Mgandela, Sibongile Princess S. P. "Experiences of nurses who care for patients with severe/profound intellectual disabilities at a level 3 Psychiatric hospital in the Western Cape." University of the Western Cape, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4077.
Full textThe study explores the experiences of nurses who care for severe/profound intellectual disabled patients at Level 3 Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Town. People with severe intellectual disabilities require constant care and supervision which can only be provided in specialised units. In the Western Cape, one such facility is a special section for the intellectually disabled at a level three hospital. Intellectual disability is a serious lifelong disability that places a heavy burden on affected individuals. Caring for these patients may affect the individuals who work within the intellectual disability services. This study explores the experiences of nurses who care for these patients. A Phenomenological research design was chosen as the researcher identified it as the most appropriate method to describe the lived experiences of the nurses. Purposive sampling was used to select 10 participants. However, data saturation was reached after interviewing eight participants. Data was collected through in-depth unstructured interviews. The audio-taped responses were transcribed verbatim and phenomenological data analysis done. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Higher Degrees Committee of the University of the Western Cape. Permission to do the research at the level three hospitals was sought from the Associated Psychiatric Hospital Committee. Consent to participate in the study was obtained from the participants, and ethical principles were adhered to. Participants were informed of the right to withdraw at any stage of the study and intervention offered when required. Trustworthiness of the research process was ensured. Findings: from this study the nurses who care for severe/profound intellectual disabled patients reported that they were not adequately prepared to care for these patients. It has also been reported that caring for the severely/profound disabled comes with some consequences, where emotional (negative and positive), physical and professional consequences were mentioned. The shortage of resources was found to be one of the challenges the nurses experienced. The nurses felt unappreciated for the work they did and less supported by their employer.

Full textWright, Archimore Alexander. "The lived experience of registered nurses caring for patient living with HIV/AIDS in Broward County, Florida| A phenomenological inquiry." Thesis, Barry University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10257646.
Full textBackground: Vulnerability, opportunistic infections, and infection-related illnesses, caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), progressively overwhelms the human immune system resulting in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to slowly and non-discriminately spread continentally with dramatic consequences on the life expectancy of anyone who develops this pervasive illness/disease. The virus, HIV is well documented and is commonly transmitted through risky behaviors of human contact, and if left unattended and untreated, leaves a path of destruction and devastation of monumental proportions. HIV/AIDS dramatically leads to long struggles and concerns for human rights and end-of-life (EOL) care.
Purpose: The purpose of this research study was to gain an in-depth epistemology of registered nurses lived experiences in caring for people living with HIV/AIDS in Broward County, Florida. Philosophical Underpinnings: The philosophical underpinnings that directed this study were buried in the interpretivistic paradigm to investigate the meaning of a particular sample of registered nurses using a qualitative research approach.
Method: This study employed a descriptive/interpretive paradigm navigated by Max van Manen’s phenomenological method. Purposive and snow-ball sampling were utilized by the researcher to recruit registered nurses (RNs) for the study. Data collection was acquired using digital voice recorders to conduct semi-structured face-to-face interviews with a maximum of 12 elected participants.
Results: Four major related themes were conclusive from the findings of the study, as unknowing, incapacitating, dejecting, and nurturing, and five sub-themes of swimming in deep waters, exasperating, dreading occupational exposures, feeling of emptiness, and emotional and physical support through this phenomenological descriptive/interpretive exploration. These themes and sub-themes showcased registered nurses experience in providing care to patients living with HIV/AIDS in Broward County, Florida. Margaret Newman’s (1978) grand theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness was the theoretical framework applied to the themes/sub-themes for further understanding.
Conclusion: This phenomenological research inquiry coupled with Max van Manen descriptive/interpretive methodology exhibited the complexity registered nurses endure when providing care to patients living with HIV/AIDS in Broward County, Florida. The results of the study emphasized the quintessence of nurse’s experiences by illuminating the fear of the unknown dealing with the disease HIV/AIDS, in which they displayed courage, resilience, empathy, and nurturing while caring for this fragile population. The experiences described in this study by the participants caring for patients living with HIV/AIDS in Broward, County Florida, highlighted the numerous effects of the disease on healthcare and nurses alike. There is a necessity for a comprehensive approach to make it possible to provide appropriate nursing care that can also address the new threat of HIV infection in Broward County, which has developed rapidly than expected. Participant’s enthusiasm in sharing their life world experience on caring for patients living with HIV/AIDS culminate the general purpose of this phenomenological study.

