Joutet, Karim.
This work builds up on the fact that the word « immigrant » is present on the political and intellectual Catalan discourse since the beginning of the XXth century to reference Spaniards coming to live in Catalonia. The appellation chosen by this discourse to name immigrants coming from other regions of Spain is openly contradictory with its definition that implies crossing a national frontier. The distinction regarding place of origin allows for anotherone: Identity. This difference is created and sustained by these two groups living under the same territory and sharing the Spanish nationality, but whose place of birth is inside or outside Catalonia. Developing an image of the « immigrant » that subsisted until the XXI st century, the catalan discourse insists on the fact that this flow of people come from an outside. Expressing oneself over this subject allows for an original vision of the Catalan society, understood as multicultural, bicultural or as a unique community. The common point between this different ways of conceiving catalanity resides on the affirmation of the receptor group ´s coherence and autonomy and its capacity to host others, in spite of the fear that may arise. Thinking about the immigration phenomenon enables the discourse to affirm its own identity and the existence of a catalan nation. The image of the newcomer is immerse in between the classification struggles and appears as an instrument that allows for an imposition of a national ideology or a way of conceiving the catalan society in the political or academic discourse. We are witnessing a slippage from the first one towards the second, synonym of a transition to historical memory of a presentation that was controversial all along the XXth century. Finally, research has shown the implications of the mentioned Spanish « immigration » in the debate surrounding the catalan identity construction. First off, by its presence and the debate it creates, forcing the interdiscursive system to place a series of power relationships aiming at defining its own identity. Also participating physically, as being visible as « immigration », taking a key role in the process of building identity, as it was the case during the Diadaof 1977. It was visible as well in the catalan political sphere : Francisco Candel is an example among others. The phenomenon ´s participation during the debate created by the political and intellectual discourse is made visible also through contribution of the generations born in Catalonia. As we went along the analysis, we realized they were no longer considered as « immigrants » nor as a problem but as a contribution to Catalonia. The second generation is active in its reconnaissance work of « immigration », especially through the scientific studies starting on the eighties. The observation of the names of the universities who participated in institutionalizing the representation of the « immigrant » allows us to further pursue this affirmation, that has to be confirmed or infirmed by complementary studies.
Fullana, Olga. "La gramàtica inèdita de Pau Cardellach i Busquets." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Girona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/398239.
Full textThis thesis focuses on the edition and study of the Catalan Grammar of Pau Cardellach i Busquets (1818-1879), an unpublished work of which there is only one copy, handwritten, today at the University of Girona. Cardellach's grammar, which only known by indirect references, is an original work that exemplifies a different outlook on the Catalan language than those we knew so far in the nineteenth century. Its study helps to better define the late process of grammatical encoding of Catalan, and enriches the history of philology of Catalan. The necessary work to contextualize this book has also demanded a thorough study of its author and the circumstances that led to his grammar. Therefore, the thesis is divided internally into three sections: a) the bio-bibliographic study of Pau Cardellach and the circumstances in which he produced his Catalan Grammar; b) the critical edition of the work, with attention to all material respects, to the textual problems and to interventions to make it available to scholars; and c) the detailed contents and peculiarities of grammar, and their relevance to contemporary grammatical context study

Chinese students have constituted one of the largest groups in the study-abroad community. Catalonia, as a region with abundant academic resources, has also become a popular study-abroad destination for them. Catalonia is a bilingual society with two official languages, Catalan and Spanish, in which students have contact with the Catalan language. So far there have been very few studies devoted to examining the learning of Catalan by the Chinese community in Catalonia. In this study, we try to fill this gap by exploring the Catalan-learning situation by Chinese graduate students in Catalonia who have Spanish and English as additional languages. An ethnographic study is carried out and we have collected data that includes semi-structured interviews, screenshots, and screen recordings of their learning of Catalan in digital environments. With the data collected, in the first place, we analyze their motivation with the L2MSS theoretical framework as well as their identity and attitudes towards Catalan and the sociolinguistic situation in Catalonia. Secondly, we also analyze their learning forms (formal, informal learning, with technology, etc.) and the difficulties they have encountered during the learning process. Finally, we analyze the strategies and resources they have used and their needs in learning this minority language. We conclude that Chinese graduate students in Catalonia are motivated to learn Catalan by both ideal L2 self and ought-to L2 self. Most of them have positive or neutral attitudes towards Catalan and they support the protection and revitalization of minority languages. Despite the neutral-positive attitudes, most of the participants only have the Chinese identity without cultivating new identities. When learning Catalan in the classroom, the participants perceive the difference between the teaching methods between China and Catalonia, and the cultural difference between Chinese and European peers perceived in the classroom also affects their motivation and attitudes. When they learn Catalan outside the classroom, they take advantage of all the available resources and different strategies to facilitate their learning. However, they have also encountered some difficulties during the learning of Catalan, such as the lack of Chinese-Catalan linguistic resources, the lack of motivation, and the lack of opportunities to practice oral expression.

