Abstract:
This paper discusses a drawing in the Lanciani collection representing the excavations of a tomb at the Vigna Casali in 1871–2. This tomb had a rich collection of antiquities, including important sarcophagi now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek. The drawing, which is wrongly catalogued as depicting the Vigna Casati, has not hitherto been connected with these finds. It was made on site by Francesco Patrizi (1826–1905), a supporter of contemporary painting, amateur artist, and owner of the Villa Patrizi not far away. This article correlates the information contained in the drawing with contemporary descriptions of the excavations and a measured drawing made for the Casali family at the time, in order to understand better what the site contained.

AbstractCaptured on a failed 1535 diplomatic mission to Hungary, English ambassador Giambattista Casali revealed in his confession the central roles played by diplomatic families in facilitating, managing, and prosecuting early modern diplomacy. This article explores how Casali and his brothers, by strategically positioning family members in the service of multiple patrons, drew on these flexible and overlapping networks of kinship and patronage to promote familial interests as well as those of their princely patrons. Focusing on the Casali family’s engagement in Hungarian diplomacy between 1529 and 1535, the article illustrates how the Casali solicited appointments, managed multiple loyalties, and negotiated the conflicts of interest resulting from their colorful and active diplomacy between England, Rome, Bologna, Venice, and Hungary at the zenith of English and Hungarian relations with the papal curia.

Abstract:
Abstract Background A comprehensive team approach for increasing stay away from bed time (SaB-time) called CASaB was conducted at multiple rehabilitation hospitals. Aims The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between SaB-time and clinical rehabilitation outcomes (CROs) before introducing CASaB (observational phase), and comparing CROs before and after CASaB (CASaB phase). Methods This prospective observational study included patients who were admitted to nine rehabilitation hospitals, with complete data. The final analysis included 197/229 patients in the observation phase, and 229/256 patients in the CASaB phase. We first tested whether SaB-time was positively associated with CROs in an observational study, then compared CROs before and after CASaB. Results In the observation phase, longer SaB-time was significantly associated with greater rehabilitation efficiency (REy) after adjusting for confounders (standardized β = 0.20, p = 0.007). In a comparison of CROs before and after CASaB, the length of hospital stay during the CASaB phase was significantly shorter than during the observational phase (61.5, 57.6–65.4 days vs 75.6, 71.4–79.9 days, p < 0.001), and the REy after CASaB was significantly greater than that before the CASaB (0.38, 0.33–0.42/day vs 0.28, 0.25–0.33/day, p = 0.006). Discussion The current results suggest that increasing SaB-time may help the recovery of functional abilities, particularly for patients in rehabilitation hospitals. Conclusions The CASaB provides a method for improving the recovery efficiency of patients in rehabilitation hospitals.

Mordeglia, Cristina. "The Home-Office Lighting Kit." Thesis, KTH, Ljusdesign, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-297959.

Full text
Abstract:
This Master Thesis, inspired by the relevance that home-offices have assumed as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, originated from the architectural, quantitative, and qualitative analysis of lighting within the author’s student accommodation on KTH Main Campus, in Stockholm (Sweden). As a matter of fact, this background study proved that recommended lighting levels (Illuminance, Contrast Ratio, CCT, CRI, M-EDI, and DER values) were not met, making the space unsuitable and unhealthy to both live and work in. Moreover, evaluating individual lighting preferences, it was demonstrated that flexibility, customizability, and adaptability to daylighting and tasks are fundamental requirements for working from home.Considering the temporary nature of students’ leases, the idea of developing an inexpensive and easily assemblable kit of smart products, aimed at improving lighting in dormitories, came quite naturally. To study the implementation of visual comfort and focus on tasks, literature review, market analysis, quantitative measurements, and hands-on experiments were carried on.Thus, with the gained knowledge and experience, the Home-Office Lighting Kit, an array of commercially available sockets, shades, and smart sources, supporting circadian rhythm and individual preferences, was proposed. Along with it, instructions on set-up and scenarios were provided.Although the overall conclusion was that the market needs products with a better balance between price, sturdiness, and reliability, the lighting conditions within the case study space were substantially improved, making other students interested in doing the same.Eventually, interesting cues for the sector’s development were proposed.

