Abstract:
Abstract According to the Book of Mormon, men must obey the commandments of God in order to gain eternal life. And yet, men are incapable of yielding full obedience to God, due to die carnal nature they inherit from the fallen Adam and Eve. To overcome this carnal nature, God has provided a way, through the atonement of his Son, whereby men may be redeemed from the carnal state to a spiritual state. If men are to be redeemed, they must call upon the Lord in the spirit of true humility, faith, and repentance. If they do so, God will redeem them by the power of the Holy Ghost. Frequently associated with the redemption process is a covenant of obedience.

Abstract:
AbstractThe late 19th century saw the spread of anti-homosexual criminal laws to British colonies. The iconic example was the Indian Penal Code of 1860, with its prohibition of ‘carnal intercourse against the order of nature,’ a rewriting of the anti-Catholic ‘buggery’ law of 1534. The language of 377 travelled around the British colonial world. France and certain other parts of Europe had decriminalized homosexual acts a century earlier, so the colonial powers of Europe spoke with different voices. Modern decriminalization is largely the product of the human rights era - sixty years since the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Abstract:
Abstract For medieval audiences women occupied a specific, designated cultural area which, while they could freely form it according to their will and nature, was in fact imaginary and immaterial. Women in social, legal, and religious contexts were mostly counted among the receptive, inactive, and non-ruling groups. On both levels, there was a group of features universally defining all women: the strong, virtuous and independent model Aquinas lamented was replaced in real life by the sinful, carnal and weak stereotype, and the erotic, emotional, mysterious, and often wild type present predominantly in literature. Indeed, women were a source of scientific, theological, and cultural fascination because of their uncanny and complex nature, producing both fear and desire of the source and nature of the unattainable and inaccessible femininity. In social contexts, however, the enchantress seems to lose that veil of allure and, instead, is forced to re-define her identity by suppressing, denying, or losing her supernatural features. With the example of Saint Agnes from the South English Legendary Life of Saint Agnes, and Melior from Partonope of Blois (ca. 1450), the article will explore how medieval texts dealt with the complex and unruly female supernatural, and how its neutralization and subduing fitted into the moral, scientific, and cultural norms of medieval society.

Abstract:
The work Le sei giornate by Pietro of Arezzo (1492-1556) is notable for its intricate, ambiguous, and challenging nature, particularly in relation to its exploration of sexuality. , which involves the explicit depiction of bodies as carnal and forbidden, representing a deviation from conventional norms. Le sei giornate (also known as Ragionamenti; or, Dialogue of Nanna and Antonia under a Fig Tree in Rome) exalts licentiousness from the unique perspective of a woman who embodies the roles of nun, wife, and courtesan. This article examines the portrayal of the courtesan in Aretino’s text, tracing the influences—from Pasquin to Rabelais—that propelled this relatively underappreciated author into the realm of the notoriety. Through an exploration of its connection with the public square and its association with the carnivalesque, this study delves into the historical backdrop of 16th-century Italy.

Abstract:
It is a great principle of the ancient Tamils that the way of life and culture of the people will depend on the nature of the land on which they live. In that sense, the activities corresponding to the respective land are referred to as "discipline" or "Thinai". There are generally two types of thinai, namely, domestic and public. The ego is the expression of the feelings of the heart. Accordingly, if we study Agathinai, the word Agathinai refers to the life of the people. This paper examines the tendency in tribal Tamil society to the transformation of intraocular pleasure into bliss and then into carnal pleasure in the dominant feudal society. This study will help those who seek to understand the domestic life of Tamils through grammar in the future to gain a proper understanding. Moreover, the study of grammar helps in identifying the Tamil community as a patrilineal society when the dominant mentality takes root in the society.

Abstract:
Marcellus perceives the incarnation of Jesus as the moment when not only does the Logos assume a human body, but a change also occurs in God himself. The change consists in the expansion of a monad into a triad. It is the second transformation already. The first one took place at the beginning of creation. It was then that the Logos passed from the State of being „in God" to being „with God". Marcellus underlines that neither the first nor the latter can be defined as generation. The term „generation refers only to Jesus' birth from Mary. The changes undergone by God, first at creation, then at the incarnation, are not of permanent nature. On the contrary, they are temporary and reversible. Upon completing the history of the world, God will return to the monadic State. The incarnation will also come to an end. Marcellus presents the incarnation as temporary and „external" in relation to the Logos. When the „carnal economy" is completed, the Logos is to return to His original State of resting „in God".

