Abstract:
Between late 2018 and early 2020, in a short period of time, two events converged in the Basque literary system, that brought women writers from the periphery to the centre. Firstly, the Euskadi Award of Literature, the most renowned award of the Basque literary system, drew attention to the work of women writers. In 2018, Eider Rodríguez (1977) won the award with her book of short stories Bihotz handiegia. In 2019, Irati Elorrieta (1979) was the winner with her novel Neguko argiak / Luces de invierno. Moreover, the 2020 Award went for Karmele Jaio (1970) and her novel Aitaren etxea. At the same time the aforementioned process was happening, a phenomenon of globalisation and translation of those works, and other works by women writers, was taking place. The translation into Spanish of those works was well received by readers and the book reviewers in magazines and newspapers. Katixa Agirre (1981) published in Spanish her work Las madres in 2019, and has been very well received, with the publication of five editions. In the same year Un corazón demasiado grande by Eider Rodriguez was published, which included a perspective on her work, and in 2020 La casa del padre by Karmele Jaio was brought to light. In addition, children’s poetry by Leire Bilbao won the Award of the Booksellers Association. This volume, conceived and written in 2020, analyses the narrative and sociological keys of the works of the four aforementioned writers. We have added an investigation on the work of Maixa Zugasti L. A. A., because of the treatment of gender violence, and two interviews with Eider Rodriguez and Karmele Jaio that give an inside view into their work.

Abstract:
Event structures are central in Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence research: people can easily refer to changes in the world, identify their participants, distinguish relevant information, and have expectations of what can happen next. Part of this process is based on mechanisms similar to narratives, which are at the heart of information sharing. But it remains difficult to automatically detect events or automatically construct stories from such event representations. This book explores how to handle today's massive news streams and provides multidimensional, multimodal, and distributed approaches, like automated deep learning, to capture events and narrative structures involved in a 'story'. This overview of the current state-of-the-art on event extraction, temporal and casual relations, and storyline extraction aims to establish a new multidisciplinary research community with a common terminology and research agenda. Graduate students and researchers in natural language processing, computational linguistics, and media studies will benefit from this book.

Villa, Sara. Improvisatory Practices and the Dawn of the New American Cinema. Edited by Benjamin Piekut and George E. Lewis. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199892921.013.30.

Abstract:
In 1960, cinema critic Jonas Mekas welcomed the advent of the New American Cinema, praising the wave of independent movies produced in late 1950s for their casual and fragmentary nature. The key feature of these productions, which was particularly remarkable in the case of two major features—Shadowsby John Cassavetes andPull My Daisyby Alfred Leslie and Robert Frank—was an anti-Hollywood style that relied on improvisatory practices affecting all structural levels: from the acting to the montage, from the photography to the soundtrack. The style of this “spontaneous cinema” was a pastiche of multiple improvisatory practices, borrowed from bebop, beat poetry, and Stanislavsky’s acting techniques, which defied traditional cinematographic narratives. A close analysis ofShadowsandPull My Daisyreveals the multiple forms of improvisation that shaped these movies’ “spontaneous poetics” and the ways in which they both managed to bring improvisation into film art.

Full text
Abstract:
At the same time that reactionary conservative political figures like Donald Trump were elected and disastrous socioeconomic policies like Brexit were voted into law, representations of bleakly comic white fragility spread across television screens. Analyzing a cycle of transatlantic television programs that emerged mostly between 2014 and 2016 targeting affluent, liberal, white audiences, Horrible White People examines the complicity of the white Left, obsessed with its own anxiety and suffering, in the rise and maintenance of the Far Right—particularly in the mobilization, representation, and sustenance of structural white supremacy on television. The authors use a combined methodology of media-industry analysis and feminist cultural studies, especially close textual analysis, to interrogate a cycle of US and British programming, like Broad City, Casual, You’re the Worst, Catastrophe, Fleabag, and Transparent, that features the abjection of middle-class, liberal, young white people. Throughout, they put these “horrible white people” in conversation with similar upmarket comedies from creators and casts of color, like Insecure, Atlanta, Dear White People, and Master of None, to highlight the ways those shows negotiate prestige TV’s dominant aesthetics of whiteness to push back against the centering of white suffering in a time of cultural crisis. The authors argue that multiple, concurrent, interrelated crises—recession, the emergent mainstreaming of feminism(s), and the unmasked visibility of racial inequality and violence—have caused upheaval among liberals. These crises are represented in this cycle as a collection of circumstances inextricable from and intertwined with the reactionary conservatism, antifeminism, and racism of the rising Right.

Cardoso, Flávia Pieretti, Maria Leda Pinto, and Léia Teixeira Lacerda. Memória discursiva sobre a violência de gênero na voz de mulheres com deficiência. Brazil Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31012/978-65-5861-323-7.

