Abstract:
Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is a perishable and climacteric fruit. The peel surface of guava is soft. During transportation, guava surface is rupture lack of proper packaging. Two types of corrugated fibre board (CFB) cartons of 7 and 5 ply and one type of wooden box were designed and fabricated for transportation of guava in Farm Machinery and Postharvest Process Engineering (FMPE) Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur in 2013. The dimensions of the cartons were 513 x 300 x 240 mm and 400 x 300 x 300 mm. The 7 ply cartons of both the size were found better than those of 5 ply cartons in terms of static load bearing capacity. The carton of 513 x 300 x 240 mm was better than that of second one. The holding capacities of these cartons were about 18-20 kg of guava. The static load bearing capacities of both the cartons of 7 and 5 ply cartons were 90 and 70 kg, respectively. Green matured guava was harvested, sorted and packed in different packages, such as bamboo basket, wooden box, plastic crate, and CFB cartons. They were transported from Sharupkhati of Barisal to Gazipur by a track. Then the guava packages were opened in FMPE Division, BARI, Gazipur and stored at ambient temperature (28.8 ± 2°C) and humidity (87± 2%) for 8 days. The highest shelf-life of guava was found in wooden box without wrapping and the lowest shelf-life was in CFB cartons with polyethylene (0.05 mm) having 2% perforation. Wooden box was found suitable as packaging material for transportation of guava in terms of freshness, shelf-life, and packaging cost. Packaging cost of CFB cartons was higher followed by that of plastic crate, wooden box, and bamboo basket. Packaging costs of plastic crate and wooden box were cheaper than those of CFB cartons and bamboo basket. Plastic crate and wooden box should be used for local market to transport the fruits. CFB carton may be used for export market or supper market. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjar.v39i2.20437 Bangladesh J. Agril. Res. 39(2): 337-350, June 2014

Abstract:
Carton detection is an important technique in the automatic logistics system and can be applied to many applications such as the stacking and unstacking of cartons and the unloading of cartons in the containers. However, there is no public large-scale carton dataset for the research community to train and evaluate the carton detection models up to now, which hinders the development of carton detection. In this article, we present a large-scale carton dataset named Stacked Carton Dataset (SCD) with the goal of advancing the state-of-the-art in carton detection. Images were collected from the Internet and several warehouses, and objects were labeled for precise localization using instance mask annotation. There were a total of 250,000 instance masks from 16,136 images. Naturally, a suite of benchmarks was established with several popular detectors and instance segmentation models. In addition, we designed a carton detector based on RetinaNet by embedding our proposed Offset Prediction between the Classification and Localization module (OPCL) and the Boundary Guided Supervision module (BGS). OPCL alleviates the imbalance problem between classification and localization quality, which boosts AP by 3.1∼4.7% on SCD at the model level, while BGS guides the detector to pay more attention to the boundary information of cartons and decouple repeated carton textures at the task level. To demonstrate the generalization of OPCL for other datasets, we conducted extensive experiments on MS COCO and PASCAL VOC. The improvements in AP on MS COCO and PASCAL VOC were 1.8∼2.2% and 3.4∼4.3%, respectively.

Abstract:
The volatile-producing fungus Muscodoralbus is being developed as a biological fumigant for postharvest use, as it can kill storage pathogens and control fungal decay in various commodities. A wettable pad or sachet system made of teabag paper containing desiccated rye grain culture of M. albus was designed for the biofumigation of individual fruit containers. The fungus is reactivated before use by a brief immersion of the pad in water. This research was conducted to determine the potential of the pad system for controlling decay of table grapes in commercial cartons. Individual pads containing 24 or 86 g of grain culture (to achieve a 1:10 ratio of fumigant to box volume or a 1:100 ratio of fumigant to fruit weight, respectively) were added to Styrofoam cartons containing 8.6 kg of freshly harvested `Thompson Seedless' (TS) or `Ruby Seedless' (RS) grapes, which were then placed in cold storage at –1 to 0 °C. Control cartons exposed to SO2 were placed in a separate storage room and SO2 fumigation was performed once for TS and weekly for RS. After 8 to 9 weeks, the grapes were taken out of storage and rated for decay. In the experiment with TS, the 24-g and 86-g pads provided significant control of gray mold rot when compared to untreated cartons and were not statistically different from cartons exposed to a single SO2 fumigation. In the experiment with RS, only the 86-g pads provided significant decay control. Measurements of the three most abundant volatile compounds in empty cartons containing 10 g of the biofumigant revealed that partial coverage of holes mimicking obstruction by packed fruit achieved levels of isobutyl alcohol, 2-methyl-1-butanol, and isobutyric acid of 0.7, 1.6, and 11.2 ppb, respectively.