Abstract:
Abstract The “affective” turn has enabled many scholars to theorise media representations not only as texts that can be distantly decoded but also as a matter of emotional attachments, intensities of feelings, synesthetic sensations, and embodied experiences. Yet, what has been less often theorized is how this affective meaningmaking is (re)shaped by the dynamic and interactive nature of social networking systems such as Facebook or Twitter. How do images and the affective qualities that “stick” to them, travel and transform through user engagement where “users grab images and technologies by which they are grabbed in return” (Paasonen, Carnal Resonance 178; Senft 2008). We aim to explore this question further through examples of humorous images from the January 2017 Women’s March, considered within the digital contexts of Facebook and Twitter. Social movement scholars argue that emotional engagement can be a powerful and positive motivating factor in getting people involved in political life, and we here suggest that these humorous images can move the reader in new critical directions, encouraging them to challenge systems of inequality and oppression in contemporary society.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the anthropological views of Cyril of Turov on the relationship of spiritual and bodily principles in human nature. In connection with this goal, a review of general anthropological ideas about human nature, presented in Eastern Christian patristic thought, is undertaken in order to identify possible continuity in the works of the ancient Russian author. The tradition of anthropological dualism characteristic of Byzantine patristic thought is shown. A detailed reflection of the relationship between the spiritual and the carnal in human nature is considered on the material of such early works by Cyril of Turov as “A word about the monasticism”, “The Legend of the Chernorizsky rank”, and later – “The Parable of the Soul and Body”, “The Word about the Relaxed”. As a result of the research, the author of the article concludes that, firstly, physicality in the anthropology of the ancient Russian author acts as a necessary outer shell for the soul, a form that is not sinful in isolation from spiritual movements, but acts as a receptacle of vice in connection with the free will of a person who has decided to live his life in satisfying earthly temptations and animals needs. Secondly, sin is an exclusively spiritual burden and spiritual responsibility. And, finally, thirdly, according to Cyril of Turov, soul and body are not opposed within a human being, but act as necessary, equally significant parts of the indivisible, undifferentiated integrity of the perfect creation of the Lord – man.

Abstract:
As a corporeal being, man is part of the material world, he lives and is subject to processes similar to those which prevail in the world of animals and exceeds them only owing to the fact that he possesses a rational soul. Thus, although a body makes animality possible for a man to exist and function, its nature, meaning man’s similarity to animals, is defined mainly by the relationship between the soul and body. Since animals do not have minds, animality understood on the ontological level is something man and animals share in common. St. Augustine describes this as experiencing bodily sensations by the sensual being, which, because of their turning towards material things, lives in the world of bodily sensations and finds their place in it. Therefore, this is irrational delectation in bodily matters. This animality in humans is also considered as a possible lifestyle, which means it is an object of the will’s choice and assumes the form of the process of becoming similar to animals in the moral sense. It consists in the fact that man, who is created in the image and likeness of God, being turned to Him by nature, yet due to the sin of pride turns away from Him and from contemplation of eternal truths, and because of covetousness goes towards the carnal world. Being pleased with worldly possessions and directing his desires towards them, man becomes accustomed to existing among corporeal matters, forgetting about God and his own nature, and aspires to sensual pleasures. Therefore, the consequence of turning away from the Creator and lustfully turning to worldly possessions is blindness that leads him or her into slavery of corporeality and idolatry.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the work of four contemporary novelists who express themselves in one or more other artistic fields: Italian musicologist Alessandro Baricco, American painter Per-cival Everett, Bosnian sculptor Nedžad Ibrišimović, and Belgian photographer and filmma-ker Jean-Philippe Toussaint. Our work is interested primarily in the psychological issues of creation that extend themselves beyond verbal language. In order to understand the role of other disciplines compared to writing, we first analyze general features of artistic experience as they are represented in the fictional universes of their novels. Inspired by psychoanalytic theories highlighting the effects that initial experiences of lan-guage learning and childhood games have on later artistic creation, we analyze the artistic act as the transformation of an old sense into a new form, opening the artist up to the world from which he once felt excluded. Our analyses show, for example, that visual arts have a particular role in questioning one’s relation to an alternate nature. Driven by his own desire, the artist abandons the familiar structures of meaning and inevitably arrives at an unknown area. Immersed in this new place, he gets closer to an archaic identity based on carnal nature. The sensorial experience opens him up to an invisible aspect of the real world. On one hand, he is finally liberated from conventional perception, on the other, the experience of something new makes him face his deepest fears. Therefore, creating means finding a code that can both assure protection from primal anxieties while maintaining movement and freedom of being. Creation in several arts is a response to this double demand of artistic ex-pression

