Abstract:
Recent disruption to the art market has dismantled traditional barriers to entry for new artists and created opportunities for them to reach audiences and develop micro businesses from their practice. However, the majority of Australian artists are untrained in creating profitable business models from their art practice. In order for artists to identify potential opportunities they must rethink their current business strategies and resultant business model. This research project provides a practical tool for use in the business model innovation process by refining Osterwalder and Pigneur’s Business Model Canvas specifically for visual arts practitioners.

Abstract:
The title of the work, Beneath a Canvas of Green, is in reference to the many walks I used to take during the summers while growing up in northern Minnesota. I love the way the sunlight shines through the leaves--especially when there is a bit of wind to make the light dance and flicker. I am also fascinated by the way in which the many things I pass by in life on a regular basis can appear so differently, depending on the time of day, season of the year, or mood I am in at the time. These thoughts were at the forefront as I composed Beneath a Canvas of Green. From the rush of sounds that open and close the piece, to its calm and delicate interior, the work utilizes a singular melodic idea viewed through a variety of different lenses.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Dolinsky, Margaret. "Facing experience : a painter's canvas in virtual reality." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3204.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates how shifts in perception might be brought about through the development of visual imagery created by the use of virtual environment technology. Through a discussion of historical uses of immersion in art, this thesis will explore how immersion functions and why immersion has been a goal for artists throughout history. It begins with a discussion of ancient cave drawings and the relevance of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. Next it examines the biological origins of “making special.” The research will discuss how this concept, combined with the ideas of “action” and “reaction,” has reinforced the view that art is fundamentally experiential rather than static. The research emphasizes how present-day virtual environment art, in providing a space that engages visitors in computer graphics, expands on previous immersive artistic practices. The thesis examines the technical context in which the research occurs by briefly describing the use of computer science technologies, the fundamentals of visual arts practices, and the importance of aesthetics in new media and provides a description of my artistic practice. The aim is to investigate how combining these approaches can enhance virtual environments as artworks. The computer science of virtual environments includes both hardware and software programming. The resultant virtual environment experiences are technologically dependent on the types of visual displays being used, including screens and monitors, and their subsequent viewing affordances. Virtual environments fill the field of view and can be experienced with a head mounted display (HMD) or a large screen display. The sense of immersion gained through the experience depends on how tracking devices and related peripheral devices are used to facilitate interaction. The thesis discusses visual arts practices with a focus on how illusions shift our cognition and perception in the visual modalities. This discussion includes how perceptual thinking is the foundation of art experiences, how analogies are the foundation of cognitive experiences and how the two intertwine in art experiences for virtual environments. An examination of the aesthetic strategies used by artists and new media critics are presented to discuss new media art. This thesis investigates the visual elements used in virtual environments and prescribes strategies for creating art for virtual environments. Methods constituting a unique virtual environment practice that focuses on visual analogies are discussed. The artistic practice that is discussed as the basis for this research also concentrates on experiential moments and shifts in perception and cognition and references Douglas Hofstadter, Rudolf Arnheim and John Dewey. iv Virtual environments provide for experiences in which the imagery generated updates in real time. Following an analysis of existing artwork and critical writing relative to the field, the process of inquiry has required the creation of artworks that involve tracking systems, projection displays, sound work, and an understanding of the importance of the visitor. In practice, the research has shown that the visitor should be seen as an interlocutor, interacting from a first-person perspective with virtual environment events, where avatars or other instrumental intermediaries, such as guns, vehicles, or menu systems, do not to occlude the view. The aesthetic outcomes of this research are the result of combining visual analogies, real time interactive animation, and operatic performance in immersive space. The environments designed in this research were informed initially by paintings created with imagery generated in a hypnopompic state or during the moments of transitioning from sleeping to waking. The drawings often emphasize emotional moments as caricatures and/or elements of the face as seen from a number of perspectives simultaneously, in the way of some cartoons, primitive artwork or Cubist imagery. In the imagery, the faces indicate situations, emotions and confrontations which can offer moments of humour and reflective exploration. At times, the faces usurp the space and stand in representation as both face and figure. The power of the placement of the caricatures in the paintings become apparent as the imagery stages the expressive moment. The placement of faces sets the scene, establishes relationships and promotes the honesty and emotions that develop over time as the paintings are scrutinized. The development process of creating virtual environment imagery starts with hand drawn sketches of characters, develops further as paintings on “digital canvas”, are built as animated, three-dimensional models and finally incorporated into a virtual environment. The imagery is generated while drawing, typically with paper and pencil, in a stream of consciousness during the hypnopompic state. This method became an aesthetic strategy for producing a snappy straightforward sketch. The sketches are explored further as they are worked up as paintings. During the painting process, the figures become fleshed out and their placement on the page, in essence brings them to life. These characters inhabit a world that I explore even further by building them into three dimensional models and placing them in computer generated virtual environments. The methodology of developing and placing the faces/figures became an operational strategy for building virtual environments. In order to open up the range of art virtual environments, and develop operational strategies for visitors’ experience, the characters and their facial features are used as navigational strategies, signposts and methods of wayfinding in order to sustain a stream of consciousness type of navigation. Faces and characters were designed to represent those intimate moments of self-reflection and confrontation that occur daily within ourselves and with others. They sought to reflect moments of wonderment, hurt, curiosity and humour that could subsequently be relinquished for more practical or purposeful endeavours. They were intended to create conditions in which visitors might reflect upon their emotional state, v enabling their understanding and trust of their personal space, in which decisions are made and the nature of world is determined. In order to extend the split-second, frozen moment of recognition that a painting affords, the caricatures and their scenes are given new dimensions as they become characters in a performative virtual reality. Emotables, distinct from avatars, are characters confronting visitors in the virtual environment to engage them in an interactive, stream of consciousness, non-linear dialogue. Visitors are also situated with a role in a virtual world, where they were required to adapt to the language of the environment in order to progress through the dynamics of a drama. The research showed that imagery created in a context of whimsy and fantasy could bring ontological meaning and aesthetic experience into the interactive environment, such that emotables or facially expressive computer graphic characters could be seen as another brushstroke in painting a world of virtual reality.

