Abstract:
The ultraprecision grinding of different tungsten carbide-cobalt microstructures (WC-Co) were investigated. The motivation for this study is the materials high hardness and potential application for micromolds. These materials have been used as optical inserts in glass injection molding processes for optical and electric devices, due to their excellent combination of high hardness, ductility and fracture toughness. Tungsten carbide samples were subjected to tests to determine the correlation between cutting parameters and microstructures to achieve the ductile regime of material removal. Polished surfaces of carbide samples were indented using varying loads to evaluate the microcracks formation. The machining tests were conducted using an ultraprecision grinding and A V-shaped metal-bond was used. Surface roughness was investigated as functions of the grinding conditions by means Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The tangential force was measured using a piezoelectric dynamometer to estimate the grinding zone temperature. The results indicate that structural parameters (grain size and cobalt content) and cutting parameters have a significant influence on surface roughness, micro-hardness and grinding zone temperature for tungsten carbide-cobalt alloys.Tungsten carbide-cobalt samples with the larger grain size presented lower surface finish results and high grinding temperatures. The feed rate (Vf) showed greater influence that the in-feed (ap). The grinding zone temperature and the hardness are increased when speed rate is reduced. However, it was found that the highest temperature achieved did not reach a critical temperature for phase transformation. Some cutting parameters combined with structural parameters lead to ductile mode grinding mechanism, and as consequence, high optical quality surfaces are obtained. The micro-hardness of layer is extremely influenced by cobalt content and speed rate. Lower feed rate tends to increase the micro-hardness up to 200 kgf/mm2, suggesting that the compressive stress occurs. Considering the results presented it is believed that the Ultraprecision grinding showed to be a viable option for the fabrication of components made of tungsten carbide-cobalt with nanometer surface finish possibly eliminating traditional optical manufacturing processes such as lapping and polishing.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech(Education))--Cape Technikon, Cape Town,1998
This study investigates the industry component of cooperative education programmes in Clothing as offered by the Clothing Department at the Cape Technikon relevant to the Western Cape. The character and nature of co-operative education came under general scrutiny. The structure of any cooperative educational program consists of two components; the academic and the industry component. Within this structure, a few attendance patterns are used to employ students in industry. This employment of students bridges the gap between the academic component and practice. The co-ordinator of co-operative education is responsible for the supervision over and application of specific tasks to ensure the successful completion of the industry component. The professional tasks include the identification and recruiting of workstations, the placement of students, the orientation of both the employer and student, the monitoring of the students' progress, as well as the evaluation of the students' work. The important role of the advisory committee cannot be underestimated in order to ensure successful completion of the co-operative educational programs. It should be properly constituted with specific functions with regards to the industry component. A qualitative study was undertaken to describe the course of the current industry experience in Clothing at the Cape Technikon. Discussion forums, personal interviews and a literature study serve as the foundation of this investigation.

Abstract:
Background: The World Health Organization defines probiotics as ‘live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit to the host’. Traditionally, probiotic microorganisms have been used to prevent or treat gastrointestinal tract diseases. In the last 15 years, there has been increasing interest of a possible probiotic impact on the oral microbiota and dental caries. Dental caries is a multifactorial disease, and the causative factor in the oral microbiota includes a shift from a balanced microflora to a microflora that includes more aciduric species such as mutans streptococci (MS), non-mutans streptococci, and Actinomyces. MS is considered an opportunistic pathogen although several other bacteria also contribute to the disease. Early acquisition of MS is associated with early development of caries; therefore a desirable complement to other prophylactic measures would be a MS colonization inhibitor. Objective: To better understand how selected strains of probiotic lactobacilli interact with MS in vitro and in vivo and to study the impact of probiotic lactobacilli on caries development during childhood. Material and methods: The in vitro properties of probiotic lactobacilli were studied with regard to (i) acid production from sugars and sugar alcohols, (ii) growth inhibition capacity on clinical isolates and reference strains of MS as well as Candida albicans and (iii) the capacity to co-aggregate with MS. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) tested the short-term effect of intervention with two Lactobacillus reuteri strains on MS, which was evaluated after treatment with chlorhexidine. The re-growth patterns of MS and 19 other selected strains were also evaluated. In the second clinical study  we investigated the long-term effect on MS prevalence and dental caries after an intervention with Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei F19 (LF19) between 4 and 13 months of age. Results: The results from the in vitro testing showed that strains of probiotic lactobacilli differed in their fermentation patterns, inhibition capacity and their capacity to co-aggregate, which should be kept in mind in the translation to clinical research. The clinical study on short-term effects of two L. reuteri strains on MS and other oral strains showed no effect on re-growth patterns after intervention. The clinical study on long-term effects of LF19 showed no effect on the prevalence of MS. Furthermore, the clinical follow-up at 9 years of age showed no differences in either decayed, missing, and filled surface (dmfs) or DMFS between the probiotic and placebo groups. Evaluation of saliva samples showed no signs of oral colonization with LF19 in the study group. Conclusion: The in vitro testing showed potentials of the selected probiotic Lactobacillus strains for interference with MS and C. albicans. The results from the clinical studies showed no such effect on MS or dental caries. Evidence regarding the effectiveness of specific probiotic applications in the prevention of dental caries is limited and does not allow for conclusions concerning the use of probiotic bacteria as a preventive measure.

