Abstract:

Garcia, Heriberto. "A Capability Maturity Model to Assess Supply Chain Performance." FIU Digital Commons, 2008. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/191.

Full text
Abstract:
In an overcapacity world, where the customers can choose from many similar products to satisfy their needs, enterprises are looking for new approaches and tools that can help them not only to maintain, but also to increase their competitive edge. Innovation, flexibility, quality, and service excellence are required to, at the very least, survive the on-going transition that industry is experiencing from mass production to mass customization. In order to help these enterprises, this research develops a Supply Chain Capability Maturity Model named S(CM)2. The Supply Chain Capability Maturity Model is intended to model, analyze, and improve the supply chain management operations of an enterprise. The Supply Chain Capability Maturity Model provides a clear roadmap for enterprise improvement, covering multiple views and abstraction levels of the supply chain, and provides tools to aid the firm in making improvements. The principal research tool applied is the Delphi method, which systematically gathered the knowledge and experience of eighty eight experts in Mexico. The model is validated using a case study and interviews with experts in supply chain management. The resulting contribution is a holistic model of the supply chain integrating multiple perspectives, and providing a systematic procedure for the improvement of a company’s supply chain operations.

Goh, Cheng Siew, and 吳卿秀. "Development of a capability maturity model for sustainable construction." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/209479.

Full text
Abstract:
Increasing public awareness on the environmental and social growth has promoted the application of sustainable development in construction. The triple bottom line, namely economy, society and environment is generally recognised as significant dimensions for measuring the performance of sustainability. However, most research often puts their focus on environmental issues, rather than the whole sustainability concept. The implementation of sustainable construction also differs greatly from one practice to another, since its definition and principles are still highly debatable. Additionally, it appears that various standards and certifications in the market do not embrace three pillars – environmental, social and economic sustainability in their assessments either. To incorporate the best value of sustainable construction, it is crucial to determine the gap between stakeholders’ expectations and actual deliverables of sustainable construction. Therefore, this research aims to explore and determine the maturity status of sustainable development implementation in the current construction industry. The Sustainable Construction Maturity Model (SCMM) is developed to assist construction stakeholders in gaining a richer understanding on the practices of sustainable construction. Pilot interviews were conducted to determine the appropriateness of research methods as well as to validate the SCMM. The research employed in-depth interviews and case studies as principal research methods to develop deeper insights of the development of sustainable construction, by triangulating data sources. A supplement questionnaire survey was also used to have a meta-analysis on the results obtained. The empirical evidence implies that sustainable construction could be practised at two extremes – exceptionally high and low maturity, regardless of sectors. This large gap suggests that the development of sustainable construction are rather diverged and fragmented in the industry. Although social and economic sustainability may not be absolutely excluded, current sustainable practices tend to put more effort on environmental sustainability. A loss of balance in achieving the three pillars may undermine the full potential of realising sustainable construction. Additionally, the research also found that good coordination between stakeholders is required not only during the design and construction stages but also in the post occupancy stage. Building a good sustainability culture could always bring more significant implications on the maturity status of sustainable construction, rather than the built-in high technology facilities in the built environment. To transform the built environment into a holistic sustainable development world, striking a balance of the triple bottom line is required. This research can steer the construction community to improve their performance in attaining the goals of sustainable construction. The SCMM can also provide an objective and consistent assessment tool to manage sustainable capability and capacity and to position the current performance level. By having a better understanding of the overall development of sustainable construction, practitioners can shape their future directions and strategies better and, in turn move sustainability performance in construction to a higher level of maturity. Since sustainable construction emphasises long terms development, continual efforts shall be made to achieve sustainability.

