Hubbard, Philippa. "The art of advertising : trade cards in eighteenth-century consumer cultures." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2009. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/2272/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines graphic trade cards in eighteenth-century consumer cultures in Britain, France and North America. Trade cards were single-sheet commercial notices promoting the names and locations of individual trades-people alongside the goods and services they supplied. They formed part of a larger category of prints distributing economic information to buyers and sellers. However, the production, role and function of trade cards made them distinct from other forms of commercial advertising. I examine their modes of production and use to suggest the part they played in the professionalisation of retail practices as well as the fashioning of vocational identities for tradesmen. I consider the consumer profile that trade cards targeted and suggest that they appealed to distinct sets of shoppers who read the cards in conjunction with other texts, graphic prints and educative illustrations in books and magazines. Trade cards functioned as multimedia advertisements for an audience interested in cultures of knowledge as well as shopping and new consumer goods. I examine how early engravers used trade card commissions to raise their profile as imaginative artists. I consider the ways in which trade cards supported long-term socioeconomic relationships between buyers and sellers over time and space, and examine their roles as invoices and gifts in systems of credit. I am particularly interested in understanding how trade cards functioned uniquely as promotional notices and mediatory devices for a limited period in the history of consumer culture. The final chapter examines French and American trade cards. In their national contexts, trade cards advertised through a culturally-encoded graphic and textual vocabulary familiar to native consumers. They helped develop and disseminate the emblems and symbols that promoted national identities, agendas and priorities at the end of the eighteenth century. I extend this analysis beyond national geographic boundaries to demonstrate how trade cards also functioned as international business cards, supporting commercial networks in global trade.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the iconography of the sacrifice of Isaac in a group of Hispanic medieval works dating from the seventh century to the twelfth century. The research focuses on the modes of transmission of models and visual patterns of a particular figurative repertoire applying the iconographic method as an analytical tool, where a particular concern is the interactions between text and image. The story, arising from Genesis 22, has generated an exegetical apparatus whose bibliography is almost unreachable and has served to Christianity to assimilate the subject of the Old Testament from multiple perspectives, among which the most important is the typological interpretation of the Passion of Christ. Therefore, the premise is that of an image produced from an existing text. The initial approach departs from the assumption of the existence of a stable iconography whose deviations should be explained better if we assume a literary source for every single iconographic motif. This thesis analyses the limits of this hypothesis. A research of this nature is only possible with a corpus that collects as much information as possible for each artwork to study, along with the most current and relevant data in order to provide a descriptive, critical and bibliographical apparatus. The systematization of this catalogue is one of the contributions of this thesis, because it can serve for future research. The decision to develop an iconographic catalogue as a research tool implies a theoretical and methodological contextualization. On the other hand, it emphasizes that iconographic analysis leads, naturally, to the management of taxonomies. Furthermore, the creation of this catalogue is an unavoidable task. The heuristic principle of cataloguing constitutes the premise not only in the process of traditional systematization of a corpus, but also in the migration to the digital world. Therefore, one of the decisions associated with the creation of the catalogue has been the development of computer software, called Iconoteca, in order to manage all the information collected during the research process to include not only the artworks but also the images associated on each item. The bulk of the thesis consists of the corpus of artworks with representations of the sacrifice of Isaac. The text design of the corpus functions as a query tool and the reader can consult the catalogue modularly in a random manner. The result of such taxonomic approach provides a sound basis for developing and testing hypotheses, such as the relationship between text and image in the iconography of the sacrifice of Isaac. The last chapter develops this approach and consists of a review and a thorough analysis of some iconographic peculiarities of the subject in Spanish medieval art. These peculiarities, although known, had not always received specific attention and this thesis proposes a renewed interpretation.

Dilla, Martí Ramon. "Sant Ramon de Penyafort. Imatge, devoció i santedat." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/418807.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis analyses the representations of the catalan Dominican Raymond of Penafort (c.1185-1275). Raymond was probably the most famous and respected jurist in canon law of his time. After occupying the Chair of canon law at the University of Bologna, he received the Dominican habit in Barcelona in 1222, and begun a promising career inside the Order of Preachers, that reached the nomination as Great Master in 1239. During those years, Raymond also became a famous writer after his Summa de casibus poenitentiae, a book of cases for confessors. Knowing Raymond's reputation in the juridical sciences, Gregory IX appointed him chaplain and grand penitentiary, and also commissioned him the compilation of the Decretales, the most important collection of canon laws approved officially in 1234, that became a Standard until 1917. After Raymond’s death in the convent of Santa Caterina of Barcelona, his tomb was the scenario of different miraculous healings attributed to the friar’s intercession. This fact attracted many pilgrims and encouraged his brothers to begin a canonization process to ascend Raymond to the glory of the altars. The main objective of the thesis is the study of Raymond’s representations as confluence between art, sanctity and devotion in the modern era. Although the work is chronologically focused in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, in first instance are closely studied the medieval representations of the friar, in order to observe in a wide and transverse view the genesis, evolution and variants experienced on the iconography of the friar before and after his canonization, held in Rome in 1601.