Abstract:
Persistent calls to the field of engineering education to help develop diverse, well-prepared engineers for the STEM workforce have fostered collaborations across university and industry stakeholders. As stakeholders focus efforts on supporting student persistence at several critical junctures, there has been a renewed interest in supporting the school-to-workforce transition for engineering graduates. With calls to develop a more tech-savvy workforce, innovative approaches to supporting and preparing students to enter the workforce have become even more necessary; thus it is important to understand how university- industry partnerships generate experiences that contribute to students' eventual workforce entry. The structure of the Co-op Development Program and the perspective of eight former CDP participants addressed how learning experiences shaped the career decisions of engineering participants immediately following graduation. A qualitative single case study approach was used and Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) guided the study. Major contributions of this study include extending the analytic generalizability of Social Cognitive Career Theory, creating operationalized definitions of learning experiences embedded within that framework, and linking those experiences to how students' beliefs were shaped on their pathway to an early career within engineering industry. The themes identified in this study can help CDP managers and university stakeholders better support co-op participants and potentially allocate resources that will serve as the basis for future co-op design recommendations. Stakeholders may also use findings to promote the role of university and industry partnerships in supporting the student workforce transition. Future researchers may extend the study design across multiple cases and leverage recommendations for qualitative and quantitative investigations to address some of the limitations embedded within this research design and further contribute to the discussion of preparing students for professional work environments through university-industry partnerships. Ultimately, findings of this study give voice to the student partner in university-industry partnerships as themes identified in this study help CDP managers and university stakeholders to establish interventions and serve as the basis for future co-op design recommendations.

Sulfur compounds emissions have been, on the late years, subject to more severe environmental laws due to its impact on the environment (causing the acid rain phenomena) and on human health. It has also been object of much attention from the refiners worldwide due to its relationship with equipment?s life, which is decreased by corrosion, and also with products? quality, as the later may have its color, smell and stability altered by the presence of such compounds. Sulfur removal can be carried out by hydrotreating (HDT) which is a catalytic process. Catalysts for HDS are traditionally based on Co(Ni)-Mo(W)/Al2O3. However, in face of the increased contaminants? content on crude oil, and stricter legislation on emissions, the development of new, more active and efficient catalysts is pressing. Carbides of refractory material have been identified as potential materials for this use. The addition of a second metal to carbides may enhance catalytic activities by increasing the density of active sites. In the present thesis Mo2C with Co addition was produced in a fixed bed reactor via gas-solid reaction of CH4 (5%) and H2(95%) with a precursor made of a mix of ammonium heptamolybdate [(NH4)6[Mo7O24].4H2O] and cobalt nitrate[Co(NO3)2.6H2O] at stoichiometric amounts. Precursors? where analyzed by XRF, XRD, SEM and TG/DTA. Carboreduction reactions were carried out at 700 and 750?C with two cobalt compositions (2,5 and 5%). Reaction?s products were characterized by XRF, XRD, SEM, TOC, BET and laser granulometry. It was possible to obtain Mo2C with 2,5 and 5% cobalt addition as a single phase at 750?C with nanoscale crystallite sizes. At 700?C, however, both MoO2 and Mo2C phases were found by XRD. No Co containing phases were found by XRD. XRF, however, confirmed the intended Co content added. SEM images confirmed XRD data. The increase on Co content promoted a more severe agglomeration of the produced powder. The same effect was noted when the reaction temperature was increased. The powder synthesized at 750?C with 2,5% Co addition TOC analysis indicated the complete conversion from oxide material to carbide, with a 8,9% free carbon production. The powder produced at this temperature with 5% Co addition was only partially converted (86%)