Several sites collect information about users/devices, when they are accessed or even while browsing, often without consent. Among the several techniques, one that is in focus in this work uses the Canvas Fingerprinting method to generate a unique identification of the user/device, through the collection of some information and making some processing available through the HTML5 language. In this way, the user/device can be identified in the next accesses and even information about him/it can be recovered if previously collected. Thereby, the research was developed with the intention of approaching a way to identify and warn the user, who accesses a certain site, if the site is making his identification using the method of Canvas Fingerprinting. In this search, the study identified the existence of a Firefox extension called Canvas Blocker that identifies and blocks the use of the HTML5 Canvas mechanism. Because of the existence of this extension, the work modified it to detect the specific use of Canvas Fingerprinting mechanism and to alert the user about this use. For this, a methodology already present in the literature was used to detect Canvas Fingerprinting and added some suggestions to reduce the false negatives and the false positives found during the experiments. Then, the proposed algorithm was applied in a given set of sites, some data were collected from these visits, later these data were analyzed and, finally, measurements were presented that proved the efficiency of the presented solution.

Abstract:
[EN] Although facing is widely used for multiple purposes, there is still little information about it. At first glance, facing seems to be an almost neutral and simple intervention. Its application, however, entails complex consequences including changes to a painting's strata, and it can have potential repercussions on the conservation of the paint itself. In most cases, it would be better to recur to alternative and less intrusive methods, but sometimes the use of facing is strictly necessary. For this reason, during this PhD a research protocol addressed the design of remoistenable temporary supports (RTS) for the facing of canvas paintings, an alternative method that enables a higher control of the adhesive penetration into the substrate, and thus the easier removal of residues. Great attention was given in this assessment to the needs of restorers, in terms of not only availability and the cost-effectiveness of materials, but also for the concerns of the safety of the operator as well as the environment. In the first section of this dissertation, a historical review is made starting from the first indirect sources of the 18th century up to the present day. Then facing's adhesive and penetrative mechanisms are analysed, focusing on conservative issues related to the used materials and application methodologies. The second section describes the assessment of the innovative RTS methodology, tested according to a meticulous research project adapting advanced analytical technologies to the specific needs. During the first experimental stage, chemical, physical and mechanical analyses of the different classes of materials (adhesives and temporary supports) and their compatibility for the preparation of remoistenable tissues were carried out. The second step of the investigation focused on the evaluation of the application of remoistenable temporary supports on mock-ups reproducing a canvas painting, in order to test those considered the most relevant factors. Observations with optical microscope in visible and ultraviolet (UV) light and analyses with fieldemission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were carried out to evaluate the permanence of residues and the assessment of the possible modifications that may have occurred on the painted surface. Micro-Raman spectroscopy associated with a high-resolution microscope was used to determine the penetration of the adhesive into the cracks of the mock-ups. Finally, peeling tests at different environmental conditions were carried out to assess the adhesion strength of the selected RTS.

