This study documents and analyses the music-selling and publishing industry in London from 1780 to the end of the Georgian period as reflected in publishers' catalogues of music for sale. It assembles the histories and activities of these music publishers in relation to the society they served. Catalogues inform us quite precisely not only of the activities of music publishers, but also the role they played in accommodating, influencing, expanding and educating the contemporary musical taste. In addition, catalogues provide documentary evidence of compositions in issues no longer extant, and even of some works themselves at least by the lesser-known composers. Nearly 600 catalogues in over 1100 states, issued by over 100 London music-publishing firms from 1780 to 1837 have been gathered from the British Library, London; the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and Cambridge University Library, Cambridge. Arguably, publishers' catalogues are among the sharpest yet least appreciated mirrors of changes in musical taste. This study attempts to bring them into the foreground, place them in their proper historical perspective and establish their role in musicological research.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis can be summarised under the following headings: Unlocking the Scott Collection to the music world The University of Stellenbosch is in the possession of the valuable Scott Collection, as was bought from the estate of Gerrit Wessels, the beneficiary of Commander Michael Scott. The latter emigrated to South Africa because of health reasons, where he played a valuable role in the music circles of Cape Town. Music editions, manuscripts, gramophone records, and writings on music form about 20% of the Scott Collection. Providing music editions with RISM numbers and the international implication thereof The research had to determine whether editions could be listed in the RISM. This international inventory of first and early music editions lists all known and existing editions before and up to the year 1800. There are editions in the Scott Collection for example, which are some of the only few first edition copies in the world, A detailed description of the RISM and its activities are discussed in detail in Chapter 2. Creating an user-friendly catalogue for the US Music Library It was considered a great matter of importance to create an user-friendly catalogue for research purposes. The editions discussed in this thesis are therefore presented in table-form. Introducing further research possibilities Through the survey done on the applicable music editions, it was discovered that 111 editions in the Scott Collections could be listed in the RISM. Seeing that no editions harboured in South Africa are listed in the RISM at present, this matter are naturally of international importance. This also creates opportunities for further research and international publications. Conservation of old paper It became evident during the course of the research survey that the University of Stellenbosch was unaware of the monetary and international historical value of the music editions in the Scott Collection. The collection is in danger of perishing, as it is not preserved according to international standards of conserving old paper. It is also not adequately protected from fire and theft hazards. This matter and some suggestions to improve the situation, were brought under the attention of the university authorities (see Chapter 9).
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van die tesis kan opgesom word onder die volgende opskrifte: Ontsluiting van die Scott-Versameling aan die musiek wereld Die Universiteit van Stellenbosch beskik oor die Scott-Versameling soos aangekoop uit die boedel van Gerrit Wessels, die begunstigde van Kommandeur Michael Scott. Laasgenoemde het weens gesondheidsredes na Suid-Afrika geimigreer, waar hy 'n waardevolle rol in die Kaapse musiekkringe gespeel het. Musiek-edisies, manuskripte, gramofoonplate, en geskrifte oor musiek vorm omtrent 20% van die Scott-Versameling. Die voorsiening van musiek-edisies van RISM nommers en die internasionale implikasie daarvan. Die navorsing moes bepaal of daar edisies is wat in die RISM gelys kon word. Omdat geen edisies wat in Suid-Afrika gehuisves word, huidiglik in die RISM gelys word nie, is hierdie saak uiteraard van internasionale belang. Bewaring van ou papier Gedurende die navorsing het dit aan die lig gekom dat die Universiteit van Stellenbosch onbewus is van die monetere en internasionaal-historiese waarde van die musiek-edisies in die Scott-Versameling. ·Die versameling staan die gevaar om tot niet te gaan, omdat dit nie bewaar word volgens internasionale standaarde vir die bewaring van ou papier nie. Dit word ook nie voldoende beskerm teen brandgevaar en diefstal nie. Die aangeleentheid, asook 'n paar voorstelle om die omstandighede te verbeter, is onder die aandag van die universiteitowerhede gebring (sien Hoofstuk 9).

Montaner y Simón, que inició su actividad editorial a mediados del siglo XIX, fue pionera en la publicación de obras lujosas en formato monumental, tanto de carácter científico como de historia, grandes clásicos de la literatura universal y narrativa contemporánea. Todas ellas editadas con el máximo esmero en el diseño y utilizando para su ilustración los avances tecnológicos más punteros que las Artes gráficas industriales del momento proporcionaron al sector editorial. Para su catálogo contó con los autores nacionales más prestigiosos de la época y tradujo la literatura extranjera que el público de lengua castellana ansiaba conocer. Desde 1868 y a lo largo del siglo XX, Montaner y Simón fue considerada una de las mayores editoriales barcelonesas y se ganó el reconocimiento de todos los estamentos intelectuales, sociales y políticos, aquí y más allá de nuestras fronteras: en el resto de España y en los países hispanoamericanos. Montaner y Simón fue, sin duda, una de las editoriales más influyentes de nuestra historia cultural, que supo anticiparse a los tiempos y ser innovadora en formas y contenidos, aportando a nuestra sociedad toda la riqueza artística y literaria que marcaban las corrientes del resto de Europa.
Montaner y Simón, which initiated its activity in the middle of the 19th century, was pioneering in the publication of luxurious works in monumental format of scientific and historical character, great classics from the universal literature, and contemporary narratives. All were edited with maximum care in design and utilizing the latest technological advances. Their catalogue possessed the most prestigious national authors of the epoch and translated the foreign literature that the public of Castilian language was longing to know. From 1868 through the 20th century, Montaner y Simón was considered to be one of the major publishing houses in Barcelona. It gained the recognition of all the intellectual, social and political estates, here and beyond Spain’s borders. Montaner y Simón was undoubtedly one of the most influential publishing houses of our cultural history; the firm anticipated trends and was innovative in form and content. Montaner y Simón made great contributions to the entire artistic and literary wealth that was marking the currents of the rest of Europe.

The Master's thesis follows professional work of Jaroslav Pospisil. Briefly presented the Pospisil's family from Jan Hostivít Pospisil, who founded the family business, to Jaroslav's successor Jaroslav Pospisil junior. Considerable attention will be paid to the composition of the editorial program. It will not be missed out nor Pospíšil's social functions, eg. Association of booksellers and and publishers.
