Abstract:
This paper discusses a drawing in the Lanciani collection representing the excavations of a tomb at the Vigna Casali in 1871–2. This tomb had a rich collection of antiquities, including important sarcophagi now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek. The drawing, which is wrongly catalogued as depicting the Vigna Casati, has not hitherto been connected with these finds. It was made on site by Francesco Patrizi (1826–1905), a supporter of contemporary painting, amateur artist, and owner of the Villa Patrizi not far away. This article correlates the information contained in the drawing with contemporary descriptions of the excavations and a measured drawing made for the Casali family at the time, in order to understand better what the site contained.

Abstract:
AbstractCaptured on a failed 1535 diplomatic mission to Hungary, English ambassador Giambattista Casali revealed in his confession the central roles played by diplomatic families in facilitating, managing, and prosecuting early modern diplomacy. This article explores how Casali and his brothers, by strategically positioning family members in the service of multiple patrons, drew on these flexible and overlapping networks of kinship and patronage to promote familial interests as well as those of their princely patrons. Focusing on the Casali family’s engagement in Hungarian diplomacy between 1529 and 1535, the article illustrates how the Casali solicited appointments, managed multiple loyalties, and negotiated the conflicts of interest resulting from their colorful and active diplomacy between England, Rome, Bologna, Venice, and Hungary at the zenith of English and Hungarian relations with the papal curia.

Abstract:
Abstract Background A comprehensive team approach for increasing stay away from bed time (SaB-time) called CASaB was conducted at multiple rehabilitation hospitals. Aims The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between SaB-time and clinical rehabilitation outcomes (CROs) before introducing CASaB (observational phase), and comparing CROs before and after CASaB (CASaB phase). Methods This prospective observational study included patients who were admitted to nine rehabilitation hospitals, with complete data. The final analysis included 197/229 patients in the observation phase, and 229/256 patients in the CASaB phase. We first tested whether SaB-time was positively associated with CROs in an observational study, then compared CROs before and after CASaB. Results In the observation phase, longer SaB-time was significantly associated with greater rehabilitation efficiency (REy) after adjusting for confounders (standardized β = 0.20, p = 0.007). In a comparison of CROs before and after CASaB, the length of hospital stay during the CASaB phase was significantly shorter than during the observational phase (61.5, 57.6–65.4 days vs 75.6, 71.4–79.9 days, p < 0.001), and the REy after CASaB was significantly greater than that before the CASaB (0.38, 0.33–0.42/day vs 0.28, 0.25–0.33/day, p = 0.006). Discussion The current results suggest that increasing SaB-time may help the recovery of functional abilities, particularly for patients in rehabilitation hospitals. Conclusions The CASaB provides a method for improving the recovery efficiency of patients in rehabilitation hospitals.

Abstract:
AbstractBy employing Gregorio Casali as his permanent representative at the curia from 1525, King Henry VIII of England acquired a diplomatic structure not uncommon in sixteenth-century Europe: the family consortium. This article illustrates the functioning of that structure, presenting new evidence relating to Casali’s background and career, and assessing both the benefits that accrued to the English crown as a consequence of his employment, and the advantages that Casali and his family acquired through their service to a foreign prince. It argues that the concept of “credit” both in a metaphorical and financial sense offers a useful means of understanding the relationship between the Casali family and the English crown in the 1520s and 1530s. As the family made available to their patrons their social and financial resources at the curia, in turn their role as representatives of a leading European prince served to enhance their social status.

Abstract In ‘The Ockhamization of the event sources of sound’, Casati et al. (2013) argue that ‘ockhamizing’ Casey O’Callaghan’s account of sounds as proper parts of their event sources yields their preferred view: that sounds are identical with their event sources. This article argues that the considerations Casati et al. marshal in favour of their view are actually stronger considerations in favour of a quite different view: a variant on the Lockean conception of sounds as ‘sensible qualities’ that treats sounds as audible properties of their event sources.

