Abstract:
This study was inspired by two of the leading papers in the case study method: Eisenhardt (1991) and Dyer and Wilkins (1991). The work of those authors could be considered a benchmark for research based on a case study. Additionally, this research comes as a complement to re-categorize case study research design. After reviewing those papers, the authors identified certain misunderstandings relative to when a case study should be addressed as single or multiple case studies. This study reviewed both recent and ancient research papers that used the case study research design in their investigations based on this misunderstanding. Thus, the previously identified misinterpretation of case study categorization is the gap this study filled. For this study, the case study research design was to be re-categorized to understand which case study design suits which research study. Accordingly, based on the identified gap, the study used secondary data to re-categorize the case study research design through a literature review method. As a result, the study identified three case study categories: single setting case study with single sub-case, single setting case study with multiple sub-cases, and multiple case studies. Consequently, the result re-categorizes single case study design into single sub-case and multiple sub-cases. This study makes recommendations through the proposed approach that filled the gap identified in the case study design categorization. In terms of adding to knowledge, this study’s proposed approach will augment the optimal use of case study research design by management, economics, and other disciplines’ researchers in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been a rekindling of interest in primary dental care research. However, there has been little investigation of the factors affecting these studies. This thesis examines primary dental care research pragmatically and from the dentists perspective. The Pulpotomy Study was undertaken In the northwest of England as a preliminary, prospective, pragmatic, longitudinal, multi-centred, cohort study in primary dental care. Forty primary care dentists undertook 334 pulpotomies In 316 participants on symptomatic primary molar teeth using Caustinerf Deciduous and/or Creosote BP. Pulpotomies were successful at reducing pain and sepsis. Over five years 77.3% of pulpotomies were successful. Pulpotomies were considered a suitable method of managing the child with pain and sepsis.

Abstract:
Case studies are widely used across a lot of different subject areas, however there are a lot of questions about the use of it because of the doubt in its’ contribution to science and the quality of it. The purpose with this research paper is to define the case study and the characteristics required in it for it to be classified and recognized as a “good” case study. Findings reveal that case study is defined in many different ways depending on the area of subject it is presented in. A good case study is reliable, valid and is used as a qualitative research method and it contains a lot of depth in the investigated single case.

Abstract:
Agile methods have been widely implemented in the industry while teaching these methods is a substantial part of Computer Science and Engineering program curricula. Evidencedriven data of agile practices, methods, and tools have been extracted based on empirical studies with students, however, there is an important need for more anecdotal evidence to confirm these findings. In order to fill this gap, this paper explores the perceptions and the applicability of the Scrum Framework in a student research team in an industrial context. Empirical data have been gathered through interviews with the case study participants combined with a survey. The analysis reveals that student experiences are mainly positive and that they can easily grasp the benefits of Scrum Framework. The challenges of implementing Scrum in such a setting mainly concern the balance between coach and self-organization, formulating accurate user stories when researching, finding the most suitable estimation method, as well as planning when conducting research. The empirical findings may potentially be extrapolated in student scrum teams or even in industrial settings. Finally, this research paper should encourage other researchers to investigate the adoption of Scrum in a student setting.

Abstract:
The following satírical case study of a government supportcd program of research was conceived during a concert by a weil-known pianist. In the region in which the concert was being given, there was no hall suitable for a concert of such quality. The performance was given in a large athletic arena, despite the accoustical characteristics of such a facility. As the author tried to ignore the sounds and listen to the music, he reflected on other incongruities. Eventually ghosts of past research supported by public funds began to haunt hirn. The fictitious story that follows is partly a summation of those disharmonic thoutghts, and is considered in terms of devclopment of public policy for research support by gobernmental agencies in a democracy. lt is the responsibility of researchers and scholars in a democracy to educate the public about the need to support high quality research activitíes. When this responsibility is not met, political issues can become more ímportant in determining research priorities than comrnon sense or scientific neccssity.