Allgood, Christian. "The Claims Library Capability Maturity Model: Evaluating a Claims Library." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/10007.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the problem that plagues Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) software is its development cost. Many software companies forego the usability engineering aspect of their projects due to the time required to design and test user interfaces. Unfortunately, there is no "silver bullet" for user interface design and implementation because they are inherently difficult tasks. As computers are moving off the desktop, the greatest challenge for designers will be integrating these systems seamlessly into our everyday lives. The potential for reuse in user interfaces lies in reducing the time and effort required for this task, without sacrificing design quality. In this work we begin with an iterative development cycle for a claims library based on prominent literature within the HCI and software engineering fields. We constructed the Claims Library to be a repository of potentially reusable notification system claims. We examine the library through theoretical and practical perspectives. The theoretical perspective reveals tradeoffs in the initial implementation that relate to Krueger's taxonomy of reuse. The practical perspective stems from experience in designing and conducting usability testing for an in-vehicle input device using the Claims Library. While valuable, these examinations did not provide a distinct method of improving the library. Expecting to uncover a specific diagnosis for the problems in the library, it was unclear how they should be approached with further development efforts. With this realization, we saw that a more important and immediate contribution would not be another iteration of the Claims Library design. Rather, a clarification of the underlying theory that would better inform future systems development seemed a more urgent and worthy use of our experience. This clarification would need to have several characteristics to include: composed of a staged or prioritized architecture, represents an ideal model grounded in literature, and possesses intermediate development objectives and assessment points. As a solution, we propose the Claims Library Capability Maturity Model (CL-CMM), based on the theoretical deficiencies that should guide development of a claims library, as noted in the two evaluations. This thesis delivers a five-stage model to include process areas, goals, and practices that address larger threads of concern. Our capability maturity model is patterned after models in software engineering and human resource management. We include a full description of each stage, a gap analysis method of appraisal, and an example of its use. Several directions for future work are noted that are necessary to continue development and validation of the model.

Rodrigo, Vitharanage. "Development of an e-business capability maturity model for construction organisations." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2016. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/32277/.

Full text
Abstract:
E-business is defined as the use of ICT and internet related technologies to create new ways of conducting business activities. It has been identified as an innovative approach for construction organisations to gain substantial benefits and to improve productivity and efficiency of processes. However, the uptake of ebusiness in the construction industry has been comparatively limited and ineffective. There is a need of a tool to evaluate and review construction ebusiness process execution and performance for further improvements. This research aims to develop a capability maturity model to systematically identify current status of e-business processes as a method of enhancing process efficiency in construction organisations. In order to achieve this aim, a multi-method qualitative research design was adopted. Initially an analysis of existing construction process maps were carried out to establish a conceptual construction process categorisation. Then two rounds of Delphi based expert forum interviews were conducted to verify the conceptual process categorisation. In the second stage of research design, an analysis of existing process maturity models were carried out to identify construction e-business process maturity characteristics. These characteristics were verified through an expert forum and further ratified using three case studies. In the third stage, Construction E-Business Capability Maturity (CeB-CMM) and its user interface were developed using verified construction process categorisation and ratified construction e-business process maturity characteristics. Finally, CeB-CMM was validated by applying it to four construction organisation using CeB-CMM user interface. This research contributed to the existing body of knowledge by developing CeB-CMM and its user interface. Furthermore, this research established a construction process categorisation and determined the construction e-business process maturity characteristics. It is anticipated that the developed tool can be used by construction organisations as a tool to systematically evaluate their current ebusiness process maturity and provide them a pathway to further improve those processes.

Yang, Kann-Jang. "Process modelling to support software development under the capability maturity model." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/11636.