Abstract:
AbstractThis work reports the evaluation of a tactile sensor for the potential of using it to measure the compliance of folding cartons. A tactile sensor would make it possible to measure the mechanical behavior locally around the contact point, in contrast to existing methods that measure the global mechanical behavior of the carton. Research on the haptic sense has shown that the local mechanical behavior is more important than the global behavior when humans assess compliance of objects. It is shown that the response of the tactile sensor correlates strongly with the bending stiffness of the board, but also with geometric features. A method for reducing the 22-dimensional output of the sensor to single meaningful feature using linear discriminant analysis is proposed and tested. The results show that the sensor is a good candidate for a method that incorporates both cutaneous and kinaesthetic information in the measure of carton compliance.

Abstract:
This work aims to present, analyze and discuss relations established by Stefan Zweig during this exile time, by using his letters between 1940 and 1942. A great letter writer, Zweig has a great number of letters with intellectuals, editors, friends, relatives; there are some letters which have already been published, in editions since 1960s, but there are many that are still unpublished and are kept in archives in Europa, South America and North America. Therefore this work was divided in three parts: the first part was the in loco documental research in two archives e.g. Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach, DLA, located in Marbach a. N. city, in Germany and Arquivo da Biblioteca Nacional, BN, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; the second part was to read and separate the letters from a first corpus, which was totally translated to Portuguese. On this first selection aspects were taken into account, that could show the relations between Zweig and European, American and Brazilian writers and intellectuals from his epoch, and that had a content which could have brought elements for the afterward analysis; and the third part was composed by the letters analysis itself, which could be separated in three different thematic groups: (i) Zweig between the World of Yesterday and the Land of the Future; (ii) Zweig and the literature; e (iii) Zweig in his own isolation. As theoretical basis a Stefan Zweigs text was used, called Kunst des Briefes, in which he discusses mainly characteristics about the letter genre and the literary status of the letter. Epistolography theoretical texts were also used to support this work.

Statistical process control charts (SPC charts) were created in the 20th century in the United States and since then, they have been used for various purposes in different industries and services. SPC chart utilization was widespread in Japan in the postwar period and its effective use in Brazil occurred from the 90´s. Although several examples of use, there are still some industries where deployment of SPC and its sustained use in shopfloor were not successful. In the chemical industry, its use in the shopfloor is controversial and there is no many studies focused on this industry to explain the factors that can impact the successful implementation of statistical control charts by operational teams. This dissertation aims to investigate, through an action research, which are the critical factors for a successful implementation and sustained use of SPC charts in a chemical. It was performed a literature review to gather studies about success factors to implement SPC chart in industries. Using action research, those critical success factors were tested in practice with operators in the chemical plant of a multinational enterprise located in Brazil. This chemical plant has experimented to implement SPC chart in the past with no success. As a result of the action research, we succeed to implement SPC chart in the industrial unit and reduce variability with savings of US$ 150,000.00 per year energy. SPC chart use was well received by operators and leadership, showing that some success factors are really critical for a correct SPC implementation in a brazilian chemical plant. The results were used to develop a roadmap for SPC, with details about how and when to work each success factor. Afterwards, Roadmap was used in another eight different industrial units of the chemical company, all with success.

