Abstract:
A word can carry different meanings for different people. Conjoint analysis was applied to assess preferences for various words describing integrated resorts (IR) including casinos, to be introduced in Japan in the future. We discuss how the participants understood particular words (e.g., a specific casino’s place name or wording regarding restrictions on betting) that define the characteristics of a casino, as well as how casino-related words influenced participants’ preferences. Implications for enhancing public understanding of casinos are explored in the conclusion.

Abstract:
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a popular, and even expected, strategy for promoting an organization’s public persona. CSR is particularly important in the casino industry since many customers associate the casino industry with negative images such as crime and drugs; therefore, casinos try to enhance their social image through CSR activities. This study investigated how casinos’ CSR activities (economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic) influenced customer loyalty (CL). Partial Least Squares (PLS)-structural equation modeling analysis was used to examine the hypotheses on a sample of 251 casino’s customer in the United States. Results of this study showed that the dimensions of philanthropic and legal responsibilities had varying effects on CL. In contrast, economic and ethical responsibilities didn’t significantly affect CL.

Abstract:
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives play an important starring role in changing the livelihoods of community members close to casinos around Gauteng. In addition, a contested industry such as gaming needs to ensure CSR initiatives are in place and communicated. The specific objective was to develop a CSR conceptual framework with guidelines for implementation in the casino industry using an Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). The study used quantitative research approach which involved eight casinos in Gauteng province, South Africa. Accidental sampling was used with a sample size of 385 with adjacent community members. Structured questionnaires were used as data collection instrument. The results indicated that social aspects and involvement, business and socio-environment, financial contribution, community basic services and food and nutrition are the basic initiatives to be incorporated in casino’s strategies and communicated to different stakeholders in order to improve community satisfaction, ideal public relations and gaining competitive advantage. Findings offer valuable cognizance in helping community members, Gauteng Gambling Board, CSR managers in casinos, employees and other interested stakeholders to review and evaluate the casinos’ CSR policies and implementation strategies.

Abstract:
The government of Goa has been promoting casino tourism in Goa arguing that promoting casinos is necessary to bolster the economic growth of Goa especially in the aftermath of the mining ban that deprived Goa and its government of the substantial revenue generated through mining. The casino promotion, however, has met with strong protests in Goa from the time the government decided to encourage casinos to expand the growth of tourism in Goa. Casinos have taken strong roots in Goa and clearing the ever-growing forest of casinos is becoming more and more difficult as years roll by. The offshore casinos have almost fused with the landscape of Panjim making it almost next to impossible to visualize Panjim and the river Mandovi sans the casinos. At this juncture, accepting, despite all opposition, that the reality of Panjim ‘casinoscape’ will linger on into the future, the challenges ahead lie in implementing sustainable strategies to maximize the gains from casinos and counteract the prospective ill-effects from casino type tourism instead of imagining a return back to the Panjim of the 1990s and earlier.

AbstractThe island of Cuba was the center for casino in the Western Hemisphere for many decades in the mid‐twentieth century. This paper looks at those years and the development of the gambling industry from the early 1900s until the time casinos were closed in 1959 after a political revolution led by Fidel Castro. Castro served as the dictator of Cuba from 1959 into the 21st century. After he died in 2016, he was succeeded in power by his brother Raul Castro. Many interests in the gaming industry, some even from earlier years in Cuba, now see the possibilities of reestablishing some of the 13 casinos that had been opened before 1959. This paper looks at the history of Cuba casinos and the prospects that casino gaming may return to the island.