Full text
Abstract:
Before the technique of software components is mature, we believe that the software process is another essential topic for "manufacturing software products". The steps in the software process must be defined very precisely and carefully. Process-centred Software Engineering Environments (PSEEs) are viewed by many as a way to assist developers in the execution of their work. Research has produced a variety of PSEEs providing support for management and technical activities. However, no consensus has formed on the issue of which process is the most appropriate one. The Capability Maturity Model for Software (CMM), developed by Software Engineering Institute in Carnegie Mellon University, provides software organisations with guidance on how to gain control of their processes for developing and maintaining software. For the last few years, some organisations have successfully improved their software process maturity by using the CMM. This research builds a PSEE, called SPI (Software Process Improvement) PASTA, that models the CMM by using the process notation PASTA (Process and Artefact State Machine Transition Abstraction). There are two reasons for doing this research. Firstly, we believe that a PSEE must comply with a framework of continuous process improvement, such as the CMM, in order to get to the right destination. Secondly, in any context in which the CMM is applied, a reasonable interpretation of the practices should be used. The CMM must be appropriately interpreted for different size projects and software organisations. The SPI PASTA provides a framework for continuous improvement of the process. This framework complies with a supporting knowledge transfer and implementation services architecture that makes it possible to achieve higher software process maturity.

Adeniyi, Onaopepo. "Capability maturity model for assessing flood resilience capabilities of the built environment." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2017. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/32547/.

Full text
Abstract:
Disasters often result in severe socio-economic losses, although there is significant progress in dealing with the social aspect, economic aspect is addressed relatively insufficiently. Therefore, the capabilities of organisations in managing disasters need to be improved, and there should be a way of assessing these capabilities. Hence, this study used capability maturity model (CMM) methodology to develop an assessment method that identifies the built environment flood resilience capabilities of micro, small and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs). Towards achieving the aim of the study, a conceptual model was developed using the capability areas identified from the literature. The model was then verified and refined by an expert forum. The conceptual model was further improved in case studies, applied in case organisations and after that validated; this resulted in the final model. This study identified 19 capability areas for enhancing built environment flood resilience and developed a capability maturity model that contains maturity level definitions ranging from level 1 (Ad hoc) to level 5 (Optimising). The outcome of this study provides both theoretical and practical contributions to knowledge. Among the theoretical contributions are the identified and verified built environment flood resilience capability areas for MSMEs. The capability areas can be adopted for use in subsequent studies. Also, the application of capability maturity modelling (CMM) in disaster resilience of the built environment is novel, this has expanded the boundary of CMM application. The practical contributions of the study include the identified capability areas, the capability level definitions and the capability maturity model for profiling MSMEs and benchmarking the capabilities of businesses for built environment flood resilience. The model indicates what needs to be carried out to achieve a higher capability maturity level for flood resilience.

Al, Hanaee Ebrahim Hamad Salem Sulaiman. "DF-C²M² : a comprehensive capability maturity model for digital forensics organisations." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2016. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/82480/.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of digital forensics has grown from an obscure area of interest amongst computer enthusiasts to become an emerging forensic scientific discipline of great significance in criminal investigations and civil litigations across the globe. The majority of digital forensic laboratories today are faced with ever-increasing legal and regulatory demands to meet internationally accepted rules regarding the admissibility of digital evidence, as well as being faced with various pending regulatory mandates requiring international accreditation of digital forensic facilities. These two major requirements, coupled with ever-increasing case backlogs and limited resources, have left many digital forensic labs to confront what initially seems to be an ‘insurmountable challenge’ to manage their caseloads, implement new regulatory requirements, and still find ways to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness. Based on the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) paradigms, the Digital Forensics - Comprehensive Capability Maturity Model (DF-C²M²) was born out of the findings of this research and the scientific gap that exists in the current digital forensics standards, best practices, frameworks, and models. This model has been developed through consultations and interviews with digital forensics experts. The DF-C²M² enables the measurement of maturity along three key organisational dimensions: people, processes, and tools, while enabling such an assessment to be tailored to a particular type of organisation, e.g., law enforcement or non-law enforcement. The inclusion of capability maturity across multiple key domains is designed to provide a more comprehensive capability maturity assessment of an organisation – across its three inter-dependants ‘influencer’ domains, when compared with other capability maturity models that focus on only specific domains such as processes, or on a sub-element of a domain. The model has been tested and evaluated as a management support and Capability Maturity Assessment system within two labs. One of the labs is an ISO 17025 accredited digital forensic lab within a law enforcement agency, while the other one is a non-accredited lab within an academic institute. The model will also serve as a stepping stone towards a timelier, more effective, and more efficient means of developing and implementing digital forensic standards and best practices moving forward. In summary, the DF-C²M² was designed to address the cited challenges by creating a modular management decision support framework to enable labs to better manage and achieve their objectives through a system of assessments and planning tools all geared towards measuring compliance and Capability Maturity across multiple domains.