Twelve comparatively popular cartoon characters, at present time, were selected for this study. Image vocabulary survey was used in the questionnaires on students as research subjects for discovering what people’s impressions on the cartoon characters. Generally, people express opinions on cartoon characters through the stories during cartoon broadcasting; nevertheless, this study intends to find out opinions about the lead characters in cartoons. The 12 cartoon characters selected were: Keroro, Hello Kitty, Doraemon,Garfield, Snoopy, MashiMaro, Chicken Little, Pikachu, Moomin, Totoro, Anpanman, and Pink Panther. A total of 615 questionnaires were distributed to students, and 536 valid questionnaires retrieved. Using method of semantic differential, eight pairs of bipolar adjectives were selected including: unlikable and likable; dislike and like; stupid and smart; artificial and creative; dull and mischievous; uninteresting and humorous; serious and relaxed; feminine and masculine. Seven steps rank scale was used for evaluation in the study. SPSS10.1 statistical analysis was used after retrieving questionnaires; the research results show the corresponding image of each cartoon character concluded as follows: 1.Hello Kitty was strongly featured as feminine; males do not have clear feminine/masculine image impression on Moomin; other ten cartoon characters have masculine characteristics. 2.It shows inconsistent image impression on the stupid/smart characteristic of cartoon lead characters for audiences in different gender and status. 3.The carton lead characters who show mischievous, humorous, relaxed image impression are comparatively welcome by audiences; those lead characters very creative in spirits are well-liked by students at all age groups. The difference of cartoon industry between Taiwan and developed countries is obvious to all. One of the unarguable facts is that Taiwan’s cartoon industry devotes tremendous vigor to “import processing”, in which cartoon companies deal with the process of the refinement of importing cartoon films. As a result, however, the finial formation of cartoon images and products belong to the producing companies, not Taiwan’s cartoon enterprises. Another remarkable fact that impacts the development of Taiwan’s cartoon industry is the shortage of capital. It can be described as a barrier for the development of cartoon industry in Taiwan. As we know, some of professionals working on cartoon creation are confronted with lacking capital. The fee of the simplest production of cartoon film will cost 32,000 per minute. For general companies, spending in several seconds or minutes of advertisement is affordable. Investing, however, in making dozens of or even one hundred of episodes of cartoons is not easy to bear for general enterprises. The most apparent distinction of cartoon industry between domestic companies and foreign companies occurs in production model. From the aspect of industry chain, the products of cartoon industry can be separated into three levels: the releasing market of cartoon film itself is the first layer; the second one is the market of cartoon books and image products; the third level is the deriving products of cartoon image, including costumes, toys, beverages, and children stuff etc. While foreign cartoon has developed into an industry with high-tech and completely modern production chain, the production chain of cartoon industry in Taiwan can be said to be incoherent and unconnected. In terms of management sectors in government mechanisms, the situation of uncooperative and unconsolidated operations existing among Ministry of Education, Council for Cultural Affairs, Government Information Office, and Institute for Information Industry, which have the authority to embark on the management of cartoon industry, have resulted in failing to form an effective and smooth industry chain. Therefore, it is imperative and compelling for Taiwanese government to eliminate split management in the current system. To break the barrier of capital insufficiency, simply depending on government’s investment is not working enough. The focus should be put on enormously encouraging the investment of social capital in cultural industry and actively attracting investment from both domestic and overseas in participating the development of cartoon industry. The purpose of this study was to provide domestic cartoon industry with the blueprint of inventing opportunities through transforming Niu-Gur’s Cartoon into animated cartoon, a feasible fund-raising strategy. Keywords: import processing, cartoon image, capital insufficiency, production model, industry chain, social capital, inventing opportunities.

Satirical culture is ubiquitous in all types of art and media, and the most common form of disclosure today is the political cartoons column of newspapers and magazines and online media. How did the cartoons come from? How to develop it? It is understood from the literature that cartoons began to be ridiculed by Leonardo Da Vinci's exaggerated characters in the fifteenth century. In the era of low literacy, with the invention of printing, people used image interpretation ideas to spread and communicate with groups. Consciousness has created a rich and diverse history of cartoons in Europe. In the 19th century, Japan and China were forced to open to the outside world in response to the invasion of Western powers. The acceptance of Western information and images opened up the exploration of its own satirical culture. This study can affect Taiwan’s vast countries through Japan and China. This study period can understand the roots of Taiwan's satirical culture through the development of satirical cartoons in the 19th and 20th centuries in Japan and China, which have affected Taiwan.

Abstract:
This paper presents a design for a reconfigurable packaging system that can handle cartons of different shape and sizes and is amenable to ever changing demands of packaging industries for perfumery and cosmetic products. The system takes structure of a multi-fingered robot hand, which can provide fine motions, and dexterous manipulation capability that may be required in a typical packaging-assembly line. The paper outlines advanced modeling and simulation undertaken to design the packaging system and discusses the experimental work carried out. The new packaging system is based on the principle of reconfigurability, that shows adaptability to simple as well as complex carton geometry. The rationale of developing such a system is presented with description of its human equivalent. The hardware and software implementations are also discussed together with directions for future research.

Abstract:
1.45 million tons of paraffin wax-coated boxes of used products enter landfills every year, and 4.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide is released during the recycling process. Therefore, the goal of the research is to find out an alternative to the synthetic wax coating seen on food product cartons. This research uses natural coating materials that are more effective than synthetic coating materials, such as hibiscus, gum Arabic, and turmeric. The natural antibacterial herb turmeric's curcumin is extracted using ethonal, and then heating is used to create the hibiscus extract. Three layers are coated on the package: the first layer is curcumin, which serves as the package's antimicrobial coating; the second layer is gum Arabic, which serves as a binder to hold the third layer of hibiscus. These two layers serve as a barrier on the packaging, and then the hibiscus extract gel is applied over them. Using a spray gun, these three coats are applied to the packaging. The method used to dry the coatings is air or sun drying. The test findings are assessed for the burst strength, burst factor, moisture content, smoothness, calliper thickness, and micropsoic analyses of the wax coated and bio coated carton samples.

