Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of defining the control law for human respiration. Seven different drivers have been identified as possibly having an input to the respiratory controller. These seven represent a combination of feedforward and feedback inputs arising from neural and humoral mechanisms. Using the assumption that carbon dioxide concentrations in the arterial blood have the strongest effect, a control equation with proportional and derivative components based on this driver was evaluated. The methodology for the evaluation was to create a model of the respiratory system incorporating the P/D controller, obtain experimental data of one test subject's respiratory response to exercise, then compare model generated output with experimental data, and adjust the parameters in the control equation to yield optimal model performance. The usual practice of testing controller performance has been to apply single step loads to a model and evaluate its response. A multi-step protocol was used here to provide a better, more generalized test of controller performance. This thesis may represent the first documented use of an approach of this type for evaluating respiratory controller performance. Application of a multi-step protocol revealed a non-linear controller was needed to keep pace with system changes. Respiratory system operation was effectively managed using a controller of the form: VENTILATION = F(dCO2/dT,Q) + F(CO2,Q) + CONSTANT.

Abstract: The recently climate changes of the planet are promoving alteration in the incident and development in the plants diseases. The main gas that cause this event is the carbon dioxide, CO2. Based in this fact, it was developed by Embrapa environmental, the experiment that works with futures scenarios, looking the quality of CO2 present in the atmosphere. First of all it was made a statistic analyses of datas, verifing the leaf area that was damned, the hights of the primary soybeans plants, the nodulation and the dry weight. With the results that was gotten in this analyses, we could notice that it had a significant difference in the size of the leafs area damned when it was expose in differents levels of CO2. Starting from this datas, it was elaborated a deterministical mathematic model for crop the growing leaf area damned, caused by mildew, coupled in the growing rate of the damned area the influence of the CO2 quantity. Some simulation it were done using the growing quantity of CO2 in the atmosphere. With the presents datas of the years, we observe that in all cases, that hight level of CO2 cause the reduction of the damned leafs area. Even thought exists a reduction in this area, the quantity of pathogen grows exponentially in the times. What make us conclude, that in futures scenarios, will have a big spread in the soybean disease, caused py mildew

Abstract:
This study has provided a landscape level estimate of leaf area index (LAI) and net primary productivity (NPP) for a temperate broadleaf forest ecosystem in south-central Indiana. The estimates were compared with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) biophysical products LAI and NPP from both spatial and temporal perspectives. The evidence suggests that field-based estimates were poorly correlated with global MODIS data due to the simplifying assumptions of the MODIS global applicability, saturation problems of the red reflectance in highly vegetated areas, homogeneous land cover types of the study area, and other design assumptions of the field-based estimates. To improve the localized applicability of MODIS product algorithms, an empirical and localized algorithm combining in-situ measurements, the buildup of a localized biophysical model, and remote sensing-derived data were suggested for each local-scaled ecosystem.

Abstract:
Emissions inventories are an important tool, often built by governments, and used to manage emissions. To build an inventory of urban CO2 emissions and other fossil fuel combustion products in the urban atmosphere, an inventory of on-road traffic is required. In particular, a high resolution inventory is necessary to capture the local characteristics of transport emissions. These emissions vary widely due to the local nature of the fleet, fuel, and roads. Here we show a new model of ADT for the Portland, OR metropolitan region. The backbone is traffic counter recordings made by the Portland Bureau of Transportation at 7,767 sites over 21 years (1986-2006), augmented with PORTAL (The Portland Regional Transportation Archive Listing) freeway traffic count data. We constructed a regression model to fill in traffic network gaps using GIS data such as road class and population density. An EPA-supplied emissions factor was used to estimate transportation CO2 emissions, which is compared to several other estimates for the city's CO2 footprint.

Abstract:
Virtually the entire scientific, political, business, and social community is aware of the importance of climate change. Countries adhering to the Kyoto Protocol have taken up the challenge of reducing carbon emission, implementing national policies that include the introduction of carbon emissions trading programs, voluntary programs, taxes on carbon emissions and energy efficiency standards. In this context, the business world must be able to generate a carbon reduction strategy to ensure long-term success, considering also that customers (and investors) are ever more interested in the well-being of the environment, and increasingly demand their suppliers to be eco-friendly. This thesis has addressed the problem of designing (or redesigning) the supply chain to reduce carbon emission in an economically viable and, as far as possible, optimal way. The thesis addresses the problem by designing a complete and formalized methodology, which also includes a mathematical model to determine the best decisions to take. The research begins, as usual, with a review of the basic terminology, standards and the scientific literature related to the topic. From the review of the literature, it has been concluded that, although there are authors who propose models related to the design of the supply chain including carbon reduction, there is a lack of formalized methodologies that can be applied to real cases . The methodology consists of 4 stages: 1) The creation of a corporate carbon strategy; 2) The alignment with strategic financial planning; 3) The development of a mathematical model; and 4) The implementation and tracking. In the first stage a six-step guide is developed to create a corporate carbon strategy. The steps are: 1) Determine the type of emission; 2) Boundaries definition; 3) Planning and performance information; 4) ldentify carbon reduction opportunities; 5) Determine carbon reduction goals; 6) Participating in programs and carbon markets . In the second stage, the corporate carbon strategy is evaluated from a financial point of view and integrated into the strategic planning. In the third stage, a Mixed lnteger Linear Programming (MILP) model is proposed to obtain a plan for the supply chain redesign, so that: 1) the carbon reduction targets are achieved; 2) the strategic financial plan is taken into account; 3) all the real possibilities are contemplated to redesign the supply chain; and 4) a solution is achieved to optimize the economic results of the company. The carbon reduction methodology , including the mathematical model, has been applied to three case studies that are useful for adjusting sorne elements and for its validation . The first case study corresponds to a company that operates in the Home and Personal Care sector in Brazil, where the system of taxes is more complex than in other countries and illustrates how the mathematical model can be adapted to any context. The second case study deals with a multinational company which operates in the Foods sector in Spain and requires a redesign of the supply chain to improve its product cost. Finally, the third case used a company in the U.S. to show the effect of the scope definition on the carbon strategy. In the three cases, the solution of the mathematical model maximizes the net profit, whilst the carbon reduction target is achieved. Therefore, the carbon reduction methodology is useful for achieving economic and environmental benefits, as well as providing benefits related to the improvement of the corporate image, strengthening of brands and avoiding possible carbon taxes risks. In conclusion, the carbon reduction methodology proposed in this thesis, was developed to support companies that want to generate a competitive advantage and a sustainable development. In addition, it was designed to be flexible enough to adapt to the needs of each business and facilitate its execution in the business world.

