Hopper, Louise. "Factors affecting research in primary dental care (pulpotomy study as a primary case research case study)." Thesis, University of Manchester, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.502270.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a rekindling of interest in primary dental care research. However, there has been little investigation of the factors affecting these studies. This thesis examines primary dental care research pragmatically and from the dentists perspective. The Pulpotomy Study was undertaken In the northwest of England as a preliminary, prospective, pragmatic, longitudinal, multi-centred, cohort study in primary dental care. Forty primary care dentists undertook 334 pulpotomies In 316 participants on symptomatic primary molar teeth using Caustinerf Deciduous and/or Creosote BP. Pulpotomies were successful at reducing pain and sepsis. Over five years 77.3% of pulpotomies were successful. Pulpotomies were considered a suitable method of managing the child with pain and sepsis.

Abstract:
Case studies are widely used across a lot of different subject areas, however there are a lot of questions about the use of it because of the doubt in its’ contribution to science and the quality of it. The purpose with this research paper is to define the case study and the characteristics required in it for it to be classified and recognized as a “good” case study. Findings reveal that case study is defined in many different ways depending on the area of subject it is presented in. A good case study is reliable, valid and is used as a qualitative research method and it contains a lot of depth in the investigated single case.

Abstract:
Agile methods have been widely implemented in the industry while teaching these methods is a substantial part of Computer Science and Engineering program curricula. Evidencedriven data of agile practices, methods, and tools have been extracted based on empirical studies with students, however, there is an important need for more anecdotal evidence to confirm these findings. In order to fill this gap, this paper explores the perceptions and the applicability of the Scrum Framework in a student research team in an industrial context. Empirical data have been gathered through interviews with the case study participants combined with a survey. The analysis reveals that student experiences are mainly positive and that they can easily grasp the benefits of Scrum Framework. The challenges of implementing Scrum in such a setting mainly concern the balance between coach and self-organization, formulating accurate user stories when researching, finding the most suitable estimation method, as well as planning when conducting research. The empirical findings may potentially be extrapolated in student scrum teams or even in industrial settings. Finally, this research paper should encourage other researchers to investigate the adoption of Scrum in a student setting.

Abstract:
The following satírical case study of a government supportcd program of research was conceived during a concert by a weil-known pianist. In the region in which the concert was being given, there was no hall suitable for a concert of such quality. The performance was given in a large athletic arena, despite the accoustical characteristics of such a facility. As the author tried to ignore the sounds and listen to the music, he reflected on other incongruities. Eventually ghosts of past research supported by public funds began to haunt hirn. The fictitious story that follows is partly a summation of those disharmonic thoutghts, and is considered in terms of devclopment of public policy for research support by gobernmental agencies in a democracy. lt is the responsibility of researchers and scholars in a democracy to educate the public about the need to support high quality research activitíes. When this responsibility is not met, political issues can become more ímportant in determining research priorities than comrnon sense or scientific neccssity.

Aliprandi-Costa, Bernadette. "Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) ‒ A Case Study." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18175.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The Australian healthcare system is complex. Assessing the quality of the care provided in the management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is problematic because of disparate systems that constrain an integrated reporting approach. Registry data reported within a comparative effectiveness research (CER) framework establishes the case for clinical process indicators to measure and report hospital performance. Objectives: To aggregate data from The Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) and the Cooperative National Registry of Acute Coronary Care Guideline Adherence and Clinical Events (CONCORDANCE) to describe temporal trends in the management of ACS and associations with in-hospital events, hospital readmission and six month mortality; to develop a composite score of hospital performance quality; to determine associations between adherence to the quality composite score and in-hospital events, hospital readmission and six month mortality and develop a benchmarked stakeholder hospital performance report. Methods: A single case study embedding three units of analysis was used to explore and explain how data reported in a CER framework measures hospital performance in the management of ACS. Analysis: Descriptive analyses of prospectively collected data on the management and outcomes of over 7000 patients admitted to 46 hospitals from 1999 to 2016. Findings: The first Unit of Analysis reports temporal trends in the management of ACS across 11 hospitals in the GRACE registry from 2000 to 2007 which informed the design of the CONCORDANCE registry; The second Unit of Analysis combines both GRACE and CONCORDANCE registries and reports on the management of ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI ) from 1999 to 2016 revealing gains in pre-hospital care and fewer in-hospital clinical events, and readmission for urgent revascularisation without a significant reduction in in-hospital or six month mortality. The third Unit of Analysis reports the observed and risk-adjusted association between adherence to the quality composite score and reduced in-hospital events, and increased survival at hospital discharge and at six months post discharge. Conclusion: Case-study analysis of CER in the context of ACS registries provides evidence on adherence to evidence-based care and a quality composite measure of hospital performance in the management of ACS.