Abstract:
Business Process Management (BPM) maturity models are tools that help organizations in determining the capabilities required to progress in their BPM ambitions. However, the disparity of key components across different maturity models and lack of assessment tools to gauge maturity, limits the applicability of the models. Following Design Science Research and Content Analysis methods, this research presents two artifacts to address these issues: (i) a meta-model that captures the structure of BPM maturity models and (ii) a maturity grid for BPM Strategic-Alignment capabilities as an example of a ‘ready to use’ assessment tool to measure BPM maturity in organizations.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Innovation is widely considered a key prerequisite for achieving organisational competitiveness and sustained long-term wealth in our increasingly volatile business environment. It is therefore imperative that organisations enable themselves to relentlessly pursue constant innovation; to grow and mature their innovation capability. A study aimed at organisational support by means of business tools toward maturity growth in these innovation capability areas is therefore warranted. Knowledge management plays a fundamental role in the enterprise’s ability to innovate successfully, and the question arises whether knowledge management tools and organisational facilitating conditions can be used to grow innovation capability maturity. The existing literature on the subject is sparse, which led to the following research problem statement: No formal guidelines exist for the use of knowledge management to grow innovation capability maturity. Knowledge conversion is a prominent theme within the knowledge management field. Knowledge creation processes form the core of this knowledge creation model and therefore, one solution to the above-stated problem is to investigate the use of knowledge creation processes to grow innovation capability maturity. This notion provides the platform for aligning knowledge creation processes to the requirements for innovation capability growth from one maturity level to the next as the cornerstone for developing a knowledge management framework that enables innovation capability maturity growth. In order to align these knowledge processes with the requirements for growth in innovation capability maturity, the author identified a knowledge creation path as a key enabler for maturity growth in each innovation capability area. Knowledge management tools and organisational facilitating conditions that support the specific knowledge processes highlighted in the identified path were identified through a literature study and subsequently synthesised to form a framework. The impact of this framework lies in providing guidelines for the use of knowledge management as a vehicle for innovation capability maturity growth.

Abstract:
Purchasing activities are defined as the essential activities associated with the acquisition of the materials, services and equipment used in a business organisation. They are significant functions because they help organisations to realise many benefits such as cost reduction, improved material delivery, a shorter cycle time, access to product and process technology and quality improvement. This can only be achieved if an organisation performs its purchasing activities effectively and efficiently. There are four purchasing development frameworks, or models, that are helpful in evaluating the purchasing activity in an organization. These are: Stannack, P. and Jones, M. (1988) Model, Reck and Long, (1988) Model, Jones, D.M., (1999) Model and Arjan V. (2000), Model. However, it was concluded that these models were nonoperational and merely indicate the stage of development of the purchasing activity. The shortfall of these approaches is that they have no "standard" development criteria that organizations can follow to evaluate their purchasing activities. These models also have a limited number of development measurement variables. In an attempt to overcome these shortfalls and identify factors that affect purchasing improvements, a purchasing development model was developed. The aim of this research is to produce a new purchasing maturity model (PurchMM) based on a wide variety of purchasing parameters that have been discovered during the literature review. The Readiness PurchMM describes an evolutionary improvement path for purchasing function from an ad hoc, immature process to a mature, well-organized one. Five levels of maturity encompass this path. The Readiness PurchMM guides purchasing functions that wants to gain control of their purchasing activities for improving, developing the performance of the purchasing functions, maintaining

Abstract:
Business Process Management, the object of this thesis, has still growing importance in the functioning of the organization, and has a positive impact on its success. In the view of a dynamic market environment, Business Process Management has an inherent importance in the strategic business development. When an organization decides to implement process control and manage its activities, it should be also able to measure its processes and evaluate them. This ability gives the organization the possibility to efficiently and effectively manage processes and identify shortcomings for creation of business strategy on a competitive market. This dissertation presents a new evaluation model of a process control in the production systems, which organizations can use as a guide for further development. This work brings a new perspective in the field of process control and its evaluation of the production systems. The main objective of this dissertation is to design the assessment of the process control levels in the production systems on the basis of theoretical research and practical experience. The proposed solution was then verified by field research in selected organizations.