Abstract:
Recent studies of the environmental Kuznets curve raise questions regarding the relationship between environmental indicators and GDP and the fundamental reasons that explain this relationship. In response, this thesis presents one-sector and two-sector models to analyze the alternative causal relationships between an environmental indicator and GDP at different stages of economic development. These models analyze how economic scale, technology, preferences, and economic structure influence the causality and shape of the relationship. These theoretical studies are followed by two empirical studies. The first tests the causal relationship between CO2 emissions and GDP in Canadian manufacturing industries. The second explores several factors as the fundamental causes that influence the CO2 emissions in the same industries. Factors, such as economic scale, preferences, technological progress, structural change, and energy input, are found to be crucial in the determination of CO2 emissions. The empirical results are positive, but there are data limitations. The empirical studies can be re-evaluated as more data becomes available.

McLellan, Bradley John. "Development of an Intraruminal Controlled-Release Device." The University of Waikato, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2527.

Abstract:
Slow-release devices retained in the rumen, are a simple method for continuous administration of bioactives to ruminant animals. To satisfy regulatory requirements and avoid waste of bioactive due to under- or over-dosing, it is advantageous to have a constant and predictable release rate. Existing intraruminal controlled-release technologies cannot easily be adapted for different bioactives or rates of release and can be influenced by the variable physiological environment in the rumen. Some existing commercial products use the pressure generated by a hydrogen gas-producing cell to extrude fluids from a syringe-like device. This technology may provide advantages for ruminal controlled-release as the gas production rate is unaffected by environment in the rumen and can be easily adjusted using electrical resistance applied to the gas cell. This technology was adapted for use in the rumen in these studies. Initial experiments identified the need for greater understanding of the rate that hydrogen is produced by the gas cell and the rate that gas diffuses through the barrel walls. Gas production rate was found to be inversely proportional to the resistance applied to the gas-producing cell. Factors affecting gas diffusion rate from the device were studied and a polymer was identified that reduced hydrogen diffusion to 5% of that for the initial components used. A relationship was developed to predict the release profile of a device. Controlled-release devices were constructed from selected materials. They released blank formulation at in vitro at a constant rate, which was within experimental variation of predicted values. Release rates from the devices used in vivo were slightly higher than predicted. The presence of rumen gases inside in vivo devices suggested that the difference may be due to inward diffusion of these gases; these may be eliminated by further study of barrel materials. Recommendations on the redesign of this technology for use as a generic intraruminal delivery system are given.

Abstract:
Growth responses to climatic variables of red pine (Pinus resinosa Aiton) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) were studied at the Morgan Arboretum, near Montreal, in southern Quebec, Canada (45$ sp circ$ 25$ sp prime$ N, 73$ sp circ$ 57$ sp prime$ W; 15.2 m above sea level). The relationships between climatic variables and basal area growth were examined using linear and quadratic models. Current and previous year's climatic variables were tested separately and in combination using multiple regression models. The best models explained 82% and 85% of the total variance of the growth of Norway spruce and red pine, respectively. The growth of both species was more associated with evapotranspiration than precipitation. The growth of Norway spruce was best explained by the current year's annual evapotranspiration (43%), while the growth of red pine was more related to previous year's August evapotranspiration (33%) at our site.
The JABOWA model was used to predict tree growth in hypothetical climates which could result from global climate changes. Based on literature, five treatments were applied: normal, and increases of 1, 3, 5, and 10$ sp circ$C. Comparison between the last (1983-1992) and next (1993-2002) ten years growth showed no significant differences between species when temperature was normal or increased by 1 and 3$ sp circ$C, but significant differences between species were observed when the temperature was increased by 5$ sp circ$C. Both species declined when the temperature was increased by 10$ sp circ$C. We concluded that Norway spruce is more sensitive to increases in atmospheric temperatures than red pine at our site.

Mitchell, Mark J. "Mathematical modelling of carbon dioxide dissolution and reaction processes." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2012. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14502/.

Abstract:
Carbon dioxide dissolution into water is a ubiquitous chemical process on earth, and having a full understanding of this process is becoming ever more important as we seek to understand the consequences of 250 years of exponentially-increasing anthropogenic C02 emissions to the atmosphere since the start of the Industrial Revolution. We examine the dissolution of C02 into water in a number of contexts. First, we analyse what happens to a range of chemical species dissolved in water following an injection of additional C02. We consider the well-mixed problem, and use the method of matched asymptotic expansions to obtain new expressions for the changes in the species' concentrations with time, the new final chemical equilibrium, and the time scales over which this equilibrium is reached, as functions of time, the parameters and the initial condition. These results can be used to help predict the changes in the pH and concentrations of dissolved carbonic species that will occur in the oceans as a result of anthropogenic C02 emissions, and in saline aquifer formations after pumping C02 deep underground. Second, we consider what happens deep underground in a saline aquifer when C02 has been pumped in, spreads through the pore space, and dissolves into the resident water, when advection, diffusion, and chemical reaction have varying levels of relative importance. We examine the length scales over which the dissolved C02 will spread out through an individual pore, ahead of a spreading drop of C02, and the concentrations of the different chemical species within the pore, in the steady-state case. Finally, some experiments have been carried out to investigate the effect of an injection of gaseous C02 on the chemical composition and pH of a saturated limestone aquifer formation. As the C02 enters the soil, it dissolves into the water, and we model the changes in the chemical composition of the water/limestone mixture with time.

