Abstract:
The oil-free lubrication seal of a piston rod plays an important role in the application of a Stirling engine. Parallel offset in a piston rod ruins the symmetry of the seal and affects the sealing performance when the seal is worn. In this paper, based on a motion analysis and the finite element method, a three-dimensional model of the Cap-seal was established, and its performance was numerically and experimentally investigated. The results show that parallel offset of the piston rod increases the possibility of seal damage and has no obvious effect on leakage. Under high pressures and low pre-compression ratios, the Cap-seal shows a good sealing capability and exhibits a higher propensity for mechanical damage. A good agreement was obtained between the numerical and experimental results. This study offers guidelines regarding the design and application of oil-free lubrication seals for a Stirling piston rod.

Lack of radiator water in the 5K Kijang car cooling system, has an impact on decreasing vehicle performance. This leakage causes the cooling water in the radiator to decrease and can trigger a high cooling system temperature (overheating) on the engine. The discussion of the effect of damage to the radiator cap on the engine temperature of the Toyota Kijang 5K is able to help improve the understanding of vehicle users in general about the cooling system, can treat and repair if there is damage to the radiator cap. The radiator cap test was carried out by observation on a 5K Toyota deer by testing the radiator cap pressure using a radiator cup tester and visualizing the radiator cap components. After inspection there is damage to the radiator cap seal and the results of the radiator cap test 0.6 kgf / cm2 which causes the radiator cap pressure to be low, while the standard pressure is 0.9 kgf / cm2 - 1.03 kgf / cm2 and there is damage to the radiator cap seal so that it can cause engine overheating. Repair steps by replacing the new radiator cap components, efforts that need to be considered to prevent losses due to damage to the cooling system components, check the level of coolant, do a daily check properly and correctly, do preventive maintenance regularly.

Abstract:
AbstractPre-stack seismic inversion, well log analysis approach and empirical relations were adopted in this study to better estimate geomechanical properties of Ruby field with minimum error. The use of conventional well log empirical method alone to evaluate geomechanical properties in oil/gas fields sometimes becomes problematic. Geomechanical properties were divided into: elastic moduli [Young’s modulus, shear modulus, bulk modulus and Poisson ratio (PR)] and rock mechanical strength properties (closure stress ratio (CSR), brittleness (BRI) and compressibility). Four geomechanical earth models (CSR, BRI, Young’s modulus and PR) were generated from the inversion analysis to understand the distribution of rock strength properties across the field. The results deciphered high Young’s, shear and bulk modulus in the reservoir zone compared to the cap/seal rocks and a decrease in PR. This implies that, the cap/seal are more ductile and less compressible than the reservoir rocks, indicating that the reservoirs are highly brittle. CSR result reveals high in cap/seal indicating that the cap/seal rock are harder to fracture and has a greater chance to withstand higher compressive stress before failing as opposed to reservoir rocks. The inverted earth model shows that, Young’s modulus and brittleness increase toward the northeastern part of the field, while CSR and PR increase toward the southwestern part of the field. These results suggest that harder, stiffer, highly compressible and easily fractured rocks are found in the northern and eastern part of the field as opposed to the southern to western part of the field that is ductile.

CO2 geological sequestration is one of the most promising methods for reducing anthropogenic CO2 emission into the atmosphere. To carry out the technology, it is necessary to evaluate the formation geological condition of storage area for the security and effectiveness. The CO2 reserve capability of formation is mostly connected with reservoir physical property. The CO2 storage security is mostly connected with seal quality of cap rock. This paper takes advantage of logging data material to comprehensively evaluate the seal condition and storage capability from the cap rock condition of the supercritical fluid and the reservoir capacity. It gives an evaluation instance of the slected area.