Abstract:
Over the last 15 years, pinniped tourism has experienced a rapid growth in the Southern Hemisphere, and particularly in Australia and New Zealand where at least four sites attract more than 100,000 visitors per year. Tourism focused on the Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea), a protected species endemic to Australia, occurs in at least nine sites in South Australia and Western Australia. Australian sea lions haul out on several offshore islands in the Perth region. Carnac Island Nature Reserve is one of the main sites where people can view sea lions near Perth, either during recreational activities or on commercial tours. This study sought: (1) to investigate the potential impact of human visitors on Australian sea lions hauled out on Carnac Island, (2) to consider implications of the results for the management of Carnac Island Nature Reserve, and (3) to examine under which conditions tourism and recreation around sea lions can be sustained in the long term. Sea lion numbers, rate of return to the site, behavioural response to human presence and incidents of disturbances of sea lions by visitors were recorded over a period of four months on Carnac Island. A survey of 207 visitors was also carried out. Findings indicated that there were two main types of human impacts on the sea lions: * A specific state of sea lion vigilance induced by low level, but ongoing, repetitive disturbances from human presence, sustained at various approach distances ranging to more than 15 m, vigilance that is different from the behaviour profile observed in the absence of human disturbance, * Impacts resulting from incidental direct disturbances of sea lions by visitors from inappropriate human recreational activities or from visitors trying to elicit a more 'active' sea lion response than the usual 'sleeping or resting' behaviour on display; these impacts included sea lions retreating and leaving the beach, or displaying aggressive behaviour. Impacts on sea lions from these disturbances may range from a potential sea lion physiological stress response to sea lions leaving the beach, a reduction in the time sea lions spend hauling out, and, in the longer term, the risk of sea lions abandoning the site altogether. Repeated instances of visitors (including unsupervised young children) approaching sea lions at very short distances of less than 2.5 m represented a public safety risk. Results also indicated that (1) the numbers of sea lions hauled out and their rate of return to the beach did not appear to be affected by an increase in the level of human visitation (although longer-term studies would be required to confirm this result); and (2) there appeared to be a high turnover rate of sea lions at the site from day to day, suggesting that there are frequent arrivals and departures of sea lions to and from Carnac Island. The visitor survey indicated that many visitors to Carnac Island had a recreational focus that was not primarily directed towards sea lion viewing ('incidental ecotourists'). Although many visitors witnessed incidental disturbance caused by humans to sea lions, they did not seem to recognise that they themselves could disturb sea lions through their mere presence. Visitors also seemed to have a limited awareness of the safety risk posed by sea lions at close range. Visitors expressed support for the presence of a volunteer ranger on the beach and for more on-site information about sea lions. Finally, visitors indicated that they greatly valued their sea lion viewing experience. It is anticipated that the continued increase in visitation to Carnac Island from recreation and from tourism will result in intensified competition for space between humans and sea lions. Long-term impacts of human disturbances on sea lions are unknown, but a physiological stress response and/or the abandonment of haulout sites has been observed in other pinniped species. The findings of this study highlight the need to implement a long-term strategy to reduce disturbance levels of sea lions by visitors at Carnac Island to ensure that tourism and recreation around sea lions can be sustained in the long term. Recommendations include measures to control visitor numbers on the island through an equitable allocation system between various user groups, the development of on-site sea lion interpretation and a public education and awareness program, the setting up of a Sea Lion Sanctuary Zone on the main beach, ongoing monitoring of sea lion and visitor numbers and other data, and a system of training and accreditation of guides employed by tour operators.

The Yellow Cardinal, Gubernatrix cristata, is a threatened passerine that had its populations drastically reduced, mainly by illegal capture and wildlife trade, and habitat loss. Natural history information of the species is few and often innacurate. In order to raise awareness of the Yellow Cardinal and provide subsidies for its conservation, we studied the autecology of the Brazilian population of Yellow Cardinal. Our study was conducted in the municipality of Barra do Quara?, westernmost State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, during two breeding seasons (October to February, 2013?2015), after a brief pilot-study that started in 2012. We ringed 35 (seven females, 14 males and 14 young) out of 53 individuals found, and by September 2015, the whole Brazilian population of Yellow Cardinal had 38 individuals. We monitored 30 nests, where we observed various aspects of species autecology. We found evidence that leaves may be an important food item in species diet. The adults sex ratio is 1.5:1 and the lifespan is at least 8 years. Pairs are socially monogamous and territorial, with male-biased philopatry and female-biased dispersion. Mean size of breeding territories is 18 ha and mean home range is 27.7 ha. Some pairs and nests (23%) are attended by one or two additional individuals (nest helpers), which contribute on nest and territory defence, and on feeding of nestlings and fledglings. Breeding season starts from first week of October, with a peak of active nests in mid-November and lasts until mid-February. The open-cup nests are built in six days by female, almost all of them in Prosopis affinis, at mean nest height from ground of 2.4 m. Clutch size is three eggs, which female incubates during 12.9 days. The hatching rate is 76% and nestlings fledge after 16 days. Parental care is biparental or cooperative, and the pair have high frequency of visits to the nest than helpers. Nestling survival rate is 67% with mean productivity of 1.6 fledgling per successful nest, and was higher in nests attended by helpers. We recorded second broods after successful attempts, on which helpers were present. Mean interval between nesting attempts was 15.6 days and mean distance was 220.7 m. Shiny Cowbird, Molothrus bonariensis, parasites nests of Yellow Cardinal, with frequency of 67% and intensity of 1.9 egg per parasitized nest. Punctured eggs by female cowbirds led to abandonment of 15% of parasitized nests. From six nests where cowbirds hatched, in two (33%) Yellow Cardinal successfully fledged. Nestlings can be parasitized by botfly larvae (Philornis sp.), with prevalence in 33% of nests where nestlings hatched. Predation was the main cause of nest losses (73%) and we recorded a Leopardus geoffroyi preying on a nest with eggs. The apparent nest success was 27% and the Mayfield nesting success was 18%. The fledgling survival rate during the first month outside the nest was 62%. We recorded a case of inbreeding, between father and daughter. Large home range needs and factors that may adversely affect breeding success (e.g. inbreeding, predation, parasitism) can aggravate the status of the Brazilian population and species. It reinforces the importance of autecology studies and their contribution to the conservation schemes.