Composites based on alumina (Al2O3), tungsten carbide (WC) and cobalt (Co) exhibit specific properties such as low density, high oxidation resistance, high melting point and high chemical inertia. That composite shows to be a promising material for application in various fields of engineering. In this work, the mechanical properties of the composite (Al2O3 ? WC ? Co), particularly density and hardness, were evaluated according to the effects of the variables of powder processing parameters, green compact and sintered. Powder composites with the composition of 80 wt% Al2O3, 18 wt% WC and 2 wt% Co were processed by high energy ball milling in a planetary mill for 50 hours as well as mixed by manual mixing in a glass vessel with the same proportion. Samples were collected (2, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 hours) during the milling process. Then, the powders were compacted in a cylindrical die with 5 mm in diameter in a uniaxial press with pressures of 200 and 400 MPa. The sintering was in two stages: first, the solid phase sintering was performed at 1126 and 1300 ?C for 1 hour with a heating rate of 10 ?C/min in a resistive furnace under argon atmosphere for green samples compacted in 200 and 400 MPa; the second sintering was performed on dilatometer in solid phase at 1300 ?C for green sample compacted in 200 MPa, another sintering also was performed on dilatometer, this time in liquid phase at 1550 ?C for green samples compacted in 200 and 400 MPa, with the same parameters used in resistive furnace. The raw materials were characterized by X ? ray diffraction (XRD), X ? ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and laser particlemeter. The sintered samples were subjected to microhardness testing. The results showed that high energy milling achieved to the objectives regarding the particle size and the dispersion of composite phases. However, the hardness did not achieve to significant results, this is an indication that the composite has low fracture toughness.

Abstract:
Experiential opportunities at the secondary level give students the 'intimate and necessary relation between the processes of actual experience and education' (Dewey, 1938, p. 19-20). Career and Technical Education classes (CTE) and co-curricular experiences, one type of experiential learning, underpin and cultivate student curiosity and often channel interests into STEM-related post-secondary disciplines and career choices. There is little existent research on the characteristics of exemplary experiential learning opportunities and the impact on stakeholders. This study is intended to identify the qualities and characteristics of an exemplary secondary experience through the lived experiences of the stakeholders; students, STEM-related teachers, and CTE/STEM Administrators. A qualitative research design was used to examine characteristics and implications for students of four STEM-related programs throughout Virginia. Conclusions from the study include fundamental principles for providing exemplary experiential STEM-related learning opportunities. These principles include: providing hands-on, real world learning opportunities for students, providing learning opportunities that will enhance student ownership in their learning, providing unique and comprehensive career exploration opportunities for students, providing a schedule for teachers that will give them time to plan, deliver, and manage exemplary experiential learning opportunities, providing continual teacher and administrator in-service training relative to planning and implementing exemplary experiential learning opportunities, investing appropriate funds for providing exemplary experiential learning opportunities. Establishing and maintaining active partnerships with business/industry and colleges/universities, and maintaining active advisory communities, providing appropriate staff to support the provision of exemplary experiential learning opportunities is needed. The need for adequate funding, improving perception of CTE and STEM programs, and small class sizes was also recommended.

Abstract:
Career and technical education (CTE) is a set of career-focused courses and pathways that provide students with technical skills and knowledge which can lead to future employment and postsecondary education. Concentration in a career and technical education pathway while still in high school supports job exploration for school-age youth and is correlated with higher levels of full-time employment after high school. This is especially true for students with disabilities. Special Education (SPED) is the educational support system for students with disabilities. CTE and SPED professionals have struggled to effectively collaborate to serve students with disabilities. Infrequent and inconsistent communication between CTE and SPED professionals as well as limited time and opportunities are barriers to effective collaboration between these professional groups. Joint training with SPED and CTE teachers may be a crucial component to a successful collaboration process. The purpose of this research is to explore the effect of joint training and collaborative teaming with CTE and SPED professionals on their knowledge and attitudes of collaboration in serving students with disabilities. The activities in this research study involved educating SPED and CTE professionals in a joint training on working together to effectively serve students with disabilities. Time for collaborative teaming and strategizing between SPED and CTE professionals was included in the training. Knowledge and attitudes were measured before and after the training. This study demonstrated that joint training and collaborative teaming with CTE and SPED professionals increased knowledge of both disciplines and improved attitudes about collaboration between disciplines. Improved knowledge and attitudes toward collaboration resulted from professionals creating a sense of network and community as they worked in interdisciplinary teams.