Aliprandi-Costa, Bernadette. "Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) ‒ A Case Study." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18175.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The Australian healthcare system is complex. Assessing the quality of the care provided in the management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is problematic because of disparate systems that constrain an integrated reporting approach. Registry data reported within a comparative effectiveness research (CER) framework establishes the case for clinical process indicators to measure and report hospital performance. Objectives: To aggregate data from The Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) and the Cooperative National Registry of Acute Coronary Care Guideline Adherence and Clinical Events (CONCORDANCE) to describe temporal trends in the management of ACS and associations with in-hospital events, hospital readmission and six month mortality; to develop a composite score of hospital performance quality; to determine associations between adherence to the quality composite score and in-hospital events, hospital readmission and six month mortality and develop a benchmarked stakeholder hospital performance report. Methods: A single case study embedding three units of analysis was used to explore and explain how data reported in a CER framework measures hospital performance in the management of ACS. Analysis: Descriptive analyses of prospectively collected data on the management and outcomes of over 7000 patients admitted to 46 hospitals from 1999 to 2016. Findings: The first Unit of Analysis reports temporal trends in the management of ACS across 11 hospitals in the GRACE registry from 2000 to 2007 which informed the design of the CONCORDANCE registry; The second Unit of Analysis combines both GRACE and CONCORDANCE registries and reports on the management of ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI ) from 1999 to 2016 revealing gains in pre-hospital care and fewer in-hospital clinical events, and readmission for urgent revascularisation without a significant reduction in in-hospital or six month mortality. The third Unit of Analysis reports the observed and risk-adjusted association between adherence to the quality composite score and reduced in-hospital events, and increased survival at hospital discharge and at six months post discharge. Conclusion: Case-study analysis of CER in the context of ACS registries provides evidence on adherence to evidence-based care and a quality composite measure of hospital performance in the management of ACS.

Louw, I., and Zuber-Skeritt. "Reflecting on a leadership development programme: a case study in South African higher education." Perspectives in Education, 2009. http://encore.tut.ac.za/iii/cpro/DigitalItemViewPage.external?sp=1001715.

Full text
Abstract:
Leadership development in higher education is of vital importance to South Africa’s future. We present a case study that focuses on a leadership development programme (LDP) through action learning and action research (ALAR) for women academics in South Africa during 2000 and 2001. It identifies the effects of the LDP on participants five years after the programme. The evaluation process encouraged participants to reflect on their own learning, research growth and leadership capabilities, and on how they may further develop their practice and career. Reflecting on this evaluation, we have conceptualized the results and developed process models of leadership deve lopment through action research. These models may be used as a framework for designing, conducting and evaluating leadership or other professional development programmes in higher education.

Full text
Abstract:
Countries around the world, both developed and emerging, agree that financial literacy education (FLE) is of critical importance, with current economic times having led to an opportune moment for financial education. The 2008 global financial crisis (GFC), increasingly complex financial markets, and widespread growth of alternative or predatory financial services are all valid reasons for FLE. At present FLE is considered an essential 21st century life skill for individuals to acquire. Opportunities to teach individuals how to make simple financial decisions about money management and exposure to financial dilemmas an individual might face are some of the approaches used. Ensuring that individuals manage their personal finances effectively so that they have adequate funds to enable a comfortable retirement tends to be the dominating push of FLE. Indeed, this conventional FLE approach is often packaged as easy to acquire skills and knowledge that individuals are expected to follow to effectively manage their finances. The conventional approach also operates from a deficit perspective where assumptions are made about what an individual can or cannot do based on their financial circumstances. Moreover, the social structures that exist to ensure that both poverty and extreme wealth co-exist are not exposed. Therefore, caution should be taken when viewing education as the sole solution to the world’s economic problems as there are other factors to consider such as socio-economic status (SES), gender, culture and behaviour.

