McKay, Harriet. "Accommodating the passenger : interior design for the Union-Castle line 1945-1977." Thesis, Kingston University, 2011. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/21830/.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the history of interior design for the Union-Castle passenger liners sailing from Southampton to South Africa between 1945 and 1977, when the last Union-Castle ship left Cape Town. Interrogating the passenger accommodation of five Union-Castle ships, Pretoria Castle (1948). Edinburgh Castle (1948), Pendennis Castle (1960), Windsor Castle (1961), and Reina del Mar (1973), it analyses the design choices and decisions taken by Union-Castle and its managing company, British & Commonwealth Shipping Ltd. (B&C), posits reasons for these, and considers their implications for the creation of Union-Castle's interiors. Drawing upon established design-historical methods, I also argue throughout for an interdisciplinary approach, in particular since this enables a reading of the 'un-designed' and non-canonical space. I contend that it is essential to engage with the wider histories that provided the environment for Union-Castle's operations, and argue that this is a design history that cannot be meaningfully written without also tracing the relationship between Union-Castle, B&C and the Afrikaner National Party government (1948-1994). It is this relationship that provides the underlying discussion of the thesis the extent to which the co-constitutive themes of both the 'representation of politics' and the 'politics of representation' informed the interior design of Union-Castle's ships Such was the nature of the National Party's hegemony that its political ethos can clearly be demonstrated to have had an impact not only upon the process by which, but also the interiors of the vehicles with which, the shipping line conducted business. Of critical significance to this history is the fact that nowhere on board any of the ships that provide my case studies is there ever any reference to black Africa Instead, a series of interiors were produced which were variously inscribed with wholly 'white' ideas about emigration, nationhood and colonial relations between Britain and Africa, and, in the post-colonial period, with ideas about British heritage versus modernity power-broking vis a vis Pretoria and with discourses associated with the rise of air travel and mass tourism.

Abstract:
In the UK, the unprecedented cuts to local budgets, implemented by the national governments from 2010 to the present day, have pushed local authorities to reconsider their scope, their role and their action. The ever decreasing budgets have de facto transformed local councils from service providers to territorial entrepreneurs, as the pressing pursuit of revenues has placed the economic profit at the core of the local policy-making. Urban planning plays a central role in this shift in mindset. The British planning system has been remodelled so to facilitate the implementation of development processes, as these grant revenues from planning obligations, uplifts in land values and higher income from taxes. The reform of the planning system has however conceded free rein to developers, especially through the introduction of the Development Viability Appraisal, a document which they use to reduce the provision of affordable housing, in favour of luxury housing tenures. Therefore, in London the mechanisms that rule the territorial transformations exacerbate the existing housing crisis and force local communities to face displacement. Austerity has thus initiated a cascade-effect whose negative externalities are tangible at the very local level. The emerged topics find their concretization in the description of the Heygate Estate regeneration.

Abstract:
The task of this thesis is the concept of restoration of the castle Zdislavice and its new use as a literary hotel, focusing on the personality of a prominent Austrian writer Marie Ebner-Eschenbach, née Dubská. My goal was to find use, which could be revived and could thus be preserved for future generations. Thanks to the personality of the writer, I decided to create site devoted to literature. I designed hotel for literary enthusiasts, linguists, copywriters and professionals. But also for visitors who are interested in the person of Marie Ebner-Eschenbach. There is also a restaurant, a literary cafe with an associated museum of the writer, chapel, banquet halls with potential uses for conference and library (three libraries). Part of the area is used as a park. It is designed as an English park, but part of the area closest to the castle is designed as a French garden. The tomb of Marie Ebner-Eschenbach is near the castle and is accessible via a staircase. Connection between tomb and castle is shown in the situration plan.

Abstract:
With the changing significance of caste and caste identity, this thesis explores the role of affirmative action or "reservations" in Indian higher education. Specifically, it aims to reopen the debate on the dominance of a "creamy layer" among the OBCs in an increasingly nationalist India. Viewing caste through the lens of ethnic identity, this thesis draws comparisons between the identity of OBCs and Scheduled Castes and Tribes, OBCs of the "Hindi Belt" and OBCs of the South, followed by an analysis of the politicization of caste identity today. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of affirmative action today and possible policy avenues that the State must prioritize.

CHAKKALAKKAL, JOSEPH JUNIOR. "Design of a weight optimized casted ADI component using topology and shape optimization." Thesis, KTH, Maskin- och processteknologi, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-236518.

Full text
Abstract:
Structural Optimization techniques are widely used in product development process in ‘modern industry’ to generate optimal designs with only sufficient material to serve the purpose of the component. In conventional design problems, the design process usually generates overdesigned components with excess material and weight. This will in turn increase the life time cost of machines, both in terms material wastage and expense of usage. The thesis “Design of a weight optimized casted ADI component using topology and shape optimization” deals with redesigning a component from a welded steel plate structure into a castable design for reduced manufacturing cost and weight reduction. The component “Drill Steel Support” mounted in front of the drilling boom of a Face Drilling Machine is redesigned during this work. The main objective of the thesis is to provide an alternative design with lower weight that can be mounted on the existing machine layout without any changes in the mounting interfaces. This thesis report covers in detail procedure followed for attaining the weight reduction of the “Drill Steel Support” and presents the results and methodology which is based on both topology and shape optimization.