The development of composite materials encompasses many different application areas. Among the composites, it is had, especially, the materials of organic origin, which have the greatest potential for biodegradability and so, have been bringing relevance and prominence in the contemporary setting of environmental preservation and sustainable development. Following this perspective of ecological appeal, it was developed a biocomposite material with natural inputs typically brazilian. This composite was made from latex (natural rubber) and carnauba fiber in different mass proportions. Formulations had varied by 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of fiber in relation the matrix. This material has been designed aiming at application in thermal insulation systems, which requirethermal protection surfaces and/or reduction of thermal energy loss. Therefore, the composite was characterized by thermal conductivity testing, specific heat, thermal diffusivity and thermogravimetry. As has also been characterized for their physical-mechanical, by testing density, moisture content, tensile strength, hardness and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The characterization of the material revealed that the composite presents a potential of thermal insulation higher than the natural rubber, that was used as reference. And the formulation at 15% fiber in relation the matrix showed the best performance. Thus, the composite material in question presents itself as a viable and effective alternative for new thermal insulation material design.

Findings indicated that there were two main types of human impacts on the sea lions: • A specific state of sea lion vigilance induced by low level, but ongoing, repetitive disturbances from human presence, sustained at various approach distances ranging to more than 15 m, vigilance that is different from the behaviour profile observed in the absence of human disturbance, • Impacts resulting from incidental direct disturbances of sea lions by visitors from inappropriate human recreational activities or from visitors trying to elicit a more ‘active’ sea lion response than the usual ‘sleeping or resting’ behaviour on display; these impacts included sea lions retreating and leaving the beach, or displaying aggressive behaviour. The visitor survey indicated that many visitors to Carnac Island had a recreational focus that was not primarily directed towards sea lion viewing (‘incidental ecotourists’).

The Brazilian companies together are responsible to produce annually 70,000 tons of almonds cashew, generating about 45 thousand tons of liquid cashew nut shell (CNSL) in the year. The CNSL is often discarded in Chestnut beneficiation process, but this fluid and its the main constituents (Cardanol and Cardol) are a natural source of phenolic compounds and unsaturated long chain. This feature gives some important properties for use as antioxidant activity. Assessing the main characteristics of this compound, the work was to study the activity of LCC constituents as active antioxidant potential for cosmetic products, for antioxidant efficacy in skin and repellent action. Formulations were prepared using cardanol, cardol saturated and unsaturated, in concentrations from 0.03 to 20% for bactericidal activity and more specifically from 0.03 to 0.1% antioxidant. Formulations BHT were prepared and used as a reference. By DPPH method it was possible to verify that all formulations showed higher antioxidant activity or similar to the formulations containing the BHT in all concentrations. In addition, these formulations were subjected to antimicrobial tests and were active against strains of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, indicating that in addition to antioxidant, these can be employed as antimicrobial active formulations. It has also produced a moisturizer repellent with LCC Natural, technical, and Cardol Cardanol comparing its activity to a commercial repellent N, N-dimethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET). In tests using mice, the product showed the percentage of repellency of 98% to 100% compared with the pure moisturizer. Furthermore, in studies with humans, it has been found that the Natural CNSL was repellency of 93.8%, followed by 92.4% cardol. These values have proved to be equivalent to the percentage of commercial repellent DEET (93.6%). In addition to other activities, the cardanol was tested as a biological shield in pigskin, this asset was used to decrease free radicals in the skin with the submission to radiation UV. This was served to the skin with a proprietary delivery system favoring its solubility in aqueous vehicles and their permeation into the skin. It was shown to reduce the formation of radicals lives in the presence of this antioxidant. Thus, the results presented here will contribute to sustainable development and origin of natural and effective raw materials. However, many studies are still necessary in order to add value to a substrate that has a lot of potential but that is little explored.