Abstract:
Research shows that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) and that eliminating smoking indoors fully protects nonsmokers from indoor SHS exposure. Casinos often allow smoking indoors and can be a source of involuntary SHS exposure for employees and visitors. We examined attitudes toward smoke-free casino policies among US adults. During June and July 2017, we used a web-based survey to ask a nationally representative sample of 4107 adults aged ≥18 about their attitudes toward smoke-free casinos. Among 4048 respondents aged ≥18, a weighted 75.0% favored smoke-free casino policies, including respondents who visited casinos about once per year (74.1%), several times per year (75.3%), and at least once per month (74.2%). Although the sociodemographic characteristics of respondents who favored smoke-free casino policies varied, the majority in each group, except current smokers (45.4%), supported smoke-free policies. Allowing smoking inside casinos involuntarily exposes casino employees and visitors to SHS, a known and preventable health risk. Further assessment of public knowledge and attitudes toward smoke-free casinos at state and local levels may help inform tobacco control policy, planning, and practice.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the positive aspects of casinos, and gambling entertainment in particular, by revealing the health potential of these commercial establishments. In doing so, this work helps explain the affinity of Chinese consumers with gambling. Design/methodology/approach – The authors draw on Attention Restoration Theory to put forth a framework on the restorative potential of a casino on human health and its effects on managerial outcomes. The authors use a sample of 605 Chinese tourists in Macau and use both structural equation modeling and moderation analyses. Findings – Tourists’ ability to sense a casino’s restorative potential is positively related to their well-being and their propensity to view Macau as a value, to spend money in Macau and to revisit Macau. Moderation analyses reveal that tourists may still perceive a casino’s restorative qualities regardless of whether they plan to engage in gambling or other activities, are winning or losing money or reside outside mainland China. Research limitations/implications – The paper links gaming studies to the transformative research paradigm and considers the possibility that some socially unacceptable services may actually be beneficial to human well-being. Practical implications – The results help clarify why Chinese tourists tend to engage in casino patronage and gambling activities throughout the world. Social implications – This work discusses health benefits associated with socially unacceptable products and suggests that many “sinful services” may offer consumers transformative benefits. Originality/value – The paper is one of the first to explore positive aspects of gambling and spending time in casino environments, while showing that casinos may be “healthy places” for some consumers.

Abstract:
As U.S. politicians and voters continue to grapple with the slower-than-expected recovery from the 2007-09 recession, the legalization (or expansion) of commercial casinos has become an increasingly popular policy. Casinos are politically popular because the state government legalizes them, and can thus create a new industry which pays high taxes and may stimulate employment and economic development. Despite the fact that casinos are now widespread in the United States – there are around 1,000 commercial and tribal casinos – the empirical evidence on their economic impacts is still negligible. In two previous studies ( we have tested the relationship between state-level casino revenues and per capita income (i.e., economic growth) to provide evidence on whether or not casinos have a positive economic impact on states’ economies. We have utilized a Granger causality model modified for use with panel data. Our initial evidence, from a paper published in 1998, indicated that casinos do Granger cause economic growth. However, when we re-tested the model using up-to-date data (at the time, through 2005), we found no significant results. The casino industry has grown extensively since 2005, and although the recession of 2007-09 had a negative impact on the casino industry, the national-level revenue numbers are again climbing. We extend our previous analyses in order to provide updated evidence on the economic growth impact of commercial casinos in the United States. Section 2 provides a more detailed background of our previous analysis and an overview of other relevant literature. Section 3 describes the data and model, and provides the results. Section 4 is a discussion and conclusion.

Abstract:
Understanding what attributes are sought by casino visitors during their visit to a casino can enable casino operators to enhance the quality of service elements. This study assessed the important casino attributes that casino visitors seek when visiting a casino. The study also seek to identify the major segments of casino visitors with similar preferences for casino attributes, and determine whether difference(s) may exist between segments in terms of trip behavior and socio-demographic characteristics. Using the benefit segmentation approach, quantitative data were collected from 371 Chinese casino visitors. Four distinct segments of Chinese casino visitors were identified; namely games customers, casual tryout customers, employee service customers, and casino goers. Two segments were actually concerned with gaming specifically. Based on the findings, we established that casinos need to identify strategic segments and allocate adequate resources to achieve the competitive advantages of each segment. Casinos also need to develop innovative products or services for particular segments whose members may not see gaming as the main reason to visit casinos. This research highlights the need to use benefit segmentation to understand the visitors to casino properties.

As the stigma of gambling fades and governments seek more sources of revenue the urban casino is becoming more common. Many of these are legalized to operate with limited competition in their state, standing alone in their respective city. while the general, diffuse impacts of casinos have been well studied, the paucity of casinos in urban settings has left a gap in the understanding of how stand-alone casinos affect their urban context. This thesis seeks to fill this gap by analyzing three of the oldest stand-alone urban casinos in the United States: Harrah's Casino in Joliet, Harrah's Casino in New Orleans, and Greektown Casino in Detroit. The thesis analyzes the impact of each of these casinos through the lens of five categories of impact: urban design of the neighborhood, city investment, real estate development, street-level commerce, and the residential community. The resulting analysis finds that casinos tend to be insular entities that do not impact much outside their own footprint. Their greatest potential for external impacts is an ability to act as an anchor for street-level commerce in a neighborhood if designed properly, a trend that has been observed for some time in resort communities with fake interior streets. The essay concludes with recommendations on how a city might engender a similar phenomenon.