Full text
Abstract:
Leadership development in higher education is of vital importance to South Africa’s future. We present a case study that focuses on a leadership development programme (LDP) through action learning and action research (ALAR) for women academics in South Africa during 2000 and 2001. It identifies the effects of the LDP on participants five years after the programme. The evaluation process encouraged participants to reflect on their own learning, research growth and leadership capabilities, and on how they may further develop their practice and career. Reflecting on this evaluation, we have conceptualized the results and developed process models of leadership deve lopment through action research. These models may be used as a framework for designing, conducting and evaluating leadership or other professional development programmes in higher education.

Full text
Abstract:
Countries around the world, both developed and emerging, agree that financial literacy education (FLE) is of critical importance, with current economic times having led to an opportune moment for financial education. The 2008 global financial crisis (GFC), increasingly complex financial markets, and widespread growth of alternative or predatory financial services are all valid reasons for FLE. At present FLE is considered an essential 21st century life skill for individuals to acquire. Opportunities to teach individuals how to make simple financial decisions about money management and exposure to financial dilemmas an individual might face are some of the approaches used. Ensuring that individuals manage their personal finances effectively so that they have adequate funds to enable a comfortable retirement tends to be the dominating push of FLE. Indeed, this conventional FLE approach is often packaged as easy to acquire skills and knowledge that individuals are expected to follow to effectively manage their finances. The conventional approach also operates from a deficit perspective where assumptions are made about what an individual can or cannot do based on their financial circumstances. Moreover, the social structures that exist to ensure that both poverty and extreme wealth co-exist are not exposed. Therefore, caution should be taken when viewing education as the sole solution to the world’s economic problems as there are other factors to consider such as socio-economic status (SES), gender, culture and behaviour.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation reports on a case study investigation of the organisational setting of the Kaohsiung Harbour Bureau (KHB) in Taiwan. It reports on my methodological contribution in doing my study in a particular way, namely, by making use of my position in the Harbour to help develop multi-views in relation to the future. I tried not to abuse my working position as a former manager of warehousing and my current position as a researcher to make definite recommendations for action~ but I wanted to create some options for thinking about future plans for privatisation of port activities through involving less power distance than is normally associated with planning in the Harbour. My study was not carried out by trying to operate in a neutral fashion. For instance, I clearly had an own involvement in raising questions in the interviews (individual and group) with participants and in the way I developed further questions during interviews and also carried information across interviews. I also tried to create some discussion on important issues that created high emotional responses for participants. I call my case study research, which was organised to be active in the hope to be of some benefit to participants, a special kind of case study. I reflect on the roles I played in the special case study in the dissertation. The dissertation also reports on the theoretical contribution that I think I have made in relation to some themes arising from the case study (cross-cultural learning, politics and development, and the relevance of systems thinking). It gives details on how these themes could be explored with reference to the case. I discuss the themes in relation to wider literature on the topics and I add my ideas.

Abstract:
This paper aims at exploring and discussing the possibilities of applying qualitative content analysis as a (text) interpretation method in case study research. First, case study research as a research strategy within qualitative social research is briefly presented. Then, a basic introduction to (qualitative) content analysis as an interpretation method for qualitative interviews and other data material is given. Finally the use of qualitative content analysis for developing case studies is examined and evaluated. The author argues in favor of both case study research as a research strategy and qualitative content analysis as a method of examination of data material and seeks to encourage the integration of qualitative content analysis into the data analysis in case study research.