The increase in life expectancy is a worldwide occurrence that shows the relative success of public health politics, and Brazil is among the countries where people are living longer and in better physical health. But the increase in life expectancy has a negative effect: the appearance of degenerative diseases typical of old age, including several forms of dementia, like Alzheimer?s Disease (AD) that is certainly the most important. It is an irreversible and progressive disease characterized by neuronal deterioration that results in loss of cognitive functions such as memory, communication skills, judgment and reasoning. Donepezil, rivastigmine and galantamine are medicines used for the treatment of AD and act reversibly inhibiting the acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Evidences suggest that the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), closely related to AChE, plays a significant role in AD because it is involved in neural functions such as cholinergic co-regulation and non-cholinergic neurotransmission. The aim of this research is to provide new substances with anticholinesterase action by using ?-carboline derivatives from the natural product harmane and carry out a kinetic study to determine the inhibition profile of the enzymes AChE e BChE, which could help in the discovery of new compounds which could be useful in the treatment of AD. Firstly, a screening was carried out with seven ?-carboline derivatives. In a second stage, a kinetic investigation, employing Ellman?s method, was run with these compounds and all of them presented high anticholinesterase action for both AChE and BChE. All seven derivatives presented a non-competitive reversible inhibition.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractHere on Earth, nature comes to life with the „fire” of the Sun—when the Sun’s light is received, heat is created to which, as Sadi Carnot said, „we must attribute the great movements which attract our attention here on Earth; it is to heat that we owe the agitations of the atmosphere, the rise of clouds, the fall of rain and other meteors, the currents of water which channel the surface of the globe, and of which man has thus far employed but a small portion. Even earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are the result of heat.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter demonstrates the inherently gendered and racialised nature of predictive policing technologies through an interrogation of the way that domestic, sexual, and gender-based forms of violence are represented in predictive policing tools and in the discourse around predictive policing. It reveals how predictive policing technologies not only reproduce existing patriarchal approaches to gender-based violence, but also possess the potential to shape and produce how gender-based violence is understood, identified, policed, and prosecuted. McInerney argues that as prisons and other carceral institutions are arenas of state-sanctioned sexual violence, these tools cannot be successfully employed for feminist ends.

Abstract:
Chapter 4 constitutes a pioneering study of the practice and prosecution of bestiality in twentieth-century Scotland. In turn, it examines the social status, background, lifestyle and possible motive of offenders, the nature and location of the crime committed, and the process by which it was brought to the attention of the law. The variety of roles undertaken by the police in investigating complaints and preparing evidence for the Procurators Fiscal is detailed. In addition, the significant contribution of forensic and veterinary medicine to building the prosecution case is illustrated, as is the limited use of psychiatric evidence after the First World War. The chapter also discusses the impact of the social taboo surrounding bestiality on the reluctance of Procurators Fiscal at times to initiate prosecutions and the secretive nature of many trial proceedings. Finally, sentencing practices in the period 1900−30 are examined and the degree of continuity and change in medico-legal perceptions of the offence identified..

Abstract:
Two articles on Dostoevsky’s strongest female characters, Nastasya Filippovna (from The Idiot) and the “Infernal Woman” Grushenka (from The Brothers Karamazov). Volynsky’s approach emanates from his belief that women’s bodies represent the aesthetic and metaphysical locus of the core Dostoevskian concern: the fate of beauty on this earth. Especially in his treatment of Grushenka, Volynsky posits the flesh’s potential to turn into spirit and the individual, carnal, and also sinister nature of beauty to disclose its fundamentally universal, divine, and benevolent foundation—all of which Volynsky will see fully realized in ballet.

Abstract:
Abstract detestable and abominable sin, amongst Christians not to be named, committed by carnal knowledge against the ordinance of the creator, and order of nature. ‘ This was how the eminent English jurist, one-time attorney-general, and scourge of the Gunpowder Plotters, Sir Edward Coke, described the crime of ‘buggery or sodomy ‘. He went on to deWne the act as involving ‘penetratio, that is, res in re [thing in thing], either with mankind, or with beast ‘. It was for this most heinous of moral oVences that John Atherton was tried, convicted, and executed in the last months of 1640.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines an excerpt from an interview with Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey in John Fritscher’s Popular Witchcraft: Straight from the Witch’s Mouth (1972). Emerging from the counterculture movements of the 1960s, LaVey claimed to blend the discourses of science and magic to present a “rational” religion that caters to the “true” nature of humankind. LaVey’s Satanism views Satan as a symbol of liberty, antinomianism, and Epicureanism, wherein the satanic figure is a rebellious hero representing sexual freedom, intellectual curiosity, and unapologetic materialism. Fritscher’s interview with LaVey is perhaps one of the most circulated and influential, as it captures LaVey just beyond the initial foundational years of the Church of Satan. In the interview, LaVey denies the existence of a literal Satan, interpreting a satanic “presence” as an exteriorized version of his own ego. He also targets Christianity’s apparent duplicity in terms of human sexuality, as it (and all religion) denies and suppresses the essential carnal, animal nature of humankind.

Abstract:
Abstract “In the whole world I believe there are no two sins more abominable than those that prevail among the Florentines,” commented Pope Gregory XI in 1376. “The first is their usury and infidelity,” he specified, alluding to the moneylending activities of international merchant-bankers that had made Florence one of the most prosperous and important cities in Europe. “The second,” he continued, hedging his words with care, “is so abominable that I dare not mention it.” The sin the pope deftly avoided naming, using a standard euphemism for what the late medieval Church deemed the most evil and dangerous of carnal vices, was of course the “unspeakable” practice of sodomy. Although this term could denote a wide range of prohibited sexual behaviors deemed “contrary to nature”—so called because they did not lead to procreation, the sole “natural” purpose of sex according to Catholic dogma—it usually referred to sex between males.