Grote, Matthew John. "Enhancing urban road traffic carbon dioxide emissions models." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/412711/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this project was to provide a more accurate representation of road traffic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in urban areas, whilst remaining within limited Local Government Authority (LGA) resources. Tailpipe emissions from vehicles on urban roads have damaging impacts, with the problem exacerbated by the common occurrence of congestion. The scope of the project was CO2 because it is by far the largest constituent (99%) of road traffic greenhouse gas emissions. LGAs are typically responsible for facilitating mitigation of these emissions and must engage in emissions modelling to quantify the impact of transport interventions. A review of relevant literature identified a research gap, which constituted an investigation into whether a Traffic Variable Emissions Model (EM) (i.e. based on input data aggregated at traffic level rather than disaggregated at vehicle level) represented optimal complexity for LGAs, improving on the ability of wellestablished Average Speed EMs to capture the influence on emissions of congestion, whilst remaining within resource constraints. British LGAs (n=34) were surveyed to discover general attitudes to emissions modelling. Results showed that resource scarcity is important, with particular importance attached to EM reusability and convenient input data sources. Data sources rated highly for convenience were Urban Traffic Control (UTC) systems and Road Traffic Models (RTMs). A new Traffic Variable EM was developed termed the Practical EM for Local Authorities (PEMLA). Using Southampton as a testbed, 514 real-world GPS driving patterns (1Hz speed-time profiles) were collected from 49 drivers of different vehicle types and used as inputs to a detailed, instantaneous EM to calculate accurate vehicle CO2 emissions (assumed to represent 'real-world' emissions). Concurrent data were collected from Inductive Loop Detectors (ILDs installed as part of UTC systems) crossed by vehicles during their journeys and used to calculate values for selected traffic variables. Relationships between traffic variables (predictor variables) and accurate emissions (outcome variable) were examined using statistical analysis. Results showed that PEMLA outperformed the well-established, next-best alternative EM available to LGAs (an Average Speed EM), with mean predictions of PEMLA found to be 2% greater than observed values, whilst mean predictions of the alternative EM were 12% less. PEMLA's contribution is two-fold. Firstly, it is closer to optimal complexity than the well-established Average Speed EM alternative. This was for two reasons: (1) PEMLA was more accurate through using as inputs other traffic variable congestion indicators (in addition to traffic average speed), which improved its ability to capture the influence of congestion on emissions; and (2) PEMLA consumes similar (or potentially lower) resources to operate because inputs are generated from ILD data, which are a by-product of UTC systems or can be readily simulated in RTMs. Secondly, it possesses attributes that addressed the identified limitations of other Traffic Variable EM alternatives. These two contributions make PEMLA a suitable option to be recommended for LGA use.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 163-183.
A generic, size-based simulation model is developed to investigate the dynamics of carbon and nitrogen flows in plankton communities. All parameters in the model are determined by body size using empirically-determined relationships calculated from published data. The model is robust with respect to most parameters and assumptions. Because the model is based on general ecological principles, it can be used to simulate microplankton community interactions in any planktonic ecosystem. Two coastal ecosystems from the southern Benguela region in South Africa are simulated; one typical of the relatively stable surface waters on the Agulhas Bank and one typical of upwelling plumes, usually found off the west coast of South Africa. Simulated communities compare well with field observations in terms of standing stocks and size composition, and simulation results indicate that the small-scale structure of the two ecosystems and the processes occurring within them are relatively well understood. Consequently, the dynamic functioning of the two systems is investigated at the ecosystem level, using the simulation results. Hypothetical carbon flow networks are constructed, and the average importance of different flow pathways at different times is assessed. In both ecosystems, the vast majority of carbon flows pass through short, efficient-transfer pathways, although longer pathways are potentially possible. Simulation analyses are extended from coastal to oceanic food webs, and the model results are consistent with the hypothesis that oceanic phytoplankton have rapid rates of primary production. At-sea sampling of a phytoplankton bloom is mimicked by "sampling" from simulation output, and interpretation of the data using standard techniques is compared with the model output. The dangers of extrapolating from snapshot measurements is highlighted, and the experiment emphasizes the importance of size-fractionated sampling of phytoplankton. A hypothetical pelagic food web is described, consisting of at least five different trophic pathways from phytoplankton to pelagic fish. It is suggested that coastal waters probably have all the different pathways, and the relative importance and efficiency of the different pathways will determine the total fish production in an ecosystem.

Abstract:
The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is one of the world\'s biodiversity hotspots and probably one of the most highly threatened tropical forests. Understanding the forest, the carbon sequestration and develop a valid representation of the longterm dynamics of natural tropical forest are essential. Building a local forest growth model including anthropogenic activities will lead us to a better understanding in order to take sustainable actions. In the first part of the thesis a model of the floristic and ecological interaction in plant communities in the Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, state of São Paulo, Brazil is built. The model is a multi-species model which contains nine functionally different species, each depicting a component of the canopy layer that it can reach and a shade tolerance. In a second part, the thesis explores the impact of different patterns of non forest areas due to human colonization on the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The long-term structure, the dynamics and the carbon sequestration of the forest is then analyzed. The results suggest that an offshore inland colonization minimizes ecological impact on the forest composition and on the quantity of carbon stored in the forest biomass. Finally this project aims to understand the forest regeneration under different scenarios. The thesis determines how long it takes for the forest to recover after a clear out, and what are the impacts of external seed input playing during the regeneration of the forest. The proposed model gives satisfactory results and can be use as a decision support tool in order to take sustainable actions.

Abstract:
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is recognised as one of a suite of solutions required to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere and prevent catastrophic global climate change. In CCS schemes, CO2 is captured from large scale industrial emitters and transported, predominantly by pipeline, to geological sites, such as depleted oil or gas fields or saline aquifers, where it is injected into the rock formation for storage. The requirement to develop a robust Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) methodology for high pressure CO2 pipelines has been recognised as critical to the implementation of CCS. Consequently, failure frequency and consequence models are required that are appropriate for high pressure CO2 pipelines. This thesis addresses key components from both the failure frequency and consequence parts of the QRA methodology development. On the failure frequency side, a predictive model to estimate the failure frequency of a high pressure CO2 pipeline due to third party external interference has been developed. The model has been validated for the design requirements of high pressure CO2 pipelines by showing that it is applicable to thick wall linepipe. Additional validation has been provided through comparison between model predictions, historical data and the existing industry standard failure frequency model, FFREQ. On the consequences side, models have been developed to describe the impact of CO2 on people sheltering inside buildings and those attempting to escape on foot, during a pipeline release event. The models have been coupled to the results of a dispersion analysis from a pipeline release under different environmental conditions to demonstrate how the consequence data required for input into the QRA can be determined. In each model both constant and changing external concentrations of CO2 have been considered and the toxic effects on people predicted. It has been shown that the models can be used to calculate safe distances in the event of a CO2 pipeline release.

Abstract:
Related to the technology of CO2 capture, transport, and storage (CCS), an accurate transport model which predicts the behaviour of carbon-dioxide mixtures during steady-state and transient situations, is needed. A correct estimation of the frictional pressure-drop is an important part of such a model.A homogenous friction-model, the Friedel model, and the Cheng et al. model have been compared with six steady-state experiments using pure CO2. The experiments were nearly adiabatic and within the following range: mass velocities from 1058 to 1663 kg/m2s, saturated temperatures from 3.8 to 17 C (reduced pressures from 0.52 to 0.72), vapor fractions from 0.099 to 0.742, and pipe diameter of 10 mm.The Friedel model was found to be the most accurate model with a standard deviation of 9.7 % versus 55.74 % for the Cheng et al. model and 29.18 % for the homogenous model. The selected friction models were implemented into a numerical model for pipe flow of multiphase CO2, and one of the mentioned experiments was reproduced. The result illustrates how the accuracy of the friction model is even more important when used as a part of the complete transport-model. This is mainly because the friction model and other sub-models, such as the equation of state, are coupled. During the implementation of the Cheng et al. model, certain errors in the original paper were found and corrected. In the case of a transient flow, the influence of the friction model and the associated slip relation, were explored. It was shown that wave speeds strongly depends on the slip relation used. The friction model itself will indirectly affect the wave speed. This is mainly because of the reducedfluid velocity arising when the driving force across the wave is reduced. However, the main effect of the friction model is the pressure gradient arising in regions where the velocity is non-zero.