Abstract:
This work is focused on the study of Monuments of Easter in Barcelona’s Cathedral along modern and contemporary ages. We call “monument” as the liturgical and artistic piece that is dedicated to keep the Holy Sacrament from Thursday to Friday inside churches and that later, is given to remember the Sacrifice of Christ to catholic community. The study is based on Barcelona’s cathedral, and it explains all the ephemeral structures (most of them made of woodworks, paintings, sculpture pieces and architectonic designs) that were used to look after the Holy Form for this important calendar days. This thesis is presented not only as an study of historical and artistic meaning, but provides both sociological and theological interpretations around this sort of pieces. Besides, our study explains the prominence of the monument that played a crucial role in the religious liturgy inside Church. The relevance of these works is shown with the participation of important Catalan painters, sculptors and architects such: Antoni Viladomat, Josep Sunyer, Josep Oriol Mestres, August Font, Enric Sagnier, etc. Finally this work unveil new information coming from archives and gets enriched of some additional artistic pieces that were given for missing but that luckily have been saved and studied. To sum up, this research tries to open new fields of study about this subject.

Abstract:
Governments around the world are investing heavily in smart card infrastructure to enhance transport services. Studies show that smart card technology can improve reliability, reduce maintenance costs, provide a longer life span, and allow more applications to be incorporated in a transit card. As a result, policy makers and transport owners are interested in extending the use of smart cards from transit to non-transit systems to capitalise on their investment. However, little is known about the conditions under which customers would adopt transit cards for non-transit transactions. In Singapore, a contactless transit smart card (ez-link card) was launched in April 2002 to replace the magnetic stored-value card, which was commissioned in December 1990. The ez-link card was introduced as an integrated public transport card for use both on buses and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) trains. This study was undertaken to evaluate customers' response to the use of the ez-link card for non-transit transactions. As the ez-link card is an information technology (IT) product and the first of its kind in the Singapore public transport system, there is a need to understand and appreciate how customers would respond to the change in its use. Various theories and models such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Theory of Diffusion (TD), Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) and Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) were reviewed for their potential to understand and predict customers' intentions to use the ez-link card for non-transit transactions. After much review, the TPB was adopted for identifying the research model and hypotheses in this study. The TPB was used to develop the research model and hypotheses comprising one dependent variable (intention – INT) and three independent variables (attitude - ATT, subjective norm - SN and perceived behavioral control - PBC). The TPB was also used to design the questionnaire comprising 16 items to collect data from customers using the ez-link card at bus interchanges and train stations located around Singapore. A pilot survey was conducted on 21 respondents using the intercept interview technique. The data were collected and analysed. With slight modifications, the questionnaire was then used with 300 respondents in the final survey. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data collected from 293 respondents (seven were outliers) using the intercept interview technique in the final survey. Regression analysis explained 80% of the variance in the customers' intention to use the ez-link card for non-transit transactions. While the results provided initial support for the TPB, further examination of the data using exploratory factor analysis revealed high correlations between the ATT and SN. This study concluded that a more parsimonious model would only extract two independent variables (Desirability - DES and Perceived Convenience – PEC) to predict customers' intention to use the ez-link card for non-transit transactions. DES and PEC were used to develop a new

Abstract:
This auto-ethnographic study focuses on Houston’s art car community and the grassroots movement’s 25 year relationship with the city through an art form that has created a sense of community. Art cars transform ordinary vehicles into personally conceived visions through spectacle, disrupting status quo messages of dominant culture regarding automobiles and norms of ownership and operation. An annual parade is an egalitarian space for display and performance, including art cars created by individuals who drive their personally modified vehicles every day, occasional entries by internationally renowned artists, and entries created by youth groups. A locally proactive public has created a movement has co-opted the cultural spectacle, creating a community of practice. I studied the events of the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art’s Art Car Weekend to give me insight into art and its value for people in this community. Sources of data included the creation of a participatory art car, journaling, field observation, and semi-structured interviews. The first part is my academic grounding, informed by critical pedagogy and socially reconstructive art practices. The second part narrates my experiences and understandings of the community along with the voices of others. Dominant themes of exploration include empowerment, community, and art. I examine the purposes for participation by artists, as well in the practices of audiences and organizations that provide support for this art form. My findings have significant implications community-based art education and k-12 classroom educators. Relational and dialogic approaches to making art, teaching, and researching are tied to problem-posing education as a recommendation for art education.