Abstract:
Seals are one of the main components of the petroleum system, yet their evaluation has received surprisingly little attention in terms of integrated risk assessment. This paper emphasises the need for an integrated multi-disciplinary approach for robust cap and fault seal evaluation so to minimise seal risk. The region of study is the Penola Trough, Otway Basin, where recent improvements in seismic quality, stratigraphic modelling and additional well control have greatly enhanced regional prospectivity. The Laira Formation has the lowest cap seal risk of Penola Trough strata based on empirical data. The Eumeralla Formation has a similar gamma ray log signature to the Laira Formation yet contains a higher frequency of sandy, relatively high permeability horizons. These horizons increase the likelihood of fault juxtaposition and the development of leaky windows that allow cross fault communication.Faults in the Penola Trough display fractal characteristics from seismic to core scale. A prediction of regional fault extension and deformation intensity below seismic resolution is viable since fault systems appear to be systematic. Extrapolation of fault populations to the millimetre scale shows good agreement with fault density recorded in core from a fault damage zone. Deformation intensities close to seismically resolvable faults are indicative of inner damage zone geometry where faults form linked cluster arrays. Microstructural fault analysis indicates the dominant fault processes in the Upper Crayfish Group are grain boundary sliding and cataclasis with gouge quartz cementation. Petrophysical analysis indicates these faults are able to support gas columns of up to 102 m.The relative probability of seal failure due to the development of effective structural permeability within the in-situ stress field indicates that planes at the greatest risk of failure are steeply dipping (>60°) and strike between 110°N and 200°N. Open fractures crosscutting pre-existing faults have been identified through microstructural examination and these may provide a mechanism for trap leakage and tertiary hydrocarbon migration. An integrated technique for mapping the relative risk of seal breach due to the development of effective structural permeability at the seismic scale is also presented.

Abstract:
Cap rock integrity is an essential characteristic of any reservoir to be used for long-term [Formula: see text] storage. Seismic AVOA (amplitude variation with offset and azimuth) techniques have been applied to map HTI anisotropy near the cap rock of the Weyburn field in southeast Saskatchewan, Canada, with the purpose of identifying potential fracture zones that may compromise seal integrity. This analysis, supported by modeling, observes the top of the regional seal (Watrous Formation) to have low levels of HTI anisotropy, whereas the reservoir cap rock (composite Midale Evaporite and Ratcliffe Beds) contains isolated areas of high intensity anisotropy, which may be fracture-related. Properties of the fracture fill and hydraulic conductivity within the inferred fracture zones are not constrained using this technique. The predominant orientations of the observed anisotropy are parallel and normal to the direction of maximum horizontal stress (northeast–southwest) and agree closely with previous fracture studies on core samples from the reservoir. Anisotropy anomalies are observed to correlate spatially with salt dissolution structures in the cap rock and overlying horizons as interpreted from 3D seismic cross sections.

Abstract:
The dependency on fossil fuels faces resource limitations and sustainability concerns. This situation requires new strategies for greenhouse gas emission management and the development of new sources of energy. This thesis explores fundamental concepts related to carbon geological storage, including CO2-CH4 replacement in hydrate-bearing sediments. In particular it addresses the following phenomena: - Interfacial tension and contact angle in CO2-water-mineral and CH4-water-mineral systems. These data are needed to upscale pore phenomena through the sediment porous network, to define multiphase flow characteristics in enhanced gas recovery operations, and to optimize the injection and storage CO2 in geological formations. - Coupled processes and potential geomechanical implications associated to CH4-CO2 replacement in hydrate bearing sediments. Results include physical monitoring data gathered for CH4 hydrate-bearing sediments during and after CO2 injection. - Performance of cap rocks as trapping structures for CO2 injection sites. This study focuses on clay-CO2-water systems and CO2 breakthrough through highly compacted fine-grained sediments. Long term experiments help evaluate different sediments according to their vulnerability to CO2, predict the likelihood and time-scale of breakthrough, and estimate consequent CO2 leaks.

