Abstract:
Abstract Nahdlatul Ulama is a socio-religious organization founded by K.H. Hasyim Asy'ary with the elderly Kyai in East Java by carrying out the ideals of civilization, namely to create a harmonious and just world order based on morality. Manisrenggo is an area where people do not understand the teachings of Islam, so the majority of people still behave in violation of religious norms such as drinking, gambling, and believing in animism and dynamism. NU began to be known in Manisrenggo District around 1983 which was brought by K.H Masyhudi Hamid, a local Ulama from Wonokromo who moved to Klaten to carry out his duties as a Projo Pager or Satpol PP, as well as preaching to spread Islam to the Manisrenggo Community. This research uses the theory of great tradition and little tradition or big tradition and small tradition introduced by Robert Redfield. The results obtained from this study indicate that Manisrenggo which was originally a small area on the slopes of Mount Merapi where even the people know very little about Islam and their daily lives are still filled with activities that violate religious and community norms such as gambling, drinking, stealing, and others. After the arrival of Nahdlatul Ulama in Manisrenggo, the people became more acquainted with Islam and gradually began to know the teachings of Islam and leave their old culture. NU in Manisrenggo also plays an active role in social, religious, and educational fields which can be seen from the establishment of madrasas, Islamic boarding schools, TPAs, assemblies, mosques, prayer rooms, and various other activities with the community.

Abstract:
In this paper, an energy and area efficient carry select adder (CSLA) is proposed. To minimize the redundant logic operation of a regular CSLA, a dual carry adder cell is proposed. The proposed dual carry adder is composed of an XOR/XNOR cell and two pairs of sum-carry cells. Both CMOS logic and a transmission gate were applied to the dual carry adder cell to achieve fast and energy efficient operation. Eight-bit, 16b, and 32b square-root (SQRT) CSLAs based on the proposed dual carry adder were developed. The post-layout simulation based on a SMIC 55 nm process demonstrated that the proposed CSLAs reduced power consumption by 68.4–72.2% with a slight delay increase for different bit widths. As the dual carry adder had much fewer transistors than the two regular full adders, the area of the proposed CSLAs was reduced by 45.8–51.1%. The area-power-delay product of the proposed CSLA improved 5.1×–6.73× compared with the regular CSLA.

Abstract:
Abstract The radical HIV prison activist movement has always been, in practice, an abolitionist movement. Set in Philadelphia in the early 2000s, this article centers the relationships through which leaders of ACT UP Philadelphia, the Philadelphia County Coalition for Prison Health Care, TEACH Outside, and Project UNSHACKLE worked to transform the social conditions for which prisons have been posited as the solution and to create a prison-free future in real time. Its pages unfold a three-part methodological toolkit for HIV prevention justice. First, harm reduction demands that one show up and provide relief, no questions asked. Second, mutual aid grounds the forging of new social relations that are more survivable than those produced by HIV stigma, mass criminalization, and organized abandonment. Third, transformative justice offers both a vision and a practice for challenging criminalization in all its intimate, communal, and structural forms, and building a racially just and strategic HIV movement.

Abstract:
This paper makes two important contributions to the domain of self-timed computer arithmetic. Firstly, a gate-level synthesis of self-timed carry lookahead (CLA) adders based on the notion of section-carry is discussed. Three types of CLA adder architectures have been conceived and both homogeneous and heterogeneous delay-insensitive (DI) data encoding schemes are considered. In general, for higher-order additions, the self-timed CLA adder is found to result in reduced latency than the carry ripple version by 38.6%. However, the latter occupies less area and dissipates less power than the former by 37.8% and 17.4%, respectively. Secondly, a new concept of alias logic is introduced in this work which is useful for delay optimization of iterative circuit specifications — here; this concept is applied to effect latency reduction in self-timed CLA adders. By incorporating alias logic, the propagation delay of the intermediate carries in a CLA structure is further minimized to the tune of 27.2% on average, whilst accompanied by marginal area and power penalties of the order of just 2% and 1.5%, respectively.

Abstract:
In this paper an analysis of discrete-time convolution is performed to prove that the convolution sum is polynomial multiplication without carry, whether the sequences are finite or not, by using several examples to compare the results computed using the existing approaches to the polynomial multiplication approach presented here. In the design and analysis of signals and systems the concept of convolution is very important. While software tools are available for calculating convolution, for proper understanding it is important to learn now to calculate it by hand. To this end, several popular methods are available. The idea that the convolution sum is indeed polynomial multiplication without carry is demonstrated in this paper. The concept is further extended to deconvolution, N-point circular convolution and the Z-transform approach.

