in German, where, on the other hand, seashores and borders play a major role. The German phrasemes for both April and the sea often have a figurative meaning as well.

Abstract This paper focuses on Northern Catalonia, a territory ceded to France by Spain through the signing of the Treaty of Pyrenees in 1659. The focus is placed not only on the demography and the number of speakers using the Catalan language in Northern Catalonia but also on the linguistic politics and the use of the Catalan language in various areas of social life, especially in education. The school plays the most important role in the revitalization of the Catalan language, and without its active contribution, it is not possible to restore bilingualism in French Catalonia.

Since his death Bernhard Schädel has only rarely been mentioned in Catalanist publications and in handbooks on Romance studies, despite being a pioneer of Catalan philology and pioneer of the consolidation of the Catalan language at the beginning of the 20th century. In the Catalan countries, his work is always discussed alongside that of his Majorcan friend, the philologist Antoni M. Alcover; two of Alcover's most important achievements, which made a decisive contribution to the aforementioned consolidation, namely the Diccionari català-valencià-balear and the "Primer Congrés de la Llengua Catalana" (1906), were greatly influenced by Schädel as a scientific advisor and collaborator. As a young lecturer in Romance languages ​​in Halle, Schädel published several studies on Catalan phonetics and dialectology. However, he was primarily a publicist and the initiator of scientific projects. Various circumstances –including differences of opinion with the three Catalan scholarship holders he had brought to Halle, his appointment as a professor at the Colonial Institute in Hamburg, and then the First World War– led to a cooling off in his relations with Catalonia after 1909. He then devoted himself more to the whole of the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. He died unexpectedly in 1926, in the midst of his work as professor at the University of Hamburg and as director of the Ibero-American Institute, which he had founded.

This paper examines the linguistic rights of Catalonia as stated in the Statutes of Autonomy of Catalonia of 1979 and 2006 and the Spanish Constitution of 1978. In addition, it studies the ruling of the Constitutional Court of Spain of 2010 which annulled or reinterpreted articles of the Statute of 2006, including Article 6.1 which declares Catalan as the “preferential” language of Catalonia. The paper offers some suggestions for improving language rights for speakers of Catalan, both within the Spanish state and the European Union, to help de-escalate language conflict between Catalonia and the Spanish state.

Abstract Catalonia is well known for being a bilingual region with language policies that give full support to promoting Catalan. More recently, the number of languages spoken in Catalonia has risen significantly due to immigration flows, while immigration policies encourage all citizens living in Catalonia to be able to communicate in Catalan with the public Administration. The same immigration policies, however, also acknowledge that interpreting (or intercultural mediation) may be necessary to facilitate immigrants’ rights to access public services during the first few years they are living in Catalonia. This article analyses the relationship between a minoritized language (Catalan), a dominant language (Spanish) and a group of recently arrived languages (Standard Chinese and other Chinese varieties) from the perspective of public service interpreting. It discusses some of the results of an empirical qualitative research which included: (a) interviews with public service interpreters and intercultural mediators working with Chinese living in Catalonia, (b) interviews with managers and coordinators in charge of interpreting or mediation services, and (c) questionnaires answered by Chinese users of public services in Catalonia. This research depicts a complex reality: it not only reflects interpreters’ and managers’ biases towards Spanish or Catalan, often motivated by their place of origin or life experience, but also the challenges when dealing with linguistic variation, i.e. the variety of languages (geolects and mutually unintelligible dialects) included under the umbrella term of Chinese.

The article presents a study of the role of Cuba and its influ-ence on the Catalan national movement in the late 19th to ear-ly 20th centuries. Complex socio-political processes, identity formation, and the development of separatist ideas in the con-text of Catalan-Cuban relations were analyzed. Catalonia sup-ported the Spanish government and Castilian nationalism as long as it held colonies, pursued protectionist policies, and acted in the interest of Catalan capital. The catastrophe of 1898 had a significant impact on Catalan nationalism, prompt-ing the development of the idea of regional independence and its desire for greater autonomy. Special attention is paid to the role of Catalan emigrants in Cuba, their influence on the for-mation of separatist organizations, and financial support for the independence movement. The study also highlights the importance of cultural exchanges between Catalonia and Cuba in preserving Catalan identity. It also underscores the key role of Catalan emigrants in the development of Catalan national-ism and the struggle for autonomy, as well as their contribu-tion to the creation of the 1932 Statut of Catalonia.