Abstract:
Abstract Software process assessment and improvement came under the spotlight in the discussion of software engineering when the Software Engineering Institute published the maturity model for software process capability determination in 1987. Since then, several new approaches and standards have been developed. This thesis introduces a European software process assessment and improvement methodology called BOOTSTRAP, which was initially developed in an ESPRIT project starting from lean and kaizen philosophy. The focus is on the evolution of methodology and how it was developed, using an experimental research approach. The work covers also enhancements to the methodology investigated in the SPICE, PROFES and TAPISTRY projects. The enhancements expand the original methodology into new specific application areas, keep it compliant with new quality standards and certification, improve the efficiency of the assessment method, enhance the focus from process to product and strengthen improvement monitoring and support. To address these areas, the new BOOTSTRAP methodology releases offer tailored and enhanced assessment reference models and enhanced assessment and improvement methods. The new features also facilitate more frequent and even continuous assessments with software measurement-based indicators. The thesis explains the origin and features of BOOTSTRAP software process assessment and improvement methodology and how it was developed for professional use. The discussion starts with the evolution of the methodology. Then the new trends and demands are introduced and new features of the BOOTSTRAP methodology described. The conclusion discusses how the methodology developed to be able successfully to support professional software process assessment, to align it with the evolution of software engineering, to adopt the features and requirements of the underlying standards in order to conform to the requirements set by ISO 15504 standard and to become validated in practice

Binza, Lungile. "Factors influencing the decision to transition from Multi-Channel to Omni-Channel – A Banking Perspective." Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32603.

Full text
Abstract:
Banking through insufficiently coordinated and non-integrated channels (Multi-Channel) is slowly being discarded. With Omni-Channel banking, where channels are integrated and data and information are shared across cross channels, customers are in control of the channels they wish to use. Factors influencing the organisational decision to transition from Multi-Channel to Omni-Channel hasn't been fully explored. Is this decision responding to internal factors like efficiency improvements, or is it driven by external factors like customer demands, trying to enhance customer experience, gaining competitive advantage over the competitors, expanding the business by introducing new business models, or trying to gain access to smart technologies for financial benefit? This dissertation presents research findings into the investigation of factors that influence the organisational decision to transition from Multi-Channel to Omni-Channel banking. A positivist case study with inductive reasoning was adopted. Qualitative data was collected from a single organisation through interviews together with observations of the strategy documents between January 2019 and April 2019. An initial conceptual model was derived from the literature review to guide data collection, after which thematic analysis was used to analyse the data and develop an emergent theory. The key findings from the research study are that a customer centric approach informs the decision to transition. The customer is at the centre of the omni-channel strategy: that is through an enhanced customer experience or timeously responding to customer demands. Other factors are either enabling this strategy, like technological innovations, and efficiency improvements or are the outcome of the strategy like customer satisfaction, revenue or cost optimisation, and competitive advantage. The key implications are that organisations must pay more attention to the customer journey and ensure that they advance in the Customer Experience Capability Maturity Model. Most successful business transitions to the Omni-Channel strategy require a transformation in organizational culture, operations and processes, and the underlying technologies.

Ongel, Begum. "Assessing Risk Management Maturity: A Framework For The Construction Companies." Master's thesis, METU, 2009. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12611457/index.pdf.