Abstract:
Synthesis for testability ensures that the synthesized circuit is testable by exploring the fundamental relationship between don't care and redundancy. With the exploration of the relationship, redundancy removal can be applied to improve the testability, reduce the area and improve the speed of a synthesized circuit. The test generation problems have been adequately solved, therefore an innovative testability synthesis strategy is necessary for achieving the maximum fault coverage and area reduction for maximum speed. This paper presents a testability synthesis methodology applicable to a top–down design method based on the identification and removal of redundant faults. Emphasis has been placed on the testability synthesis of a high-speed binary jumping carry adder. A synthesized 32-bit testable adder implemented by a 1.2 μm CMOS technology performs addition in 4.09 ns. Comparing with the original synthesized circuit, redundancy removal yields a 100% testable design with a 15% improvement in speed and a 25% reduction in area.

Abstract:
The design of a 32-bit carry-skip adder to achieve minimum delay is presented in this paper. A fast carry look-ahead logic using group generate and group propagate functions is used to speed up the performance of multiple stages of ripple carry adders. The group generate and group propagate functions are generated in parallel with the carry generation for each block. The optimum block sizes are decided by considering the critical path into account. The new architecture delivers the sum and carry outputs in lesser unit delays than existing carry-skip adders. The adder is implemented in 0.25 m CMOS technology at 3.3 V. The critical delay for the proposed adder is 3.4 nanoseconds. The simulation results show that the proposed adder is 18 faster than the current fastest carry-skip adder.

The object of study of this research is expenses classified as carryovers, which are part of the public budget, and they are a challenge for public managers. The objective of the research is to propose a control instrument applicable to the budgetary and financial execution of an IFES, considering the legislation applicable to the public budget, that assists the manager in controlling and reducing the effects of expenses classified as carryovers. Descriptive analysis and application of Pearson's correlation index were carried out on data taken from the Federal Government's Portal, referring to the five universities in the Center-West region between 2008 and 2016. It is concluded that: carryovers are present in all universities evaluated; on average, more than a quarter of the budget started is not finalized in the same year; unprocessed leftovers account for more than 90% of the total unpaid debts of universities. Furthermore, it is found that: there is a moderate negative correlation to budget execution and unbundling of UNB; there is a moderate positive correlation between the remainders to be paid and the financial execution of the budget in the UFGD and the UNB, and negative correlation in the UFG. The intervention proposal has two stages: the first one is the collection of information on the budgetary and financial situation of IFES, through a control sheet, and the second step is the application of the GUT matrix in the budget balances of the carryovers, to prioritize the closure of such expenses.

Abstract:

A focus group study was conducted to provide a base of knowledge related to the facilitators and inhibitors of appropriately trained nurses carrying the pager that notifies of the need for a medical emergency team (MET) response. The study site was in regional Queensland and seventeen Registered Nurses participated in the study. The concepts found in data progressively contributed to the development of four major themes: motivators to do the training, applying theory to practice, the MET experience and prioritising the pager. The data uncovered some information that has not previously been reported in the literature. Other findings offer support for evidence that already exists.

AbstractThus far, the book provides materials to carry out the whole process of observation, rationalization, and validation, as well as the necessary supporting processes (e.g., artifact design, data analysis, and reporting). At the end of the process, everything is documented in a comprehensive report or a paper, and the respective prototypes, datasets, and practical information are kept on file. An important question, however, remains: In the context of CCI and learning technology research, what are the main reasons for reviewers rejecting a paper or asking for revisions? Considerable effort goes into preparing a paper contribution for a respectable venue (journal or a conference). Researchers do not want to see their effort go to waste, especially if it involves a potentially valuable contribution that could bring credit to authors and fresh insights to readers. Drawing on our own experience and on various guides on how to review papers in CCI, learning technology, and neighboring fields, in this chapter we provide a list of criteria and pitfalls that are common to CCI and learning technology venues.