Abstract:
Software has never been as important as today – and its impact on life, work and society is growing at an impressive rate. We are in the flow of a software-induced transformation of nearly all aspects of our way of life and work. The dependence on software has become almost total. Malfunctions and unavailability may threaten vital areas of our society, life and work at any time. The two massive challenges of software are one hand the complexity of the software and on the other hand the disruptive environment. Complexity of the software is a result of the size, the continuously growing functionality, the more complicated technology and the growing networking. The unfortunate consequence is that complexity leads to many problems in design, development, evolution and operation of software-systems, especially of large software-systems. All software-systems live in an environment. Many of today’s environments can be disruptive and cause severe problems for the systems and their users. Examples of disruptions are attacks, failures of partner systems or networks, faults in communications or malicious activities. Traditionally, both growing complexity and disruptions from the environment have been tackled by better and better software engineering. The development and operating processes are constantly being improved and more powerful engineering tools are introduced. For defending against disruptions, predictive methods – such as risk analysis or fault trees – are used. All this techniques are based on the ingenuity, experience and skills of the engineers! However, the growing complexity and the increasing intensity of possible disruptions from the environment make it more and more questionable, if people are really able to successfully cope with this raising challenge in the future. Already, serious research suggests that this is not the case anymore and that we need assistance from the software-systems themselves! Here enters “autonomic computing” – A promising branch of software science which enables software-systems with self-configuring, self-healing, self-optimization and self-protection capabilities. Autonomic computing systems are able to re-organize, optimize, defend and adapt themselves with no real-time human intervention. Abstract:

The last decade’s discussions concerning the climate changes have started different counter measurements in order to save the environment. One of these is to reduce the carbon discharges by pushing the car industry towards an introduction of environmental friendly cars. The increased sales of environmental friendly cars in Sweden made us want to investigate the concept and its users.

The main purpose with this dissertation was to identify the most typical buyer of environmentally friendly cars and study which factors affect them in the purchase of one. This was done by emphasizing on peoples environmental attitude, behavior and demographic factors. Further the marketing mix together with political/economical stimuli stood for the affecting factors towards a purchase of an environmental friendly car.

To answer our research questions we chose to collect our primary data through the research strategy of a self administered questionnaire. The sample consisted of 90 respondents.

The findings of our dissertation showed that elder women born in Sweden, parents of children and with a high social status are the most typical buyers of environmental friendly cars. Safety was the most important factor to base a car purchase on among the respondents. TV was seen as the most affecting information source concerning gained information about the eco friendly cars.

Abstract:
The purpose of this mixed-method study was to explore the instructional changes in first grade classrooms and reading progress of first grade students in relation to implementation of standards-based report cards (SBRC). The goal of this study, conducted in a suburban Texas school district, was to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference in reading progress between students enrolled in first grade classrooms in which traditional report cards were used in comparison to comparable classrooms in which SBRCs were used. Additionally, the instructional practices of teachers were examined to determine the types of changes that took place as the district moved from traditional report cards to SBRCs. A total of 709 students and 15 teachers were involved in the study. The study revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between the reading growth of students assessed in SBRC classrooms and those assessed with traditional report cards. There were, however, significant differences in instructional practices employed by teachers in SBRC classrooms. These changes in practice included instructing with a greater degree of focus on specific objectives to be taught, more closely following the district’s scope and sequence, greater communication regarding the grading criteria and methods used for reporting progress, use of the most recent achievement data when determining grades (in comparison to averaging of grades during a reporting period), and a greater awareness of students’ specific abilities.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay analyses the extent to which individuals who bought Triss in Värnamo at Hemköp are rational in their decision to buy Triss. The expected value was found to be lower than the price of the Triss ticket. The results from the experiment suggests the individuals act irrationally as they did not accept to exchange their Triss for another Triss and an additional Mini Triss. The data from the observation suggests that individuals with a winning Triss tend to exchange it for a new Triss when the amount won is relatively small. When the amount won was relatively larger, the more likely the individuals were to claim the money. When a jackpot Triss was sold in the store, there was no significant increase of sales of Triss in the store, hence the individuals in the store did act rational in the sense they did not buy more or less Triss because of the jackpot was sold in the store. The results found in this paper suggest that individuals who buy Triss acts with a bounded rationality since their decision of buying Triss are driven by emotions, poor understanding of probabilities and risk under uncertainties.

Abstract:
Few studies have proposed or evaluated methods to teach telling time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of differential reinforcement of student responding in the form of response cards to teach three middle school students with intellectual disability to tell time. Participants worked through six training phases. Results showed that correct responding increased from pre-assessment (range of 5.71-14.29% correct) to post-assessment (range of 85-100% correct). Preliminary evidence shows promise in the application of these procedures to teach telling time to middle school students with intellectual disability.