Abstract:
Mobility has become an omnipresent part of our modern IT society. Alongside the general mobility taxonomy of mobile users, terminals, sessions and services, there are also more specialized forms of mobility. Context Awareness Supported Application Mobility (CASAM) or “Application Mobility” is one such form that is explored in this paper. CASAM builds on the idea of using context to move an application between different devices during its execution, in order to provide relevant information and/or services. In this article we use a concept-driven approach to advance mobile systems research, integrating it with a more traditional user-centric method and a case study, further exploring the concept of CASAM. To empirically situate our design work we conducted an empirical study of a home care service group serving the Swedish municipality of Skellefteå, followed by an exercise in matching the properties of the CASAM concept in relation to problems within current workflow (e.g. scheduling, travel, care situation, communication and debriefing). The result is a proposal for an IT artifact manifesting the CASAM concept, attending to all the identified problems while at the same time validating the concept.

Abstract:
This paper presents an obstacle-avoidance trajectory tracking method based on a nonlinear model prediction, with a dynamic environment considered in the trajectory tracking of nonholonomic mobile robots for obstacle avoidance. In this method, collision avoidance is embedded into the trajectory tracking control problem as a nonlinear constraint of the position state, which changes with time to solve the obstacle-avoidance problem in dynamic environments. The CasADi toolkit was used in MATLAB to generate a real-time, efficient C++ code with inequality constraints to avoid collisions. Trajectory tracking and obstacle avoidance in dynamic and static environments are trialed using MATLAB and CasADi simulations, and the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm is verified.

Abstract:
AbstractThe extent of racemization of aspartic acid (Asp) has been used to estimate the ages of 9 shells of the epifaunal calcitic brachiopod Bouchardia rosea and 9 shells of the infaunal aragonitic bivalve Semele casali. Both taxa were collected concurrently from the same sites at depths of 10 m and 30 m off the coast of Brazil. Asp D/L values show an excellent correlation with radiocarbon age at both sites and for both taxa (r2Site 9 B. rosea = 0.97, r2Site 1 B. rosea = 0.997, r2Site 9 S. casali = 0.9998, r2Site 1 S. casali = 0.93). The Asp ratios plotted against reservoir-corrected AMS radiocarbon ages over the time span of multiple millennia can thus be used to develop reliable and precise geochronologies not only for aragonitic mollusks (widely used for dating previously), but also for calcitic brachiopods. At each collection site, Bouchardia specimens display consistently higher D/L values than specimens of Semele. Thermal differences between sites are also notable and in agreement with theoretical expectations, as extents of racemization for both taxa are greater at the warmer, shallower site than at the cooler, deeper one. In late Holocene marine settings, concurrent time series of aragonitic and calcitic shells can be assembled using Asp racemization dating, and parallel multi-centennial to multi-millennial records can be developed simultaneously for multiple biomineral systems.

ABSTRACT: Although now little-remembered, the nineteenth century administrator and philanthropist, Emin Pasha (olim Eduard Carl Oscar Theodor Schnitzer), was a much respected figure, not least in natural history circles where he attained some standing as a collector, primarily of birds, mammals and insects. His collections are well documented. However, evidence from his butterflies suggests that some specimens were not actually collected by him. Instead, there was a significant contribution from the Italian explorer Gaetano Casati, whose role does not appear to be recognised by Emin Pasha's contemporaries.

Abstract:
This work presents the first-order comprehensive adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology (1st-CASAM) for computing efficiently the first-order sensitivities (i.e., functional derivatives) of operator-valued responses (i.e., model results) of general models of coupled nonlinear physical systems characterized by imprecisely known or and/or uncertain parameters, external boundaries, and internal interfaces between the coupled systems. The explicit mathematical formalism developed within the 1st-CASAM for computing the first-order sensitivities of operator-valued response to uncertain internal interfaces and external boundaries in the models’ phase–space enables this methodology to generalize all of the previously published methodologies for computing first-order response sensitivities. The computational resources needed for using forward versus adjoint operators in conjunction with spectral versus collocation methods for computing the response sensitivities are analyzed in detail. By enabling the exact computations of operator-valued response sensitivities to internal interfaces and external boundary parameters and conditions, the 1st-CASAM presented in this work makes it possible, inter alia, to quantify the effects of manufacturing tolerances on operator-valued responses of physical and engineering systems.

