Abstract:

In July 1947, the Cuban Author Alejo Carpentier traveled from his home in caracas to the sparsely inhabited interior of venezuela, visiting the country's tropical forests and its great plains. At the time, Carpentier was known principally as a music critic and newspaper columnist for El Nacional in Venezuela and Carteles in Cuba; he had yet to publish El reino de este mundo (The Kingdom of This World; 1949), which would launch his career as a novelist and earn him international renown. Carpentier later wrote a novel about a trip much like the one he took in 1947. In the now-canonical Los pasos perdidos (The Lost Steps; 1953), a failed composer finds inspiration by traveling from a cosmopolitan city to the tropical forests of South America. Carpentier's creativity was similarly sparked by his trip to the Venezuelan wilderness, as his travel diary Notas del viaje a la Gran Sabana (Notes on the Trip to the Great Savannah) makes clear. Notas is the only contemporary account of the journey written by Carpentier, who later made contradictory statements about the details and even the number of trips he took. Beyond its documentary value, the travel diary reveals that Carpentier's experience was deeply enmeshed with his readings, a characteristic that also marks the narrator-protagonist of Los pasos perdidos. Moreover, Notas is of broad ecocritical and historical significance because it makes clear the extent to which the forests and plains of South America were changing during Venezuela's boom in oil drilling and gold mining in the 1940s. Inspired by what he witnessed in Venezuela, Carpentier created the central drama of Los pasos perdidos out of his protagonist's desire to inhabit what the author called the “mundo del Genesis” (“world of Genesis”) at a time when extractive industries were rapidly transforming the economies, ecologies, and societies of the region (“La Gran Sabana” 32).

Abstract:

Alejo Carpentier was a well-known author of Latin American Literature of twentieth century. Explosion in a Cathedral, (El siglo de las luces, 1962) has disclosed the author’s approach, who knew how to take advantages of the chance. This is considered Carpentier’s most effective historical achievement that revealed his destiny accidently. The novel is based on chronicle of French revolution in different circumstances and revealed the French history with winning destiny. It portrays the revolutionary hurdles, which were adopted from the other historians, who wrote about revolutions. Ultimately, Carpentier became successful to assemble immense information, dates and several documents; which were required to write the history of French revolution. The novel presents rare figures as characters without giving more importance to them. Some critics argued that it is characters who are more influenced with European modernity less than Latin America. The novel is about French revolution that is depicted through the character Victor Huggies and Esteban. The French revolution was fought twice as land and water with great efforts. The novel leaves it’s most noteworthy mark in the field of history.

ResumoEste artigo analisa a trajetória política, intelectual e literária do escritor cubano Alejo Carpentier (1904-1980). Considerando alguns dos seus dados biográficos, a ideia é compreender como, em suas obras iniciais, se articula um projeto narrativo de descrição do continente americano. Fortemente influenciado pelas vanguardas europeias do pós-guerra, Carpentier deu início à busca de uma identidade americana através da literatura. Ao analisar as obras Visión de América, El reino de este mundo e Los pasos perdidos, a intenção do artigo é compreender os protocolos através dos quais o autor empreende a busca por aquilo que ele classificou como o “real maravilhoso americano”. O argumento central da análise é pensar como essa lógica discursiva de Carpentier dialoga diretamente com padrões narrativos europeus sobre a América.Palavras-chave: América; literatura hispano-americana; realismo mágico; Alejo Carpentier.

Abstract:

El presente estudio ofrece puntos de comparación y contraste entre la mirada insular caribeña del artista y autor exiliado Eugenio F. Granell y la tesis identitaria sobre América Latina del escritor y musicólogo Alejo Carpentier. En su ensayo “Lo real maravilloso de América”, Carpentier denunciaba la falsa representación de América Latina por parte de los seguidores de la corriente surrealista que -como André Breton y Granell en su libro Isla cofre mítico- fueron arrastrados al nuevo continente por las guerras en Europa. El interrogante de quién podría adjudicarse el legítimo papel de representante de América, nos hace cuestionar si realmente Carpentier, de origen europeo y formado intelectualmente en París, logró plasmar la autenticidad americana a la que aspiraba en su ensayo. Partiendo de esta duda, el presente estudio girará en torno a las siguientes preguntas: ¿en qué diferían el acercamiento insular de Granell y los argumentos de los que se sirvió Carpentier para representar el paisaje de América Latina? ¿A qué modelos recurrieron ambos escritores y qué problemas presentaban estas dos representaciones del escenario americano? Y, finalmente, ¿se podría interpretar Isla cofre mítico como una respuesta o reacción a las críticas hacia la corriente surrealista que aparecen en el ensayo de Carpentier?

