Squarcini, Federico, ed. Boundaries, Dynamics and Construction of Traditions in South Asia. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/88-8453-261-2.

Full text
Abstract:
This collection of essays is meant to explore the various forms that the theme and the notion of "tradition2 took within the South Asian context, during ancient and pre-colonial periods. Designed by the editor to cover a significant selection of the specialized fields of knowledge that shaped classical South Asian intellectual history, the aim of this volume is to offer a stimulating anthology of papers on the different and complex processes employed during the "invention", construction, preservation and renewal of a given tradition. In this regard, the contributors have expertly analysed a large variety of aspects, namely the transmission of traditional canons "both textual and practical", the dynamisms and the strategies chosen for the renewal of a tradition, its internal and external dialectics, the procedures of its legitimation, the theoretical and pragmatic mechanisms of its survival, the tensions and the criticisms of traditional knowledge systems, etc. Attention has also been paid to problems related to the primacy exercised by highly specialized traditional experts, to monopolies in the transmission of knowledge, to its means of cultural and political justification, and to the connections between a specific traditional field of knowledge and the surrounding social arena.

Cushman, Samuel A., and Tzeidle N. Wasserman. Quantifying loss and degradation of former American marten habitat due to the impacts of forestry operations and associated road networks in northern Idaho, USA. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198759805.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
American marten are associated with extensive and unfragmented late seral forest habitats, and are often considered to be particularly vulnerable to habitat loss and fragmentation. This chapter evaluates the impact of road building and timber harvest on habitat suitability for marten in northern Idaho, USA, using an empirically derived, multi-scale habitat suitability model, reconstructing key predictor variables (elevation, forest type, road density, canopy cover, landscape fragmentation and the extensiveness of late seral forest in the landscape) as they appear to have existed prior to harvest, and applying the model to both current and pre-harvest conditions. Calculating changes in the extent and pattern of habitat in the landscape indicate that timber harvest and road construction together reduced marten habitat quality considerably across the study area, which is likely responsible for current patterns of reduced detection rates and lower genetic diversity in areas that have experienced the largest amounts of habitat loss.

Shoemaker, Karl. Medieval Canon Law. Edited by Markus D. Dubber and Christopher Tomlins. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198794356.013.36.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers the historical development of medieval canon law. The term ‘canon law’ refers to the body of law developed by the Catholic Church to govern the body of Christ on earth. In time, canon law came to designate the totality of laws, legislation, judicial processes, and institutions promulgated by the Church and enforced by its officers upon Christians, and sometimes non-Christians. This chapter covers the successes of canonists in consolidating their text base and laying the ground for an increasing professionalization of their discipline; the professional competition between canonists and theologians, which emerged in part out of a divide between those who understood the Church as a pastoral institution and those that understood it as a rigorously hierarchical administrative entity; and the emergence of new legal practices.

Kelly, Alice M. Decolonising the Conrad Canon. Liverpool University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781800856462.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In the context of decolonisation movements across Higher Education in the UK and around the world, this book shows that decolonial, queer, feminist readings are possible in even the deepest corners of the colonial literary canon. Decolonising the Conrad Canon turns to Joseph Conrad’s lesser-known works in search of textual breathing spaces, in which female characters of colour speak, think, gaze, and yearn, and follows them off the page into their transmedia afterlives. Through this intervention, the book challenges the ubiquitous recirculation of white male voices as uniquely endowed to speak the history of Empire and turns instead to the many powerful indigenous women that live forgotten in the Conrad archive and the myriad adaptations housed within it. Presenting Immada and Edith’s queer desires in The Rescue and its periodical illustrations, Aïssa’s anti-colonial resistance in An Outcast of the Islands and her characterisation on its pulp book covers, the feminist relationships of Almayer’s Folly and Nina Almayer’s embodiment in Chantal Akerman’s adaptation La Folie Almayer, this book argues that Conrad’s female characters of colour deserve to be read as viable, meaning-making protagonists who matter. Decolonising the Conrad Canon interrogates race, gender, and character status in literary scholarship to propose alternative methods for teaching, reading, and studying not just Joseph Conrad but all those seemingly immovable author-Gods like him.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter provides an overview of the book's study. This volume covers the novel in English in countries other than Britain and the United States over four and a half centuries. At the centre of this period is the British Empire, not merely in its political and territorial manifestations, but as a literary empire, processing and reconfiguring the English literary canon through the medium of the English language. The period encompasses satire, fantasy, migration narratives, the literature of dispersal and return, of the growth of empire, and of its lapse, that brings new modes of literary affiliation. Moreover, it sees, throughout the empire, the establishment of new communities of writers and readers, publishers, and booksellers.

Lieu, Judith M., and Martinus C. de Boer, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Johannine Studies. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198739982.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Johannine Studies offers a comprehensive introduction to and discussion of contemporary study of the Gospel and Letters of John. The 24 chapters, all written by leading specialists in the field, cover the text and literary sources of the Johannine literature; its historical origins and context; and its conceptual background in Greek and Jewish thought, as well as its relationship to and reception among the Gnostics. Separate chapters discuss recent approaches to the Gospel and Letters from narrative, gender-related, ideological, and sociological perspectives, as well as their use of symbolism. The major Johannine theological themes are all discussed, including the role of ‘the Jews’, the attitude to Scripture and law, dualism, eschatology, the person and purpose of Jesus, the experience of eternal life and the Spirit, and ethics. The place of the Johannine literature in the church’s canon and the emergence of a commentary tradition close the volume. Each chapter gives a balanced overview of scholarly debate, while also offering a clearly presented response from the perspective of the author.