Abstract:
As the French Revolution put an end to privileges and the hierarchical division of society, castles seemed meant to disappear or survive only as remains of a bygone era. But the 19th century actually turned out to be a golden age for them – both in France and in many countries in Europe. In France, countless castles were built or overhauled, as the nobility returned to their lands and the bourgeoisie grew in power and wealth. In the three French départements of Allier, Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme, no less then 464 projects or actual construction works were launched. They originated either from ancient noble families wishing to erase the damages of time and History on their properties or from wealthy bourgeois willing to own high-profile mansions that would be of testimony of their social uplift. The 19th century was also a period where the Middle Ages was re-discovered and ancient castles became attractive again. Architectural trends were influenced by historicism, sometimes exotic styles, while interior design had to suit the lifestyle and need for comfort of the landlords. Some architects specialised in such projects, both historicist and modern

The graphical renovation of Jornal do Brasil (a wide-circulation brazilian newspaper) and the elaboration of its sunday supplement Suplemento Dominical do Jornal do Brasil fit in the context of the breakthrough through which brazilian design was undergoing during the 1950s and 60s. The renovation of the aforementioned publications a process laden with idiosyncrasies should be considered as an integral part of this rupture with pre-modern brazilian design but, at the same time, the publications were actively distancing themselves from what was becoming the standard design-scheme that was laying claims on graphical projects in Brazil at that period. The present dissertation seeks to shed some light on the interplay of these features relying on a page-to-page visual analysis of these publications. Furthermore, the dissertation does not shy from retracing the history of Jornal do Brasils graphical renovation and of the emergence of its supplement, questioning the deep-rooted mythology surrounding these origins with the support of the growing bibliography on the issue and interviews with people involved.

Cassel, Robert Douglas. "Design, fabrication, and testing of the van der Pauw piezoresistive structure for pressure sensing." Thesis, Montana State University, 2008. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2008/cassel/CasselR0508.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The project characterizes a piezoresistive sensor under variations of both size and orientation with respect to the silicon crystal lattice for its application to MEMS pressure sensing. The sensor to be studied is a four-terminal piezoresistive sensor commonly referred to as a van der Pauw (VDP) structure. The VDP sensor is used primarily in sheet resistance measurements, but has also been determined to be useful in determining the stress components at a point on (100) and (111) silicon wafer surfaces. In a previous study, our team has determined the relation between the biaxial stress state at a point and the piezoresistive response of the VDP by combining the VDP resistance equations with the equations governing silicon piezoresistivity. It was found that the theoretical sensitivity of the VDP sensor is over three times higher than the conventional filament type resistor. With MEMS devices being used in applications which continually necessitate smaller size, understanding the effect of size on VDP performance is important. In order to test the validity of the theoretical calculations which were done by our group, appropriate devices were manufactured on a (100) silicon test wafer. The wafer was designed to have numerous pressure sensitive diaphragms which can reliably sustain a pressure difference of approximately 50kPa. Each diaphragm was doped with a VDP or other sensor designed to test the sensitivity of the VDP vs. a certain parameter. These parameters include size, misalignment, and diaphragm position, in addition to the comparison of sensitivity to conventional sensor types. A test strip was also included in the design in order to determine an empirical relationship between stress and resistance. In testing the VDP devices for comparison with conventional sensor types, it was found that the VDP devices had a linear response as expected, were the most sensitive, and provided a number of additional advantages. Specifically, the VDP device allows for significant miniaturization, because its resistance value is independent of size, and the measurement technique is independent of line resistance. The simple geometry of the VDP also simplifies fabrication.

Abstract:
In contemporary societies time distinctions are being reconfigured. Although in modernlife technology enables new forms of social activities and entertainments and the possibility to experience them day and night, night has been known and experienced differently in various cultures and in different time periods. Discussions of the city at night are dominated by the framework and experience of Western Europe, the USA and Australia. However, night-life in other places could be different and in order to achieve an in-depth understanding of the concepts of a night-time economy and a 24-hour society it is important to study night-life in various parts of the world. In this thesis Mashhad is investigated as a 24-hour city in Iran. Night-life in Iran, as a Middle-Eastern country, is different from the available literature as a result of various social and cultural factors. In Iran, because of religious discipline, there are no pubs, bars, casinos or clubs. However, cities work at night with a continuity of their day-time activities. Mashhad, as one of the holiest cities in Shiite Islam with the shrine of Imam Reza located at its centre, is visited annually by over 25 million pilgrims. The large number of visitors and the shrine are characteristics of the city and its 24-hour activity. Boundaries between day and night in Mashhad are less clear cut and night-life includes all kinds of activities including religious, business, recreational, social or commercial. However, the Regeneration and Reconstruction Plan of Imam Reza’s Shrine Area, started in 2001, is threatening the 24-hour features of the shrine area by attempting to modernise it in order to attract and accommodate more pilgrims. This study aims to investigate how to improve nightlife by considering the impact of urban design. It studies the night-life of the shrine area in Mashhad through a multi-method approach and investigates the impact of recent urban design interventions. In addition, a series of guidelines are proposed for revitalisation of the shrine area whilst keeping and supporting its local active night-life. This study fills a part of the gap in the literature of a 24-hour society and night-time economy through investigating a less-studied type of 24-hour society in a context that has not been considered previously and is helpful in redefining the ideas which have been formed because of this gap. By investigating the interconnections between the temporal structure of cities, their spatial form and mass pilgrimage this study argues that social, cultural, economic, political and climatic factors are all important in the formation of night-life in a city and highlights the possible threats to the night-life of cities that might result from urban design approaches that ignore a local context. It also shows that the social and temporal habits of the people who shape a city’s night-life are a product of the discussed factors which may change through time. By emphasising the importance of the local night-time economy in the formation of 24-hour societies, the findings of this study highlight the necessity of considering the night-life of urban areas in regeneration plans. These findings have direct policy relevance in the regeneration plan of the shrine area in Mashhad and are helpful for regeneration plans of similar cases with local active night-life.