Leek, Viktor. "An Optimal Control Toolbox for MATLAB Based on CasADi." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Fordonssystem, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-130891.

Full text
Abstract:
Many engineering problems are naturally posed as optimal control problems. It may involve moving between two points in the fastest possible way, or to put a satellite into orbit with minimum energy consumption. Many optimal control problems are too difficult to be solved analytically and therefore require the use of numerical methods. The numerical methods that are the most widespread are the so-called direct methods. However, there is one major drawback with these. If the problem is non-convex, the solution is not guaranteed globally optimal, that is, the absolute best, instead it is guaranteed locally optimal, that is the best in its vicinity. To compensate for this, the problem should be solved several times, under different conditions, in order to investigate whether the solution is a good candidate for the global optimum. CasADi is a software specifically designed for dynamic optimization. It has gained wide spread in recent years because it provides all the necessary building blocks for dynamic optimization. This has given individual engineers and scientists the ability to independently formulate and solve all sorts of optimal control problems. However, this requires good theoretical knowledge of the necessary numerical methods. The advantage of a toolbox, which solves general optimal control problems, is that the underlying numerical methods have been tested and shown to function on optimal control problems with known solutions. This means that the user does not need exhaustive knowledge of the numerical methods involved, but can focus on formulating and solving optimal control problems. The main contribution of this thesis is an optimal control toolbox for MATLAB based on CasADi. The toolbox does not require expert knowledge of the numerical methods, but provides an alternative lower level abstraction that allows for more complex problem formulations. The toolbox implements two direct methods, direct multiple shooting and direct collocation. This allows a problem formulation with many degrees of freedom. The most important property of the toolbox is that the discretization can be changed, without the problem formulation needing to be altered. This way the user can easily change the conditions for his/her problem. The thesis describes how the two implemented direct methods work, and the design choices made. It also describes what remains to test and evaluate, and the problems that have been used as a reference during the development process.

Abstract:
After studying Japanese language at Ca’ Foscari in the early 1870s, Luigi Casati spent most of his diplomatic career in Japan. Later, he moved to The Great Empire of Korea that, under the Eulsa Treaty of 1905, had become a protectorate of Japan. Casati was Italian consul in Seoul for about three years, and here he spent his final days with two of his daughters. Diplomatic records indicate that at the time Italy was trying to expand its economic presence on the peninsula through the acquisition of a gold mining concession and the increase of trade but, unlike his predecessors (one authored several books and articles and another was a favorite of the small expat community), little has been published about the Casati family’s daily interactions. Through the use of contemporary English-language and Korean newspapers and family history, this paper reveals the final years and resting place of Casati, who died in December 1909. A little over 8 months later, Japan annexed the peninsula making Luigi Casati the last Italian Consul to the Great Empire of Korea.

Abstract:
Mobility has become an omnipresent part of our modern IT society. Alongside the general taxonomy of mobile users, terminals, sessions, and services, there are also more specialized forms of mobility. Context-Awareness Supported Application Mobility (CASAM) or “Application Mobility” is one such form that is explored in this chapter. CASAM builds on the idea of using context to move an application between different devices during its execution in order to provide relevant information and/or services. The authors use a concept-driven approach to advance mobile systems research, integrating it with a more traditional user-centric method and a case study, further exploring the concept of CASAM. To empirically situate our design work they conducted an empirical study of a home care service group serving the Swedish municipality of Skellefteå, followed by an exercise in matching the properties of the CASAM concept in relation to problems within current workflow.

Abstract:
This paper presents an extension to the Geometric Multi-Scale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM) developed by Casadei et al. to predict the dynamic response of heterogeneous materials and structures. The proposed approach introduces elements enriched by the natural modes over their own domain. When heterogeneities are present, the auxiliary fine-scale mesh from GMsFEM is used to calculate the modes numerically. The enrichment scheme is also chosen in such a way that it automatically satisfies continuity across boundaries. The computational efficiency of the method is compared to that of traditional finite element formulations through selected benchmark problems.
