Abstract:
AbstractMichelle Alexander argues that carceral inequality and mass incarceration together have created a “new racial caste system” in America (2010, p. 11). She contends that only a race-conscioussocial movement that engages both legal actors and the public can dismantle this system of racial control. Unfortunately, very little research has examined views about carceral inequality. Little is known about the attitudes of juvenile and criminal justice workers. We build on and integrate three literatures—scholarship on the framing perspective, comparative conflict theory, and group position theory and racial ideology—to develop a theoretical model of attitudes toward carceral inequality. We hypothesize that race influences the resonance of attributional frames, especially criminal injustice frames, but endorsement of these frames represents the primary factor shaping judgments about whether carceral inequality is a social problem (propriety, urgency, severity and policy frames). For several decades, framing efforts have been underway aimed at mobilizing JCJW to reduce racial disparities in the juvenile justice system. And most offenders first have contact with the state as juveniles. Accordingly, to test our theory, we analyze data on views about carceral inequality in the juvenile justice system—or disproportionate minority contact—among a nationwide sample of justice workers (N = 543). The findings show that race is strongly associated with attributional frames about carceral inequality, and is indirectly related, through attributional frames, to endorsement of propriety, urgency, severity, and policy frames about carceral inequality.

Abstract:

Abstract:
2015 - 2016
The aim of this PhD work is to provide indications on comfort in the case of the Man-Machine interface and to guarantee all the tools for evaluating them. In order to analyze comfort, it was necessary to carry out a bibliographic survey on ergonomics and subsequently on comfort, identifying the shortcomings and all the aspects not considered. After these studies, a model of comfort perception was created that summarizes the concept that comfort and discomfort are the measure of the degree of appreciation linked to expectations and to the interaction between the person and the environment. Since comfort and discomfort related to the sitting are widely studied in the automotive field, the model of comfort perception has been applied to this case, identifying all the elements of the model that participate in the comfort / discomfort experiences. The expectation factor was also analyzed, in order to understand the mechanism of the influence of the expectation on general comfort; to prove it, an experimental test was carried out using the "placebo" effect. In the final phase of the discussion, attention was focused on two aspects that influence comfort in the Man-Object interaction, that is, the temperature and the pressure distribution at the interface. For both factors (temperature and pressure) we started from a deep bibliographic research in order to identify the most significant variables, extrapolated from pressure distributions and the temperature of the skin to the body-object interface, which must be considered when wants to evaluate how pressure and temperature at the interface affect perceived comfort. Subsequently, through case studies it was possible to verify all the significant correlations that these variables have with the level of perceived comfort by the subjects who participated in the tests. BERNI, VERONICA. “C. Beccaria” di Milano." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/375878.

Abstract:
From a pedagogical perspective, the research investigates the educational dispositive within the theatre laboratory of the Juvenile Penal Institute 'C. Beccaria' in Milan. Through an ethnographic research methodology (Bove, 2009) framed in the research strategy of the intrinsic case study (Stake, 1994), the participant observation phase took place from November 2019 to February 2020. The theoretical framework that made it possible to analyze the research data is Riccardo Massa's pedagogical theory, which identifies the methodological, pragmatic and structural dimensions of the educational dispositive as the object of pedagogical research (Massa, 1986, 1987). This theoretical framework has guided field observation and has been used for the analysis of the data, which have been read and systematized through this theory. The analysis traced the educational dispositive within the theatre laboratory and qualified the structure of the experience as a community and transitional dispositive that works like a game. The research has therefore opened to a final interpretation of the theatre experience in prison in the light of the theories on playing (Fink, 2008; Huizinga, 1946; Winnicott, 1971) and of the theoretical constructs of "heterotopic space" (Foucault, 2002), and "liminoid phenomenon" (Turner, 1986). In the light of these theories, theatre in prison has been interpreted as a transformative and educational experience by virtue of its fictional, liminal and transitional dimension: a potential area (Mottana, 1993) that establish, within a total institution like the prison, a generative discontinuity and an intermediate and mediative zone, of threshold, contact and symbolic and material passage between outside and inside, between reality and possibility. The case study has been framed by an analysis of national and international literature on the state of the art of the phenomenon of theatre in prison and placed among the studies that, within this panorama, interpret it from a peculiar pedagogical perspective.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is now the site of the largest mass repression of an ethnic and/or religious minority in the world today. Researchers estimate that since 2016 over one million people (mostly ethnic Uyghurs) have been detained without trial in the XUAR in a system of “re-education” camps. Outside of the camps, the region’s Turkic Muslim population are subjected to a dense network of hi-tech surveillance systems, checkpoints, and interpersonal monitoring which severely limit all forms of personal freedom penetrating society to the granular level. This chapter argues that the erection of this “carceral state” has been propelled by a “preventative” counterterrorism that has incorporated key practices (e.g. greater reliance on new surveillance technologies) and discourses (e.g. Islamaphobia) of the “global war on terrorism” with the ideology of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in pursuit of the negation of the very possibility of “terrorism”. As such the contemporary situation in the XUAR represents not only the mass repression of an ethnic and religious minority by an authoritarian regime but also an example of the dystopian potentialities of ostensibly “neutral” technologies.

Abstract:
The fear of violence in schools has compelled school systems to use a variety of authoritarian methods to control students' behavior. This work seeks to understand why these methods of behavioral control are used in some schools but not in others. Using the school survey on crime and safety, the authors explore the extent that the behavioral control strategies at diverse schools are more reminiscent of correctional facilities than institutions of learning. This analysis offers a nuanced view of the carceral elements in schools, where student body diversity is linked to some aspects of the carceral state but not others. Previous research suggests that strategies that seek to nurture the minds of young people are giving way to practices that criminalize school discipline, with the latter more likely to be instituted in poor, majority-minority schools. The present analysis finds that other factors, which are non-diversity related, are associated with authoritarian forms of control in schools, and suggests that all students, not just Black and Latino kids, are experiencing carceral elements.

Abstract:
Local enforcement of federal immigration policy is a new frontier for the use of extensive surveillance and monitoring, key tools of the criminal justice system. These tactics are deployed to target undocumented immigrants with a criminal background, but they impact a much wider set of individuals. Chapter 2 thus demonstrates the widespread impacts of punitive immigration policy on non-criminal, non-immigrant Latinos. Two datasets inform the quantitative analysis. The first is the 2015 Latino National Health and Immigration Survey (LNHIS 2015), and the second is the Pew Hispanic Center 2008 National Survey of Latinos (NSL 2008). Turning the focus to Latinos uncovers the efficiency with which criminal justice policy can be deployed against the nation’s largest minority group, demonstrates the power of familial ties to mobilize, and highlights that the racially targeted nature of the carceral state itself creates a collective fund for political action.