Abstract:
This chapter argues that in Shakespeare’s dark comedies, Troilus and Cressida, All’s Well that Ends Well, and Measure for Measure, the signifier “will’ (denoting sexual desire) is key in underscoring the dark side of male desire. In Troilus and Cressida, sexual appetite runs counter to rational and moral judgment, while in All’s Well Betram prefers casual gratification of his ‘will’ to the commitment of marriage to Helena. Angelo in Measure for Measure demonstrates ‘lust in action’ (Sonnet 129) in his sexual coercion of the novitiate nun Isabella. This chapter also analyses how the bed trick (in two of these plays) demonstrates, though the easy substitution of one female body for another, the indiscriminate nature of male desire. Measure for Measure is particularly cynical about how far the institution of marriage can contain disruptive sexual desire, or the ‘carnal lusts and appetites’ denounced by the ‘Solemnization of Matrimony’ service used in Shakespeare’s time.

Abstract:
This presentation will outline the practice-led research project Carnival Land, a picture book that weaves together sequential storytelling and illustration to discuss cultural dislocation. Based on my experiences as an immigrant from Brazil to New Zealand, it provides a narrative in metaphors and a creative orchestration of photomontage, bilinguality, and theatricised multi-page spreads. The story tells of the trials and eventual transformation of a young girl in a foreign land, where aspirations appear as costumes in an annual Carnival parade. Several theoretical frameworks significantly influenced Carnival Land. These were notions of transgression, carnality, and Carnival (Bakhtin, 1968); structure and discourse surrounding bricolage (Strauss, 1962); and writings relating to journey both as a rite of passage (Gennep, 1960; Turner, 1979); and as a process of immigration. Carnival has served as a primary metaphor, underpinning both the story and conceptual aspects of the work. Traditionally, people in Carnival parades participate in a symbolic ritual of identity change and re-negotiation of social and cultural contexts. They do this by assuming (in costume and behaviour) an alternative self. This transformative aspect of Carnival may be seen as a form of symbolical reversal, a brief moment of liminality that allows people to imagine new meanings and values in a ritual of performance. It is through this process that the performative nature of Carnival becomes a transformative process of being. The carnal (bodily) nature of Carnival enables specific linkages between the transformation of the self and the nature of immigration as a transitional physical/social/personal experience. Methodologically, the project emanates from an artistic research paradigm (Klein, 2010) that supports a heuristic approach (Douglass and Moustakas, 1985) to the discovery and refinement of ideas. The project employed autoethnography as a research design intended to facilitate the strategic accessing of personal experience and synthesised it into a fictional work. Thus, the research draws upon both tacit and explicit knowledge in developing the narrative, its structure, and stylistic treatments.