Turkmen, A. "The institutional design of intra-party democracy through legal instruments : Turkish case." Thesis, University of Westminster, 2016. https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/item/9x1q8/the-institutional-design-of-intra-party-democracy-through-legal-instruments-turkish-case.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance of political parties for contemporary representative democracies is beyond dispute. Despite their significance for state-level democracy, political parties continue to be regarded as oligarchical and to be criticised because of their internal practices. For this reason, intra-party democracy (IPD) warrants in-depth analysis. This thesis investigates IPD in Turkey, primarily from the perspective of participatory democracy, with the purpose of suggesting reforms to the Turkish Political Parties Law (TPPL). Turkish political parties and Turkish party regulation provide an interesting case because there is a significant difference between mature democracies and Turkey regarding IPD regulation. IPD in established democracies has always been regarded as a private concern of parties and has been left unregulated. IPD in Turkey, by contrast, is provided for both by the constitution and the TPPL. Although IPD is a constitutional and legal requirement in Turkey, however, political parties in fact display a high level of non-democratic administration. The main reason is that the TPPL only pays lip service to the idea of IPD and requires no specific measures apart from establishing a party congress with a representative form of democracy. By establishing and holding party congresses, political parties are perceived as conforming to the requirements of IPD under the law. In addition, the contested nature of democracy as a concept has impeded the creation of efficacious legal principles. Thus, the existing party law fails to tackle the lack of IPD within political parties and, for this reason, is in need of reform. Furthermore, almost every Turkish party’s own constitution highlights the importance of IPD and promises IPD. However, these declared commitments to IPD in their constitutions alone, especially in countries where the democratic culture is weak, are unlikely to make much difference in practice. Accordingly, external regulation is necessary to ensure the protection of the rights and interests of the party members with regards to their participation in intra-party decision-making processes. Nevertheless, in spite of a general consensus in favour of reforming the TPPL, a lack of consensus exists as to what kind of reforms should be adopted. This thesis proposes that reforming the TPPL in line with an approach based on participatory democracy could provide better IPD within Turkish political parties, citing as evidence comparative case studies of the participatory practices for policy-making, leadership selection and candidate selection in mature democracies. This thesis also analyses membership registration and the effect of state funding on IPD, which are highly problematic in Turkey and represent impediments to the flourishing of IPD.

Abstract:
The thesis aims to deconstruct the traditional dualities between design and use and blend the boundaries between them. It characterises design as a process that is complex, dynamic, and integral to other processes, such as use. The thesis utilises Latour's concept of the collective. Although this concept has been applied to architectural contexts in previous studies, this thesis expands the collective to include actors of use. The thesis elaborates on the inscription and description of technologies inspired by Akrich (1992). It shows how the collective is shaped and reshaped through such processes. Building parallels with previous studies, it analyses the importance of fluidity and fluid actors in de-scribing technologies and reshaping the collectives. The thesis utilises the case of Masdar City, which has been designed in the UK by the architectural and urban planning firm Foster + Partners and implemented in the Middle East, specifically in the United Arab Emirates. The thesis focuses on its first developed stage represented by Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST). Based on a qualitative and inductive approach, the conducted research utilises interviews and site observations with the designers, users, and other main contributors. Through this approach, the thesis reflects on the concept of sustainability that is itself contested, changeable, and vague. The thesis concludes that sustainable design processes should be seen as continuous loops between design and use. In acknowledging this, it is further suggested that concepts such as the living laboratory, which support the adaptation of designs and learning from use, are adopted at the outset in architectural production.

Santo, Anna Ruth. "A Human-Centered Approach to Designing an Invasive Species Eradication Program." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52562.

Full text
Abstract:
The increasing scope and speed of biological invasions around the world is a major concern of the modern environmental conservation movement. Although many ecological impacts of biological invasions are still not well understood, there is a general consensus that exotic, invasive species are a primary driver of extinctions globally. By altering ecosystem structure and function, invasive species also affect human quality of life; however, not all impacts lead to negative outcomes. Given that invasive species have diverse impacts on society, their management in human-dominated landscapes is a wicked problem wherein the resolution is as much an issue of social value as technical capacity. The purpose of my research was to understand the propensity for engaging private landowners in an effort to eradicate an invasive species on an inhabited island. Specifically, I investigated private landowner perspectives on eradicating the North American beaver (Castor canadensis) from the Tierra del Fuego (TDF) island archipelago in Argentina and Chile. The beaver was introduced in 1946 and has since become a central conservation issue due to its long-lasting changes to local hydrology, nutrient cycling, riparian vegetation, food webs, and aquatic and terrestrial species assemblages. Because eradication requires near complete cooperation from stakeholders and no research had been conducted to understand the perspectives or willingness of private landowners to cooperate, my objectives were to: 1) characterize the links private landowners make between the presence of beavers and impacts to the ecosystem services in their riparian areas, and 2) explore the role of a market-based incentive program to increase landowner cooperation in eradication efforts. Through semi-structured interviews, I elicited landowner mental models of how beavers impact the ecosystem services they receive from their riparian lands. I found that TDF ranchers prioritized provisioning ecosystem services, and held diverse and idiosyncratic beliefs about how beavers influence these outcomes. TDF ranchers may not recognize the beaver as a highly salient problem because they do not connect them to reductions in ecosystem services that are important to them. Among those who do perceive beavers affecting important ecosystem services, there is no clear, unified understanding of how the beavers disturb the ecosystem and key ecosystem services. Additionally, in a broadly administered survey, I used a factorial vignettes to examine the role of program structure and other program-related factors on landowners' willingness to participate in a voluntary eradication program. Overall, landowners were willing to cooperate in an incentive program to eradicate beavers. They were positively motivated by greater financial compensation, an increased expectation that the program would be successful, and the program assuming full responsibility for its implementation. Other factors returned mixed results indicating that further research may be required. In diverse, human-inhabited, and privately-owned landscapes, conservation requires collective action—i.e., the high threshold of participation needed for eradication to be achieved. Understanding the knowledge systems that cause landowners to perceive value or risk serves as a first step in understanding behaviors, and can also serve as a framework for crafting more effective outreach, as current communication about the beaver and the proposed eradication may not resonate with private landowners. Further, barriers to inaction can be overcome by understanding landowner needs and how program-related factors influence the potential for cooperation. In sum, by putting human needs at the forefront of program design, conservation planners can better understand stakeholder perspectives, reduce barriers to participation, and ultimately increase cooperation and improve conservation outcomes.

Abstract:
The present study intends, primarily, to show that Camilo Castelo Brancos fictional production consists in a Romanesque legacy that passes much beyond the mere transmission of love stories. Thus, some important aspects and themes of the writer of São Miguel de Seides literature are taken as pillars of this analysis, such as the presence of a Portugal immersed in capitalist relations, typical of the 19th century, a proper ambience to the financial interest and the desire of mimetic basis, but barren to unselfish affections, and the camilian narrators remarkable performance, an instance that not abstains from unveiling, every time, the vile engines that, according to his opinion, stimulate as much the gear of this materialist Portuguese society as the characters attitudes inserted in it. Finally, it is pertinent to emphasize that the selected corpus for this camilian works appreciation is composed by the novels Onde está a Felicidade? and Um Homem de Brios, both from 1856.