Abstract:
To prevent the contents of a container from leakage the closure of the container mustbe sealed. Some kind of seal is used to prevent leakage. The sealing part of plastic caps is usually integrated in the design of the cap in form of lips or edges that areputting pressure against the bottle. The study refers to the integrated seal on a “push-on” cap that is made of Polypropylene copolymer. The cap is manufactured by Emballator Växjöplast AB and is called DLM (dropless medicine) since it is mounted to a glass or plastic bottle containing medicine in most cases. The bottom part of the cap is pressed onto the bottle permanently and the two-part design works through a separate top part that is screwed onto the bottom part. The study contains product development steps to create an updated design that manages the problems caused by the profile of the bottle. The study is laid out as a DRM-study that is trying to answer what is affecting a cap´s ability to seal and how the sealing elements can be designed to neutralize the shape of the bottle. The problems are appearing mostly when the cap is mounted to the glass bottle and is rotated, since the bottle in some cases has an oval profile. It is when the bottle is rotated that the seal is not adapting fast enough to become sealed again.Through the process of the study, it has been realized that it is better to place a second seal on top of the bottle instead of designing a seal that follows the shape of the container. This is done to reduce the risk of plastic deformation due to relaxation of the material. The surface at the top of the bottle is utilized, since it is an unoccupied space at both the cap and the bottle, to have the seals complete each other. This is done to be able to keep the current seal and just add a top-seal that is less sensitive for ovality of the bottle. The results of the study should be seen as a basis for production of prototypes and testing since it not possible to guarantee the capability of the design without continued testing.

Abstract:
Special operations are conducted more than ever in modern warfare. Since the 1980s they have developed and grown in numbers. But with more attempts of operations and bigger numbers, comes failures. One of these failures is operation Red Wings where a unit of US Navy SEALs attempted a recognisance and raid operation in the Hindu Kush. The purpose of this paper was to see how that failure could be analysed from an existing theory of Special operations. This was to ensure that other failures can be avoided but mainly to understand what really happened on that mountain in 2005. The method used was a case study of a single case to give an answer with quality and depth. The study found that Mcravens theory and principles of how to succeed a special operation were not applied during the operation. The case of operation Red Wings showed remarkable valour and motivation, but also lacked severely when it came to simplicity, surprise, and speed.

Mestrado em Gestão
This paper studies the importance of Portuguese financial sell-side analysts’ reports by testing reliability in firms’ Price Target calculation and information aptitude (deliver ability) in the content of sell-side analysts’ reports. The importance of sell-side analysts reports has long been studied, mainly in two different perspectives: the consequences of their work (market price reactions, trading strategies based in analysts’ recommendations) and the externalizations that influence their work (herding and bias behaviors). We believe that before either perspective can explain their value, analysts through their reports should be able to deliver the information users need and offer coherent calculation that justifies the Price Targets. We explore and encode the complete content of 73 reports from PSI20 listed companies, and apply consistency and reliability procedures to test them. Informativeness is tested against an ideal report (built mainly from the Jenkins Report conclusions). To test reliability in the Prices Targets calculations we investigate if the method and the parameters of the evaluation are clearly disclosed and if the calculative procedure is according to the theoretical conventions.

The second, a case study on Valhail well 2/8-8, which dealt with the geochemical evaluation of the caprock for leaked petroleum and the petrophysical characterization of the caprock. The result of the survey study indicate that thermogenic wet gas can serve as a reliable and diagnostic indicator of caprock leakage. High wet gas heights (i.e. ̲> lOOOm) were observed for fractured caprocks of high pore pressured reservoirs.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 168-180.
This thesis adopts an holistic approach to evaluation of the "seal problem", which encompasses the operational and biological interactions between the South African fur seal and fisheries in the Benguela Ecosystem. The operational interactions are examined using a qualitative assessment, and speculative, single-species simulation models are developed to improve understanding of seal population dynamics, present options for seal management and explore seal-fishery interactions. The models show that the probability of a seal living longer than 20 years is 14%; that the population has increased at a rate of 5.1 % p.a. since the last major census in 1983; that in 1988 there were an estimated 1.5 million seals that consumed over 2 million tons of fish; that although seal population size is usually estimated by multiplying the number of pups by a factor of 4, this factor is very variable and under different culling regimes is usually greater than 4; that historically, the mean population : pup ratio is 4.55. The most effective means of reducing the population is to cull both pups and bulls (the population decrease resulting mainly from reduced pup production caused by disturbance during bull culling). Culling pups is the least effective means of population control. Culling cows alters the population sex ratio drastically and is considered undesirable. To achieve a small or negative population growth rate, more bulls and pups need to be culled than have been taken historically. Each of the fisheries is found to be subject to operational interactions with seals, this being most severe for the purse-seine fishery. The per capita consumption of fish by seals is similar under any management regime so it is not justified to adopt a particular culling strategy to reduce overall consumption. When either seal predation or fishing mortality is reduced, the model simulates an increase in fishery yield of Cape hakes. But there is inadequate understanding of hake population dynamics at present, and depending on the interactions between species, decreased predation may result in increased or decreased fishery yields. This study shows that operational interactions are a real problem and this biases the opinion of fishermen towards seals as competitors for fish resources.