Abstract:
AbstractDiversification of crop rotations is considered as an option to increase the resilience of European crop production under climate change. Although crop rotation design and management has been identified as an important measure to adapt to and mitigate climate change, most studies on climate change impact or adaptation so far use single-year simulations and/or single crop assessments. Crop response to various management options within a growing season is generally taken into account by most crop models. However, if simulations neglect processes and fluxes between growing seasons and potential carry-over effects related to agronomic management, the long-term sustainability of adaptation and mitigation strategies cannot be properly evaluated. Therefore, the integrated assessment of impacts, adaptation and mitigation options under current and future climatic conditions requires a continuous long-term analysis of crop sequences to take into account carry-over effects as in real conditions. The present paper provides information on crop rotation aspects, which should be considered in modelling, presents the current state of modelling for climate impact assessment, address points of uncertainty and missing aspects in modelling and draws an outlook on potential future developments with special emphasis on crop rotations. In conclusion, crop models require suitable experimental data to parameterize additional crops, which were so far not sufficiently investigated to cope with multiple opportunities in crop rotations.

Abstract:
AbstractVerifying and explaining the behavior of neural networks is becoming increasingly important, especially when they are deployed in safety-critical applications. In this paper, we study verification and interpretability problems for Binarized Neural Networks (BNNs), the 1-bit quantization of general real-numbered neural networks. Our approach is to encode BNNs into Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs), which is done by exploiting the internal structure of the BNNs. In particular, we translate the input-output relation of blocks in BNNs to cardinality constraints which are in turn encoded by BDDs. Based on the encoding, we develop a quantitative framework for BNNs where precise and comprehensive analysis of BNNs can be performed. We demonstrate the application of our framework by providing quantitative robustness analysis and interpretability for BNNs. We implement a prototype tool and carry out extensive experiments, confirming the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

Abstract:
Japan's low-interest rates made the country's currency the primary funding currency in carry trade speculative strategies. Investors' activity in carry trade strategies has an enormous impact on the foreign exchange market volatility. A large inflow of capital to countries with higher interest rates contributes to their currency appreciation, and, in turn, a large outflow of capital from countries with a low-interest rate leads to a significant depreciation of their currency. However, in times of crisis and high uncertainty in the financial markets, investors massively withdraw from the carry trade. They sell financial assets purchased in a country with higher interest rates and then repay loans taken in a country with low-interest rates. A sudden increase in the supply of a country's currency with higher interest rates leads to its depreciation. On the other hand, the rise in demand for a country's currency with low-interest rates leads to its appreciation. The Japanese yen is one of the most popular funding currency in the carry trade and thus tends to appreciate during crisis periods. The paper aims to investigate the relationship between Japanese yen value and financial market uncertainty measured by the Volatility Index VIX and St. Louis FED Financial Stress Index. Based on the component generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model CGARCH with asymmetric threshold term, it has been shown that the increase in financial markets uncertainty contributes to significant appreciation of the Japanese yen against the US dollar. It implies that the Japanese currency is an example of a safe-haven currency and can be applied to hedge financial stress for global equity investors.

Abstract:
Gingivitis is one of the most common oral disorders and is caused by the accumulation of plaque in people with poor oral hygiene. The purpose of this study is to detect Staphylococcus aureus biofilm producers in cases of gingivitis and detect their biofilm genes. During the months of November 2018 and February 2019, a sample of fifty patients diagnosed clinically with gingivitis were collected from the laboratory of the Faculty of Dentistry at Hawler Medical University. Using the traditional culture method and vitek 2, eleven S. aureus bacteria isolates were identified. Using the Congo red agar method, biofilm detection was performed to test the ability to form biofilm. The S. aureus isolates were put through a series of tests to see if the genes responsible for the biofilm could be found (PCR). Biofilm formation method of detection using Congo red agar showed that 10 (90.1%) of S. aureus were biofilm positive and one 1 (9.1%) were biofilm negative. As well as the results of molecular analysis by using PCR showed that isolated S. aureus were carried biofilm genes icaC (100%), icaD (100%), cna (90.9%) and fnba (100%). Gingivitis is one of the most common oral diseases in our area, and this research found that the majority of S. aureus isolates carry the icaC, icaD, cna, and fnba Biofilm genes.