Abstract:
The field of UAV systems is an active research area with potential for development and enhancement in various perspectives. This thesis investigates different issues related to the design, operation and control of UAV systems with a focus on the application side of each proposed solution where the implementation side and applicability of the proposed solutions are always considered with high priority. The thesis discusses unmodeled actuator dynamics and their effect on UAV systems when using feedback linearisation to linearize nonlinear models of UAVs. The analysis shows potential risk when implementing feedback linearisation and neglecting actuator dynamics even for first order actuator system. A solution algorithm of two stage feedback linearisation is proposed to handle actuator dynamics and linearize the main dynamics of the system. In the field of design and operation of UAVs, this thesis proposes a systematic design procedure for electric propulsion systems that are widely used in UAVs. The design procedure guides the designer step by step to achieve minimum propulsion system weight or maximum flight time or a trade off between the two factors from the supplied solution sets. On the navigation side, the thesis proposes a new indoor navigation system that is easy to implement and less costly compared with other indoor navigation systems. The proposed system can be classified under computer-vision based navigation systems, however, it needs less information and less computational capacity. The thesis also contributes to the structure design of UAV systems by producing a novel tri-rotor UAV platform. The proposed UAV is novel in structure and design and has a centralized control system that stabilizes and tracks both rotational and transitional motion of the vehicle simultaneously.

This work seeks to understand the difficulties and dilemmas that pervade the career choice of teenagers. For this, we take investigative via psyquic unconscious determinations that, as observed in present clinical practice, it is also confirmed important in the reviewed literature. In the last one, the most important findings signaled an important relationship between identification processes and the various choices we make throughout life. These findings led us to question about how psychoanalysis understands these processes and how they are involved in building the career choice of teenagers. From the referential Freudian and Lacanian, we have studied the concepts of adolescence and identification, which articulated the process of career choice and fragments of clinical cases, allowed us to reach conclusions that point to the deep involvement of the dimension of desire and the unconscious in issues regarding career choices and the possibility of building a listening, of the difficulties found there, more attentive to the psychic determinations and singular responses that each presents in front of these determinations

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to critically inquire into the appropriateness of the current human computer interaction (HCI) practices in Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD) system design given the contextual constraints and challenges found in developing country contexts. Despite user participation in system design being a buzzword of HCI the form of this participation varies with the different disciplinary perspectives and paradigms and their different methods for engaging users and identifying users' needs. Moreover, a majority of these dominant HCI perspectives are not only rooted in the developed countries context they also mainly focus on organisational management information systems (MIS) and less on information systems (IS) that place emphasis on the socio-economic context of developing countries. Literature review reveal that limited studies focus on the differences brought about by the western influenced methodologies and principles when applied in different contexts and how they affect the user participation process as well as the outcome. Building on past research, this research argues that HCI for ICTD needs to develop new contextualised participatory methods and strategies that consider the broader and complex contexts of the ICTD users. However, shifting the focus to localised forms of HCI in ICTD system design requires a better appreciation of the challenges and constraints encountered when applying the traditional HCI methods and strategies. Based on this argument the research conceptually explores and reflects on the underlying contextual factors and mechanisms present in participatory ICTD system design and the presumed relationships among them. Drawing on this conceptual framework, the research conducts semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and participant observations with three mobile money system design projects in Kenya that engaged the users during the design process to highlight how current HCI practices respond to the multifaceted nature of ICTD system design which present challenges that include social, technical, cultural and infrastructural issues. Findings from this qualitative study provide significant new insights that support the call for contextualised participatory methods and strategies. The findings suggest that there is tension between the underlying assumptions inherent in western HCI methods and strategies and the local context thus justifying the call for the appropriation of the design process. Drawing on the conceptual framework it was found that bias formed from factors such as power relations, diversity in interests for participation and cross-cultural differences moderate the design process and ultimately the participatory outcome. From the knowledge perspective, this research provides an in-depth understanding of the developing country contextual factors that mediate user participation process in ICTD system design. Furthermore, the research extends the knowledge with regards to participatory interventions in the development of IS in Africa. The research also presents a theoretical framework that makes explicit the contextual assumptions and constraints embedded in participatory ICTD system design interventions and how they shape the design process and the participatory outcome. Finally, the recommendations formulated from this research provide HCI designers and practitioners actionable knowledge in regards to reflecting on their current traditional HCI tools and techniques to ensure better localised design processes.

The biodiesel is a biofuel obtained from renewable sources, as vegetable oils and animal fats. The castor seeds (Ricinus communis L.) have a medium content of oil of 47%. This oil when transformed in biodiesel produces a fuel with a series of environmental advantages in relation to petroleum diesel. Therefore in this work it was made the optimization of the production process of the methyl and ethyl biodiesel from castor oil, varying the reaction time, the catalyst amount and the oil:alcohol ratio (methanol or ethanol) using a Central Rotatable Composite Design (CRCD) symmetrical and of second order, constituted of two parts: the factorial 2n, with central points, and the axial part. With base in this factorial planning, surfaces and curves of responses and variance analysis, it was evaluated the effects and the significance of the models for the responses variables, biodiesel yield in mass and the esters content. For the production of methyl biodiesel, the greater biodiesel yield in mass is reached when oil/methanol molar ratio 1:4-1:5; 0,4-1,2% of KOH and time reaction 20-100 min, is used. In function of the esters content, the oil/methanol molar ratio should be between 1:10 and 1:11,36, KOH concentration between 1,4 and 2,34 and reaction time between 120 and 140 min. The regression models of the methyl biodiesel for ANOVA appropriately explained at the level of 95%, the data variation (R2 = 0,90567, for yield biodiesel and R2 = 0,7654, for the esters content). For the production of the ethyl biodiesel, the results of the factorial planning 23 showed that the oil/ethanol ratio and the KOH concentration went statisticaly significant to the biodiesel yield in mass and content of esters. The maximum yield can be reached when oil/ethanol molar ratio between 1:10,4 and 1:12,35; 1,4 to 2% of KOH and 60- 100 min of reaction, is used. In function of the esters content, the oil/ethanol molar ratio should be between 1:10,5 and 1:12,35, concentration of KOH between 1,4 and 2,0 % and time of reaction between 60 and 120 min. The regression models explained the variation of the data appropriately (R2 = 0,71811, for biodiesel yield and for esters content, R2 = 0,95217) and they acted significantly, to 95% of trust limit, the relationship between the independent variables and the response. The samples of the methyl and ethyl biodiesel of castor oil, in the optimized conditions, they are inside of the limits preset by National Agency of the Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels.