Full textThis thesis aims to analyze the working conditions surveys (WCSs) in Latin America and to develop a proposal to improve the comparability of future surveys. First, we identified and examined the commonalities and differences in the methodologies of the WCSs available. Next, through a consensus process, a core questionnaire and basic methodological recommendations for future WCSs in the region were developed. In addition, we analyzed data from these surveys in a comparable sample of non-agricultural employees with written contract. Our findings can be summarized as follows: 1) WCSs in Latin America differed mainly in the covered population, the place of interview, and the question wording 2) some patterns of exposure to poor working and employment conditions, and health status were observed in the studied population 3) the final consensus included a core questionnaire for working, employment and health conditions, which comprises 77 questions organized in six dimensions, and main methodological recommendations such as conducting in-home interviews rather than workplace administered interviews. These results may contribute to improve occupational health surveillance in Latin America and the Caribbean.

As the number of elderly people in Taiwan has increased year by year, the health care, social welfare and long-term care of the elderly have become a topic of high concern in the society today. In the 104th year of the Republic of China, the Executive Yuan actively promoted community care through the “Establishment of community caring center implementation plan.” With community care and volunteers involvement, senior citizens can live and work in the community that they are familiar with. At the same time, it also allows their family to get proper rest time. This study takes the volunteers who participated in the community care program in Miaoli County and Changhua County as research objects and analyzes the profiles of volunteers in individual background variables, participation motivation, social support and life satisfaction. Then, the single factor analysis of variance and regression analysis were used to explore the correlation between participation motivation, social support, and life satisfaction. The results were: 1.Volunteers with different background hold varied perspectives towards participation motivation, social support, and life satisfaction. 2.There is a significant difference between the participation motivation of the volunteers and social support. 3.There is a significant difference between the participation motivation of the volunteers and life satisfaction. 4.There is a significant difference between social support and life satisfaction of the volunteers.

The twenty-first century the century of aging population. According to the census of the department of Household Registration,Ministry of Interior, the aging population in Taiwan amounted to one million four hundred and eight thousandpeople in Aug, 1993,which occupied 7.1% of the total population. That is over the 7% index set by the WHO of the UN. And Taiwan has formally become a“ageing society”. Since 1993,the aging population has been on the increase. By2002, the aging population in Taiwan has been over two million people. Moreover, the statistical data of The Depa- rtment of Social Affairs, Ministry of the Interior, shows that, by July,2007, the aging population has reached more than2million312thousand people, occupying 10.09% of the total population. It is over 10%,witch means one in ten Taiwanese is an aged pers- son. In the future, when the proportion is over 14%,Taiwan will futherbecome a real aging society. In our Chinese tardition, we always respect the elderly. However, because the society is fast-changing in these years, and medical technology is developing fast, the average life span has increased a lot and the proportion of the aging populat- tion is also rising. Women becoming career ones have some important effect on the rasing on young children and the caring of the aged. According to the statistics by June, 2008,from the Department of Social Affairs, Ministry of Interior, there are totally 991 apartments for the aged and caring institutes. Among them, there are 9 community caring houses, five apartments for the aged,42 caring institutes, 902 raising institutes and 33 long-term caring institutes. With the tendency of the fast chang of the aging society, institutional form of caring becomes more and more important. This model integrates and unites the strength of family, civic institutes, various groups and the government, and offers the aged the welfare system of complete caring, raising and long-term caring. That will suffice the insufficient function of the family caring to improve the welfare of the aged. The research focuses on the sections concerned of the long-term caring institutes and other caring institutes; we also make use of the model of CORPs to do the research on the follwing questions and hope that in the process of research, we can find out some problems and raise some suggestions to solve them. 1. To understand the ways of executive measures by Hualien County Government in the caring institutes. 2. To understand the measures and effects to care for the aging inhabitants in every caring institute. 3. To review the requirements of the aging inhabitants about the caring measures in the institutes.