En un artículo de 1927, el novelista cubano Alejo Carpentier, entonces todavía poco conocido, planteaba con una metáfora afectiva el mayor peligro, a su juicio, de las relaciones culturales entre España y Latinoamérica. Carpentier trataba de separar claramente las dos orillas del Atlántico en el terreno cultural y evitar cualquier nueva subordinación a la metrópoli. La reacción de Carpentier venía a denunciar rotundamente las pretensiones de algunos intelectuales de Madrid de proponer a la capital de España como centro de la cultura hispánica, desplazando a un segundo plano el tradicional encanto sensual y vanguardista de París.

Abstract:

Uno de los aspectos más importantes de la narrativa de Alejo Carpentier es el estudio del tiempo. El interés por la estructura espacio-temporal narrativa proviene a veces de su preocupación filosófica; en otros casos la trata como uno de los recursos técnicos. En su empeño de romper con el sistema de transcurso cronológico Carpentier ha logrado importantes renovaciones, también en el cuento Semejante a la noche (1952). Su estructura espacio-temporal, además presentada gráficamente, representa el tema del presente artículo. Con este cuento Carpentier ha añadido a la amplia gama de las técnicas narrativas una posibilidad íntegramente nueva.

Abstract:

Following a legacy of four and a half centuries of literature written by foreign travelers landing on Haiti’s shores, Alejo Carpentier’s seminal novel about the Haitian Revolution is predicated upon Carpentier’s voyage to Haiti six years earlier. This article attends to the role of voyage in Carpentier’s The Kingdom of This World, revealing the ways in which Carpentier’s storytelling and rendering of Haiti in both the novel and its prologue, and his accompanying theory of the marvelous real, adhere to Eurocentric conceptions of time that reinscribe this neocolonial space as anachronistic space. Because Carpentier can only perceive Haiti in the past, he replicates the role of the imperial travel writer in fashioning metropolitan conceptions of colonial spaces and reproduces the imbalance of power between visitor/visited. This perspective reinforces a dominant Euro-American image of Haiti as a strange and magical object of consumption and fails to imagine it as an independent, post-revolution state.

En el mundo literario el crédito por la autoría de La consagración de la primavera se da al cubano Alejo Carpentier. Sin embargo, en realidad la obra proviene de otros dos actantes: el compositor Ígor Stravinsky y el coreógrafo Vaslav Nijinsky, creadores, ambos, de un ballet del mismo nombre que Carpentier usaría posteriormente como base para su novela. Por tal razón es que el presente artículo busca establecer una relación entre las diferentes dimensiones —musicales, dancísticas y literarias— de esta obra artística, a fin de que la novela de Carpentier pueda ser entendida y considerada como una traducción del ballet ruso del mismo nombre a la experiencia de la Revolución Cubana que el escritor vivió.

El presente artículo destaca el rol del escritor cubano Alejo Carpentier en la configuración de la denominada nueva narrativa hispanoamericana. Se examina el impacto del vanguardismo sobre esa vertiente narrativa. Se aborda la etapa inicial de la obra literaria carpenteriana en el contexto de las vanguardias históricas latinoamericanas de los años 20-30. La asimilación del aporte de la vanguardia se combina con una atención del aporte africano a la cultura caribeña. Se evalúa luego el impacto en su producción de las teorías del realismo mágico o de lo real maravilloso y sus conexiones con el surrealismo. Este artigo tenciona analisar a relação entre pensamento estético e escrita da história nas conferências do escritor latino-americano Alejo Carpentier. Argumenta-se que as considerações de Carpentier acerca do papel do romancista são sintomas do esgotamento do esteticismo que orientava a produção literária cubana, fruto da percepção de que a arte, na modernidade, encontra-se desviada de seu destino, que é de ser a base da vida dos homens em sociedade. Carpentier percebe a necessidade de construção de um novo “espaço de experiências”, capaz de orientar a América Latina em seu destino, alicerçado em um processo de tradução capaz de gerar novas formas de identificação coletiva, e que tem no passado o elemento primordial de edificação da identidade latino-americana, parte integrante da sua forma de imaginar a nação.