Abstract:
During several decades, engineering was considered a morally and ethically neutral profession. Therefore, it was assumed that reflections about ethics and moral were not necessary. Consequently, questions have been outlined to include ethics in engineering curricula. These questions have been developed slowly in the last decades with the imperative need of designing an ethical framework to inform technical decisions that engineers make in project management. Associated with this issue, some curricular guidance have been found. The first one is based on the educational framework for curricular design named CDIO (conceive, design, implement, operate). CDIO initiative establishes that in the curriculum should be explicit, the promotion of ethics, social responsibility, integrity, professional behavior, staying current on the world of engineering, a commitment to work embracing equity, diversity, and teamwork. The second guidance refers to the field of accreditation board – ABET. ABET declares that students are expected to know and be able to do some knowledge, skills, and behaviors associated to their progress in the program. In particular, an expected student outcome is related to the ability for recognizing ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering context and make informed judgments considering global, economic, environmental, and societal backgrounds. Previous studies guide the “ought to” mode curricula related to ethics. Literature has acknowledged several challenges to carry out that mode: unsystematic implementation of ethics, the low weight given to this subject in the curriculum, the low familiarity with the theoretical knowledge in ethics, instructors’ difficulties to structure a comprehensive, theoretical and practical framework, among others. Considering this background, the School of Engineering at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (PUJ) has made curricular reflections for designing a pedagogical strategy focused on ethics and social responsibility. This strategy involves several milestones, such as: shared reflections between the faculty of Engineering and the Center of Teological Formation to design educational activities, a systematic “roadmap” to approach ethics issues in the program, the strengthening of ethics reflections in mandatory disciplinary courses, the inclusion of voluntary workshops to explore and identify values among students, the promotion of ethics and social and professional responsibilities in designing engineering projects, and the proposal of quantitative and qualitative measures to reflect about students’ progress in the field of moral and ethics. In this context, the paper introduces some literature considerations about ethics in engineering education. Then, it presents the conceptual and methodological framework that underlies the pedagogical strategy. After that, the designed strategy is described. Finally, some reflections about the implementation and future work are discussed.

Abstract:
This paper presents an ongoing project which enhances the design and implementation of the automatic classifier for classifying the Web pages, known as Automatic Classification Engine (ACE). The enhancement focuses on the use of the ontologies of the domains to carry out classification. To articulate the underlying theories of an ontology, the meaning of a concept, a terminology and a gestalt instance is elucidated. The enhancement results in better classification in terms of accuracy.

Abstract:
The issue of this paper is the use of perceptual evaluations of products as a simulation platform for improving decision making in the design process of a new product. In previous work, we proposed bayesian kansei models using unsupervised learning of relationship between perceptual evaluation of a family of similar products and technical characteristics of these products. We showed the main advantages of such bayesian models compared to other techniques in that they are not opaque to the designer and they can be easily used in compound analysis/synthesis scenarios. The objective of this paper is to show the limits of such unsupervised bayesian kansei models and to propose the use of complementary supervised bayesian kansei models. We show that these models are more accurate to carry out a local optimization of a design.

Full text
Abstract:
Accurate prediction of the mass flow rate through labyrinth seals is extremely important especially for rotodynamic analysis of turbomachinery. The integral control volume based rotodynamic coefficient prediction programs are no more accurate than the accuracy of the leakage mass flow rate. A leakage flow equation can be developed by comparing the seal to a series of orifices and cavities. An equation of this type usually contains a discharge coefficient and a carry-over coefficient. The carry-over coefficient represents the effectiveness of each cavity to dissipate the kinetic energy entering the cavity and has an effect upon the value of the discharge coefficient for the constriction following that cavity. Therefore, an effective model for the carry-over coefficient must be developed before a leakage model can be obtained. This paper investigates how flow conditions and geometry variations for a smooth shaft operating in straight though tooth on stator rectangular cavity labyrinth seals affect the value of the carry-over coefficient for incompressible flow. The effect of Reynolds number, pressure ratio, clearance, number of teeth and shaft speed are considered using computational fluid dynamics. It was found that Reynolds number and clearance to pitch ratio have a major influence on the carry-over coefficient. Models for the same were developed for a generic rectangular tooth on stator labyrinth seal. The carry-over coefficient varied from 1.0 at the lowest clearance/pitch ratio and Reynolds numbers to 1.8 for the largest clearance/pitch ratio and Reynolds number considered. Future studies will investigate how the discharge coefficient is dependent upon the same flow and geometry conditions as well as the carry-over coefficient in order to obtain a complete leakage model.

