Abstract:
Based on the first widely presented in Russia exhibition of works by the Russian emigrant artist Konstantin Ivanovich Gorbatov (1876–1945) organized in 2021 by the State Museum of History and Art ‘New Jerusalem’ with the participation of museum and private collections, the author analyzes a part of the master’s pictorial heritage dedicated to Italy. A graduate of the Imperial Academy of Arts and a follower of the Russian impressionist tradition, Gorbatov first came to Italy during his retirement trip in 1912. There he was able to feel the power of color and the influence of the light and aerial environment on the transformation of color, and forever remained faithful to the Italian landscape. Having left their homeland in 1922, Gorbatov and his wife settled in Berlin but made numerous journeys to Italy, where he always worked a lot. While staying in Capri, he would travel along the Italian coast, creating his chronicle of charming towns scattered on the coastal cliffs and poetic landscapes inspired by the emerald color of the sea and the bright sun. The subject of the research is the paintings by K.I. Gorbatov dedicated to Italy and his Notes on Art and Life that provide comments on the peculiarities of the master’s perception of nature, vision of color and balance of colors, and his work with color. The research aims to study K.I. Gorbatov’s works in the context of life and work of the Russian artistic emigration in Europe in the second quarter of the 20th century through the analysis of his Italian landscapes, and to analyze the master’s creative method using archival materials. This will contribute to raising understanding and awareness of his art among Russian viewers who were deprived of the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the artist’s work for a long time. The development of the declared research topic involves the application of the interdisciplinary approach, archival, empirical, and iconographic methods, and comparative, artistic and stylistic analyses.

Abstract:
CAPRI is a member of the GAP1 family of GTPase-activating proteins (GAPs) for small G proteins. It is known to function as an amplitude sensor for intracellular Ca2+ levels stimulated by extracellular signals and has a catalytic domain with dual RasGAP and RapGAP activities. Here, we have investigated the mechanism that switches CAPRI between its two GAP activities. We demonstrate that CAPRI forms homodimers in vitro and in vivo in a Ca2+-dependent manner. The site required for dimerization was pinpointed by deletion and point mutations to a helix motif that forms a hydrophobic face in the extreme C-terminal tail of the CAPRI protein. Deletion of this helix motif abolished dimer formation but did not affect translocation of CAPRI to the plasma membrane upon cell stimulation with histamine. We found that dimeric and monomeric CAPRI coexist in cells and that the ratio of dimeric to monomeric CAPRI increases upon cell stimulation with histamine. Free Ca2+ at physiologically relevant concentrations was both necessary and sufficient for dimer formation. Importantly, the monomeric and dimeric forms of CAPRI exhibited differential GAP activities in vivo; the wild-type form of CAPRI had stronger RapGAP activity than RasGAP activity, whereas a monomeric CAPRI mutant showed stronger RasGAP than RapGAP activity. These results demonstrate that CAPRI switches between its dual GAP roles by forming monomers or homodimers through a process regulated by Ca2+. We propose that Ca2+-dependent dimerization of CAPRI may serve to coordinate Ras and Rap1 signaling pathways.

Full text
Abstract:
Considered as the "stereotype of the fin-de-siècle dandy and pederast", Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen (1880-1923) is the author of several literary works (novels, poetry and critics) which enter the corpus of the "minor decadents" in the history of literature. If Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen did illustrate the stereotypes of French Decadence, an attentive reading of his works invites to open other perspectives and to look differently at the author who published in Poesia, the review of Futurism, and who founded in 1909 the review Akademos, in the aim of rehabilitating homosexuality. The themes of elevation, pride and pagan renaissance in his poetry and novels make him a pioneer of gay pride. His work swing between two centuries, as a transition between decadence and pagan renewal, between the homosexual "martyr" and the "activist", between the Greek ephebe and the contemporary schoolboy. His anchorages in arrière-garde literary movements, like Parnasse, Symbolism or Decadence, keep him in the 19th century. But his support to avant-garde Futurism and his fight for homosexuality make him enter the 20th century. Far from the image of the "poète maudit" condemned by his contemporaries, he left a desire of light and elevation which overcome the complacency for twilights ; he lived a life of freedom, of will power and of pride, illustrated by multiple choices : the choice of Capri, of the boy and of the speech against the silence

Paris, EPHE, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012EPHE4026.

Abstract:
M. N. Ferrien-Gayral has built this thesis by starting from italian chiaroscuro woodcuts kept in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, she has partially inventiored, and which have been the subject of original scientific analysis. The first part focuses on the materials and techniques. The italian printmakers create sometimes these color prints from two woodblocks; more frequently, they adopt the process with three to five interdependent blocks, Ugo da Carpi develops in the 1510s to interpret closely the masters chiaroscuro drawings and their tonal gradations. The study first examines the woods, and then the various methods used to set, prior to cutting, the lines, planes and highlight areas of the inventor's drawing on the different blocks. The valuable analysis of the inks (specially of their pigmentary mixtures) carried out by the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France (C2RMF) are subsequently reported and compared with data relating to ancient oily inks composition provided by texts. Other compelling findings emerged from the watermarks and papers structure study. The blocks printings are superimposed on the sheet of paper; the registration is delicate. In the second part, a chapter is dedicated to the actors involved in the production and diffusion of chiaroscuro woodcuts; it deals with the identification of cutters and printers, and the fundamental question of the collaboration between painters (often renowned, as Raphael and Parmigianino) and their woodcutters, it then addresses publishers and distributors. The following chapter is about the public of these works