Koo, May Yeok. "Under one roof : intergenerational care for people with dementia in Singapore-Chinese families : a case study design." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2018. https://www.research.manchester.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/under-one-roof-intergenerational-care-for-people-with-dementia-in-singaporechinese-families--a-case-study-design(b7127495-cdb9-4efd-a0df-207147b5477f).html.

Abstract:
Background: The family-centred cultural construct of filial responsibility forms the core foundation of the traditional mosaic of a typical intergenerational Singapore-Chinese family. Due to modernization, several generations co-habiting within the same household or living in separate households have shrunk to smaller-sized immediate and extended families residing in mostly high-rise apartments. This change has impacted on the social norm of traditional intergenerational Singapore-Chinese caregiving. Currently, there are gaps in understanding the intergenerational Singapore-Chinese families and caregiving in dementia. Only a few studies to date have discussed the intersection on intergenerational family care, but an in-depth exploration of intergenerational Singapore-Chinese families' cultural beliefs and values is an important consideration when attempting to understand the family and determine their support and maintenance of relational bonds. Aims: The aim of this longitudinal, case study research using a participatory approach was to better understand the everyday caregiving experience of intergenerational Singapore-Chinese families within the context of each family unit living together in Singapore 'under one roof'. Family biographies were co-constructed with five intergenerational families living 'under one roof' during repeated and scheduled visits with each participating family over a period of between six to 15 months. The interviews included the completion of a 23-item structured questionnaire, co-construction of a genogram and ecomap with each family, drawings, audio recordings and digital photographs of the home environment, items and activities. Results: Narrative analysis of the five intergenerational cases resulted in the emergence of three themes that explained and explored the various dynamics in the data, namely: i) Family values, and its supporting sub-themes of culture; religion; and filial piety; ii) Family support, and its supporting sub-themes of timeliness; internal support network; and external support network; and iii) Family bonds, and its supporting sub-themes of relational; closeness and conflict; and challenges. Data analysis also generated a meta-theme 'Intergenerational Family Connections' which was supported by three properties: i) Strongly held beliefs and practices; ii) Shared space; and iii) Supporting family togetherness. Conclusion: This study has led to an in-depth understanding of the everyday experience of the intergenerational Singapore-Chinese families of a person with dementia, within the shared context of their family construction. This study makes an original and significant contribution to knowledge through the development of a new theoretical model on intergenerational family connections in dementia care. The findings will better inform formal and informal service providers and policy makers on how best to support and maintain the relational dynamics of intergenerational Singapore-Chinese families who provide care for the person with dementia at home.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the several functions exercised by the epistolary discourse, specially the love letters, in the camilian novels in the period of 1860 to 1870, from what collection we point out Amor de Perdição (1861), Memórias de Guilherme do Amaral (1863), Agulha em Palheiro (1863) e A Sereia (1865). In these works, the letters have a very strong presence, linked to the shape and, in consequence, the elaboration of concepts and meanings of social and intimate dimension. Very popular in that time, the letters are present at another eighties romances: at Eurico, o Presbítero (de Herculano), Viagens na Minha Terra (de Garrett) and O Primo Basílio (de Eça de Queirós).The letters changed by the couples in love reveals much more than one annoyed love story which would follow the patterns of the romantic school. They portray before all the personal desires, conflicts and social tensions lived in Portugal of 19th century. The epistolary discourse is a manner of giving an intimate dimension for the main dramas of the society. To the perceptive, anxious and, unhopeful look of Camilo Castelo Branco, that criticizes the values of the society in which he is inserted, many times without seeing a possible solution, the letters become a way to bring new voices to the romance. Therefore, Camilo speaks for the narrators, for his characters in dialogue, but also for what in that world is not said, but it is written (in the letters)

Abstract:
The aim of this empirical study was to find out the impact of work environment, individual characteristics, training design and motivation on training transfer to the work in the context of public security. Methodology included a cross sectional questionnaire survey administered to a stratified convenience sample of 500 officers of Public Security Organisation in Saudi Arabia. The effective response rate was 70.2% (351 useable surveys returned out of 500 surveys administered). Data were analysed by running frequencies, descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. Results showed that participants’ learning motivation was statistically significantly determined by peer support (β = .311, p = .000), training retention (β = .197, p = .027), goal orientation (β = .163, p = .036) and self-efficacy (β = .158, p = .047). Statistically significant predictors of transfer motivation were learning motivation (β = .401, p = .000), peer support (β = .224, p = .003), training retention (β = .176, p = .021) and self-efficacy (β = .152, p = .028), feedback (β = -.159, p = .014) and openness to change (β = -.147, p = .020). Statistically significant determinants of training transfer were training design (β = .318, p = .000), training retention (β = .313, p = .000), transfer motivation (β = .177, p = .008) and supervisor support (β = .146, p = .018). Training transfer to the work in the context of public security is positively affected by work environment, individual characteristics, training design and motivation factors but a negative association between transfer motivation and performance feedback and openness to change suggest a review of these factors in the context of public security organisations.