Mbelani, Madeyandile. "Making visual literacy meaningful in a rural context: an action research case study." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003551.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports on a collaborative action research case study into the teaching of visual literacy to Grade 10 learners in a rural high school in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Visual literacy is one of the critical aspects that have been incorporated in the teaching of English First Additional Language as required by the National Curriculum Statement (Grade 10-12), which has been implemented in Grade 10 as from 2006. With the aim of improving learners’ performance in visual literacy I designed a visual literacy unit that consisted of lesson plans running over 7 periods in 10 school days. In implementing the unit the learners were first grouped and then exposed to visual grammar and visual texts and then they critically viewed such texts and designed their own. Data was collected daily in the form of individual learner journals, researcher’s journal/diary, and copies were kept of activities done by learners (individually or in groups). Also, two teachers were invited as non-participant observers to each visit a lesson. Learner focus groups were conducted and critical friends were interviewed, tape recorded and transcribed. A camera was used to take still photographs to show learner activities in groups and during group presentations. The data revealed that visual literacy could be taught meaningfully in a rural high school as the learners could identify, cut, paste and discuss elements of visual language and they finally designed their own advertisements in groups. In the analysis of data the following factors emerged as hindrances for successful teaching of visual literacy in a rural high school: lack of resources; learners’ lack of a foundation in visual literacy from Grades 7-9; and problems revolving around time management and pacing. As action research comes in spirals, this research represented the first one and the researcher found the study an eye opener and a foundation to build on in the second spiral (that is not part of this research).

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the idea of research having organisational characteristics which are affected by the institutional culture but can not be defined as a subculture of the institutional culture. In particular, it examines how research culture(s) can be exclusionary and reproduce discriminatory practices. Using quantitative data in the form of Rhodes University Annual Reports and interviews conducted with 11 participants, the thesis documents the current research practices of the Faculty of Humanities at Rhodes University. Such practices incorporate multiple dimensions, including how research is done, who does research, what research is done and research funding rituals. The purpose of this study is to reveal how research cultures are constructed through the seemingly mundane and everyday research practices within a research community. Through the analysis of these everyday practices, participants’ experiences and theoretical arguments, this thesis found that research culture and institutional culture are separate entities, and that research culture plays a vital role in the formation of research practices.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced user experience (UX) designers to make their research comply with social distant roles, because of this many have turned to using computer mediated communication (CMC) tools. Even though research has shown that interviewing in person is marginally superior to video call interviews, user experience research is often conducted using more than one method. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate how user experience professionals are using video call as the main communication method for their user centered data gathering. Eleven UX professionals from one company were interviewed about ten different projects, focusing on the project execution and the methods used. The results show different ways of using video calls to interview, workaround methods to replace in person observation and, drawbacks and benefits from using CMC tools to gather data. Indicating that some projects are better suited to the use of video calls then others and suggest possible benefits from using both CMC tools and well as in person methods to gather data.

"Energy management in industry : a case study on the brewing industry." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/21960.

Full text
Abstract:
The industrial sector is the main energy user in South Africa, using about half the national total, and compared to most other industrialised countries South Africa has a high in_dustrial energy intensity, thus necessitating improved industrial energy management. The malt brewing industry was chosen as a case study industry to illustrate the potential for improved energy management in industry. Ohlsson's brewery in Cape Town was analysed in detail and energy management improvements identified for that brewery were ·expanded to include the malt brewing industry in general, by comparing Ohlsson's brewery to other breweries in South Africa. It was found that energy requirements at Ohlsson's Brewery could be reduced by 12-20%, by the implementation of economically feasible energy management schemes. However, mainly because of discrepancies in coal prices between Ohlsson's Brewery and most other breweries in South Africa, energy requirements for the brewing industry in general can be reduced by 7-13%. This translates to be a monetary saving of R242 000-R486 000/month, which is evenly spread between coal, electricity, and maximum demand savings. No single large energy saving scheme was identified, but the potential. savings are due to a number of schemes. The potential energy savings identified in this study exclude the savings as a result of the implementation of process sensitive schemes, which were considered beyond the scope of this study. Nevertheless some process sensitive schemes, associated with boiling in the brewhouse, could result in substantial savings. The energy usage target identified for South African breweries is higher than current energy requiiements for breweries in the Britain and Germany when climatic and operational constraints are taken into account. This is because Britain and Germany have higher energy costs relative to production costs, government incentive schemes for reducing energy usage, and more stringent environmental legislation often necessitating the recovery of brewhouse vapours.