Abstract:
Development in the field of software architecture, from the early days in the mid-80’s, has been significant. From purely technical descriptions to decision based architectural knowledge, software architecture has seen fundamental changes to its methodologies and techniques. Architectural knowledge is a resource that is managed and stored by companies, this resource is valuable because it can be reused and analysed to improve future development. Companies today are interested in the reasoning behind the software architecture. This reasoning is mainly formulated through the architectural decisions made during development. For architectural decisions to be easier to analyse they need to be stored in a way that enables use of common analytical tools so that comparisons between decisions are consistent and relevant. Additionally, it is also important to have enough data, which leads us to the problem that, preferably, all the individual architectural knowledge cases must be structured and stored. To do this we present a tool that uses graph generation algorithms to generate architectural knowledge as graphs based on an architectural decision canvas called GRADE. This enables multiple decision cases to be encoded through graphs that can be used to analyse relationships and balances between different architectural knowledge elements represented through nodes and edges within a graph.

The entrepreneurship phenomenon has become one of the most widespread concepts in the XXI century. It is known the increasing use of this term and the number of people who choose to be entrepreneurs for their future. Lean methodologies, more specifically the Lean Startup, have become popular approaches for many startups and even stable companies, in opposition to some traditional theories. The Lean Startup methodology focuses on an efficient development in order to reach the target and the market as soon as possible, through processes of experimentation rather than a meticulous planning. This MFT presents a project's creation using the Lean tools in order to analyse the sustainability in launching the project in the market. Distinguished from a business plan, this TFM uses tools like Lean Canvas, market, industry and financial analysis.

Abstract:
'Scribing place' Is a qualitative study set In one prison for eighteen months, and one probation hostel for one month that responds to three core questions about how and where. why and with what effect male prisoners write, mark, scratch and texture carceral and semi-carceral space. This research was born from an Interest in prisoners' writings as activities that mediate the soda-cultural interrelationships and spaces of a prison community commonly considered illiterate. However. this Is not the kind of writing that passes exams or gets published as novels or short stories, but the tags, messages, notes, letters and body marks that characterise and mediate the 'of course' aspect of our social landscapes. These are the writings that are often ignored, or at least dismissed as sociocultural footnotes, rather than material for 'main text' interpretation. This work draws from ethnographic methodologies such as participant observation and conversations, while developing a more novel form of focussed workshop, in order to engage in an Intersubjectlve dialogue with prisoners. Having developed a geo-sociolinguistic framework this research explores prisoners' writings through posing and responding to questions about the relationship between writing/texts, people and space. The findings were that the prison Is subject to a series of textured transformations that create two forms of change• firstly, the transformation of unsafe carceral space Into various pockets of safe place, and secondly, numerous changes . some successful, other not - to a prisoner's sense of self. The hostel was found to be a deeply liminal, anti-place where. In order to secure release, prisoners struggled to comply with the demands of 'residency', in particular constant threshold crossing between the seml-carceral (hostel) and the freedom of the outside world.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Despite numerous recent advances in the field of deep learning for artistic purposes, the integration of these state-of-the-art machine learning tools into applications for drawing and visual expression has been an underexplored field. Bridging this gap has the potential to empower a large subset of the population, from children to the elderly, with a new medium to represent and visualize their ideas. Paper Dreams is a web-based canvas for sketching and storyboarding, with a multimodal user interface integrated with a variety of machine learning models. By using sketch recognition, style transfer, and natural language processing, the system can contextualize what the user is drawing; it then can color the sketch appropriately, suggest related objects for the user to draw, and allow the user to pull from a database of related images to add onto the canvas. Furthermore, the user can influence the output of the models via a serendipity dial that affects how "wacky" the system's outputs are. By processing a variety of multimodal inputs and automating artistic processes, Paper Dreams becomes an efficient tool for quickly generating vibrant and complex artistic scenes.