In ASME-JSME-KSME 2019 8th Joint Fluids Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/ajkfluids2019-4735.

Abstract:
Abstract Gas Carry-Under (GCU) is one of the two undesirable phenomena that occur in the GLCC©,1 (Gas-Liquid Cylindrical Cyclone) separators when it operates even within the Operational Envelope (OPEN). Earlier studies have shown that maintaining a liquid level below the inlet of the GLCC under control configuration affects the GCU in GLCC. It has been identified that the tangential wall jet is the cause of gas entrainment within the GLCC and has been understood to change with liquid level maintained at the inlet. Also, it has been theorized that effective formation of the vortex formed in the lower part of the GLCC, or a stable gas core enhances the separation of gas entrained in the liquid. At present, there is no mechanistic model which captures these complex physical phenomena in the GLCC. This paper presents a newly developed mechanistic model which can predict the GCU for different flow conditions, fluid properties, and various liquid levels. The proposed model captures the various physical phenomena namely: saturated flow at the inlet, tangential wall jet phenomena, gas entrainment and vortex flow that results in separation of gas. The developed model has been compared with the extensive experimental data and is said to be in good agreement.

Full text
Abstract:
Among the various nonbinary number systems introduced for solving the bottleneck of carry propagation, modified signed-digit (MSD) arithmetic1 appears to be the most promising because it provides parallel, carry-free addition and borrow-free subtraction with storage complexity proportional to the length of the bit string. In MSD carry-free addition schemes, the pair of numbers to be added is first converted into an intermediate pair such that the addition of the latter pair will not generate any carry. In this paper, we extend the higher-order symbolic substitution (SS) technique to incorporate the MSD numbers. The propos d method ensures that both addition and sub traction operations can be implemened in only two steps, irrespective of the number of bits to be processed, thus saving a tremendous amount of computation time. Further, a new set of carry-free SS rules that are based upon checking a pair of reference bits from the next-lower-order bit position is derived. Finally, a content-addressable memory based optical implementation for the proposed scheme is also suggested.

Abstract:
Modified signed-digit binary numbers have demonstrated the promise of carry-free addition. In this method, the to-be-added pair of numbers are mapped into an intermediate pair of numbers in such a way that when the latter numbers are added, they do not result in carry generation. The corresponding recognition and substitution operations, referred to as symbolic substitution, can be performed in parallel at all digit positions; thus, the method fits elegantly with optical computing architecture. Three-step, two- step, and single step1,2 carry-free addition based on optical symbolic substitution schemes have already been worked out for the binary system. In this paper, we extend the carry-free addition and borrow-free subtraction scheme to accommodate signed-digit trinary numbers by deriving the necessary substitution rules to perform addition/sub- traction in two steps. A number of possible sets of rules exist for addition and subtraction. The reduced minterms are derived for a possible two-or three-step holographic content addressable memory implementation.1,2

Abstract:
Citizen and policy groups address environmental challenges in the Sahel, but rarely together. In Sahelian West Africa, including in Mauritania, Senegal, and Mali, artists and citizens have used protest art to make their voices heard, in contexts where this can carry risks of conflict with authorities. Artists sometimes act as engaged citizens, who can draw on their artistic talents to communicate a message. This paper explores how far art may be used as a tool for dialogue between different groups on environmental concerns in the Western Sahel.

Abstract:
The system of programs described in this paper is concerned with estimating the damage ensuing from exposure of specimens in dry and humid atmospheres to UV and visible radiation covering the solar range. Damage is monitored quantitatively by changes in IR spectra. The dose is estimated from UV spectra of the lamps and the interference filters (used to isolate a particular wavelength range). The dosage is estimated from the dose and the UV absorption of the specimens themselves. These programs allow rapid estimation of dosage and damage from regions of data, and manipulation and processing of the massive amounts of data required to carry out such comprehensive tests in a complete yet user-friendly manner.

Abstract:
Public-private partnerships (PPPs) have been used to address the need for the implementation of huge investment programs and to bridge the infrastructure gap that exists in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. As is explained throughout this paper, under certain circumstances, PPPs represent an important tool to help governments implement their investment programs, thereby benefiting not only from private investment (which often includes foreign investment) but also from the various advantages that are typically associated with the PPP model. However, the need to secure financing for investment needs, especially in a situation of scarce public resources and fiscal constraints, should not be the only reason for choosing the PPP model. The objective of this paper is to highlight that the PPP model can be a valuable tool for undertaking public projects in an efficient and innovative manner and that it can provide more efficient and innovative public services in certain circumstances as well. In addition, when correctly used, it can generate public savings and create the fiscal space that LAC countries need to carry out their investments.