In Taitung County, owing to the fact that the elderly represent 13% of the total population, the Community Caring Center plays an important role for caring for the elderly. The aim of this research is to explore the operation of the Community Caring Center in Taitung County. Data were collected by means of observation and interview. The findings: 1. Most of the Community Caring Center in Taitung Count is found by the association. 2. The majority of staff in the Community Caring Center is employed by the association, not volunteers. 3. The density of the Community Caring Center in Taitung County is the highest in Taiwan. However, the community caring service of caring for elderly has not yet been effectively implemented. 4. In respect of founds for operation of the Community Caring Center, most associations of business rely on the application of the government subsidy to operate the caring center instead of on “user charges”. 5. As Taitung County Government grants ingredients, the primary type of service provided by the caring center is the food service. 6. The counseling of the caring center is not properly implemented. Therefore, the evaluation score of the caring center in Taitung County is lower than that in other cities and counties in Taiwan. Suggestions according to the findings: It is necessary for the business unit operating the caring center to proactively expand the community resources. For example, the residents of the community could be the critical human resources for community caring for elderly. In addition, the business unit should expand social resources outside the government and promote “user charges” for operation. Finally, in order to achieve the internal cooperation, the senior business unit needs to assist the puisne.

Most of the social welfare organizations are supported by Non-Profit Organizations (NPO) and financed by donations and government subsidies. Due to economic recession, financial aids from the public were decreasing. With their deteriorating financial situations, social organizations are unable to expand their services and their survival environment is under threat. Faced with financial difficulties, many NPOs have transformed into social enterprises and thereby generate profits for their own survival in order to promote public welfare perpetually. Social enterprises rely on government’s subsidies for their initial development. The government has established a number of programs to solve the problems faced by the social vulnerable groups, to facilitate youth employment, and to support the social enterprises’ sustainable development. For example, the Multi-Employment Promotion Program and Empowering Employment Program are designed for this purpose. This study focused on The Carpenter’s House Caring Center, an outstanding social enterprise in Taoyuan City, in an attempt to identify the problems as well as the pros and cons associated with both programs using in-depth interviews for the developing social enterprises’ reference.

Over the difference in sex, significant differences are found on part of the stratified aspects of caring for self. Over the difference in family structure, significant differences are found on part of the stratified aspects of caring for self. As to SES, significant differences are found on different aspects of caring for self. 5. The relationship between cultural capital and caring for self of elementary high grades students is positive correlation. And 33.4% and 4.8% variance in caring for self can be effectively predicted by cultural capital through two canonical coefficients. According to the findings above, some suggestions are made: 1. About family education, including: pay attention to children’s school life, and improve the benign interaction of parents and children; for the education of children, try to achieve sex equality positively in educational ways; construct good learning and growth environments, and enrich children’s cultural capital; provide adaptive educational resources and correct ideas to children timely. 2. About school education, including: provide good school education environment, and give parents some suggestions timely about participation in education; teachers should hold equal-sexual ideas and give children the same chances to practice caring; unclog the communication channels of teachers and parents, and pay attention to positive discriminiation. 3. About future studies, including: discuss other relative variables; broaden the research ranges and research subjects; add the ways of interviews.