Abstract:
Automotive manufacturers are competing to be the first to introduce customer-ready autonomous vehicles. Some manufacturers are claiming to launch their first self-driving cars as early as 2020. Which all sounds very good and futuristic; however, the question arises, are customers even ready to adopt this new technological advancement? Therefore, this pilot study is aimed at finding out the answer to this question in the Austrian market. This study discovers the standpoint of Austrian consumers concerning the acceptance of self-driving cars for daily usage and gives an overview of the current point of view regarding autonomous vehicles (AVs). The data for this study was collected using an online, user-friendly, Likert scale survey. The collected data were processed and analyzed for empirical significance in SPSS using Spearman's rank correlation and the Mann-Whitney U test supported by descriptive analysis. The results of the study indicate that Austrian consumers are well aware of autonomous vehicles and their technology. However, they have specific concerns about reliability, cybersecurity, and futuristic car-sharing models. Therefore, these concerns about AVs should be addressed by auto manufactures in order to gain consumers' trust and sell them a new form of mobility.

Abstract:
'The possibilities that the technology can offer are seemingly endless and remain to be fully explored in [visual] art education." (Callow. 2001. p,43) The aim of this research is to investigate whether the integration of Visual Arts Technology Tools (TECH-TOOLS) into Traditional Visual Arts Programs (TRAD-['ROG) enhance the students' learning in terms of Arts Ideas (AI) and Arts Skills and Processes (ASP) and whether it is a cost effective option for Western Australian primary schools. To determine whether it is worth the inclusion of TECH-TOOLS in terms of enhancing learning. this research will statistically state whether the combination of TECH-TOOLS and Traditional Visual Arts Media (TRAD-MEDIA) enhance the expressive outcomes of Year Seven boys' artwork. The comparative case study method has been chosen as the most suitable method to enable the Researcher to establish the impact that combining TECH-TOOLS with TRAD-MEDIA have upon Year Seven boys' artwork. The Control group only used TRAD-MEDIA and the Experimental group used both TRAD-MEDIA and TECH-TOOLS to create a piece of artwork based on the chosen theme, Character Cars. There were 23 students in the Control group and 24 students in the Experimental group, however not all students attempted or completed the task for reasons which will be explained in Chapter Four. Each group was involved in three sequenced activities based on the chosen theme, with the second activity varying only according to the media used to complete the task. Combinations of quantitative and qualitative methods have been used in this research. To present quantitative data which provides insights into whether Visual Arts (VA) teachers should be combining TECH-TOOLS with TRAD-MEDIA in their Visual Arts Programs (VAP), each piece of artwork was assessed and analysed using descriptive analysis of the data. Each participant completed a written feedback form outlining their attitudes, feelings and thoughts about their artwork and the media that they used. The Researcher and an independent Visual Arts Education (V AE) expert also took anecdotal records during the VA activities with the aim of recording the participants' involvement and enjoyment of the activities. This study is significantly different from the current research in this area u!; it will: provide quantitative data which will demonstrate Whether the combination of TECH-TOOLS and TRAD-MEDlA enhances students' artwork; link the relevant literature and findings of this study to the Western Australian primary school context; provide links to the Western Australian Curriculum Council's Curriculum Framework; and comment on the influence of gender in VAE. All of these factors contribute to the uniqueness of this study.

Abstract:
The artistic is always political, even if not overtly so—each work carries with it the histories of the artist, the means of production, the subject matter, and the many art historical precedents that overlap and diverge to constitute the theoretical circumstances surrounding it. Since I began translating my lived experience into artworks, I have become interested in the ways in which my personal politics have affected the choices I have made in material and narrative substance. This is a deconstruction of the politics of representation as a method for better understanding the art historical context in which contemporary materials- and performance-based art work exists and to conceptually develop the work I want to produce in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
The Swedish Social Services Act (2001:453) states that crime victims should be a priority group for the social services and that they have a responsibility to ensure that victims receive the needed help and support. The aim with this study was to examine how the Swedish municipal social services fulfil their responsibility for the psychosocial wellbeing of crime victims, by examining the collaboration between Victim Support and the social services. Interviews were conducted with crime victims, crime victim coordinators and social workers. The social services have an overall responsibility for the psy-chosocial support to crime victims. However, the study show that in reality the social services, in many cases, do not provide this help and support, as there is a view that it is not their responsibility. Instead, the victims are referred to various support organisations such as Victim Support, without really knowing what kind of support they are offering. Furthermore, the social services in some mu-nicipalities argue that there is no opportunity for them to collaborate with Victim Support due to con-fidentiality, even though it is possible in other municipalities. Through collaboration resources can be saved, and knowledge and awareness of the victims’ needs can be increased. This can eventually lead to that victims’ receive better care, which can result in shorter recovery time for crisis that may have occurred due to the experience of crime.