Abstract:
Limited research has been conducted concerning the actual practice of health education in Victorian schools. This study investigates the health education curriculum at a large primary school in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The investigation involves a critical analysis of current practices in health education in the upper school through the development of a ‘small’ action research group. Data were gathered through document collection, questionnaires, interviews, discussions, diary and reflective journal entries. The action research group, consisting of the teacher-researcher and upper school teachers, developed, implemented and reflected upon units of work piloted with upper school students. Alternative approaches to health education were explored. The aim was to accommodate critically informed discourse amongst colleagues to promote self-reflective enquiry and facilitate improvements to existing pedagogic practices. During the course of the investigation, factors limiting and facilitating action research and curriculum change in health education, became evident. These included personal, practical, curriculum and organisational constraints operating externally and internally on the school and classroom environments. Despite these constraints, it was demonstrated in this study, that action research can contribute to the improvement of pedagogic practices in health education. Small ‘authentic’ action research projects may provide alternative internal professional development structures for teachers and consequently improve learning opportunities for students.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND:Translational medicine is attracting much attention worldwide and many translational research organizations (TROs) have been established. In China, translational medicine has developed rapidly, but faces many challenges. This study was aimed at exploring these challenges faced by emerging TROs in China.METHOD:A qualitative, multiple case study approach was used to assess the challenges faced by TROs in China. Data were collected between May and August 2012.RESULTS:Eight cases were identified. Overall, four themes that characterized TROs in China emerged from analyses: 1. objectives, organizer, and funding resources, 2. participating partners and research teams, 3. management, and 4. achievements. All TROs had objectives related to translating basic discovery to clinic treatment and cultivating translational researchers. In terms of organizer and funding resources, 7 out of 8 TROs were launched only by universities and/or hospitals, and funded mostly through research grants. As for participating partners and multidisciplinary research teams, all but one of the TROs only involved biomedical research institutions who were interested in translational research, and characterized as clinical research centers
7 out of 8 TROs involved only researchers from biomedicine and clinical disciplines and none involved disciplines related to education, ethnicity, and sociology, or engaged the community. Current management of the TROs were generally nested within the traditional research management paradigms, and failed to adapt to the tenets of translational research. Half of the TROs were at developmental stages defined as infrastructure construction and recruitment of translational researchers.CONCLUSIONS:TROs in China face the challenge of attracting sustainable funding sources, widening multidisciplinary cooperation, cultivating multi-disciplinary translational researchers and adapting current research management to translational research. Greater emphasis should be placed on increasing multidisciplinary cooperation, and innovating in education programs to cultivate of translational researchers. Efforts should be made to reform research management in TROs, and establish sustainable funding resources.

Abstract:

This study examined the process of team creativity in the workplace as it relates to experiential, cognitive, and social factors, including organizational and cultural structures, team social dynamics, and effects on individuals. Its purpose was to understand the quality of real-time social interactions and dynamics underlying the creative process in teams. The researcher employed a case study methodology, using observation and individual and focus group interviews of a highly creative team within an organization in a creative industry. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method.