Abstract:
Due to its complex nature, risk and uncertainty are more widespread in construction industry than many other industries. Aiming to ensure that all project objectives are met, risk management is considered as a critical success factor for construction projects. The core elements of risk management are now known and used by many organizations. On the other hand, as declared by Project Management Institute (PMI), the ability to measure the effectiveness in managing risk is one of the most important areas that risk management needs to be developed in. Designed to assess the capability of a project or an organization in a particular area, a maturity model aids in determining strengths and weaknesses, and to target improvement strategies accordingly. Several maturity models have been developed for the area of risk management and furthermore, an attempt to adapt a generic risk management maturity model to the construction industry was specified from the literature. All in all, when examined, it was seen that most of these models outline the topics to be investigated in a maturity assessment and provide guidance in terms of content. It was believed that a practical approach was needed and the diagnostic characteristics of these models should be enhanced. Therefore, the aim of this study was to propose a construction risk management maturity framework, together with an easily applicable and effective questionnaire. To achieve this aim, six outstanding risk management maturity models were examined, and the proposed model was further supported with construction-specific attributes such as construction supply chain issues. The applicability of the model was tested through case studies conducted with five large scale Turkish construction companies. The results were evaluated and interpreted for each company and the gathered data were further investigated through statistical tests for certain comparisons. Finally, the questionnaire was revised with respect to the feedback received from the case studies.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the phases of change process of integrating a quality development model into an information technology company in Turkey. While the transformation phases were being examined by a qualitative study, the factors that affect the change process also were investigated. This study explores the process of traveling through the way to CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) level 3 certification by a company that gives information technologies service to banking sector. Since circulation of staff prevents us from obtaining what an exact number of workers, the company has about 450 employees. At the beginning, the company had no quality standards and most of the work processes were not documented, even documented processes were not consistent. After the commencement of the quality development project, work flows of processes were defined and documented. The company changed its organization according to the new process improvement model, called CMMI. In this case study, interviews performed with ten experts from inside of the company and three experts from outside of the company, observation diaries and assets of the company were data sources. Participant observation, questionnaire and document analysis were used as data gathering methods. Collected data were interpreted by descriptive analysis. As a result of the research, while resistance to change came out naturally, it is determined that transformation has four stages such as: &ldquo
motivation and adoption&rdquo
, &ldquo
adaptation&rdquo
, &ldquo
acceptance and implementation&rdquo
and finally &ldquo
use and improvement&rdquo

Wheeler, Creed R. "Implementation of the People Capability Maturity Model with Technical Support Personnel in Volusia County School District." NSUWorks, 2006. http://nsuworks.nova.edu/gscis_etd/917.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem addressed was that many school districts do not have the operational funding to provide sufficient technology support. Whereas large companies strive to have at least one professional technology support person for every 50 computers, few school districts can afford to fund this ratio. Further, technology support is frequently ignored in the school district if it comes at the expense of hiring teachers to provide educational opportunities or reducing class sizes for students. The People Capability Maturity Model (P-CMM) is a tool for managing and developing an organization's workforce practices. A 6-month application of the P-CMM was applied to a Support Services Department in Volusia County School District in Florida. The goal was to explore the effectiveness of the application of the P-CMM in improving the use of best practices in a limited technology support personnel department. The results describe a single-case study of the application of the P-CMM model to a public school district technology support department. The IDEAL (Initiating, Diagnosing, Establishing, Acting, and Learning) process was used in applying the P-CMM. During the initiating phase, participation was gained and an overview of the P-CMM was provided. At the diagnosing phase, a questionnaire and a gap analysis found that the organization was assessed at Level 2 of the P-CMM. The area of Training and Development was identified as particularly weak in the organization, and during the establishing phase it was identified as the focus for the application. Competency Analysis was administered to determine what training was required. At the acting phase, an action plan was developed. During the learning phase, the questionnaire and the gap analysis were repeated to assess changes in workforce competencies. Although the organization did not reach Level 3 of the P-CMM, competencies were identified and improvements were made in Training and Development. This case study may be used as a model for replication in other school districts or organizations that need to improve the use of limited technology support in their organization.