Abstract:
This working paper aims to situate our research project within the various debates around resilience. It advocates a historical, cultural and plural approach to understanding how communities develop and share resilient practices in contexts of multiple and protracted crises. A focus on ‘vernacular’ resilience, as embedded in social practices and cultural repertoires, is important since conventional approaches to resilience seem to have overlooked how locally embedded forms of resilience are socially constructed historically. Our approach results from a combination of two observations. Firstly, conventional approaches to resilience in development, humanitarian and peace studies carry the limitations of their own epistemic assumptions – notably the fact that they have generic conceptions of what constitutes resilience. Secondly, these approaches are often ahistorical and neglect the temporal and intergenerational dimensions of repertoires of resilience. In addition to observable social practices, culture and history are crucial in understanding the ways in which vernacular and networked knowledge operates.

Abstract:
The process of mastering, systematizing and automatizing systems language skills occupies a key place in the theory and practice of teaching foreign languages and cultures. Following the main trends of modern applied linguistics in the field of multilingual research, we hypothesize the advisability of using the lexical approach in mastering the entire complex of systems skills (grammar, vocabulary, phonology, functions, discourse) in students receiving multilingual education at higher educational institutions. In order to theoretically substantiate the hypothesis, the authors carry out structural, semantic, and phonological analysis of the main lexical units (collocations). After this, linguodidactic analysis of students’ hypothetical problems and, as a result, problems related to the teaching of relevant linguistic and axiological features is carried out. At the final stage of the paper, a list of possible outcomes from the indicated linguistic and methodological problematic situations is given. This article is the first in the cycle of linguodidactic studies of the features of learning and teaching systems language skills in a multilingual educational space.

Abstract:
The relevance of these studies was due to the need to clarify the biogeochemical characteristics of woody plant species that grow naturally on devastated lands. The object of this paper: to carry out a comparative analysis of macro nutrients and heavy metals contents in the leaves of trees spontaneously sprouting on the devastated lands at the Kryvyi Rih District. This research was performed at Petrovsky waste rock dump, the Central part of the Kryvyi Rih iron-ore & metallurgical district (Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine). The macronutrients (K, Ca, Mg, P and S) and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd) contents in the leaves of three species of the trees (Ash-leaved Maple Acer negundo L., Silver Birch Betula pendula Roth. and Black Locust Robinia pseudoacacia L.) that were collected on devastated lands were assessed. It was established that trees which grow on the Petrovsky dump take place under evident shortage of nutrients (especially K and P) and excess of metals (especially Fe, Mn and Zn). Taking into account the revealed values of macronutrients optimal concentrations and revealed the heavy metals lowest content in the leaves, we assume that Ash-leaved maple and Black locust (compared to the Silver Birch) are more resistant to the geochemical conditions of devastated lands.

Abstract:
Over the last two decades undergraduate students have been encouraged to problem solve in ‘the real world’ in order to construct their own subject knowledge. This generally means that students are required to carry out research in their disciplines, a process which inevitably leads to the production of quantities of data. Once their findings are reported back to faculty and have been graded, they are largely ignored, as they are ‘only’ the product of undergraduate research. However, since 2000 there has been a move to bring this type of work into the open through undergraduate research conferences in order to benefit both the students and their institutions. Nevertheless, except for a few publications within medical teaching, faculty themselves have not widely used this data for their own research, perhaps fearing its potential lack of authenticity or credibility. This paper explores a case study to examine the validity and reliability of students’ findings and considers whether the observations obtained by students can or should be made into academic publications by staff. This study comprised four cohorts, totaling 109 second-year undergraduate automotive students, who had made repeat visits to a number of automotive workshops and reviewed the workshops’ activities with a particular focus on customer service, health and safety, and waste management. Analysis of the top 25% of students’ reports revealed that a number of compliance failures were appearing on such a regular basis that these findings should be brought to the attention of the automotive industry. The paper concludes with a recommendation that under carefully controlled conditions, academics should draw on this hitherto ignored seam of research data.