Abstract:
The National Aeronautics and Space Agency NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) platform carried by Terra and Aqua satellites, is providing systematic measurements summarized in high quality, consistent and well-calibrated satellite images and datasets ranging from reflectance in the visible and near infrared bands to estimates of leaf area index, vegetation indices and biome productivity. The objective of this research was to relate the spectral responses and derived MODIS products of ecosystems, to biogeochemical processes and trends in their physiological variables. When different sources of data were compared, discrepancies between the MODIS variables and the corresponding ground measurements were evident. Uncertainties in the input variables of MODIS products algorithms, effects of cloud cover at the studied pixel, estimation algorithm, and local variation in land cover type are considered as the cause. A simple "continuous field" model based on a physiologically-driven spectral index using two ocean-color bands of MODIS satellite sensor showed great potential to track seasonally changing photosynthetic light use efficiency and stress-induced reduction in net primary productivity of terrestrial vegetation. The model explained 88% of the variability in Flux tower-based daily Net Primary Productivity. Also a high correlation between midday gross CO2 exchange with both daily and 8-day mean gross CO2 exchange, consistent across all the studied vegetation types, was found. Although it may not be possible to estimate 8-day mean Light Use Efficiency reliably from satellite data, Light Use Efficiency models may still be useful for estimation of midday values of gross CO2 exchange which could then be related to longer term means of CO2 exchange. In addition, the MODIS enhanced vegetation index shows a high potential for estimation of ecosystem gross primary production, using respiration values from MODIS surface temperature, providing truly per-pixel estimates.

Abstract:
In order to achieve a more accurate input value for groundwater age determining models, δ13CVPDB values for soil gas were evaluated at 50 cm depths in locations throughout Utah in order to define correlations between δ13C and environmental parameters. 16 sites were chosen that exploited large changes in elevation and latitude which provided variations in climate, precipitation, plant community, etc. Gas samples were collected over 1-1½ years, and soil samples were collected at depth during installations. Field and laboratory studies were also used to evaluate CO2 and δ13C change with depth. It was discovered that in mountainous recharge areas, the mean δ13C value was −21.8 ± 2.8‰ (2σ). Use of this value reduced the uncertainty in groundwater age models by close to half relative to the current assumed range of -13‰ to -28‰. One arid and one semi-arid site were located at Pilot Valley (mean -11.0‰ ± 2.0, 2σ) and the mouth of Cedar Canyon (mean -17.5‰ ± 0.8, 2σ). The high values at these locations may be due to low root respiration and low microbial activity rates caused by high temperatures, low precipitation, and low vegetation density. Correlations among environmental parameters and δ13C values were discovered with ANOVA, but the differences were small enough that for practical purposes they are insignificant.

Abstract:
The transport sector is a major cause of emissions both in Sweden and globally. This master thesis aims to develop a model for estimating emissions from heavy transport on a specific route. The emissions can be used in a route planning software and help the driver choose a route that contributes to reduced emissions. The methodology was to investigate attributes, like vehicle-related attributes and topography, and their impact on transport emissions. The carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide emissions were converted into carbon dioxide equivalents, which were incorporated as one cost together with a precalculated driving time as a second cost in a multi objective function used for route planning. Different tests were conducted to investigate the accuracy and the usability of the model. First, a validation test was performed, where the optimized routes were analyzed. The test showed that the model was more likely to choose a shorter route in general. The fuel consumption values largely met expectations towards generic values and measurements, that were gathered from research. A second test of the model made use of the driving time combined with the emissions in a multi objective function. In this test, a weighting coefficient was varied and analyzed to understand the possibility to find a value of the coefficient for the best trade-off. The result showed that the model generates different solutions for different coefficients and that it is possible to find a suitable trade-off between the driving time and emissions. Therefore, this study shows that there is a possibility to combine emission with other objectives such as driving time for route optimization. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was performed, where attribute factors and assumptions were varied to see how sensitive they were and, in turn, how much a change would impact the calculated emissions. The result from the sensitivity analysis showed that the changes in topography-attributes had less impact than changes on vehicle-related attributes. In conclusion, this thesis has built a foundation for route planning, based on the environmental aspect, for heavy transports.

Abstract:
Our study examines some design alternatives for a carbon market by exploring the fledgling Alberta carbon market. We attempt to evaluate the performance of these designs on the bases of trade volume, cost efficiency and stability. To achieve this we construct an empirically-calibrated but simple agent-based model, certain aspects of which we selectively modify to incorporate various design options. We make comparisons among these options based on data simulated from the ensuing family of models. We find strong evidence that in general, market design features such as source-of-credits, the scale of the market, and pricing-mechanism are very important considerations that influence the performance of the market. In addition, we find support for the notion that the level of the price cap relative to the average cost of abatement in the market matters, and beyond a threshold, higher price caps are associated with lower levels of performance.

Abstract:
Statistical analysis and modeling are useful for understanding the behavior of different phenomena. In this study we will focus on two areas of applications: Global warming and cancer research. Global Warming is one of the major environmental challenge people face nowadays and cancer is one of the major health problem that people need to solve. For Global Warming, we are interest to do research on two major contributable variables: Carbon dioxide (CO2) and atmosphere temperature. We will model carbon dioxide in the atmosphere data with a system of differential equations. We will develop a differential equation for each of six attributable variables that constitute CO2 in the atmosphere and a differential system of CO2 in the atmosphere. We are using real historical data on the subject phenomenon to develop the analytical form of the equations. We will evaluate the quality of the developed model by utilizing a retrofitting process. Having such an analytical system, we can obtain good estimates of the rate of change of CO2 in the atmosphere, individually and cumulatively as a function of time for near and far target times. Such information is quite useful in strategic planning of the subject matter. We will develop a statistical model taking into consideration all the attributable variables that have been identified and their corresponding response of the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere in the continental United States. The development of the statistical model that includes interactions and higher order entities, in addition to individual contributions to CO2 in the atmosphere, are included in the present study. The proposed model has been statistically evaluated and produces accurate predictions for a given set of the attributable variables. Furthermore, we rank the attributable variables with respect to their significant contribution to CO2 in the atmosphere. For Cancer Research, the object of the study is to probabilistically evaluate commonly used methods to perform survival analysis of medical patients. Our study includes evaluation of parametric, semi-parametric and nonparametric analysis of probability survival models. We will evaluate the popular Kaplan-Meier (KM), the Cox Proportional Hazard (Cox PH), and Kernel density (KD) models using both Monte Carlo simulation and using actual breast cancer data. The first part of the evaluation will be based on how these methods measure up to parametric analysis and the second part using actual cancer data. As expected, the parametric survival analysis when applicable gives the best results followed by the not commonly used nonparametric Kernel density approach for both evaluations using simulation and actual cancer data. We will develop a statistical model for breast cancer tumor size prediction for United States patients based on real uncensored data. When we simulate breast cancer tumor size, most of time these tumor sizes are randomly generated. We want to construct a statistical model to generate these tumor sizes as close as possible to the real patients' data given other related information. We accomplish the objective by developing a high quality statistical model that identifies the significant attributable variables and interactions. We rank these contributing entities according to their percentage contribution to breast cancer tumor growth. This proposed statistical model can also be used to conduct surface response analysis to identify the necessary restrictions on the significant attributable variables and their interactions to minimize the size of the breast tumor. We will utilize the Power Law process, also known as Non-homogenous Poisson Process and Weibull Process to evaluate the effectiveness of a given treatment for Stage I & II Ductal breast cancer patients. We utilize the shape parameter of the intensity function to evaluate the behavior of a given treatment with respect to its effectiveness. We will develop a differential equation that will characterize the behavior of the tumor as a function of time. Having such a differential equation, the solution of which once plotted will identify the rate of change of tumor size as a function of age. The structure of the differential equation consists of the significant attributable variables and their interactions to the growth of breast cancer tumor. Once we have developed the differential equations and its solution, we proceed to validate the quality of the proposed differential equations and its usefulness.