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to evaluate the perceptions and attitudes of residents about the existence of a casino in the Espinho municipality. To achieve this objective a theoretical reflection was undertaken, supported by a bibliographic research about the following topics: characterization of the casino industry, host’s perceptions of casino impacts and host’s attitudes towards casinos. Several models discussed in the literature to assess host’s perceptions of tourism impacts and host’s attittudes towards tourism were analysed. Based on these theoretical reflections, a research model to identify the factors that influence the host’s attitudes towards casinos was proposed. The research model was empirically tested in the Espinho minicipality, an area in the North of Portugal. In order to accomplish this objective, a resident survey was undertaken, between July and October of 2010, resulting in 222 residents interviewed The questionnaire included questions related to the sociodemographic profile of the residents, as well as the perceptions of casino impacts and their attitudes towards this activity. The results obtained reveal that, globally, the Espinho’s residents consider that the casino has positive impacts, mainly in economic terms, but they are, also, paying attention to the social and cultural costs, such as the increase of gambling addiction, family destruction, and political corruption. In relation to their attitudes towards the casino, the study identified that the residents who perceived individual and group benefits of this activity are more likely to support the development of this activity and feel proud and satisfaction for the existence of this structure in the municipality. The results obtained, also, reveal that the residents who attend the casino, as a game or an animation structure, considered that this sector is as good as any other, and feel proud and satisfaction for its existence. Further, the study shows that economic dependence from the casino, knowledge about casino and tourism practices and the perception of individual and group benefits were the most important factors that influence host’s attitudes towards the casino. It was also showed that the quantity of residents who perceived benefits is elevated but it is necessary to pay special attention to the negative impacts, as far as social and cultural costs are concerned, since they are largely identified by all residents, despite their age, gender, academic skills and their monthly income.

Abstract:

The number of casinos has grown substantially since 1990 as states and localities try to find new tax revenue and jobs. After some initial successes across the United States and Canada, the strategy has become even more popular. With a business so dependent on tourists, how has the spread of casino gambling affected the returns communities get from hosting casinos? Broadly speaking when neighboring areas pursue the same economic development strategy, is any economic development actually occurring or are benefits just being transferred from one to the other? This analysis addresses that question and provides some preliminary evidence. Casinos have positively impacted economic conditions at the county level, though the benefits are strongest in the early stages of the casino's existence. Competition with other casinos has had negative effects on the tax revenue individual casinos pay to states. More importantly, casino competition has negatively affected economic development impacts of existing casinos, though in most cases the net benefits are still positive.

Abstract:
The interface condition between the different casings in a multi-cased fragmentation charge is essential for its fragmentation behaviour. In this study, a double cased controlled fragmentation charge with a smooth outer casing and an internal grooved inner casing is considered. In particular, the influence on friction between the inner and outer casing on the fragmentation behaviour is studied using numerical simulations and experiments. In the numerical simulations, the friction coefficient in the contact between the inner and outer casings is varied. Experiments on charges with different interface treatments between the casings are performed with various diagnostic tools in order to capture the deformation, fragmentation and acceleration of the casings. Three different interface treatments that give rise to different friction coefficients are tested; a shrink-fit joint, a thin layer of lubricant grease between the casings and a Teflon layer on the outside of the inner casing. It is found that the amount of friction between the casings influences both the deformation before fragmentation and the resulting shape of the fragment from the outer casing. For the highfriction conditions, one large and several small fragments are produced for each diamond on the inner casing. The low-friction condition results in long zigzag-shaped stripes of materials originating from the casing material closest to the grooves and many small fragments from the casing material between the grooves.

Abstract:
Abstract Planning and execution of the well plug and abandonment(P&A) requires detailed knowledge of the downhole barrier's integrity status and position of its downhole completion elements.[Maxim Volkov] This input is utilized for the determination of zones for permanent plugs, casing cuts and retrieval procedures. The last one can be significantly optimized if conducted across the zones with minimal total wall thickness. Cutting the casing across casing collars, fins or casing decentralization may extend the operation requiring more time and resources to achieve success. However, the detailed completion information is not always available due to several well handover. This may result in casing cut performed blindly, based on the position of the first casing collars revealed by caliper or ultrasound surveys. This may result in an increase of the RIG operation timing from few hours to few days. The paper shows results of downhole scanning during three subsea wells P&A campaign at the stage of environmental plug deployment. This included cutting and pulling out of casing wellhead elements (casing stumps) after milling works, before setting environmental cement plug in seabed zone. Casing wellhead design may include the first 13 3/8" and 20" casing joint welded fins to centralize casings. Typical casing joint with fins (rigid type) is shown in figure 1. The abandonment program included milling of these casings and the cutting through the minimal or nominal wall thicknesses with avoiding fins and collars of the casings. The depth of the cutting window initially was set from the available well diagrams, which were not available in all the wells. Thus, the main role of the scanning was to verify and optimize the casings cut window depth to perform the process with minimal issues. Figure 1 Casing joint with rigid centralizers-fins.