Abstract Catch species of Giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis) at Mangfong set-net fishing company in the southwestern Taiwan waters (Chuken village, Pingtung County) was selected to study. Factors, including changes of annual and monthly catch and market values, changes of Catch per unit effort (CPUE) time series, different body sizes, sea surface water temperature (SST) change relationship, and fishing situations at spring and neap tides, contributing to the changes and differences of Giant trevally resources were investigated and analyzed in the set-net fishery. Catch data sampled in the study were from October, 2004 to June, 2012 with a total of 8 years on catch amount, tide variation and SST. Microsoft Excel and Statistica statistical software were used for catch analysis with Two-Way ANOVA, correlation analysis and regression analysis for the investigation of changes of CPUE of Giant trevally resources. Results were as followings: 1. There were no significant differences in the annual CPUE between Giant trevally and other species. However, there were significant differences in the monthly CPUE between Giant trevally and other species (P <0.01). 2. There were significant differences in the monthly catch amount of Giant trevally in May and June comparing to other months. Catch amount in May is larger than that in June. There were no significant differences in other months. 3. CPUE of Giant trevally and other species increases when monthly average SST increased. Catch amounts were highest in May and June when average SST was highest. 4. Annual production was predominantly large-sized fish. Production amount was significantly different between large-sized and medium-size fish, and between large-sized and small-sized fish. The production amount was highest for large-sized fish, followed by small-sized and medium-sized ones. 5. Average catch amount was significantly higher in neap tide compared to spring tide duration. Catch amounts were highest in May and June when neap tide as compared to other months when spring tide (p<0.01). Based on the above results, catch amount of Giant trevally in Mangfong set-net fishing company became higher in neap tide duration, and when SST was high especially in May and June. Catch was predominantly large-sized Giant trevally. Keywords: Mangfong set-net fishery, Otoshi-ami set-net, Giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis), Fishing condition analysis