Full text
Abstract:
The work Discursive memory on gender violence in the voice of women with disabilities originated from the Master of Arts in Literature research developed by Flávia Pieretti Cardoso, under the guidance of professors Maria Leda Pinto and Léia Teixeira Lacerda, at the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul. In her role as an interpreter of Brazilian Sign Language at the Casa da Mulher Brasileira and her experience with women from the Association of Women with Disabilities of Mato Grosso do Sul, Flávia was concerned about the invisibility and lack of accessible data and information in the area of gender and disability. The concern resulted in this book, which analyses the speeches of women with disabilities living in Campo Grande / MS, from the theme of gender violence in order to seek possibilities to implement actions to face this type of violence. The theoretical path is based on qualitative research and the corpus analysis grounded on French Discourse Analysis (FDA) studies, as well as on scholars from the Bakhtin Circle, on the analysis of texts of oral communication and the gender and violence area. The analyses presented will enable the reader to conclude that girls and women with disabilities are subject to double exclusion and vulnerability – for having a disability and for being women – by the sexist and capacitist speeches of “power” and “truth”. Therefore, it is a matter of urgency that the Brazilian authorities of power implement effective public programs and policies aimed at the specificities of those subjects.

Church, David. Post-Horror. Edinburgh University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474475884.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Horror’s longstanding reputation as a popular but culturally denigrated genre has been challenged by a new wave of films mixing arthouse minimalism with established genre conventions. Variously dubbed “elevated horror” and “post-horror” in popular film criticism, texts such as The Babadook, It Follows, The Witch, It Comes at Night, Get Out, The Invitation, Hereditary, Midsommar, A Ghost Story, and mother! represent an emerging nexus of taste, politics, and style that has often earned outsized acclaim from high-minded critics and populist rejection by wider audiences. Post-Horror is the first full-length study of one of the most important and divisive movements in twenty-first-century horror cinema. It argues that the affect produced by these films’ minimalist aesthetic has fueled taste-based disagreements between professional film critics, genre fans, and more casual viewers about whether the horror genre can or should be upheld as more than a populist entertainment form, especially as the genre turned away from the post-9/11 debates about graphic violence that consumed the first decade of the twenty-first century. The book thus explores the aesthetic qualities, historical precursors, affective resonances, and thematic concerns of this emerging cycle by situating these texts within revived debates between over the genre’s larger artistic, cultural, and entertainment value. Chapters include thematic analyses of trauma, gaslighting, landscape, existential dread, and political identity across a range of films straddling the line between art-horror and multiplex fare since approximately 2013.

Abstract:
This book introduces the field of disaster medicine and disaster management at its most basic and practical level by presenting a series of scenarios and discussing the optimal responses. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the critical importance of advance planning for disasters, including conducting hazard vulnerability analyses, maintaining staff and hospital readiness, and communicating and cooperating with other community, state, and federal agencies. Chapters address the history of emergency medicine as a specialty, triage systems, crisis leadership and organization, modern training methods, and how to respond to natural disasters, acts of terrorism, mass casualty incidents, vehicular accidents, HAZMAT accidents, radiological emergencies, active shooter situations, pandemics, and more. In each chapter suggestions are made for further reading, and three appendices list accidental and intentional hazardous agents; bioterror agents, and major disasters in history.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the title story of Brodie’s Report (1970), reading it intertextually through Gulliver’s Travels (Swift), Plain Tales from the Hills (Kipling), A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies (Bartolomé de Las Casas), and Tristes tropiques (Claude Lévi-Strauss). The main thrust is a critique of the missionary figure, David Brodie, who is read as serving the interests of nineteenth-century European imperialism as exemplified by the administration of Queen Victoria; she is the addressee of the Scottish Presbyterian’s report. The target of Borges’s criticism is Occidentalism as embodied in the emblematic figure of the missionary—also found in Kipling and elsewhere. The story is symptomatic of mid-twentieth-century geopolitical concerns, felt especially acutely at that time in the West.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the 2000s, which for public companies and the executives who ran them was akin to “the decade from hell.” The stock market performed poorly, the number of public companies declined substantially, and scandals in the early 2000s and the financial crisis of 2008 greatly eroded confidence in big business. A deregulatory trend that began in the late 1970s was reversed, epitomized by the enactment of the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002. A casualty of the bad news for public companies was the imperial-style CEO who featured prominently as the 1990s drew to a close. Those running banks nevertheless enjoyed a corporate governance “free pass” in the mid-2000s that arguably contributed to the onset of the financial crisis.

Dukes, Daniel, Andrea C. Samson, and Eric A. Walle, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Emotional Development. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198855903.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume concerns emotional development and includes contributions from leading experts in the fields of psychology, neuroscience, sociology, primatology, philosophy, history, cognitive science, computer science, and education. This is the first volume of its kind to include such a multidisciplinary group of experts to consider emotional development, and, as such, provides perhaps the most complete examination yet of how emotions develop and manifest themselves neuronally, intra- and interpersonally, across different cultures and species, and over time. The volume is separated into five sections: macro and micro underpinnings, communication and understanding, interactive contexts, socialization and learning, and morality and prosocial behavior. Each section includes contributions from researchers in at least three disciplines, resulting in a volume that is destined to provoke the interested reader into either purposively and accidentally discovering emotional development from novel and stimulating perspectives. The chapters are written to be concise in their overview and accessible to the researcher or intellectually curious person alike. Thus, the reader can enjoy state-of-the-art critical analysis of emotional development from different standpoints, which, whether dipped into casually or read as a whole, will provide the best view of not only what we know today about emotional development, but also where the future study of emotional development lies.