Abstract:
Life Cycle Assessments on buildings and various environmental certificates are starting to become customary for newbuilding projects in Sweden. Building materials play a big part in a building’s environmental impact. Earlier research indicates that Life Cycle Assessments is not a routine in today’s construction process and it may depend on uncertainties in the methods of quantifying carbon dioxide emissions. This master thesis focuses on how equivalent carbon dioxides, a standard unit to quantify greenhouse gas emissions, of building materials can be integrated with Building Information Modelling. Through meetings with experts in the field, data has been collected. A 3D model of a house was built in order to evaluate both an integration with a cost calculation tool and directly with the 3D model. The results showed how the cost calculation tool works for calculations of equivalent carbon dioxides, early in the pre-construction phase. Difficulties in finding corresponding materials in their database were found and issues with summarizing carbon dioxide data. The integration directly into the 3D model, with visual programming, proved an insert for each materials’ carbon dioxide emissions worked. This allows further updates throughout the building process. It was also possible to import material information to a carbon dioxide calculation tool. This evaluation opened up a possibility to change and update carbon dioxide emissions at an early design stage of a building process with Building Information Modelling along with a need of organizational change due to today's traditional building processes.

Abstract:
Both physical circulation and biogeochemical characteristics are unique in the Southern Ocean (SO) region, and are fundamentally different from those of the northern hemisphere. Moreover, according to previous research, the oceanic response to the trend of the Southern Annual Mode (SAM) has profound impacts on the future oceanic uptake of carbon dioxide in the SO. In other words, the climate and circulation of the SO are strongly coupled to the overlying atmospheric variability. However, while we have understanding on the SO physical circulation and have the ability to predict the future changes of the SO climate and physical processes, the link between the SO physical processes, the air-sea carbon flux, and correlated climate variability remains unknown. Even though scientists have been studying the spatial and temporal variability of the SO carbon flux and the associated biogeochemical processes, the spatial patterns and the magnitudes of the air-sea carbon flux do not agree between models and observations. Therefore, in this study, we utilized a modified version of a general circulation model (GCM) to performed realistic simulations of the SO carbon on seasonal to interannual timescales, and focused on the crucial physical and biogeochemical processes that control the carbon flux. The spatial pattern and the seasonal cycle of the air-sea carbon dioxide flux is calculated, and is broadly consistent with the climatological observations. The variability of air-sea carbon flux is mainly controlled by the gas exchange rate and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide, which is in turn controlled by the compensating changes in temperature and dissolved inorganic carbon. We investigated the seasonal variability of dissolved inorganic carbon based on different regional processes. Furthermore, we also investigated the dynamical adjustment of the surface carbon flux in response to the different gas exchange parameterizations, and conclude that parameterization has little impact on spatially integrated carbon flux. Our simulation well captured the SO carbon cycle variability on seasonal to interannual timescales, and we will improve our model by employ a better scheme of nutrient cycle, and consider more nutrients as well as ecological processes in our future study.

This study focuses on characterizing subsurface rock formations of the Wellington Field, in Sumner County, Kansas, for both geosequestration of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the saline Arbuckle formation, and enhanced oil recovery of a depleting Mississippian oil reservoir. Multi-scale data including rock core plug samples, laboratory ultrasonic P-&S-waves, X-ray diffraction, and well log data including sonic and dipole sonic, is integrated in an effort to evaluate existing rock physics models, with the objective of establishing a model that best represents our reservoir and/or saline aquifer rock formations. We estimated compressional and shear wave velocities of rock core plugs for a Mississippian reservoir and Arbuckle saline aquifer, based on first arrival times using a laboratory setup consisting of an Ult 100 Ultrasonic System, a 12-ton hydraulic jack, and a force gauge; the laboratory setup is located in the geophysics lab in Thompson Hall at Kansas State University. The dynamic elastic constants Young’s Modulus, Bulk Modulus, Shear (Rigidity) Modulus and Poisson’s Ratio have been calculated based on the estimated P- and S-wave velocity data. Ultrasonic velocities have been compared to velocities estimated based on sonic and dipole sonic log data from the Wellington 1-32 well. We were unable to create a transformation of compressional wave sonic velocities to shear wave sonic for all wells where compressional wave sonic is available, due to a lack of understandable patterns observed from a relatively limited dataset. Furthermore, saturated elastic moduli and velocities based on sonic and dipole sonic well logs, in addition to dry rock moduli acquired from core plug samples allowed for the testing of various rock physics models. These models predict effects of changing effective (brine + CO₂ +hydrocarbon) fluid composition on seismic properties, and were compared to known values to ensure accuracy, thus revealing implications for feasibility of seismic monitoring in the KGS 1-32 well vicinity.

Abstract:

The health impacts of urban air pollution are a growing concern in our rapidly urbanizing world. Urban air pollutants show high intra-urban spatial variability linked to urban land use and land cover (LULC). This correlation of air pollutants with LULC is widely recognized; LULC data is an integral input into a wide range of models, especially land use regression models developed by epidemiologists to study the impact of air pollution on human health. Given the demonstrated links between LULC and urban air pollution, and between urban air pollution and health, an interesting question arises: what is the potential of LULC modifications to mitigate the health impacts of urban air pollution?

In this dissertation we assess the potential of LULC modifications to mitigate the health impacts of NO2, a respiratory irritant and strong marker for combustion-related air pollution, in the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area in northwestern USA. We begin by measuring summer and winter NO2 in the area using a spatially dense network of passive NO 2 samplers. We next develop an annual average model for NO2 based on the observational data, using random forest—for the first time in the realm of urban air pollution—to disentangle the effects of highly correlated LULC variables on ambient NO2 concentrations. We apply this random forest (LURF) model to a 200m spatial grid covering the study area, and use this 200m LURF model to quantify the effect of different urban land use categories on ambient concentrations of NO2. Using the changes in ambient NO2 concentrations resulting from land use modifications as input to BenMAP (a health benefits assessment tool form the US EPA), we assess the NO2-related health impact associated with each land use category and its modifications. We demonstrate how the LURF model can be used to assess the respiratory health benefits of competing land use modifications, including city-wide and local-scale mitigation strategies based on modifying tree canopy and vehicle miles traveled (VMT).

