Marriage, Reason and Sentiment in Honoré de Balzac and Cao Xueqin. The Case of Letters of Two Brides and Dream of the Red Chamber. In both Balzac’s (1799–1850) Letters of Two Brides (1845) and Cao’s (1715– 1763) Dream of the Red Chamber (1742–1764), we have two very determined young girls, ready for marriage, who dream of a more passionate life. Lacking family support, they are alone and adopt opposite behavior patterns. The first (Louise de Chaulieu / Lin Daiyu) stays the same and wants a marriage of love, while the second (Renée de Maucombe / Xue Baochai) resigns herself to a marriage of convenience arranged by her family. Their two destinies diverge: one experiences great love but dies prematurely; the other experiences family happiness but is a prisoner in a life of conventions. However, behind these oppositions, their differences appear superficial and seems to come only from the social and political context. The two destinies are ultimately closely related, until they almost merge. Not only does the stubbornness of the two heroines in the realization of their dream lead them to a similar situation, both authors have also come up with a very similar technique when exposing the same surprising result. In Balzac, the two heroines become “Siamese twins” thanks to the system of correspondence. In Cao’s case, it is thanks to a particular narrative technique that constantly relates both heroeines to each other. Finally, via their common reflections on the influence of “bad novels” on young girls, Balzac and Cao deliver us “a novel about novels”. The novel is a language vessel, and at the same time a metalanguage that reflects on the linguistic structure of the work.

À travers une relecture psychanalytique du roman chinois Le Rêve dans le pavillon rouge, je voudrais articuler la fonction du regard, représenté dans le roman par le jade transcendant, avec les différentes manifestations de l'amour dans son changement : depuis sa prédisposition, jusqu'à son anéantissement, en passant par son commencement et sa reconstitution, transformation pendant laquelle le regard joue successivement le rôle de montreur, déclencheur, révélateur et destructeur. Par le terme de regard, je désigne ce en quoi et autour de quoi l'organisation pulsionnelle est structurée : il satisfait simultanément les visées d'Éros et celles de Thanatos et rend possible leur développement dans une intrication pulsionnelle précaire qui est toujours au bord de la désintrication. De ce fait, l'amour évolue et se doit d'évoluer, au cours duquel le sujet est confronté à la dialectique entre le semblable et le différent, entre le constructif et le destructif, à l'endroit exact où la vie rencontre la mort<br>Through a psychoanalytic reading of the chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber, i iould like to articulate the function of the look, represented in the novel by the transcendent jade, with the various manifestations of love in its evolution : from its predisposition to annihilation, going through its beginning and reconstitution, during which the look acts successively as an exhibitor, a trigger, a revealer and a destroyer. L’objectif de cette thèse est de comparer le rapport que deux cultures (Chine /France) entretiennent avec le plaisir gustatif, à travers l’histoire de leurs pratiques alimentaires, la philosophie qui les supporte et les représentations qui en sont données dans la littérature. Cette confrontation culturelle s’appuiera particulièrement sur les scènes de table présentes dans un roman chinois de la fin du XVIIIe siècle (Cao Xuequin) et plusieurs romans français du début du XIXe siècle (Balzac). L’approche comparatiste nous permet d’envisager notre objet à travers un cadre conceptuel commun (« le vide et le plein ») et de voir comment il construit des pratiques et des représentations sociales, un imaginaire personnel à l’auteur, des pratiques d’écriture et finalement l’esprit d’une époque. Le plaisir de la table nous conduit des mets aux mots, et de la satisfaction gustative aux valeurs esthétiques de deux civilisations et deux cultures dont nous marquerons les divergences et dont nous soulignerons les harmonies<br>The objective of this thesis is to compare the relationship that two cultures (China / France) have with pleasure of taste, through the history of their eating practices, the philosophy that supports them and the representations that are given in the literature. This cultural confrontation will be particularly based on the table scenes present in a Chinese novel from the end of the 18th century (Cao Xuequin) and several French novels from the beginning of the 19th century (Balzac). The comparative approach allows us to consider our object through a common conceptual framework (“deficiency and excess”) and to see how it constructs social practices and representations, a personal imagination for the author, practices of writing and finally the spirit of an era. The pleasure of the table leads us from the dishes to the words, and from the gustatory satisfaction to the aesthetic values ​​of two civilizations and two cultures whose divergences we will mark and whose harmonies we will underline

En examinant les points communs par les outils structuraliste, stylistique, sémiotique et thématique, la présente étude a pour but de trouver les points communs entre les deux modèles romanesques chinois et français : Le Rêve dans le pavillon rouge de Cao Xueqin et A La Recherche du temps perdu de Marcel Proust. La narration, le système des personnages et la temporalité sont similaires dans ces deux œuvres. Dans la Première Partie, nous allons montrer que ces deux œuvres adoptent, en effet, une forme circulaire, se refermant sur elle-même, analogique à la forme de la métaphore mais qui s’étend jusqu’à tout le texte, que nous appelons « la métaphorisation ». La métaphorisation, sur ces trois aspects, est le point de départ d’une nouvelle esthétique, propre, mais commune, à ces deux œuvres. Dans la Deuxième Partie, nous allons montrer que la formation d’un monde romanesque auto-référentiel dans l’intérieur des deux œuvres est rendu possible grâce à la métaphorisation, et les trois catégories des signes romanesques - le Signifiant, le Signifié et le Référent – ont la possibilité de puiser leur source uniquement à l’intérieur du roman. Nous allons également montrer le fantastique de la narration des deux œuvres, sous l’apparence réaliste des deux récits de « Marcel » et de « Jia Jade magique ». La création de nouvelles perspectives esthétiques, l’interrogation sur l’essentiel de la littérature, par la découverte de la forme métaphorisée de ces deux œuvres, constituent une partie importante de la présente thèse. En mettant en convergence ces deux œuvres par leur similarité, nous souhaitons apporter des découvertes intéressantes d’un point de vue comparatiste<br>By examining the commonalities by structural, stylistic and semiotic tools, and by themes, this study aims to find the commonalities between the two Chinese and French novels: Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin and Remembrance of Things Past by Marcel Proust. Based on our analysis in Part I, a specific form on three aspects - the narration, the system of characters and the temporality - is found to be common in both works. It is of a circular shape, closing in on itself, analogue to a metaphor but extends to all the text, which we call "the metaphorization." The metaphorization on these three aspects will be the center of a new aesthetic, proper but common to both works. In Part II, we will show that metaphorzation makes possible the formation of a self-referential world in the interior of the two works, and the three categories of signs inside a fiction - the Signifier, the Signified and the Referent - will have the opportunity to draw their source only in the interior of the novel. We are going to investigate into the fantastic that lies under the appearance of realism in the narration of the two stories of “Marcel” and “Jia Jade magique.” The metaphorization is not only an important part of our theory, it helps to discuss on the very essence of the literature in this present study. By converging these two novels by their similarity, we wish to make interesting discoveries from a comparative point of view