Shobeiri, S. "The relationship between human beings and nature in an urban context : Tehran and the natural structures of seven river-valleys : a design and planning case study." Thesis, University of Westminster, 2016. https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/item/9yxv9/the-relationship-between-human-beings-and-nature-in-an-urban-context-tehran-and-the-natural-structures-of-seven-river-valleys-a-design-and-planning-case-study.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates the relationship between human beings and nature in an urban context through the enhancement and improvement of the existing natural structures of the city. Although, in the past, the city was mostly characterised as a place of ‘non-nature’, nowadays the landscape is acknowledged to be the context from which the city has developed. In this research study, Tehran, its natural structures of seven river-valleys and Tehranian residents have been selected as the case study in order to investigate the human-nature relationship in an urban context. This design-based research studies a process of realising sustainable large-scale strategies and objectives in the design and planning of the river-valleys in Tehran. The applied methodology in this process includes a combination of the review of related literature, direct appraisal, interviews and design practice. The design and planning part of this research focuses on one river-valley in Tehran, Darband, which is thirty-three kilometres in length and traverses both urban and peri-urban areas. The design and planning strategies and objectives bring about a new way of looking at river-valleys as natural urban structures that contribute to the identity of the city and citizens. The research has an interdisciplinary approach integrating the environmental and cultural aspects of sustainability. However, the main focus of this thesis is on cultural aspect. To this end, sustainable largescale design strategies and objectives were devised to be responsive to the present and future needs of Tehranian residents and to the natural structures of Tehran’s river-valleys. It was found to be critical to define the strategies in a way that is compatible with the characteristics and potentials of both the rivervalleys and Tehranian citizens. Furthermore, the influences that establish the relationship between human beings and nature in an Iranian-Tehranian context and background are found to be highly significant. The strategies and objectives are therefore based on the effective aspects of these influences in order to achieve a cultural aspect of sustainability. The cultural aspect in this research refers to three features: the quotidian of Tehranian residents; rituals, cultural customs and traditions associated with specific days; and a ‘disappearing’ history in the Persian culture and context. In a summarised statement, this research investigates how the cultural, historical and environmental aspects of river-valleys in the context of Tehran can be integrated in design and planning strategies that address the needs and potentials of both river-valleys and Tehranian users. This research primarily studies the cultural aspect, and the environmental aspect is studied as an affiliated and interdependent aspect. Furthermore, the process of study revealed that the cultural and historical aspects, and social attitudes have significant levels of overlapping and hence, in this research, the cultural aspect and social attitudes are defined as an integrated whole.

Abstract:
Human-caused habitat loss and fragmentation disrupt contiguous natural areas, leading to low population sizes and isolation of populations. To avoid increased risk of extinction, conservation networks are created: clusters of connected protected areas, largely based on expert-opinion. In landscape ecology, models are used to increase ecological realism in network design in order to avoid misguided management actions. However, increasing the ecological complexity requires detailed ecological data. In this dissertation, I investigate the challenges and opportunities encountered applying such models for conservation network design. With remote-sensing and species detection data, I modelled potential connectivity for white-lipped peccaries Tayassu pecari in Belize. This species is an endangered forest ungulate that requires large forest areas and has a short dispersal range. The model identifed alternative corridor routes and areas that were particularly important for connectivity conservation. Satellite tracking of an individual in southern Belize showed that animal activity, and presumably forest cover and terrain ruggedness hampered data collection. Nevertheless, results showed an average home-range size and slow movement rates compared to other estimates, and confrmed the species' preference for forested habitats. A global evaluation of satellite telemetry in wildlife research, including over 3,000 telemetry units, provided insight into the relative in uence of the environment, topography, species, and unit characteristics on unit performance. Fix acquisition and data transfer rates were high, but close to half of the deployments failed prematurely, and half of these due to technical malfunction. Species and unit characteristics predicted unit performance better than environmental factors. Conservation network design based on moderately data-demanding models seems to be an achievable objective. However, modelling with high levels of ecological detail is still challenged by technological shortcomings. Ultimately, efective conservation network design depends on the continued collaboration between the modelling, empirical, and applied domains of connectivity conservation.

With a history spanning four generations and almost a century, Hung Gee Bees Farm (HGBF) has passed through all the developmental stages of Taiwan’s apiculture (beekeeping) industry. Building on long-time research and development, HGBF integrates traditional beekeeping wisdom with high-tech testing and a product traceability system, and has thus become a benchmark in the profession. Its output of pure honey is the largest in Taiwan, and its enzyme density exceeds. HGBF thus plays an irreplaceable role in Taiwan’s apiculture industry. However, after decades of operation, both the HGBF bee yard and its image show signs of aging. Even though its products are found on the shelves of more and more retailers, its product image is poorly suited for market competition. To enhance its competitiveness in the industry, the HGBF management team plans a brand-new second-generation bee farm to serve as the foundation for an upgrade of its facilities and brand image at the same time. By combining brand positioning, a visual identity system, spatial visual design, and HGBF-branded gift packaging with the existing advantages of the original leisure farm, HGBF aims to build a brand-new farm with a quality-based new brand that suits the concepts of the experience economy and meets the expectations of new-generation consumers. Thus, Grandpa Lai Bee’s Castle was born. Taking reference from the six-stage developmental history of industry in Japan, this study investigated the current status of leisure agriculture in Taiwan, and found that the age of the experience economy has indeed arrived. Finally, this study completed a branding project that involved quality-based assessment indicators for visual design to facilitate integrated planning and design. The outcomes of this process have created an experience space that represents and crystallizes the wisdom of Taiwanese beekeeping culture. The project has enabled this century-old agricultural specialty to catch up with the new-generation market through a brand-new visual image. The honey bee farm intended to leverage the interaction between the experience area and consumers to increase consumers’ understanding of the farm and the profession and develop their brand loyalty and repeated consumption. The efforts proved successful in boosting product sales. The creative design has added new value to this local specialty industry.