Abstract:
The typical curriculum in a thermodynamics course includes the Carnot cycle, a series of processes that constitute the most efficient heat engine between two constant temperature reservoirs. The conventional view of this cycle is that it is an ideal that cannot be achieved in practice. The spate of hurricanes that battered the U.S. in 2005 has given rise to extensive thermodynamic analysis of these storms with the finding that they in fact replicate the Carnot cycle. Heat energy fuels the storm through evaporation of the warm ocean waters at constant temperature. Work is produced by adiabatic expansion upward of the saturated air, resulting in strong winds. Energy is then released by radiation to space at the approximately constant temperature of the upper atmosphere. Adiabatic compression follows as the air descends back to sea level. Unlike the textbook Carnot engine, the work output of the hurricane is returned to the cycle by frictional dissipation due to the wind at the sea surface boundary layer. This paper will describe the hurricane in thermodynamic terms so as to appreciate its great power and efficiency. It may be a worthwhile topic to include in a thermodynamics course.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Abstract This paper further explores the potential advantages of a symmetric, parallel-actuated pointing device known as the “Carpal wrist.” Much like its natural counterpart, the Carpal wrist has eight primary links, corresponding to the eight carpal bones of the human wrist, a parallel actuation scheme, similar to the flexor and extensor carpi muscles along the forearm, and an open interior passage, which forms a protected tunnel for routing hoses and electrical cables. The Carpal wrist also has the significant advantages of possessing closed form forward and inverse kinematic solutions and a large, dexterous workspace that is free of interior singularities (either considered separately or as part of a manipulator arm). As a result of its symmetric, parallel architecture, the wrist has a large payload capacity and can easily be adapted to a variety of actuation schemes. One embodiment of the Carpal wrist is shown in Fig. 1.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The possibility, first raised by Rudolf Hilferding, of stabilizing a capitalist economy through the operations of a ‘general cartel’, leaving only social and political ‘contradictions’ to disturb the functioning of the system, gave rise to a discussion among Marxists not only on whether such a stabilization was at all possible, but also on the nature and scope of those contradictions. This discussion had been anticipated in the 1890s in the work of the Polish Marxist Ludwik Krzywicki (1859 – 1941). He put forward the idea that, in a capitalist economy stabilized in this way, a state of ‘industrial feudalism’ would prevail, in which society would become stratified into social classes without the possibility of mobility between those classes. This analysis was extended in 1940s by Oskar Lange (1904-1965) as he attempted to make sense of the American New Deal and rediscovered in the 1950s by Tadeusz Kowalik (1926-2012). This paper explains the concept of industrial feudalism and argues that the main mechanism for such a stratification today is the unequal distribution of wealth, in the context of declining welfare provision.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Southeast Coast Network (SECN) conducts long-term terrestrial vegetation monitoring as part of the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Program. The vegetation community vital sign is one of the primary-tier resources identi?ed by SECN park managers, and monitoring is conducted at 15 network parks (DeVivo et al. 2008). Monitoring plants and their associated communities over time allows for targeted understanding of ecosystems within the SECN geography, which provides managers information about the degree of change within their parks? natural vegetation. 2021 marked the ?rst year of conducting this monitoring e?ort at Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CHAT). Thirty vegetation plots were established throughout the park from June through July. Data collected in each plot included species richness across multiple spatial scales, species-speci?c cover and constancy, species-speci?c woody stem seedling/sapling counts and adult tree (greater than 10 centimeters [3.9 inches {in}]) diameter at breast height (DBH), overall tree health, landform, soil, observed disturbance, and woody biomass (i.e., fuel load) estimates. This report summarizes the baseline (year 1) terrestrial vegetation data collected at Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in 2021. Data were strati?ed across two dominant broadly de?ned habitats within the park, including Piedmont Upland Forests and Piedmont Alluvial Wetland Vegetation and three land parcels: North?from Bowman?s Island to Abbotts Bridge, Middle?from Medlock Bridge to Gold Branch, and South?from Sope Creek to Palisades. Noteworthy ?ndings include: 299 vascular plant taxa were observed across 30 vegetation plots, including 29 species not previously documented within the park. The most frequently encountered species in each broadly de?ned habitat included: Piedmont Alluvial Wetland Vegetation: Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense), sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), eastern poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans var. radicans), muscadine (Muscadinia rotundifolia var. rotundifolia), and smallspike false nettle (Boehmeria cylindrica). Piedmont Upland Forests: tuliptree (Liriodendron tulipifera var. tulipifera), eastern poison ivy, Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), cat greenbrier (Smilax glauca), muscadine, mockernut hickory (Carya tomentosa), and black edge sedge (Carex nigromarginta). Sixteen non-native species categorized as invasive by the Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council (GA-EPPC 2023) were encountered during this monitoring e?ort, including two not previously detected within the park?miniature beefsteak plant (Mosla dianthera) and Chinese holly (Ilex cornuta). Chinese privet and Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) were the most frequently encountered and abundant invasive plant within the park. One species of special concern listed for Georgia (GADNR 2024) was observed during this monitoring e?ort?large-fruited sanicle (Sanicula trifoliata). Tuliptree, loblolly pine (Pinus taeda), boxelder (Acer negundo var. negundo), river birch (Betula nigra), and sweetgum were the most dominant species within the tree stratum of Piedmont Alluvial Wetlands of Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area; white oak (Quercus alba), loblolly pine, tuliptree, and mockernut hickory were the most dominant species of Piedmont Upland Forests. Chinese privet was the most abundant species within the sapling and seedling strata of Piedmont Alluvial Wetlands. The mortality rate of green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) within Piedmont Alluvial Wetland plots was high, and it is likely these trees succumbed to impacts from emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis). The emerald ash borer is a wood-boring pest of ash (Fraxinus sp.) and is native to Asia. Since its discovery in the U. S. in the early 2000s, the insect has been responsible for the death of tens of millions of ash trees in the eastern and midwestern parts of the country. At this time, it is not certain whether the declining health of ash within Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is due to emerald ash borer, edaphic factors that are responsible for natural mortality and decline, or other factors. Other threats to native vegetation within the park are: (1) the high prevalence of non-native, invasive plant species; (2) ?re suppression within oak-hickory; and (3) impacts from heavy browse by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). All plots monitored during this sampling e?ort are scheduled to be resampled in 2024.

Abstract:
The Association of Research Libraries (ARL)/Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) Joint Task Force on Research Data Services (RDS) formed in 2020 with a two-fold purpose: (1) to demonstrate and commit to the roles research libraries have in stewarding research data and as part of institution-wide research support services and (2) to guide the development of resources for the ARL and CARL memberships in advancing their organizations as collaborative partners with respect to research data services in the context of FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) data principles and the US National Academies’ Open Science by Design framework. Research libraries will be successful in meeting these objectives if they act collectively and are deeply engaged with disciplinary communities. The task force formed three working groups of data practitioners, representing a wealth of expertise, to research the institutional landscape and policy environment in both the US and Canada. This report of the ARL/CARL RDS task force’s working group on partnerships highlights library RDS programs’ work with partners and stakeholders. The report provides a set of tools for libraries to use when assessing their RDS partnerships, including assessing partnerships using a partnership life cycle, defining the continuum of possible partnerships, and creating a catalog. Not all partnerships will last the entirety of a librarian’s career, and having clear parameters for when to continue or sunset a partnership can reduce ambiguity and free up resources. Recognizing the continuum of possible partnerships can provide the framework by which librarians can understand the nature of each group. From cyclical to seasonal to sporadic, understanding the needs of a type of partnership can help libraries frame their understanding and meet a group where they are. Finally, creating a catalog of partnerships can help libraries see the landscape of the organization, as well as areas for growth. This approach also aligns with OCLC’s 2020 report on Social Interoperability in Research Support: Cross-Campus Partnerships and the University Research Enterprise, which highlights the necessity of building and stewarding partnerships. Developing and providing services in a decentralized organization relies on the ability to build trusted relationships. These tools will help libraries achieve sustainable growth that is in concert with their partners, generating robust, clearly aligned initiatives that benefit all parties, their campuses, and their communities.

