Abstract:
In this paper I argue that the Mio Cid epithet, most widely associated with the Castilian warrior exile Rodrigo Díaz and traditionally believed to have been bestowed upon him by Arabic speakers, is in fact an autochthonous Castilian formula closely related to equivalent hybrid formulas such as Mi Anaya and Mi Echa. Close attention to the charters of the Northern Meseta allows us to flesh out a small but significant corpus of such references and also observe such names being used in a second idiosyncratic way as generic witnesses. By framing the Mio Cid usage within this broader onomastic tradition, a more solid geography and chronology emerge and these in turn indicate a relatively widespread use of such terms in late eleventh and early twelfth-century Castile, initially in aristocratic circles, before the epithets morphed into personal names.

Abstract:
The diverse literary expressions comprised in the concept “Hispanic literature” —Catalan, Castilian, and Basque as well as the literature from Galicia— form a polysystem of great hermeneutical possibilities, according to the model proposed by Itamar Even-Zohar. A common historic and institutional context gives cohesion to this polysystem, but the existence of particular national traditions introduces differences within it. The study that we present in this article centers on a precise time and genre —post Civil War poetry— and should be considered as another aspect of this vast analytic territory, which could be extended to other periods and other genres. The Castilian system has been at the center of the polysystem, due in large part to political factors. In the 1960s Castilian hegemony gives rise to a form of polycentrism that would have its most innovative and dynamic foci in Castilian and Catalan literatures respectively. The symbolism-realism dialectic —inherited from the pre-War time— extends across the entire period. Francoist refression produced a politicization of literary creation that subordinated forma aspects to the will to denounce. The realist repertoire, which except for the Basque system manifested mainly in exile, is the principal cohesive factor of the Hispanic systems. When this closed code automates itself in the 1960s, codes that had been marginalized will emerge.

It has been argued that Antonio Machado was a late-comer to the so-called Generation of ‘98 and that, with his Campos de Castilla of 1912, he belatedly joined the general chorus for reform of his contemporary writers (Azorín, Baroja, etc.) and began to voice concerns with the backwardness of Castilian rural life and ‘the problem of Spain’ already broached earlier by the so-called Generation of ’98. In effect, Campos de Castilla continues much of the style of his earlier work with added realism. Only three poems of the forty-six of the first edition have explicit reference to a concern for Spain’s decline. With detailed reference to the poems, this article argues that the assertion that Machado was involved in the so-called reformist programme of the Generation of ‘98 needs to be called into question and that Machado in the Soria period was less than the reformist critics have claimed him to be.

On 18 august 1492, the lexicographer and grammarian antonio de nebrija'S castilian grammar—variously referred to as Gramática castellana, Gramática de la lengua castellana, and Gramática sobre la lengua castellana—was printed in Salamanca. Modeled on his earlier Latin grammar, Introductiones latinae (1481), it was the first such systematization of a modern (vernacular) European language and part of an emergent print and lexical humanist culture in the early modern period. Nebrija dedicated the project to Isabel I of Castile in a prologue that opens with a declaration for which the text is notorious: “language was always the companion [compañera] of empire, and followed it such that together [junta mente] they began, grew, and flourished—and, later, together [junta mente] they fell.”

O presente artigo trata da análise de dois textos escritos na Castela Medieval tardia. Ambos são do século XV. Inserem-se no gênero história e literatura. O primeiro é ‘Coplas pela morte de meu pai’ de autoria de Jorge Manrique e o segundo é a obra de Fernando de Rojas, La Celestina. Analisa as ações humanas em prol da salvação de sua alma neste contexto, através destas obras. O tema da morte em Castela é muito presente nos séculos XIV e XV, e segue no XVI. Temas morais e de pureza de sangue permeiam o texto através da análise das duas obras. A reflexão direciona para a construção de uma perspectiva de ênfase da nobiliarquia, valorização do ‘sangue’ e a critica a presença de conversos nos cargos da sociedade. A discriminação se espelha na arte, que reflete a realidade. O diálogo entre a realidade e a ficção se faz através da arte literária. Uma homenagem a Adeline Rucquoi pioneira dos estudos medievais ibéricos.

Abstract:
This study deals with children's literature translated from Castilian Spanish into Galician, Basque and Catalan by a different publisher from that of the source text, between 1940 and 1980, and with the criteria used to choose books for translation during that period. It compares the different literatures within Spain and examines the intersystemic and intercultural relations that the translations reflect. Following the polysystems theory, literature is here conceived as a network of agents of different kinds: authors, publishers, readers, and literary models. Such a network, called a polysystem, is part of a larger social, economic, and cultural network. These extra-literary considerations play an important role in determining the selection of works to be translated. The article suggests that translations can be said to establish transcultural relations, and that they demonstrate different levels of power within a specific interliterary community. It concludes that, while translations may aim to change the pre-existent relationships, frequently they just reflect the status quo.