Abstract:
This work presents the novel first-order comprehensive adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology for critical points (1st-CASAM-CP), which enables the exact and efficient computation of the first-order sensitivities of responses defined at critical points (maxima, minima, saddle points) of coupled nonlinear models of physical systems characterized by imprecisely known parameters underlying the models, boundaries, and interfaces between the coupled systems. Responses defined at critical points are important in many applications, including system optimization, safety analyses and licensing. For the design and licensing of nuclear reactors, such essentially important responses include the maximum temperatures of the fuel and cladding in hot channels. The 1st-CASAM-CP presented in this work makes it possible to determine, using a single large-scale “adjoint” computation, the first-order sensitivities of the magnitude of a response defined at a critical point of a function in the phase-space of the systems’ independent variables. In addition, the 1st-CASAM-CP enables the computation of the sensitivities of the location in phase-space of the critical point at which the respective response is located: one “adjoint” computation is required for each component of the respective critical point in the phase-space of independent variables. By enabling the exact and efficient computation of the sensitivities of responses and of their critical locations to imprecisely known model parameters, boundaries, and interfaces, the 1st-CASAM-CP significantly extends the practicality of analyzing crucially important responses for large-scale systems involving many uncertain parameters, interfaces, and boundaries.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In spite of the steady increase in the incidence of Staphylococcus aureus infections, it remains a relatively uncommon cause of meningitis. To our knowledge, no series of community-acquired S. aureus meningitis (CASAM) restricted to children has been published. So far in this retrospective study we report our experience with CASAM in children, hospitalized from 1983 to 1998 at Nossa Senhora da Glória Children's Hospital (HINSG). During the sixteen-year study period, 2,319 new cases of acute pyogenic meningitis were diagnosed at HINSG. Community-acquired S. aureus was identified as the causative agent in 30 patients (1.3 percent). The predominantly spinal localization of the agent is stressed. In contrast with publications which analyze adults, it has a better prognosis.

Cacuci, Dan Gabriel. "Fourth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis (4th-CASAM) of Response-Coupled Linear Forward/Adjoint Systems: I. Theoretical Framework." Energies 14, no. 11 (June 6, 2021): 3335. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/en14113335.

Abstract:
The most general quantities of interest (called “responses”) produced by the computational model of a linear physical system can depend on both the forward and adjoint state functions that describe the respective system. This work presents the Fourth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (4th-CASAM) for linear systems, which enables the efficient computation of the exact expressions of the 1st-, 2nd-, 3rd- and 4th-order sensitivities of a generic system response, which can depend on both the forward and adjoint state functions, with respect to all of the parameters underlying the respective forward/adjoint systems. Among the best known such system responses are various Lagrangians, including the Schwinger and Roussopoulos functionals, for analyzing ratios of reaction rates, the Rayleigh quotient for analyzing eigenvalues and/or separation constants, etc., which require the simultaneous consideration of both the forward and adjoint systems when computing them and/or their sensitivities (i.e., functional derivatives) with respect to the model parameters. Evidently, such responses encompass, as particular cases, responses that may depend just on the forward or just on the adjoint state functions pertaining to the linear system under consideration. This work also compares the CPU-times needed by the 4th-CASAM versus other deterministic methods (e.g., finite-difference schemes) for computing response sensitivities These comparisons underscore the fact that the 4th-CASAM is the only practically implementable methodology for obtaining and subsequently computing the exact expressions (i.e., free of methodologically-introduced approximations) of the 1st-, 2nd, 3rd- and 4th-order sensitivities (i.e., functional derivatives) of responses to system parameters, for coupled forward/adjoint linear systems. By enabling the practical computation of any and all of the 1st-, 2nd, 3rd- and 4th-order response sensitivities to model parameters, the 4th-CASAM makes it possible to compare the relative values of the sensitivities of various order, in order to assess which sensitivities are important and which may actually be neglected, thus enabling future investigations of the convergence of the (multivariate) Taylor series expansion of the response in terms of parameter variations, as well as investigating the range of validity of other important quantities (e.g., response variances/covariance, skewness, kurtosis, etc.) that are derived from Taylor-expansion of the response as a function of the model’s parameters. The 4th-CASAM presented in this work provides the basis for significant future advances towards overcoming the “curse of dimensionality” in sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification and predictive modeling.

Robert Casati and Achille C. Varzi, argue that time machines would be useless or have no practical applications on the grounds that travelling to the past would involve doing what has already been done. I argue that the sense in which travelling to the past involves doing what has already been done fails to support the claim that time machines would have no practical applications.