Abstract:
Piston cores from the continental slope of Spitsbergen were analysed using micropalaeontological, stable isotope and sedimentological techniques. The attempted to determine the palaeoceanographic history of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea, and the glacial history of the Spitsbergen ice cap over the last 200ka. The chronostratigraphy of the cores was determined using stable oxygen isotope analysis of planktic foraminifera. These records were correlated to a composite benthic foraminiferal δ18 O stratigraphy from the Norwegian Sea (Duplessy et al., 1988), as well as to other radiometrically dated records from the Norwegian-Greenland Sea to produce an age model. X-ray photographs were used to assess the ice rafted detrital (IRD) content of the cores, dropstones were counted from these x-rays. IRD content was used as a measure of calving rate from the outlet glaciers of the Spitsbergen ice cap. From these counts and the δ18O record a model of relative advance and retreat of the Spitsbergen ice cap was produced. It was found that moisture supply was the over riding factor controlling dropstone input to the Spitsbergen margin. Periods of high moisture supply led to rapid ice advance and hence high calving rate producing peaks in IRD. Peak IRD events were found during interstadial periods, such as substage 5c, as well as during glacial periods when ice was at the shelf edge, and during deglacial periods. Absolute abundance counts of foraminifera suggest glacial periods had a much higher productivity than interglacial periods. This strongly suggests the Spitsbergen margin was at least seasonally ice free during glacial periods. Melting events were recognised from the δ18O record of planktic and benthic foraminifera. The influx of North Atlantic surface waters during deglaciation has been identified from the δ18O record and the faunal assemblages. The initial influx of North Atlantic water during the last deglaciation took place at about 12.3ka, disappeared at 12ka, was present again from 10.5 to 10.3ka, and then from 10ka onwards.

Abstract:
AbstractMarine mammals include toothed and baleen whales, as well as seals, sea lions, sea cows, sea otters and polar bears. They are adapted to an aquatic life in oceanic, coastal and riverine habitats. They range in size from sea otters to blue whales. The extreme diversity of marine mammals is related to their adaptations to different habitats and their use of different feeding strategies. The different kinds of marine mammals are not closely related but evolved from different terrestrial ancestors. Because they have been exposed to similar environmental constraints in their aquatic way of life, many evolutionary convergences can be found in different lineages. They have torpedo-shaped bodies, thick fur or fat layers to preserve heat, as well as impressive diving abilities. Here, we discuss these adaptations in their physiology and anatomy. Through hands-on exercises, students can test how their own muscle strength and heartbeat are affected by cold water.

Abstract:
Abstract In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, theater and pageants played an especially powerful role in communicating the basic nature and functions of the fasces. In France, the emblem was familiar enough that after the storming of the Bastille in July 1789, the revolutionaries almost immediately chose the fasces as a symbol of their movement’s strength, power, commitment to justice, unity, and—with a conscientious nod to the tradition on the insignia in Rome’s Republic—dependence on the assent of the people. When combined with a Roman freedman’s cap, they meant for the fasces to connote liberty, too. In 1792, in a first for any nation, the fasces figured in the semi-official seal of the new revolutionary state. The spirit of revolutionary coin types with fasces had a certain influence in the Americas even beyond France’s colonies in the New World, finding a place on the money of Mexico (1823–1863), then Ecuador and Chile (after 1830). In North America, it was the distinctly non-Roman theme of the fasces representing unity that prevailed, facilitated by the Second Continental Congress’s decision in August 1776 to adopt e pluribus unum (Latin for “out of many, one”) as a national motto. Though the new nation’s official seal (adopted 1782) did not include the fasces, it soon featured prominently in the repertoire of patriotic images, including an official place in American political life when the House of Representatives in 1789 adopted a fasces-like mace to serve as the badge of its sergeant-at-arms.