Abstract This paper aims to get a better insight into the material, literary and historical context surrounding two important, but neglected or unknown, evidences of the dissemination of Castillan literature in the French literature at the end of the Middle Ages. The French translations of Diego de Valera’s Crónica abreviada de España o Valeriana, on the one part, and of Pero López de Ayala’s Crónicas, on the other part, were both achieved between 1504–1506 for the last « Duke of Burgundy » Philip the Fair. Through the investigation of the surviving manuscripts, of the paratext and of the content of these two French texts, will be argued that Vasco de Lucena or Fernando de Lucena are two ideal candidates for their attribution. Moreover, the paper will offer a new perspective on a major evidence of the History of the Castillan language : the Epistola latina et hispanica.

The admiration and worship of the Virgin Mary in the Middle Ages was simply paramount, both in clerical and in secular literature, in the visual arts, and in music. Mary <?page nr="292"?>appears countless times in legendary literature, and so also in Middle English. She might produce miracles and help miserable people in need if they pray hard enough. Those stories were ubiquitous all over medieval Europe, as Williams Boyarin comments, referring to Latin, French, Anglo-Norman, Provençal, Italian, Spanish, Castilian, Arabic, and Ethiopean (10). I wonder, however, what the difference between Spanish and Castilian might be, and why German, French (Gautier de Coincy) or Swedish, Polish or Czech texts are missing entirely in this list. Nevertheless, the focus of the present book rests on Middle English examples, such as those contained in The South English Legendary, in the Vernon Manuscript, and in the collection produced by the printer Wynken de Worde in 1496.

Acto seguido, presentaremos un exercicio de literatura comparada onde poremos en relación as obras de Rosalía coas doutros autores da sua época, o que nos dará una mellor idea do seu papel, tanto nas relacións centro-periferia literarias, como na configuración dunha literatura europea. Veremos como a autora bebe de fontes literarias insospeitadas. Por último, examinaremos a súa obra de para ver como Rosalía escapa de calquera clasificación tradicional posible, sendo o seu espazo de acción, precisamente, a fronteira.Rosalía de Castro (1837-1885) holds a canonic role in both Castilian and Galician literature. A vision of her authorial identity is proposed in terms of Itamar Even-Zohar’s Polysystem Theory, which understands literary translation as a fundamental factor in the concept of influence. Subsequently, an exercise in comparative literature will be presented in which de Castro’s Works are examined in relation to those of other authors of her time, which will shed light on the nature of her role, both in center-periphery relations and in the constitution of a European literature. De Castro’s unsuspected sources of literary inspiration will then be discussed. Lastly it will be considered how de Castro’s body of work has escaped from any traditional classification whatsoever, as its sphere of action is, for all intents and purposes, the border space.

Resumen: El presente trabajo analiza las técnicas de elaboración de cosméticos contenidos en obras de literatura castellana de fines del medievo y primeros momentos del Renacimiento, comparándolas con la realidad recogida en recetarios castellanos coetáneos. En dichas obras aparecen un número importante de recetas que muestran el fin de los afeites, los ingredientes usados en su elaboración y, en menor medida, el proceso o procesos seguidos en su ejecución. Todo ello pone de relieve una faceta poco estudiada de la vida cotidiana del medievo y primeros años del Renacimiento, relacionada con la estética y la belleza y con el cuidado del cuerpo.Palabras clave: canon de belleza, cosmética, literatura castellana, recetas, mujer.Abstract: This paper analyzes the techniques for preparing cosmetic contained in works of Spanish literature of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance times, comparing with reality recipe collection in Castilian contemporaries. Abstract From among the various processes that form prepositions in the history from Latin to Castilian, the investigation concentrates on the formation of prepositional adverbs like Spanish delante (de) ‘in front (of)’. There are two mechanisms for their formation: (a) An adverb or a preposition is preceded by a superordinate simple local preposition which initially specifies a local relation, but ends up as a reinforcing expansion of its base; and (b) an adverb is converted into a preposition by a following functional preposition which serves as a relationalizer. In case #a, the syntactic structure is often destroyed by univerbation, and the resulting reinforced preposition is lexicalized. In case #b, the alternation between adverb and relationalized preposition is regular and bidirectional, so that the combination of adverb and relationalizer is normally not univerbated. The exception desde is given some attention. As a result, the formation of prepositions of this structure is, at the outset, not a matter of word formation, and such complex prepositions are therefore not compound prepositions, but instead lexicalized univerbations.