From the scientific viewpoint, the word ?uncertainty? expresses doubt about an analytic result. The implementation of the concept of uncertainty of measurement is a crucial step that the Brazilian laboratories must take in the process for obtaining the certification of the ability to perform essays in accordance with the Brazilian technical norm ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025. Regardless the technical area of application, the determination of the uncertainty of measurement associated with the result of an analysis is extremely important, especially in the food industry. The expanded uncertainty is related with the degree of reliability of an analytical result, and by means of this information it is possible to evaluate if the result of an analysis is consistent, i.e., if the uncertainty associated to the measurement remains inside an acceptable range. When the percentage of uncertainty exceeds a threshold, it is necessary to find the process variables that more intensely contribute to increasing the uncertainty and, in the sequence, to take corrective actions in order to minimize the impact caused for those variables over the uncertainty of measurement. The aim of this study was to detect the uncertainty of measurement associated with the analysis of total reducing sugars (TRS) by the Lane-Eynon method. The equipments used were analytical and semi analytical balances, burettes with 10mL and 25mL, and the food matrix studied was wild honey. To perform the calculations of the standard uncertainty, u, information about the uncertainty of the laboratory materials used in the analysis ? obtained from the certificate of calibration. The combined uncertainty, uc, was obtained by deriving the influence factors and considering, if necessary, the effective degree of freedom, ?eff, as stated in the Welch-Satterthwaite equation. The expanded uncertainty, U, was obtained by multiplying uc by the appropriate coverage factor, k = 2 (at level of confidence of 95,45%). The results showed that the expanded uncertainty obtained for the analysis of TRS was less than 2,0% when the analytical balance was used. The process variable having the greatest impact was the volume (close to 80,0%), followed by the title (close to 20,0%). The analysis of the expanded uncertainty obtained for the analysis of TRS when the semi analytical balance, and 10mL as well as 25mL burettes were used provided reliable results. However, care must be taken in such a combination of equipments, especially when using the 25mL burettes, since the percentage of uncertainty was great than 3,5%, too close to the limit established by the Codex Alimentarius, 4,0%. It was observed that, in this case, the variable having the greatest impact on the uncertainty was the title, with 79,82% (10mL burettes), and 87,10% (25mL burettes).

Abstract:
Purpose        The overall purpose is to describe how manufacturing companies involve customers in order to develop new innovations that meet customers’ needs, and furthermore illustrate how the customer involvement process can be managed. By investigating companies in similar industries where the degree of technology and pace of innovation is high, we clarify how, when and with who companies can engage activities for customer involvement.  Method In this qualitative study, we use a deductive approach, where individual interviews were conducted in two case companies.  Theoretical framework In the theoretical framework we introduce the DART-model, in which building blocks of the interaction between companies and customers are treated. Connected to this, we discuss problems regarding transferring customer needs and receiving customer input. Furthermore we highlight conflicting methods of customer involvement, different types of customers to involve and different stages in which the interaction should take place.  Empirical study Empirical data were collected through personal interviews with six business managers at the headquarters of Electrolux and Volvo Cars.  Conclusion  In contrary to the overwhelming literary hype of open innovation where companies are suggested to actively co-create value together with the customers, our findings indicate that companies learn proactively from passive customers in the early stages of the NPD-process to acquire unarticulated needs in order to create customer value. These are conscious decisions to avoid opening up the companies to the customers in terms of transparency and access. This subsequently accompanies the further process for how, when and who to involve, as the process goes from proactive towards stepwise more traditional reactive methods of customer involvement for product innovation

Abstract:
Cancer treatment induces serious biopsychosocial consequences for patients. About 80% of patients feel pain, fatigue, and emotional impact can lead to anxiety. The quality of life (QoL) of people with cancer has become the major concern for the French Governement. Supportive care has developed since 2003 to that end and to lessen the side-effects incidence. It offers different types of monitoring including art-therapy. Prior studies have shown efficacy of therapies that are proposed to hospitalized patients. Improvement of QoL, fatigue and anxiety have been observed. All these studies show efficacy of art-therapy, regardless of duration and types of mediation. This study compares 2 experimental groups involved in different kind of art-therapy, with a control group (N=29). Openness and divergent thinking for creativity, QoL, anxiety and body image are explored with a standard assessment protocol submitted to participants in test and re-test (+3 months). The two art-therapies consist of 3 phases: relaxing, creating and debriefing. The 'Continuous Art-Therapy' (CAT) sessions have no predetermined order, number or theme, while 'Senses and Motives' (SEM) is a structured program of 6 art-therapeutic sessions. The quantitative results show that an art-therapy practice improves the sensation of physical well-being. CAT brings the level of anxiety of its participants down to a healthy level, and opens them to the action, whereas SEM reduces the feeling of fatigue and restores the body image. The qualitative analysis strengthens these findings and adds areas of improvement like self-esteem.An art-therapy program can be conceived with a structure and objectives in order to respond to the patients’ needs: self-esteem and body-image restorations, decreased anxiety. It can associate with medical treatments for a better acceptance or physical well-being

Lyn, Rodney. "Investigating Hepatitis C Virus Interactions with Host Lipid Pathways that are Critical for Viral Propagation Using Small Molecule Inhibitors and Chemical Biology Methods." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/24385.