Abstract:
Background: The Emergency Department (ED) is often viewed as an inappropriate environment for terminally ill older patients; however, palliative admissions to the ED continue to occur. Despite an increased focus on end of life and palliative care services, the role of the ED has generally been neglected in the UK. Aim and Methodology: This study used the participatory action research methodology, Experience-based Co-design to identify concerns and solutions to improve experiences of palliative care provision in the ED for older patients (65+), their carers and staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital NHS Foundation Trust ED. Methods: Experiential narrative data were gathered using audio and filmed interviews, and analysed using a thematic framework to identify the main challenges. Findings were validated by the staff and patient/carer groups, who selected four improvements priorities (IP) each (eight in total). Findings, in the format of a patient/carer film and a staff presentation were shared at a co-design event which enabled participants to collaboratively select shared IPs and began to redesign applicable elements of the service. The study was enhanced by findings from a data collection field trip to a geriatric-only ED at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Using interviews and observation additional background contextual data on palliative care coding and ED impact on the patient journey were identified. Findings: The four staff IPs were: ‘helping them [patients and carers] find their way’, ‘being informed and informing them [patients and carers]’, ‘seeing the person in the patient’, and ‘expectations of the care we can give’. Patient and carer IPs were similar: ‘finding our way’, ‘knowing what’s happening’, ‘seeing the person in the patient’, and ‘expectations of care’. The co-design event explored these issues and the group began to develop plans to improve them. Immediate strategies aimed to: improve self-management and ownership, develop ED-based palliative care pathways and staff training, create dedicated palliative care space in the ED, improve IT and databases, improve patient experience, and share the learning of the study. Impact: Early study impact includes palliative care referral improvements, introducing routine ED visits by the palliative care team, development on palliative care pathway processes in the ED, development of mandatory palliative care training in the ED which includes the patient/carer film. Based on feedback from the co-design event, the film was expanded to include the staff experience as well.

Laruelle, Sophie. "Analyse d'Algorithmes Stochastiques Appliqués à la Finance." Phd thesis, Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris VI, 2011. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00652128.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between gender role, co-dependency and career maturity in high school students. Questionnaire survey method was used to collect data from 852 public high school students in Taipei. Four research instruments were used in this study, including personal background information, gender role scale, co-dependency scale and career maturity scale. The major findings were as follows: 1.Both in male and female, the “undifferentiated” had the highest percentage, followed by “androgynous”. 2.Female high school students had higher “identified caretaking activities” than male students. “Masculine” and “feminine” had no significant difference in all aspect of “career maturity”. 3.Female high school students had higher “career development of cognitive” than male students. The third-year students had higher “career development of cognitive” than the first-year students, and had higher “career planning attitude” than first/second-year students. 4.In whole career maturity, including “career development of cognitive” and “career planning attitude”, “androgynous” had the highest impact, and “masculine” and “feminine” are both higher than “undifferentiated”. 5.The “identified caretaking activities” can both effectively predict “career development of cognitive” and “career planning attitude”, and “attempts to derive a sense of purpose through relationships” can also predict “career planning attitude”. 6.The “gender role” can both effectively predict “career development of cognitive” and “career planning attitude”, and “androgynous” had the highest predictive power. Based on the research results, further suggestions and discussions were made and future recommendations were also proposed.

Abstract:
This study focused on the responses of the main role players in a Work Experience Programme which is offered as a component of Grade 11 Career Education at Hillcrest High School. The aim was to describe, evaluate and optimise the programme. The theory and literature on career development and work experience was reviewed in order to establish what programmes, methods and approaches are currently being used internationally and in South Africa. Issues related to work experience were explored with a view to evaluate whether the programme undertaken could enhance the career decision making of Grade 11 pupils. A qualitative, participatory research method was applied. The action research design chosen enabled the researcher to collect data over a period of eight months while interacting 'with her subjects as their teacher counsellor. The design, application, analysis of findings and limitations of the research study are described and recorded. The findings indicated that the programme was regarded as a positive experience by the majority of pupils. It was possible to make recommendations from the findings for wider application of such a programme.

Abstract:
M.Phil.
Although a great deal of research has been conducted on diversity management in South Africa, very little of this research has focused on age diversity within interactive information societies such as libraries in South Africa. This study will focus specifically on academic libraries. It is also clear that most of the research regarding age diversity within Academic Information Services (AIS) has focused on managing the difference in ages between library patrons and library staff members. Very little of the research is devoted to age diversity between co-workers, and even less research has been conducted regarding Cuspers as a generational cohort within the library environment. This study is aimed at investigating age diversity within AIS in South Africa in relation to its effect on work, work performance and co-worker relationships. It is also aimed at encouraging organisations, and specifically AIS, to take cognisance of the current age demographic of their libraries and to develop and implement not only succession planning policies, but also relevant recruitment and retention policies in order to avoid employee and leadership vacuums. The research findings of this study are relevant as they give organisations in general, and specifically AIS within higher education institutions (HEI), a point of reference to guide the formulation of recruitment and employment policies that would appeal to the values and preferences of younger generational cohorts currently under-represented in these organisations. In addition, this study is of value with regard to the formulation of succession policies focused on the planning and training of new middle and top management staff members in order to improve current succession policies and plans.