Se analizan sus características, contrastándolas con las del humanismo latino clasicista del siglo XV. Se ilustra por qué es un humanismo total, que, por influjo de la filosofía aristotélica, incluye las letras y las ciencias, e integrador de las tres culturas presentes en la sociedad peninsular del siglo XIII, las cuales usaron el vernáculo como lengua común.Palabras clave: Humanismo medieval, humanismo vernáculo, humanismo latino clasicista, el castellano lengua de cultura, Alfonso X el Sabio.Abstract: A study of the origins of Castilian vernacular humanism in the context of medieval humanism. Este artículo pretende reflexionar sobre la formación literaria que reciben los futuros maestros, concretamente, en literatura infantil. Con este objetivo, se presenta el estudio cualitativo llevado a cabo a través de la experiencia didáctica realizada con los estudiantes de Educación Infantil de la Facultad de Educación de Toledo de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha y a través de la cual se pretendió efectuar una introducción a la literatura infantil en lengua inglesa con base didáctica en el contexto de la materia optativa Literatura Infantil en Lengua Inglesa y su Didáctica. En primer lugar, se describen algunos beneficios derivados de la inclusión de la literatura infantil y de su utilización en las primeras etapas educativas, revisando para ello algunas aportaciones teóricas relevantes. Posteriormente, se argumenta sobre la necesidad de formación en literatura infantil que presentan los futuros maestros para el provecho desempeño de su ocupación, así como para la transmisión literaria en el aula de niveles educativos iniciales. En tercer lugar, la presente contribución describe en detalle el enfoque didáctico adoptado con los maestros en formación, atendiendo a los objetivos, contenidos, resultados del aprendizaje que se pretenden alcanzar y sistema de evaluación propuesto. Una vez referido el diseño de la investigación, así como el contexto y los participantes, se exponen los resultados del cuestionario que realizaron los estudiantes después de haber completado su formación y realizado las actividades descritas. Por último, y a la luz de estos resultados, este artículo reflexiona sobre la opinión y grado de satisfacción observados en el estudio cualitativo y mostrado por los estudiantes participantes después de la puesta en práctica de esta propuesta de carácter teórico-práctico en el primer cuatrimestre del curso académico 2015-2016. The aim of this contribution is to reflect on literature training provided to future teachers, particularly, Children’s Literature. To this end, a qualitative study has been conducted by means of a didactic experience undertaken at the Faculty of Education in Toledo with the students of the Degree in Infant Education Teaching at University of Castilla-La Mancha. Through this didactic experience, students were assumed to gain knowledge of the main contributions to Children’s Literature in the context of the elective course Children’s Literature in English and its Didactics. Firstly, some advantages of the inclusion of Children’s Literature and its possibilities at early educational levels are revised through some of the most relevant authors on the field. Secondly, this paper pays attention to the necessity of including Children’s Literature in Infant Education Studies, giving its importance in early educational levels. Thirdly, this article shows the approach followed in the course as well as its main objectives, contents, learning outcomes and assessment criteria implemented. Once the main aspects of the study such as the design, methodology and participants have been described, this paper focuses on the analysis of the results obtained in the qualitative study conducted. Finally, this article considers the participants’ opinion and satisfaction rate obtained from the results of the study at the end of the didactic intervention carried out in the first semester of the Academic Year 2015-2016.

En primer lugar, se describen algunos beneficios derivados de la inclusión de la literatura infantil y de su utilización en las primeras etapas educativas, revisando para ello algunas aportaciones teóricas relevantes. Posteriormente, se argumenta sobre la necesidad de formación en literatura infantil que presentan los futuros maestros para el provecho desempeño de su ocupación, así como para la transmisión literaria en el aula de niveles educativos iniciales. En tercer lugar, la presente contribución describe en detalle el enfoque didáctico adoptado con los maestros en formación, atendiendo a los objetivos, contenidos, resultados del aprendizaje que se pretenden alcanzar y sistema de evaluación propuesto. Una vez referido el diseño de la investigación, así como el contexto y los participantes, se exponen los resultados del cuestionario que realizaron los estudiantes después de haber completado su formación y realizado las actividades descritas. Por último, y a la luz de estos resultados, este artículo reflexiona sobre la opinión y grado de satisfacción observados en el estudio cualitativo y mostrado por los estudiantes participantes después de la puesta en práctica de esta propuesta de carácter teórico-práctico en el primer cuatrimestre del curso académico 2015-2016. The aim of this contribution is to reflect on literature training provided to future teachers, particularly, Children’s Literature. Puesto que la primera parte de esta investigación estuvo consagrada a los occidentalismos fonéticos, nos enfocaremos ahora en los morfosintácticos y léxicos; comentaremos un ejemplo del primer grupo y diez del segundo. Volveremos a prestar atención tanto a los occidentalismos evidentes, esto es, los que aún se manifiestan abiertamente en los testimonios, como a los conjeturales, los que pueden entreverse tras sus errores. The aim of this paper is to report the results of a study of Murcian speech in order to measure the increasing diffusion of standard Castilian features from northern Peninsular Spanish over Murcian Spanish, a traditionally non-standard region. Following the methodology used in similar studies and a real-time approach, we measured the level of standardization of people interviewed in radio broadcasts in the last 26 years. A detailed analysis correlating linguistic variables with social variables and time intervals allowed us to compare the sociolinguistic behavior of the different social groups in terms of standardization (adoption of Castilian Spanish features) or non-standardization (maintenance of local Murcian features) and their tendencies in diachronic terms.