Abstract:
Federal, state, and non-governmental partners resurveyed landbirds in the Ka?? Rainforest on the Island of Hawai?i in 2019. Point-transect distance sampling was conducted in Hawai?i Volcanoes National Park, Ka?? Forest Reserve, Kap?pala Forest Reserve, and Kap?pala Cooperative Game Management Area. This is the first comprehensive survey of the region since 2008. Through a collaborative effort, monitoring transects were consolidated to provide a consistent, repeatable sampling frame for future surveys. We estimated landbird distribution, density, and abundance for eight surveys since 1976. Changes in species-specific densities were assessed using a log-linear regression to determine trends of the six most recent surveys since 2002. Trends were assessed in three strata: low elevation (<1,500 m), high elevation (?1,500 m), and total survey area. We detected 23 species and there were sufficient detections of 11 species to estimate density and abundance. We provided indices of relative occurrence for the remaining 12 species detected. Native birds vulnerable to avian malaria (Plasmodium relictum) were absent or trended downward in the low elevation stratum. The federally endangered ?Akiap?l??au (Hemignathus wilsoni), ?Alaw? (Hawai?i Creeper, Loxops mana) and Hawai?i ??kepa (Loxops coccineus) were restricted to areas above 1,500 m elevation, likely due to the low prevalence of the cold-intolerant vector of avian malaria, the southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus), in this high elevation stratum. However, downward trends of the federally threatened ?I?iwi (Drepanis coccinea) above 1,500 m elevation may indicate an expansion in range of mosquitoes due to warming trends. Thought to be more resilient to avian malaria, the ?Apapane (Himatione sanguinea) and Hawai?i ?Amakihi (Chlorodrepanis virens virens) trended upward in all three strata. The Hawai?i ?Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis) trended downward in each stratum. The ??ma?o (Myadestes obscurus) trended upward in the low stratum and downward in high. Trends were inconclusive for Hawai?i ??kepa, but favorable for ?Alaw?, which trended upward in its restricted range. There were insufficient detections of ?Akiap?l??au in 2019 to estimate density, but the 2008 abundance estimate of 691 ? 410 (SE) birds was the lowest since 1976. Trends were mixed for the non-native Warbling White-eye (Zosterops japonicus), Red-billed Leiothrix (Leiothrix lutea), and Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). Overall, upward trends of ?Apapane and Hawai?i ?Amakihi throughout the survey area, ??ma?o in the low stratum, and ?Alaw? in the high stratum, suggests management actions to protect native forest bird habitat are having a positive benefit. Nevertheless, avian malaria is predicted to have an increasing impact on vulnerable species as mosquitoes expand into higher elevations.

Abstract:
In 2005, the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network initiated bird surveys on Herbert Hoover National Historic Site to monitor changes in bird community composition and abundance and improve our understanding of relationships between breeding birds and their habitat and the effects of management actions on those relationships. This information helps park staff plan management objectives and assess the effectiveness of management alternatives. We evaluated park breeding bird trends in the context of trends observed within the North American Bird Conservation Initiative?s Eastern Tallgrass Prairie Bird Conservation Region where the park is located. This allows us to assess the influence of park habitat management on bird populations with an understanding of regional population trends that are outside the influence of natural resource management activities at the park. Seventy-four species of birds were recorded in 18 years (2005?2022). Seventy-one of the species are considered breeding species (permanent or summer residents). Seven of these are species of concern for the Eastern Tallgrass Prairie Bird Conservation Region. Nine species were observed in sufficient numbers to calculate annual abundances and trends with some degree of statistical confidence. The Red-winged Blackbird, American Robin and Dickcissel were the most abundant and widespread species on the park. Comparisons of regional trends (2005?2019; Sauer et al. 2020) with park population trends were inconclusive. Trends in the nine abundant species on the park were uncertain. Regionally, Dickcissel and Northern Cardinal were increasing. However, American Goldfinch, American Robin, Common Grackle, Common Yellowthroat, Eastern Meadowlark, Mourning Dove, and Red-winged Blackbird were declining regionally. Diversity, richness, and evenness in distribution of individuals across species in the park breeding bird community were unchanged over the 18 years. When sampled, habitats on the plots at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site consisted primarily of the old field/prairie type, with lesser amounts of other types present. Canopy cover averaged 2 to 13% on plots, with cover provided primarily by hard?wood trees. Basal area of hardwood trees averaged between 1 and 2 m2/ha, and canopy height averaged between 4 and 5 m. Tree species from 12 different families contrib?uted to the canopy cover and basal area of plots. Plots were primarily unvegetated at ground level, with grass litter common and bare soil exposed. Total foliar cover at ground level on consisted primarily of cool season grasses and forbs.