Full text
Abstract:
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is remarkably capable of efficiently hijacking host cell pathways including lipid metabolism in the liver in order to create pro-viral environments for pathogenesis. It is becoming increasingly clear that identifying small molecule inhibitors that target host factors exploited by the virus will expand available HCV treatment options. As such, a thorough understanding of host-virus interactions is critical to the development of alternative therapeutic strategies. Hepatic lipid droplets (LDs) are recruited by HCV to play essential roles in the viral lifecycle. The intracellular location of LDs is modified upon interacting with viral structural core protein. This enables formation of platforms that support viral particle assembly. Because these interactions are non-static, capturing its dynamic processes in order to better understand viral assembly can be achieved with label-free molecular imaging enhanced with live-cell capabilities. Chemical biology approaches that includes CARS microscopy employed in a multi-modal imaging system was used to probe interactions between HCV and host LDs. By successfully tracking LD trajectories, we identified core protein’s ability to alter LD speed and control for LD directionality. Using protein expression model systems that allowed for simultaneous tracking of core protein and LDs, our data revealed that mutations in the core protein region that vary in hydrophobicity and LD binding strengths, are factors that control for differential modulation of LD kinetics. Furthermore, we measured bidirectional LD travels runs and velocities, and observed critical properties by which core protein induces LD migration towards regions of viral particle assembly. Given that many steps in the HCV lifecycle are directly linked to host lipid metabolism, it is not surprising that disrupting lipid biosynthetic pathways would negatively affect viral replication. From this outlook, we explored small molecule inhibitors that targeted several lipid metabolic pathways to study its antiviral properties. Using fluorescent probes covalently labeled to viral RNA, we captured the visualization of disrupted replication complexes upon antagonizing nuclear hormone receptors that are linked to regulating lipid homeostasis. Correspondingly, biochemistry and molecular imaging techniques were also employed to identify novel antiviral mechanisms of small molecule inhibitors that target additional HCV-dependent lipid metabolic pathways.

In practically all vertical markets and in every region of the planet, loyalty marketers have adopted the tactic of recognition and reward to identify, maintain and increase the yield of their customers. Several strategies have been adopted by companies, and the most popular among them is the loyalty program, which displays a loyalty club to manage these rewards. But the problem with loyalty programs is that customer identification and transfer of loyalty points are made in a semiautomatic. Aiming at this, this paper presents a master's embedded business automation solution called e-Points. The goal of e-Points is munir clubs allegiances with fully automated tooling technology to identify customers directly at the point of sales, ensuring greater control over the loyalty of associate members. For this, we developed a hardware platform with embedded system and RFID technology to be used in PCs tenant, a smart card to accumulate points with every purchase and a web server, which will provide services of interest to retailers and customers membership to the club

Abstract:
The basis of this study was my belief that the introduction of the present privacy legislation had been done in such a "try and see" manner. To me, the whole process "begged" for a much closer look to try to understand the rationale behind successive governments' decisions on this policy initiative. I begin my look at the process from the 1960s as this is when general public concern for the security of personal information was high. I then move to the introduction of the proposed Australia Card and its demise and then to the present. Then, with reference to the "classic" policy analysis authors, I show that the implementation of federal privacy laws in Australia was an excellent example of how not to go about convincing the public the new laws would offer the protection they, the public, sought. I also explore the reasons behind negative lobbying by certain non-government sector interests to demonstrate how this sector has influenced government thinking. As an example of the study of a policy issue this thesis shows the effect a lack of planning, and a terrible lack of communication, can have on the introduction of any new legislation. Much of this is due to the fact that the real issue behind the introduction of privacy legislation was that of increasing taxation revenue and not the protection of individuals' privacy. The privacy legislation was the "sweetener" the government believed was needed to satisfy the general public's concerns so that the government could achieve the desired result for its taxation revenue policy.