Planting trees is a common land cover modification strategy undertaken by cities to reduce air pollution. Statistical models such as LUR and LURF demonstrate a correlation between tree cover and reduced air pollution, but they cannot demonstrate causation. Hence, we run the atmospheric chemistry and transport model CMAQ to examine to what extent the dry deposition mechanism can explain the reduction of NO2 which statistical models associate with tree canopy.

Results from our research indicate that even though the Portland-Vancouver area is in compliance with the US EPA NO2 standards, ambient concentrations of NO2 still create an annual health burden of at least $40 million USD. Our model suggests that NO2 associated with high intensity development and VMT may be creating an annual health burden of $7 million and $3.3 million USD respectively. Existing tree canopy, on the other hand, is associated with an annual health benefit of $1.4 million USD. LULC modifications can mitigate some fraction of this health burden. A 2% increase in tree canopy across the study area may reduce incidence rates of asthma exacerbation by as much as 7%. We also find that increasing tree canopy is a more effective strategy than reducing VMT in terms of mitigating the health burden of NO 2.

CMAQ indicates that the amount of NO2 removed by dry deposition is an order of magnitude smaller than that predicted by our statistical model. About one-third of the difference can be explained by the lower NO2 values predicted by CMAQ, and one-third may be attributable to parameterization of stomatal uptake.

Abstract:
This research simulates the response of the Quebec cropping sector to the introduction of carbon credit revenue which could be made available through the implementation of a greenhouse gas emissions trading and offset system in Canada. Eligible carbon sequestering practices investigated in the simulations include adoption of moderate tillage and no-till as well as the conversion to a permanent cover crop. Monetary demand for greenhouse gas emissions offsets from the cropping sector is endogenized in the objective function of the Canadian Regional Agriculture Model (CRAM) which has been modified to account for the simulations and for the disaggregation of the single crop region of Quebec into eleven sub-regions. Changes in the cropping sector induced by the introduction of seven different carbon price levels, ranging from $1/t CO2 to $100/t CO2, are compared to a baseline. Variables covered in the simulation results include: relative profitability of carbon sequestering crops/technology; adoption rates of moderate tillage and no-till; carbon sequestration levels; carbon credit revenue; cropping pattern, crop production and livestock.
Results indicate that carbon sequestration in agricultural soils could only contribute a minor share of the total emission reduction in Quebec, even with very high carbon price levels. At a carbon price of $15/t CO2, it is estimated that changes in tillage practices and permanent cover would result in an additional 12,328 t CO2 per year sequestered by the cropping sector in Quebec. However, some regions display higher adoption rates of carbon sequestering practices than other regions and appear to be more responsive to the price incentive. The introduction of a monetary demand for GHGE offsets from the cropping sector induces some changes in terms of cropping pattern and crop production level, while it has almost no impact on the livestock sector.

The continental shelf of Pernambuco is characterized by oligotrophy and thermal stability throughout the year, influenced by the North Brazil current that brings warm water, rich in CO2 to the continental shelf of northeastern Brazil. The Capibaribe and Jaboatão rivers are one of the major rivers of Pernambuco. They receive a large input of domestic effluents from Recife and its metropolitan area, which causes changes in the natural carbon cycle. Here we evaluated the pCO2 variability in these two estuaries and in the inner shelf area of Pernambuco. To evaluate the role of the estuaries, samples were collected bimonthly during low tide, on a seasonal cycle from November 2010 to September 2011. The Capibaribe estuary presented the highest values of total alkalinity (TA) and total inorganic carbon (TCO2), with a significant difference between the two rivers. Both estuaries showed seasonal variation in TCO2 and TA values. The annual TA averages were 1649 ± 390 μmol kg-1 in the Capibaribe and 1557 ± 315 μmol kg-1 at Barra de Jangadas. Regarding the pCO2, the estuaries were saturated in CO2 throughout the year, with average for the dry season of 3317 ± 2034 μatm in the Capibaribe and 6018 ± 4589 μatm in Barra de Jangadas. These values varied seasonally between estuaries, with a pCO2 decrease during the rainy season in the Capibaribe, and an increase of up to 300% in the Barra de Jangadas estuary. In order to obtain a better evaluation of the spatial distribution of pCO2 over the shelf waters, it was developed an equipment for the continuous and direct measurement of sea surface pCO2 as low-cost alternative to the commercially manufactured ones. The first cruise took place in December 2014, starting from the port of Recife towards the Barra de Jangadas estuary. Even though the dry period has shown the highest primary productivity, the region presented itself as oligotrophic, with peaks of chl-a (8.4 mg m3) under influence of the Capibaribe plume. Only a small area showed CO2 subsaturation to the atmosphere, with the minimum value of 376.6 μatm. In general, a high CO2 fugacity (fCO2) was identified in the entire area of the inner shelf, with average of 474.33 ± 66.57 μatm, resulting in an mean flux to the atmosphere of 8.5 ± 6.82 mmol C m-2 d-1. It was proposed a model to predict the fCO2 using salinity and temperature values for inner the shelf during the summer. A more comprehensive spatial and seasonal distribution of the carbonate parameters was conducted by using values of TA TCO2 in areas subjected and non-subjected to riverine inputs during 2013 and 2014. The area presents a relative stability to what concerns the pCO2 and pH distribution, with overall average values of 449 ± 45 μatm and 8.00 ± 0,03 respectively. In general, the parameters analyzed were influenced by the distance from the coast, resulting in the development of prediction models for TA, TCO2, pCO2, pH, ΩCa and ΩAr using temperature, salinity and longitude data. The area has a low vulnerability to ocean acidification process, the TA is high even in the areas under riverine influence, where the lowest average values was registered 2358 ± 28 μmol kg-1. The values of pCO2 and CO2 fluxes found on the continental shelf of Pernambuco are above those expected on global averages estimated by mathematical models for open continental shelf. The variability in pCO2 found is linked to the own characteristic of the South Atlantic tropical water, which covers the shallow Pernambuco platform with warm waters. The low solubility of CO2 due to high temperature, combined with oligotrophy and the transport of organic matter to be respired outside the estuaries, turns the continental shelf into a source of CO2 to the atmosphere throughout the year.

