Boffo, Vanna, Sabina Falconi, and Tamara Zappaterra, eds. Per una formazione al lavoro. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6655-304-5.

Abstract:
The volume is a collection of the papers from a study seminar held at the University of Florence Faculty of Education and Training Sciences in March 2012 entitled Formazione e orientamento al lavoro. Le sfide della disabilità adulta. The aim of the initiative was to highlight a topic/problem which has little or no resonance in civil society, or in study and research contexts, namely, training and career guidance for disabled adults. The volume also recounts a course of studies carried out by Le Rose, a cooperative from the municipality of Florence, involving empirical research on the relationship between disability and job placement. As well as proposing an interdisciplinary and multifaceted reflection on a definitely innovative topic, the intention is to emphasize the central place of work in the lives of all people and the role that suitable education and training plays in constructing the adult identity. Care for the place where the job training is carried out, as well as attention to the relationships and actions pursued by the workers undertaking to develop job placement programmes, are central dimensions for the construction of a renewed culture of inclusion, citizenship and social and personal recognition.

Milgrom, Jacob. Leviticus 1–16. Doubleday, 1991. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9780300261110.

Full text
Abstract:
At the beginning of his academic career, author Jacob Milgrom determined to make his lifework a probing study of the Laws of the Torah. Here, with Leviticus 1-16, the first of three volumes on Leviticus, he has reached the pinnacle of his long pursuit. No other contemporary commentary matches Milgrom’s comprehensive work on this much misunderstood and often underappreciated biblical book. In this richly detailed volume, the author traverses the shoals of legal thought and liturgical practice in ancient Israel. He clearly explains the role of the Tabernacle of the Wilderness as the all-important center of Israelite worship, the locus of the priestly orders, sacrificial rituals, and practices of purity to which the congregation repaired for penitence and reconciliation, restoration and renewal. At the heart of the dwelling place of God was the real presence of the God of Israel, present through his splendor in the midst of the camp and the congregation – a permanent sign of the unique privilege and responsibility of Israel, perceived as a worshipping and serving people.

Abstract:
Until the appearance of his Piano Sonata in 1946, and Sonata for Violoncello and Piano in 1948 Carter seemed to lack a distinctive voice. Aaron Copland, a close friend, taunted Carter about the “difficulty” of works that Carter had tried to make accessible, and did not mention Carter in an important 1948 article on emerging composers. Carter’s music at this time, however, was moving in new directions. The two sonatas for the first time deploy the distinctive formal and contrapuntal techniques of his mature style. Their idioms also reflect Carter’s realignment with ultra-modernism in his renewed friendship with Varèse and involvement with the publication and performance of Ives’ works. The appearance of metrical modulation in the Cello Sonata, an innovative approach to rhythmic organization, also sprang from Rudolf Kolisch’s study of tempo in Beethoven’s music.

Abstract:
This chapter is both an epilogue, tracing the story of the last years of Rose Schneiderman, Pauline Newman, Clara Lemlich and Fannia Cohn, and a reflection on their legacies. It examines the ways that they shaped collective memory of the early industrial labor and woman suffrage movements, of the Triangle Fire and the struggle for labor protections. Finally it examines the way the emergence of women’s history as a field renewed interest in these women’s careers and the causes to which they devoted their lives.

Abstract:
This chapter details Mancini's career in the late 1980s. The 1980s was another transitional period in the whole field of film scoring. The intrepid John Williams still ruled with one prestigious assignment after another, prodded by but not dependent on his associations with directors Spielberg and Lucas. Other veterans enjoyed renewed success during these years: John Barry's Oscar win for Dances with Wolves and Dave Grusin's scores for The Fabulous Baker Boys and The Firm. The new breed was beginning to take over, though; James Horner wrote blandly but appropriately for Field of Dreams, Hans Zimmer similarly for Rain Man. Meanwhile, Mancini was scoring three limited-release films: Physical Evidence, Fear, and Welcome Home.

Abstract:
During the 1960s, Bester drifted away from SF for a second time and largely gave up fiction writing to work as an editor at Holiday magazine. When he returned to the field in the early 1970s, he found his reputation at an all-time high, in part because writers associated with the New Wave—Michael Moorcock, Samuel R. Delany, and Harlan Ellison, among them—had praised his work. This chapter looks at the ups and downs of Bester’s late career, giving particular attention to “The Four Hour Fugue,” Golem100, and the story collections The Light Fantastic and Star Light, Star Bright. It also discusses renewed interest in Bester’s fiction during the 1980s and his influence on cyberpunk.
