Abstract:
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2007.

As the stigma of gambling fades and governments seek more sources of revenue the urban casino is becoming more common. Many of these are legalized to operate with limited competition in their state, standing alone in their respective city. while the general, diffuse impacts of casinos have been well studied, the paucity of casinos in urban settings has left a gap in the understanding of how stand-alone casinos affect their urban context. This thesis seeks to fill this gap by analyzing three of the oldest stand-alone urban casinos in the United States: Harrah's Casino in Joliet, Harrah's Casino in New Orleans, and Greektown Casino in Detroit. The thesis analyzes the impact of each of these casinos through the lens of five categories of impact: urban design of the neighborhood, city investment, real estate development, street-level commerce, and the residential community. The resulting analysis finds that casinos tend to be insular entities that do not impact much outside their own footprint. Their greatest potential for external impacts is an ability to act as an anchor for street-level commerce in a neighborhood if designed properly, a trend that has been observed for some time in resort communities with fake interior streets. The essay concludes with recommendations on how a city might engender a similar phenomenon.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to evaluate the perceptions and attitudes of residents about the existence of a casino in the Espinho municipality. To achieve this objective a theoretical reflection was undertaken, supported by a bibliographic research about the following topics: characterization of the casino industry, host’s perceptions of casino impacts and host’s attitudes towards casinos. Several models discussed in the literature to assess host’s perceptions of tourism impacts and host’s attittudes towards tourism were analysed. Based on these theoretical reflections, a research model to identify the factors that influence the host’s attitudes towards casinos was proposed. The research model was empirically tested in the Espinho minicipality, an area in the North of Portugal. In order to accomplish this objective, a resident survey was undertaken, between July and October of 2010, resulting in 222 residents interviewed The questionnaire included questions related to the sociodemographic profile of the residents, as well as the perceptions of casino impacts and their attitudes towards this activity. The results obtained reveal that, globally, the Espinho’s residents consider that the casino has positive impacts, mainly in economic terms, but they are, also, paying attention to the social and cultural costs, such as the increase of gambling addiction, family destruction, and political corruption. In relation to their attitudes towards the casino, the study identified that the residents who perceived individual and group benefits of this activity are more likely to support the development of this activity and feel proud and satisfaction for the existence of this structure in the municipality. The results obtained, also, reveal that the residents who attend the casino, as a game or an animation structure, considered that this sector is as good as any other, and feel proud and satisfaction for its existence. Further, the study shows that economic dependence from the casino, knowledge about casino and tourism practices and the perception of individual and group benefits were the most important factors that influence host’s attitudes towards the casino. It was also showed that the quantity of residents who perceived benefits is elevated but it is necessary to pay special attention to the negative impacts, as far as social and cultural costs are concerned, since they are largely identified by all residents, despite their age, gender, academic skills and their monthly income.

Abstract:

The number of casinos has grown substantially since 1990 as states and localities try to find new tax revenue and jobs. After some initial successes across the United States and Canada, the strategy has become even more popular. With a business so dependent on tourists, how has the spread of casino gambling affected the returns communities get from hosting casinos? Broadly speaking when neighboring areas pursue the same economic development strategy, is any economic development actually occurring or are benefits just being transferred from one to the other? This analysis addresses that question and provides some preliminary evidence. Casinos have positively impacted economic conditions at the county level, though the benefits are strongest in the early stages of the casino's existence. Competition with other casinos has had negative effects on the tax revenue individual casinos pay to states. More importantly, casino competition has negatively affected economic development impacts of existing casinos, though in most cases the net benefits are still positive.

Abstract:
Since 1987, casino games and the general image of casinos have gone through a profond change. Where previously, this type of activity was stigmatized by the potential damage it could lead to, it has now become an individual or collective leisure, socially acceptable. The slot machines legalization in 1987 brought about an industrialisation of casinos and this underlined a turning point for these firms. They became places that develop a specific form of sociability. The casino layout is now organized using appropriate marketing techniques which can also be found in the recreation parks or clubs for example. These marketing techniques are building the casino as a new place for communication. But casinos represent high economic stakes and an important source of income for the public finances. This is the main reason why governements legalize them despite the moral and social objections. Last but not least, casino has become instrumental in local development as it is now part of the tourist industry ; Where more often they are considered as a means to promote the area where they are established