Cartoons are an important art style, which not only has a unique drawing effect but also reflects the character itself, which is gradually loved by people. With the development of image processing technology, people's research on image research is no longer limited to image recognition, target detection, and tracking, but also images In this paper, we use deep learning based image processing to generate cartoon caricatures of human faces. Therefore, this paper investigates the use of deep learning-based methods to learn face features and convert image styles while preserving the original content features, to automatically generate natural cartoon avatars. In this paper, we study a face cartoon generation method based on content invariance. In the task of image style conversion, the content is fused with different style features based on the invariance of content information, to achieve the style conversion.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of using cartoons on primary school students’ academic achievement in social studies courses in Turkey. We preferred to conduct meta-analysis instead of traditional literature review. In accordance with the purpose of the study, we analyzed experimental research such as articles, dissertations, and papers which were obtained from Web of Science, ERIC, Scopus, Proquest, Ebscohost, Google Scholar, The Turkish Council of Higher Education Thesis Center, and Dergipark databases. We used [“cartoon” OR “comic” OR “caricature” AND “social studies”] search code in order to reach convenient publications. As a result of the literature review by using search code, 25 publications that were conducted as experimental studies between 2006 and 2020, were listed. 9 publications were eliminated since they had non-parametric values in normality tests and have no standard deviation values of control and experimental group posttests. Moreover, publications that have no achievement test were eliminated as well. Finally, 16 studies were included. We used R software to analyze the data. Cohen’s d, Hedge’s g values, and sampling variances of all publications were calculated. Heterogeneity and publication bias of studies were also checked before proceeding to the main analysis. The random-effects model was performed to calculate the overall effect size. As a result of the analysis, a large effect size was found. In other words, using cartoons has a large effect on primary school students’ academic achievement in social studies courses in Turkey.

Abstract:
This project adressed by this paper was undertaken by two teams of undergraduate students in a Junior level design studio course within the School of Industrial Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The problem addressed by these students was identified and presented to the class by a local medical equipment manufacturer. In a brief that was provided to the class, the sponsor described the need for a reliable dispensing system for N-95 Masks to be used in the clinical environment. It had been observed that masks are typically stocked in open cartons or in improvised arrangements of repurposed baskets/containers that may be stacked on shelves or attached directly to walls. Since the industry sponsor offers a wall mounted rail system to provide equipment management in healthcare environments, it was expected that any design concept proposed be compatible with this proprietary system. The sponsor also made it clear that the use of electrical power in the design of dispensing mechanisms should be avoided so “smart” solutions were not explored in the course of this project. After being briefed on the problem and goals of the industry sponsor, students began with background research intended to help identify and understand the needs of various users, existing solutions, the use environment, as well as specific developmental requirements. Based on this preliminary research, students developed design goals and design criteria to guide subsequent development of conceptual design solutions. Aside from making the design ergonomic and user-friendly to operate, easy to manufacture, and aesthetically acceptable, the over-arching design objective of this project was the development of a design which (1) could be easily loaded directly from mask packaging; and (2) could reliably dispense masks with minimal failures (including failure to dispense, dispensing of multiple masks at a time, incomplete dispensing of masks and miscellaneous jams of the dispensing mechanisms). To achieve this goal, it was necessary for students to undertake a process of iterative prototyping and testing of their design concepts in order to fine tune design detailing and optimize functionality. This paper details the process of how iterative prototyping and testing was utilized by students to fine-tune their design concepts into reliable and user-friendly N-95 mask dispenser solutions. This effort was unique and educationally significant in that the typical design studio project results in conceptual solutions that seldom need to undergo such testing and refinement.

Full text
Abstract:
The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) constructed a full-scale unsurfaced test section to evaluate the performance of two prototype geogrids, referred to as NX950 and NX750, in road applications. The test section consisted of a 10-in.-thick crushed aggregate surface layer placed over a very weak 2 California Bearing Ratio (CBR) clay subgrade. Simulated truck traffic was applied using one of ERDC’s specially designed load carts outfitted with a single-axle dual wheel truck gear. Rutting performance and instrumentation response data were monitored at multiple traffic intervals. It was found that the prototype geogrids improved rutting performance when compared to the unstabilized test item, and that the test item containing NX950 had the best rutting performance. Further, instrumentation response data indicated that the geogrids reduced measured pressure and deflection near the surface of the subgrade layer. Pressure response data in the aggregate layer suggested that the geogrids redistributed applied pressure higher in the aggregate layer, effectively changing the measured stress profile with an increase in pavement depth.