Earnshaw, Steven. The existential drinker. Manchester University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.7228/manchester/9780719099618.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Drinking to excess has been a striking problem for industrial and post-industrial societies – who is responsible when a ‘free’ individual opts for a slow suicide? The causes of such drinking have often been blamed on heredity, moral weakness, ‘disease’ (addiction), hedonism, and Romantic illusion. Yet there is another reason which may be more fundamental and which has been overlooked or dismissed, and it is that the drinker may act with sincere philosophical intent. The Existential drinker looks at the convergence of a new kind of excessive, habitual drinking, beginning in the nineteenth century, and a new way of thinking about the self which in the twentieth century comes to be labelled ‘Existential’. A substantial introduction covers questions of self, will, consciousness, authenticity and ethics in relation to drinking, while introducing aspects of Existential thought pertinent to the discussion. The Existential-drinker canon is anchored in Jack London’s ‘alcoholic memoir’ John Barleycorn (1913) where London claims he can get at the truth of existence only through the insights afforded by excessive and repeated alcohol use. The book then covers drinker-texts such as Jean Rhys’s interwar novels, Malcolm Lowry’s Under the volcano, Charles Jackson’s The lost weekend and John O’Brien’s Leaving Las Vegas, along with less well-known works such as Frederick Exley’s A fan’s notes, Venedikt Yerofeev’s Moscow-Petushki, and A. L. Kennedy’s Paradise. The book will appeal to anybody with an interest in drinking and literature, as well as those with more specialised concerns in drinking studies, Existentialism, twentieth-century literature, and medical humanities.

Abstract:
The International Studies Association’s (ISA) Scientific Study of International Processes (SSIP) section is dedicated to the systematic analysis of empirical data covering the entire range of international political questions. Drawing on the canons of scientific inquiry, SSIP seeks to support and promote replicable research in terms of the clarity of a theoretical argument and/or the testing of hypotheses. Journals that have been most likely to publish SSIP-related research include the top three general journals in the field of political science: the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, and Journal of Politics. A number of more specialized journals frequently publish research of interest to the SSIP community, such as Conflict Management and Peace Science, International Interactions, International Organization, International Studies Quarterly, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and Journal of Peace Research. Together, these journals published a total of 1,024 qualifying articles between 2003 and 2010. These articles cover a wide range of topics, from armed conflict and conflict management to terrorism, international political economy, economic development or growth, monetary policy, foreign aid, sanctions, human rights and repression, international law, international organizations/institutions, and foreign policy attitudes and beliefs. Data users who are interested in conducting their own research must: choose the most appropriate data set(s), become familiar with what the data set includes and how its central concepts are measured, multipurpose data sources, investigate missing data, and assess robustness across multiple data sets.

Abstract:
This two-volume edited collection illuminates the valuable counter-canon of Irish women’s playwriting with forty-two chapters written by leading and emerging Irish theatre scholars and practitioners. Covering three hundred years of Irish theatre history from 1716 to 2016, it is the most comprehensive study of plays written by Irish women to date. These short chapters provide both a valuable introduction and innovative analysis of key playtexts, bringing renewed attention to scripts and writers that continue to be under-represented in theatre criticism and performance. Volume One covers plays by Irish women playwrights written between 1716 to 1992, and seeks to address and redress the historic absence of Irish female playwrights in theatre histories. Highlighting the work of nine women playwrights from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as well as thirteen of the twentieth century’s key writers, the chapters in this volume explore such varied themes as the impact of space and place on identity, women’s strategic use of genre, and theatrical responses to shifts in Irish politics and culture.

Lord Hall, Joan. Sexual Desire and Romantic Love in Shakespeare. Edinburgh University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474488563.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book, which refers to every play in the canon as well as to Shakespeare’s narrative poems and several sonnets, begins by exploring how the signifier ‘will’ denotes sexual desire within Shakespearean contexts. Unlike earlier treatments of sexuality in Shakespeare’s work, Joan Lord Hall’s study deals fully with how his plays and poems treat the issue of rape and sexual coercion—the potential violence of male desire. After exploring the dark side of ‘will’, the book analyses the playwright’s critique of idealistic Petrarchan and Neoplatonic conceptions of love that tend to bypass sexual desire. It also covers Shakespeare’s sceptical approach to ‘fancy’: infatuation driven by visual attraction. Central chapters discuss ways in which Shakespeare’s plays reflect early modern views on the role of sex and love in marriage, and they assess in greater detail than ever before how these texts show heterosexual relationships challenged by homoerotic attraction and same-sex friendship. Finally, the book explores in depth incestuous currents in in the plays—the issue of sexual desire within the family. Its eight chapters provide a comprehensive, fresh understanding of how Shakespeare presents and to some extent reconciles two areas that are often polarized in the early modern period: sexual desire and romantic love.