Abstract:
Apparently, gambling seems to be valued as a leisure activity and a form of entertainment in many parts of the world. Public attitudes toward gambling have shifted from viewing it as a vice to treating it as an opportunity to exploit (Eadington 1997, 2000). Relaxation of constraints on existing commercial gaming activities and legislative change in authorising gambling has occurred extensively. The proliferation of casinos makes people perceive gambling as a legitimate activity and as an economic hope. According to Pizam and Pokela (1985), casino gambling however is a controversial tourism development strategy. Eadington (1986) also points out that legalised gambling causes economic and social changes in communities and changes their image. Thus, both the character and reputation of the community may be altered as a result of initiating casinos as a tourist attraction. The legalisation of gambling has been a subject of considerable debates in Thailand for a decade and it has been brought into the cabinets meeting from time to time. Some politicians and academic scholars suggest that casinos should be introduced as a tourism development strategy to combat the countrys economic and financial crisis. Many people are attached to strong belief that gambling is a sinful activity. It is inherently immoral and contrary to accepted family and social values. It is a voluntary regressive tax in which its effects fall most heavily on lower-income groups. It is morally wrong, and can cause an addiction that is often linked to personal and family tragedies. It also attracts criminal activities and political corruption (Piriyarangsan et al. 2003; Cornwel-Smith 2005). As social acceptance of casino gambling has globally increased, this research aims to gauge hospitality management perspectives on gambling and casino tourism. The focus of the paper is to investigate hospitality executives attitudes towards relationship between Thai tourism and casino gambling; to explore their views on casino legalisation and regulation; as well as to examine their opinions about casino impacts, operation and management if casinos are legalised in Thailand. Mail questionnaires were carried out during September 2003 - February 2004, resulting in 212 returns of respondents. Then, 18 semi-structured interviews with hotel and tour executives, politicians, policemen, government officials, directors of social service organisations and religious leaders were undertaken in May - July 2005 to acquire more insights into the issues. A combination of quantitative and qualitative data indicates that Thai people have mixed feelings about casino tourism. Although quantitative findings show hospitality group welcome the idea, but they do not want it in their own backyard. Qualitative results are more in opposition. Majority of interviewees hold the differing views. The study concludes that casinos gambling may function simply as a value added or an enhancement to a destination in Thailand, not a main tourism attraction. It is strongly suggested that casino gambling and Thai tourism industry should not be connected. Instead, Thai hospitality and cultures should be promoted as a unique tourism product of Thailand.

Abstract:
Relatively little is known about Canadian casino employees. The present study is a broad-based investigation intended to shed some light on this population. There were several specific areas of investigation. These included job satisfaction, substance use and abuse, gambling behaviour, gambling attitudes and beliefs, and problem gambling status. Because of this high-risk group’s excessive exposure to gambling, casino employees’ gambling behaviour may be indicative of the general adult population’s future gambling behaviour. Although there is some prior evidence of higher rates of problem gambling in this population, the causal direction of this relationship is not well established. That is, does working in a casino place employees at a higher risk for problem gambling, or does the industry actually attract problem gamblers? The present study investigated the characteristics of 123 Canadian casino employees from two Alberta casinos. The study aimed to establish the actual impact of casino employment on substance use and gambling behaviour by means of a follow-up questionnaire that was distributed six months after the baseline questionnaire was collected. The results of the follow-up questionnaire tentatively suggest that problem gamblers are attracted to the casino industry, rather than the casino industry placing its employees at a higher risk for problem gambling. The study also found that Northern Albertan casino employees have higher rates of smoking, alcohol use, illicit drug use, medication use, gambling, and problem gambling than the general Albertan workforce.