Abstract:

In thesis IX of the Theses on the Philosophy of History, Walter Benjamin indicates, from the painting “Angelus Novus” by Paul Klee, that the Angel of History has his face turned back, contemplating a catastrophe. He wants to stay, but the great wind of progress is pushing him forward into the future, leaving rubble on its pass. The new historical novel The Kingdom of this World by Alejo Carpentier narrates the long and tortuous process of the Haitian Revolution and beyond. At the end of the novel, there is a great green wind that sweeps across the Northern Plain and the ruins of the old sugar mill. In Carpentier's novel, there is a “wet vulture”, which I will call the Vulture of History, which is thrown over Bois Caïman, the sacred space where the revolution originated. My purpose in this essay is to explore the Vulture of History as a baroque allegory of the Haitian Revolution. Unlike the angel from Benjamin's thesis, who wants to go back to the past to reconstruct history, Carpentier's vulture is an angel of death who feeds on the detritus of history.

O escritor cubano Alejo Carpentier conseguiu, a partir de uma prática escriturária emancipatória em relação aos escritos tradicionalmente aceitos, estabelecer uma releitura da práxis americana de narrar. Esforçando-se para reinserir o insólito como evento movimentador de narrativas, debruçou-se nos acontecimentos relatados pela vivência americana, tendo como conceito operatório o real maravilhoso, termo chave na invocação de uma América barroca, um barroco espacial e telúrico, a-histórico e plural. Polígrafo, e habitante esporádico da Ilha cubana, Alejo Carpentier retoma a América Latina como um local barroquizado, de uma latência sempre apta a reafirmar os discursos da abundância que fizeram muitas vezes o continente americano ser visto como exótico e bárbaro pelo olhar europeu. Este artigo busca salientar a práxis literária de Carpentier, informando vivência artística, sobretudo a literária, a partir dos conceitos que desenvolveu para se reler a América. Sua literatura, portanto, sob o signo do real maravilhoso é um projeto barroco de leitura da maravilha americana, cuja razão de ser essencial difere dos movimentos vanguardistas que o cooptaram, mas por outro lado o fizeram, juntamente com o periodismo que marcou toda sua carreira, buscar a vertente venal barroca como expressão de uma América Latina cósmica. Procuramos tecer o principal viés de Alejo Carpentier, o barroco-maravilhoso, enfocando suas opções políticas, artísticas e literárias como procedimentos multifários de um homem ensejado por um barroco plural, telúrico, próprio.

En su última novela, El arpa y la sombra (1979), el escritor cubano, Alejo Carpentier (1904- 1980) propone un cuestionamiento, personal e histórico, de la vida y los viajes de Cristóbal Colón al Nuevo Mundo. La novela de Carpentier confronta lo humano al impacto político y religioso de lo que hubiera sido la eventual beatificación de un hombre, cuyos actos determinaron en cierta medida la dinámica de las relaciones entre España y el Nuevo Mundo. En este artículo se analiza la forma en la que el “descubridor” es puesto al “descubierto” a través del proceso de desenmascaramiento. Lejos del discurso histórico y, sin embargo, partiendo de este mediante diversos hechos y documentos, Carpentier construye una ficción intensa que recupera de manera íntima la vida de Cristóbal Colón. La doble puesta en perspectiva del descubridor de América permite invertir el concepto del “descubrimiento” y crea una distancia irónica que cuestiona de igual manera al hombre y al personaje histórico.
