Abstract:
Cashman, Harrison and Scheiler (2014) stated that companies with less political risk will use more debts than other organisations in other countries with more exposure to political risk. In particular, when there are low political risks, there will be more leverage and when there is high political uncertainty, there will be low debts indicating a negative relationship between financial leverage and political risk (Cashman, 2015). To this effect, this study will investigate the link between capital structure and political risk in an emerging market such as Mauritius. The data sample includes 30 financial and non- financial companies listed on the Stock exchange of Mauritius over a time frame ranging from 2011 to 2015 with a total number of 135 observations. The political risk was based on two World Bank indicators, namely political change index and corruption perceptions index. Based on a panel regression model, the empirical results show an insignificant relationship between financial leverage and political risk. In particular, it is implied that there is little evidence on the importance of political risk on firms’ decision in Mauritius due to the fact that Mauritian companies consider other types of risks to be more relevant when taking on more debts. The study adds to the existing literature on emerging markets and highlights the specificity of the Mauritian equity market relative to other developed markets.

Zinc (Zn) is reported to influence the coat and skin condition of many animals including the dog (Van Dem Broek and Thoday, 1986). Recent studies indicate that in addition to the zinc concentration, the form in which dietary zinc is supplied influences the animal's zinc status (Power, Cashman and Flynn 1994) and coat (Lowe, Wiseman and Cole, 1994). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of dietary zinc supply on the dimensions, weight, and zinc content of hair as these criteria are considered indicative of coat condition.

Gaffar, Ashraf. "Studies on pattern dissemination and reuse to support interaction design /cAshraf Gaffar." Thesis, 2005. http://spectrum.library.concordia.ca/8606/1/NR09967.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The success of interactive software systems can be attributed to many technical and human factors working in harmony. Designing a new interactive system is a complex undertaking that must carefully consider this 'harmony'. Because this harmony is hard to predict before a system is actually put to work, extensive design experience and collaboration are crucial. For additional support, interaction design patterns have been proposed as a means to discover, encapsulate, and disseminate user interface design knowledge and best practices, hence improving the chances of success of new interactive systems. Despite the obvious and acclaimed potential to support the design process, and the rich variety of pattern collections we have today, the reuse of HCI patterns has not achieved the acceptance and widespread applicability foreseen by pattern advocates. It has been recently identified in the research community that patterns are greatly underused by mainstream interface designers. Within the scope of this thesis, we conducted an empirical study and a survey to gain better understanding of the problem of pattern underutilization. Accordingly, we point out and demonstrate the lack of suitable representation as a major cause. This thesis explores two different avenues in solving the problem: On designer's side, we demonstrate the potential of patterns in enhancing user interface design in two investigations. (i) We explore the important but often neglected interaction between interfaces and the underlying system. We provide several examples and show how patterns can support this interaction for better interfaces design. (ii) We look at current approaches of user interface design processes and the commonly used models. Then we show potential improvements attainable through informed application of patterns. In the second avenue, we conclude that a new pattern representation can help improve HCI pattern dissemination and reuse. We provide a model for the current pattern lifecycle and propose an additional layer to it, and a new pattern representation model. A dissemination method is provided to collect and organize all relevant activities and models within a comprehensive and structured approach. This addition is supplemented with the needed infrastructure in terms of supporting software as well as human activities.

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation into the historical evolution of Ajegunle Raga, a reggae form developed within an urban ghetto in Lagos called Ajegunle and the construction and negotiation of identities therein. The research further argues that Ajegunle Raga is a home-grown oppositional music subculture that draws inspiration from diasporic musical subcultures like Reggae and Hip Hop but retains a genuine representation of Ajegunle in its tales of survival, poverty, marginalization and expressions of creativity within the ambience of the music.

Abstract:
Peter Cashman reviews the current state of play in Australia regarding the imposition of civil liability on multinationals for human rights abuses and environmental damage occurring overseas. He considers cases based on a direct tort law-based duty of care and the relevance in that regard of developments in English law and also environmental damage associated with the operations of Australian multinationals, in particular the historic OK Tedi litigation against BHP Billiton and the recent class action trial of the claim by Indonesian seaweed farmers arising from the Montara oil spill. Important aspects of the law on jurisdiction, forum non conveniens, and choice of law and the opt-out class action regime in federal and State courts are outlined. The rules relating to the running of cases by private law firms and third party litigation funders on the basis of contingency fee agreements are explained

Abstract:
Bill Gates stated in a speech, “In all areas of the curriculum, teachers must teach an information-based inquiry process to meet the demands of the Information Age. This is the challenge for the world’s most important profession. Meeting this challenge will be impossible unless educators are willing to join the revolution and embrace the new technology tools available.”…. Every educator looks at the integration of technology—and its challenges — from a different perspective. Technology coordinators view the problems of insufficient hardware, software, and training as major obstacles. Teachers consider the lack of time to develop technology-based lesson a concern. Administrators identify teachers’ lack of experience using technology in instruction as yet another challenge. Teachers and administrators, however, can and are beginning to overcome these barriers with effective leadership, proper training, planning, and a commitment to enhancing teaching and learning using technologies. Abstract:
Is it still possible to draw up a state of arts about collaborative technologies? For 20 years now, reflections on these technologies have become the subject of ascientific discipline in its own right: computer supported cooperative work (CSCW). Since this term was fashioned in 1984 by Irene Greif and Paul M. Cashman, research scientists of extremely diverse disciplinary origins (i.e., ergonomics, psychology, linguistics, sociology, etc.) have invested in research which has been presented in a large number of conferences (the main one being the biannual “CSCW” conference which spawned a “sister” conference in Europe called “ECSCW”), in a specialist magazine (CSCW), in dozens of books, and hundreds of articles. CSCW covers a wide range of works whose state of arts begins to be a bit difficult to draw. In spite of all those works, uses of collaborative technologies continue to be a major issue in developing electronic human resource management (e-HRM). In fact, developing cooperation among employees is often an objective of e-HRM, but, as in other domains of firms, those technologies are generally under-used in comparison with what is waiting before their implementation. In this article, we develop the idea that a better understanding of how we can precisely define “uses” and how they appear—or not—is necessary to understand this phenomenon of under-use. In the first part of this article, we will precise the main dimensions of the collaborative technologies field. In a second part, we will present the most recent development of this reflection, which can be considered as one major basis for future works in this discipline.

Abstract:
This chapter highlights British composer Philip Cashian’s The Sun’s Great Eye (2008). In this short but arresting work, Cashian manages, with an impressive display of sleight-of-hand craftsmanship, to assimilate some of the more obvious characteristics of fashionable minimalism within a scheme that combines repeated patterns with asymmetrical rhythmic contours. The result, ingenious and highly concentrated, is not in the least mechanical, but has charm and a natural musicality. The fascinating piano part is written on just one stave, to be shared by both hands. This emphasizes the close interweaving of both protagonists as equal partners, and adds subtly to the feeling of intimacy and unforced expression. Through elliptical rhythmic hurdles and differing alignments, the voice glides in and out, in supple, lilting fragments which must seem effortless, bearing no hint of the hard work needed to acquire perfect coordination and accurate pitching, or the necessity of counting beats in groups of two and three.