Abstract:
This thesis suggests improvements, from a strategic perspective, to the practice of scoring projects in public sector organisations. It is argues that current approaches, notably project portfolio managing (PPM), are inadequate for many such organisations, and in fact prone to problems and failure. In particular, present scoring/prioritization approaches in such contexts, largely tend to focus on financial risk/return logic. It is argued that the end result of such a ranking approach is often a non-strategic portfolio project. To address these problems, the candidate proposed the refinement of the scoring approach for project portfolios via the incorporation of Kaplan & Norton's ideas in their Balanced Scorecard (BSC). BSC introduces, apart from purely financial considerations, other 'softer' perspectives (customer, internal business processes, learning and growth) which in combination place a more inclusive emphasis on the vision and strategy of the organisation. In this thesis, it is proposed that the combined PPM and BSC scoring approach amounts to more strategic project selection. Several case studies are conducted to illustrate the merits of the combined PPM/BSC logic. These include case studies in both private and public sector organisations.

Abstract:
In this practice-based research the use of attachment assessments to assist with decision-making about the placement of children in State care is explored. In Aotearoa New Zealand care and protection legislation emphasises the importance of working with families. The central decision-making forum is the Family Group Conference where families, their support people and statutory social workers come together to work out a plan for children considered to be in need of care and protection. This research focused on conflicted situations where agreement could not be reached about where children should live. The research was structured around one over-arching objective: the examination of a specific aspect of practice, namely the use of attachment assessments in decision-making, with a view to identifying elements of best practice. Within this were three other objectives: an exploration of the impact of attachment assessments on decision-making processes; an exploration of the experience of participants in this process; and an examination of perceived outcomes for children who have an assessment completed. In order to achieve these objectives the historical and cultural context influencing these decision-making processes was explored; the theoretical framework underpinning the use of attachment assessments was critically examined; recent literature on childrens experience in foster care was reviewed; the role of assessment in decision-making was explored; and the use of attachment assessments was evaluated from the perspective of social work practitioners. The outcomes of this research indicate that attachment assessments are theoretically sound processes, which provide relevant information that facilitates decision-making in conflicted situations and the achievement of positive outcomes for children. It was, however, found that attachment assessments have an indirect influence by providing a pivotal point in the decision-making process rather than a direct impact. A number of variables influencing outcomes for children were identified and explored: availability of suitable placements; management of contact with birth family; provision of support networks including attention to ongoing cultural connectedness; and support through adolescence. Childrens absence from participation in decision-making was highlighted. I conclude with an outline of guidelines for best practice.

Denhalter, Darryl Bond. "Holistic Approaches to State School Grading Systems." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8642.

Full text
Abstract:
The United States education system has experienced an evolution of school accountability systems that has led to changes and variation in state school grading systems. This study shows that the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015, a recent reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965, provides greater autonomy to individual states in evaluating and reporting school accountability than in preceding years and provides opportunities for states to implement a more holistic or well-rounded approach to school grading. ESSA policy and this study encourages states to choose to evaluate schools more holistically by implementing a wider and more balanced range of indicators that are used to formulate publicly reported school grades. Many issues and historical events, both in the nation and in Utah, are shared to show their influence on the evolution of school accountability. The relevant components of ESSA are explored. An historical overview of school accountability, standardized testing, school grading, and public educational reporting in the state of Utah is included. Scholarly perspectives about school accountability and reporting systems are also presented. This descriptive study incorporates archival research through a review of grades K-8 school grading systems. The school report card systems and indicators are collected and compared from two sequential time periods: first, the time period after NCLB and before ESSA plans were approved is referred, and second, the current time period, based off of data from currently implemented state ESSA plans. Data from all 50 states and Washington D.C. are analyzed and contrasted with Utah's data. Special focus is placed on the indicators that are not dictated by the federal government but those which are chosen by the state that promote a more holistic measure of accountability. The results from this study show that while a more holistic approach to school grading across the states has resulted from ESSA implementation, Utah's ESSA plan and school grading system, along with the other 49 states and Washington D.C., do not currently reflect an adequate holistic measure of school accountability. State Legislators and State School Board Members will find this study to be enlightening as they create more holistic school grading systems.

Khoory, Haifa. "The feasibility of transferring cells from archived buccal swabs to FTA card for long term and simple storage of forensic samples." University of Western Australia. Centre for Forensic Science, 2008. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2008.0088.