Abstract:
Western countries' information technology and software intensive firms are increasingly producing software and IT services in developing countries. With this swift advancement in offshoring, there are many issues that can be investigated which will enable companies to maximize their benefits from offshoring. However, significant challenges can occur throughout the lifecycle of offshoring IT service projects that turn the potential benefits into losses. This research investigated CMM/CMMI best practices and their effects on managing and mitigating critical issues associated with offshore development. Using a web based survey, data was collected from 451 Information Technology and software development firms in the US. The survey instrument was validated by an expert panel which included practitioners and researchers. The survey population consisted of Information Technology and software engineering managers who work on offshore IT and software development projects. Statistical methods including Chi Square and Cramer's V were used to test the research hypotheses. The results of the analysis show that IT companies applying CMM/CMMI models have fewer issues associated with IT offshoring. When US IT companies utilize and incorporate different practices from TSP and People CMM into CMMI for DEV/SVC and CMMI for ACQ, they have fewer offshoring issues related to language barriers and cultural differences. The results of this research contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the offshoring of IT services from the client management perspective and provide practitioners with increased knowledge regarding IT offshoring decisions.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this thesis is to develop a data quality scorecard (DQS) that aligns the data quality needs of the Data warehouse stakeholder group with selected data quality dimensions. To comprehend the research domain, a general and systematic literature review (SLR) was carried out, after which the research scope was established. Using Design Science Research (DSR) as the methodology to structure the research, three iterations were carried out to achieve the research aim highlighted in this thesis. In the first iteration, as DSR was used as a paradigm, the artefact was build from the results of the general and systematic literature review conduct. A data quality scorecard (DQS) was conceptualised. The result of the SLR and the recommendations for designing an effective scorecard provided the input for the development of the DQS. Using a System Usability Scale (SUS), to validate the usability of the DQS, the results of the first iteration suggest that the DW stakeholders found the DQS useful. The second iteration was conducted to further evaluate the DQS through a run through in the FMCG domain and then conducting a semi-structured interview. The thematic analysis of the semi-structured interviews demonstrated that the stakeholder's participants' found the DQS to be transparent; an additional reporting tool; Integrates; easy to use; consistent; and increases confidence in the data. However, the timeliness data dimension was found to be redundant, necessitating a modification to the DQS. The third iteration was conducted with similar steps as the second iteration but with the modified DQS in the oil and gas domain. The results from the third iteration suggest that DQS is a useful tool that is easy to use on a daily basis. The research contributes to theory by demonstrating a novel approach to DQS design This was achieved by ensuring the design of the DQS aligns with the data quality concern areas of the DW stakeholders and the data quality dimensions. Further, this research lay a good foundation for the future by establishing a DQS model that can be used as a base for further development.