AbstractPro-independence parties won a narrow majority of parliamentary seats in the December 2017 elections in Catalonia. Should Catalonia at some point become independent from Spain, the respective status of Catalan and Spanish is a major issue about which there is significant divergence of opinion, not least within the independence movement in Catalonia. This article approaches the question of language officiality in a hypothetically independent Catalonia through the theoretical lens of linguistic authority, particularly the concepts of anonymity and authenticity. The data, an on-line discussion thread following an interview with a Catalan language activist, reveal a striking diversity of language ideological positions on both the nature of linguistic authority in Catalonia as things stand, as well as how such authority should be constructed and managed in the event of independence, particularly as regards questions of officiality. Abstract.IMMIGRATION AND SCHOOL IN MULTILINGUAL CONTEXTS. THE CASE OF CATALONIA AND ANDORRAThe social changes in recent years have particularly affected Catalonia and Andorra. Both contexts, despite sharing the same interest in consolidating Catalan, manage differently the role of this language at education and institutional levels. Whereas in Catalonia, Catalan shares official status with Castilian, Andorra is the only country in the world where it is the official language. Anyway, both the geographical proximity to Spain and France, and the continuous migratory movements have led to the present reality in which this language coexists with Castilian, French and Portuguese. Specifically, official data from the Government of Andorra reveals that more than half of the population is of foreign origin, figures which correlate with the number of immigrant students. Similarly, Catalonia is the Spanish Autonomous Community with the highest number of immigrants, a fact that is highly reflected linguistically and culturally in schools, just as in the case of Andorra. These two territories also share the peculiarity of relying on education systems where besides Catalan, other vehicular languages ??are present. In this sense, while Catalonia promotes the bilingual education Catalan-Castilian, there are schools in Andorra which belong to three different educational systems: French, Spanish and Andorran, where the main language of instruction is the corresponding official language of each country. Within this background frame, to the extent to which students’ language attitudes are significant for language learning and self-identifications, this communication contextualized the social and educational realities of Catalonia and Andorra, two contexts where various studies focused on the analysis of the language attitudes of native and immigrant students were developed.Keywords: Immigration, plurilingualism, Catalonia, Andorra, bilingual education.Resumen.Los cambios sociales acontecidos en los últimos años han afectado de manera singular a Cataluña y Andorra. Ambos contextos, a pesar de compartir el mismo interés por consolidar la lengua catalana, gestionan de manera diferente el papel de dicha lengua a nivel educativo e institucional. Mientras que en Cataluña el catalán comparte cooficialidad con el castellano, el Principado de Andorra es el único país del mundo donde es la lengua oficial. En todo caso, la proximidad geográfica con España y Francia, junto con los continuos movimientos migratorios, ha llevado a dicha lengua a convivir con el castellano, el francés y el portugués. Concretamente, los datos oficiales del Govern d’Andorra determinan que más de la mitad de la población es de origen extranjero, cifras que se correlacionan, aproximadamente, con un el número de escolares inmigrantes. Por su parte, Cataluña es las Comunidad Autónoma española con el mayor número de extranjeros de toda España, peculiaridad que, tal y como sucede en el caso andorrano, se refleja lingüística y culturalmente en las escuelas de manera destacada. Dos territorios que, además, tienen la singularidad de ampararse en unos sistemas educativos donde además del catalán coexisten otras lenguas vehiculares. En este sentido, mientras que Cataluña fomenta la educación bilingüe catalán-castellano, en Andorra existen escuelas pertenecientes a tres sistemas educativos diferentes: el francés, el español y el andorrano, donde en cada uno de ellos la principal lengua de instrucción es la correspondiente a la oficial de cada país. Con este marco de fondo, en la medida en que las actitudes lingüísticas de los escolares son significativas en relación al aprendizaje lingüístico y las autoidentificaciones, la presente comunicación contextualiza las realidades sociales y educativas de Cataluña y Andorra, dos contextos donde se han desarrollado diversas investigaciones centradas en el análisis de las actitudes lingüísticas del alumnado autóctono e inmigrante.Palabras Clave: Inmigración, plurilingüismo, Cataluña, Principado de Andorra, Educación bilingüe.