Abstract:
Even though titanium dioxide photocatalysis has been promoted as a leading green technology for water purification, many issues have hindered its application on a large commercial scale. For the materials scientist the main issues have centred the synthesis of more efficient materials and the investigation of degradation mechanisms; whereas for the engineers the main issues have been the development of appropriate models and the evaluation of intrinsic kinetics parameters that allow the scale up or re-design of efficient large-scale photocatalytic reactors. In order to obtain intrinsic kinetics parameters the reaction must be analysed and modelled considering the influence of the radiation field, pollutant concentrations and fluid dynamics. In this way, the obtained kinetic parameters are independent of the reactor size and configuration and can be subsequently used for scale-up purposes or for the development of entirely new reactor designs. This work investigates the intrinsic kinetics of phenol degradation over titania film due to the practicality of a fixed film configuration over a slurry. A flat plate reactor was designed in order to be able to control reaction parameters that include the UV irradiance, flow rates, pollutant concentration and temperature. Particular attention was paid to the investigation of the radiation field over the reactive surface and to the issue of mass transfer limited reactions. The ability of different emission models to describe the radiation field was investigated and compared to actinometric measurements. The RAD-LSI model was found to give the best predictions over the conditions tested. Mass transfer issues often limit fixed film reactors. The influence of this phenomenon was investigated with specifically planned sets of benzoic acid experiments and with the adoption of the stagnant film model. The phenol mass transfer coefficient in the system was calculated to be km,phenol=8.5815x10-7Re0.65(ms-1). The data obtained from a wide range of experimental conditions, together with an appropriate model of the system, has enabled determination of intrinsic kinetic parameters. The experiments were performed in four different irradiation levels (70.7, 57.9, 37.1 and 20.4 W m-2) and combined with three different initial phenol concentrations (20, 40 and 80 ppm) to give a wide range of final pollutant conversions (from 22% to 85%). The simple model adopted was able to fit the wide range of conditions with only four kinetic parameters; two reaction rate constants (one for phenol and one for the family of intermediates) and their corresponding adsorption constants. The intrinsic kinetic parameters values were defined as kph = 0.5226 mmol m-1 s-1 W-1, kI = 0.120 mmol m-1 s-1 W-1, Kph = 8.5 x 10-4 m3 mmol-1 and KI = 2.2 x 10-3 m3 mmol-1. The flat plate reactor allowed the investigation of the reaction under two different light configurations; liquid and substrate side illumination. The latter of particular interest for real world applications where light absorption due to turbidity and pollutants contained in the water stream to be treated could represent a significant issue. The two light configurations allowed the investigation of the effects of film thickness and the determination of the catalyst optimal thickness. The experimental investigation confirmed the predictions of a porous medium model developed to investigate the influence of diffusion, advection and photocatalytic phenomena inside the porous titania film, with the optimal thickness value individuated at 5 ìm. The model used the intrinsic kinetic parameters obtained from the flat plate reactor to predict the influence of thickness and transport phenomena on the final observed phenol conversion without using any correction factor; the excellent match between predictions and experimental results provided further proof of the quality of the parameters obtained with the proposed method.

Abstract:
The high cost of the activated carbon has motivated the search of low cost adsorbents such as industrial by-products. In this sense, the use of industrial by-products of oil shale: Oil Shale (XC), Pirolized Oil Shale (XR) and Pirolized Oil Shale with Tires (XRP), from PETROSIX/PETROBRAS, and the spent catalyst (CAT), from FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) unit were characterized and used in this work in the adsorption of organics compounds of industrial liquid effluent. The main contribution of this thesis is to propose a mathematical model to the adsorption process of organic compounds in oil shale, spent catalyst of FCC and powdered activated carbon. This model is based on HSDM (Homogeneous Surface Diffusion Model) model and on the hydraulic behavior of the adsorbent system. Other contribution is the structural and chemical characterization of several samples of oil shale (oil shale, Pirolized oil shale and Pirolized oil shale with Tires) and of the spent catalyst of FCC. A computational model to simulate the adsorption process of these materials is also developed and can be considered an additional contribution of this work. Experimental and simulated results allow characterization of the oil shale adsorbent as basically macroporous and with superficial area about 0.51 to 3.36 m2.g-1. In addition, they present the same crystal structures and clay micrografies characteristics. The adsorbent CAT is composed basically by Faujasite, silica and alumina. They present spherical beads, irregular forms and micropores, with superficial area characteristics of zeolitic materials (148 and 155 m2.g-1). The adsorption tests realized in the synthetic and industrial effluents (Phenolic and Petrochemical) showed the potential of application of the industrial by-products of oil shale and CAT in the removal of organics compounds (dyes, Phenol and COT) of these effluents. In respect of environmental standards to effluents disposal (CONAMA resolution 357), simulations results, obtained with the proposed model, has demonstrated that the use of only oil shale or CAT is not viable, because the high quantity of adsorbents required. However, such adsorbents can be used in the reduction of organic loads in both effluents, when combined with other processes. Each adsorbent showed be used where it is produced because of transportation cost. The CAT is indicated for the treatment of Petrochemical effluent while the others adsorbents may be applied in the phenolic effluent treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous spine cryosurgery (cryoablation) close to nerves and spinal cord has been performed in the clinical practice, however without experimental studies proving its safety and efficacy. The aim of this work was to develop an experimental swine model of in vivo cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) guided vertebral cryoablation. A preliminary morphometric study of the porcine spine by CBCT imaging was carried out. A specific cryoablation protocol was proposed to adapt the \"ice ball\" to the swine vertebrae dimensions. Subsequently, the protocol was tested in in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo models. METHODS: The institutional animal care committee approved this study. Sixteen anatomical parameters were measured in 36 lumbar swine vertebrae and compared to the same measurements of the CBCT and multidetector CT (MDCT). Three models of in vitro / ex vivo studies were developed for the positioning of thermocouples around the cryoprobe. Isotherms were obtained from measured temperatures for each minute during a 2-8 minutes double freezing-thawing protocol. Twenty -two CBCT-guided vertebral cryoablations were performed in eight pigs. Epidural thermocouples registered the temperatures while carbon dioxide (CO2) was injected in the epidural space to protect nerves. The clinical follow-up was carried out until six days before euthanasia. Clinical and radiologic data were correlated to the histopathology study with light microscopy (n=20) or electron transmission microscopy (n=2). RESULTS: CBCT was proven to be a comparable imaging method to MDCT with significant correlation (p < 0.05) in all variables, except in those including the cartilaginous tissue of the vertebral plateau. The registered isotherms were colder in the ex vivo model embedded in gel (-34 °C and -2 °C; -30 °C and 3 °C; -10 °C and 13 °C, respectively) than in the in vitro model (-23 °C and 3 °C; -7 °C and 10 °C; 1 °C and 16 °C) or the ex vivo model without gel (-30 °C and 28 °C). In the in vivo study the CBCT imaging was well succeeded to demonstrate the cryoprobes inserted in the vertebral body and the epidural CO2 in all procedures. The major complication rate was 4.5%. The distance between the cryoprobe and the spinal canal (Cp-Sc) was the most efficient parameter to categorize the vertebral canal temperatures below 19 °C in the logistic regression model analysis (p < 0.004). Perineural inflammatory infiltrate was not identified in the light microscopy analysis. One swine did not present neurological deficits, although the ultra-structural analysis has evidenced myelin sheath disruption in some large neural fibers. CONCLUSIONS: The CBCT imaging was validated as an imaging method for the swine vertebrae analysis. The ex vivo model embedded in gel featured better the cold preservation in the bone tissue. The combination of a specific freezing protocol associated with epidural protective measures allowed the feasibility of the CBCT-guided vertebral cryoablation in the swine model. The ultra-structural analysis showed early modifications of the nerve fibers