Abstract:
The effects of casing shape on the performance and the interaction between the impeller and casing in a small-size turbo-compressor are investigated. Numerical analysis is conducted for the compressor with circular and single volute casings from inlet to discharge nozzle. In order to predict the flow pattern inside the entire impeller, vaneless diffuer and casing, calculations with multiple frames of reference method between the rotating and stationery parts of the domain are carried out. For compressible turbulent flow fields, the continuity and three-dimensional time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are employed. To evaluate the performance of two types of casings, the static pressure and loss coefficients are obtained with various flow rates. Also, static pressure distributions around casings are studied for different casing shapes, which are very important to predict the distribution of radial load. To prove the accuracy of numerical results, measurements of static pressure around casing and pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the compressor are performed for the circular casing. Comparison of these results between the experimental and numerical analyses are conducted, and reasonable agreement is obtained.

Abstract:
Structural parts, such as casings, have a significant share of the overall turbo-machinery mass of modern aero-engines. Therefore preliminary design studies must aim to include the effect of such structures. For this paper compressor casings of commercial aero-engines have been investigated in terms of their design philosophy. It is shown that compressor casings have very similar designs from the preliminary design perspective, even though they appear as very complex structures in reality. The study identified design similarities from which generalized and simplified casing structures have been derived. The casing is divided into geometrically similar basic structures. Such generalized parts are each individually characterized by features. Through simplified physical design algorithms the features are then dimensioned based on blade containment conditions, pressures and temperatures. Finally a generalized form of compressor casing design is derived from the assembly of the individual parts. The derived preliminary design method of casings is no longer dependent on a known representative casing thickness. When increasing compressor characteristics such as blade numbers, diameters or revolution speed the casing design responds directly while still maintaining a characteristic shaping philosophy. Thus a scaling method based on physics rather than only geometrical identity is achieved. The method was integrated into an existing high pressure compressor preliminary design tool. The examination of the developed methodology is carried out against existing compressor designs. Results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:
Axial ribs have been added to gas turbine stationary casings to reduce casing ovalization and allow tighter blade tip clearances to be maintained. Test experience showing blade rub patterns on stator casings due to casing ovalization is presented. Classical solution techniques are presented which demonstrate trends and the relative roundness and attenuation benefits of adding the axial ribs which increase the order of the casing response. The results of finite element studies using 2D solid modeling techniques are compared to the classical solutions. Examples of applications on industrial gas turbine hardware are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract More wells are being completed with fiberglass casings to overcome the challenge of corrosion of the carbon steel casings. Fiberglass casing is expected to increase the longevity of the wells. The wells completed with fiberglass still require the operators to confirm that the casing is in good condition and also the annular cement sheath is able to provide mechanical support and zonal isolation. The evaluation poses a challenge as the properties of the fiberglass casing are very different from those of the carbon steel casing. Studies were performed in 2018 to test the ultrasonic physics in fiberglass, and this paper describes the challenges and how we developed an innovative data acquisition, processing, and interpretation workflow to properly evaluate both the fiberglass casing condition and the annular cement condition. It was observed through surface experiments that the conventional ultrasonic technique applicable to carbon steel casing is not valid for fiberglass casing because the velocity and acoustic impedance of fiberglass are much lower than they are for steel; therefore, there is no resonance in fiberglass. A new interpretation workflow was developed and applied to raw data to build specific parameters for the fiberglass samples to determine the acoustic properties: acoustic impedance, attenuation factor, and velocity. It is for the first time that data have been acquired in a very large fiberglass casing. Fiberglass casings were run in a water well, and wireline acoustic logs were successfully acquired for cement and corrosion evaluation across 18-in. and 10-in. fiberglass casings. The interpretation workflow was applied to raw field data, and a comprehensive cement map and corrosion answer products were obtained with an acceptable quality control level. The paper will review the data from three wells. This innovative data acquisition, processing, and interpretation workflow can be deployed in wells for decision making prior to completion and production. The new method also opens up future opportunities for the evaluation of noncarbon steel casings, and, with knowledge of mechanical and acoustic properties, the method can be adapted to perform a full evaluation. This method is expected to provide valuable information for wells planned to be completed with fiberglass casing.

Bruce. L52282 State-of-the-Art Assessment of Alternative Casing Repair Methods. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), July 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010195.