Abstract Social situations of language coexistence have resulted in linguistic manifestations of bilingualism and diglossia, including linguistic interference, lexical loans and code switching. What role does prosody play in social bilingualism? In other words, when contact between different languages is not restricted to the individual but affects an entire speech community, does a dominant prosody exist? Does prosody vary among different linguistic varieties? In order to find an answer to these questions, we hereby show the results of a research project on the prosodic features of Asturian and Castilian spoken in the centre of Asturias. This experimental study is based on the speech of four informants from Oviedo – two men and two women – two of which speak Castilian, while the other two speak Asturian.

This paper explores the language attitudes of listeners from six different regions of Spain, Asturias, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, the Canary Islands, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, towards a nonsibilant variant of coda /s/, the velarized /s/. This velar pronunciation, known by some as the ejque madrileño, has previously been found to index a Madrid identity for Madrileño listeners, though the traits ascribed such a speaker are quite negative. The current paper finds that like Madrileños themselves, participants from Asturias and Castile and León also associate velarized /s/ with Madrid. Participants from Castile-La Mancha, the Canary Islands, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands do not consider the velarized variant to be Madrileño. Furthermore, differing judgments of the nonsibilant /s/ are found among the regions tested, with participants from Catalonia and the Balearic Islands showing the most negative judgments while participants from Castile-La Mancha show no negative variable effect in their judgments. It is found that all of these out-group listeners do not show as severe of judgments as those seen by in-group members (Madrilenos themselves) in previous literature.

Tampoco Alfonso X mostró en sus obras históricas interés por esta idea, quizá porque la consideraba limitada para su visión de la historia. Sin embargo, en el siglo XV se observa un tratamiento detallado de ésta, en el marco de la teoría curial y del debate sobre la institución imperial. Alonso de Cartagena, Sánchez de Arévalo y Torquemada hicieron destacadas aportaciones. Finalmente, con Nebrija, la translatio imperii se subordina a la exaltación de las aspiraciones imperiales de Castilla.

This essay is an exploration of Seneca’s influence on the bilingual (Catalan and Castilian) production, including poems and prose works, of Fra Francesc Moner, an extraordinarily talented Catalan writer of the late Middle Ages. After sampling Moner’s pithy renditions of Seneca’s sententious rhetoric, this essay delves into Moner’s assimilation of the salient topics and motifs that distinguish the Stoic philosophical system of Senecan vintage. The essay takes into account, particularly, some points of coincidence between Moner’s senequismo and that of Ausiàs March, the incomparable Valencian poet of the first half of the fifteenth century. An analysis of these coincidences suggests that Moner inherits from March a keen sensitivity to the metaphysical bond between the literary text as an icon of subjectivity and the moment-to-moment unfolding of human existence.

Abstract This study focuses on a problem which has been widely debated among specialists in epic literature, Hispanists and Romance Philologists, that is the supposed existence of a Chanson de Geste written in Castilian («Cantar de Rodlane») around 1060–1070. According to Ramón Menéndez Pidal, this text could be the direct source for the famous and anonymous Nota Emilianense. Nevertheless, a thorough analysis of the arguments proposed by Menéndez Pidal leads to the conclusion that the Cantar de Rodlane probably never existed and, on the other hand, that some of the principles of Pidal’s neotraditionalist theory should be critically revisited.

El relato de traslación de reliquias es un género de literatura religiosa que no tuvo amplio desarrollo en la Castilla medieval. Pero Alonso de Cartagena contribuyó a éste notablemente. En 1453, durante una visita pastoral, decidió trasladar las reliquias de santa Juliana a un lugar más honorable. Compuso un relato de los hechos que se ajusta con rigor a los rasgos del género. Escrito en castellano, contiene una exposición sobre la conveniencia del culto a los santos y sus reliquias de intensa inspiración tomista, que expone con rigor y claridad cuestiones teológicas. Las disposiciones sobre la decoración de la capilla de las reliquias ofrecen por su posición equidistante un interesante testimonio del debate sobre la imagen religiosa que se desarrollaba entonces en Castilla.