Abstract:
Abstract Gas compressor customers desire to operate gas compressors at higher discharge temperatures. In barrel-style centrifugal compressors, dry gas seals are used to limit the leakage along the shaft from the process fluid to atmosphere. The temperature limit of dynamic O-ring seals in the dry gas seal cartridge is one of the primary limiters to operating gas compressors at higher discharge temperatures. While the present discharge temperature limit is conservative compared to the seal limits, without a detailed understanding of the thermal distribution around the discharge-side end cap, operation at compressor discharge temperatures that exceed seal limits has too much risk. Thus, this paper describes the approach taken to characterize the temperatures around the discharge end dry gas seal of a commercial C335EL centrifugal compressor. A phased test matrix with increasing discharge temperatures was conducted so that the temperature distribution throughout the end cap could be assessed. The full-scale, highly-instrumented compressor was operated at discharge pressures and temperatures ranging from 4.7 to 9.4 MPa (680 to 1370 psi) and 113 to 218 degree Celsius (235 to 425 degrees Fahrenheit), respectively. The experimental test set-up and results are presented herein. Results include demonstration of successful compressor operation at discharge temperatures greater than seal limits as well as the end cap temperature sensitivity to lube oil supply and dry gas supply temperatures.

Abstract:
The results from a project to investigate the design and optimisation of a metallic seal ring as part of an end cap for a 140 tonne pressure vessel are presented. A vessel loading condition of 4483 bar (65,000 psi) internal pressure was stipulated. The design of a metallic seal of 762 mm (30″) bore diameter provided a challenging task, due to the extremely high pressure application. A detailed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was carried out to evaluate a proposed seal and the initial conclusion was that it required complete re-design. In this work, analysis and interpretation were used to establish the modelling method for the seal. The FEA model that was developed for seal optimisation contained elasto-plastic material response, frictional contact modelling and advanced pressure field application. To maintain sealing contact pressure, the seal has to overcome differential radial deflections between the vessel and the end cap during pressure loading. The optimisation process developed a novel profiled seal contact that reduced contact stresses by 48%. This eliminated seat damage occurring during pressure loadings, whilst maintaining an adequate contact pressure ratio during a complete loading cycle. Structural deformations cause the seal contact point to shift, providing the opportunity for liquid to penetrate up to the contact point. Limitations were recognised within the FE software, which allowed unidirectional pressure penetration only. To overcome this limitation, a bespoke user subroutine was written to revise the contact algorithms within the Abaqus FE program. This enabled the model to capture ‘contact pressure zones’ to correctly progress by opening and (for the first time) close in response to seal and seat deflections.

Abstract:
Hermetic sealing is a stringent design constraint for contemporary MEMS devices such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, resonators, IR bolometers and RF devices. MEMS capping using glass frit seals is the most commonly used technique in practice. In this paper an investigation of glass frit sealed MEMS capping techniques in commercially-available inertial accelerometer sensors is reported. Destructive testing was the primary methodology used to characterize the accelerometer parts. X-ray analysis was used to identify the internal structure of the accelerometers. Microscopy and SEM analysis were then used to accurately measure the seal dimensions and the proportionate relationship with overall dimensions. EDX analysis of the glass frit was conducted to establish its composition. As a further investigative step, test samples were chemically decapped and analyzed. It was observed that four of the five samples maximized cap footprint area over the base silicon of the part. All samples featured glass frit voiding, and examples of both insufficient and excessive glass frit coverage were identified. The results of the investigation were compared for common themes: cap structure, glass frit seal, glass frit voiding and cap singulation techniques. This identified points of similarity in the industrial assembly processes. A clearer understanding of industry practice in accelerometer packaging was obtained particularly in cap structure; glass frit defects and glass frit composition.