With the burst and spread of new entrepreneurial projects all over the world comes the need to rethink the methodologies responsible for the development of this kind of business. The Lean Startup philosophy appears as a movement dedicated to the understanding and support of innovative projects that work under a high influence of risk with the purpose of limiting it as well as answering to the limitations that these kind of organizations usually face. This thesis studies the life of a project and team since the stage of the idea conception until the product launching moment, describing each step of the process and exploring the Lean Startup tools that allowed a fast analysis of the clients' needs, a precise evaluation on the quality of the solution, an external environment analysis and the conception of a viable financial strategy. This thesis is focused on the main tools, essential for any Lean project such as: The Business Model Canvas, the Validation Board, the Value Proposition Canvas and the Blue Ocean Canvas, showcasing this model a a viable alternative for the traditional and exhaustive business plan, defending a fast but not perfect marker entry, under the vision of the statement: Fail fast, succeed faster. The need for constant renewal organizations undertake to remain at the forefront of the dynamic demands of the market and society as well as the indispensable quest for expansion and business development have required practical approaches to foster creativity and to enable change, given that established processes to manage such objectives are not easily identified. By doing so, this organizational model facilitates the re-assessment the scope and proposal of each organization as a pathway to reinvention. Among numerous approaches, the Canvas method has been utilized by organizations with different sizes and backgrounds. It is presented as a model of renowned efficiency as it proposes not only structure but also a means to foment creative thinking, collaborative work, and the organization and its relationships as a whole. This study is aimed at the examination of the use of the Canvas methodology in promoting organizational planning and development within a managerial group focused on the service industry, food and trade. It takes into consideration concepts drawn from the literature regarding the perception of business professionals about the Canvas method and its application in aforementioned organizational context. This qualitative research study relied on observation and descriptive narrative and data derived from the review of documents and from interviews of managers and the consultant involved in the implementation of the methodology. The conclusion reveals that the implementation of the Canvas was successful as it made use of the original proposal developed by Professor Alexander Osterwalder. It also reveals that the successful implementation is the result of the strong entrepreneurship culture of the managers, of the advanced level of organizational maturity, of the favorable conjuncture, and of the approach with which the managers absorbed the methodology as a mental model.

Abstract:
We propose the Animation Canvas, a system for working with character animation. The canvas is an interactive two-dimensional environment similar to a sketch editor. Abstract interaction modes and controls are provided to support editing tasks. Consistent motion-as-curve and pose-as-point metaphors unify different features of the system. The metaphors and interactive elements of the system define a visual language allowing users to explore, manipulate, and create motions. The canvas also serves as a framework for presenting interactive motion editing techniques. We have developed two techniques in order to explore possibilities for motion editing while demonstrating the flexibility of the system. The first technique is a method for interacting with motion graphs in order to explore motion connectivity and construct new blended motions from shorter clips. The second is a real-time spatial interpolation system that enables users to construct new motions or control an animated character.

Full text
Abstract:
In the contemporary art-historical vision, Mikhail Larionov is renowned as the author and the main figure in the polemical discourse of Neoprimitivism and the inventor of the Rayonism style. These aspects, although crucial to his career, are far from exhausting the artist’s legacy. During his most industrious period, from 1910 to 1915, he was equally, if not more, engaged in the development of new forms of art than in the practice of painting; in fact, the conventional cornerstone of the high art in the era of Modernism – a painting – lost its central position and receded to the status of the peripheral phenomenon in his artistic practice. When considering his position as a central figure in the events of the 1910-1915 in Russia, Larionov’s ambivalence as an artist implies hesitation about the picture of gestalt homogeneity of Modernist discourse (with a painting as the hierarchical apex of high art in the Modernist era) in Russia of the early decades of the twentieth century. While historical evaluation privileges the painting over the non-painting practice of the artist, there is sufficient evidence testifying to the need to consider them as equal and synergetic.