Simple logic circuitry controlled the DC motors that rotated the turrets in two directions. No software or firmware was involved in the development of the Castle Attack toy. Children were invited to take part when the initial research was being done and when experiments were being made in mechanical design and assembly and the logic circuits were being tested. After the design of Castle Attack had been completed, two sets were made and satisfaction questionnaires were prepared. The Castle Attack toy allows the operator to experience the fun of loading and shooting bullets. After the subjects had played the game and filled in the questionnaires the results were assessed. The results showed: (1) The aluminum material used to make the toys provided a stable mechanical structure. (2) Cams could easily be used as triggers and the bullets used were functional. (3) PU pipe used as shaft coupling, can simplify design and reduce cost. (4) The experimental spring K value was close to that calculated. (5) The range of the bullets used in the tests was a good indication of game field size. (6) Simple logic circuitry could be used and this made hardware design easy and kept the cost down. (7) The survey results showed positive comments and feedback. (8) The children involved in the development helped by creating specific game rules. Including children as participants at the early stages of game design produced good feedback and helped to provide the design of a solid shooting game platform. Berthelette, Michele. "Assessing manual wheelchair caster design for mobility in winter conditions." 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/31692.

Full text
Abstract:
Manual wheelchair users who live in cold climates are faced with daily difficulties related to personal independence and societal inclusion, as their assistive devices are unable to overcome the physical barriers created by snow. Packed snow on sidewalks creates a barrier for wheelchair users as the small caster wheels become embedded in the snow-pack, this leads to upper body fatigue as well as wheelchair tipping, and falling. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a method by which the best design could be determined of a group of four commercially available manual wheelchair casters. This method was developed based on the HAAT model of assistive technology design. It was confirmed that snow-packed surfaces, as well as increased inclines, had a significant detrimental effect on the recorded human factors determinants, as well as conventional engineering determinants.

Abstract:

Explosives and rocket fuel are just two prime examples of energetic materials, compounds that contain a combustible fuel and oxidizer within the same substance. Recent advances have enabled the construction of energetic materials through multiple variations of additive manufacturing, principally inkjet, direct-write, fused filament fabrication, electrospray deposition, and stereolithography. Many of the methods used for creating multiple layered objects (three-dimensional) from energetic materials involve the use of highly viscid materials.

The focus of this work was to design a process capable of additively manufacturing three-dimensional objects from melt-castable energetic materials, which are known for their low viscosity. An in-depth printer design and fabrication procedure details the process requirements discovered through previous works, and the adaptations available and used to construct an additive manufacturing device capable of printing both energetic and non-energetic (also referred to as inert) melt-castable materials. Initial characterization of three proposed inert materials confirmed their relative similarity in rheological properties to melt-castable energetic materials and were used to test the printer’s performance.

Preliminary tests show the constructed device is capable of additively manufacturing melt-castable materials reproducibly in individual layers, with some initial successful prints in three-dimensions, up to three layers. An initial characterization of the printer’s deposition characteristics additionally matches literature predictions. With the ability to print three-dimensional objects from melt-castable materials confirmed, future work will focus on the reproducibility of multi-layered objects and the refined formulation of melt-castable energetic materials.

This project aims to investigate and analyze the intervention levels of interior design in public or private buildings with historic character for a better intervention, because increasingly thinking about restoration, preserving our history and culture. It made a historical context, in this case the historic district of Castelo Branco, how come its development, not only at the structural level, but also at the level of needs of its inhabitants. The choice of the space fell on cinquecentist housing, and commercial space located on the street Mouzinho Magro. This, not only to study the housing component, but also a commercial historic district. After a search performed on these parameters is carried out the photographic survey and all measurements necessary for the realization of technical drawings. Later, the realization of the project of both spaces, comes as the resolution of all problems of accessibility and construction found along the way, because it is increasingly necessary to inclusive design and think in all citizens, especially those with physical disability, or people in wheelchairs, unable to walk or people who cannot travel long distances, people with sensory difficulties, such as blind or deaf, and even those who by virtue of his journey of life, if present transiently conditioned, including pregnant women, children and the elderly. So, with this habitation it is intended to give an answer to all of this parameters in order to benefit the quality of life of all citizens

The present document is an author’s compilation work, and it’s the conclusion of studies on degree of Master of Interior Design by ESART, IPCB. Here, the document presents a rehabilitation project of a house in Castelo Branco’s old town, as an internship at Gabinete de Reabilitação da Zona Histórica e da Devesa de Castelo Branco | Câmara Municipal de Castelo Branco. This internship’s main topics were the Patrimony’s Protection and the Rehabilitation of Old Town’s Degraded Areas, in this particular case, the city of Castelo Branco. Interns have developed various jobs to support projects developed by the Office(GRZHDCB | CB). This was to promote a bigger sensitivity to those topics and also to develop a better capacity of field work on those projects. The project that names this text consists in a restauration of a fifteenth century home, which is Municipality property, and is located in the Historic Area (Zona Histórica) which use here is proposing to amend – students’ housing. This choice is due to the urgent need of optimising and renewing this area, but also as a way to conscientize the young population for the importance to repopulate old places, so they can continue to tell the stories of their cities. Part of this document is then composed of a description of all the work done during the internship as well as the various stages of project development, both during and after the training period, along with the justification of all the choices made

This study investigated the optimal design of a submerged entry nozzle (SEN) in a continuous slab caster. Simulations of the fluid flow were conducted, and the effects of various factors were analyzed. Numerical calculations were based on the real geometries of the slab casters of the China Steel Corporation. This study applied the commercial computational fluid mechanics code FIDAP to calculate the fluid flow in three and two dimensions. Finite element numerical method and the k-e model were used to analyze the highly turbulent flow conditions. Two-phase flow and bubble dispersion models were employed in this study. The following factors on the fluid flow of the angled casters were studied: the geometries of the nozzle and mold, the throttling direction of the sliding gate, the amount of throttling, and argon gas injection rate. The flow of inclusions and gas bubbles under various design and operation conditions were investigated. This study determined the F factors and discussed the effects of various design conditions in a quantitative way. Satisfactory results were obtained in three dimensional fluid flow simulations. Two dimensional calculations with argon gas by employing the bubble dispersion model were also satisfactory. Based on the bubble dispersion model, we have simulated the fluid flow with argon injection for 81 various nozzle and mold design conditions. The results were analyzed by Taguchi Method. Optimal design conditions for various targets were presented.