Abstract:
In the past, Norwegian vessels have entered the Arctic for fishing and for hunting whales and seals. The seal hunters needed to go to the iceedge or into the ice to catch the seals and their activity created much needed income in the past. These seal hunters came mainly from the Aalesund area of Norway (many came from the village of Brandal) and from the Tromsø area in the north. Although seal hunting is controversial to day, there might be important learning to bring to new industries like the offshore oil and gas industry and to the navigators in ice infested northern waters. An activity within the research project “PetroArctic” at NTNU has focused on collecting experience data from the seal hunters, (Alme, 2009). A number of interviews with elders (age from 70 to 80+) have been conducted with focus on the physical environmental conditions, vessel behavior in ice and causes of loss of vessels. Among those interviewed were the legendary captain Paul Stark who sailed on sealers from 1950 to 2000 and who was involved in three vessel losses. Newspaper records from the early decades of the 20th century have been reviewed. Prior to the time of steel hull ships with diesel engines, wooden ships with sails and thereafter with steam engines were used. There were frequent losses caused by ice pressure and vessel implosions. Losses were also due to interaction with “ice foots” (Figure1) of multiyear ridges or due to hits from floating ridges on waves. The paper presents characteristic features of vessels used and ice conditions for the different areas where seal hunting took place. These were the Newfoundland area, Labrador coast, Danish Strait, the Area in vicinity of Jan Mayen, North East Greenland coast, Spitzbergen, Eastern Barents Sea towards Novaya Zemlya and the mouth of the White Sea (Figure 2). The causes for the losses or damages to vessels are reviewed in details. In this respect it should be noted that although the ice cap might be shrinking in the future, there will be ice parts of the year over large areas. The ice might even move faster than in the past and get to new areas that traditionally have been ice free. This also relate to the ice of the polar pack that might move more than in the past. There is therefore a strong encouragement to implement the learning of the Arctic pioneers.

Abstract:
The large MCM developed to package the main processor unit used in the IBM z9 Server makes use of a novel sealing design that imparts many desirable characteristics to the module assembly process, performance and reliability. These packages consist of a large ceramic chip carrier encapsulated using a copper cooling cap and a metal sealing ring. The sealing technique not only provides the hermetic environment needed to protect the non-underfilled devices contained within the module, but also allows for easy rework of the assembly. The seal used can withstand the thermally induced stresses and strains driven by the thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between the carrier and the cap. Depending on the system requirements or application, it can do this and reliably maintain the level of hermeticity needed to protect the encapsulated devices over a thousand or more thermal cycles. In addition to this, the seal and module design must compensate for mechanical tolerances of the carrier and devices that affect the assembled condition of the module. In the z-Server module design these considerations, as well as thermal performance factors, are all taken into account. This paper will cover the various aspects of the module design, focusing on the novel application of the hermetic seal employed. The seal will be described and its design parameters will be discussed. Seal, component and module level qualification testing that is performed to insure that the assembly meets the package reliability requirements will be presented.

"Bismuth Plugs Used to Cap All Wells During the Final Phase of the Valhall DP Abandonment Campaign, Offshore Norway." In Offshore Technology Conference. Full text
Abstract:
Abstract A premium bismuth-based alloy plug system has been developed to achieve a gas tight seal in annuli that cannot be achieved with traditional cement plugs, providing a new methodology for abandoning wells. To date, 35 plugs in total have been run in 30 wells, with this technique consented to by the offshore Norway regulator for Valhall conditions. No surface pumping equipment is needed for this type of plug. The alloy – when molten – has a viscosity like water, but a very high density. It can therefore flow through perforations or section milled windows, with gravity, into the annulus or into multiple annuli. When the alloy solidifies, it expands to create an impermeable seal. The entire process, from melting to solidification, takes place in a matter of minutes and the seal is ready to test within a few hours. The first at scale programme for abandonment applications has been done in the Valhall field offshore Norway. This was following an extensive plug and alloy development and qualification programme over a 4-year period, working in partnership with the local regulator from the outset. The testing programme demonstrated that the bismuth-based material is, in many ways, superior to cement. Following successful development of a system, a single well in Valhall was selected for a trial and tested for 2 years. Following success in the trial well, the operator extended the application to a total of 30 wells. Three different tool sizes were required for the campaign. Section milling of inner casings of 13-3/8", 18-5/8" and 20" had to be performed. Significantly shorter lengths for section milling were required as the bismuth plug – set inside the window – contributed to the efficacy of the system. All plugs were set by running on pipe. The tools run in these wells resulted in the world's largest bismuth alloy plug ever deployed with the largest tool (20"x30") weighing in at nearly 16,000 kg (34,000 lbs) and over 9,000 kg (20,000 lbs) of alloy. After the tools were melted downhole, the heater was extracted resulting in a solid bismuth alloy barrier across the wellbore. Extensive work was done to assess corrosion risk. Numerous tests were done according to industry standards and the bismuth-based plug substantially outperformed Inc 718 and 13Cr L80, thus a substantially longer lifetime is projected than had conventional materials been used. The authors believe that this technique can – when coupled with appropriate engineering work and in partnership with local regulators – be more widely applied, leading to simpler operations, lower costs and better long term well integrity.