Full textThe word "goigs" designates the poems in the catalan vernacular which, since the end of the middle ages in catalonia, have been sung during church services to celebrate the "joys" of the virgin and the saints. These joys are the seven joys of the virgin, from her salutation by the angel to her assumption, and the saint's celestial joys in compensation for their sufferings. The "goigs" are distributed in the form of printed leaflets with the hagiographic poem, the appropriate verse and prayer from the latin service, and the image of the saint. The "goigs" are a holy writing of the angel's word, adapted to the historical conditions which are as much literary as social or spiritualtheir meaning dealing with death and transition may be discerned by the analysis of their textual configuration, of the saint's image, of the user's position before the altar. Performed by a legitimate officiant, thanks to a gift of money, before the saint's "powerful body", relic or miraculous statue, they form part of the symbolical exchanges bearing on ideas of death and made by each social parish group, according to the utopia proposed by the church. To immobilize the angel's word, the "goigs" cannot exist without bodies: the bodies of the saints comply with the writing's bodies of the leaflets, where the written letter splits into a projected figure of the saints, and the immobile bodies of the faithful
Vila, Serra Iolanda 1979. "L'obra teatral completa de Miquel de Palol i Felip (1885-1965). Estudi i edició." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Girona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/398030.
Full textThe aim of the doctoral thesis presented under the title of "L'obra teatral completa de Miquel de Palol i Felip (1885-1965). Estudi i edició" is to present a study and a critical edition of seven theatrical texts by Miquel de Palol (1885-1965), an author from Girona who, after starting out on an ambitious and promising career as a poet, storyteller, dramatist, journalist and having formed part of the modernist group of Girona at the start of the 20th century, has been relegated, from an historical point of view, to provincialism. Starting from a historical contextualisation of the state of Catalan theatre from the end of the 19th century to the 1930s, the figure of the Girona playwright and his theatrical work, which, with some interruptions, spans a period of more than thirty years, has been located and positioned within that context. Thus it presents, from an historical perspective, the literary study of each of the pieces that make up the dramatic corpus of Palol, a particular universe that often engages, above all in the salon theatre production of the 1920s, with the concerns of the bourgeois audience which filled the halls for their premieres. Other works, of youth and maturity, respond to other, undoubtedly more personal, ambitions without putting aside the writer’s unique style and which means that, almost a century later, one can draw a transversal line which, from a narrative point of view, unites all the pieces. In addition to the study described above, the reception the premieres of the works received in the press has been reviewed and, as a consequence, a more accurate portrait has been able to be drawn of the dramaturgy of the author. In the second part of this work the seven dramatic pieces are published and the criteria that have been applied when collecting the work and establishing the text are explained, taking into account that there are sometimes multiple versions of these -published or unpublished: Les dugues cartes (unpublished, 1899), Cadenes (unpublished, 1912), Senyoreta Enigma (1919), L’enemic amor (1920), Les petites tragèdies (1921), El clavell roig (unpublished, 1925) and Jueus (1935). In conclusion, then, this work places the complete dramatic works of Miquel de Palol within reach of the modern reader with the aim of raising awareness about the lesser-known facet of the writer and of helping the theatrical legacy of Palol find its rightful place in contemporary Catalan literature