The study had seven major findings: (1) the team actively integrated elements of play during initial interactions; (2) the setting provided a “play” environment that encouraged team members to view things from different perspectives; (3) the play mood that was initiated in early meetings accelerated team bonding and trust and consequently facilitated the emergence of creativity in subsequent meetings; (4) through the active integration of available resources and tools over time, team members generated novel ways of interacting with the environment; (5) the introduction of externally induced stress caused an abrupt shift from playful to task-oriented behaviors; (6) the final solution emerged gradually through incremental integration of ideas proposed by individual team members over time; and (7) all team members took part in developing elements of the final work product based on their individual strengths and preferences. Conclusions include the following: (1) the creative process incorporates play as a behavioral orientation; (2) the creative process is enabled by a combination of autonomy and constraint; (3) the creative process combines significant aspects of experiential and social learning expressed through the reciprocal interaction of the environment, personal and cognitive factors, and behavior; and (4) team member alignment around shared values helps facilitate social dynamics and the creative process. This study sheds new insight on the transdisciplinary nature of the creativity phenomenon that integrates creativity, play, adult learning, and general systems theories. Recommendations for practice and research include, but are not limited to, integrating this study’s findings into existing innovative team learning models (e.g., action learning) and developing an inquiry-based design to generating creativity in organizations.

Abstract:
The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey is the major academic research management and funding agency in Turkey. As a policy-maker, the council has undertaken very important responsibility in designing a science and technology policy of Turkey. By means of impact analysis, evaluating the ongoing research support programmes is important for designing more effective ones. However, impact of academic research are widely disseminated, journal articles being published and cited, number of academic staff involved in the supported projects, patents, and prototypes could be used as an evaluation instrument for impact analysis. In this study first time, we have figured out the social benefits (in 2008 TL fixed prices) of academic research projects, specifically physics academic research projects that were supported during 1998-2008 by TÜ

This paper presents methods and software implementation for analyzing a field of research through the use of bibliometrics, i.e., information about published journal articles. Online publication search engines are queried, and their search results are extracted and analyzed, to help inform a researcher of the state of his or her field. Our methodology consists of three components: extraction of terms relevant to the research field, analysis of the growth in prevalence of these terms over time, and identification of interrelationships among these terms using a technique known as Latent Semantic Analysis. These methods are applicable to the analysis of any research field, but this paper presents results from a case study on the field of renewable energy.

Abstract:
With the increase of awareness and focus on university research commercialization, much research had been conducted to investigate this subject. It was revealed that because universities were not traditionally built to serve the purpose of commercialization, many obstacles existed in the path of university research commercialization. Historically, research had largely focused on identifying critical factors that impacted the performance of commercialization. However, it was not clear how those findings could be systematically incorporated into the commercialization improvement plan of individual cases. This research intended to fill this gap and provide a framework that could be used by most universities to access and improve their research commercialization process. A case study of a U.S. land-grant university was conducted and a narrative approach was mainly used as the method of data analysis. Under the scope of a single-case study, four sub-studies were conducted to address the goals of this research. First, a framework was developed that incorporated theories of existing research and the value stream map of lean management. Interviews with the intellectual property office and faculty were conducted to determine if the theoretical framework was applicable. It was found that the framework fitted well with the current process of university research commercialization. After that, a survey that covered a sample size of 1110 researchers at the targeted university was conducted to investigate the importance of different resources at different stages of the process. Resources that were under investigation were grouped into four categories: technical, human, social, and financial resources. This research identified the most important resources for research commercialization were industrial connections (social resource) and assistance from the intellectual property (IP) office (human resource), with industrial connections playing a more importance role at the beginning of the process and the IP office from the stage of patent application. To assess organizational characteristics of the targeted university, interviews were conducted with 22 faculty, three representatives from the administration, one representative from the intellectual property office, and one representative from an external organization. Six criteria derived from previous research were used to guide the assessment: (1) expenditures on research and development (RandD), (2) intellectual property policy, (3) research field, (4) key individuals, (5) commitment to innovation, and (6) networking with external relations. It was found that the targeted university had strong evidence of the advantages of expenditures on RandD and research field, however, it was relatively weak in the other four characteristics. The last part of the research involved interviews with two companies for the purpose of developing a best practice for research commercialization with the examples from the industry. Recommendations to improve targeted university's research commercialization were developed based on findings of the research.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this case study is to examine how talent management is applied in a university environment and how development in leadership skills for the participants of a project affects their willingness to stay at the university. This study also highlights the purpose of using a strategy like talent management to keep key people in the organization to stay and also that theories about talent management needs to be complete with theories about loyalty and commitment. This is done through examining the project Real-- Research and Leadership that the University of Umeå provided for 21 researchers and the first round of the project took part between 2015 and 2016. The purpose of this project is to work as a supporting instance for the researcher’s research career in an long term goal to get the young prominent researchers to stay and keep working at the University. To do so, ReaL, as the project is commonly called, offered the researchers a course with the possibility to develop their leadership abilities that would help them in their future research career. But also to introduce them to interdisciplinary contacts in an attempt to broaden their research network and to give them an increased general knowledge sharing. The data gathering for this study was partly done through surveys that were handed out to the participants at the last day of the course and by interviews with selected participants from the course. The quantitative results of the study show that the participants showed a positive feeling against the impact on the participant’s willingness to stay at the University of Umeå and that the support for their research careers and an enhance in their ability in communication and conflict management was highly contributed towards their willingness to stay at the university. ReaL as a support tool for the participants was also a highly contributed factor for their willingness to stay. The Qualitative results on the other hand shows a more complex situation. Even thou that the project had a positive impact, other external factors paid more contribution to the researcher’s willingness to stay then what the quantitative results shows. These factors were the layout of the city of Umeå, their family situation and their partner’s works situation.