Hamourtziadou, Lily. Body Count. Policy Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781529206722.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The need to secure civilians and their fundamental rights has led to the moral imperative to track, record and memorialise the killing and the suffering of those who find themselves in the midst of violent conflict. Body Count tracks and explores civilian deaths in Iraq following the 2003 invasion by the US-led coalition. It is a recounting of the conflict through the counting of its victims. The book provides a narrative of the War on Terror by charting its course and its impact, through ‘live’ reports and through reflective analysis by the principal researcher of the NGO Iraq Body Count. It highlights the importance and the challenges of casualty recording, it maps the insurgency in Iraq and the ensuing civilian deaths, the struggle between military power and ideology, the increasing radicalisation, the seeking of security through hegemony, and the cycle of violence. The book narrates state collapse through discussions on the neoliberal system’s effect on Iraq’s security, on military interventions and the Western control paradigm, on individual and community trauma. It raises questions on leadership and hegemony, the vulnerability of weak states, winning and losing, regime and energy security. It tells the daily story of Iraq: a story of fear, of executions and mass graves, of airstrikes and car bombs, of heroism and sacrifice, and of life carrying on.

Heinisch, Reinhard, Christina Holtz-Bacha, and Oscar Mazzoleni, eds. Political Populism. Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783748907510.

Full text
Abstract:
Populism represents the greatest political challenge to Western democracies since World War II. The electoral successes of populist parties and actors, Brexit, the presidency of Donald Trump or campaigns against containing the coronavirus pandemic are expressions of this phenomenon, in which the electorate is mobilised against supposed elites. The revised and expanded handbook Political Populism offers a comprehensive theoretical and empirical introduction to the causes and effects of political populism, especially in the democratic systems of Europe, but also in North and South America. It focuses on explaining populism as a consequence of a legitimation crisis of the representative system as well as on the controversies and limitations in the current academic debate. Drawing on political and communication science, the book also offers a comprehensive analysis of the effects of populism on various policy areas, such as environmental, health and economic policy. With contributions by Tjitske Akkerman, Manuel Anselmi, Wolfgang Aschauer, Hans-Georg Betz, Cecilia Biancalana, Paul Blokker, Giuliano Bobba, María Esperanza Casullo, Carlos de la Torre, Paula Diehl, Sarah C. Dingler, Martin Dolezal, Marco Fölsch, Flavia Freidenberg, Sergiu Gherghina, Florian Habersack, Vlastimil Havlík, Kirk A. Hawkins, Reinhard Heinisch, Christina Holtz-Bacha, Robert A. Huber, Gilles Ivaldi, Philip Kitzberger, Benjamin Krämer, Maria Elisabetta Lanzone, Zoe Lefkofridi, Dietmar Loch, Miroslav Mareš, Alfio Mastropaolo, Oscar Mazzoleni, Sergiu Miscoiu, Teun Pauwels, Franca Roncarolo, Saskia Pauline Ruth, Carlo Ruzza, Steven Saxonberg, Christian H. Schimpf, Damir Skenderovic, Sorina Soare, Lone Sorensen, Carlos H. Waisman, Carsten Wegscheider and Sandra Vergari. With a welcome expansion in cases and policy fields, the second edition of Political Populism: Handbook on Concepts, Questions and Strategies for Research brings together scholars from a range of disciplines to reflect on the fundamental challenge populism poses today. This Handbook is essential to every reader who wants to understand where populism comes from, how it manifests and how it influences policies, political actors and the very institutions that make democracy. Theoretically sophisticated, substantiated in its content yet approachable for the interest reader, this Handbook marks an important step in the appreciation of the complexity and consequences of this global phenomenon. Annika Werner, Australian National University Two decades of turbulent political history show that populism is here to stay, and to shape politics for a long time to come. It is considered a serious threat to traditional democratic institutions. That’s why political and communication scientists have massively engaged in studying it, in explaining it, in analyzing its features and implications. Among the several recent scholarly productions, this Handbook is perhaps the best tool put in the hands of all those who want to get a multi-dimensional yet comprehensive understanding of political populism as it is developing in Europe and in the Americas. Definitely a must-have book! Gianpietro Mazzoleni, Università di Milano, Italy This highly readable and detailed Handbook synthetizes a wealth of accumulated and innovative research on contemporary populism in Europe and the Americas. Drawing the insights of a distinguished group of specialists, the volume presents a comprehensive and updated view of the vibrant field of populist studies. Its four sections and thirty-four chapters provide stimulating perspectives on the theory, politics, and communicational dimensions of populism as well on emerging areas of research. A must read for anyone interested in understanding the complexities of a phenomenon that is likely to remain an enduring and unsettling presence in the political life of XXI century democracies.