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Despite of the widespread use of the central venous oxygen saturation measurement as a therapeutic goal in critically ill patients, absolute differences between this measurement and the mixed venous oxygen exist. Causes of these differences, as well the behavior of these gradients in critical illness, are not completely understood. Considering current therapeutic interventions aimed to reverse tissue oxygenation impairment are mediated by increases in cardiac output; the particular scenario in which the heart is not physiologically able to further increase oxygen extraction and the absence of tools to monitoring the myocardium impact of those interventions, the present study, facing the theoretical possibility of the coronary sinus effluent participation in those central to mixed venous differences, has analyzed the oxygen saturation (SO2), carbon dioxide partial pressure (PCO2), lactate and glucose concentrations behaviors over time, in different models of tissue hypoxia and in different vascular sites. Emphasis on the myocardial energetic metabolism and its impact over central to mixed venous gradients was placed. METHODS: 37 pigs, males, weighting about 35 Kg, sedated and mechanically ventilated, were studied after induction of four different hypoxic injury models (sepsis, and anemic, stagnant, hypoxic hypoxia), eight for group and five controls. In addition to hemodynamic and oxygen variables, SO2, PCO2, lactate and glucose were measured in different phases, in 9 distinct vascular sites, including coronary sinus (femoral artery, inferior and superior vena cava, right atria, right ventricle, pulmonary artery, right suprahepatic vein and portal vein). MAIN RESULTS: Concentrations of O2, lactate and glucose in the coronary sinus effluent presented distinctive patterns among groups: shift from lactate to glucose consumption in hypoxic hypoxia and anemic hypoxia groups, increase in both glucose and lactate consumption in sepsis and absence of clear trend in stagnant hypoxia group. PCO2 gradients from systemic artery to coronary sinus presented late enlargement trend in all groups. In the regional gradients analysis comparisons, coronary sinus presented the lowest SO2, the lowest lactate concentrations, the highest PCO2 levels, and these patterns changed over time. Similar evolution trends were observed between central to mixed venous O2, PCO2, lactate and glucose gradients and the same parameters measured in coronary sinus. CONCLUSIONS: Different concentrations of O2, PCO2, lactate and glucose in coronary sinus are related to the type of hypoxic injury and not only to energetic substrate availability. Severity-related patterns, common to all groups in late phases, were identified: any reduction of coronary SO2, shift to glucose consumption, net lactate myocardial production and equality or inferiority of PCO2 levels related to other vascular compartments (independently of trend). Trends in transmyocardial PCO2 gradients followed cardiac output ones and, certainly, should mirror coronary blood flow. Regional gradients analysis showed suitable to explore specific regional metabolic settings, as in the described example of liver metabolism, in which production of glucose were maintained in all phases by this organ in hypoxic hypoxia groups, differently from the impaired production described in literature for sepsis. At last, data from sepsis group have showed: a) as to the previously known central to mixed venous SO2 and lactate gradients, PCO2 and glucose gradients also exist; b) coronary sinus has participated significantly in formation of central to mixed venous lactate, PCO2 and glucose gradients

Abstract:
The proven ability to ferment Saccharomyces cerevisiae on a large scale presents an attractive target for producing chemicals and fuels from sustainable sources. Efficient and predominant carbon flux through to ethanol is a significant engineering issue in the development of this yeast as a multi-product cell chassis used in biorefineries. In order to evaluate diversion of carbon flux away from ethanol, combinatorial deletions were investigated in genes encoding the six isozymes of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), which catalyse the terminal step in ethanol production. The scarless, dominant and counter- selectable amdSYM gene deletion method was optimised for generation of a combinatorial ADH knockout library in an industrially relevant strain of S. cerevisiae. Current understanding of the individual ADH genes fails to fully evaluate genotype-by-genotype and genotype-by-environment interactions: rather, further research of such a complex biological process requires a multivariate mathematical modelling approach. Application of such an approach using the Design of Experiments (DoE) methodology is appraised here as essential for detailed empirical evaluation of complex systems. DoE provided empirical evidence that in S. cerevisiae: i) the ADH2 gene is not associated with producing ethanol under anaerobic culture conditions in combination with 25 g l-1 glucose substrate concentrations; ii) ADH4 is associated with increased ethanol production when the cell is confronted with a zinc-limited [1 μM] environment; and iii) ADH5 is linked with the production of ethanol, predominantly at pH 4.5. A successful metabolic engineering strategy is detailed which increases the product portfolio of S. cerevisiae, currently used for large-scale production of bioethanol. Abstract:
When exposed to aggressive environment, reinforced concrete structures are subject to a degradation mechanism that affects their integrity. Among various environmental attacks, the corrosion of RC structures is considered the most dangerous. The process is launched by the penetration of aggressive agents, precisely the chlorides and carbon dioxide into the concrete. The chlorides induce a localized corrosion, also called pitting corrosion, while on the other hand the carbon dioxide leads to a general corrosion called uniform corrosion. This corrosion phenomenon depends on several factors such as the materials characteristics, loadings, geometry and the environment. All these components include different levels of uncertainties that are taken into account throughout a probabilistic approach. In this work, we propose two models for the corrosion mechanisms induced separately by the chlorides and the carbon dioxide. These models take into account the effect of the climatic condition that is mainly described by the temperature and the relative humidity. In addition to that, as a study case we have treated in details the Lebanese climatic context. We have proposed a physical model of steel corrosion in reinforced concrete beams that occurs in two phases : - An initiation phase where aggressive agents like the chlorides and carbon dioxide penetrate into the concrete and reach a critical concentration values causing the depassivation of the steel ; - A propagation phase in which the active corrosion of steel decreases the strength of the beam leading to its failure. All the factors that have uncertainties are treated as random variables. Several probabilistic models are listed and discussed in the literature while only the models that match with our context are selected. The reliability analysis allowed us to assess the reliability of beams subjected to corrosion in ULS and SLS. The loss of steel section due to the corrosion mechanism induces a decrease of the bearing beam capacity, and an increase in the tension stress in the concrete. This causes an increase of the width of cracks openings. Thus, taking into account the serviceability limit state, the safety margin goes to zero when the width of crack opening exceeds the acceptable width as recommended by the Eurocode 2. The limit state function in ULS is the bending strength. The failure occurs when the applied moment equals or surpasses the resisting moment. The reliability calculations are carried out using Monte-Carlo simulations. Finally, several applications to the corrosion model are proposed via this work. The first application concerns the sensitivity analysis of the corrosion models for the different parameters. The effects of the mean values and the variability of the random variables on the model response are also examined. The impact of climatic factors on the corrosion phenomenon took the biggest part of this work. We have applied the chloride’s corrosion model with the real temperatures and relative humidity of three coastal cities having different climatic characteristics. Then a comparative study showing the effect of the ba rdiameters and the cover thickness on the reliability of the RC beam subjected to aggressive environment is carried out. (...)