Hsu, Cheng-Yi. "Exploring the relationship between case study and action research : case study research being organised on the Kaohsiung Harbour in Taiwan." Thesis, University of Hull, 2001. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:12794.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation reports on a case study investigation of the organisational setting of the Kaohsiung Harbour Bureau (KHB) in Taiwan. It reports on my methodological contribution in doing my study in a particular way, namely, by making use of my position in the Harbour to help develop multi-views in relation to the future. I tried not to abuse my working position as a former manager of warehousing and my current position as a researcher to make definite recommendations for action~ but I wanted to create some options for thinking about future plans for privatisation of port activities through involving less power distance than is normally associated with planning in the Harbour. My study was not carried out by trying to operate in a neutral fashion. For instance, I clearly had an own involvement in raising questions in the interviews (individual and group) with participants and in the way I developed further questions during interviews and also carried information across interviews. I also tried to create some discussion on important issues that created high emotional responses for participants. I call my case study research, which was organised to be active in the hope to be of some benefit to participants, a special kind of case study. I reflect on the roles I played in the special case study in the dissertation. The dissertation also reports on the theoretical contribution that I think I have made in relation to some themes arising from the case study (cross-cultural learning, politics and development, and the relevance of systems thinking). It gives details on how these themes could be explored with reference to the case. I discuss the themes in relation to wider literature on the topics and I add my ideas.

It allows the student-researcher to build one-dimensional and multidimensional models of the phenomena and processes that are being studied. Social Statistics course programs from foreign universities (University of Arkansas; Athabasca University; HSE University, Russia; McMaster University, Canada) are analyzed. The article provides an example using the education data set – Guardian UK universities ranking in Social Statistics course. Examples of research questions are given, data analysis for these questions is performed (correlation, hypothesis testing, discriminant analysis). During the research the discriminant model with group variable – modified Guardian score – and 9 predictors: course satisfaction, teaching quality, feedback, staff-student ratio, money spent on each student and other) was built. Lower student’s satisfaction with feedback was found to be significantly different from the satisfaction with teaching. The article notes the modeling and statistical analysis should be accompanied by a meaningful interpretation of the results. In this example, we discussed the essence of university ratings, the purpose of Guardian rating, the operationalization and measurement of such concepts as satisfaction with teaching, feedback; ways to use statistics in education, data sources etc. with students. Ways of using this education data in group and individual work of students are suggested.

Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) operates, maintains, and manages over $232 billion worth of the Nation’s water resource infrastructure. Using Operational Condition Assessments (OCA), the USACE allocates limited resources to assess asset condition in efforts to minimize risks associated with asset performance degradation, but decision makers require a greater understanding of those risks. The analysis of risk associated with Flood Risk Management assets in the context of its associated watershed system includes understanding the consequences of the asset’s failure and a determination of the likelihood that the asset will perform as expected given the current OCA ratings of critical components. This research demonstrates an application of a scalable methodology to model the probability of a dam performing as expected given the state of its subordinate gates and their components. The research team combines this likelihood with consequences generated by the application of designed simulation experiments with hydrological models to develop a measure of risk. The resulting risk scores serve as an input for an optimization program that outputs the optimal set of components to conduct OCAs on to minimize risk in the watershed. Proof-of-concept results for an initial case study on the Jennings Randolph Dam are provided.

Abstract:
In recent years, mission-oriented approaches have received growing interest in science, technology and innovation (STI) policies against the background of two developments. First, while so-called “horizontal” or “generic” approaches to research, technology and innovation policies have largely been successful in improving the general innovation performance or the rate of innovation, there are perceived limitations in terms of insufficiently addressing the direction of technological change and innovation. Second, “grand societal challenges” emerged on policy agendas, such as climate change, security, food and energy supply or ageing populations, which call for thematic orientation and the targeting of research and innovation efforts. In addition, the apparent success of some mission-oriented initiatives in countries like China, South Korea, and the United States in boosting technological development for purposes of strengthening competitiveness contributed to boosting the interest in targeted and directional government interventions in STI. Against the backdrop of this renewed interest in mission-oriented STI policy, the OECD has addressed the growing importance of this topic and launched a project looking into current experiences with Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy (MOIP). The present study on MOIP in Austria was commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Energy, Mobility, Environment, Innovation and Technologiy (BMK) and comprises the Austrian contributions to this OECD project. The study aims at contributing Austrian experiences to the international debate and to stimulate a national debate on MOIP.