Albarrán-Torres, César Alberto. "Encoding chance: a technocultural analysis of digital gambling." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/13061.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how gambling and gambling-like practices are increasingly mediated by digital technologies. Digital gambling brings gambling closer to the practices and features of videogames, as audiovisual simulations structure users’ experiences. New forms of digital gambling have clear political implications and institute new economic dynamics, as operators increasingly rely on the exploitation of constant interaction, as well as fostering compulsive play. By studying digital gambling from media studies, videogame and cultural studies approaches, this thesis offers a new critical perspective on the issues raised by computer-mediated gambling, while expanding our perspective on what media and gambling are. Current research on gambling practices and markets in disciplines such as psychology, sociology and law has positioned wagering as an exceptional activity because of its association with problem gambling, taxation and financial loss. The increasingly malleable nature of digital gambling media complicates these understandings. Digital gambling and play take a number of shapes: state-of-the-art slot machines, desktop platforms and mobile apps for smartphones and tablets. These cultural forms involve both gambling companies such as Aristocrat and IGT, and videogame companies such as Atari and Zynga. Digital gambling products are consumed by millions of users, primarily in Australia, Europe and North America. In contemporary forms of digital gambling, many users have a gambling or gambling-like experience with or without real money involved. Consumers pay with money and/or labour and/or time and/or access to their digital social networks and contacts. These dynamics represent a significant departure from previous gambling studies, which only consider gambling as those games that involve real money and are demarcated from everyday life. The development of digital gambling sees new cultural forms, including gamble-play media (gambling and gambling-like platforms constructed as videogames), the procedure-image (images that articulate interactive rhetoric), mobile social gambling (the practice carried out through social casino apps) and gambling-machines (an iteration of Deleuze and Guattari’s desiring-machines). Digital gambling operates through assemblages that are materially heterogeneous and increasingly deterritorialised. Through a selection of case studies – including the 3D online casino PKR, the mobile apps Slotomania and Slots Journey, the Electronic Gaming Machine market in New South Wales, Australia, and the online casinos PokerStars and 888 – this thesis analyses the interplay between various digital gambling assemblages and their relations to other media such as videogames and social networking sites.

This study aims to analyze the social representations of different institutional leaders regarding the casino customers, their main motivations and role of the casino in daily life. The methodology was qualitative - phenomenological using semi-structured interviews. Participants were eight leaders of religious, political, and mental health institutions, and government officials. The results show that adult women are represented as the group with greater presence in the casinos. Loneliness and pathological gambling are part of the social representation of the players, with variations according to the institution that the leaders represent. The relevance of generating investigative processes that expand the concept of the games in casinos and impact on public health policies and socioeconomic development is discussed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: For the purposes of this study the term "gambling" refers only to casino style gambling and does not necessarily include horse racing and the national lottery. The study is partly based on the theoretical model for policy analysis as described by Dunn in his book "Public Policy Analysis" (1994). The thesis is divided into two sections. The first section deals mainly with the stage of monitoring and is a retrospective analysis of the development of the gambling industry in seventeenth and eighteenth century Venice and more recently in the United States, Australia, Namibia and South Afiica prior to 1994. The last section deals mainly with the stage of policy evaluation and questions the possible discrepancies between the expected and actual gambling policy performance in the Western Cape after 1994 when large scale gambling was legalised throughout the country. It uses the recommendations of the Main Report on Gambling in the Republic of South Afiica (Wiehahn Report) as a basis for the evaluation of the Western Cape gambling policy from both a social and economic perspective. More specifically the study attempts to shed light on the issues of the problems related to the scientific research of gambling, the economic profile of gamblers, the location of casinos, the displacement of capital and the correlation between crime and gambling.

Abstract:
The political sovereignty of indigenous Southern Californians has deep history of disenfranchisement and paternalism. A steady decline characterized the political authority and autonomy from the 18th century to 1850 when indigenous tribes of Southern California were in proximity of Spanish Missionaries and later, Mexican ranchers. Following the inclusion of California into the Union, this decline turned into a sharp drop. This paper looks at the history of these people under the three above-mentioned time frames and then analyzes how tribal gaming is effecting the current political sovereignty of Southern Californian Tribes. Special attention is given to the Barona Casino in San Diego to put into context, how tribal gaming is serving as a catalyst for change in the relationship between the California state government and tribal governments.