Witty, Willis J. "An exploratory case study of African American male nurses on leadership and quality of care." Thesis, University of Phoenix, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3731432.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this qualitative exploratory multiple-case study was to explore the lived experiences and the challenges African American male nurses faced in leadership roles and in providing quality care for minority patients. Participants included 15 African American male registered nurses (RNs) working in executive, administrative, and managerial leadership positions in Florida’s hospitals and other healthcare organizations. The participation criteria included being an African American male RN working in a leadership position in Florida with experiences in leadership and providing quality care for minority patients and at least 5 years of leadership experience. Participants completed in-depth face-to-face, digitally recorded interviews answering open-ended questions. Analysis of the interview data identified emerging themes and patterns using NVivo 10 qualitative data analysis software. Four major themes were identified: (a) specific leadership challenges associated with being an African American male leader, (b) general leadership challenges, (c) patient-level challenges limit the ability to provide quality care for minority patients, and (d) systemic challenges limit the ability to provide quality care for minority patients. Recommendations to healthcare leaders include a work environment free of gender segregation and racial discrimination, organizations adequately funded to deliver quality care, and strong leadership support for nurses and staff. Future studies should include additional geographic locations to increase the generalizability of findings to other populations.

Jong, Cindy. "Linking Teacher Learning to Pupil Learning: A Longitudinal Investigation of How Experiences Shape Teaching Practices in Mathematics." Thesis, Boston College, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/616.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Lillie R. Albert
Mathematics education is constantly at the forefront of public and academic debates during this era of increased accountability. Questions concerning teacher preparation and teaching practices that connect to pupil learning are central to these discussions. However, very few studies have examined relationships among these factors and most are confined to a short time period; thus, this dissertation studies such relationships over a two-year period. Informed by a sociocultural perspective, this study examines how preservice elementary teachers' past K-12 schooling and teacher education experiences influences their attitudes and perceptions about mathematics education over time. It also explores how teaching practices are shaped by these experiences, and are ultimately linked to pupil learning. A mixed-method design of survey and qualitative case-study research methods was employed to collect and analyze data over a two-year period. During the first year of this study, pre- and post-surveys using Likert-scale items were administered to all preservice teachers (n=75) enrolled in an elementary mathematics methods course. For a two-year period, the experiences of two participants were explored through longitudinal interviews, observations, and an examination of artifacts (i.e., teacher lesson plans, assessments, and pupil work) to develop in-depth case studies. Findings indicate that prior schooling experiences influenced teachers' initial attitudes and perceptions about mathematics. Nevertheless, over a short period, positive changes in teachers' attitudes and confidence to teach mathematics suggest that experiences in the mathematics methods course were conducive to building on teachers' prior knowledge. Survey and case-study findings also indicate that preservice teachers planned to teach mathematics with a reformed approach, which emphasizes a conceptual understanding of mathematic. However, it was challenging for case-study participants to implement a reformed approach as first-year teachers, especially if they had limited teaching models to reinforce this method. Findings also suggest that school context, classroom management, and mathematical content knowledge all influence teaching practices and pupil learning opportunities. Implications for teacher education, school reform, and future research are discussed

Al-Rashidi, Hajed. "The role of internal stakeholders and influencing factors during the phases of e-government initiative implementation." Thesis, Brunel University, 2013. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/7265.