Abstract:
Smartphones are proliferating into the workplace at an ever-increasing rate, similarly the threats that they pose is increasing. In an era of constant connectivity and availability, information is freed up of constraints of time and place. This research project delves into the risks introduced by smartphones, and through multiple cases studies, a maturity measurement model is formulated. The model is based on recommendations from two leading information security frameworks, the COBIT 4.1 framework and ISO27002 code of practice. Ultimately, a combination of smartphone specific risks are integrated with key control recommendations, in providing a set of key measurable security maturity components. The subjective opinions of case study respondents are considered a key component in achieving a solution. The solution addresses the concerns of not only policy makers, but also the employees subjected to the security policies. Nurturing security awareness into organisational culture through reinforcement and employee acceptance is highlighted in this research project. Software consultancies can use this model to mitigate risks, while harnessing the potential strategic advantages of mobile computing through smartphone devices. In addition, this research project identifies the critical components of a smartphone security solution. As a result, a model is provided for software consultancies due to the intense reliance on information within these types of organisations. The model can be effectively applied to any information intensive organisation.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between level of organizational maturity with the performance of people management in research supporting foundations in Brazil. The theoretical fundamentation for the study of the topic organizational maturity in people Management included the works of Garrett & Rendon(2005), Cook & Visconti (2005), Curtis, Hefley and Miller (2001, 2002). As for the issue of people management performance there have been used the works of authors such as Boselie (2010), Paauwe (2009), Jordan Harney (2008), Mascarenhas (2008), Kaplan & Norton (2006),Boselie, Dietz and Boon ( 2005), Fitz-Enz (2001) and Guest (1997). It sought to investigate the relationship between the constructs maturity and performance in people management. Data collection was performed from October 22,2010 to January 27, 2011. The methodologyof this study involved a survey by addressing 74 questions concerning aspects of maturity and 44 related to the performance of people management in the research supporting foundations. Data were collected electronically, by using purposeful sampling, being subjects of the survey 13 valid respondents, occupants of positions of managers or departmental supervisors, who work and who were assigned to the human resources departments or areas related to peoplemanagement of research supporting foundations of federal universities nationwide. To evaluate the performance of people management, it was used a set of variables and indicators to measure, developed from the theoretical framework above. To evaluate the maturity levelof people management processes in these organizations, we used the People Capability Maturity Model (P-CMM), by Curtis, Hefley and Miller (2001, 2002). The data collected were used in statistical software suitable for carrying out quantitative analysis, considering theresearch objectives and analysis of results, which enabled the explanation of the relationship proposed for the research problem. The work results allowed to verify the existence of significant relationships between these constructs assessed (Maturity and Performance inPeople Management), and allows the formulation of recommendations for the enrichment of the models used, and for the management of people in the research supporting foundations.

Abstract:
The need for information systems has increased to a point where virtually all business environments require some sort of software to aid in its daily operations. This study will address the need for quality information systems by examining techniques which can potentially aid in producing consistent high-quality information systems. Two techniques in particular, namely Process Maturity Models (PMMs) and Systems Development Methodologies (SDMs) are examined. Process Maturity Models such as the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) as well as the ISO-9000 standards aid in standardising and improving an organisation’s information systems development processes. These Process Maturity Models often require either the use of certain Systems Development Methodologies or at the very least techniques used within some Systems Development Methodologies. Systems Development Methodologies refer to a set of development processes, tools, techniques etc. which can be used during software development to standardise the entire development process by offering the use of modelling techniques, tools to analyse requirements, illustration of processes etc. These techniques differ from one Systems Development Methodology to the next. This study aims to identify the relationship between Process Maturity Models and Systems Development Methodologies. During the research process a questionnaire was sent out to people within the information technology business environment. The questionnaire contained questions used to determine and measure the usage of Systems Development Methodologies and how projects were affected. The questionnaire was also used to do an informal assessment of each respondent’s Capability Maturity Model level. Furthermore the data retrieved was statistically analysed and the results were interpreted. The results indicate that a relationship exists between the use of SDMs and the success of the respondent’s development processes and developed products. A total of 73% of respondents indicated that they do use SDMs to some extent, the most common being the Systems Development Lifecycle (SDLC). The majority of organizations implementing SDMs have been doing so for three years or more. Results also show that most of the respondents are not certified in some formal Process Maturity Model; however, they do implement some of the processes required by models such as the CMMI. An informal assessment performed indicated that 65% of respondents can be grouped into a perceived CMMI level 2 category. Project outcome was measured and the relationship between PMM implementation as well as SDM use was measured. Results show no statistical evidence which indicates that an organisation’s perceived CMMI level is influenced by SDM use, both vertically and horizontally. Results do, however, indicate that organizations which have been implementing SDMs for a longer period of time are more likely to apply CMMI level 4 activities. Results also indicate that the horizontal use (number of projects/people which implement SDM knowledge) of SDMs have a significant effect on the development process- and the developed product success. Lastly the results indicated that organizations which satisfy more of the CMMI’s level 4 activities experience a higher quality development process which leads to a more successful development process.