This study investigated the optimal design of a submerged entry nozzle (SEN) in a continuous slab caster to minimize the defect due to inclusion entrapment. Based on the real geometries of the slab casters of the China Steel Corporation, fluid flow analyses from the SEN to mold were simulated using numerical methods. This study applied the commercial computational fluid mechanics code FIDAP to calculate the fluid flow in three and two dimensions. Finite element numerical method and the k-εmodel were used to analyze the highly turbulent flow conditions. The following factors on the fluid flow of the angled casters were studied: the geometries of the nozzle and mold, the throttling direction of the sliding gate, the amount of throttling, argon gas flow rate, and argon particle diameter. The flow of inclusions and gas bubbles under various design and operation conditions were investigated. These results were used to evaluate the influence of the design on the qualities of the products. The results showed that the fluid flow, impingement point, and the motion of the inclusions were deeply influenced by the argon gas flow rate and particle diameter. Increasing the amount of the argon gas is helpful in the floatation of the inclusions yet it also shifts the impingement point up. Diminishing the particle diameter removes the inclusions by promoting their flotation but also expands the recycling area in the outlet of the nozzle. The configuration of the throttling direction of the sliding gate parallel to the axis of ports has the most uneven flow in the mold. Such defects can be minimized by the vertical throttling direction arrangement.

This report is the culmination of all the work done in Internship, consummated in the Office of Rehabilitation of the historic center of Castelo Branco, under the Master in Interior Design, taught at the School of Applied Arts. The reason for this choice of study is due to the fact that design is increasingly used in distant working areas such as rehabilitation and preservation of areas with awkward angles and dimensions, creating functional spaces with special equipment designed for each case. Initially I started by studing the historic district regulations, letters, laws, technical terms, among other aspects. The perimeter of the historic order was then represented to have a clear understanding of the exact space that the Office controlled. After this I pointed out the most important streets of the historic area, which permited us to visualize the building structures, ways of living, typologies and surrounding areas. The main project was then presented developing a intervention in the rehabilitation of vacant residential building that offers a high degree of degradation situated at the Arressário street No. 34 and New Lane Street No. 7/9. This is a single family dwelling with characteristic elements that date back to the sixteenth century. This presents itself spread over two floors with separate entrances (access by two streets), however has indoor access between them, as well as an outdoor area. This project was aimed for a young couple with reduced mobility, developed for various stages: recognition of space and photographic survey, measurement and triangulation, space analysis taking into account what could be demolished or not, researching, developing solutions, drawings technical and detailing, three dimensional design, creation of equipment to apply budget and folder. The final design consists of two floors and a patio. At level 0 there is a room to receive family and friends, a bathroom and an office service. On the first floor, private area, there is a double bedroom with a suite bathroom, a hall that can be transformed into a room whenever they want and the kitchen that gives access to the patio. The concept of this project is Origins and the theme is tabique Along with this major project, I developed other tasks, such as: Measurements of the wall next to CIJE; the sixteenth Flyer, which contained information from all points and tourist aspects that can be found if you want to visit the historic area of Castelo Branco´s city and measurements made in the Garden of the Palace

The present postgraduate thesis aims at the investigation of maintenance and distinction of cultural goods, as well as the subject of integration in the modern way of life. Thus, it is structured in three parts. First part concerns in the institutional frame, which has to do with the subjects of safeguarding, but also in theoretical or technical approaches and factors that are related with the distinction. In the second part is exposed the urban and historical development of Patras. It is also located the region in the centre of city which suffers and is downgraded the most, and for this thesis will be called as the intermediary space of Upper and Down city of Patras, while in the third part takes place an effort of effectuation of a scheme, considered all the conclusions that were carried out by the first part, by design proposals, for the particular region.

A Research report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Science in Engineering, 2020
The purpose of this study was to develop a manufacturing cost estimating model, that uses design mass of the component as input, for a steel and sand casting foundry. A relationship between design mass, mould mass, mass with risers and manufacturing cost of the component was to be established. Then, standard costing principles were to be used to develop a parametric relationship linking design mass to manufacturing cost. Lastly, foundry experts were to be consulted for validation of the developed model. A Pearson correlation of 0.764 was found to exist between the model’s intended input (design mass) and the intended output (manufacturing cost). The developed model was found to have a Mean Average Percentage Error (MAPE) of 9.23%. Statistically, it was found that the mean of the manufacturing cost as predicted by the developed model is the same as the mean of the manufacturing cost as predicted by Transnet Engineering Koedoespoort’s current foundry model. Experts that were surveyed, using a questionnaire, found the developed model to be easy to use, flexible, consistent, accurate enough and of appropriate scope

Design has a key role combining development and conception in communication activities and creative industries. Therefore, investigation and theoretical studies have been developed concerning philosophers, designers, artists and authors, approaching the single artistic and communication derived object as a massification object. The relationship between Creativity and Technology allows that each one reinforces its qualities, and values the produced objects, developing an investigation that combines alternative transversal technology; integrating in the communication object different components. The interdisciplinary characteristics of Design and Graphic Production shared with other sectors allow promoting cultural, social, historical, political and scientifical values, integrated in the works of communication and artistic production. The study providing used methodology and integrated projects of different designers and artists, observed in their relations with the different processes, such as Drawing, Design and Graphic and Artistic Production, engaging comparative technological involvements with diverse processes of Experimentation, consent to extend the knowledge developed in the objects created in this context. New approaches in the serigraphic production processes (re)design, projecting exhibitions and communication, throughout studies carried on with design students, transforming canvas into production and project making, in close collaboration with designers and plastic artists, from which we select, in a first instant, seven projects, is what exemplifies the essential importance of the current investigation, which brings together Creativity and Technology, five of which were published completed. The association and involvement between the presented project with Scientifical Institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations, in Portugal and abroad, provide a dimension that justifies the ultimate objective in the opening of experimental spaces, as well as the creation of new interest areas, which in time will allocate the exportation of the Graphic Production, Design, Communication and Multiple Production Arts results