Full text
Abstract:
Governments around the globe were actively implementing e-government initiatives in the past two decades. However, the majority of e-government initiatives fail in achieving their objectives before, during or after implementation. This study is addressing the problem, e-government initiatives are still more failure than success. Literature indicates differing models that analyse various stages, stakeholders and factors influencing e-government implementation in the public sector. Yet, these models do not explore in particular the important roles and responsibilities of internal stakeholders and influencing factors during different phases of the implementation cycle of the e-government initiative. There is a need for a framework that guides the e-government initiative implementation internally. To achieve the aim of this research, this study should empirically investigate "managing e-government initiative implementation." Consequently, this thesis results in research that contributes towards successful e-government initiative implementation based on empirical data derived from three case studies. The practical parts of the research are three case studies on e-government initiative implementation, which are analysed using an interpretive and qualitative research approach. Besides document analysis and observation, interview was the main method to collect empirical data for this study. For an accurate result, only managers and above level are selected and interviewed. The study examines the proposed framework in three government organizations in the State of Kuwait by using a qualitative, interpretive, multiple case study research strategy. As a result, this thesis is proposing a framework that can be used to enhance the implementation process of e-government initiative throughout the different phases of the implementation cycle, and contributes to the body of knowledge by extending the literature. The stakeholders, factors and implementation phases are mapped together to ease understanding the implementation process of e-government initiative implementation across the public organizations. The study concludes by identifying internal stakeholders, factors, and providing a holistic framework for e-government initiative implementation. The findings of this research are useful for internal stakeholders in the field, as it enables them to gain a better understanding of their own roles and responsibilities. Moreover, researchers in similar fields may find this work useful as a way to approach the study of e-government initiative implementation.

Abstract:
This study presents a normative framework of the RFID implementation process in the UK public sector. It was motivated by the lack of socio-technical studies on the RFID implementation process in the UK public sector and the need for existing and potential RFID project managers to have an implementation model which could guide their effort in implementing any RFID initiatives in the sector. The study has been conducted through a combination of case study research and grounded theory research approach. Primary data have been collected from the in-depth interviews conducted with the RFID project managers from seven public sector organisations, i.e., five libraries and two hospitals. The analyses of the data were in two main stages. The first stage involved the analysis of the RFID implementation process in each of the organisations and the second stage involved a cross analysis of the RFID implementation process across the entire organisations. Potential contribution towards the existing body of knowledge on RFID implementation was in the form of a normative framework of RFID implementation process in the public sector. This framework describes the main and sub activities in the implementation process, and illustrates the dissimilarities and similarities between the implementation processes. Consequently, the implications of the study to the existing and potential RFID project managers in the public sector and also to the study of information system and RFID implementation are discussed.

This study contributes to understanding the master by research as a policy object, and provides insight into how policy work is done at universities. It utilises Stephen Ball’s theorisation of policy enactment with theories of complexity to explore the tensions that frame aspirations for a new master by research at a large modern university. Findings identified that experiences in, and of, the MPhil are complex and, at times, contradictory and point to a need to better understand policy intentions, decisions, and experiences when creating courses and educational experiences in the future.