Abstract:
Cracking on metal surface including Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) is a concern for nuclear power plant reactor system piping and components. Several repair techniques have been developed over the years that help address the cracking issues. In the United States, some crack remaining repair technologies such as Weld Overlay (WOL) technique have already been developed and also some technologies such as Excavate and Weld Repair (EWR) are still being actively discussed. Fitness-for-Service (FFS) codes in Japan also define some repair methods which allow repairing the components without removing the cracks. This paper introduces three repair methods which are described in the Fitness-for Service code in Japan, the WOL, the cap repair technique for Bottom Mounted Instrumentation (BMI) nozzles and seal welding. WOL is a repair method that maintains structural integrity by depositing Intergranular Stress Corrosion Cracking (IGSCC) resistant weld to the outer surface of cracked circumferential welded joints in primary piping made of austenitic stainless steel. The cap repair technique for BMI nozzles is a method of repairing from the outer surface when leakage due to SCC occurs. The cap develops a new boundary outside the BMI nozzle to prevent the leakage by retaining the leakage inside the cap. The seal welding technique is also a repair method to cover the cracks by welding to prevent propagation of the cracks and to prevent leakage of reactor water. Provided the cracks are adequately managed and evaluated, these crack remaining repair methods are very beneficial.

Abstract:
A frontal impact scenario was simulated using a Finite Element Model of a Hybrid III 50th percentile male (LSTC, Livermore CA) along with seatbelt, steering system and driver airbags. The boundary conditions included acceleration pulse to the seat and the outputs including injury measures in terms of Head Injury Criterion (HIC), Normalized Neck Injury Criterion (NIJ) and Chest Severity Index (CSI) were extracted from the simulations. The kinematics of the Hybrid III were validated against the kinematics of post mortem human surrogates (PMHS) available in the literature. Using the validated setup, metamodels were generated by creating a design of varying different parameters and recording the responses for each design. First, the X and Z translation of dummy along the seat is provided as input for which there was no variation in the head injury criterion (HIC). Next, the input pulse to the seat is parameterized along with the seatbelt loading and the results are obtained respectively. The outputs, in terms of injury measures, are generated in the form of metamodels as a function of the parameters. The occupant model used for the frontal crash scenario in LS-Dyna is validated against the previously available crash experimental data. A total of 100 design points was generated with a varying combination of parameters. An increase in various injury measures was observed with an increase in the scale factor of the acceleration pulse. Also, it was found that chest severity index increased with an increase in the scale factor of the seat belt loading force.

Abstract:
The I SEA project aimed at the development of a non-obtrusive, valid and replicable method to evaluate audience attitudes about science communication projects through an immersive virtual reality environment that can improve exhibitions while educating and empowering citizens. To achieve the objectives of this highly complex, highly interdisciplinary, and innovative project, a permanent articulation of the scientific approach with the technical and design development took place, aiming the construction of the non- invasive evaluation method. Because it is an intricate project, it required constant iterations and interactions among the team members. So, we’ve learned somehow to consider limitations as engines for developing the project, instead of seeing them as obstacles.