Abstract:
Many natural gas storage wells suffer damage during normal storage operations. Storage operators spend upwards of $100 million per year recovering lost deliverability. Damage to casings in gas storage wells is largely the result of localized loss of metal from corrosion; however, other types of damage do occur. Individual corrosion pits can be found either on the inside or outside of the casing wall. Repair methods that are currently used for natural gas storage well casings include patches, plugs, liners, etc. While currently-used repair methods can be a cost-effective means of repairing damaged casings as compared to the cost of running an entirely new casing, there is a need to identify and develop alternative casing repair methods that are more economical and/or do not have inherent operational disadvantages. Many of the current repair methods are proprietary, and as a result, are relatively costly to perform. In addition, many of these repair methods (e.g., tube and packer system repairs) result in a decreased cross-sectional area, which creates operational limitations due to flow restrictions and reduces the ability to perform well logging operations. The objective of this project was to review current state-of-the-art casing repair technologies to identify more cost effective alternatives. The most prominent form of underground U.S. gas storage is depleted reservoirs. American Petroleum Institute specification 5CT contains the industry standard design guidance for new casings; however, there are no industry standard repair procedures and each state has their own. The most common state required repair integrity test is pressure testing. Casings must withstand tensile, burst, and collapse loads. Most state repair procedures do not specify a target mechanical property that defines repair success. It is therefore easy to assume that a repair should return a casing back to its original integrity level; however, it may not be necessary. The major types of damage mechanisms are corrosion, threaded connection separation, sealant leaks, split casings, and drill bit damage. While a literature search indicated that the most commonly used types of cost effective repair processes are squeezes, liners, and plating, industry feedback indicated that liner repair is the most commonly used repair process. Adhesively bonded, helically-wound, steel strip repair and magnetic pulse welding are the most promising alternative repair technologies identified, mainly because both are applicable for a broad range of damage types and as an alternative to both traditional casing liner and expandable tubular repair technologies.

Abstract:
Corrosion protection of pipelines inside casings recently has received increasing attention. Although, historically, the safety record of operating pipelines within casings has been excellent, recent experience of the pipeline industry has suggested that potential problems may exist and improved or new field techniques for monitoring the effectiveness of corrosion control practices need to be developed specifically for the pipeline within casings. Furthermore, the mechanism or the root cause of corrosion of pipelines inside casings needs to be better understood. The objectives of the research have been to develop a reliable field technique, based upon the AC-impedance technique, to determine whether or not a carrier pipe is electrically (metallically) shorted to a casing pipe, and to develop a prototype instrument for field use. During 1987, Task 1 "Development of a Field Technique to Determine Electrical Shorts" was performed. Major subtasks performed in Task 1 were a review of the currently available field techniques for electrical short detection

Abstract:
Alternative repair methods for natural gas storage well casings are required to lower the costs of casing repairs and to reduce operational constraints that result from repair methods that reduce the cross sectional area of the casing. The objective of this project is to determine the feasibility of expansion mode magnetic pulse welding (MPW) to affect improved casing repair. Finite element modeling (FEM) was used to develop an expansion welding coil system and to simulate its performance. The critical welding velocity was determined and preliminary MPW parameters identified, thus validating the theoretical feasibility of expansion MPW of steel. One coil system was designed; two coil systems were fabricated and experimentally evaluated. Welding trials indicated that the current coil design is not able to produce sufficient kinetic energy at the interface to produce a weld. Based on the performance of this coil design, three additional coil designs have been identified for future welding trials.

Abstract:
Microtunneling is an underground method of constructing pipelines using a sophisticated, remotely controlled, laser guided, steerable boring machine to install a pipe or casing using pipe jacking techniques. The line can either be installed directly by microtunneling or it can be installed inside a casing that is installed using microtunneling methods. This report discusses the following key topics relative to the design of a pipeline to be installed using microtunneling methods: Microtunneling methods and equipment. Case histories of similar pipelines installed using microtunneling methods. Project planning considerations. Geotechnical investigation and laboratory testing recommendations. Microtunneling design considerations. Design criteria for casings and jacking pipes. Shaft design considerations for jacking and receiving pits. Contract documents and contracting approaches. Guidelines for developing preliminary construction cost estimates. Recommendations for construction monitoring. This report contains comprehensive design guidelines in sufficient detail to address the design considerations typically involved with a routine microtunneling project. Use of these guidelines will result in the most cost effective microtunneling design and minimize costs and risks to your microtunneling project. The numerous references cited should be consulted for additional information when needed.