Fingerprinting is a technique applied in order to identify or re-identify a User/ device via a set of attributes such as the size of the device’s screen, IP address identification, the versions of the software installed as well as through other existing features in the process Web communication. The technique is known in Nomenclature website fingerprinting and it has been used as a mechanism for marketing/product sales, however, its development aims to serve as a measure security of user authentication. The question is As it is considered a potencial threat to Web privacy, since personal and sensitive data can be captured and used for malicious purposes in various types of attacks and fraud. The point is that it may and should be considered a potential threat to the privacy of users on the Web, since personal and sensitive data can be captured and used for malicious purposes. Currently a technique that uses image rendering, called Canvas fingerprinting, has also been used for the same purposes as the previous one. This work presents a method that uses information retrieval techniques (via vectorial method) to perform the detection of Canvas Fingerprinting scripts in Web pages. The method consists in calculating the similarity between a base with 100 queries from a Canvas Fingerprinting database and a set of web pages labeled as benign and malignant. The result found showed high levels of similarities with a canvas base (97 %), a base of phishing pages (87 %) and a base with DMOZ directory pages (87 %).

Abstract:

Abstract:
As the era of digitalization dawns, the need to integrate separate silos into a synchronized connected system is becoming of ever greater significance. This thesis focuses on the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) and the Digitala vetenskapliga arkive (DiVA) as examples of separate silos. The thesis presents several methods of automating document handling associated with a degree project. It exploits the fact that students will submit their thesis to their examiner via Canvas. Canvas is the LMS platform used by students to submit all their coursework. When the examiner approves the thesis, it will be archived in DiVA and optionally published on DiVA. DiVA is an institutional repository used for research publications and student theses. When manually archiving and publishing student theses on DiVA several fields need to be filled in. These fields provide meta data for the thesis itself. The content of these fields (author, title, keywords, abstract, …) can be used when searching via the DiVA portal. It might not seem like a massive task to enter this meta data for an individual thesis; however, given the number of theses that are submitted every year, this process takes a large amount of time and effort. Moreover, it is important to enter this data correctly, which is difficult when manually doing this task. Therefore, this thesis project seeks to automate this process for future theses. The proposed solution parses PDF documents and uses information from the LMS in order to automatically generate a cover for the thesis and fill in the required DiVA meta data. Additionally, information for inserting an announcement of the student's oral thesis presentation into a calendar system will be provided. Moreover, the data in each case will be checked for correctness and consistency. Manually filling in DiVA fields in order to publish theses has been a quite demanding and time-consuming process. Thus, there is often a delay before a thesis is published on DiVA. Therefore, this thesis project’s goal is to provide KTH with an automated means to handle thesis archiving and publication on DiVA, while doing so more efficiently, and with fewer errors. The correctness of the extracted meta data will be evaluated by comparing the results to the previously entered meta data for theses that have previously been achieved in DiVA. The automated process has been calculated to take roughly 50 seconds to prepare the information needed to publish a thesis to DiVA with ~71% accuracy, compared with 1 hour and 34% accuracy in the previous manual method.

Abstract:
In this bachelor thesis we will examine how projection mapping (projection on a surface) can be used as a spatial experience. From our own interpretation of calm technology’s principles, will we create a design perspective that could keep the design calm with respect to the technology, and not be a disturbing moment for the viewer. To guide us through this we have taken Keri Smith’s methods to explore and experiment the environment and different materials. To expand the creativity to find new possibilities in projection mapping, we have used methods like brainstorming, moodboards and sketches. To help our process we based our project on Stolterman and Löwgren’s view of the design process. This led to a result of three figurations where all of them are inspired by the atmosphere of our nature. Through this project we have reached that there’s a lot of ways you can narrate with spaces, it doesn't need to be a physical room where you can stand in. Spaces can transform by manipulating physical artifacts. By adding an extra layer onto these artifacts like an animation it can amplify it’s meaning or give it a new character. Only with simple means like different patterns, colors and light.