Abstract:
Since casino liberalization, Macau has been undergoing metaphoric changes that are fundamental, rapid, and far-reaching. This poses a challenge to Macau people to cope with life changing circumstances to the extent of rediscovering their hometown which have changed profoundly as evident by the city‘s ever-changing skyline. Having said so, this study aims to explore the effects of large-scale casino development on Macau residents‘ sense of place, and how their changing sense of place determines their support for casino development. To achieve this study purpose, three interrelated research objectives are laid down for the study. They are (1) to assess the impact of casino liberalization on Macau society, (2) to describe Macau residents’ sense of place amid the casino boom, and (3) to delineate the structural relationship between casino impact, sense of place, place satisfaction, and support for casino development. By using a purely quantitative approach based on a comprehensive resident survey, the study identified both positive and negative casino impact factors as affecting Macau people economically, socially, and environmentally. More importantly, these casino impact factors were also found to exhibit significant predictive power in explaining respondents‘ sense of place intensity, therefore empirically validating a posited relationship between the impact of casino development and inhabitants’ sense of place. The study also found that respondents’ sense of place carried obvious connotations of modernity and exquisiteness because respondents were using everyday vocabularies such as ‘rich’, ‘lively’, ‘developed’, and ‘unique’ to express their perceptions of the new Macau. This brief glossary of words, which characterizes successful urban development, was also found to associate strongly with their sense of place assessments. Finally, the study validated an integrated conceptual model within which the sense of place construct assumes a decisive role in affecting place satisfaction and support for casino development. The contribution of this study lies in the fact it has brought to our attention residents’ sense of place as an important determinant for the success of any large-scale tourism project such as casino development. This study has also provided a new breath to the traditional casino impact studies by taking a new look at an old problem through a cross-disciplinary perspective.

Shrestha, Mona. "Exploring gendered work and women's empowerment : a study of hotels, resorts and casinos in Nepal." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2013. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/57260/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores gendered work and women‟s empowerment in interactive service work in Nepal, focusing on two five-star hotels, two deluxe resorts and two casinos. It develops a conceptual framework to explore how gendered work and women‟s empowerment are related, paying attention to the interactional and structural levels. This feminist research uses mixed methods of 21 questionnaires to gather quantitative data that shed light on the gendered workforce. Qualitative data is derived from 65 interviews (semi-structured and in-depth) with male and female workers, managers, male family members and policy experts, two focus group discussions with women working in two casinos and observations in the six sample establishments. The study makes three arguments. First, gendered work is constructed by three distinct but related dimensions, namely: the gender division of labour; the gendered ideologies of managers and workers; and the gendering of skills provided through training. Second, workers, to a variable extent, perform gendered emotional, aesthetic and (hetero) sexualised labour and such performances shape and are shaped by gendered work. Third, women‟s paid work empowers them to some extent at an individual level; however, structural constraints continue to impede their empowerment. The thesis makes theoretical as well as empirical contributions to existing knowledge. Theoretically, it contributes to understanding of the relationship between gendered work and empowerment in which structural context is of critical significance. At the empirical level, this makes an original contribution to the analysis of interactive service work in Nepal. The thesis finds that women doing gendered work are to some extent empowered at the individual level and perhaps „doing‟ gender per se is not a problem. However, structural constraints continue to impede women‟s empowerment, despite some gradual changes. The thesis also finds that the hotel and casino sector are not feminised in contrast to studies conducted in the „West‟.

Abstract:
Published Article
This paper synthesises, as its primary aim, through an integrative literature review, a new perspective on two major implications of the proposed legalisation of internet casinos in South Africa, which is: the effect on the auditor's business risk as well as the effect on audit risk. As its secondary aim the paper argues that legalisation of internet casinos in South Africa is imminent and that relative to other business, heavy reliance will be placed on the external auditor to ensure the internet casinos' compliance with various laws. The relevance and application of an integrative literature review is motivated. International perspectives are applied to the South African context. The paper demonstrates the relationship between the concepts of the auditor's business risk and audit risk by establishing that the auditor's business risk flows from possible accountability that may stem from significant audit risk that is not addressed during the audit engagement. The paper argues that the operational context of an internet casino in South Africa will be relatively unique and that three interrelating factors will create significant audit risk. The three significant factors are shown to be going concern, regulatory and information technology impacts. Failure by the auditor to recognise and respond appropriately to this audit risk may lead to serious consequences for the practitioner which may include regulatory intervention, reputational based losses or litigation. The impact of the International Standards on Auditing in this context is explored throughout and it is concluded that adherence to these standards will sufficiently mitigate significant audit risk as well as the auditor's business risk.

Playing is intrinsic ton mankind and since the human being is profoundly fond of games, he plays for money. Therefore the State [in its function] must take charge of this activity. Theoretically prohibited, gambling has developed essentially in three distinct domains in which the State has control: lotteries and games cards, casinos games (slot machines) and betting on horses races. As games evolve with society, they follow suit and adapt to new techniques that could be their support and a means diffusions. One can encounter the same games through various types of communication channels and medias, notably the internet. The legal system rapidly find itself inadequate, and outmoded