Yeh, Chun-Chun. "Research writing in an EFL context : a case study in Taiwan." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/31012.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a qualitative case study of a research writing project at undergraduate level in a Taiwanese university. The general purpose of this thesis is to study the whole process of research writing at undergraduate level, while the more specific focus of the study is to investigate the students' learning experiences in the project and the teacher-student interaction in the learning process, such as in writing conferences and the revision stage. The study involved one American instructor and seven Chinese students majoring in English. It traced a research writing project, carried out as part of the writing curriculum, from start to finish. The project was examined from both the instructor's and the students' perspectives. Data for the study come from interviews, student writing drafts, and teacher-student conference transcripts. The findings indicate that the research writing project was perceived by both the students and the instructor as an integrated part of the composition curriculum. Investigations of writing conferences show that organization, documentation, and the mechanics of student papers were some of the focuses of the conferences. A detailed analysis of two students' multiple drafts suggests that writing conferences had a strong impact on the students' revision of their papers. Also emerging from this study is the cultural confrontation between the American instructor and the Chinese students. The impact of this on the acquisition of research writing is explored. It is found that both the instructor and the students attributed certain writing problems to the influence of culture. A preliminary model of the research writing process is proposed based on the findings of the study. It shows the interaction between the research writing project and variables such as the teacher, the textbook, external factors, academic culture and students' indigenous culture. Practical implications and directions for further research are also discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to assess the value of Dimpomar, a privately owned company. In order to reach reasonable results and perform the valuation, the theoretical background was first presented regarding the several valuation methods, followed by a company presentation, industry analysis and the analysis of the financial indicators and situation of the company. The valuation methods used in order to reach the enterprise value, firm value, equity value and price per share value were the Discounted Cash Flow and the Relative Valuation (Multiples). The fact that these two methods were applied, allowed the comparison of Dimpomar with the peer group, having more arguments to justify the obtained value of Dimpomar, which was an enterprise value of 13,784,962€ and a price target of 177.4€. To conclude, this work provides a solid base of analysis for a possible exit through an IPO (initial public offer).

According to the statistical study conducted by Financial Supervisory Commission in 2016, Taiwan insurance density reached TWD $133,109 which currently ranked number ten globally. Moreover, Insurance penetration in Taiwan is now as high as 18.31%, ranking number two globally and number one in Asia respectively. Based on The Life Insurance Association of R.O.C, the total insurance revenue is at TWD $2.5 trillion, demonstrating the important role Insurance plays in wealth management in Taiwan. In an era where declining birth rate, aging population, and volatile financial market are common, most people deem insurance as a low risk and stable protection for them and their family. However, for young beneficiaries who are not yet capable of managing claimed compensation, issues such as deception and scams can be serious social and legal problems. This research paper will discuss how to incorporate Insurance Trust into insurance plan in order to maximize the beneficiaries' benefits. It also summarizes different customized models for various types of family structure and specific needs. Through primary case studies and secondary research, this report will analyze the topic of insurance planning, ranging from life insurance, health insurance, cancer insurance, long-term insurance, to savings insurance and investment oriented insurance. Through four primary real-life case studies, this research will present customized insurance plans and trust proposals that aim to balance achieving financial goals and securing life. Notably, the proposals are designed based on different family conditions, after-incident impacts, and insurers' expectations. When considering life as a three-stage process, this research shows that there are four main areas of risks. One should review her own situation, adjusts risk planning and select the most suitable plan accordingly at different times. The phenomena of high insurance fee and low premium show that Taiwanese insurers prefer health insurance or capital preservation investment insurance, and adoption rate for insurance trust has been relatively low, due to its nascency in the market. As the insurance industry in Taiwan continues to mature, we argue that insurance planning will be even more comprehensive if traditional insurance products and insurance trust can be combined together, thereby maximizing the expected benefits and life-long protection. From our research, we propose the following recommendations: (1) Every insurer should incorporate insurance trust into insurance planning (2) Insurance sales agents should deepen their knowledge and develop expertise in insurance trust (3) Discuss and resolve conflicts between insurance law and trust law.

With an increase of economic volatility, many experts proposed many ways for analysis and solutions to business problems. Some researches focus the strategies outside the company, such as Porter’s competitive strategy of 5 forces. Recently, some researchers began to emphasize the strength of the resources inside the enterprise. It seems that all of the problems of an enterprise could be overcome and led to success by dominant strategies. This research reviews some literature related to strategies and studies the case of a Positive Polymer Temperature Component (PPTC)division. The results suggest that the company should select “Product Expansion Strategy” and “Geographic Expanding Strategy” to increase the marketing ability and the image of the company’s brand.