Abstract:
An experimental study was carried out concerning the optimization of catalyst type, operating conditions, addition of water and hydrogen for use in the THAI-CAPRI process and is reported. Three feeds namely, THAI field oil, Combustion Cell Oil (CCO) and n-decane were used in the presence of catalyst or an inert medium for comparison. Experiments were carried out using micro-reactors containing 5 g catalyst under different temperatures, pressures and gas environments. It was found that there was a trade-off in operation temperature between upgrading performance and catalyst lifetime. At higher temperatures of 500 °C led to an average of 6.1 °API upgrading , however, the catalyst lifetime was limited to 1.5 hours. Operation at 420 °C was found to be a suitable compromise, with upgrading limited up to 3 °API, with catalyst lifetime extended to 77.5 hours. From the results of the current study it can be said that by careful control of the temperature and oil flow rate in the in-situ CAPRI process, additional upgrading compared with the THAI process alone may be effected, resulting in a more valuable produced oil, which is easier to transport and could be further processed into distillates.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2007.
This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 215-222).
This thesis presents a new approach to root cause localization and fault diagnosis in the Internet based on a Common Architecture for Probabilistic Reasoning in the Internet (CAPRI) in which distributed, heterogeneous diagnostic agents efficiently conduct diagnostic tests and communicate observations, beliefs, and knowledge to probabilistically infer the cause of network failures. Unlike previous systems that can only diagnose a limited set of network component failures using a limited set of diagnostic tests, CAPRI provides a common, extensible architecture for distributed diagnosis that allows experts to improve the system by adding new diagnostic tests and new dependency knowledge. To support distributed diagnosis using new tests and knowledge, CAPRI must overcome several challenges including the extensible representation and communication of diagnostic information, the description of diagnostic agent capabilities, and efficient distributed inference. Furthermore, the architecture must scale to support diagnosis of a large number of failures using many diagnostic agents.
(cont.) To address these challenges, this thesis presents a probabilistic approach to diagnosis based on an extensible, distributed component ontology to support the definition of new classes of components and diagnostic tests; a service description language for describing new diagnostic capabilities in terms of their inputs and outputs; and a message processing procedure for dynamically incorporating new information from other agents, selecting diagnostic actions, and inferring a diagnosis using Bayesian inference and belief propagation. To demonstrate the ability of CAPRI to support distributed diagnosis of real-world failures, I implemented and deployed a prototype network of agents on Planetlab for diagnosing HTTP connection failures. Approximately 10,000 user agents and 40 distributed regional and specialist agents on Planetlab collect information from over 10,000 users and diagnose over 140,000 failures using a wide range of active and passive tests, including DNS lookup tests, connectivity probes, Rockettrace measurements, and user connection histories.
(cont.) I show how to improve accuracy and cost by learning new dependency knowledge and introducing new diagnostic agents. I also show that agents can manage the cost of diagnosing many similar failures by aggregating related requests and caching observations and beliefs.

Abstract:
The paper analyses some new elements introduced by Bunin in the perception of Italy in the light of the traditional vision codified in the Italian narrative of the Russian culture between the 19th and the early 20th century. In the first place, Bunin differentiates himself choosing Capri, an unusual destination, for his long stays in Italy. Moreover, in his description of nature, he does not resort to the intermediation of visual or literary arts, instead, he aesthetically elevates Italy’s nature recreating images that recall the connection with the absolute. He delineates a wider vision of a concept that is dear to the Russian travelers when it comes to the perception of Italy as a spiritual homeland, a concept that is not limited to the cultural link between Italy and Russia mediated by Byzantium, but reaches out to the Levantine East, embodying universal cultural and spiritual values. It highlights in the surrounding reality and everyday habits the features of an ancient cultural tradition that is brought to life in the present, reiterating the uninterrupted relation with the past.

Abstract:
The oldest medieval domus in Ravello date back to the twelfth century, as an evolution of the original house with barrel vaults, a primitive stone construction with walls of dry masonry of limestone and almost always connected to an olive grove or a vineyard, widespread on the Campania coasts between the island of Capri, the coast of Sorrento and that of Amalfi. Vertical and horizontal aggregations of this module have constituted, over time, the evolution of the building typology, while retaining some of the pre-existing architectural elements and the peculiar construction characteristics, including the strong link of this architecture with the particular orography of the territory. The private building complexes are the result of this ongoing process, consisting of various rooms connected to each other and arranged on several levels, in which the members of a single family lived with their servants. The entire structure was surrounded by walls and defended by towers. The interiors consisted of rooms heated by fireplaces, kitchens, furnaces, Arab baths, cisterns, wells, cellars, warehouses, stables, rooms for winemaking, gardens and cultivated terraces. The paper analyzes the history and construction features of one of the few medieval domus still existing and which has not undergone substantial transformations, also because it was brought to light only in the last decade of the twentieth century, currently located in the boundaries of Villa Rufolo in Ravello. Its original conformation is hypothesized, thanks also to a description made of it in the archive documents. The paper also reports the work carried out on the case study in order to undertake a cataloguing of a heritage in continuous discovery.

Torre, Costanza. SSHAP, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/sshap.2022.023.

Full text
Abstract:
La recherche était basée au Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa, London School of Economics.