Full text
Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] The collection of buccal cells is common practise in the epidemiological and forensic science. Unlike venipuncture collection of blood; it is a safer, non-invasive method for collection of biological material. The methods by which these cells are collected from the inner cheek of an individual and stored are the key elements in preserving DNA. Typically, forensic samples require long term storage. Samples are commonly collected on cotton swabs and stored moist at low to ultra-low temperatures (less than -20oC). Although this is the method of choice in most forensic facilities, there are drawbacks. The samples are inherently contaminated with microflora within the oral cavity and the moisture allows a plethora of microorganisms to grow. As the time frame that has elapsed from collection to storage increases, there is an exponential increase in bacterial cells. Storage of containers containing swabs coated with cells at temperatures below 20oC is also costly due to requirements for large freezers which are running and monitored over 24 hours. In the pass 10 to 15 years, researchers have focussed on alternative ways to store buccal cells. The FTA card system by Whatman is one such development. The FTA card is unique in that it provides a means for the collection of buccal cells for storage at room temperature. DNA profiling from samples stored in this way for 11 years has been successfully achieved. The filter paper matrix of the FTA card binds and subsequently lyses cells. ... (2) The second component of this thesis describes a study which subjected cells on buccal swabs to various conditions of increased temperature over periods of time to establish if DNA could be amplified. The aim was to mimic exposure to the vigours of field conditions, particularly in the extreme local environments that prevail in the United Arab Emirates. a. Initially, buccal cells stored at -20oC over 360 days were used to mimic standard archiving procedures. The cells were subsequently transferred to FTA cards, amplified and profiled by using ABI AmpFLSTR Identifiler PCR Amplification Kit (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA). Complete STR profiles were successfully recovered from the archived swabs. In most cases 100% of alleles were recovered, suggesting that it is feasible to transfer DNA from properly archived buccal swabs to FTA cards. b. The second phase involved the storage of fresh swabs that had been artificially aged by using incubation temperatures ranging from 40oC to 100oC. Partial profiles resulted from artificially aged samples, indicating that the prevailing conditions prior to low temperature storage of the swabs plays an important role in ensuring cellular integrity and thus, DNA quality. Results from this study suggest that it is possible for biological samples stored under correct conditions to be transferred from swabs to FTA card. In combination, the two chapters presented in this study show that it is feasible to transfer achieved forensic biology samples from swabs to the FTA card system. However, it is necessary to ensure that the samples are treated in the correct manner so as to minimise contamination from external sources and to maintain the correct environmental state to maintain intact cells and usable DNA.

Abstract:
This study examined the effects of switching from an incentive pay system solely based on productivity to a scorecard-based incentive pay system. Performance of staff and senior accountants was analyzed across three departments for a two-year baseline and a three-year intervention period. Results showed that percent of charge hour goal remained high during the study. Once the scorecard-based incentive system was implemented, performance on the other line items increased or remained at or above goal levels. Incentive payouts were generally higher under the second incentive plan than under the first for top performers. Possible explanations for data trends, weaknesses of the measures within the scorecard, measure/line item alternatives and implications for future research are also discussed.

University of Western Australia. Faculty of Business, 2007. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2007.0165.

Full text
Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] Air pollution is increasingly perceived to be a serious intangible threat to humanity, with air quality continuing to deteriorate in most urban areas. The main sources of inner city pollution are motor vehicles, which generate emissions from the tail pipe as well as by evaporation. These contain toxic gaseous components which have adverse health effects. The major components are carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitric oxide (NO), sulphur dioxide (SO2), particulates (PM10), and volatile organic compounds (VOC). CO and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are major emissions from cars. This study focuses on pollutant concentration in Perth city and has sought to develop measures to improve air quality. To estimate concentrations, the study develops air pollution models for CO and NOx; on the basis of the model estimates, effective policy is devised to improve the air quality by managing travel to the city. Two peaks, due to traffic, are observed in hourly CO and NOx concentrations. Unlike traffic, however, the morning peak does not reach the level of the afternoon peak. The reasons for this divergence are assessed and quantified. Separate causal models of hourly concentrations of CO and NOx explain their fluctuations accurately. They take account of the complex effects of the urban street canyon and winds in the city. The angle of incidence of the wind has significant impact on pollution level; a wind flow from the south-west increases pollution and wind from the north-east decreases it. The models have been shown to be equivalent to engineering and scientific models in estimating emission rate in the context of street canyons. However the study models are much more precise in the Perth context. ... The models are used to calculate the marginal effects for all attributes and elasticity for fuel price. In almost all attributes the non-work group is more responsive than the work group. Finally, the SP model results are integrated into an econometric model for the purpose of prediction. The travel behaviour prediction is used to estimate the policy impact on air quality. The benefit from the air quality improvement is reported in terms of life saved. The estimated relationships between probability of death and air pollution determines the number of lives that could be saved under various policy scenarios. A ratio of benefits to the financial and perceived sacrifices by drivers is calculated to compare the effectiveness of the suggested policies. A car size charge policy was found to be the most cost effective measure to ameliorate the environmental impact of cars in Perth, with a morning peak entry time charge being almost as cost effective. The study demonstrates the need for appropriate modelling of air pollution and travel behaviour. It brings together analytical methods at three levels of causality, vehicle to air pollution, charge to travel response, and air pollution to health.