The Title of the Thesis: The Study of Caring Problems, Total page: 91Needs, and Expectation of the Supportive Programs of the Community Care Related PFC of the Elderly Suffering Chronic Disease at Home─The Case of Da Li City, Taichung CountyUniversity: National Chi Nan University Class Level: Graduate Class for MA degree, Dept. of Social Policy and Social WorkDate of Graduation: The 2nd Semester of 1998Candidate for MA degree: Lin Huey ChenDirector of the Thesis: Dr. YI-CHANG CHANThe Outline of the Thesis is as follows:Owing to the rapid growth of the aged in our society, the insufficiency of health care system devoted to the long term care of the elderly and the change of traditional family ways of living, the need for the long-term care of the elderly has become a critical issue. Based on important books in the West and East(China in particular), family centered private care system, instead of nursing homes, is always a preferable way to take care of the elderly and accordingly, the most commonly accepted way to take care of the elderly in our society. With the change of society, traditional family structure has not only disintegrated but also become more and more complicated. The rate of birth has significantly dropped and on the other hand, the rate of women labor participation is on the rise. These are the elements that inevitably affected the traditional way of taking care of the elderly at home. Because of the ‘deinstitutionalization’ and the ‘awareness of the welfare community care system of the elderly have become an essential part of a modern society. In other words, if it is possible, the elderly should stay in a place where they can be at ease, a place like home. Therefore, the program of taking care of the elderly, to the social welfare organizations and to the health care system. This thesis focuses on an analysis of family care of the elderly paying special attention to the family care-givers. The analysis includes four parts: 1. The current long term care facilities available in the community of Da Li City 2. The problems and concern of those Primary Family Care-givers (PFC) 3. The need of those PFC. 4. The expectation and viewpoints of the interviewers on the program of community care facility of the elderly. This thesis aims to take a closer look at the present condition of long term care of the elderly interviewing people who are the PFC. Based on the contents of the interview, the outlines include four aspects:1. The problems and concern of the PFC2. The need of the PFC3. Viewpoints of the interviewers concerning the community’s care facilities and the supportive programs. As to the interview, 11 samples of the PFC are interviewed and the interview is recorded accordingly. The analysis of the interview is as follows: Among the 11 samples, the role they play in the family can be classified as follows: 8 are females; 6 are in the role of daughter and son (4 daughters and 2 sons); 4 in the role of spouse (3 wives and 1 husband) and 1 in the role of daughter-in-law. The numbers of female roles of those who take care of the elderly at home exceed those of male roles. As to the need of those who take care of the elderly at home, financial support or economic condition of the family is the major concern that will eventually affect the quality and the way they choose to take care of the elderly. The 11 samples discuss widely on the service offered by nursing home. They wonder whether the price is reasonable and affordable. The distance of the nursing homes, they also show interest on a variety of alternative programs that offer service to take care of the elderly. The so-called ‘compensation program’ as a feasible way for the long term care of the elderly that combines family care and care offered by private nurses at the home of the elderly.Based on the result of the study and findings, my proposals are as follows:1. Policy:To promote the program of the community care of the elderly in compliance with the government policy. To unite the medical facilities available in Da Li City and encourage the social and government organizations to join together in order to plan the community care system. To regulate the administration standard of the nursing homes as well as the standard of the service charge. To have access to the organizations of nursing homes in the neighboring counties and villages, to establish networks to enable fast service and to develop alternative ways of community care of the elderly and make them available to the public.2. Pragmatic approaches: To allow the medical facilities in the region, the professionals of social and political spheres and the spheres and the specialists of the related fields to participate in the program of community care and to back up the plan as well as all the related matters such as, research, promotion and development. 3. Viewpoints for further study: There are several issues which can be further discussed such as, the issue of female roles in the long-term care of the elderly, the issue of filial piety with regard to the care of the elderly as well as a profound understanding of the inner world of those who take care of the elderly focusing on how they manage to adjust themselves to the daily work of taking care of the elderly. In addition, it is also worth discussing the suitability of the policy and how the policy-markers, the scholars and the specialistsevaluate the policy. Finally, from the macro-perspective, I expect that this program can be carried out in accordance with the government’s advocating of the spiritual reform of people and society and with the spreading of the philosophy of the Chapter Da Tong in the Book of Rites. From the ethical perspective, with the reinforcement of family function, the concept of filial piety and the perpetuity of family, the problems of taking care of the aged population can be gradually solved.

This study is to explore the relationship among daycare service quality, parent-teacher interaction, brand image and continuing caring intention perceived by parents with two- and six-year-old young children. This study uses a quantitative survey method and Daycare Service Quality, Parent-teacher Interaction, Brand Image, Continuing Care Intention Scales and Background Questionnaire are used as measure instruments. A random sampling technique is provided and 469 subjects are selected as the survey sample with 95.2 return rate and 97.7% valid rate. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation and stepwise regression are used for the data analysis. The findings are as followed: 1. Average of subscales of daycare service quality are all above 4 with responsiveness subscale the highest and care subscale the lowest. 2. Average of subscales of parent-teacher interaction are all above 4 with attitude perceived by parents subscale the highest and content of interaction subscale the lowest. 3. Average of subscales of brand image are all above 4 with functional subscale the highest and experiential subscale the lowest. 4. Average of continuing care intention is above 4. 5. Parents with different background variable have various perception on daycare service quality. 6. Parents with different background variable have various perception on parent-teacher interaction. 7. There are a positive correlation existed among daycare service quality, parent-teacher interaction, brand image and continuing care intention. 8. The experiential subscale of brand image, physical plant subscale of daycare service quality and symbolic subscale of brand image have a moderate predictability (29%) toward parent’s continuing care intention. The following suggestions are proposed as followed: 1. Sample of this study uses a daycare setting leaguer in Taipei County. Although this study uses the random sampling technique, the results can not be inferred to other leaguers and other County. 2. Later study might use a qualitative method, i.e., a phenomenal approach to explore parent’s continuing care intention.
